STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A common issue with blood donation -- along with other types of charitable contributions -- is that if donors don’t know the recipient, it’s harder to convince them that donating is beneficial. Therefore, in an effort to encourage more young people to give blood, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, sends a text when their donation has been dispensed to someone in need, providing proof that it’s going to good use.

Professional Pet Sitter Is Teen’s Dream Job DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column about a pet sitter who had to deal with a sick cat. Even though it was a scary story, I still want to be a professional pet sitter. I’m still in high school, but this is a dream job for me. How do I get started? Do I need to be certified by a national organization? -- Sarah, Blue Ridge, Georgia DEAR SARAH: Pet sitting can be a rewarding career, especially if you do the groundwork needed to really succeed at it. You don’t need a certificate from an organization like the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters, but having a certificate helps prospective clients feel more confident that you know your job and take it seriously. Here’s a few steps to take before starting a pet sitting business. -- Talk to your parents about what you want to do. Because you’re under 18, it’s important to involve them in this decision. -- Do some trial pet-sitting. With your parents’ permission and supervision, pet sit for family friends or relatives. You’ll get valuable experience and learn if you really like doing this. -- Join pet sitting groups on social media. You can glean lots of useful advice from experienced pet sitters. -- Learn about starting and running a small business. If your high school doesn’t offer a class or a club, sign up at a nearby community college. -- Contact the Small Business Association (SBA.gov). They offer free counseling services to help you get a small business off the ground. -- Check out some major pet sitting organizations online. The NAPPS (https://petsitters.org) in the U.S. and Pet Sitters International (https://www.petsit.com/) have lots of information and advice on running a great pet-sitting business. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? A 2017 study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention found that about one-third of women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in the United States live at least five years after diagnosis. Also known as stage IV breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer is the most advanced stage of the disease. Metastatic breast cancer refers to breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other parts of the body. Patients diagnosed with breast cancer also should know that improved treatments may further their chances of surviving a diagnosis, even a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. In fact, the American Cancer Society notes that survival rates are based on women who were diagnosed and treated at least five years earlier. In the time since those survival rates were documented, treatments could have advanced even further, potentially improving the five-year survival rates for metastatic breast cancer.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Visibility is key in hazardous weather conditions, and keeping the windshield clean is a priority. This means ensuring there is enough windshield wiper fluid in the car and that it is a product that will not freeze. Wiper blades can freeze and crack in the winter. Older blades may be more susceptible to damage. It’s a worthy investment to replace existing wiper blades at the start of each winter. When vehicles are parked, pull the wipers off of the windshield to safeguard them from sticking and cracking.

Leaving An Estate To Charity One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed. When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.

Shoppers looking for antique signs also can purchase reproductions. There are many retailers that produce very good likenesses that may be considerably more affordable than the originals. You also can commission an artist to reproduce signage that fits with your design plans. Some research online or a query of artists in your community may yield prospects who can produce the sign you covet.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING

BUILDING IS BEING SOLD!

Screening is looking for cancer before a person has any symptoms. This can help find cancer at an early stage. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat. By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread. Scientists are trying to better understand which people are more likely to get certain types of cancer. They also study the things we do and the things around us to see if they cause cancer. This information helps doctors recommend who should be screened for cancer, which screening tests should be used, and how often the tests should be done. It is important to remember that your doctor does not necessarily think you have cancer if he or she suggests a screening test. Screening tests are given when you have no cancer symptoms. If a screening test result is abnormal, you may need to have more tests done to find out if you have cancer. These are called diagnostic tests.

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Lupus Foundation of America, 90 percent of people living with lupus are women. Most women who develop lupus do so between the ages of 15 and 44. Lupus is an autoimmune disease, which means that it causes the immune system to attack healthy cells and tissues by mistake. The LFA reports that one-third of lupus patients suffer from multiple autoimmune diseases. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

* “If you heat a pita in the microwave first, it will be easier to open and will rip less. About 10 seconds should do it.” -- M.E. in Georgia * Baby have diaper rash? One of the best remedies is “air time” -- that is, letting baby go without a diaper for a bit. Another simple soother is a baking soda bath. Try adding 2-4 tablespoons of baking soda to Junior’s bathwater. * Use this tip to vacuum seal your meat for the freezer without any special equipment! Add meat pieces to a plastic, zipper-top bag. Fill a large pot several inches deep with water. Seal all but an inch or so of the bag. As you lower the bag into the water (zipper top up) the air will escape through the unsealed portion. When no air remains, seal the bag and then remove from the water. * “Have you tried this single-serving blender hack using a mason jar? Many standard-size blender blades can be screwed on to a pint Mason jar. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you can make single servings of smoothies to blend and go.” -- T.U. in South Carolina * “Apply petroleum jelly to the panes of your windows before painting the trim. This works better than masking tape in many ways. It is easily removed, and even large paint flecks come right off.” -- P.S. in Illinois * After you’ve cooked your chicken whole, remove the meat and throw the bones and remaining carcass in the slow cooker with 3-4 cups of water. Let it cook on low for several hours for a spectacularly flavorful broth.

CURE!!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Your fungal toenails before SUMMER 2022

Help With Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is acupuncture a possible therapy to relieve back pain and stiffness associated with Parkinson’s disease? -- R.G. ANSWER: There have been many trials that show acupuncture is superior to no treatment for various symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. This is true especially for fatigue, but also in a composite score that includes stiffness. A systematic review of published studies found that “acupuncture has significant positive effects.” Other studies have shown that sham acupuncture, where random areas of the body were needled, was also effective in treating symptoms. This has led some skeptical authors to conclude that acupuncture is a placebo effect: The treatment convinces people that they are getting better, so they do feel better. However, if acupuncture were completely harmless and improved symptoms, I would recommend it to people who were interested. Acupuncture is mostly, but not entirely, harmless. Adverse events are not common with acupuncture, but they do happen. Minor adverse effects happen in about 9% of cases. Serious adverse events such as pneumothorax (sometimes called a collapsed lung) and nerve damage are occasionally reported. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? • Now’s the time to get treatment. If left untreated, fungal toenails can: affect your immune system, cause recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance! • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation and numbness to their feet can develop more serious problems. • There are also safer new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one-a-day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2022. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

CANKER SORES, MOUTH ULCERS AND OTHER PAINS IN THE MOUTH Mouth ulcers, commonly known as canker sores, are small, painful red or yellowish sores that develop on the inner tissues of lips, cheeks, tongue and gums. Most common in women and those under 45, these painful blister-like sores may be a sign of other health issues. Minor sores vary in size and usually clear up within two weeks. Major ulcers, larger and deeper, take longer to heal and can lead to scarring. The primary causes of mouth ulcers include stress; lack of sleep; minor mouth injuries; hormonal changes; food sensitivities; nutrient deficiencies; medications; gastrointestinal tract issues; and bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. A dental professional can determine the cause and prescribe a relief regimen.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our goal is to assist our patients in overcoming the many assaults that can damage a healthy mouth. Our weapons against these dangers include a frank discussion of cause and effect, up-to-date procedures, and the latest in techniques and equipment, a friendly, positive outlook, and a true desire to see our patients achieve the smile they desire and deserve. For comprehensive dental care for all members of your family, please call 585.343.4246. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre, where you will have a positive experience!

P. S. “Aphthous ulcers,” (mouth ulcers or canker sores) are aptly named. In Greek, aphthae (root of aphthous) means “to set on fire.”

Around and around the house the leaves fall thick—but never fast, for they come circling down with a dead lightness that is sombre and slow. Let the gardener sweep and sweep the turf as he will, and press the leaves into full barrows, and wheel them off, still they lie ankle-deep. ~Charles Dickens, Bleak House

Elections decide the leadership that guides legislation and enforcement of regulations. The right to vote is something many people take for granted, but elsew here in the w orld many people have no say w ith regard to their political leaders, w hich only emphasizes the importance of partic ipating in the elec tion process w henever you’re afforded the opportunity to do so. The first step to prepare for Election Day is to confirm your eligibility. Age, legal residency and citizenship status are just a few of the factors that may affect your eligibility to vote. County clerks, municipal offices as w ell as the Division of M otor Vehicles should have voter registration forms, and additional information is available online. Voter registration may have to be filed several weeks to a month in advance of Election Day in order for you to be eligible. In the United States, when voter eligibility is in question at the time of an election, a person typically may cast a provisional vote, which will then be considered after other ballots are counted. Once your eligibility has been verified, it is important to know the dates of key elections. Local new spapers often print schedules and this information can be found online as w ell. Various local and federal elections occur each year, and November is when national elections take place in the United States. Before voting, voters should researc h the respec tive candidates for each election. To better understand candidates’ platforms, visit their w ebsites as w ell as those of nonpartisan political organizations, such as The League of Women Voters. Deciding w ho to vote for requires more than just siding w ith a particular political party. Read as muc h as you c an on the candidates’ beliefs, concerns and voter history. This w ill help you make the best decision possible. In the days leading up to Election Day, confirm your polling location and voting options. USA.gov advises that if you need special assistance, contact your local elections office for information, advice, and educational materials about voting equipment and details on access to the polling place, including designated parking. Keep in mind that, in addition to voting for candidates, you may asked to answ er additional questions about issues impacting your local community. These are called ballot measures. A voter guide also may include information about certain issues that w ill require your vote.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

SNOWPLOWING

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Plumbing Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage. Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers. The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes. By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing.

DID YOU KNOW?

Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Retired racing greyhounds may need to be trained, but they’re willing to learn. Sitting, climbing stairs and even playing games can be foreign concepts to retired racing greyhounds. That’s because their training focused on racing and little else. But with time, greyhounds, who typically express a willingness to learn and please their owners, can learn these tasks.

LVMMATERIALS LLC BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ANIMAL TRAINERS Trainers can recognize environmental factors affecting pets that owners may not see. Pet owners may think their homes are pet-friendly or conducive to housebreaking pets. But trainers may see things the untrained eye won’t. Anything from the location of a parrot’s cage to the designated litter box area for a cat can affect pets’ behavior, compromising pets owners’ efforts to housebreak their animals. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Rec Center Almost Opened Again My local recreation center almost opened again. A month ago, the center opened for indoor walking with strict rules. One week later, during a heated board meeting, mostly about masks versus no masks, the rec center supervisor said he was shutting it down for the foreseeable future. Since then there’s been a hue and cry, mostly between the mask police and the anti-mask folks. The center supervisor, ever accommodating but safety minded, declared that there would be certain days for people who wanted masks and days for those who didn’t want to wear masks. Walking on the track, he said, would be the only center activity. “Not fair,” cried those (mostly teen boys) who also wanted basketball, and no, they didn’t want to wear masks. Fine, he replied, there could be oneon-one basketball in three of the center’s courts. But, said others, if teen basketball was allowed, why couldn’t there be adult classes as well? So, the supervisor adjusted the schedule, did measurements on the floor, and outlined space on a basketball court where a no-mask yoga class could be held in the mornings with participants 8 feet apart. You know what happened next, right? The aerobics people wanted a class as well. The spin class wanted space and time (and the bikes). Then those from the still-closed senior center line-dance group wanted to use rec center space. It was right about that time that the supervisor quietly quit. I wasn’t there, but I have it on good authority that he handed the center’s keys to the loudest anti-mask person, saying, “You’re in charge. When the COVID rates go higher in this town, it’s all on you.” The next day, the town changed the locks on the rec center doors. The supervisor, as I heard it, packed a bag and retreated to his cabin in the woods, where he plans to stay until everyone comes to their senses. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Thomas Joseph Spadaro October 9, 2021 LeRoy: Thomas Joseph Spadaro, 74, of Le Roy, NY passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2021. Tom was born on August 24, 1947 to Samuel and Susan (Stoppi) Spadaro in Frackville, Pennsylvania. He moved with his parents as an infant to the town he grew to love, LeRoy, New York. After graduating from LeRoy High School, Tom enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Due to a medical condition, he was honorably discharged early and returned to LeRoy where he married Linda Brown. They had two children, Amy in 1972 and Joseph in 1974. While raising his family, Tom worked for C.P. Ward and Bell Construction. If you are anywhere in the Rochester area, chances are good that you will travel over a bridge or pass by a building that he worked on. He loved to putter in his garage, fixing and painting cars and hosting gatherings with family and friends. As his children grew up, Tom relocated to Orange County, California. He started Southern California Maintenance and grew a successful company that encompassed all of his building talents. While in California, he met his wife, Gina (Wright). They shared a love of country-western music and dancing. Tom proved to be very talented at the two-step and wasn’t shy about showing it off. On Monday, December 15, 1997, Tom called Gina and asked her to marry him. She accepted and they went to City Hall for a romantic ceremony on their lunch break. While Tom was in California, his son Joe became interested in the limousine business. Joe started operations in LeRoy, and Tom used his self-taught craftsmanship to transform bus shells into party buses and ship them back to Joe. Seventeen buses later, Gina had had it with not having any parking space in the driveway or the garage, so Tom took this opportunity to start their relocation to LeRoy, back to the community and family that he loved. Tom and Gina acquired the property on the creek bank where Tom built their beautiful home. Every inch of their house, inside and out, has been touched by Tom’s talented hands.

the Village and bringing them back to life. Tom could walk into a dilapidated, neglected house and have a clear vision of what it could become. He was skilled in all aspects of homebuilding and remodeling and worked tirelessly in the transformation of each project, making LeRoy beautiful one home at a time. If you ever saw Tom’s old yellow truck parked in front of a house, you knew there was hard work and magic going on inside. You knew Tom cared about you if he gave you a nickname. Many friends, family members and co-workers became known by the nickname that Tom had given them. To name a few: Scoob, Chiquita Banana, Schmo, Buddy Boy, Beaner, Boss, Dude, Missified, Cassified, Squirrel, Ron Boy, Lulabell, Mouse, Shermanator, and Beulah. Tom served on the Zoning Board of Appeals for the Village. If he firmly believed in a person’s cause, he fought for them with everything he had. Tom was instrumental in getting the LeRoy Community Pool reopened. He believed that it was the community’s obligation to see that every child had the opportunity to learn how to swim and to have a venue for healthy social interaction. Aside from his family, this accomplishment was Tom’s greatest source of pride. Tom was predeceased by his parents and his first wife. He is survived by his brother, James Spadaro of Bonsall, California; his wife, Gina; his daughter, Amy (Daniel) Vanderhoof; his son, Joseph (Nikki Stone) Spadaro; and five grandchildren, Sydney and Zachary Vanderhoof; Joseph, Dominic and Anthony James (AJ) Spadaro. Services will be held privately by the family. A celebration of life will be held in Tom’s honor this coming Spring at his beloved Community Pool prior to the opening of the next pool season. The date and time will be published at a later date. We will invite all of Tom’s friends and family to join us in celebrating his beautiful life. Any memorial donations can be made to the LeRoy Community Pool in care of Amy Vanderhoof, 8 Garden Lane, LeRoy, NY 14482.

Shirley A. De John October 5, 2021 Shirley A. De John (Gleason, Carris) of Melbourne, Florida, formally of Rochester, New York passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at the age of 86. Born in Rochester, New York to Samuel P. De John and Anna Citro. Shirley moved to Melbourne in 1979 where she resided until November of 2020. The remainder of her time she spent in Eustis, Florida until her passing on October 5, 2021. Shirley worked for Harris/RF Communications in Rochester, New York, then, upon moving to Melbourne, Florida, made the transition over to Real Estate, becoming a Broker/Owner of her own real estate franchise. Shirley retired at the age of 70, enjoying her time with her family and friends. Dancing, tending to her orchids, fishing and being a part of the Moose Club in Melbourne were all part of Shirley’s enjoyment. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Lynne Messana (Mark) of Piffard, New York, Holly Weston of Melbourne, Florida, and Leslie LoVoy (Wayne) of Eustis, Florida; Grandchildren, Stephen Rose, Joseph Messana, Anthony Messana, Victor Messana, Erika Bessell, Robert Weston, and Noah LoVoy; as well as 7 great-grandchildren.

Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

S E V RA The Community Hygiene Bank, now located at Jubilee Christian Church in Brockport, serves members in the Brockport Central School District with needed personal hygiene items, paper goods and cleaning supplies. Thanks to those who organized or put up donation bins in their areas to help collect needed hygiene items for this drive. With your help, we were able to distribute “Personal Blessing Bags” of full-sized, needed items to over 200 families this past summer. We thank you!

Getting vaccinated does not reduce your risk of transmitting Covid. It reduces your risk of becoming severely ill and taking up a coveted bed in the hospital. Unfortunately, the mandate did not allow for those healthcare workers who put their lives on the line, got Covid, are fully recovered, and have natural immunity. Natural immunity has been found to be stronger than vaccinated immunity. Please look this up yourself in studies that have come out of Israel. I believe most of the healthcare workers who chose not to get vaccinated did so because they had Covid and recovered. Some suggest it may cause harmful health effects to be vaccinated when you have already recovered and have natural immunity, especially in younger people. It is all just so sad how divisive this has become, and it shouldn’t be.

To all my angels

Zero not hero unnecessary hostility

Hygiene Bank thanks

Words cannot express just how we feel. Heartfelt thank yous go out to all my angels at Wedgewood Rehab & Nursing Center who literally saved my life on October 13th. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Sue & Tom

Obviously you are not aware a twice “Moderna” vaccinated person can still get Covid-19 AND pass it on to an unsuspecting, unvaccinated person. I am proof positive.Your rancorous vitriol is uncalled for: [pitting] brother against brother and father against son until hostility and animosity drive our lives. What ever happened to “love thy neighbor” and “do unto others?” We are all in these times together. Can we just concentrate on getting along? I affirm my heartfelt thank you to my wonderful, patient, and kind nurses and aides at Noyes hospital, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, you are my heroes. May you always have the courage to stand for your convictions. God Bless Us, Everyone.

Nice surprise What a nice surprise to hear someone in the Sport of Kings restaurant paid for my supper on October 3rd! It was very good, and I sure do appreciate your doing so. I will pass it forward to my 87-year-old Veteran friend. Thank you!

Thank you for holding strong To all the people who are standing strong and holding to their beliefs, thank you! Your beliefs are yours alone, and you are a good person for holding to those beliefs. You are not selfish! You are not bad, and you are not wrong! You are a hero, and you are not alone! To any person who has to choose between their job and their beliefs and chooses their beliefs: you are the kind of person that will save this world, and we need more people like you. I applaud your strength of character and your commitment to your beliefs. If you are struggling right now, please know there are others like you, so don’t be afraid to look around and seek those people out. We know that you stand strong for your beliefs because you do care, not only about yourself but about everyone. If you didn’t care, you would give in and take the easy route, but you have chosen to stand strong and that shows the goodness in your heart and your strength of character. Thank you!

Now firing So the threats to fire employees for not getting something that was never required of them before now is currently being carried out. If these companies want to fire perfectly good employees willing to work, why do those companies hang banners on the fronts of their buildings that say, “Now Hiring?” It would stand to reason if companies need workers, they should not be firing them. Would it not be more accurate for the company to hang a banner that said, “Now Firing?”

Shout out to Brenda & Mary Anne! Both my husband and I went to Walgreen’s to pick up items that we usually get with our health plan. This time, it was a disaster! Mary Anne initially had to void the entire order because some items apparently were not covered by our insurance plan (even though they had been before). Mary Anne kept telling me that it wasn’t my fault. Brenda was helping my husband. She, too, was very understanding. Finally, we got through our large order, even if it was a few items at a time. Even though it was frustrating, I want to thank Mary Anne and Brenda for their patience and kindness. Thanks!

DID YOU KNOW?

Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

GLOW with your Hands Opens Career Doors for Local Students BY ELAHA HASHMATULLAH

C

hildren: they are the future. Guiding them in their interests would not only benefit them, but also our community and our society. Educating them on the many “hands-on” career opportunities out there could interest them and possibly become their desired path in life. This is the goal of GLOW with your Hands. GLOW with your Hands focuses on a mixture of educational, workforce, and business-oriented goals. The word “GLOW” stands for the regions in which this organization operates: Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming. Their mission is to open kids’ eyes to—and get them excited about—different “hands-on” job opportunities that are available in the GLOW region.

One of this organization’s biggest events is simply called GLOW with your Hands. It is a full day experience during which more than 800 students engage in hands-on experiences with the careers that are both available and growing in the GLOW region. Some event activities are demonstrations in advanced manufacturing, agricultural businesses, construction, energy, and skilled trades. GLOW with your Hands takes place at the Genesee County Fairgrounds in Batavia.

GLOW with your Hands gives area students a chance to experience various trades and other “hands-on” career paths!

“The most prominent professions in the GLOW region are in agriculture, advanced manufacturing, food production, and the skilled trades,” said Karyn Winters, a GLOW with your Hands Committee member. With its events, this organization hopes to raise awareness about these professions and to offer kids a multitude of job opportunities within them. GLOW with your hands is sponsorship and volunteer driven. The directors of GLOW with your Hands were inspired by an organization called Finger Lakes Works with their Hands. GLOW with your Hands directors, along with many other educators and local businesses, visited one of Finger Lakes Works with their Hands events in 2018 to shadow its work structure as well as to see how it ran events and the organization itself. After a year of hard work, GLOW with your Hands organization launched its first event in 2019. What GLOW with your Hands values most is building awareness among area youth, explaining that there are many different jobs available to them. Winters stated that Batavia, where the organization resides, is a rural community, and many kids graduate high school believing that there are not many job opportunities in the area while forgetting that “the manufacturer down the street that they drive by every day has jobs and is looking to hire people every day with their skill set.” GLOW with your Hands believes that every kid learns differently. While some kids can learn by reading and having discussions, many kids are very hands-on. GLOW wants to make sure that these handson learners are aware of the many possibilities and options available.

Besides this event, the organization has created many other opportunities for area kids to keep the career exploration and discussion with local businesses alive. They make connections for area kids who want to learn or train for a certain skill, in addition to helping kids “The manufacturer with job shadows and mock interviews. It down the street that promotes programs that teach kids a skill as they drive by every well as how to utilize that specific skill.

day has jobs and is

Ultimately, GLOW with your Hands looking to hire hopes to expand the different types of people every day careers on which they focus, and have had with their skill set!” many discussions on branching out into healthcare careers. They would also like to - Karyn Winters expand the understanding of many different careers. Moreover, they also hope to have more kids attend future GLOW with your Hands events, perhaps entire grade levels of students. Winters stated that the kids and their families, who tremendously appreciate this organization and the events they host to teach about handson career skills, have given the enormous amounts of positive feedback that have been the driving force for GLOW with your Hands. The organization is already planning next year’s GLOW with your Hands event, slated to take place on September 27th, 2022, and hope to only improve on what they have already done. Enjoy this article?
