Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body.

Active Living 50+ ____________________19

Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

I have had an irregular heartbeat for four years, and sometimes I feel lightheaded, dizzy or tired. I worry about it getting worse. Would you please give a detailed explanation about irregular heartbeat, including how or why it happens? What should I do to prevent it from getting worse? Is it life threatening? Will it become atrial fibrillation? Also, I am a chocolate lover and eat dark chocolate every day. But I was told that cocoa will make my irregular heartbeat worse and I should stop eating dark chocolate. Is that true? -- Q.Y. ANSWER: Everyone has irregular heartbeats from time-to-time. Early beats can come from electrically active areas anywhere in the heart, and an electrocardiogram can tell whether they are from the atria (the top chambers) or the ventricles (the bottom chambers) of the heart. An average person may have 500 or so of these a day -- some people have many more. Most are seldom aware of them. Having patients with this concern over and over during my career, I can reassure you that most cases turn out to be nothing to worry about. However, the fact that you are having symptoms, especially the lightheadedness and fatigue, is a warning sign, and I recommend you get an evaluation. Start with your regular medical provider, after which you may be referred to a cardiologist. The EKG in his or her office is a first step, but you may need a longer evaluation, such as wearing a 24-hour EKG (a Holter monitor) or newer technologies that allow longer readings. Atrial fibrillation is a concern, because most people will need treatment to reduce stroke risk or to return the rhythm to normal. Nevertheless, there are many other kinds of irregular heart rhythms, and you need a diagnosis first. If no cause is found, there are medications to reduce the irregularity, but they are seldom used. My experience is that when a person knows they are not dangerous, they can be lived with more easily. Chocolate does contain theobromide, a substance that can make the heart a little more irritable, but it takes a lot of chocolate to have a significant effect. It’s related to caffeine in coffee. Interestingly, a recent study found that chocolate lovers are less likely to develop atrial fibrillation, so the situation is more complex than just one chemical. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that drinking warm lemon water with honey has many health benefits, partially because lemons are an alkaline food. Is this correct? -- B.W. ANSWER: I think I saw the same article. Lemon water may have some health benefits, but it is not an alkaline food, and drinking it has almost no impact on the acidity of your blood or urine, because the body’s buffer systems (the chemical processes used to keep the pH carefully regulated) are so effective. Lemons have a pH of about 2, so they are highly acidic. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) makes the urine more acidic. There is no consistent evidence that the foods we eat have a health benefit due solely to their effect on body pH. Many of the foods recommended for their supposed alkaline effects are indeed healthy, but for other, complex reasons apart from pH. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You need to be certain that all the right conditions are in place before you take that first step. It can’t hurt to listen to good advice from those who have your best interests at heart. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Be careful not to get involved in other people’s disputes unless you know the facts behind the disagreements. That’s the best way to be assured of making wise and honest decisions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You still need to be careful about how you’re going to spend those energy reserves you finally got around to restoring. Best advice: Avoid overdoing it. Let things take their course. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect continues to favor travel -- alone or with that special person. So if you’ve been putting off making those getaway plans, it’s still a good time to get started on them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Those so-called golden opportunities that continue to dazzle the Lion still need to be carefully checked out. Be suspicious about anything that looks like the “perfect” prospect. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Changes at the workplace could make it more difficult to do things the way you prefer. But the wise Virgo who shows some flexibility could find it paying off in a big way. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might want to check out the explanation you were given for a sudden shift in your duties. There’s a possibility that you haven’t been told all the facts that you deserve to know. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Having confidence in your abilities is important, especially when you could be facing a new challenge, whether it’s in the workplace or in a personal relationship. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new work-related opportunity might not be all that it seems. Before making any decisions, you might want to check with others who have had some experience in that area. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A situation involving someone close could benefit from your timely intervention. Avoid being judgmental. There’ll be plenty of time later for those “little talks” you like to have. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel could be a surprise element in that new project. Be prepared for other previously undisclosed aspects that also might come to light as you proceed with the work. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Try to balance your work-related responsibilities with the time you’re spending on your recently revived social life. An old friend might be planning to return after a long absence. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sensitivity makes you aware of the needs of others. Have you considered a career as a counselor?

Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

COMPLETE FOREIGN & DOMESTIC AUTO REPAIR!

Exercise extra caution when driving on roadways during the winter, as they may contain ice or snow. All it takes is a small coating of precipitation on roadways to make driving treacherous. Wetlooking roadways may be wet, or they may be covered by ice, and it’s difficult to tell the difference with the naked eye. Always slow down and assume you are driving on ice. Make every effort to improve visibility. This includes checking windshield washer fluid levels and ensuring windshield blades are in good working order.

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

Caledonia Scouts Honored by Assemblywoman Byrnes By Amanda Dudek

F

ive former Caledonia seniors from Troop 4027 recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout, an impressive feat in a class of 64 students. Eagle Scouts Brenden Gardner and Matt Keller were honored in September 2019 while the remaining three celebrated at the Big Springs Museum on Saturday, January 11th. New York State Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes and Monroe County Legislator Steve Brew attended this Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony. Both Byrnes and Brew respectively presented each Eagle Scout with a certificate recognizing their accomplishment. These three young men - Brice Hatch, Evan Maniscalco and Ryan Pelkey - became Eagle Scouts, completing their respective projects and passing the Eagle Board. “Matt Keller built a firewood storage Unit for the Genesee Country Village & Museum’s maple sap evaporator,” said Troop 4027 Scoutmaster Hatch. “Brenden Gardner painted inside the Eunice Lodge in Caledonia. Ryan Pelkey constructed a turtle enclosure, including a fence, viewing area and pool at the Genesee Country Village & Museum.” “My son Brice built two benches along Oatka Park hiking trails in Scottsville,” continued Hatch. “He also planted 100 trees, 50 white spruce and 50 sycamores. Evan Maniscalco built and installed two Little Free Libraries at the Genesee Country Village Nature Center.” “Each Scout needs to plan and facilitate a project as part of their Eagle Scout requirement,” explained Hatch. “They typically receive help in completing their project from fellow Scouts, friends and family.” Each project requires approximately 100 service hours and is one of the final things a Life Scout must do to complete their Eagle Scout application before turning 18.

Little Library designs online, and we picked one we felt would work well.” Of course, the project was not without its challenges. “Building them was the biggest challenge,” explained Maniscalco. “[The plans] weren’t super detailed, so we had to take some liberties on the designs to get it to work better. It wasn’t super hard, but it definitely took a lot of brain power.” The only installation snag was along the Geology Trail where the ground is harder and rockier. The project was a success. “They were very happy,” affirmed Maniscalco, referring to the museum. Maniscalco’s family first introduced him to Boy Scouts, bringing him to his older brother’s Cub Scout meetings before moving away. “My family pushed for it,” he said. “I wasn’t really sure.” It was Maniscalco’s grandfather who helped him make his decision. “He said he would help me out along the way,” he recalled. “He would drive about an hour to where the meetings were, which was right across the street from where I lived. It was really nice of him. He didn’t have to, but he did that for me.” Maniscalco loved the Scouts, making new friends in a new town. “It was a great opportunity and experience for me,” he shared. “I got swept up in the whole thing, and next thing you know, I was working on my Eagle project.”

There are several ranks in the Boy Scouts: Cub, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle. “Only about 4% of Scouts reach Eagle level, so it is quite the accomplishment,” said Hatch. “This is a good group of young men, and they worked very hard.” Project choices are largely up to the individual Scout.

Being recognized by Assemblywoman Byrnes and Legislator Steve Brew was an unexpected privilege. “I was honored that they came,” said Maniscalco. “I was really surprised. No one told me beforehand, so when they came up and made their speeches, I was like, ‘Wow!’ This is awesome.” As for joining Boy Scouts, Evan Maniscalco recommends it, crediting his parents’ support and noting that his Scout friends are some the best he has. “I think the image portrayed by the media and in movies of scouting isn’t accurate,” he said. “They show people just going into the woods and doing goofy, little camping stuff. The things I learned, I really couldn’t find anywhere else, and it was definitely worth it. It helped me grow into a man.”

“Brice’s grandparents lives very close to Oatka Creek Park, and he wanted to do something to help her and the community,” Hatch shared. “He built two benches so that if his grandparents wanted to go for a walk and sit down on one of these benches and take a breather, they could.”

Evan Maniscalco described his Eagle Scout project. “I built two Little Free Libraries for the Genesee Country Village and Museum,” he said. “The one on the Geology Trail will have books related to geology, rocks, fossils and the like. The other one, next to Ryan Pelkey’s turtle enclosure, will have books about nature, turtles and other animals in the area.”

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Feb. 8, 1587, after 19 years of imprisonment, Mary Queen of Scots is beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle in England for her complicity in a plot to murder Queen Elizabeth I. In 1542, while just six days old, Mary had ascended to the Scottish throne upon the death of her father, King James V.

Trees Not Tombstones: New Options For End-of-Life (NAPS)—The vast majority of Americans have not completed their end-of-life planning. In fact, over half of those age 45-plus have done no end-of-life planning at all, according to a recent survey conducted by Better Place Forests, the country’s first sustainable alternative to cemeteries for families that choose cremation. Better Place Forests hopes the idea of a beautiful, sustainable final resting place will encourage people to create those plans. Instead of tombstones, the company incorporates ashes into the base of beautiful trees in permanently protected forests. The company performs spreading ceremonies in the forest, where families can gather to say goodbye. Currently, there are two forests in California, in Point Arena in Mendocino County and in Santa Cruz, and the company plans to open more across the country.

* On Feb. 4, 1913, Rosa Parks is born Rosa Louise McCauley in Tuskegee, Alabama. Parks’ name has become synonymous with her refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus in 1955. * On Feb. 6, 1928, a woman calling herself Anastasia Tschaikovsky and claiming to be the youngest daughter of the murdered Russian czar Nicholas II Romanov arrives in New York City. It wasn’t until 1994 that Anastasia’s DNA showed her to be Franziska Schanzkowska, a Polish-German factory worker.

There is a growing trend toward greener burial options in the United States. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, nearly 54 percent of Americans are considering a green burial and 72 percent of cemeteries report an increased demand for green burials. Thousands of people have already reserved trees for themselves. “Making plans and establishing guidelines for the end of your life means that loved ones don’t have to guess about your wishes and you can give them the experience you’d like them to have when you pass,” explained Sandy Gibson, CEO of Better Place Forests. “At Better Place Forests, we talk to people every day who find peace in knowing they have created a beautiful experience for their loved ones by selecting a family tree.” Beyond providing a more beautiful final resting place, choosing a tree in one of these memorial forests means you are leaving a legacy of conservation. The company performs spreading ceremonies in the forest, where families can gather to say goodbye and continue to visit—a feature current cremation options can’t provide. The trusts also actively manage the land to ensure that it’s less susceptible to forest fires. They hire forestry experts to keep the trees healthy and the forests free of invasive species. In addition, more trees are planted in areas in need for every tree a customer chooses. Thousands of trees have already been planted in forests devastated by the California wildfires. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.betterplaceforests.com. A beautiful forest can be a final resting place that brings comfort to family and friends. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Though Law Enforcement Appreciation Day has passed, it is not too late to thank the men and women who put a uniform on every day to protect and serve. Saturday afternoon, I was sitting in my living room in Webster. As I looked out the window, I saw a man riding his bike. On People need to seriously start picking up the poop from their dogs! I am so tired of, and disgusted by, dog poop all over the place, including my front lawn. I have a large dog that I walk every day, and I 100% pick up after him. You know who you are; stop it! After reading about a disruptive child in a checkout line especially when the child tried to steal personal property and was messing with the cash register, I have to wonder why this cashier did not immediately call for the manager to come to the front of the store and handle this situation. That is one of the responsibilities of a store or front-end manager. Does anyone in the [local town] know what a stop sign is or how to stop? I realize that you think GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

directionals are optional, but stop signs are not. Also, while waiting to go over the one bridge we have, don’t park across people’s driveways. Finally, to those who buy their coffee at the little shop in the village, stop parking where it is not a parking spot, so that anyone handicapped can’t enter other businesses. Can any of you be considerate?

all. Maybe this is one reason why so many restaurants and businesses are going under. The added costs to do any kind of business in New York State are outrageous! Add to this the lack of any customer service, and it would equal disaster and fewer jobs. Minimum wage goes up; then all prices go up, so no one gains anything in the end. Having no state income tax would help.

Far too many chain restaurants are forgetting about good customer service, i.e. good wait staff etiquette, and worrying about profit over customers. If you’ve ever learned economics in school, when they used to actually teach basic life skills as part of the regular curriculum, you would have learned that without customers to serve, you have no money, and no profit is made at

Please, please, please, if you put garbage out for collection, be considerate of your neighbors and do your best to make sure your bins don’t tip! Every time garbage day is windy, my yard ends up strewn with wind-blown trash and recycling. If people simply took a little more care with how they fill and place their bins, I wouldn’t be stuck picking up and disposing of someone else’s garbage.

Weeks before Christmas, I had put up my Christmas lights on my house on a typical village street. At dark, I went outside and stood on the sidewalk, inspecting the joy when I heard footfalls in the snow on the street and saw that a woman was jogging toward me. Simple courtesy called for some kind of acknowledgment, and I smiled and said hello, not thinking that a man standing on a sidewalk at dusk could appear sketchy. Immediately, she got an unpleasant look, muttered something unpleasant and sprinted away down the street. I felt bad instantly for making her uncomfortable. I understand, and her reaction wasn’t wrong, but it’s a shame that a simple smile and hello can cause fear or discomfort. The world got a little colder for me that day.

EXPLORING SOLAR ELECTRICITY Solar panels are seen more and more on roofs of residential homes and even some businesses. Due in part to more aggressive marketing by solar energy companies, as well as greater awareness by customers, solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years. The Solar Energy Industries Association® reports that solar energy in the United States is booming. The association offers that, since the passage of The Solar Investment Tax Credit in 2006, solar has experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60 percent. While many might assume that environmental preservation is the driving force behind the growing popularity of solar energy, it’s actually the financial benefits of solar energy that are leading the way. One Block Off the Grid polled nearly 200 solar homeowners to learn more about their motivations for going solar. Roughly 75 percent would not have gone solar if there was no economic benefit to doing so. A number of people who have switched to solar say they are getting a high rate of return on the investment. The average electricity bill a person saw prior to solar energy hovered around $177 a month. After the conversion, bills were now as low as $55.

• A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

PAINTING/PAPERING

BEAT CABIN FEVER WITH WINTER RENOVATIONS

Drywall and Painting (585) 749-5343 Interior/Exterior Painting Hanging and Finishing Drywall

When the weather outside is frightful, homeowners and renters can turn their interior spaces into something delightful. Residents can banish feelings of cabin fever by using time spent inside to make subtle or even substantial improvements to their living areas. Individuals may find that winter is a great time to tackle delayed or unfinished projects or to put plans for major renovations in motion. Homeowners may find that they have some extra time on their hands when weather and early evening darkness reduces how much time they can spend outdoors. One of the easiest ways to transform the look of a room is with a fresh coat of paint. Painting a room or rooms is an inexpensive project that can be completed over the course of a single weekend. Painting in lighter colors can help illuminate dark spaces and make a home feel more vivid and inviting, especially during the winter. And painting need not be reserved for walls only. Homeowners may want to sand and paint furniture to give items a trendy arts-and-crafts feel. Address drafts and other inefficiencies. Colder temperatures alert homeowners to drafts, leaks and even insect or rodent infiltration. Homeowners can scout out rooms and remedy situations. Organize the home. Rainy or snowy days are great moments to address organizational issues, such as messy mudrooms or cluttered kitchens. Get a jump-start on spring cleaning before the warm weather arrives.

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES

Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money. How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment.

PLUMBING

You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also:

Need A Plumber?

• Easily cut

• All water heaters including tankless • High efficiency furnaces, AC & boilers • Water conditioning systems & Goulds well pumps • All general household plumbing • Drain cleaning

• Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. HOME SERVICES

(NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task.

When shopping for a cruise, see if there are discounts available for seniors, teachers, people in the military, or those who belong to certain clubs. Cruises often love to incentivize, so it pays to ask about discount pricing.

After moving, getting acclimated to a new neighborhood and making new friends is one way to feel at home.

CREATE A SALE-WORTHY SHOWPLACE The sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover” can be applied to many situations. When it comes to selling their homes, homeowners should remember this adage as they prepare their homes for prospective buyers. Homeowners who want to make their properties stand out can take the following steps.

DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE TO THE OVER 50 CROWD: Auto rentals: AARP members are eligible to save up to 30 percent on base rates for vehicle rentals at some rental agencies.

Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary.

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months. REAL ESTATE

De-personalize the home. Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items.

Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on. Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms. Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones. Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean. Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents. Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE

The Monroe County Farm Service Agency is looking for a full-time, temporary Program Technician with an anticipated start date of March 16th, 2020. Incumbent is responsible for carrying out office activities and functions pertaining to a broad variety of FSA Commodity Programs utilizing current computer web-based software.

Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.

Those interested may apply at

Monroe County Farm Service Agency 1200-A Scottsville Road, Rochester, NY 14624. Applications (Form FSA-675) will be accepted until February 21st, 2020. Any questions please call 585-473-3440 Ext. 2 USDA is an equal opportunity provider.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put your own voice in the résumé. Rather than using standard verbiage on your résumé, personalize what you want to say. Hiring managers want to hire a human, not a machine. When speaking about yourself, be sure to use strong action words that define your skills even further.
