Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity

Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

YOUR SMILE BECOMES YOU It is worth mentioning that many people do not have perfect ”Hollywood” smiles, but they do have smiles with features that make them immediately recognizable and lovable. For example, one well-known French dentist employs a technique known as “micro-rotations” to create smiles of ”harmonious asymmetry.” In order to give their face a more youthful appearance, adult patients may decide to have their lateral incisors rotated slightly instead of having their four front teeth aligned in a perfect row. If you want to see an example of harmonious asymmetry, look at Keira Knightley’s natural smile. Once you see her smile, you will likely agree that she would not be herself without this endearing “imperfection.”

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
No Screening Tests for Bile Duct Cancer ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: A family friend has just been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and is 75 years old. The tumor is said to be the size of a quarter, and it was discovered after she complained of heartburn symptoms. Are there screening tests that could have detected the condition before the heartburn symptoms? Are there things that she could have done to avoid the cancer? My family members are frightened and want to avoid her condition. -- Anon. ANSWER: Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is a rare cancer that is, unfortunately, associated with a high mortality rate. There are no symptoms in most people until it is advanced. Since the cancer is in the bile ducts, the most common symptoms are caused by obstruction of the bile ducts: jaundice (yellow in skin/eyes), generalized itching, dark urine and lightcolored stools. Abdominal pain, fever and weight loss are other symptoms. Cholangiocarcinoma is not a disease that’s amenable for screening; it is rare in North America (it is more common in East Asia, where there are screening programs). Further, the available screening tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, are not very sensitive, meaning the tests will miss cases. And they are not very specific -- a positive result on the screening test does not necessarily mean cancer. For these reasons, screening is not currently recommended for people at average risk, although it may be considered in people at high risk, such as people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease that puts people at high risk for cholangiocarcinoma. Other risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma are mostly beyond a person’s control: other liver diseases, parasites and genetic conditions. There is some evidence that obesity and diabetes increase the risk of this cancer; however, it does no good for you or your friend to look backward. Never blame the victim. She should concentrate on getting treated. I don’t have enough information to comment on her prognosis, but the fact that it was diagnosed early -- apparently before obstruction of the bile ducts -- and with a tumor only the size of a quarter, are favorable. Treatment may include surgery and chemotherapy (before or after surgery).
Understanding food labels is a great first step toward eating healthy.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a friend who is a longtime user of diet soda pop. A year ago, she was diagnosed with colon cancer and spots on her liver. She is taking chemo again now. She continues to consume diet soda, which concerns me because I have heard of possible adverse effects of artificial sweeteners. How would you advise her? I hesitate to say anything, since she might be getting more unsolicited advice than she wants already. -- M.K. ANSWER: I think that artificial sweeteners are unlikely to have had any role in causing her cancer in the first place, nor in her treatment or risk of recurrence. It’s more important for her to stay hydrated during chemotherapy, and she should have what is easiest for her -- and if that’s diet soda, that’s fine. Even if water is the best choice, I completely agree with your thoughtfulness: Now is not the time to give unsolicited health advice. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOMETOWN 1.
“A man can stand a lot as long as he can stand himself.....”
~ Axel Munthe Into every life some rain must fall. We all suffer adversities of various kinds. We can meet these misfortunes with courage and fortitude or we can grovel in self-pity and try to find an easy way out, even if it means dodging our responsibilities. Mere adversity never killed anyone. We live through it and usually, when the problem is finally resolved, it turns out to have been less awful than we imagined. We can stand a great deal if we are proud of the way we do it. Families of all faiths are assured of perfectly appropriate services when they place their trust in us. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds. When the need arises, call us first.

General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.
BUDGET-FRIENDLY LOCAL ACTIVITIES: Bowling: Bowling is a fun, affordable activity that people of all skill levels can enjoy. If you have enough friends interested in making a night of bowling, reserve a lane or lanes in advance so you won’t have to wait. And if everyone has a good time, look into creating a team and joining a league. Many bowling alleys host league nights that can also serve as great opportunities to meet people. Many thanks to Northside Salvage Co. in East Rochester! You delivered as promised, for which I am much grateful. Sorry this “shout out” recognizing your reliable business took so long to submit, but here it finally is. We came to you looking for a real spare tire, not a ‘donut’. For a Christmas present last year, we received a gift card from a popular restaurant/bar in [local town]. Shortly thereafter, they closed for renovations. We anxiously awaited their reopening. Finally, we were able to stop for lunch. The new owner refused to accept our gift card. We were not aware it was under new management. We do know Sherry would have done anything to retain us as a customer. Sadly, we will not darken the doorway of this establishment again. Hope the new owner brings all new clientele; he will need them if he is to remain in business. On November 7th, I was lucky enough to shoot a nice 8-point buck. I was going to mount the antlers

There was a mix up with the inventory, and it was at your Buffalo lot, though you promised home delivery nicely wrapped in plastic the next day. Being short on time and purchasing other used car parts from the Northside Salvage Co. before, I had no doubt about paying in advance and trusting your company. People waste so much money on new parts when they can support a local business that has a great reputation and just about every screw, bolt, mirror, hubcap, and tire they need. Northside Salvage, thank you very
much, cheers to a safe and healthy year to all of you and your families. Your hard work is gratefully appreciated. Toni – East Rochester
on a plaque because they were quite large. On November 8th, the butcher called and said my deer was cut up. I picked it up and on the way home stopped at [local] grocery store to get a few things. The meat and head were in the back of my truck. When I came out of the store the head was gone! Why would you steal it? When you mount it, tell your friends that’s the one you stole from the grocery store parking lot. The tag was on the antlers. If you would like to return it, I’d appreciate it, but I doubt you will.
The bride spends all the holidays with her family and forgets his! This is very selfish and crosses the line to just plain mean when your husbands have only one surviving parent. What do you suppose that parent does for the day? Seriously, are the people who raised the man you love so awful? I won’t even go into how sad it is when grandchildren are involved. Take a minute to take stock of your holidays. Are you respectful and inclusive of your husband’s families, or are you guilty of this behavior? Once you’re finished with all the excuses as to why you don’t go there, take time to put on your big girl pants and go act like a considerate adult. You can set a good example for the kids. At least give your husband time to take the kids for a visit.
Attention Daughter-inLaw! Your husbands have families, too! I am seeing more and more one-sided holiday arrangements.

Enough is Enough about wheelchair rights! Please get off it. With all the horrific things happening in the world, move on about being an adult in a wheelchair and being treated like one. Be happy if someone is considerate and takes the time to try to help or assist someone they may think needs assistance. This could be anyone, and not necessarily someone in a wheelchair. If you don’t want the help, then tell them so. Simple as that. Stop this obsessing about whether it is an assault or someone feeling “pity” for you. I thank God that my mother was a dignified and gracious woman (in a motorized wheelchair) who had enough common sense to know how to deal with someone trying to assist her. Get a life!

Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee a Family Resource Hub By Amanda Dudek
H
ow do you connect with local resources, groups and events when finding each one is like a new page in Where’s Waldo?
This is the challenge Michelle Waters faced as a 19-year-old, young mother, looking for support and community connection for her family. She knew it was out there, but was there a resource for finding these things in Genesee and Orleans Counties which stretch between Rochester and Buffalo? Until last year, the answer was a resounding, “No.” At that time, Waters had to get through by figuring most of it out on her own, but the experience launched her search. Some years later, she found Macaroni Kid, an online community with “two very specific goals: enrich communities and empower moms,” according the Macaroni Kid website. “I just started searching for something like it,” said Waters. “I saw the void and wanted to fill it. Macaroni Kid stuck out to me as being the most community-oriented. They had the most for me to connect with as a publisher and are a nationally recognized brand which makes it easier to connect.” Macaroni Kid is a national brand with over 500 “editions” nationwide. Each edition has its own publisher, usually a local parent, who runs and develops it. “It is a hyper local resource for parents,” explained Waters. “We have an event calendar with everything that is going on in the area such as library events, events at businesses, organizations, resource information and festivals. It is free for the community to use, and we send out a weekly e-newsletter with events, highlights, recipes and more to over 1,000 subscribers.”
a full Christmas to twelve families in need. “It was amazing,” she said. “My husband and I had a cargo van loaded full of gifts. We spent nearly six hours delivering Christmas gifts all over Genesee and Orleans Counties. There were so many children, and some people had even given presents for the moms, too.” Waters is thankful to have been a part of it all. “That is what lights me up for Christmas, for sure,” she shared. “I just feel really grateful, and I am so happy that these are the kind of At our Halloween party at Dance Reflections people who are reading my with the costume swap! writing. A lot of what these families asked for were necessities, too,” she clarified. “How could we not help?” A successful holiday season behind them, Macaroni Kid OrleansGenesee looks forward to a bright future in the new year. “I am definitely thinking we will have something for Easter,” said Waters. “We would like to have a Valentine’s Day exchange, but that may start next year.” Waters also plans to hold a Halloween costume swap event again this fall. “We exchanged gently pre-loved costumes,” she said. “That was really fun.” Meanwhile, Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee subscriber and follower numbers continue to climb, and Waters knows why. “It is amazing to have all the information in one spot...for you, for your town, from someone who lives in and is from your area,” she explained. “We also do giveaways for the subscribers and highlight local businesses as much as possible because keeping your money where you live impacts all of us.”
Michelle Waters with her son!
For Waters, it is not about the numbers; however, it is about the community. “I run my chapter trying to better the community as much as I can,” she said. “I want parents, including moms, dads and grandparents to know they are welcome and that they can find information here. It gives me a platform to run things like Project Christmas Magic.”
Throughout 2020, Michelle will continue to fill her edition with local, useful information for families. “We are a tribe of like-minded people,” she said. “We are in this together and all in the same boat. If I can save you just a little time in your day, I will feel like I did something worthwhile.” To learn more, visit www.orleansny.macaronikid.com or email Michelle Waters at michellewaters@macaronikid.com.
Project Christmas Magic is a holiday giving project which Waters started years before launching Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee. This past Christmas, she launched the project again to great success. “It had lost traction, but then I saw people asking for resources,” recalled Waters. “I wanted to do anything I could to help.”
Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:
Waters created two posts on Macaroni Kid Orleans-Genesee. “In one post, I asked who would be willing to sponsor a family or buy gifts,” she said. Waters didn’t specify a minimum or a maximum amount. “I left it up to the people who wanted to sponsor,” she explained. “I didn’t want to take it over too much, and I didn’t want anyone to feel like whatever they could do wasn’t enough. I just let it flow.”

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Good G ood H Health ealth R Reset eset (NAPS)—A good health reset can happen any time of the year. It simply takes a commitment to making small, sustainable changes that add up to impactful, healthy habits. Dr. Samara Sterling with The Peanut Institute says it’s best to begin by concentrating on the good habits you already follow. “Set yourself up for success by building on the healthy things you like to do,” says Sterling. “For example, if you typically eat one serving of fruit a day, figure out a way to increase that to two servings.” Over time, as you amp up your healthy habits, the detrimental ones tend to fade away more easily. As part of a good health reset, Dr. Sterling recommends incorporating more protein, especially plant-based proteins, into a daily diet. “Proteins and healthy fats make you feel fuller for longer and can help eliminate the urge to snack and consume empty calories,” explains Sterling. Peanuts are an example of a powerful plant protein. Just one serving of peanuts delivers seven grams of protein, 19 vitamins and minerals and heart-healthy fats. “Peanuts are categorized as a superfood because they’re nutrientdense and deliver superior health benefits in a very small serving,” says Dr. Sterling. “If you combine superfoods, like kale and peanuts or quinoa and peanuts, you’re really maximizing your nutritional intake.” There’s more good news because peanut butter also packs protein. “Research has shown that the consumption of small amounts of peanuts or peanut butter has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes,” says Sterling. “It’s easy to incorporate peanuts and peanut butter into breakfast, lunch or dinner.”
On Jan. 20, 1980, bleachers at a bullring in Sincelejo, Colombia, collapse, resulting in the deaths of 222 people. The deadliest tragedy at a sporting event in Colombia's history was the result of overcrowding and poor construction. On Jan. 22, 2003, the U.S. Census Bureau releases detailed statistics on race and ethnicity showing that the Hispanic population was the country's largest minority group. Some 29% of immigrants in the U.S. had come from Mexico alone. On Jan. 21, 1977, U.S. President Jimmy Carter grants an unconditional pardon to hundreds of thousands of men who evaded the draft during the Vietnam War. Some 100,000 young Americans went abroad in the late 1960s and early ‘70s to avoid military service.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

DID YOU KNOW?
FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus.
Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

* Repurpose coffee filters as holders for your sandwiches. They’re easy to hold and help keep your favorite toppings contained. * Up-cycle an empty six-pack container into a convenient cookout caddy to hold napkins, condiments and utensils. Not only is it quick to grab and place on the table, but it helps keep napkins from blowing away in a breeze. * For kabobs, keep wooden skewers from charring by soaking them in water before threading on ingredients. * Prepare toppings the night before and arrange them in a disposable foil pan for a quick and easy DIY topping bar.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. A BELOVED DOG, A STOLEN CAR AND... A HAPPY ENDING (NAPSI)—It started out as a normal day for Mary Harrison—until she briefly left her car running outside of her home with her shih tzu Molly in the backseat and went inside for just a second. When she came back outside, however, her car—and Molly—were gone. She called Verizon to see if her phone could help track her car, and a Verizon customer service representative saved the day. “When Mary called in, I was taken aback with her car and dog being stolen,” said the tech expert who answered the call. “I really felt for her. I work at home and my two dogs are at my feet all day.” They pulled up Harrison’s account and saw that she had a Hum by Verizon device in her car. Hum is a vehicle diagnostic system from Verizon Connect. It takes the guesswork out of driving with connected car technology, so you can stay in touch with emergency services and your loved ones on the road. For instance, if Hum detects a crash, it can notify emergency services and send help your way. With Hum’s vehicle diagnostics feature you can check your car’s health from your phone and detect issues before you go. You can also schedule maintenance reminders and Hum will text or e-mail you when it’s time for a tune-up or an oil change. And if your car is stolen, as in Mary’s case, Hum can send your car’s location to local law enforcement. “I knew with Hum there was a lot we could do to help her. I pulled up the step-by-step troubleshooting guide to reset her password and bring up the vehicle’s location on her phone. As soon as she saw the car on her phone, she started to cry.”

The car was not far from Harrison’s home. She could have walked there, but the customer service representative advised her to stay safe, call the police, and recover the car together. When Harrison got to the car, her dog was still there, safe inside. “It made me feel great to be able to help her,” the customer service representative said. “I know that if it were my dog in the car, that would be my biggest concern, too. I wouldn’t even care about my car or my stuff, just getting my dog back safely. I was so impressed by how quickly and accurately Hum found her car. It’s awesome that we have this great technology available.” Learn More: For further facts about how helpful Hum can be, go to www. Hum.com. Page 26

ICE DAM S PUT HOM ES AT RISK FOR TERM ITES I’s not too soon for homeow ners to begin thinking about all the damage that homes may have sustained from prolonged cold, snow and ice. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w arns that ice dams are one of the most troublesome w inter-related home problems as they can create the perfect environment for termites. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining properly. The melting snow backs up behind this dam and can leak into a home, causing w ater damage to w alls, ceilings, insulation and dryw all and providing enough moisture to attract termites as they begin to emerge at the first signs of spring. Termites are know n as silent destroyers because their constant gnaw ing can go unnoticed until significant structural damage to the home occurs. Even more problematic is that termite property damage, w hich according to NPM A accounts for at least $5 billion each year, is not covered by homeow ners insurance. Depending on the extent of the destruction, homeow ners can be saddled w ith large repair bills. Before the ground w arms, and termite sw arms emerge in search of new structures to feast on, homeow ners should take necessary steps to ensure w inter hasn’t done a number on their homes and left them vulnerable to pest problems in the spring. To prevent ice dams and possible subsequent termite infestations, NPM A offers the follow ing 10 tips: 1. Promptly clear snow off 6. Add insulation to the attic roofs before it freezes and rafters and ceiling. becomes harder to remove. 7. Seal and insulate HVAC ducts. 2. Install snow and ice shields 8. Install chimney flashing to on the roof. prevent leaks. 3. Clean out gutters, and install 9. Seal gaps around electrical gutter guards. cables and vent pipes. 4. Cover an attic or house fan 10. Install eave and soffit vents to during w inter. circulate cold air. 5. Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles.
M any people mistakenly believe pests should only be dealt w ith once inside a home. How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Rodents, the most common w inter pests, invade nearly 21 million U.S. homes each w inter. Despite all the proper precautions, if rodents still find their w ay inside, they often leave clues of their presence. Droppings, one of the most visible signs, are most frequently found in kitc hen cabinets, along w alls, on top of w all studs or beams, near nests and in boxes, bags, old furniture and other objects. Gnaw marks and trac ks are other visible evidence of a rodent problem. Rodents w ill also sometimes reveal themselves through scurrying sounds.
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DRIVING VACATION: Be firm with departure times. Make a plan to leave at a particular hour and stick to it. This will help to keep the trip on schedule.
Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) W hen a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A w orking smoke ala rm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than tw enty percent of American homes are w ithout them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. M ake a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your fam ily precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. M ake sure yo u have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. The m any benef it s of aut om ot ive roof rack s Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Mixed signals could create problems. Make sure your views are presented clearly, and insist others do the same. Don’t let an unanswered question go by without a full explanation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial pressures ease, allowing for more budget flexibility. But as the money-wise Bovine will appreciate, thrift still beats out splurging. Expect news from someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting things done is what you do so well. But be careful not to overtax your energy reserves. Take time out to relax or to do something different to help keep them at optimum levels. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) This is a good time to satisfy the Moon Child’s growing sense of wanderlust. Choose a really special place to go to, with a very special person to share it all with you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You love being in the spotlight. But be careful it doesn’t blind you to the truth behind a seemingly wonderful opportunity. Look closer and you might be sadly surprised at what you find. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Isn’t it time to take a break from your hectic schedule? Sure it is. And the sooner you do, the sooner you can return fresh and more than ready to take on all those new projects. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A recent family incident can help bring everyone closer, and there’s no one who’s better at making that happen than you. Accept (indeed, insist on!) help from others to get things off and running. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Long-held habits are often difficult to break. But the change from how you always did things to how you can do them now can be liberating. So, be flexible and give it a try. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone you met in your professional world last year and thought you would never hear from again could make a sudden reappearance in your life, along with an interesting offer. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Once again, you delight everyone by coming up with a solution for a problem that actually works. On another note, it’s not too early to get started on those travel plans. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Before you go ahead with finalizing your plans for your new project, check them over to see if you can make some improvements or if you can find ways to cut costs. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The Fabulous Fish might have been out of the social swim for too long, and it’s time you plunge back in. Reinforce your old friendships and be open to starting new ones. BORN THIS WEEK: Your creative talents help bring beauty to the world and the people in it. On their behalf, thank you.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS (NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents.
ADMINISTERED PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURAL OATH
2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags.

5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. www.monroe2boces.org WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.
“The best thing about coming to work at Horizon Health Services is knowing that I am given the opportunity to make a difference within the community, and knowing that I am supported by my amazing team!”

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY A long workday can be both mentally and physically draining. As a result, office workers and professionals whose jobs are more physically demanding than office work may find themselves less alert at the end of the workday than at the beginning. A loss of alertness as the workday draws to a close might be unavoidable. But professionals whose sense of alertness begins to dwindle in the thick of the workday might need to take steps to improve their alertness to protect themselves from injury and to ensure the quality of their work does not suffer.
