DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from grow ing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But w et leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the law n through the w inter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons w hy so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Prepare a familiar dish. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easy on themselves by choosing dishes they’ve made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely won’t require as much time to prepare.

Klondike is a 24 year old Goffins Cockatoo. He is very playful and loves kids. He doesn’t fly but walks around the house like he’s the boss. He chases the cat and eats her food just because he can. He loves company, especially if they come with toys or big tools. He likes watermelon, rye toast, Ritz crackers and going to McDonalds for French fries. Wrap him in a warm towel or put him in a warm room or in sunshine to make him happy!

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Behaving well around service animals DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you kindly remind your readers that service animals and companion animals are not there for other people’s amusement? Too often, people who see a service dog in public will rush up and try to pet the dog or even hug them. Please educate them on the proper etiquette when they see a service pet. -- Janine D. in Syracuse, New York DEAR JANINE: Thank you for this timely reminder. Service animals are highly trained to provide assistance to their owners for specific health or mobility issues. Companion animals provide crucial emotional support to owners as well. With any pet, it’s not just good manners to ask before approaching or trying to touch them. It’s also a safe way to interact with pets and their owners. This is especially important with service and companion animals. They’re doing a job when out in public. For example, seizure alert dogs are trained to detect an approaching seizure and will gently warn their owners to get to a safe place. Mobility assistance dogs help owners maintain their balance, or with tasks like pressing buttons and opening doors. It isn’t always evident that they’re working, either. For example, you may see an autism support dog sitting or lying next to their owner. They’re not off duty; they’re helping their person stay calmer in a social setting. Some good behaviors around service animals include: -- Speak to the owner/handler, not to the animal. -- Don’t touch, talk to, feed or handle the service animal. -- Guide/service dogs have the right of way. SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER
A GUIDE TO BUYING PRE-OWNED VEHICLES Exercise caution with private sellers. Buying from a private seller is a bit riskier than utilizing a dealership. That’s because the due diligence falls on you as the buyer. Ask for a vehicle history report (commonly known as the CARFAX®) for any vehicle you’re considering, even if it means paying for the report. The report will list any accidents and other red flags. If a seller refuses to offer the report, pass on the deal.
AUTO SECTION
Utilize in-vehicle energy feedback. A recent study from researchers at the Institute of Transportation Studies found that drivers who used driver feedback devices in their vehicles in an effort to save fuel improved their gas mileage by about 10 percent. Many modern vehicles are equipped with such devices, and drivers can learn to use them and reap the rewards with less frequent trips to the filling station.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal. * The process of things being stretched out and torn apart as they enter a black hole is called spaghettification. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so hot. (“That’s what I’ve been telling you!” said every airplane food chef, ever.) *** Thought for the Day: “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” -- Oliver Wendell Holmes AUTOMOTIVE ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

POLL STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne According to House Beautiful, in Victorian times, Christmas trees were traditionally set up and decorated quite late in December, often on Christmas Eve. Today, the marketing blitz seems to start at or before Halloween. Psychologists say decorating early spikes people’s happy hormone, dopamine, so perhaps decorations help make/keep people happy longer. If you decorate for Christmas, when do you decorate your home? - Early November - After Thanksgiving - At first snowfall
* There have been more than 300 different Kit Kat flavors in Japan, including soy sauce, “European cheese” and wasabi. Some of them are limited or regional editions. Because the candy bar’s name coincidentally sounds like the Japanese expression “Kitto Katsu,” which translates to “You will surely win,” it is a popular good-luck gift for students ahead of their university exams.

Pembroke Jr/Sr High h School Veterans Outreach Club Honors Veterans for Wreaths Across America Day BY SUZIE WELLS
I
n 2008, the US Congress declared December 13th Wreaths Across America Day, commemorated by festive, symbolic wreaths laid upon the headstones of US veterans in cemeteries across the nation. According to Wreaths Across America, these wreaths are each made with care, full of symbolism in every piece. Wreaths are made of ten balsam bouquets, symbolizing the ten special qualities veterans embody: their belief in a greater good; their love for each other; their strength, work ethic, and character; their honesty and integrity; their humility, selflessness, and modesty; their ambitions and aspirations; their optimism for America; their concern for the future; their pride in their duties; and their hopes and dreams that didn’t always come true, but left them with no regrets.” Evergreen components symbolize longevity and endurance, the red bow symbolizes the veteran’s great sacrifice, the forest scent symbolizes purity and simplicity, and the circular shape symbolizes eternity. What started as one individual’s (Morrill Worchester of Maine) small project to honor US veterans at Arlington National Cemetery expanded over the years to a nation-wide program helping citizens honor our fallen veterans. In 2007, the Worcester family and veterans’ organizations and individuals across the nation formed the 501(c)(3) organization with the simple mission to “Remember. Honor. Teach.” Just a year later, over 300 locations participated in all 50 US states, Puerto Rico, and 24 overseas countries, with 60,000 volunteers helping honor the veterans. The program continued to expand. In 2022, Wreaths Across America and its volunteers nationwide placed more than 2.7 million sponsored wreaths on veterans’ headstones at 3,702 locations including the Western New York National Cemetery on Route 77 and Indian Falls Rd in Pembroke. When a volunteer places a wreath on a veteran’s grave on National Wreaths Across America Day, the organization encourages them to speak that veteran’s name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice, and reflect on that person and their life. Wreaths Across America is committed to teaching all generations about the value of their freedoms, and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed so much to protect those freedoms. “Our service members and veterans deserve (and sometimes need) our support all year-round. At WAA, we believe it’s our responsibility to invest in our living veterans so that they may thrive in our communities.”
The Western NY National Cemetery is growing at an extraordinary rate. Last year there were just 750 headstones, and this year there are 1,600. The Pembroke Veterans Outreach Club, a student organization at the Pembroke Jr./Sr High School is selling the wreaths on behalf of the Memorial Council. Club Advisor, Matt Moscato, says last year the club sold or collected donations for almost 500 wreaths, and they hope to sell enough this year to place a wreath on each of the now-1,600 veteran headstones. The Veterans Outreach Club and Pembroke Schools also help the council facilitate the Wreaths Across America Day event. Beyond selling wreaths, the kids set up, stage the wreaths, pass them out, direct participants to the proper rows, clean up and help break down the event. They then collect the wreaths at the end of the season. Moscato says, “It is truly a community-wide event.” Last year there were well over 150 attendees helping lay wreaths on veterans’ headstones. Local fire and police departments help with parking and traffic control, and the Pembroke School transportation department shuttles attendees to different sections of the cemetery. Junior club President Lilly Senko leads the Veterans Outreach Club. Lilly has been an active member since 7th grade. She has led many club activities, including dinners with the Eagle Star House, collection drives for local veterans, patriotic activities with the elementary school, the opening ceremony for the Pembroke Veterans Wall of Honor in 2021, helping run the Purple Heart ceremony, and helping coordinate the club’s recent trip to Alaska. Lilly is also a talented artist who designed their Alaska trip t-shirts. Lilly plays a major role organizing this year’s Wreaths Across America Day events. The Outreach Club appreciates the community’s support in honoring our local veterans during the holiday season and helping support the good work of the WNY Memorial Council. For more information about the Wreaths Across America program visit wreathsacrossamerica.org. For more information and to sponsor wreaths at Western NY National Cemetery, visit www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/ny0368p.
On December 16th, this year’s Wreaths Across America Day Ceremony will be held at the Western New York National Cemetery, featuring a short ceremony including the Presentation of Colors, National Anthem, and the Ceremonial Laying of Wreaths by each military branch. Following the ceremony, family members with loved ones buried there will lay wreaths on their headstones first, then the club will adorn the remaining headstones.

DID YOU KNOW? The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.
Elections decide the leadership that guides legislation and enforcement of regulations. The right to vote is something many people take for granted, but elsew here in the w orld many people have no say w ith regard to their political leaders, w hich only emphasizes the importance of partic ipating in the elec tion process w henever you’re afforded the opportunity to do so. The first step to prepare for Election Day is to confirm your eligibility. Age, legal residency and citizenship status are just a few of the factors that may affect your eligibility to vote. County clerks, municipal offices as w ell as the Division of M otor Vehicles should have voter registration forms, and additional information is available online. Voter registration may have to be filed several weeks to a month in advance of Election Day in order for you to be eligible. In the United States, when voter eligibility is in question at the time of an election, a person typically may cast a provisional vote, which will then be considered after other ballots are counted. Once your eligibility has been verified, it is important to know the dates of key elections. Local new spapers often print schedules and this information can be found online as w ell. Various local and federal elections occur each year, and November is when national elections take place in the United States. Before voting, voters should researc h the respec tive candidates for each election. To better understand candidates’ platforms, visit their w ebsites as w ell as those of nonpartisan political organizations, such as The League of Women Voters. Deciding w ho to vote for requires more than just siding w ith a particular political party. Read as muc h as you c an on the candidates’ beliefs, concerns and voter history. This w ill help you make the best decision possible. In the days leading up to Election Day, confirm your polling location and voting options. USA.gov advises that if you need special assistance, contact your local elections office for information, advice, and educational materials about voting equipment and details on access to the polling place, including designated parking. Keep in mind that, in addition to voting for candidates, you may asked to answ er additional questions about issues impacting your local community. These are called ballot measures. A voter guide also may include information about certain issues that w ill require your vote.

How to show your support for veterans
S
upporting veterans is a worthy endeavor at any time of year, though such efforts tend to be more prominent in November. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 in honor of the millions of individuals across the United States who are military veterans. The day coincides with holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other countries and also honor military veterans. There’s no denying that veterans need the support of the people whose freedoms they protect. According to a 2021 study from researchers at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the percentage of veterans with disabilities is significantly higher among post-9/11 veterans (40 percent) than it was with veterans from previous eras (25 percent for Gulf War I veterans and 13 percent for veterans of previous wars). Veterans can benefit from support legislated by elected officials in Washington, D.C., but there’s also many things ordinary citizens can do to show how much they appreciate the sacrifices veterans and their families have made and will make in the years to come. • Visit wounded veterans. The United States Census Bureau reports that more than one-third of the nearly 3.8 million men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces since September 2001 have a service-connected disability. Many of these individuals are fighting to overcome physical injuries sustained while on active duty. Individuals who want to show their support for veterans can contact their local Veterans Affairs (VA) facility to arrange a visit to wounded veterans. Such visits can lift veterans’ spirits and reassure them that their sacrifices are both acknowledged and appreciated. • Support legislation that supports veterans. Though it might seem like a no-brainer, legislation to support veterans often faces an uphill battle to get passed. By supporting legislation that ensures veterans get the support they need, individuals can send a message to veterans that they haven’t been forgotten and that the very democratic principles they fought to protect are alive and well. Citizens can write letters to their elected

officials, urging them to support veteran-friendly legislation, and raise awareness of bills and laws through social media. • Help raise awareness about homeless veterans. Data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that approximately 40,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. But that figure doesn’t tell the whole story, as the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans notes that, over the course of a year, roughly twice that many veterans experience homelessness. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) believes that programs to assist homeless veterans should focus on helping them reach a point where they can obtain and sustain gainful employment. In addition, the NCHV feels that the most effective programs are community-based, nonprofit, “veterans helping veterans” groups. Individuals can offer their support to such groups through financial donations or other means so they can continue to ensure no veteran sleeps on the street. Veterans Day is a time to show veterans that their service and sacrifices are not taken for granted. Visiting wounded veterans and supporting efforts to ensure veterans get what they need to live full, healthy and happy lives is a great way to send the message that veterans are appreciated.

HOW TO STAY MENTALLY SHARP AFTER RETIREMENT Enroll in an adult education course. A 2014 study published in the journal JAMA Neurology examined the association between lifetime intellectual enrichment and cognitive decline in the older population. The study’s authors found that higher levels of late-life cognitive activity were associated with higher levels of cognition. The study’s authors concluded that lifetime intellectual enrichment might delay the onset of cognitive impairment. Retirees can look into adult learning programs at local colleges and universities to see if anything piques their interest.

Here’s a Tip * “For that nagging toilet where the chain on the flush lever keeps getting stuck, here’s what I do: Trash that chain and use some curling ribbon. Tie it on and adjust the length. Once you’ve got it set, you shouldn’t have to mess with it again for a very long time!” -- M. in Minnesota * Need pumpkin pie spice? Mix 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves for each teaspoon needed. * “Clearance aisles and sales are a savvy shopper’s best friend. I buy age-appropriate games and toys all year from sales rack and with coupons, so that I am always armed with birthday presents and donations to holiday drives.” -A.P. in Pennsylvania * Here’s a great cooking hint: When you want to sear meat, make sure you pat it dry using either paper towels or a kitchen cloth specifically for that purpose. Kudos to Honeoye Central PTA On Friday, October 27th, the Honeoye Central PTA hosted a Trunk n Treat in the parking lot in front of the school. Weather was ideal and so, so many turned out with their children to trick n treat. Thank you to the PTA, the parents that had their vehicles decorated, Richmond Recreation Department, and to the Richmond Fire Department, who all were passing out treats to the many, many children that came. The Honeoye Community should be proud of themselves for making that night perfect from start to finish. Looking forward to next year.
Taunting Neighbors I clean up the leaves by our property line. The neighbors come through after I clean and push their leaves into the area I just cleaned, on my side of the property line. They do this repeatedly every single year, sometimes several times a week. Every time I clean they purposely push their leaves into my yard. They do it solely to taunt me. Guess what, ladies? I’m not stooping to your level. Blow all your leaves into my yard. I don’t care. The joke is on you. Your behavior reflects on you. Not me. Speeders To all the drivers that speed down [local road] with their loud vehicles, get a life. We have walkers and bicyclists who walk and ride all day on this road and you are endangering them along with other drivers who obey the law. You think your loud vehicles are cool, but guess what, they are not. So why don’t you go hang out in the kiddie park where you all belong because none of you should have a license. Hopefully the police will read this and start handing out tickets on [local road] and stop you morons from injuring someone or god forgive KILLING THEM. Hyaluronic Acid Can Improve Joint Pain, but Isn’t Recommended

DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend recommended hyaluronic acid for joint pain in my wrist and hand. I have been taking 180 mg once a day for a couple months now and have experienced notable success. I also feel that my neck pain and range of motion in my neck have improved. My question is, what exactly is hyaluronic acid? Is it safe, and are there any side effects I should be aware of? -- T.E. ANSWER: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance composed of long strings of sugar. Because of this structure, it carries a great deal of water, so it acts as a shock absorber and lubricant for several places in the body, including the joints. Hyaluronic supplements are usually purified from chicken cartilage, but can also be produced by bacterial fermentation. The body makes about 5,000 mg of hyaluronic acid daily. Multiple studies on injections of hyaluronic acid have shown that it is only slightly better than a placebo at treating arthritis, especially of the knee. I have stopped recommending injection treatments to my patients with knee arthritis, as they are quite expensive. Oral hyaluronic acid, however, is inexpensive. There have been several small studies showing benefit (again, mostly for the knee rather than the neck), but I couldn’t find any well-done large studies that were convincing. There is very little harm from hyaluronic acid. None of the studies I’ve read found any serious side effects; however, that doesn’t mean it is completely safe, since supplements aren’t regulated the way prescription medicines are. But I can conclude that oral hyaluronic acid is possibly effective and probably safe for treatment of osteoarthritis. The studies have mostly used doses in the 100-200 mg range, but I have seen supplements for sale that have 20 mg or less of hyaluronic acid. I’m glad you are taking a similar dosage to what is shown to be effective. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEING IN NATURE Nature and overall well-being - Given the aforementioned health benefits related to spending time in nature, it’s easy for even non-scientists to conclude that being outdoors has a profound impact on overall well-being. But non-scientists can rest assured that recent research has confirmed such conclusions. A 2019 study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that individuals who spent at least 120 minutes a week in nature were significantly more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who spent less time outdoors. Though the authors of the study cautioned that the exposure-response relationship was under-researched, and therefore likely needed to be studied more extensively, in the meantime individuals, after a consultation with their physicians and confirmation that it’s safe to get out more often, can aspire to spend at least 120 minutes in nature each week. The results may speak for themselves.
RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY OVERVIEW Restorative dentistry repairs or replaces teeth, with the goal of improving oral health and chewing function. Restorative dentistry treatments are used for standard dental issues like tooth decay and cavities, damaged or broken teeth, and missing teeth. They often double as cosmetic procedures that help restore the appearance of your smile. Fillings, crowns, and root canals are all restorative treatments. So are inlays and onlays, which are used when a cavity is too big for a filling but too small for a crown. Bridges are used to replace a missing tooth or a row of missing teeth. Dental implants also replace missing teeth without altering your remaining natural teeth. Dentures can alternatively be used to replace missing teeth.
the result of years of research by professionals dedicated to making dental care as effective, efficient, painless, and long-lasting as possible. For compassionate dental care, including complete restorations, cosmetic dentistry, and regular cleanings, our primary goal at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is to treat our patients with the best, most up-to-date, gentle dentistry possible. Office hours are by appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre, a very pleasant place to get a new smile Please call us at 585.343.4246. P.S. Restorative dental procedures lower the risk of needing extractions in the future.

TIPS TO COPE WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE Discuss the death of your loved one. The APA notes that avoiding talking about a deceased loved one can lead to isolation and a disruption in the healing process. Speaking about the death of a loved one can help individuals understand what happened, and that understanding can facilitate the healing process.
Harold “Cubbie” Culbertson 11/24/1941 - 11/2/2023 Born on Thanksgiving Day in 1941, this biggerthan-life man lived his life as fully as he knew how, growing up on a dairy farm, graduating from Dansville High School, serving in the Army National Guard, a member of the Masons and Amaranth, an excellent square dancer, an enthusiastic golfer, a top-notch mechanic & proud owner of Cubbie’s Repair Shop, an active member of the Dansville Presbyterian Church, dedicated groundskeeper for Noyes Hospital & Sonyea Golf Course, and a school bus driver for many years. “Our fathers teach us what we should become; our mothers teach us what we are…” ~ Peter Davidson
Lucky is the child who has two devoted parents. Guidance from both mother and father may be equally important, but it’s apt to come from slightly different viewpoints. It’s perhaps natural that a father wants to help us amount to something and avoid the troubles that could damage our lives. Mothers want that for us, too, but they’re more likely to be realistic. They are better at helping us to recognize our strengths and weaknesses… to understand our potential in terms of what we really are. You may call on us for advice and guidance such as you would expect from your closest friends. Our goal is to be worthy of your trust. A Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, from our staff.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE DRAFTING A LIVING WILL Do I want to remove the burden of tough choices from my loved ones? A living will relieves grieving loved ones of the responsibility of making challenging decisions of invoking life-saving procedures or not - particularly if they’re not sure what you desire.
DID YOU KNOW ? The origins of Veterans Day can be traced to the ending of World War I nearly a century ago. Know n at the time as “ The Great War,” World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919 w ith the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in France. But the fighting had actually ended seven months earlier w hen an armistice betw een the Allies and Germany w ent into effect on November 11, 1918. The follow ing November United States President Woodrow W ilson declared November 11 “ Armistice Day” in honor of the cessation of the hostilities, and the day became a federal holiday in 1938. That act w as amended in 1954 after veterans service organizations, in recognition of the efforts of soldiers w ho fought in World War II, asked that the day be renamed “ Veterans Day” so it honored all soldiers and not just those w ho fought in World War I. HOW BUSINESSES CAN EXPRESS APPRECIATION FOR EMPLOYEES Highlight workers on social media. Social media is a significant part of modern business operations. Companies can create a Wall of Fame page that puts a weekly spotlight on a different employee who is contributing in his or her own way to the operations. Not only does this improve the morale of the team, it provides the public with a glimpse into the positive working environment of the company. Page 37
