When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org. Gift Certificates Always Available

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Your point about cats being at grave risk outdoors is just silly. Are there some dangers? Sure, there are. Small dogs are subject to the same dangers, as well as all the other animals that live outdoors. Are you suggesting that we should keep all snakes, hedgehogs, frogs, mice and turtles inside at all times because it’s a dangerous world outside? I dare say not! There is always going to be a bigger animal outside. All animals are free. It is us, as humans, who put the boundaries on animals and cage them in. Do you think that cats didn’t exist centuries ago? Of course, they did! How do you think they survived? They learned how to survive. Is it important to help those animals in need of a comforting shelter, good food and lots of love? Yes! But please don’t cage in the freedom they need in order to survive for centuries to come. -Ellen I., via email DEAR ELLEN: Those are ... interesting points. You’re right, I do harp on the importance of keeping cats inside. And for that matter, small and large dogs. And, if they are being kept as pets, snakes, hedgehogs, frogs, mice and turtles. Why? Because it keeps them exponentially safer and healthier. Staying inside reduces the chance of getting ticks and fleas. It keeps them safe from attacks by other domestic animals, coyotes, as well as (in my neck of the woods, New England) packs of wild turkeys. Keeping cats inside protects other wildlife -- cats are hunters, and they love catching songbirds, hedgehogs, snakes, frogs, mice and turtles. Readers, what are your thoughts on this issue? SPICY STEAK TAMPICO Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY High-quality food: Many local establishments have complete control over their suppliers and menus. As a result, they can be picky with regard to the vendors they use and the produce, meats, dairy, and other ingredients that they select. Many small, independently owned restaurants team up with local organic farmers and distributors to supply a farm-to-table experience that many diners now enjoy.

1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted w hen everything is w orking correctly. W heels and suspension systems bear the w eight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some w ear and tear is to be expected. M any drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for w orn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essential for a comfortable and smooth ride.

585-584-9250 DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment are generally urged to avoid vaccinations other than the flu shot, though that conventional wisdom may not be applicable in relation to the COVID-19 virus. The ACS notes that vaccines require an immune system response to work effectively, and cancer patients’ immune systems may not be able to produce an adequate response to vaccines during treatment. That can make vaccines, including those for COVID-19, less effective. However, while traditionally cancer patients have been urged to avoid vaccinations during treatment, the ACS notes that cancer patients, due to fragile immune systems resulting from both their disease and the treatments for it, are at risk for severe COVID-19 disease. As a result, doctors may still advise their patients to receive the COVID-19 vaccination even during treatment, as having some measure of protection against the virus may still be better than having none at all. No two cancer patients are the same, so those concerned about COVID-19 and the vaccinations against it are urged to discuss those concerns and their options with their cancer care team. Variants-What We Know: COVID-19 vaccines are effective against severe disease & death from variants of the virus that causes COVID-19, including the Delta Variant • Infections happen in only a small proportion of people who are fully vaccinated, even with the Delta variant. When these infections occur among vaccinated people, they tend to be mild. • If you are fully vaccinated and become infected with the Delta variant, you might be able to spread the virus to others. • People with weakened immune systems, including people who take immunosuppressive medications, may not be protected even if fully vaccinated. - CDC.gov/coronavirus_keythingstoknow – Find a vaccine: www.flcvh.org, https://www.vaccines.gov/ – Questions about COVID-19 Vaccines? Operational alarms are essential to preventing injury or death resulting from smoke or carbon monoxide inhalation. Such detectors are inexpensive safeguards that should be installed on every floor of the house. OTHER

The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept. How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upon their leaves.... But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer. ~John Burroughs, “The Falling Leaves,” Under the Maples

Bacteria Are to Blame for Stinky Shoes, Feet

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

Henrietta

---

20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: My nephew has foot odor. Even after showering, his feet have a bad odor. His shoes smell bad and have to be replaced often. What is the remedy for this problem? -- B.C. ANSWER: Foot odor is caused mostly by bacteria living on your feet. Bacteria thrive in warm and moist environments, so people who sweat a lot from their feet are at high risk. Some people are also colonized with particularly bad bacteria, such as Kytococcus (formerly Micrococcus), Corynebacterium or Dermatophilus. These bacteria do not cause disease, but they break down dead skin cells into unpleasantly smelly chemicals. A careful look at the skin on his feet may reveal small pits in the skin, especially around the heel, after a long day in socks and shoes. Treatment may include disinfecting skin solutions (such as chlorhexidine), antibiotics (topical erythromycin or clindamycin) and keeping the feet as dry as possible. This may require application of antiperspirants to the feet, either regular over-the-counter or prescription varieties. He also should wear lighter, more breathable footwear. Washing (and then drying) the feet several times daily and putting on new socks each time may also help during the treatment phase. Although ultraviolet-light shoe sanitizers exist, I’d recommend getting new footwear while trying to get rid of as much of the bacteria as possible. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BREAST CANCER TREATMENT Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. When chemotherapy is taken by mouth or injected into a vein or muscle, the drugs enter the bloodstream and can reach cancer cells throughout the body (systemic chemotherapy). When chemotherapy is placed directly into the cerebrospinal fluid, an organ, or a body cavity such as the abdomen, the drugs mainly affect cancer cells in those areas (regional chemotherapy). The way the chemotherapy is given depends on the type and stage of the cancer being treated. Systemic chemotherapy is used in the treatment of breast cancer.

DENTAL FEAR: THE REAL DEAL One of the most common of all fears is dental fear. Nearly 75 percent of adults have a fear of the dentist at some point. Although practices now optimize comfort, fear of dentistry remains constant, ranked fourth among the most common fears. Fear is our brain telling us something doesn’t feel right; however, for adults who have anxiety associated with dental visits, its source often is a traumatic dental visit in their past. Approximately ten percent of these adults are categorized as dentalphobics. Dental fear is not shameful, nor does it make one a “problem patient.” Overcoming dental fear involves taking small, comfortably paced steps to conquer dental fears and phobia. Let your dentist know how you feel!

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Just Hang Up! It’s time for us to be rude on the phone. There, I’ve said it. “Seniors are often targeted because they tend to be trusting and polite.” So says the FBI’s website page describing scams aimed at seniors. I’ve thought this for a long time, having done informal polls among friends, but now it’s official. Additionally, says the FBI, we’re targeted because we have savings, own a home and have good credit, which makes us attractive to scammers. We have the money -- they want it. But scammers are tricky. On that FBI page is a video of a former FBI director who, along with his wife, was targeted in a scam. Of all people who should have instantly realized what was going on, he was one. It was his wife, listening in the background, who made the connections. In the end, even after multiple ugly physical threats, the director didn’t cave in. The scammer went to jail, of course. But it points out how vulnerable we often are, especially when faced with sweet-talking scammers who are offering us a lot of money ... and who then switch over to threats if we don’t immediately do as they say and either send them money or give them access to our accounts. Whether it’s a tech support scam (“Your computer has a virus and we can fix it”) or a grandparent scam (“Your grandson is in jail and needs money for bail”) or a lottery scam (“You’ve just won $5 million”), it’s all the same -- a scam. To protect ourselves, we need to hang up the phone instantly when there is a likely scammer on the other end. Yes, when we were growing up, this kind of behavior would have been considered rude. But this is a whole new world, and it’s full of bad people who think we are trusting. We’re not, right? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Fall Foliage Just yesterday I marveled at The burst of Autumn colors, The oranges, reds and yellows gave A lightshow like no other. I ventured out to take some pics, To capture nature’s splendor, When looking up, instead of down, I abruptly met my car’s front fender. Nose-to-stones upon the ground, I could hear my father’s voice, “Try looking where you’re going, huh?” It would’ve been the smarter choice. So, I slowly climbed back to my feet, Got my camera, which had gone sailing, I dusted off and straightened myself, Seems my pride was all that was ailing. But nature’s beauty spurred me on, My determination undeterred, So I kept on with my photo shoot, This fleeting beauty must be preserved.

* Now’s the time to install weatherstripping or caulk for fall and winter. To find drafts, try this trick: Light a taper candle and run it very slowly along the cracks of your windows. When you see the flame flicker, that’s where you have a draft leak. * A great use for those old knee-high stockings (no runs!): Stuff with a mix of crystalized kitty litter and scent-boosting beads you can find in the laundry aisle. Stuff these in stinky shoes to freshen and deodorize. The litter wicks away moisture from sweaty feet and deodorizes, and the scent boosters last for a good long while. * “Here is a sewing tip for your column: I prewash fabrics that tend to shrink before I use them to make clothing items. That way, the fit is more accurate.” -- G.V. in Indiana * “Exfoliation can be easy if you already have a bag or jar of Epsom salts. Chili Resident Launches Fundraiser to Give Hospital Staff a T hanksgiving Meal BY AMANDA DUDEK

A

s communities continue navigating this ongoing pandemic, few workforce sectors constantly experience as much stress and pressure as hospital staff. While healthcare workers have been recognized for their sacrifice and extraordinary efforts throughout this pandemic, recent controversies have, to some extent, overshadowed these expressions of gratitude. Sean Phillips is working to make sure healthcare workers receive a timely expression of gratitude that is sure to be welcome. Healthcare workers, particularly those working in ERs ICUs, and COVID sections are‚ “as ever” on the frontlines, putting their own health at risk every day to care for others. For Sean Phillips, who moved to Chili, New York, with his wife two years ago, this reality hits close to home. Phillips’ brother, Daniel, is a nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital. “Not only have I been able to see the impacts of what we have gone through during the last year and a half through my brother’s eyes, but I also saw the strain on the system myself when I had pancreatitis due to cystic fibrosis and had to go to the Emergency Room,” shared Phillips. Last year, he was so inspired by the nurses like his brother who work hard to give the best care even while attending to many patients that he decided he wanted to do something for them. He began raising funds to give a hot Christmas meal to COVID ICU staff at Strong. “I realized that there wasn’t much of a downturn in my industry, which is cyber security. I thought I could reach out to my peers and other industries less impacted by COVID, and we could give back to these hardworking people,” recalled Phillips. His idea worked, raising the necessary funds to feed over 100 healthcare workers. “It was awesome! I was shocked at the generosity of so many people who donated from the Rochester area to Albany and beyond. It was nice to see how many people were willing to put their money towards a tangible way to give back,” Phillips shared. The meals were delivered on Christmas Eve by the Mad Hatter Restaurant in Rochester. “No one wants to work on Christmas Eve,” Phillips said. “They were so excited to enjoy a hot meal.” Their responses say it all: How did you know I needed this right now? It’s a life saver! Please thank the group that donated this. It was exactly what I needed today. I was just thinking that I needed to eat. This is perfect! Encouraged by the impact of these dinners, Sean Phillips decided to provide hot meals again this year, this time for Thanksgiving. His goal is to serve a hot dinner to all of the ER, ICU, and COVID ICU Staff healthcare staff at Strong this year, using any additional funds raised

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

to provide a hot meal for Highland staff in similar departments. Every penny of funds raised goes to purchase these meals. E. Kate Valcin, DNP, RN, CCRN-K Director of Adult Critical Care Nursing at Strong Memorial Hospital, worked with Phillips regarding his donation last year and is working with him again this year. “Last year, Sean did a fundraiser that purchased meals for our staff who work in the COVID ICUs,” she said. “At that time, we were in a situation where COVID cases were rising in the community and at our institution. There was incredible pressure as we were trying to take lessons learned from the first wave and apply them to the current situation.” “One of the things that was different about the second wave was that there weren’t global shutdowns like the first time around, Sean’s work came at a time when staff were tired, stressed, and facing a lot of unknowns.” Valcin continued. “Working the Christmas holiday is always poignant as a staff member. You are missing family traditions at home to be with your work family and caring for patients who are missing their family traditions, as well.” “As we delivered the food from Sean and his team, there were smiles, words of thanks, and renewed energy to get through the shift,” Valcin recalled. “The food was shared with nurses, doctors, advanced practice providers, secretaries, techs, respiratory therapists, student workers, essentially anyone who was on the unit. This year, Sean is hoping to raise enough money to spread smiles across other departments of the hospital in addition to the ICUs.” “So far, over $1,000 have been raised,” said Phillips. “If there are additional funds after we have served nurses in these units at Strong and Highland, we will work to move to other area hospitals, as well. Hospital staff are stretched thin because of high occupancy. This is a great time to step up and show gratitude to staff who aren’t able to be home during the holidays.” Those wishing to donate may visit Sean Phillips’ GoFundMe at https://gofund.me/f4d5b085. Wren lesson You learn something new every day! Anyway, I did have fun watching the nest-building, even though the wrens never did occupy the nest in the Penny Saver tube. Now, I guess I can take down the note I posted and remove the twigs. I’m an incidental bird watcher, and I appreciate the info. By the way, thanks to all the carriers who avoided the Penny Saver tube!

S E V RA Hurrah for vaccinated healthcare workers! Thank you for getting vaccinated! It means so much to people, and it makes us more comfortable around our doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers. You did the right thing for your community. Kindness does matter I was so sad to hear about the child’s experience with some other children at the park. It’s possible it’s because of the Covid issues, but it’s sad that this happened. Our granddaughter only has one sibling who is much too old to play, so she’s mostly by herself and longs for children around her age with whom to play. Covid has found so many ways to destroy our lives. All this sadness just breaks my heart. I’m sure she will find friends soon as I believe most who live here are quite friendly. Our granddaughter is four, and she doesn’t give up on finding friends. She continues to seek friends when she’s at the parks, so they may meet sometime. Tell your granddaughter that she will make friends and may find a friend or two for life. Happy days are ahead. God Bless!

I called the clinic, and we took him on an emergency call. When we arrived, they were ready for him. We had Dr. King. Awesome job, Dr. King! We know it was serious. With her help, advice, and therapy by her and by Symon’s mom, Symon has recovered a lot. He’s now walking and running. This all happened three months ago. What a great job Dr. King and staff--including registration and the check-in lady-did! This could have come out as a sad ending, but it is a happy ending. A huge thanks; you are all so awesome! God bless you all! - Symon’s Mom Good Samaritan On September 20th, I fell outside the Christmas Tree Shop in Henrietta. I would like to thank Dave who got me up and made sure I was all right. Thank you, My Good Samaritan, and may God always be with you. Thank you!

No dogs here! I have lived here for a very short time. I must say that this complex is a very good place to be. Everyone helps each other. There are a few complainers, but thankfully, there aren’t many. The complex manager is very efficient and very helpful. I’m sorry for the people who feel this place is “going to the dogs.” I like that we can meet each other, and we get to go to lunches thanks to the manager. I know that whatever problem I have or anything I may need has always been very quickly taken care of. So keep your complaining to yourself, and let’s all enjoy what we have. Zero, not hero You took yourselves from hero to zero! You aren’t an enemy; you just show you do not care. Any good healthcare worker would not want to hurt a patient in any way. By not getting vaccinated, you are possibly passing Covid on to them. What if you pass Covid to a child, and that child passes away? Are you ok with this? We aren’t! A good healthcare worker would not want this. Perhaps this job isn’t the one for you. Retire or quit please. I do not want unvaccinated people near me at any time!

Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

DID YOU KNOW? Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.
