family came to our aid and a woman from a nearby house. We are so grateful for their assistance. We cannot thank you both enough. It’s wonderful to know there are good, kind people to help where and when you need them! On New Year’s Eve, my husband and I were at the Seneca Park Zoo and were caught in a snow squall while walking to our car. My husband took a tumble, and being seniors, this is always worrisome. He was unable to get up and had a cut on his head. A young man with his “You have voided the title,” she said with a gleam in her eye. By checking the wrong box on the backside of my son’s title, I inadvertently voided the entire document. My fault, but the consequence is a ten day wait on new documentation and $20. Thank you very much, DMV. My husband and I plant pots of annuals to beautify a little piece of highway along the lake along with his extensive gardens that he keeps expanding every year. We planted the pots around Memorial Day and just as they started flourishing around the end of June or early July all four of them disappeared! This is not the first time some pots have been missing, but all four? What a sad state of affairs! I cannot believe that you could bring these to your home, and no GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

homes and give them “Secret Santa” gift cards from local businesses. After one of Rudolph’s antlers fell off, Santa treated his crew to a warm Tim Horton’s snack. Thanks to Bailey, Brooke, Lily, Sue, Ryan, and Matt for all their help to bring smiles to the faces of the homeowners. Merry Christmas! David Thomas, Riga Recreation Supervisor

On Friday night, December 20th, the Riga Recreation “Rudolf-Mobile” took flight over the roads of Churchville/Riga in search of decorated homes in the area. Santa was accompanied by his elves and others to choose the most tastefully lighted

one would wonder where all those flowers and pots came from. We will no longer be planting pots for the roadside, so you will have to look elsewhere for your flowers. What is going on this year? People are spotlighting deer and shooting them right from the car. I saw a guy the other day by [local] golf club shoot at a deer right out the window of a little silver car across both lanes of the road in broad daylight! My neighbors have had their tree stands stolen from their private posted property. I have trail cam pics of guys sneaking into my hunting spot during bow season. One had a rifle; the other had a crossbow. One of my trail cameras was stolen. I assume it was them but could not make

to your generosity, the two fireplaces in the building are now working with new gas inserts, making for a cozy reading atmosphere in the library. It takes a village, and we are blessed to have one in Avon! Thank you, Red Osier Landmark Restaurant, for having the most beautiful display of Christmas lights! Seeing the Christmas lights was so special to my handicapped son. We enjoyed them so much and look forward to them again in 2020!

out their faces. I have also had people tell me they shot a deer with a deer slug. Then, when they skinned it, it had buckshot or bird shot in the hide. Another friend got a buck. He had to throw the meat out when he skinned it because there was a rotten spot from the neck to the front leg. It was 7pm, and I was washing dishes. I looked across the road and saw a spotlight going into my horse pasture. The light was coming from a car. He backed up to look more. When he saw me come out, he sped off. Had I not come outside and turned the porch light on, he may have shot my horse. On Wed 11/20/19 around sundown, you killed Stevie, a silly brindle mutt we loved for just over a year. We were sure she’d learn

not to jump up and to stop chasing the cats someday. You also shot Henry, a Husky mix who probably initiated the escape from our fenced-in back yard. After dark, Henry limped home, collapsing in the road. Our kids came screaming. We scooped him up, and the battle to save Henry’s life began. His wounds looked like a gunshot, (through and through) later confirmed by the vet. Yes, 6 children got to see what a deer slug does to a dog and will forever imagine a beloved family pet dying out there, never to be found. Henry died despite our valiant effort. FYI, it’s illegal to shoot a dog, except in self-defense. Somebody knows something. Please call the Sheriff with information on our two dogs shot and killed in [local town].

CROSSWORD

“A man must be very ignorant if he answers every question he is asked…”

~ Voltaire We might at first assume that Voltaire was teasing when he suggests that one who answers every question was ignorant. Surely such a person must be extremely intelligent, perhaps the most intelligent person who ever lived! That is precisely Voltaire’s point. No one could possibly be so intelligent as to have the answer to every question. Only those so ignorant that they fail to understand their own limitations would try to answer every question that anyone might ask. Our understanding and compassion is the basis for the advice that we provide to families who must make decisions under stress. We do not take this responsibility lightly.

WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

Salmon Orthodontics

Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest. RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Batavia Ophthalmology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Doctors Disagree on Blood Pressure Target ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 91-year-old male. When I switched primary care physicians, my new doctor shook his head because my previous doctor had never told me about my low GFR readings and being borderline diabetic. In the past I had assumed that if the doctor didn’t mention any low or high blood test results, everything must be OK. I no longer assume: I ask for a copy of the results and question them. The new doctor referred me to a nephrologist. My blood pressure at the time was usually in the 130-140/60-70 range. He told me that for a person of my age, that was too low. He gave me a target of 159/89. Then on my next visit to primary care, I was told that my blood pressure was too high; I was prescribed losartan. I am testing my blood pressure daily, and the past few days it has been in the 170s. So, what is a good target for my blood pressure? Which doctor is correct? -- A.L. ANSWER: There is no absolute right answer to your question. On the one hand, overaggressive treatment of blood pressure in a 91-year-old is unnecessary and may lead to symptoms of lightheadedness, especially upon standing. Other blood pressure drugs may have additional side effects. On the other hand, a 91-year-old has a higher risk for heart disease and stroke, and in someone with a low GFR reading (a measurement of kidney function) and borderline diabetes (which further increases the risk of heart attack and stroke), most experts would aim for a blood pressure goal that is closer to 120-130/80-85, as long as it isn’t causing annoying symptoms. I’m not clear why the doctor wasn’t happy with your usual blood pressure, since a level of 130-140/60s seems very reasonable for a man your age if you aren’t having side effects. If 170 is the usual systolic pressure on your new regimen, I would ask about going back to the old one.

Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have had small breasts. Suddenly, in my mid-70s, my breasts grew, and now at 80 I have outgrown most of my clothes. My doctor said that it is fat, but I have gained only a few pounds. Could this be hormonal? Have you addressed this issue before? -- S.F. ANSWER: I haven’t addressed this before. Breasts change size during a woman’s life for many reasons. Breast tissue is a mixture of fat and glandular tissue. For young women, there’s proportionally more glandular tissue, the amount of which tends to decrease over time. After menopause, the breasts become less glandular; what is lost is replaced by fat, as there is less estrogen. About 20% of women will notice significantly larger breasts after menopause; however, this usually occurs along with overall weight gain. Significant breast enlargement without much weight gain is not common in my experience. Hopefully, your doctor did a thorough examination. However, I think it is very unlikely that your breast size changes represent a tumor. Very rarely, there are estrogen-producing tumors, so if there were other reasons to be concerned, your doctor might check blood levels of hormones, including estrogen. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. FLU-FIGHTING FACTS (NAPS)—The flu is nothing to sneeze at. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza has resulted in between 9.2 million and 35.6 million illnesses annually since 2010. The best way to stay out of such statistics, the CDC says, is for everyone who is eligible and at least 6 months old to get a flu shot as soon as the vaccine becomes available.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

One reason so many are flocking to get the shot is the knowledge of last year’s flu season—which according to the CDC had flu levels that were the highest observed since 2009. Twenty-two percent of those surveyed[2] say that knowledge of last year’s severe flu season makes them more likely to get a flu shot this year. On a similar note, among the 27 percent of parents of children under 18 whose child did not get the flu vaccine last year, 26 percent say they are more likely to get their child vaccinated this year after learning about the notably high flu levels during last year’s flu season. The percentage who get vaccinated at a pharmacy stayed at 22 percent, but the percentage of employed adults who get vaccinated at their workplace fell from 22 percent to 15 percent while those who got vaccinated by a health care professional rose from 44 percent to 48 percent. The survey also found that doctors’ opinions (39 percent), where insurance is accepted (38 percent), and convenience (33 percent) rank among the top three factors in determining where to go for the shot. The flu vaccine is a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, so it’s fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B. Nurse’s Advice “Surprising to many, it can actually take up to two weeks for the flu vaccine to build immunity,” explained Angela Patterson, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic. “Because of this, CVS Pharmacy recommends patients get their flu shot as soon as the vaccine becomes available to ensure patients are the most protected before flu season peaks. Furthermore, influenza strains tend to change each year, so it’s very important to get vaccinated annually to make sure you are protected.”

Now doing Saturday Endoscopies & Colonoscopies at UMMC Residency: Fellowship: Strong Memorial Hospital

Study Shows That may be just as well, since the annual survey, conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CVS Pharmacy [1], found that two-thirds of those surveyed get a flu vaccine every year or plan to get one this year, a 5 percent increase from last year.

“2019” A Quick Year in Review With 2019 in the books, The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant once again had a memorable year. Executive Chef William Burch and his culinary team have another successful year under their belt! Our year started off with serving quality food during the harsh winter months. Fortunately for Chef, a little vacation and celebration in Las Vegas for his birthday was just what the frigid Western New York weather called for. You see, Executive Chef Will gets to take a well, and I stress, well, deserved vacation in January, on us, as our thanks to him for his countless hours and dedication to The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant, year-round. (Although it is hard and difficult work, I do tag along on these journeys.) We experienced the culinary -Steven Foster, Co Owner expertise of Chef Gordon Ramsay and other well-known Las Vegas eateries while enjoying the spectacular city. We are excited about this year’s upcoming trip, traveling to Waikiki to experience the culture and dining that Hawaii has to offer. Early in the year, we decided we were going to build our second food trailer. Sous Chef Michael Mattern’s passion for smoked food also came to a reality with his idea of “The Rib Cage.” After a couple trips to Nashville, we arrived in Stafford hauling a custom made 330-gallon smoker and shortly after, the arrival of our second custom-built food trailer. Our culinary team worked together for months to create a new menu for our 2019 events season. We had a vision of getting away from the “traditional” roast beef sandwich and create sandwiches that speak to who we are as an experienced culinary team and as The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant. We came up with many new sandwiches including our feature, “The Landmark”, a smoked prime rib sandwich topped with homemade BBQ, Homemade Slaw, on a Fresh Grilled Brioche Bun with Kosher Salt and Carraway Seeds, finished with a Bread and Butter Pickle. We ate so many of these sandwiches over the winter months… making sure we knew exactly the right smoking time for the meat, the perfect BBQ recipe… ensuring we had the perfect sandwich. A lot of preparation went into the new menu and it was a huge success. The Landmark Sandwich suddenly became our number one seller at events across Western New York. We traveled throughout Western New York, Central New York, and even out of New York. We featured our food in Washington D.C. and well as making an impromptu stop in Hershey, P.A. with our food trailer. We proudly served our food at The Great New York State Fair, Darien Lake, as well as The Genesee County Fair, winning “The Best Food Award.” Tim and I were honored to be asked to be their Grand Marshalls. I can not say enough about this staff, Chef Will, Sous Chef Michael Mattern, Chef Clifton Williams, and the rest of our dedicated staff, they ran a restaurant while also running two mobile operations, ultimately two more restaurants, just on wheels. Our in-house operations served well over 16,400 portions of prime rib to guests, exemplifying our title of the “Prime Rib Capital of Western New York.” With outside operations attending well over 250 events, the season came to an end in late October. I don’t think we were ever so glad to see our food trucks and smoker put into storage for the season. I think some, mentioned above, might have been making some hand gestures through the window when Tim was pulling out of the parking lot with them. Straight into holiday season we go. In November we had our employee holiday party as our thanks for a job well done year-round. I have said this time and time again, I feel as if we have the best staff in Western New York! We honored some of our standout employees. Chef Will received our 2019 MVP Award, Chef Michael Mattern received our 2019 Teamwork Award, Becky Harding received our Owners Choice Award. Chef Clifton Williams, Erica Scott,

A lot of preparation went into the new menu and it was a huge success.

Executive Chef William Burch with a smoker full of delicious eats! and Kennard Chandler received employee of the year awards. Sandra Coppini and Theresa Whaley were presented with our 4 G’s award which exemplifies customer service. It was soon time to start planning and creating our “Winter Wonderland of Lights.” Tim’s passion for Christmas lights allowed the community and guests alike to enjoy a light display featuring well over 2.5 million lights. The restaurant was festively decorated inside and out, featuring my favorite: the Buffalo Bills Christmas theme at the bar. We held our 3rd annual “Community Days” December 2nd and 9th. We invited the community to celebrate the season with free horse and carriage rides throughout the lights, a free petting zoo, firetrucks from Stafford Volunteer Fire Department with their volunteering for traffic control and visits by Santa and Mrs. Claus. This has been a great year for us here at The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant. We look forward to 2020 with our continued activism and community work while striving to continually bring the best dining experience a restaurant can offer to its guests. We would like to thank all our customers for their continued valued patronage as well as our dedicated staff, friends, and family- for we wish you and your families all a healthy and prosperous 2020! Steven Foster- Co-Owner The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant From Executive Chef, William Burch: 2019 was a year to remember after taking on a second food trailer and a 330 gallon smoker for Chef Mike. I have since made a suggestion box for him and it sort of looks like a paper shredder. My little attempt at humor there. This year was big for my restaurant with hundreds of catering events along with private, and holiday parties. It was fantastic overall. We had the pleasure of hosting different barbeque parties where we spent some overnights at the restaurant preparing our delicious brisket that took hours upon hours to prepare. Between fairs and different weekly events, we were able to show our culinary talents, proving The Red Osier Landmark Restaurant is more than just a beef and seafood house. I could not be prouder of my team for overcoming all the challenges and extras we placed upon them this year. They always got the job done. Thank you to all our customers who allow us to continually grow and the generous support of our local community. Happy New Year to all. Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That lower-thanacceptable performance you’re getting from others in your group might be the result of miscommunication. If so, correct it before serious problems arise later on. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unexpected situation could call for a change of plans. If so, you might feel that this is unfair. But it’s best to make the needed adjustments now. There’ll be time later for rescheduling. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The new year brings opportunities you might want to look into. Some might be more interesting than others. But take time to look at all of them before you make any decisions. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good idea to be careful about expenses until you’ve worked out that pesky financial problem. You might find it advisable to get some solid advice on how to proceed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance looms large over the Leonine aspect. Single Lions looking for love should find Cupid very cooperative. Paired Cats can expect a renewed closeness in their relationships. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Making contact with a former colleague might not be high on your list of priorities. But it could pay off personally as well as professionally. Avoid bringing up any negatives about the past. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A personal relationship could face added stress because of a situation involving someone close to both of you. Be supportive and, above all, try to avoid playing the blame game. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might well find some lingering uncertainties about a decision. If so, take that as a warning that you might not be ready to make that move yet. More study would be in order. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Music is a dominant theme for Sagittarians right now, and it should remind you to make a greater effort to restore some much-needed harmony in that very special relationship. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although family matters might demand much of the Sea Goat’s attention this week, you’ll want to try to make time to handle those all-important workplace situations as well. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recurring unresolved issue might need to be revisited before you can move forward. Consider asking someone familiar with the situation to act as an impartial counselor. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Ignore pressure to make a decision. Keeping your options open is still the wisest course, at least until you’re sure you’ve learned all you need to know about the matter at hand. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re capable of great loyalty to those around you, which is one reason you can count on devotion from friends and family.

Hello, I'm I was adopted almost 8 years ago, when I was 8 weeks old. I am a mixed breed cat. I am a real sassy-pants in all ways. I don't really enjoy being picked up or cuddled. If someone picks me up or I feel like getting into trouble, my pupils increase in size so much there is only a very thin ring of my actual eye color (yellow). Although I do enjoy gentle headbutts. My favorite pastime is napping, and I LOVE cat treats! :) Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Hope Center of LeRoy Making a Difference By Amanda Dudek

S

everal years ago, Reverend Henry Moore followed a vision to bring hope to people across stages of life. So, he and others started serving their community out of a local church. Little could they have imagined running five programs from a Main Street storefront in picturesque LeRoy. “As we continued to serve, God continued to tell us that our vision was too small,” said Rev. Moore. So, he and his pastor realized they needed to separate the outreach from the church and become their own separate faith based 501c3, becoming the Hope Center of LeRoy, allowing them to begin work with members of the community and other local churches. According to Rev. Moore, the center’s director, their intention is “to bring faith and community together.” The Hope Center can now get as big as there are people with a heart for God, who want to start a program that serves real community needs in the name of Christ. They simply present their vision, and they can help them make it happen under the umbrella of the Hope Center. “Hope is a word which speaks of a confident expectation that believes tomorrow will be different, and more specifically, ‘better’ than yesterday,” said Rev. Moore. “Hope is based on the powerful love of a good God who is on your side.” The Center currently offers five programs: Fresh Start Literacy, Memory & Friends, LIFT: Ladies in Faith Together, JOY (Just Older Youth) Fellowship and The Sewing Bee.

The Hope Center of LeRoy’s “Memory & Friends!”

In grades K-6, Fresh Start Literacy gives children the one-on-one reading support they need for greater success in the classroom and in life. “About a year ago, we brought in our first student,” Rev. Moore recalled. “We work with students by appointment and hope to open this program to children of all ages.” Like all the programs offered at The Hope Center of LeRoy, the program is staffed entirely by volunteers. Memory & Friends, a respite care program, has already begun making an impact in its seven short months. Providing a much-needed break for caregivers of those with early to mid-stage memory impairment such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, it’s held from 10am-2pm on the second Wednesday of every month. Caregivers can bring their loved ones in to spend time with a consistent friend. “We work one-on-one with them,” said Rev. Moore. “We play games, do crafts and music. Caregivers are able to go to appointments, visit others and have some quiet time.” The program has been very successful with much positive feedback “from family members who were blessed to bring them as well as from volunteers who had [...] the opportunity to work with these individuals,” shared Rev. Moore. JOY (Just Older Youth) Fellowship for those fifty-five and older is another enriching program. “They get together once or twice a month usually,” explained Rev. Moore. JOY Fellowship’s wide variety of activities, which take place both during the day and in the evening, encourages people and helps them socialize in positive and protected ways. The Center has two more programs: The Sewing Bee, a multigenerational sewing instruction program, and LIFT (Ladies in Faith Together), the Center’s first program begun for single moms.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

LIFT now provides support for moms, both married and single, on the third Saturday of each month from 5:00pm6:30pm. The meeting features a light snack for mothers and their children, activities, supervised childcare, encouragement and spiritual support. The Hope Center also hosts two annual events: Operation Prom Dress and Go Pro Spa Day. Started in 2010 by Rev. Moore’s wife, Valerie, Operation Prom Dress is an annual giveaway meant to ensure that every girl has a beautiful dress for her prom. “We bring in 500Enjoying a Thanksgiving meal at The Hope Center of LeRoy! 700 new and gently used dresses each year,” shared Rev. Moore. He recalled a young woman two years ago who wanted to try on the display dress they kept in the window. They agreed, and it fit perfectly. When they confirmed that she could have the dress and free of charge, the young woman couldn’t believe it. Said Rev. Moore, “The girl was talking on the phone outside and said, ‘I can’t believe they gave me this dress. I’m going to shine.’ It was all about being able to touch a person’s life and change it.” Go Pro (God’s People Restoring Others) Spa Day, started by Lori Steinbrenner, also encourages women. “Each year, we invite a particular group of people,” explained Rev. Moore. “Last year, it was single moms. We give them a full makeover complete with hours of being completely pampered, a meal, and pray for them.” “It is what is inside that really matters,” he observed. “Your inner beauty is the most important part of who you are. This is true male or female, but women in particular hear that if they do not look like this or dress like that, then they are not beautiful, and it crushes them.” The Center’s future endeavors will depend on space and volunteers. “Our goal is to reach people, restore hope and revitalize the lives of those around us. To me, the sky is the limit.” For more information, call The Hope Center of LeRoy at (585) 768-8184, email info@hopecenterleroy.org or visit www.hopecenterleroy.org.

Hand tools and gardening tools usually can be cleaned with rags. If these tools are especially dirty, give them a wash with soap and water. Just be sure to dry the tools thoroughly after washing them. LifeHacker advises wiping down wooden handles on tools with linseed oil to keep them in good repair. Power tools may benefit from compressed air being blown into smaller crevices to dislodge sawdust and other debris. Lubricate any moving parts with a product recommended by the manufacturer. Keeping tools clean and in good repair goes a long way toward safer, more efficient home improvement projects.

GENERAL CONTRACTING ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.

GET BACK TO LOVING YOUR DIGITAL LIFE AFTER A HACK (NAPSI)—Learning you’ve been hacked can be a bummer. Luckily, Allstate believes your online information is just as important as your home or car. To help you learn more about managing your digital footprint, visit www.HiddenWorldOfData.com, which is a hub of educational resources. You can learn more about where your data goes and how to better manage your data privacy and prevent any negative missteps. So whether you’ve been hacked or just want to take the right steps to prevent it from happening, Allstate has your back. 1. Don’t panic! Protecting your personal online data is equally important as your car or home. Having a plan in case you’re hacked can help limit what a thief might do with your information and potentially alleviate damage. 2. Say something. If you fear your banking information may be compromised, call and change your mobile banking passwords. While things are settling, unlink your bank account and card information from places like Venmo and PayPal. If your Social Security number is involved, contact the fraud department at any of the three creditreporting agencies and check credit reports for any suspicious activity.

HOME SERVICES

Lastly, let close contacts know you were hacked so they can avoid clicking on links that might come from you and not fall victim to something similar. 3. Be unique. Reality check: Life would be easier if we only needed to remember one password. But using the same password for multiple accounts can put you at greater risk of having information stolen. Defend your accounts with strong passwords (use upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters—go crazy!) and ensure each password you have is unique to that program or app. A great password manager can take the stress out of remembering a million different passwords!

LAWN & LANDSCAPING

4. Ask yourself how. It’s hard to understand why you were targeted but once you understand how hackers gain control of accounts and get personal information, you’ll get why Allstate wants you to prioritize protecting your digital footprint. Here are some actions that can potentially put your data at risk: • Password reuse • Downloading malware • Using public Wi-Fi • Phishing scams. 5. Protect your phone with more than just a case. Cell phones are crazy convenient—but they also store a lot of highly sensitive information, becoming a prime target for hackers. It’s beneficial to take the time to add a passcode and touch ID to your phone. Keep your phone and apps updated to account for security upgrades from developers, and give only trusted apps access to your location, calendar, photos, etc.

STORM SURVIVAL 101: PREPARE YOURSELF NOW

Drywall and Painting

W ith the country deep in the throes of w inter w eather, and hurricane season fast approaching, experts are reminding homeow ners that having a plan in place can be the difference betw een survival and aw aiting help from others. Coming on the heels of some of the w orst string of natural disasters this nation has ever know n (think w inter storms Nemo, Dion, Gemini or Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, and of course Katrina), these forces of M other Nature highlight the importance of being prepared.

I’s not too soon for homeow ners to begin thinking about all the damage that homes may have sustained from prolonged cold, snow and ice. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w arns that ice dams are one of the most troublesome w inter-related home problems as they can create the perfect environment for termites. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining properly. The melting snow backs up behind this dam and can leak into a home, causing w ater damage to w alls, ceilings, insulation and dryw all and providing enough moisture to attract termites as they begin to emerge at the first signs of spring. Termites are know n as silent destroyers because their constant gnaw ing can go unnoticed until significant structural damage to the home occurs. Even more problematic is that termite property damage, w hich according to NPM A accounts for at least $5 billion each year, is not covered by homeow ners insurance. Depending on the extent of the destruction, homeow ners can be saddled w ith large repair bills. Before the ground w arms, and termite sw arms emerge in search of new structures to feast on, homeow ners should take necessary steps to ensure w inter hasn’t done a number on their homes and left them vulnerable to pest problems in the spring. To prevent ice dams and possible subsequent termite infestations, NPM A offers the follow ing 10 tips: 1. Promptly clear snow off 6. Add insulation to the attic roofs before it freezes and rafters and ceiling. becomes harder to remove. 7. Seal and insulate HVAC ducts. 2. Install snow and ice shields 8. Install chimney flashing to on the roof. prevent leaks. 3. Clean out gutters, and install 9. Seal gaps around electrical gutter guards. cables and vent pipes. 4. Cover an attic or house fan 10. Install eave and soffit vents to during w inter. circulate cold air. 5. Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary.

VILLAGE OF CALEDONIA REPUBLICAN CAUCUS

(585) 813-9758 • (585) 599-3563 www.reebfamilymoving.com

TUESDAY, JAN 21, 2020 AT 7:00 P.M. CALEDONIA TOWN HALL, 3109 MAIN ST., CALEDONIA, NY

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic.

The Republican Caucus for the Village of Caledonia will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. at the Caledonia Town Hall, 3109 Main St., Caledonia, New York.

“On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.”

The purpose of the Caucus will be to nominate Republican candidates for the following offices (or any offices that may become vacant) for the March 18, 2020 Village Election.

He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year.

Village Trustee (2) – 4 year term Village Justice - 4 year term

Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected.

To participate in the Caucus, you must be a registered Republican in the Village of Caledonia.

Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 12, 1932, Ophelia Wyatt Caraway of Arkansas becomes the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Caraway had been appointed earlier to fill the vacancy left by her late husband, Thaddeus Horatio Caraway. * On Jan. 11, 1949, on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C., the cornerstone is laid at the first mosque of note in the United States. The Islamic Center was complete with a 160-foot minaret from which prayers were to be announced.

Both Men And Women Resolve To Tackle Disorganization In 2020; Women Report Feeling More Stressed By Its Effects (NAPS)—If you’re ever determined to finally streamline your office “to do’s” and make a dent in your inbox, or committed to finding a way to keep the kids’ toys out of the way of unwary feet, you’re not alone. A recent national survey of more than 1,200 individuals conducted by the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) for its annual Get Organized & Be Productive campaign revealed that a full 31 percent of respondents are putting “getting organized” on their list of New Year’s resolutions. While the data shows both genders on board with this idea, it also showed that for women, the ramifications may be more significant.

* On Jan. 10, 2008, Tata Motors in India debuts the Nano, billing it as the world's cheapest car. The bubble-shaped mini-vehicle had a base price of $2,000. It had a body made of plastic and sheet metal -- and one windshield wiper.

GO Month evolved as recognition that many view the fresh start implied by a new year as the time to finally tackle the disorganization in their lives—at home and on the job. The survey was designed to probe how feelings of disorganization impact men and women. “People have different levels of tolerance for disorganization in their lives, and what is acceptable for one person may be intolerable for another,” NAPO Executive Director Jennifer Pastore Monroy, CAE observed. “This was particularly true for women.” What The Survey Showed While half of all respondents said that when they feel disorganized, they find it hard to concentrate on current projects, more female respondents reported feeling stressed from feeling out of control of their environment than did men. Specifically: • Thirty-six percent of women said that looking at how organized or disorganized their home is, they feel stressed or completely stressed compared to only 22 percent of men. • More than half of women respondents (53.7 percent) report disorganization leaves them unable to concentrate on the work at hand, vs only 45 percent of men. • 35.5 percent of women vs 22 percent of men wished at some time for someone to come in and organize their home. Monroy’s advice to help streamline one’s environment? “Don’t wait until you feel out of control to tackle the stressors in your life. Having a professional organizer or productivity expert to help look at things with fresh eyes can encourage new day-to-day behaviors to create the needed change, whether you are a man or a woman.” Learn More For further facts and tips, visit www.napo.net. ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. HOW TO PLAN A BIG-GROUP MOUNTAIN VACATION

To add a touch of homelike hospitality to group gatherings, many people are turning to luxury big cabins instead. From cabins with eight-plus bedrooms to renting out multiple cabins on one street for a private block party, it’s a unique option growing in popularity. One new community in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is taking the trend to heart. Gather in the Mountains Mountain vacations are often reserved in people’s minds for ski groups or avid hikers. But plenty of mountain destinations cater to everyone. Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains is a great option for groups because excursions such as white-water rafting and hiking are easily shareable. The area is also home to a theme park, aquarium, minor league baseball games and more, offering plenty of choices for outings. Gatlinburg itself, with restaurants, distilleries, a local craft scene and shopping, gives everyone the chance to head to one place, while spreading out and exploring the area based on their own interests. It’s also the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the country’s most visited national park with more than 11 million visitors annually. Staying active and sharing new experiences can help groups bond and break the ice if it’s a corporate or church retreat where people might still be getting to know one another. Heading to the mountains can offer a nice break from the traditional beach retreat, and rest and relaxation are still an option. From a soak in the hot tub back at your rental cabin to visiting an area day spa, calm and peaceful mountains are a great backdrop for a relaxing getaway. Stay Under One Roof New communities such as Cherokee Orchard are meeting a growing demand for luxury big cabin options in mountain destinations such as the Smokies. The neighborhood recently opened with four cabin rentals ranging in size from eight to 16 bedrooms, along with a pool house. Four more cabins are under construction, varying in size from eight to 20 bedrooms. Once completed, the neighborhood will feature eight log cabins sprawling across more than 1.2 private acres, all within walking distance of downtown Gatlinburg. In the community’s Majestic Pine Retreat, for example, 13 bedrooms include 10 king suites and three rooms with queen-sized bunks, making the cabin fit for 60 guests. A massive kitchen comes fully equipped, while log dining tables can seat everyone for a feast after an action-packed day. A home theater features a large screen, surround sound, stadium seating and plush leather chairs, while two hot tubs join outdoor seating and a grill for entertaining outside. Depending on the size of your group, The Mighty Crabapple Manor offers eight bedrooms, while The Big Oak Lodge provides 16. Each cabin has an impressive great room where the group can relive the day’s memories or break into teams for some board games. Or, everyone can head to the neighborhood’s community pool house for a swim. Whether a single cabin will fit your group or a large event has you renting out the neighborhood, this luxury big cabin trend is a great, unique way to get everyone together.
