HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A changing situation calls for a change in plans. Although you might prefer the schedule you had already worked up, you could do better by agreeing to make the needed adjustments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That once seemingly rock-solid proposition you favored might be hiding some serious flaws. Take time to check it more carefully and question anything that seems out of kilter. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Finish up those lingering tasks so that you can then arrange to spend some time in quiet reflection. This will go a long way in restoring both your physical and spiritual energies. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A family situation could heat up and boil over unless you deal with it as soon as possible. Try to persuade other family members to work with you to help cool things down. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Cheer up, Kitty Cat! That low feeling will begin to ebb by midweek, and you should be back in the social swirl in time for the weekend. A longpostponed deal could be starting up again. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Going too fast and too far on too little knowledge could be risky. Best to slow down and check for any gaps in your information. It’s what you don’t know that could hurt you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to make peace among quarreling family members, friends or colleagues can be tough. Expect some resistance, maybe even some expressions of resentment. But stay with it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Changing your mind doesn’t have to be a problem once you realize that you might have good and sufficient cause to do so. Make your explanations clear and complete. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unkept promise can be irksome and easily raise the Archer’s ire. But instead of getting into a confrontation, take time to check why someone you relied on came up short. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A new workplace distraction creates an unnecessary delay. The sooner you deal with it, the better for all concerned. A personal matter also should be attended to as soon as possible. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Once again, the Aquarian’s gift for applying both practical and creative methods to resolve a situation makes all the difference. Personal relationships thrive during the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A relationship appears to be losing its oncestrong appeal for reasons that might be different from what you think. An open and honest talk could lead to some surprising revelations. BORN THIS WEEK: Your life is bound by your belief that character counts more than anything else.

LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE Peak viewing times Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www.weather.com/maps/fall-foliage for the peak times for many areas of the U.S.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 4, 1918, German Chancellor Max von Baden sends a telegraph message to President Woodrow Wilson requesting an armistice between Germany and the Allied powers in World War I. After a difficult month of negotiations, World War I came to an end on Nov. 11, 1918. * On Oct. 6, 1961, President John F. Kennedy advises American families to build bomb shelters to protect themselves from atomic fallout in the event of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union. One year later, the world hovered on the brink of nuclear war after the USSR placed nuclear missiles in Cuba. * On Oct. 5, 1978, Isaac Bashevis Singer wins the Nobel Prize for literature. Singer wrote about Jewish life in Poland and the United States. One of his stories, “Yentl,” was made into a movie directed by and starring Barbra Streisand in 1983.

Pros and cons of joint replacement surgery To people outside the medical field, joint replacement surgery might sound like a solution that’s considered only after all other options have been exhausted. But joint replacement surgery has become very common, even though some studies have suggested certain procedures are being performed unnecessarily. A 2014 study published in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology found that one-third of patients who undergo knee replacement surgery may not be appropriate candidates for the procedure because their symptoms are not severe enough to merit aggressive intervention like surgery. The decision to undergo surgery is always a patient’s to make. Weighing some pros and cons of joint replacement surgery can help patients make the most informed decisions possible. Pros - The Cleveland Clinic notes that many patients who have undergone joint replacement surgeries have experienced dramatic improvement within a relatively short time after undergoing the surgery. Much of that improvement is related to pain, which for many people becomes overwhelming prior to surgery. Another benefit to joint replacement surgery is the recovery time. For example, the Cleveland Clinic notes that patients who have knee replacement surgery are usually standing and even moving the joint the day after their surgeries. Within six weeks, those same patients are typically walking comfortably with very little support. While each patient is different, any fears that joint replacement surgery will require patients to be immobile for months after surgery are unwarranted. Joint replacement surgery also can be a long-term solution, whereas the alternatives might not be. The Cleveland Clinic says that roughly 85 percent of knee implants will last 20 years, and that life expectancy figures will grow as technology advances. Cons - As beneficial as joint replacement surgery can be, it’s not without downsides. Cost is one such disadvantage. How much a patient pays for the surgery depends on his or her coverage, but AARP notes that the average knee replacement surgery costs $31,000. Such costs can be prohibitive for aging men and women who are no longer working. Another potential disadvantage to going under the knife, especially for those who are borderline candidates for replacement surgeries, is the likelihood that surgery won’t have a significant impact on quality of life. A 2017 study published in the journal BMJ found that knee replacement had minimal effects on quality of life, especially for patients whose arthritis was not severe. Joint replacement surgeries are common. When deciding if surgery is their best option, patients should consider the pros and cons of going under the knife before making their final choice.

THE BIBLE SAYS: "Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." (Isaiah 1:4, 18) "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon." (Isaiah 55:7) "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded." ( James 4:8) "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (I John 1:9) For further help, write: Burke Hill Bible Church, P. O. “More people are flattered into virtue than are bullied out of vice…” ~ Robert Smith Surtees

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Some women who have a high risk of breast cancer may choose to have a risk-reducing mastectomy (the removal of both breasts when there are no signs of cancer). The risk of breast cancer is much lower in these women and most feel less anxious about their risk of breast cancer. However, it is very important to have a cancer risk assessment and counseling about the different ways to prevent breast cancer before making this decision.

Puzzle Answers This Week

It is probably true that very few saintly people got that way entirely as a matter of their own choice. They wanted the approval of their peers (don’t we all?) and so they conducted their lives in a way such as to win approval. They were “flattered” into virtue. On the other hand, few people have ever been persuaded to give up bad habits by threats…”bullied” out of vice. The moral here, if one may be drawn, is that most of us do what is expected of us. We can best inspire others by having high expectations. Every adult, who might some day be required to make funeral arrangements, should be fully informed before the need arises. We are here to answer your questions and to offer advice, without obligation.

CAKES RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Having breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram is a factor in breast cancer risk. The level of risk depends on how dense the breast tissue is. Women with very dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with low breast density. Increased breast density is often an inherited trait, but it may also occur in women who have not had children, have a first pregnancy late in life, take postmenopausal hormones, or drink alcohol.

neighbor. While I am not able to pay you for your generosity, I do believe the Lord will bless you for your kindness.

All season, my neighbor has selflessly mowed the lawn at the home I rent. I am a single mom with two small children, and I also work full-time, so it is hard for me to find the time to mow the lawn while keeping an eye on my little ones. I couldn’t ask for a more thoughtful, caring We have a neighbor that goes out almost every Friday and/or Saturday night leaving their dogs to bark nonstop for hours. The dogs are obviously barking out of separation anxiety, and we have previously contacted the neighbors to no avail. You would think they would care that their dogs are in distress when they are not home, not to mention we can’t even open our windows on a beautiful summer night. Please be responsible dog owners and care for not only your neighbors but for how this effects your dogs on a regular basis. Thank you. I don’t know which governmental agency is responsible, the County or the Town, but I am beyond furious. The growth along the roadway was not an impediment to traffic or to visibility. It was however habitat to pollinators, filled with butterflies and bees to name but two, who foraged there. What was destroyed was nearly two miles of habitat. Now, it and they are gone. For what reason? When will we stop being so focused on what gives us a sense of satisfaction, our need for making things “neat and tidy” in the landscape, that we destroy others in the process? When will we stop going our merry way without any thought to our impact on other lives?

I enjoy reading the Rants, especially those about poor restaurant service. However, while venting may make you feel better, a post about an unnamed restaurant in an unnamed city has no effect. Did you complain to the manager? Did you contact corporate? That gets results. Some of my friends cry, “But I don’t want anyone to lose their job!” Baloney! If the servers have such disdain for their customers, they don’t belong in the service industry. The position will then go to someone who truly needs it and will do a wonderful job. My question is simple: why tailgate before passing? Whether in a legal passing zone or illegally over a double solid yellow line, it’s always the same. Someone is right on my bumper! I’m not “jumping” out of your way, if that’s your intention. I won’t

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver It may be hard to believe, but there is an official competition to see who can sit in a sauna for the longest period of time. The World Sauna Championships have taken place in Heinola, Finland, annually since 1999. The starting temperature is 110 F, and a liter of water is poured on the stove every 30 seconds. The winner is the last person who is able to leave the sauna without assistance. Competitors participate at their own risk, and they are required to sign a waiver agreeing not to take legal action against the event organizers.

CLOSING GAPS The gap that can occur between any two teeth, known as a “diastema,” most commonly appears between the upper front teeth. This gap may result due to a mismatch between small teeth (inherited from one parent) and large jaw bones (inherited from another). Otherwise, a diastema between the upper front teeth may be caused by an oversized labial “frenum” (the band of tissue that connects the upper lip to the gums between the upper front teeth). When an overly extended frenum causes the tooth separation, a ìfrenectomyî may be recommended to alleviate the force exerted by the tissue. Subsequently, the gap may close on its own, or the dentist may be able to close the gap with bonding or veneers.

Breast cancer is a formidable foe. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 627,000 women lost their lives to breast cancer in 2018. But women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer, as the WHO notes early detection is critical and could potentially save thousands of lives each year. A proactive approach is a key component of protecting oneself against breast cancer. Many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional cancer screenings, but women can keep an eye out for certain signs of breast cancer they might be able to detect on their own. Monthly self-exams can help women more easily identify changes in their breasts. During such self-exams, women can look for the following signs and symptoms and are advised to report any abnormalities they discover to their physicians immediately.

• Changes in how the breast or nipple feels: Nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Some women may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast. In many instances, skin texture has been described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous.

• Change in appearance of the breast or nipple: Unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast; dimpling anywhere on the breast; unexplained swelling or shrinking of the breast, particularly when the shrinking or swelling is exclusive to one side only; and a nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted are some signs and symptoms of breast cancer that can affect the appearance of the breast or nipple. It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician. • Discharge from the nipple: Any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. A milky discharge when they are not breastfeeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician. Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, which greatly improves women’s chances of surviving this disease. Page 20

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

Down Syndrome Parent Support Group of Genesee County, Inc. Turns 30! By Amanda Dudek

I

t all started several years ago, before services for those with Down Syndrome were widespread. Several parents started the Down Syndrome Parent Support Group of Genesee County, Inc. (DSPSG) to bond together, to have someone to talk to, to support each other during their journey. The group has evolved to serve the GLOW region and offers New Parent Packets, Family Reimbursement, National Conferences Scholarships, Scholarships to High School Seniors and more to its member families. “I have been a part of DSPSG for 28 years,” said Dawn Fisher, President of DSPSG. “There are a lot of different experiences that we have to deal with as parents which other people do not, but learning how to handle these experiences and grow as a person and as a parent…it really broadens your view of the world. You see what is and what is not important.”

This includes changing perspective. “We want to change the old stigma,” explained Fisher. “So, one of the things we do is go out and speak at area colleges, public events and provide opportunities for people with DS to interact publicly and actively in community life whether it be with students in schools or elsewhere in the community.” This year, DSPSG celebrates its 30th anniversary. Fisher hopes those with DS will continue to receive more opportunities and more acceptance from those around them. “I encourage people to really include individuals with DS and give them the same opportunities as everyone else in the community,” she said. “Give them the opportunity to show their potential and value them as contributing members in their communities. Also, show your support for their parents and other caregivers. They play a vitally important role.” Fisher also said DSPSG will continue to advocate for those with DS. “We certainly need to embrace families with DS members, regardless of the person’s age,” she explained. “We should continue to support those with DS and provide more opportunities for them as they transition into adulthood as well as throughout their adult years. I believe we really need to work on this transition piece and provide greater opportunities for adults with DS and other special needs.” The community does seem very supportive. “We are truly blessed because the community is very generous,” said Fisher. “We have had so many local businesses which actively donate to our Annual Autumn Leaves Auction each year. We are really lucky in that aspect.”

Arc of Genesee Orleans Board Member Deb Riggi and daughters Cassidy and Masha.

“We hold family events so that our families can get together,” Fisher explained. “We chat, give each other encouragement and advice. As we go through the different stages in our children’s lives, we have different needs, and our children have different needs, as well. We also hold meetings, have guest speakers who discuss the importance of having a special needs trust as well as how important it is to plan future care for our children, stipends for our family members to go to different conferences and workshops that are provided in the area. Additionally, we offer two scholarships to GLOW area High School seniors who would like to further their education in a field that works with individuals with special needs.” “We have also provided hospitals and pediatrician’s offices in the GLOW area with new parent packages about having a child with Down Syndrome,” said Fisher. “Parents and caregivers can use this as a tool and are given contact information to connect with our member families. Often, it is a shock to learn that a newborn has Down Syndrome, and having someone to speak with and provide support and encouragement is key. Information about early intervention is also provided, as early intervention is vital for the baby’s growth and development, as well as giving additional support to the parents.”

DSPSG plans to continue to pursue its mission to provide opportunities for persons with Down Syndrome and their families to engage productively and actively in community life for the next thirty years and beyond. “We always welcome new members and new families!” said Fisher. * On Sept. 7, 1813, the United States gets its nickname, Uncle Sam, when a newspaper picks up on the story of Samuel Wilson, a meat packer who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army. Wilson stamped the barrels with “U.S.” for United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as “Uncle Sam’s.”

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.
