According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

Protect Landscapes From Wildlife And More Over
The Winter
Homeowners can take certain actions to winterproof their properties and safeguard landscapes so they recover more readily when spring arrives.
Utilize Barriers and Deterrents
Physical barriers in garden beds and around trees can help prevent damage caused by moles, voles and deer. Line the bottom and sides of garden beds with garden cloth to prevent ground-burrowing animals from getting in from beneath.
Wrapping shrubs in burlap or covering them in temporary netting can deter deer. Erect fencing around new trees to keep deer away from the bark and lower branches.
Make the yard less attractive to deer and burrowers by opting for fat-based suet cakes to feed birds rather than loose seeds and berries in feeders, which herbivores will enjoy. Also, don’t overwater or mulch landscapes too early. The loose soil and warmth of the mulch may entice moles and voles and other rodents to stick around in those areas and feed on plants.
Use a Safer Melting Product
Investigate options in snowmelt products, as traditional rock salt can injure buds and branches and kill lawns. In addition, avoid piling salted snow in one area of the landscape, as it will concentrate the salt in that spot. Spread out snow piles to help minimize the damage to delicate plants.
Secure Saplings and Juvenile Plants
Harsh winds and battering snow can damage young plants. Use stakes and lattices to secure them so they’ll be better able to withstand the weather.
Promptly remove snow from branches to help trees and shrubs; otherwise, the weight of ice and snow can break off branches and cause irreparable damage.
Erect a Snow Barrier
Prior observation tends to educate homeowners about which areas of the landscape are most vulnerable to snow drifts and blustery winds. During the winter, winds often blow in from a northeasterly direction, but each homeowner can make his or her own assessment. Put up a tarp between two stakes to serve as a “snow fence” that protects vulnerable areas of the landscape from blowing snow.
Keep Plants Cozy
Wrap plants in burlap, garden blankets and plant domes to insulate them from cold weather and some animals. Move container plants into a garage or shielded area for the winter.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Do Cats Really Need Potty Training?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read with interest your recent column about cats using shop towels rather than kitty litter to do their business. How did their owner manage to train the cats to use the towels and switch from litter? And why not just let a cat do its business outside? -- Caroline D., Winchester, Virginia
DEAR CAROLINE: Compared with dogs, cats are usually easy to potty train (or litter train) because they have very speci c potty behaviors. Cats instinctively bury their poop to hide their scent from potential predators -- hence the use of cat litter, which also absorbs urine well and masks the scent for a few days.
I’m not sure how the reader did it, but one way to switch a cat from litter box to a pad is to place the new pad and tray next to the old litter box so that a cat can sni around it, check it out and become familiar with it. A er a day or two, remove the litter box and put the pad in its place. Many cats will get the message right away. Others might hunt around for their box; if you notice this, place them gently on the pad to help them make the connection.
I’m not a big fan of letting indoor cats go outside to do their business. ey’ll o en head straight for the nearest ower bed, leaving a surprise that I’m personally not thrilled about. ey also are at risk in the outdoors, from coyotes, turkeys (yes, turkeys in the Northeast), cars and other cats. It’s better to provide a safe spot indoors with a clean litter box.

I HAVE A DREAM...
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which was delivered to a crowd of 250,000 in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963, is one of the most memorable moments of Dr. King’s life. In the 17-minute monologue, Dr. King called for an end to racism. Interestingly, the “dream” component of the speech wasn’t in the original draft. Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson reportedly coached Dr. King to tell the listeners “about the dream.”

REFUGE AND RESOURCES PROVIDED AT ALL BABIES CHERISHED
is nonpro t organization is a bright light in the Batavia community. Director Sue Sherman said, “ ere is no judgment or condemnation when you walk into the center. It doesn’t matter what happened in the past, we are here to give you a brighter future.”
What makes ABC unique? It is Christian based. Christ is the center of their operations. You don’t have to be a believer to get help. You are lovingly welcomed and accepted at this center. Many don’t know the meaning of true love. All Babies Cherished serves from the heart. ey are there during hardships. Regardless of current situations, they want everyone to know that God has a plan for your life to prosper you and give you hope.
Let’s start at the very beginning with ABC - All Babies Cherished. It’s a good place to start. ere is hope, love, and safety for all who enter. is pregnancy resource center provides needs for moms, expectant mothers, fathers, and their children. Help is available to parents and children of all ages.
We are all wonderfully made. ere is a purpose for every life. When di cult and unexpected times happen, do not fear. You are not alone. is divine mission has been operating for over 27 years in Batavia, NY. All their funding comes from donations.
All Babies Cherished continues to add value to the community by encouraging parents to live healthy, happy lives. How do they do that?
Parenting classes are provided. e students enjoy these classes and are hungry to learn. When parents attend these classes, they get the items they need for their children. ese items may include clothing, cribs, high chairs, diapers, baby wipes, and car seats. Over 20,000 items a year are given away free of charge.
All Babies Cherished advocates throughout the community for housing, food stamps, and HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program). Help lling out applications is provided so that parents get needed resources.
Housing assistance is also desperately needed in Batavia for these families. irty- ve percent of the moms and expectant moms that come into the center are homeless, couch hopping with young children in tow, or staying in hotels.
A house was donated to All Babies Cherished. ey are working on getting it ready this year. It will be a temporary shelter for programming, classes, and those needing their GED. is environment will equip these parents to be self-su cient.
Sherman said the moms enjoy learning. Most of them come in feeling unworthy, shameful, guilty, and hopeless. e team at All Babies Cherished edify and empower these families. When they leave, they have what they need, are con dent, and know they are loved. Laughter and fun are included, especially at classes and events. Cooking classes produce tasty dishes. Painting night brings out creativity.
Yearly events include a Basket Ra e in April, a 5K race on the rst Saturday in June, a Banquet in September, and a vendor festival in the fall.
ABC gives in many ways. e ways you can give to All Babies Cherished are with a nancial donation, material items, volunteering, telling a friend, and praying. Open your heart and share the message.
ey are located at 445 Ellicott Street, Batavia, NY 14020. e phone number is 585-344-5660. More information can be found on their website: https://www.allbabiescherished. com/ and on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ AllBabiesCherishedPregnancyCenter

One of the earliest known confirmed hats was worn by a bronze-aged man nicknamed Otzi, whose body was found frozen in a mountain between Austria and Italy, where he had been since around 3250 BCE. Thank you for paying for our drinks and donuts! Thank you to the young lady in the white SUV who paid for our order at DD in Batavia! It's funny because my husband and I were talking about paying for the people behind us and so we did! Thanks again, it’s greatly appreciated!
KUDOS, Ms.Savage
I read in a recent education newsletter that Ms. Valerie Savage, from the Wheatland-Chili Central School District, was named 2022 New York State Art Teacher of the Year! What an honor when you consider that this is considered a small school district when compared to all the school districts in the state. As a former educator and resident of Wheatland, I am so proud and happy for her recognition! Keep up the great works!

Thank you!
I would like to thank all who helped us at Lima Manor during the wind storm on December 23rd. We were without heat and lights for 24 hours. The Lima Fire Dept. came to take anyone who wanted to go to the warming room at the fire station where breakfast and lunch were served. Some of us stayed in our apartments, and the food was brought to us. Thank you to all the helpers.

Move over
Slower traffic “stay right” doesn’t mean only on Thruways. Every day on divided 4 lane roads you have those who drive in the left lane oblivious to others. Every weekday around 3pm I see the same school bus doing 45 in a 55 zone in the left lane. I’m not exaggerating. Roughly 7 miles between towns. Cars and trucks get congested while trying to get past him. Some beep horns and make hand gestures, yet he refuses to move over. Yes, it does create possible road rage and safety issues. Move over!
Sky High Airline Profits
The airlines do not give refunds on unused tickets, involuntarily downgrade seats with no refunds, received $50 billion of taxpayer $ during Covid, and are now posting record quarter profits. How does the airline industry get away with these tactics? No other companies can refuse to give refunds and receive that much in government aid.
Regarding the Dec. 30th “Inconsiderate Deer Hunters” Rant.
Please don’t group all hunters as being inconsiderate. I do tons of hiking, both on local trails and St. Regis Wildness Area up north. I have seen lots of wrappers, trash, dog and horse “waste”, etc... Should I group all hikers as inconsiderate? Also, some of these trails have signs saying no horses, but there is the manure (evidence). What about ATV riders that are not supposed to be on these trails? Are all of them bad? Wildlife have it tougher than us, they eat wherever they can find their next meal, whatever it is. Overall I agree with you that gut piles/carcasses are unsightly and unpleasant, so is unnatural trash, dog and horse manure left by hikers. Let’s agree not to “group” various users all as guilty as all groups have some bad apples (not that apples are bad).

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Immunological Therapy Reasonable for Case of Lymphoma
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with stage 3A follicular lymphoma. It was discovered on a CAT scan when I went to the ER for diverticulitis. I have no symptoms. The doctor did a biopsy to confirm, and I had a PET scan as well. I feel good otherwise. I am only on blood pressure and cholesterol medications. My oncologist is recommending low-dose chemotherapy. I am conflicted. At my age, what should I do? -- L.H.
ANSWER: There are many types of lymphomas (which are a type of cancer of blood cells), but lymphomas are predominantly in the lymph nodes. Follicular lymphoma is an “indolent” type of lymphoma, meaning it is very slow-growing, but unfortunately often uncurable. People with no symptoms from follicular lymphoma and who are stage 1, 2 or 3A tend to have a long time before they have progression of the disease to the point of having symptoms. Depending on other characteristics, that time ranges from three to seven years. Choosing to hold off on treatment is definitely a reasonable option for a person in your situation. However, your oncologist knows much more about your disease than I do, such as the extent of tumor in the abdomen, the molecular markers of the tumor, and additional blood results. When an oncologist suggests treatment, I would listen carefully. One treatment that your oncologist might be considering is immunological therapy such as rituximab. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, rituximab alone is pretty nontoxic and can delay the progression of the disease. A large study suggested improvement in the quality of life with rituximab. Usually, rituximab is given once a week for four doses, but some oncologists repeat the four doses every two months. If I had a patient in your situation, I would say holding off on treatment would be reasonable given your age and lack of symptoms, but a trial of the rituximab (if that is what the oncologist is contemplating) would also be a reasonable choice. If you had serious side effects to the treatment, I would recommend against further doses.

THE BLODDY TRUTH
Among the most common causes of bleeding gums is gingivitis (gum disease), which results from the buildup of plaque at the gumline and leads to inflammation. If not treated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis (advanced gum disease) and additional problems. Other common causes of bleeding gums are brushing too hard, using a toothbrush that’s not soft enough, improper flossing, and taking certain medications such as blood thinners. Ill-fitting dentures, faulty dental restorations, or an undiagnosed health condition or illness may also result in bleeding gums. If you’ve just started flossing, it’s common for your gums to bleed, but it should clear up within a week or two. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also lead to temporary gingivitis and bleeding gums.
Even though plaque is the number
one cause of gum disease, other factors can contribute to its taking hold on your teeth. Hormonal changes, medications, certain illnesses, bad habits, and even a family history of dental disease can all play a part. However, diligence in home care and regular professional visits go a long way to lessen the impact gum disease has on your mouth as well as overall health.
BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL offers a full range of services to meet all your oral health care needs at 6 Batavia City Centre. Call 585.343.4246 for an appointment. We accept most insurances.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles
Goals for 2023
I didn’t rush to create my goals for 2023, but the time has come ...
One year ago I made two goals: to buy weekly food donation cards at the grocery store to give to the food bank and to continue to pick up weekly groceries for three elderly neighbors. I made it three-quarters of the year on both of those.
Food prices just got too high for me to continue to buy a donation card each week. And picking up groceries for the three elderly ladies was no longer necessary once I introduced them to the food bank. Now I have new goals for 2023.
I’m going to continue with “Growing Stronger,” the free 126-page strength-training book for seniors on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website (cdc.gov). I’ve reprinted new, blank pages for the charts, such as Long-Term Personal Goals and How Fit and Strong Are You Now? I’m just about ready to buy a pair of slightly heavier hand weights. If you decide to start the “Growing Stronger” strength program, ask your doctor rst if it’s appropriate for you. And remember: Start slowly, with low weights.
In the tech category, my goal is to successfully set up a personal WiFi hotspot. (A hotspot is letting your phone’s cellular service serve as Wi-Fi.) is desire comes a er a day with no power during a storm. No power meant no computer, but I did have cellphone service. Had I been able to set up a hotspot, I would have been able to access the internet on my tablet. If you decide to try this, be mindful of security.
As a nal goal for the year, I’m going to have a banana each and every day. Whether it’s sliced over cereal or put in a smoothie, I’ll get my ber, magnesium, potassium and vitamins B6 and C ... like it or not.

DID
KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS
Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more.
A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.
Building a strong professional network takes patience and hard work. But the right network can pay dividends for years to come.
NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* If your straw broom isn’t working as well as it did when new, try giving it a spruce-up. Beat any dust out of the ends, then trim off any bent straws. Trim a section from a leg of stretched out pantyhose or tights and wrap it around the bristles, about two inches up from the bottom. This keeps the bristles nice and tight, and it will collect dirt better.
* When you replace old brushes -hairbrushes or toothbrushes -- wrap a length of masking tape around the handle. That way you can use them for cleaning purposes, and they will never be mistakenly used for the wrong purpose.
* “When cooking rice, add a little bit of lemon juice to the water. It does not really flavor it, but it will keep it nice and white, plus it seems to be a bit fluffier when I do this.”
-- R.E. in Mississippi
* “When my child was mostly finished potty training, I put her baby potty in the car with some wet wipes and plastic baggies. Seems like she had emergencies when we were driving, and it wasn’t always convenient to find a business with a bathroom in time. But it was easy to pull into a parking lot and let her take care of business.”
-- E.E. in Maine
* Store extra plastic grocery bags in empty tissue boxes. They are easy to store this way, and you can keep them under the sink or in the car for easy access.
* “Keep your garage floor nice by lining the area where you park with carpet remnants. Road salt and other nasty business that your tires pick up will not corrode the floor. You can shake out the rugs outside.”
-- C.Y. in New York

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE
Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike.
The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn.
Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Yearning for the seemingly impossible is the path to human progress.” -- Bryant H. McGill
9 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Well respected, honored and appreciated for his civil rights activism, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. rightfully earned his place as one of the most influential figures in American and world history. Through his religious teachings and social activism, Dr. King played a key role in the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s.
While Dr. King lived a good portion of his life in the public eye, many facts of his life are not widely known. In honor of his birthday and Black History Month, the following are some interesting and less publicized facts about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
1. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birth name was not “Martin,” but “Michael.” Dr. King’s father traveled to Germany and became inspired by Protestant reformer Martin Luther and thus changed his name while also changing the name of his then 5-year-old-son.
2. Dr. King was a prodigious student. Not only did he skip two grades and start college before formally graduating high school, but Dr. King also earned a bachelor’s degree at age 19, graduating from Morehouse College in 1948 with a degree in sociology.
3. Though not a singer, Dr. King earned a posthumous Grammy Award nonetheless. In 1971, Dr. King was awarded Best Spoken Word album for “Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam.”
4. Although people cannot readily find photographs of Dr. King smoking, he was a regular smoker and even hid the habit from the public and from his children so they wouldn’t take up smoking. It was believed Dr. King was smoking a cigarette when he was fatally shot.
5. While Dr. King is remembered as an enthralling public speaker, he actually scored poorly in public speaking during his first year at seminary. He received a “C” in the class but earned straight “As” by his final year.
6. Dr. King was a “Star Trek” fan. He convinced actress Nichelle Nichols, who played the role of “Uhura” on the show, to continue working with the series. Nichols was considering leaving, but Dr. King told her she was breaking boundaries by playing a character who didn’t conform to black stereotypes.
7. Dr. King narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on September 20, 1958. On that day, Dr. King was in Harlem signing copies of his new book, “Stride Toward Freedom,” when he was approached by a woman who stabbed him with a letter opener. He barely survived.
8. Dr. King’s speech in Memphis in April 1968 may have prophesied his death. Speaking to an audience at Mason Temple Church, King said, “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now . I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.”
9. Dr. King’s birthday is now observed as a national holiday in the United States. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill in 1983. The only other American to earn this honor is George Washington.

This is our 13 year-old St. Bernard, Cooper Unfortunately, Cooper passed away recently in the loving arms of his humans. Cooper loved his doggie siblings, being in the snow, mom’s holiday cut out cookies, and long naps. He would often wait all day at the door or window for his best friend, Rick, to come home from work. We love you & will always miss you, big guy!
