PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Ticks Plague This Playful Bulldog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t get it. My bulldog “Chester” was out in the yard with me on a cool morning while I raked the first leaves of fall. When he came in, he had four ticks around his neck! They were hungry, too. I pulled the ticks off, but every time he goes outside now, he has one or more ticks burrowing into his fur. I thought cool weather causes ticks and fleas to die off. What’s happening? -- Burt G., Manchester, Vermont DEAR BURT: Believe it or not, tick (and flea) activity can increase in early fall. Temperatures are still warm enough for these pests to thrive, especially under fallen leaves and in high grass. And they’re always hungry, so they’ll latch onto a warm body as soon as they get the opportunity. You’re doing exactly the right thing to combat ticks. As soon as Chester comes inside, you’re checking his coat for ticks and removing them as soon as you see them. And you’re raking the leaves in the yard regularly so that they don’t build up. Here’s a few more things you can do that may reduce the number of ticks in your yard: -- Keep the grass mowed right up until the first hard frost. -- Cut back tall grasses and underbrush on your property. -- Move woodpiles away from the house. -- Don’t let Chester roll in the leaf piles, and block his access to untamed areas of brush or tall grasses. -- Use a flea-and-tick- prevention collar or treatment on Chester. Talk to his veterinarian about the best product to use. -- If heavy tick infestation doesn’t abate, consider treating your yard with a flea-and-tick spray made for this purpose. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 16, 1946, at Nuremberg, Germany, 10 high-ranking Nazi officials are executed by hanging for their crimes during World War II after they were found guilty by the International War Crimes Tribunal.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Update window treatments to compensate for dropping temperatures. Trade your sheers for sturdy, draft-blocking panels. * To easily get keys on a keychain, use a staple remover to create an opening to slip the keys on. It is very effective and will keep you from getting frustrated. * When hammering a nail, try this save-your-finger trick: Use a clothespin to hold the nail steady, and then use your hammer to drive it in. Hammering into the wall? Push the nail through a strip of cardboard, and then hold the cardboard over the right spot. No more banged-up fingers or thumbs! * “At a party, someone spilled a cup of red wine on one of my throw pillows. I love the pillow, since it is just the right size and really soft, but I could not get the stain out. So I covered it with a new fabric. I ended up doing all the assorted pillows in the same fabric, and it made a big change in the room. I wish I had done it sooner.” -- I.F. in Pennsylvania * Bringing some plants indoors? Use styrofoam packing peanuts in the bottom of pots when planting. They aren’t as heavy as rocks, but they do just as good a job. It makes the pots easier to move around should you need to. * “For easy-cleanup pancakes, use a turkey baster to ‘squirt’ the batter in the griddle or skillet. No drips, and it usually results in a pretty good circle, too!” -- A.J. in Florida

HOW TO SAFELY NAVIGATE WET ROADS Resist the urge to brake quickly. When drivers feel themselves losing control, many respond by braking quickly. But hard braking and quick turns can increase the risk that a vehicle will hydroplane. And even if the vehicle does not hydroplane, motorists may have a hard time controlling it when slamming on the brakes. When encountering wet roads, brake slowly and maintain low speeds until the roads dry off.

REDUCE DISTRACTIONS BEHIND THE WHEEL Geico indicates that studies have shown people are limited in the amount of information they can process at any one time. Driving requires focus and an ability to react to a host of potential circumstances. Distractions compromise drivers’ ability to focus. Reducing distractions can considerably cut down on the number of motor vehicle accidents each year.
INDICATORS IT’S TIME TO CHANGE AIR FILTERS Vehicle maintenance can protect drivers’ investments and help their automobiles run efficiently. One area drivers should pay particular attention to is their vehicles’ air filters. When operating at optimal capacity, an air filter improves fuel efficiency while ensuring vehicles accelerate smoothly without taxing the engine. But when air filters are clogged, fuel efficiency is reduced and emissions are increased, a 1-2 punch that costs motorists money and hurts the planet at the same time. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals to determine the recommended intervals to replace air filters, but the following are a handful of indicators that suggest it’s time to change them. Gas mileage: Unless you just purchased your vehicle, you likely know how many miles you can drive on a full tank of gas. If that gas mileage is suddenly slipping and you find yourself visiting the filling station more frequently, then it might be time to replace your air filter. Engine light: Drivers may be alerted to engine issues when the “Check engine” lights up on the vehicle’s dashboard. This light may come on to indicate a problem with the air filter, as clogged air filters reduce air flow to the engine, resulting in an imbalanced air-fuel mixture that adversely affects the engine. Starting and idling problems: Vehicles sometimes don’t start up as smoothly as they once did, and drivers may also notice vehicles are not idling smoothly. These symptoms may indicate misfiring spark plugs that are being polluted (and made less effective) by a dirty air filter that is reducing the flow of air to the engine. Acceleration difficulties: Automobiles that are operating at peak capacity accelerate quickly. But dirty, worn out air filters adversely affect acceleration. Drivers who notice that their cars are struggling to accelerate when stoplights turn green or on highways may need to replace their vehicles’ air filters. Dirty air filter: Perhaps the biggest indicator that an air filter needs to be replaced is the filter itself. If you cannot find the air filter on your own, consult your vehicle owner’s manual to determine where it is. Once you find the air filter, examine it in broad daylight. Clean air filters are white, so if the filter has darkened, it may need to be replaced.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Mammography is the most common screening test for breast cancer. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. This test may find tumors that are too small to feel. A mammogram may also find ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). In DCIS, there are abnormal cells in the lining of a breast duct, which may become invasive cancer in some women. Mammograms are less likely to find breast tumors in women younger than 50 years than in older women. This may be because younger women have denser breast tissue that appears white on a mammogram. Because tumors also appear white on a mammogram, they can be harder to find when there is dense breast tissue. The following may affect whether a mammogram is able to detect (find) breast cancer: • The size of the tumor. • How dense the breast tissue is. • The skill of the radiologist. Women aged 40 to 74 years who have screening mammograms have a lower chance of dying from breast cancer than women who do not have screening mammograms.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Do We Really Need a Booster Shot?
Depending on when we went for the COVID vaccine, we could be eligible for the booster now ... or not. Elderly seniors, as well as those in nursing homes and the immunocompromised, were first in line early in the year. The rest of us straggled in over the next several months. At this point, it’s unknown whether there should be a six- or eight-month wait before the booster. The Pfizer booster (called Comirnaty) is now available to those 65 and older and some others depending on risk and medical conditions. At this writing, Moderna is asking for authorization, and there is no booster yet for the J&J vaccine. Do we actually need a booster? We’re all wondering (my pharmacist says half of their calls are about boosters), and the answers are a mixed bag. A pulmonary physician at a major university hospital said if we’re under 65 and relatively healthy, no, we don’t need one. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says that the vaccines we already received will start to wear off, so yes, we should get the booster, starting with seniors and nursing-home residents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is calling for booster shots only for the immunocompromised, but not others. The World Health Organization is calling for a moratorium on shots until poor countries get theirs. While we wait for real answers, keep your vaccine record card where you can find it. You’ll need it, should you decide to get a booster. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOMETOWN
“Apologies are seldom of any use…≥” ~ Samuel Johnson Considerate people are often aware that something they may have done or said might have been offensive to somebody. Even though the incident was unintentional, as is usually the case, there is a natural tendency to explain…to apologize and make things right. When we apologize to a friend, they are already aware that our intentions were good. They need no apology. And, our enemies will not usually be placated by apology. A simple “I’m sorry” is as much apology as is ever needed, if there is any need at all. Our staff is always available to assist, whether with advice and counsel on pre-planning or with making arrangements at time of need. Feel free to call us at any hour.

It’s easy to talk about saving for a home or retirement, but it’s not so simple to discuss who will care for your children should you die while they are still minors. Those who are not able to sort through these answers on their own should enlist the help of an attorney or a financial adviser, both of whom can take some of the emotion out of the discussion and put it in more practical terms.

ABC tries to provide the best opportunities website, its board of directors and their network, area print and for families to prepare for parenthood so that every child is social media, and local events. Unsurprisingly, word-of-mouth born into a loving environment. ABC often helps financially as has played an important role in raising awareness as well. ABC well as with supplies, education, clothing, Christian counseling, runs on donations, both money and items such as clothing, and much more. Some of its volunteers are also mentors who food, housing, etc. continue to support and assist area families. Over eighty-six vendors, spiritual families. crafters, artists, artisans, and others are scheduled to attend. harity, in its true definition is the practice of “benevolent goodwill towards or love of humanity,” according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. As a society and community, we could learn so much from just these few words. However, humans always seek proof, and perhaps one piece of evidence supporting the practice of charity and helping those in need is All Babies Cherished (ABC). All Babies Cherished is located in Batavia. It is a Christian-based, non-profit, community service organization that helps families prepare for their newborn child(ren) and also supports their current family.
The agency has been active within the Batavia community for twenty-five years. In fact, the organization reached its twentyfifth year this year and will celebrate its silver anniversary in upcoming weeks. According to Ms. Lucille DiSanto, a volunteer with the agency, ABC started “to help draw families to abortion alternatives,” whether that means helping them during the pregnancy and/or adoption. All Babies Cherished “does not discriminate against clients based on race, national origin, religion, age, marital status, or place of residence.” It strives to be a safe, secure, and non-judgmental place for families who seek support, not only regarding their children but also in other aspects of their lives. In addition to s u p p o r t i n g expecting mothers, ABC Volunteers are happy to support area families! ABC also offers child-rearing classes. It helps with housing, especially of people experiencing homelessness, whether that means finding a shelter, securing a rental, or helping those trying to buy their first house. In addition, ABC offers classes on several topics from budgeting to Bible study. It also help families with things like food and doctor’s appointments.

There will also be music, food trucks, games for the children, and a visit from Santa Claus from 11AM to 1PM. The local fire department will demonstrate car seat safety, as well. One of the parents supported by ABC shares his thoughts on the agency and how it helped him get back on track. “All Babies Cherished is the best thing to me and my son,” he said. “They help with so many things and help me learn to be a better parent and give me tips and pointers. The entire staff here is nothing but great and help with anything you need if they can provide it. The Earn While You Learn program is awesome. It allows me to get baby supplies and more as I get taught stuff I never knew. This has made a significant difference on me as a father. HOMETOWN PHOTOS Zero, not here untrue You need to get your facts straight! Even if you are vaccinated, you can still carry and transmit Covid! You can still get Covid!! And yes, I’m vaccinated by my choice! I was recently in the ER. The nurse that took care of me was overworked, wonderful, and caring and had had Covid twice. What better immunity than your own body’s? It’s much better than any shot made by mankind. The problem is this virus keeps mutating, and no vaccine is going to keep you 100% safe from it. I’m a retired nurse, and I do understand what this means. So, it should remain a choice, not a mandate. Health care professionals continue to use PPE. You will not be cared for by anyone who is unprotected. Know what you are talking about before you attack an already taxed system. Also, if you are out in public, how do you know the person standing next to you is vaccinated?
S E V A R Yes, kindness matters I have experienced something similar while at a local park with my two granddaughters, ages 7 and 3. They wanted only to make new friends but were ignored and laughed at. It broke my heart when they cried, but I couldn’t blame the children involved. They’re only children. Rest assured, your granddaughter will make good friends at school and completely forget about this unfortunate incident. Still, I know it’s something that will tug at our heart strings for some time.
Give a poor man a bone Thanks to the kind lady with a dog named Tucker who gave me a ride home when my bike got a flat. Those two miles would have gotten the best of me.
Great customer service I’ve been to a lot of landscaping and garden centers, but Wayside in Macedon was by far the most helpful for a first-time gardener like myself. Jen was extremely knowledgeable but not at all overwhelming. I’m very excited to see my gardens in the springtime! Thanks again!
No profanity I fully support any citizen’s right to put a sign supporting their candidate of choice on their lawn or house, or to fly a flag showing what side of the political fence they sit. I don’t care who those signs support. Each one represents your personal opinion; it’s encouraging to see so many taking part in the democratic process. Few signs however have no place in public view in our town. One in particular does not support but rather denigrates an elected leader by means of the most obnoxious 4-letter word. Do you not realize that children may walk by on their way to school or the bus? Or out-of-towners who may drive by and think “what kind of community is this?” What about the public’s right to enjoy their town without being verbally insulted? So to residents who feel it necessary to display their opinions in such vulgar terms, I politely ask you to take them down. Show that you care more about healing our community than dividing it. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Hero to zero? You have no right to judge anyone. There is a wide variety of reasons for refusing the [vaccine],and none of them are your business! You aren’t questioning why the healthcare professionals are refusing this? [Stay home!] I sure hope you or a loved one wont need any of those “zeroes “ you mention because the worst healthcare crisis in any of our lifetimes is headed our way.
Pay it forward Thank you to the kind person who bought our coffee at the drive thru last week. Little acts like these make someone’s day!

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * New Yorkers went through a bizarre phase of wearing chameleons as living ornaments in 1894. They were fastened to cushions, scarves and women’s bodices with tiny chains and collars as little “jeweled playthings,” but thankfully the trend was shut down by the SPCA, which banned their sale -- though not until over 10,000 of the creatures were already running loose in the city.

I step outside and the chilly air tightens the skin on my bare arms. Summer has ended all too quickly, and some of the leaves on the trees have already started to burn with the colors of fall. Fall colors.... so bright and intense and beautiful. It’s like nature is trying to fill you up with color, to saturate you so you can stockpile it before winter turns everything muted and dreary. ~Siobhan Vivian, Same Difference

Extreme Flatulence Is Noxious, Embarrassing
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

DEAR DR. ROACH: In 2008, I had a partial sigmoid colectomy. Since then, I have had no recurrence of diverticulitis. The surgeon recommended that I not use laxatives, but rather take fiber gummies to keep things moving easily in addition to drinking lots of fluids. I am doing that, but my flatulence could power all the homes in a small city. It is difficult to control outbursts, which are noxious and embarrassing in the extreme. Is there any other way to avoid hard stools, straining and other unhealthy gastrointestinal situations? -- J.S. ANSWER: I am sorry for your embarrassment, but I agree with the surgeon that getting fiber and plenty of water is the safest and best way to prevent problems. However, maybe it isn’t just the fiber, but your diet that is at least partially responsible for the increased gas. You could try reducing your intake of foods in the cabbage family, onions, beans, corn and other gas-producers. Avoid carbonated beverages and any beverage containing artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol or xylitol. In some people, changing the bacteria that live in your gut (your microbiome) through probiotic supplements and a change of diet can reduce the amount of gas produced. There are other types of fiber supplements besides fiber gummies that might be better tolerated, or you can get fiber from food. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
DAY OR NIGHT GRINDING Bruxism is the medical term for grinding, gnashing, or clenching teeth. Those with bruxism unconsciously clench or grind their teeth when awake and/or during sleep. Mild bruxism may not require treatment. However, in some patients, bruxism can be frequent and severe, leading to jaw disorders, headaches, and tooth damage. Combinations of physical, psychological, and genetic factors, including stress, age, personality type, prescription medications, family history, and disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia, gastro esophageal reflux disorder (GERD), epilepsy, night terrors, sleep-related disorders such as sleep apnea, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are primary causes. Symptoms may include fractured, chipped or loose teeth;
worn enamel; pain or sensitivity; jaw, neck, face, or ear pain; dull headaches; and sleep disruption. Many people grind their teeth throughout the day, making this damaging practice a 24/7 hazard to their oral as well as overall health. Whether you are in our office for bruxism or just for a simple cleaning, our personal, casual, and relaxed style in providing quality dental care will help put you at ease. We’ll take the time to get to know your needs, answer your questions about the latest techniques and materials, and make sure that you are comfortable. Be kind to your teeth—call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for complete family dental care at 585.343.4246. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre.
P.S. Bertrand Frohman, MD, coined the term bruxism in 1931 from the Greek expression “brychien odontas,” translating literally as “grinding of the teeth.”

Most self-detected lumps that turn out to be breast cancer are found during normal routines such as showering or getting dressed, not during monthly breast self-exams. About 80% of breast cancers not discovered by mammography are discovered by women themselves. Knowing the landscape of your body and noticing slight changes is always wise. Becoming familiar with one’s breasts can help detect breast cancers that mammograms may miss. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

GARDENING IN AUTUMN Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully.
Cold Weather is Coming Soon! Make sure to get your furnace cleaned & checked We are now an Amana dealer along with our Goodman High Efficiency Furnaces and Air-Temp.
A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.
