Bra measurements are hard to come by, no doubt thanks in part to the nature of getting measured in such an intimate area of the body. But considering undergarments set the foundation for all clothing worn on top, this is one of the more important measurements to verify. Enlist the help of a friend or family member to make measurements go more smoothly.
DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 12, 1838, after his Mormon bank fails in the Panic of 1837, Joseph Smith flees Kirtland, Ohio, to avoid potential criminal prosecution by angry and disillusioned former believers. Smith claimed the angel Moroni had visited him in 1823 and told him he was destined to become a modern prophet of God.

DIETING AND DINING OUT
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States. Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course.
Lessons, training, good food, water, shelter at all times, NO MUD! Great pastures, groomed trails, clean, dry, 10x12 matted stalls. Outside ring, board + electric fencing. Never left out in bad weather, 20 minutes from Rochester. Full care, gelds.
Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy.

Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings. Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit. Dining out is incredibly popular, and dieters don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants. Page 6

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Confused Why are we even talking about paying off college debts? They signed for the loan, then they should pay off their loan. Here’s a better idea: how about paying off medical debts instead, especially for cancer patients? School loans are a choice, cancer is not. If this administration wants to patronize and buy votes here’s a better way to earn them.
S E V RA Hometown People are Awesome We at the Livonia Historical Society would like to express our sincere appreciation to Wanda’s Restaurant, Valarie Singleton, and all of the ladies and gentlemen who baked goods, purchased baked goods and supported us during our Holiday Bake Sale. You know we could not have done it without all of you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We can all be grateful for living in the Town of Livonia, Community Support & Spirit is great. Thank you!
Thank you, Tammy! Thank you to Tammy at Gourmet Goodies in Victor for always welcoming me and my little ones with a big smile when we swing by after school for a croissant! When we stopped in for our Christmas cookies, you even had a present for my toddler. He is still talking to everyone about the trucks Tammy gave him! We can’t wait to stop by the new location this spring, but we will miss you until then!
Memories I thought of this year, 2021,a lot; the loss of people you love that are not here, and the appreciation of others who are here. – The Mother
The best present Instead of spending all your time running around, looking for the toy your child wants, why not give them the best present ever: your time? With all the problems out in the world today such as the shortages of supplies, Covid-19 and its mutations, and all of the environmental disasters, we could better use this time to remember what the season is all about and put Christ back into Christmas. Road work Again, [local road] is closed in the same location by the same dip with no word when--if ever--it will be repaired. Why am I paying taxes in this town? It has been 35+ years that I have been here. I curse the day that I bought this property. It seems like the only solution is to move out of [local town] and New York State. Death of a senator The death of former Senator from Kansas, Robert Dole, was a sad day for the United States. It’s a shame that all politicians aren’t like Senator Dole in that he loved his country and put it ahead of his political party. He knew how to work together with his opponents to come up with a solution that would best serve the country as a whole. It may be too late for most of us to say thank you to him, but all politicians can still say thanks by following his lead in putting the welfare of our country ahead of their political party. Drink, Drive & Toss I’m so disgusted with my neighbors or the users of my rural, partially-seasonal and dead-end road. As I walk my dogs and constantly pick up your garbage, “the beer can bandit” and “the tea tosser,” among others, are weekly and randomly tossing beer cans, tea containers, and other containers out of their vehicles’ windows. They apparently continue to drink and toss while driving down this road. It is so disheartening that these selfish people have no regard for the environment or for others.

Local Byron-Bergen Chapter Attends 94th National FFA Convention BY AMANDA DEDIE
F
ive students from Byron-Bergen High School (BBHS) had the opportunity to travel to Indianapolis, Indiana for the 94th National Future Farmers of America Association (FFA) Convention & Expo. Rachel Best, Maddie Pimm, Alex Schuck, Gracie Erin and Brendan Pimm joined students from over seven FFA chapters across New York state for the trip. FFA is a youth organization for students who are interested in agriculture and leadership. Through agricultural-based, hands-on educational experiences, members develop the tools and leadership skills that translate into real-world personal and professional successes. This year, the event was held from October 27-30 and over 56,000 members attended. There are many activities at the convention, including an agriculture-focused career and college fair, judging of national finalists for various career and leadership development events, inauguration of the following year’s FFA officers, and presentation of FFA degrees to new recipients. “My favorite part was the sessions,” said Pimm, a senior at BBHS. “A lot of the FFA members would go up and talk about how FFA has impacted their life and it was really eye-opening.” Rachel Best, a BBHS senior, originally learned of FFA when attending animal science camps at Genesee Valley BOCES and had no idea it would lead to her not only meeting people from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, but being asked to serve as a New York State delegate at the convention.

have even wanted to talk to you. Now, I don’t stop talking.” “One of the major portions of FFA is that we’re getting agriculture leaders,” said Jeff Parnapy, FFA advisor and agriscience and FACS instructor at BBHS. “Maybe you are a shepherd, and you own these sheep, but you’re going to have to be that leader who has to speak up to your industry. Maybe it means becoming a member and a leader with your local farm bureau, or maybe you need to advise your legislators.” Parnapy’s FFA involvement allowed him to qualify for and receive a $1,500 scholarship grant from the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) to use toward a CASE food science course in the summer of 2022 which will benefit BBHS’s agriscience program. The scholarship was sponsored by Farm Credit East. While in Indiana, students were also able to visit the Cleveland Museum of Science and tour Fair Oaks Farms. The trip was organized by the NYS FFA alumni and supporters. The National FFA Convention & Expo is held annually, and registration is open to all FFA members. In 2022, the event will take place from October 26-29 at the same location. Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:

“It was really cool to get that experience, to work with the state officers and do the business portion of FFA,” said Best. “I never realized how big of a necessity agriculture is and I think without FFA I never would have learned,” continued Best. “We’re not just cows and plows, we’re a big leadership organization. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Bipolar Disease Takes 4 Different Forms ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible for a person to reach the age of 70 and just now be diagnosed with bipolar disorder? Are there degrees of impairment, like with autism -- some worse than others? -- C.S. ANSWER: The hallmark of bipolar disease is mania. “Mania” has a specific meaning in psychiatry: It’s a very elevated mood, associated with high amounts of energy and an inability to think clearly, especially to see the consequences of one’s actions. Some common features of people in a manic episode include an inflated sense of self-worth, distractibility and racing ideas. People can be very talkative and feel little need to sleep. Dangerously, people in a manic phase can spend large amounts of money and have many sexual indiscretions. All diseases have a spectrum of severity, and some are quite wide. With bipolar disease in particular, however, there are four distinct forms of the disease. Bipolar I is the classic form, once called “manic depressive illness,” where people have episodes of mania, alternating with periods of normal behavior or depression. People with Bipolar II have depressive episodes and some “hypomanic” episodes: periods of high energy (and sometimes profound productivity), usually without the negative aspects of the “full” manic episode. Cyclothymia is a rapid cycling between hypomania and mild depression. There is a fourth type, “unspecified,” where people have abnormal mood elevations but don’t meet criteria for the other types. Bipolar disease usually has its onset in early adulthood, but sometimes in teens or even childhood. However, I have rarely seen bipolar disease diagnosed in someone as old as 70. It isn’t always clear whether the disease is just manifesting that late, or whether it has been around for many years, but compensated for by the person. Some people don’t interact with a lot of family or friends, and manic or hypomanic episodes might be missed. It’s possible the 70-year-old in question has a quite mild form. Treatment for bipolar disorder can dramatically improve the quality of life of the person and of the family and friends affected by the illness. ***

COSTLY EMERGENCY DENTAL VISITS ARE EASILY PREVENTABLE Hospital emergency room dental visits and treatment of preventable dental conditions are estimated at billions of dollars annually. They account for a significant number of emergency department visits. Patients who seek emergency treatment for dental conditions usually are treated with quick fixes and pain medications, leaving essential dental repair to the patient’s dentist. However, quick-fix and last resort treatments do not address underlying conditions and are an inefficient treatments for avoidable future dental care issues. When factoring in all-over health, it is important to understand the difference between treating “the symptom” versus focusing on “the cause.” Regular dental check-ups ensure patients receive the dental care necessary to maintain proper oral and overall health and prevent unnecessary and costly emergency care.
It’s so much easier to prevent a dental tragedy than have to treat it when it turns serious. Place your oral health in our capable hands at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. We’ll work together as a team with you to achieve the long-term benefits that quality dentistry affords. You can trust us to help you keep on top of a healthy dental profile that will serve you well into your future. School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE Increase workouts gradually. It can be daunting to think about greatly improving your endurance levels. But taking a gradual, incremental approach to improving endurance is both safe and effective. Also, when engaged, mentally divide the workout into smaller chunks of time. This way you have several smaller goals to accomplish, rather than one large goal. This can make it easier to digest a tough workout. Page 15

DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Start small when picking resolutions. Rather than resolving to lose 50 pounds, start with a more manageable goal, such as losing 10 pounds. When you reach the goal, you will feel more confident and then you can up the ante.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In March 1980, multiple female students at Southern California universities complained that someone had surreptitiously painted their toenails while they studied in the library. The perp, dubbed “Leonardo da Toenail,” was caught but released, since police hadn’t discovered him in the act. Apprehended again a year later, he was ordered to a hearing at the city attorney’s office but didn’t show up and was never seen again. * Academically gifted actress Sharon Stone skipped both kindergarten and first grade, entering second grade at age 5. * At least six ravens are kept at the Tower of London at all times, due to an old superstition that says: “If the ravens leave the Tower, the Kingdom will fall.” The birds even have part of a wing clipped so if they do decide to fly around, they won’t get very far. TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success.

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING

585-235-3500 Look for a new job or fresh income streams. A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income.

Dog Balks at Wheelchair
* Generally, for every degree you lower your thermostat during heating season, you reduce your energy costs by 3%. * Just in time for soup season (and my new year’s resolutions), here’s a great fat swap: Drain and rinse 2 cups of white beans and puree with a cup of no-sodium vegetable broth. You can use this as a thickener in place of heavy cream for soups and stews. -- JoAnn * To keep snow off your windshield, use a flannel-backed tablecloth stretched to cover both windshield and wipers. Put it flannel-side to the glass. Then you’ll be able to lift it (and the snow) off your windshield to drive. * Wondering what winter fruits and vegetables are in season? Here’s a sampling: apples, dates and pears, as well as citrus, like grapefruit, oranges and tangerines. For vegetables, consider endive, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, kale, leeks, mushrooms, parsnips, radicchio, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, turnips, yams and winter squash. * “Want to keep your pants from creasing on the hanger? Grab an empty paper-towel tube and slit it down the side. When you slip it over the bottom of the hanger, it creates a wide curve for the pants to lie across, and no more crease!” -- M.U. in Colorado * Remember that as temperatures drop and layers of clothing increase, children in a car seat need special consideration. Remove heavy coats before strapping in a small child or baby. Winter wear can compress during an accident, and it interferes with the straps.

DEAR CLAUDE: You’ll need to try a couple of things: check the fit of the harness, and use some gentle encouragement (ahem, treats) to help Mitzi. According to Eddie’s Wheels, which designs wheelchairs and support devices for pets, dogs that still have feeling or some mobility in their hind legs sometimes have more trouble adjusting to wheelchairs than dogs whose hind legs are paralyzed. Also, a poorly fitted wheelchair can cause a dog to feel uncomfortable in the harness. So, check the fit of the wheelchair based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. If Mitzi’s wheelie allows her back legs to touch the ground, make sure that she can do so. This may alleviate her anxiety. If her back seems hunched, make sure the straps are at the correct length so she’s comfortable. If her back sags in the harness, she may need more support. And make sure her backside isn’t lifted into the air; this can cause strain on her front legs. Once the fit is OK, give Mitzi lots of encouragement as you help her into the harness each day. Then, as she progresses, give her a reward at each step: when she first stands up in the harness, when she takes her first step, and so on. Always make it a positive experience, until she gets the hang of her new wheels. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 9-yearold Shih Tzu “Mitzi” developed a hip problem due to an injury she suffered when much younger (she was a rescue). It’s become almost impossible for her to walk, and her veterinarian recommended she start using a “wheelie” harness to get around. The problem: Mitzi will not use the harness. It’s a struggle to get her into it, and then she just kind of lays there and whimpers once she’s in it. How can I get her to adjust to the harness? -- Claude C., Atlanta

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Looking Out for No. 1
Depending on where you live, you might be required to delay surgery because the hospital is full of COVID patients. That’s the news that’s spreading around the country. It gets worse. If you have an emergency, the ambulance might be a long time in coming because they don’t have enough EMTs, or they might have to come from an adjacent town. Once you get to the hospital, you might be treated in a hallway because no exam rooms are open. The biggest issues to keep us from needing medical attention are physical safety and health. I’ve gone around my house to look at every inch of floor space to be sure there’s nothing that I could possibly trip on. I moved the laundry basket to the closet instead of leaving it near a path where I walk. In the living room I changed one frequently used lamp from a 50-75-100 watt bulb to one that brightens things up with 75-100-150 watts. I removed two small throw rugs ... just got rid of them. Other things might seem small, but really aren’t. I found a balance class on YouTube and I’m following along every other day. I also found several videos on improving flexibility and stretching. When it comes to diet, I made a quick call to my doctor’s office and inquired about vitamins. I was told that a low-dose vitamin C would be appropriate three times a week, and to add an orange to my diet the other days. Ask your doctor before you do this. As much as I hate not being able to select my own items, I’ve gone back to picking up grocery orders at curbside to stay out of stores. It’s up to us to take care of ourselves. That’s the bottom line when it comes to our health and safety. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Make your goals public. By publicly declaring your intention to improve your life, you’re putting some positive pressure on yourself to fully commit to your goal. Friends and loved ones can be great sources of support, and once they’re aware of your efforts, you likely won’t want to let them down. Once you have decided on a resolution, post your short-term and long-term goals to your Facebook page or let your immediate family and closest friends know of your goals in person. Their encouragement can help you stay on track, and they may even offer to help you realize your goals.

Jim Riechel December 28, 2021
Richard R. Webster December 19, 2021
Jim Riechel of LeRoy, N.Y. passed away on December 28, 2021. Jim was born in Canandaigua on September 5, 1976.
Richard T. Webster, a life-long resident of LeRoy, died unexpectedly on December 19, 2021.
He is predeceased by his parents, Donald Riechel, Sharon Cook, and sister, Gina.
Rick was born July 15, 1963 in Batavia. He married Mary Ellen (Anderson) December 2, 1995. They enjoyed 26 years of adventures and companionship. Rick received an Associate’s Degree in Criminology and a BS in Fishery Science Management. He worked in a variety of settings including landscaping, Genesee Brewery, Genesee Country Museum, SUNY at Geneseo, The Jewish Home of Rochester, and Tully’s in Batavia. Rick is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen and his adored son, Elijah Michael; his sister, Barbara Webster and her partner, Dan Hill; niece, Caroline Webster-Hill; his loving family, and his faithful dogs, Schultz and Casey.
He is survived by his loving wife, Christine; his stepson, Jonathon Perkins; brother, Greg Grann; Stepfather, Frank Schubmehl; Motherin-law, Carolyn Perkins (Mama); Brother-In-law, David (Michaela) Perkins; several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Jim loved playing his guitars and singing all kinds of music. He touched many lives and leaves behind many friends and loving family members. Friends and Family are invited to a remembrance and Celebration of Life on January 8, 2022 from 2-4 PM at 6910 Britt Road, LeRoy, NY. To share a memory or leave a condolence please visit stephenson-doughertyfuneralhome.com
Rick was an avid outdoorsman and loved his flower gardens. He enjoyed hunting, especially with Eli. Food was a way of connection for Rick. He was a creative and accomplished cook and baker and always generously shared his gifts with others. Both Eli and Caroline have benefited from Rick’s cooking expertise. Most recently, he had been an excellent caregiver of Mary Ellen as she is facing medical issues. Rick was a very creative person and he recently taught himself to sew, completing a king-size quilt in 18 days. His artistic touch is present throughout his home and he enjoyed introducing Eli to untold unique artistic activities. Rick had a keen sense of humor that he has passed on to his son. Rick was always happy to share his opinion, especially on topics he was passionate about. Of Rick’s countless accomplishments, he was most proud of his son and he was a dedicated, loving husband. Caring for his family was his number one priority. He was Eli’s greatest fan. Whether it was attending baseball, volleyball, trap shooting or musical events he adored watching Eli grow into the talented young man that he is. His complete dedication to Mary Ellen, especially these past four months, has made her recovery possible. Rick was predeceased by his father, Vernon and his mother, Grace. Due to COVID-19 a private service will be held at Cameron, Brady & Stueber Funeral Home in LeRoy, followed by a private burial at Machpelah Cemetery, LeRoy. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Rick’s memory to your favorite charity. To share a memory or leave a condolence please visit leroyfuneralhome.com
“Amusement is the happiness of those who cannot think...” ~ Alexander Pope Although Pope was an English poet who lived during the early 1700s, his thought about amusement is extremely pertinent today, almost three centuries later. In fact, it may well be one of the eternal truths of all times. It is only natural that we like to be amused from time to time, particularly after hard work has earned us a little relief. However, there are too many people for whom being amused is a way of life. If these people would give themselves a chance to think, they might find a far greater satisfaction. We can provide a dignified and comforting funeral service at a price within the means of any family. The decision on price is always made by the family we serve.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
