STRANGE BUT TRUE

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* Toothpaste works well as a silver polish. Wet your silver, plop a little non-gel toothpaste on it and rub gently to clean. Rinse well and let it shine.

* A great hint from Mary R. of Duluth, Georgia: If the kids are drawing with felt markers and their hands get covered with ink, don’t worry. Just spray their hands down with hairspray, then wipe off the ink with a paper towel. Don’t forget to wash their hands afterward!

* Dip your toothbrush in baking soda before you add toothpaste when brushing your teeth. You get used to the taste, but the extra scrub really gets your teeth clean, and it’s very inexpensive to use. -- R.E. in Arizona

* Have clumped-up sugar in the canister? No worries. To keep sugar from hardening, add a slice of bread to the container from time to time, and leave it there a day before removing.

* Use this quick fix for oily hair. Rub a small amount of cornstarch into the oily areas of your hair. The cornstarch will soak up the dirt and oil; you just brush it out.

* A reader from Michigan wonders: How can I keep from having static head, especially when using a hat? The answer: You probably already have a tube of lip balm in your pocket or purse. Rub some on your palms, then run your palms over your hair.

entistry recommends that a child should visit the dentist by age one or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth.

Get a Grip

One of the most important aspects of winterization is ensuring you have a safe grip on the road. Like the soles of shoes that prevent us from slipping, quality tires help keep your vehicle securely on the road, especially in slippery rain or snowy conditions. Checking tire tread and pressure is important to ensure you have optimal traction. If you live in a particularly snow-prone or rural area, you might also consider buying snow tires and/or chains.

DID YOU KNOW?

Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer to affect the endocrine system. While many cancers have decreased in prevalence, ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc. indicates incidence rates for thyroid cancer have increased in recent years. The American Cancer Society expects thyroid cancer deaths to increase to 2,200 in 2021 out of an estimated 44,280 people affected by thyroid cancer. Unlike most other adult cancers, thyroid cancer is commonly diagnosed at a younger age. Women are three times more likely to develop thyroid cancer than men.

Thyroid cancer is largely treatable, most notably with the removal of a portion of the gland or the entire thyroid gland depending on cancer stage. People who have had their thyroids removed (thyroidectomy) will need to take daily thyroid hormone pills.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE

Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

Chrysanthemums

Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during which the heart can beat too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs when rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, which consists of the heart’s two upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, when a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. While that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s two lower chambers, and this prevents the lower and upper chambers from working together effectively. Though AF does not always produce noticeable symptoms, some people with AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially when the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

Did You Know?

According to the American Diabetes Association, as men and women age their risk for type 2 diabetes increases. Diabetes develops when the amount of sugar in a person’s blood is too high. When a person has type 2 diabetes, his or her body does not respond to insulin, a hormone that regulates the amount of glucose, a type of sugar, in the blood.

HOW TO HEAL FROM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT AROSE DURING THE PANDEMIC

Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establishing old routines also can return a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.

SENIOR NEWS

... It’s Still Here

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of Covid cases has steadily risen since December. Earlier in the fall, Covid took a short break while the u and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) made it to center stage. ose illnesses are now waning a bit, and here comes Covid again.

It doesn’t help that we have a new variant -- an o shoot of Omicron, the XBB.1.5 -- taking o around the country. By Christmas nearly half the cases of Covid were that new variant, so it’s growing.

Seniors, as usual, are being hit hard with those in the age 70+ range being the largest group a ected, followed by ages 60-69.

If you’re hesitant to go back to being extremely careful, we’re experiencing what some doctors are calling the Senior Wave. It means the numbers on a graph show that the largest group a ected with hospitalizations are seniors.

Which means it’s still not time to let down our guard. If anything, it means renewing our e orts to stay safe. Frequent handwashing, wearing a mask in the store, even if you’re the only one who is, staying out of large groups ... we know how to do this.

And like it or not, we should. e growing number of seniors being hospitalized or dying due to Covid should shake up all of us.

Another, and possibly even more accurate, statistic for the spread of Covid is the wastewater. is is where municipalities test the sewage for Covid. People can hide their exposure and illness by using the at-home tests we all received in the mail, thereby skewing the “o cial” numbers, but the sewage in an area is sure to be more accurate.

To see the wastewater data by county, go online to CDC.gov and search for “National Wastewater Surveillance System” (NWSS).

Did You Know? Baby Boomers make up the largest generation of Americans born in United States history. Boomers include anyone born between the years 1946 and 1964, as the number of births began to rise as World War II veterans returned home from battle. The greatest number of Baby Boomers were born in 1957, when numbers peaked at 4,300,00. That equates to roughly 8 children born per minute throughout the year. By 2019, the last of the Baby Boomers, or those born in 1964, will be eligible for many senior benefits offered to people age 55 and up. Ten years later, most will be eligible for retirement.

PAW’S CORNER

Cats Can Hide Illness Symptoms, So Be Aware

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat Sisko became very una ectionate a few days ago. He hid under the bed or crouched in the corner of the living room and refused to cuddle. en I noticed when he sat in the litter box that he meowed as if he was in distress. I called the veterinarian, and they had me bring him right in. Turns out that Sisko had a urinary tract infection! He’s doing ne now, but I wanted to tell my story so that other readers will know that a sudden behavior change in their cat could be a medical problem. -- Kurt W., Parsippany, New Jersey

DEAR KURT: ank you for sharing! You did absolutely the right thing: You noticed a sudden change in your cat’s behavior, kept a closer eye on his activities and litter habits, and contacted the vet’s o ce to share your observations and get advice.

Cats are very secretive about their health. It’s an instinctive behavior that helped their ancestors hide from predators. So it is common for owners not to notice when their cat is experiencing pain, such as a sore tooth or an illness like a urinary tract infection.

While the occasional hairball episode isn’t a cause for concern, there are some symptoms that should prompt a call to the vet for an appointment.

-- Your cat acts withdrawn, sits hunched over, refuses to play or be petted.

-- Eating or drinking habits change.

-- Litter box behavior changes: meowing, missing the box or noticeable diarrhea.

-- Grooming problems develop, or they have clumpy fur or irritated skin.

-- Physical symptoms: eye or ear discharge, strange breathing, unusual vomiting, lethargy or drooling.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

THE BEST OF GENEROSITY, LOVE, AND CARE AT AURORA HOUSE

There is a time and season for everything. In 2010, it was time for Aurora House to be born. e Westside needed this comfort care home. eir mission began with raising money and gathering a team of volunteers. Ogden Presbyterian Church donated the land at 2495 South Union Street, and the house was built with donated funds and services.

Aurora House o ers high-quality comfort care with a personal touch. Residents and their visitors are surrounded by warmth, acceptance, and understanding in this two-bed homelike setting. It’s about you and your loved one being together and nding respite.

Since residents cannot go to their homes, sta do their best to make Aurora House feel like home. Aurora House provides the physical and emotional space for each resident to complete their earthly assignment and for families to carry on their loved one’s legacy. ere are no visitor restrictions. Family and friends are even welcome to stay overnight in the house if they want to.

All comfort care homes maintain the motto, “Neighbors taking care of neighbors.” e sta asks themselves, “How would I care for my loved one to make them most comfortable?” Compassion over ows in many ways, whether it’s sitting in silence or lending a listening ear. Needs are heard and taken care of to the best of their ability.

Not all patients are elderly; one was even 34 years old. Unfortunately, accepted end-of-life patients are getting younger.

Although they focus on end-of-life care, life is celebrated at Aurora House. Each resident matters. It’s important to learn about their life at every stage as well as who they are now. ere is wisdom in hearing their stories. Fun and laughter are encouraged within the house.

ere is much more to a person beyond their physical and medical needs. at is why volunteers at Aurora House

ll wishes and residents’ and family requests. A visit from a precious pet or a call from out-of-town relatives can be arranged.

Volunteers are the heart of this home. Cooking, cleaning, gardening, event planning, and fundraising are all part of the giving and caring. Donations, memorials, grants, and fundraisers support the home’s operation. Care and related services are free of charge to the patient and their family thanks to the generosity of the community, friends, and neighbors.

Before a loved one climbs the stairway to heaven, this wonderful home provides the opportunity to share special moments that will live on forever.

Everyone processes grief di erently. Having conversations and o ering resources helps people prepare and understand what they will face. Aurora House sta educates those facing loss and grief onsite and in the community. Hard conversations about end-of-life wishes are essential.

Aurora House sta meets people where they are in their stage of care, and they help people understand what to expect. Support continues for families a er the loved one passes. Sta mail cards to families to let them know they remember them on special days.

Aurora House survives solely on donations and volunteers. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Anyone interested in donating personal, household, or other items Aurora House needs should check the home’s website at aurorahousewmc.com. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Chalazions Continue to Develop in Both Eyelids

DEAR DR. ROACH: Are oral antibiotics ever prescribed to treat chalazions, in addition to eye drops and ointment? I have had two this year for seemingly no reason. They were treated with tobramycin eye drops, ointment and warm compresses. The first one didn’t resolve with those meds and was excised surgically. That eyelid then became infected without a chalazion and was treated with a second round of antibiotic drops. It remains a bit puffy and pinkish in color, which I chalked up to the new normal appearance.

Now, a chalazion has developed in the other eyelid. I don’t wear eye makeup and use an eyelid cleanser recommended by my ophthalmologist. I am an otherwise healthy 76-year-old woman. Could there be a systemic bacterial or viral infection causing chalazions to keep developing? -- M.W.

ANSWER: The terms for different types of eyelid lesions can be a bit confusing. Most people are familiar with a stye, which is a localized inflammation of the upper or lower eyelid, most commonly caused by an infection of one of the glands of the external eye, usually by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. A stye is also called a hordeolum. An external hordeolum is in the eyelash follicle or the lid margin, whereas an internal hordeolum is inflammation in the meibomian glands, the ones that secrete mucous to help keep the eyes lubricated.

Makeup can block these glands and predispose someone to hordeola. Hordeola are treated with warm compresses and sometimes by an eye specialist, with a combination of antibiotic drops and topical steroids. Drainage by an ophthalmologist is necessary if it doesn’t get better within one to two weeks. If the infection gets into the skin around the eye, it may need oral antibiotics.

A chalazion is not an infection. It’s a usually painless rubbery mass in the eyelid. A chalazion can be a complication of a hordeolum, since the glands are blocked by inflammation, leading to thickened secretions from the gland. Since it’s not an infection, neither oral nor topical eye antibiotics are useful. These also usually get better with warm compresses over weeks to months. People with recurrent chalazia should be considered for biopsy, since they can turn out to be tumors in rare circumstances.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

CAUSES OF BAD BREATH

Bad breath, also called halitosis, is caused by the bacteria that grow in our mouths on bits of food that get stuck between teeth. The bacteria release sulfur compounds that cause your breath to smell bad. Contrary to common belief, you can’t counteract bad breath by using mouthwash: you must brush for two minutes twice a day and floss daily. In addition to regular brushing, daily flossing is the best way to avoid bad breath because it removes food particles from in between teeth. Certain pungent foods such as onions and garlic also cause bad breath because their oils are carried into the lungs and then recycled into your mouth through the respiratory system.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our purpose in presenting this column is to exhibit the virtues of professional care as well as diligent home care in achieving and maintaining a

healthy, vibrant smile. Through a combination of proven techniques and innovative technology, plus communication and compassionate concern, we attempt to move our patients toward an optimum state of oral health. When was your last dental checkup? Now is a good time to schedule an appointment for comprehensive dental care, including help with bad breath, helpful dietary information, cleanings, restorations, cosmetic work, or gum disease treatment. Call us at 6 Batavia City Centre, 585.343.4246.

P.S. You cannot determine whether you have bad breath by breathing into your cupped hands. Talking, rather than breathing, brings odors from the back of your mouth to the front.

HEALTH CARE SCREENINGS FOR MEN

BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 39

Diabetes: Risk factors and warning signs will dictate if men between the ages of 18 and 39 require diabetes screening. For example, the U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that a BMI over 25 is considered overweight, which is a risk factor for diabetes. Men who fall into this category should be screened for diabetes starting at age 35 (the USNLM urges Asian American men to be screened if their BMI exceeds 23). Providers also may test men’s blood sugar levels if their blood pressure is 130/80 or higher and/or if they have a first degree relative with diabetes or a history of heart disease.

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED

• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.

• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go.

• Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.

• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized.

• Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates.

• Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.

• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion.

• Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

Older properties tend to have a sense of charm that newly built homes may lack. Perhaps it’s their lived-in feel or design elements that remind homeowners of yesteryear that make older homes so popular among home buyers. What older homes have in character they may lack in modern amenities. For example, whereas many homes are now built with energy efficiency in mind, older homes may not be so eco-friendly. Fortunately, there are many ways for homeowners who love their older homes to keep that love going strong while making their homes more energy efficient at the same time.

STORING TOOLS PROPERLY REDUCES INJURY RISK AND PROMOTES ORGANIZATION

Whether homeowners have a handful of tools or an entire collection of equipment, proper storage of these items means the difference between staying organized and safe or having to waste time looking for tools and running the risk of injury.

Tools often gravitate to other rooms of the house or become misplaced. When they’re brought out for use, tools may not be returned to the toolbox or shed, taking up residence in drawers or closets or just being left out in the open.

Improper storage of tools also may create safety risks for the persons doing the renovation and other members of the household. The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that hundreds of thousands of injuries treated at emergency rooms are related to power tools and workshop equipment. While the majority of these injuries occur while using the tools, improper tool storage can still cause injury.

By taking care of tools and keeping them orderly, homeowners can lengthen the life expectancy of their tools and reduce the likelihood of tool-related injury.

Parking area negligence

It is deplorable how many public buildings do not take care of handicap parking spots. Last year I had to quit physical therapy because you could not safely get from the car to the building. Their response “the landlord is responsible for clearing the parking lot and sidewalks.” I quit. Ff they were concerned for anyones well-being, they would address it………or was that job security for them? The handicap spots at the local senior center are never clear. They should be bone dry. I realize they cannot plow or salt when there are cars in the spots, but they should instruct their drivers to clear and salt before the center opens or after it closes. It is just common sense.

Thank you Guardian Angel!

Thank you to the gentleman who was in Geneseo Noyes Urgent Care on Saturday, January 14th. I had arrived for an X-ray but there was no order on file from the doctor. The receptionist suggested I go through urgent care who would then write a script. I was worried about the cost of taking that approach. The gentleman was sitting in the waiting room and spoke up that he would pay for my urgent care visit. I was amazed someone would be willing to do that. In the meantime, they were able to get ahold of my doctor and get the script. Regardless, I won’t forget the kindness a stranger was willing to give to me.

Purple Pony

I would just like to say thank you to The Genesee Valley Penny Saver for printing the wonderful article on Purple Pony. I had no idea they even existed. Horses are truly amazing, and to help with special needs of all ages tells a lot about these magnificent animals. Thank you, Purple Pony!

Response to "garbage plate modification"

I suppose it's none of my business how one modifies a garbage plate. While the modification of adding fish sticks to a plate with hot dogs and all the fixings is nothing short of, in my personal opinion, disgusting, I am more disturbed that someone is eating this every single day. Perhaps slowly adding in other lunches like salads and low-fat sandwiches would be beneficial to this person. As a medical professional, I see far too many people with garbage plate-related maladies in the greater Rochester area.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR

Set up an accountability system. Institute a rewards system for your success. You might even use a monetary system as a double-bonus. When you stick to a resolution over a predetermined period, put a dollar in a jar. If you fall off course, take a dollar away. Find the incentive that works for you.

2 SUMMIT ST. • BATAVIA

Located in the St. Joseph’s Annex

While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

Bring small bills. In a world where credit and debit cards prevail, yard sales stand out as cash-only endeavors. Save the seller the hassle of breaking big bills and using up all of his or her change by bringingalongsmalldenominations and even some change.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD

Make your goals public. By publicly declaring your intention to improve your life, you’re putting some positive pressure on yourself to fully commit to your goal. Friends and loved ones can be great sources of support, and once they’re aware of your efforts, you likely won’t want to let them down. Once you have decidedonaresolution, postyour short-term and long-term goals to your Facebook page or let your immediate family and closest friends know of your goals in person. Their encouragement can help you stay on track, and they may even offer to help you realize your goals.
