Thank you to all the workers at Dollar General, Big M, the Post Office and C Bank, from Grandma Carol Creswell of Bloomfield. I want to thank the nice person at the Tim Hortons Spencerport drive For weeks, our local grocery store has posted that they were reducing hours, closing at 8 p.m. Well, ok, but on Saturday, Nov. 9, I pulled into the parking lot at 7:51, and the employees were already in their cars, pulling out of the mostly empty employee parking lot. I checked cellphone time. I thought there might be a few left inside, so I watched as another customer went to the door, which was already locked. She shook the door. No one came, so she walked back to her car, angrily yelling to me they were closed early. I pulled out of the parking lot at 7:55 and went to another town to buy what I needed, but I had driven about 5 miles out of my way to buy locally; I won’t make that mistake again. Management is failing when employees close store before posted hours, alienating customers. Don’t be fooled by all the advertisements for “free range” turkeys from a recently GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

thru. I was just grabbing some coffee and a hot cocoa for myself and my handicapped mother. It was Christmas Eve at about 11:30 am. When I pulled up to the window, the girl said the person ahead of me had paid for me and the car behind me. What a wonderful thing to do! I have never had someone do that for me. Your kindness will be paid forward. Thank you and Merry Christmas. - Sheila Ryan, Spencerport On 12/20/19 I was shopping at Tops Market in Batavia and got more restarted local operation - I drive by this farm Monday through Friday, and these birds are packed tighter than sardines. Most of them never venture outside. Even worse -- the barn doors remained open, with some birds outdoors due to crowding and others packed against open doors, even during our recent snow and extreme cold. I never see anyone around to monitor them. I fully support buying local, but these birds do not seem “as advertised” or well cared for. Drive by and see for yourselves before buying. This is shameful. I hate to rant; I really do but walking the canal from [local spot] to [local spot] should make all who do it rant in similar fashion. I’m a dog lover. I have one, always have, but to think of walking him, letting him poop on the canal path, or right next to it, and not picking it up and disposing of it properly is

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

than I planned on. So, I asked for some help getting the bags to my car. It was very busy in the store due to Christmas (no help showed up) when suddenly a handsome stranger asked if he could help me and I said “yes.” He ignored the cell phone call from my plumber who called on the way to my car and put all away all my groceries and shut the trunk. I blessed him and he wished me a Merry Christmas. Was this a young Santa Claus? I think so… This was so nice of a stranger. Don’t know his name, but he was so polite. He brightened this 87-year old’s day! absolutely unacceptable! What are you thinking when you allow your dog to do so before you just walk away and forget about it? Equally disgusting is the person(s) who actually picks it up, bags it and then leaves the filled bag along the path on a stone or under a bush. What are you thinking? Are you entitled? Do you think someone else will just come along and pick it up? You are responsible for your dog’s mess. I am not! We are getting to that time of year when the weather becomes freezing and harsh. Some people have been misinformed when it comes to dogs surviving outside during these times. They want to be warm and comfortable just like we do. Bring your pets inside, no matter what you use them for. No one around you wants to listen to them cry and bark all day and night because they’re hurting, freezing or going crazy in the tiny space they’re kept in 24/7.

MaryAnn, you are a Christmas angel. The boys appreciated the clothes. Thank you for all you did! JH My boys and I would like to thank a generous “Christmas elf” for making our Christmas extra special this year. The Christmas spirit is alive and well, and my children had the most wonderful Christmas. Thank you, and God bless you! One

I work as a cashier, and today I had what was probably the worst experience since I started cashiering with a mother and father and their completely undisciplined child. The child seemed to be about seven or eight years old, so I’m not blaming him. The child shoved past me, tried to steal my personal property, attempted to press buttons on the cash register, and generally disturbed everyone in not only my line, but in my neighbors’ lines, as well. The parents pretty much just let their child run free. I sincerely hope that both are embarrassed about this. If you can’t control your child, then one of you should take him outside to your car. Please do not come back to my store, or if you do, please stay out of my line. Everyone in the vicinity was mortified by your child’s behavior.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Events could inspire adventurous Lambs looking to make a major career or personal move. But as always, get all the facts before rushing into any sort of deal or commitment. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) What seems to be a great opportunity could cause even usually practical Taureans to ignore their inner caution cues. Best to move carefully to avoid falling into unseen traps. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Need a holiday now that the seasonal festivities are behind you? Good idea. Plan to go someplace wonderful. You’ll return refreshed and more than ready for a new challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Progress continues to be made on that pesky workplace problem. Meanwhile, don’t assume a personal situation will work itself out. Best to get more involved earlier than later. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Catnaps are definitely recommended for Leos and Leonas who had been going at a hectic pace over the holidays. Adding relaxation time to your schedule helps restore your overdrawn energy reserves. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Sure, some of the new friends you made over the holidays might move out of your life at some point. But at least one might show significant “staying power” with some encouragement. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Encourage family members to join you in supporting a relative who could be facing a difficult emotional challenge in the New Year. Showing your love and concern helps keep his or her hopes up. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While a long-deferred decision suddenly might take on some urgency after news on a related matter, you still need to weigh all factors carefully before deciding one way or the other. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good time to reassess the earlier plan you made for the New Year. Some elements you felt you could depend on to make it work might no longer carry that assurance. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Forming a renewed connection with a former associate is only the first step toward working out your new plans. Be prepared for problems, and deal with them as soon as they arise. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A romantic situation that was going smoothly not too long ago might take a new turn. Be honest about your feelings before you decide whether to follow it or take another path. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The wise Pisces (that’s you, of course) will make sure everyone knows your plan to keep your options open and listen to all sides of the situation before making any decisions. BORN THIS WEEK: Your honest approach to life and living is always an inspiration for others fortunate enough to know you.

ALLY

Meet ...She was abandoned under a pick-up truck with her 8 puppies in Heflin, Alabama. They all came north and were adopted. After only 6 months up north, ALLY was certified as a therapy dog. She provided over 300 therapy visits in our previous Capital District home. We moved here 9 months ago and since early August, ALLY has gone miles in many directions almost every week to visit the Children and Adult programs of CP Rochester and Happiness House in Canandaigua and Geneva. Everyone loves Ally. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Jan. 1, 1818, “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus” is published. The book by 20-year-old Mary Shelley is frequently called the world’s first science fiction novel. In Shelley’s tale, a scientist animates a creature constructed from dismembered corpses.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Jan. 8, 1835, President Andrew Jackson achieves his goal of entirely paying off the United States’ national debt. It was the only time in U.S. history that the national debt stood at zero, and it precipitated one of the worst financial crises in American history, the Panic of 1837. On Jan. 9, 1861, a Union merchant ship is fired upon as it tries to deliver supplies to Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, in the first exchange of shots between North and South. The shots were fired by gunner George E. Haynsworth, a cadet at The Citadel in Charleston. On Jan. 7, 1927, the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team travels west from Chicago to play their first game, in Hinckley, Illinois. Coach Abe Saperstein decided to promote his new team’s racial makeup by naming them after Harlem, the famous black neighborhood of New York City.

Life insurance is a product few people want to think about. That’s perfectly understandable, as life insurance forces men and women to consider their own mortality. But life insurance is not something adults should avoid, especially if they have dependents. Many people should consider life insurance when estate planning so they can provide security for their loved ones. But life insurance is a purchase unlike any other, and people may be confused or intimidated when attempting to purchase life insurance policies. Deciding if you need coverage While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death. Buying life insurance Much like various other types of insurance, life insurance can be purchased from an insurance agent or via an insurance company’s website. When choosing a company from which to buy a life insurance policy, look for a company with a strong rating, as no one wants to end up being burned by a life insurance provider who goes out of business. Some people prefer to work with independent brokers who can share information about products from various providers rather than just the ones offered by the firm company-affiliated agents work for. Choosing coverage When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow taxfree so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses. Life insurance merits serious consideration, and adults should do their homework and fully understand a policy before signing any contracts. MM15C708

GET THE MOST OUT OF BRIDAL SHOWS AND WEDDING EVENTS Pre-register. Pre-registering for bridal events saves time at check-in, and doing so may make you eligible for discounted tickets.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot. CURE!! TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2016. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

Turmeric Can be Helpful for Arthritis Pain ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 88 and have had osteoarthritis in my hands and knees since I was in my 50s. I began taking Tylenol and Advil for pain. But on a recommendation from a health food store clerk, I started taking turmeric. Since that first dose, I have never had to take any pain medication again. I also have not had a knee replacement. My specialist is very pleased with my condition, and encourages my use of turmeric. I plan to up the dose from 150 mg daily because of research that shows its benefits in avoiding Alzheimer’s disease. -- D.D.L. ANSWER: Turmeric has been shown to be helpful in some people with osteoarthritis, and is unlikely to have serious side effects; however, stomach upset is possible, and turmeric should be used with caution in people on warfarin or other anticoagulants. However, there is no good evidence showing that turmeric prevents or treats dementia.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been hearing a lot about making yogurt at home. Is homemade yogurt a recipe for food poisoning? -- H.C. ANSWER: Homemade yogurt is easy to make, can be more healthy than store-bought as it has very little sugar, and can be made very safely with minimal precautions. The key is to make sure the milk is fresh and sterile, then to carefully add in healthy bacteria. All you need to do is boil fresh milk to a bare simmer (to kill any unhealthy bacteria); cool it down to 100-110 F (37-42 C), which is an optimal temperature for growth of the healthy bacteria that help prevent the growth of unhealthy bacteria or yeast; stir in a few tablespoons of plain yogurt with active healthy bacterial cultures; and keep it in a warm place for six to 12 hours or so. You can use the yogurt you just made as the starter for the next batch. Add in some pureed fresh fruit, and you have a healthier, tastier and cheaper yogurt than you can buy at the store. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I take 40 mg of lisinopril for high blood pressure. One doctor told me to take a 40 mg tablet in the morning, while another said to take 20 mg in the morning and 20 mg in the evening. Will separating the dosage better control my blood pressure? On average, mine is 130/75. -- M.A.P. ANSWER: For lisinopril in particular, taking the medication twice daily showed a better reduction in blood pressure than once daily, according to a study performed last year. People who took lisinopril twice daily had about a 10-point systolic (4 point diastolic) improvement in BP control, so your blood pressure might be more like 120/71 if you started taking it in two doses, if you are similar to the subjects in the study (that sounds like a big drop to me, despite the study results). People who are doing just fine on once-daily lisinopril don’t need to change. Don’t make any changes in your medication without discussing it with your own doctor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Jan. 4, 1896, six years after Wilford Woodruff, president of the Mormon Church, issued his Manifesto reforming political, religious and economic life in Utah, the territory is admitted into the Union as the 45th state. We Care About ut

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

A TOTAL KNOCKOUT While more than five million children’s and adult’s teeth are knocked out annually due to injury or accident, it is possible to replant these teeth if you know what to do. The first tooth-saving step is to quickly pick up the knocked-out (“avulsed”) tooth by the crown (chewing surface), not the root. Gently rinse it off under a stream of tap water. Do not scrub or use soap or chemicals. Then, place the tooth back in its socket, gently holding it by the crown. Slowly push it into place and hold it there. While it is possible to save a tooth that has been outside the mouth for an hour or more, it is best to contact a dentist immediately. We’ll do all we can at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL to help you not only keep your teeth, but to keep them healthy and strong and smiling their brightest. Our

philosophy is not only to treat dental needs, but more importantly, to educate our patients about preventing future problems from occurring and how deal with them when they do. When you are looking for state-of-the-art, personalized dentistry from people who really care, welcome to 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment. P.S. If it is not possible to reposition a knocked-out tooth in its socket, place it in a glass of water or milk and immediately call the dentist.

XBO International of Byron stepped up to support the town of Byron in helping others! The Byron Rescue Squad ambulance was showing its age. At twelve years old, it was in dire need of some care. “Our rescue squad has many dedicated members,” EMT Captain Brad Nickerson said. “We have, in this time of closing ambulance services, expanded our own. Our team consists of some Advanced EMTs along with EMTs and regular firemen who happily pitch in when needed. Our team has dedicated over 1,000-man hours of their personal time answering calls. Plus hundreds of hours in trainings to keep their skills current when every minute counts!” Although the Byron Fire Department pays for the squad’s insurance, lodging and fuel which helps greatly, the squad runs on donations to keep up on education, supplies and maintenance. That maintenance is costing the department more and more each year due to the aging of the ambulance. “Our annual fund drive covers the bills only, but saving to replace our rig with donations seems unreachable, so for now we are just trying to keep it going,” Nickerson said. This is where OXBO, Byron’s local industry, stepped in. The running boards on the rig were hanging on by a thread; they were unsafe. Also, the back bumpers were in rough shape, one was being held in place with a bungee cord.

New back bumpers!

EMT Laura Platt decided she would ask her husband, Doug, who works at OXBO to ask his boss, Chris Chadborn, if OXBO could help. Chadborn did not hesitate; he said. “Bring it down!” Assistant Chief, John Durand, and Platt drove the rig the couple miles to OXBO where a team immediately came out to assess the vehicle. The team determined that they could make new running boards and steps using the old ones as patterns. Not wanting to keep the rig out of service, Steve Lockner, another Byron firefighter, along with Durand, removed the parts. Platt’s husband took

them to OXBO on his next work day. When Platt asked Chadborn about the cost of replacing those parts, he simply replied, “One hand washes the other.” “Our ambulance looked a little rough as we continued to answer calls while the parts were in the process of being replaced by OXBO,” said Platt. “But it wasn’t long before my husband, Doug, came home from work with the new shiny black running boards and bumpers.” Both Lockner and Durand installed the new parts immediately. “Our rig was safe once again, and how great it looks with the new parts made to perfection!” said Platt. “This Holiday Season the Byron Rescue Squad is very thankful to OXBO International for the gift of their expertise in metal works which has allowed us to continue helping our little community,” Platt continued. “Next year’s wish is to somehow secure funding to start the process of replacing our 12year old ambulance. A new ambulance would cost $200,000 - $300,000, not including the equipment. A new ambulance would give our dedicated and willing volunteers even more ways to come to the aid of our community.” Enjoy this article? Thank You Our heartfelt thank you to our family, friends, Livingston County Hospice, the wonderful group of caregivers who helped us with our evenings, and the Caledonia-Mumford community who provided us support while our beloved Sandy was in hospice at home. We are very grateful to those who organized meals, prepared food for us, made soup for Sandy, and sent flowers and cards. We would like to thank all those who filled the church to share with us in the celebration of Sandy’s life. We want to express our gratitude to Pastor Laurel Nelson and Alhart’s Funeral Home for their guidance, to those who provided their music and singing at Sandy’s service and to those who furnished the delicious luncheon after the service. With Appreciation, The family of Sandy Peterson

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Emphasize time management. Hectic schedules can quickly derail resolutions. Many people want to eat healthier and exercise more but find their time is stretched pretty thin, which can make it difficult to get to the gym or prepare healthy meals at home. Finding ways to manage time more effectively can make it easier to stay committed to New Year’s resolutions. Right down your daily schedule and look for ways to free up time. If you routinely take an hour for lunch each day, use that time to exercise and eat at your desk when you return from your walk, workout or jog. Try to wake up 30 to 60 minutes earlier each morning to exercise, and make use of time before bed by preparing a healthy lunch for the following day. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The relationship between eating and exercise Diet and exercise are each vital components of a healthy lifestyle. While these components tend to be looked at separately, diet and exercise are actually interconnected. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, adequate food and fluid should be consumed before, during and after exercise. Following that advice can help men and women maintain their blood glucose concentration during exercise, which allows them to maximize their performance and improves their recovery time. Some people understandably may feel that eating before exercising seems counterintuitive, as food may contribute to feelings of sluggishness that would make it hard to maximize a workout. But what people eat, and drink, prior to working out is important, as the right foods can make a positive impact while the wrong foods can have the opposite effect. The American Heart Association and the ACSM recommend hydrating with water prior to working out. The ACSM recommends drinking between two and three cups of water two to three hours before exercising. Adults accustomed to working out in the early morning can try to wake up earlier so they can give their bodies time to hydrate before they begin exercising. It’s also important to continue hydrating during a workout, as the ACSM recommends drinking between 1/2 and one cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes during a workout (amounts can be adjusted based on variables such as the weather and individuals’ body sizes). After a workout, the ACSM recommends drinking two to three cups of water for every pound lost during the exercise session. Food also plays a vital role in maximizing a workout and improving recovery time. The AHA recommends fueling up on healthy

carbohydrates, such as whole-grain cereals, whole-wheat toast or low-fat or fat-free yogurt, two hours before exercising. Doing so might pose a problem for early morning exercise enthusiasts, and in such instances the AHA advises eating a piece of fruit such as an apple or banana five to 10 minutes before beginning a workout. Avoid saturated fats and a lot of healthy protein prior to working out, as it takes longer for these fuels to digest in the stomach. Until foods are digested, muscles may not get all of the oxygen and energy-delivering blood they need during a workout, so it’s best to stick with foods that the body can digest more quickly. The Mayo Clinic notes that it’s also important to make food a part of your post-workout routine. Eating a post-workout meal that contains both carbohydrates and protein can aid muscle recovery and replace glycogen stores that help increase energy levels after working out. The most effective way to exercise involves healthy foods, which can improve performance and lead to quicker post-workout recovery.

THE BIBLE SAYS: “Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the LORD your God.” (Deuteronomy 29:6) “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” (Proverbs 20:1) “It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:”(Proverbs 31:4) “Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!” (Isaiah 5:11) “But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.” (Isaiah 28:7) “Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.” (Isaiah 29:9) For further help, write: Burke Hill Bible Church, P. CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
