POLL The impeachment process is officially underway in respect to President Trump. Emotions run high on both sides of the issue, with some feeling this is just the latest of his impeachable offences and others believing he has done nothing to merit impeachment whatsoever. Should President Trump be impeached? • Yes! He’s guilty! • Wait for evidence to conclude. • Let the people decide in the 2020 election. • No! He’s innocent!

7 Ways to Boost your GrAttitude this Thanksgiving By Amanda Dudek
S
haring around the table has come full circle, and now it’s your turn. Of course, you are thankful for your family, your home, the family dog, but didn’t you say that all last year? This is the Thanksgiving moment that makes me anxious, not discovering the turkey is dry or the gravy is lumpy. November, that minx of months, has rolled around once again, and Thanksgiving Day fast approaches. Messages about being thankful swirl around us as thickly as an autumn fog, bringing with them a flurry of suggestions. In spite of what has become a pea soup for the soul, how can one truly be a thankful person? Many people take this time of year as an opportunity to serve at a food pantry or soup kitchen, participate in a clothing or gift drive, donate to a good cause or some other charitable act. Most gather together with family and friends, sharing a meal and even mentioning some things for which they are grateful. These traditions are all wonderful ways to express thankfulness and are worth keeping; however, true thankfulness grows from our everyday interactions. In fact, for many of us, Thanksgiving Day is a blip on the calendar that flies by far too quickly. While it is meant to be a celebration of our many blessings, it has little to do with whether or not we have a grateful approach to life. If we only set aside Thanksgiving Day as a time for thankful reflection and expression, we may find we lack a sufficient well of gratitude from which to draw.
Everything takes up emotional space: joy, anger, fear, happiness, resentment, love. Processing toxic emotions can open up new space to fill with thankfulness. A few mindful additions to your everyday habits can grow your gratitude all year long, leaving you filled to overflowing and eager to share each Thanksgiving! 1. Write a one line note to each member of your family, sharing one thing about them for which you are grateful each Sunday evening. This will not only send you to bed feeling thankful for your family, but also your family will start their week feeling loved and appreciated. 2. Get involved in a local charity or cause that touches you personally and inspires you. This may lift your spirits and give you authentic, comparative gratitude, unlike “staged” Facebooks photos. Once or twice a year is admirable, but it is simply not enough to impact your outlook long-term. 3. Set aside quiet time for thankful reflection. It will refresh your outlook and refocus you, especially after stressful days.

4. Turn aggravation on its head by shifting perspective. For example, in this current hyper-political climate, inflammatory statements about nearly every political view, candidate and affiliation abound. Rather than being drawn into a mudslinging frenzy, consider being thankful for the freedom to voice various opinions. 5. Take time out to notice your environment. There are so many things we take for granted, especially during the holiday rush: clean water, hot water, dishes in the sink because we have food to eat, laundry because we have clothes to wear, the physical ability to get out of bed, a place to live, toothpaste, a doctor and pharmacies that actually have medicine, even warm beds in which to sleep. This is not to say that there are not issues and challenges which should be addressed, simply that the good often greatly outweighs the bad if we are looking for it. 6. Gratitude multiplies when shared, so mention things you are grateful for and mention them often. Tell your coworker you are thankful that she made the coffee this morning. Let your son know you are grateful for his kindness to his sister, or simply thank someone for their smile. 7. Get your family involved. Create a Gratitude Space using a whiteboard, chalkboard or poster paper. Family thankful notes “in the moment” are sure to make you smile! While I will always look forward to my dad’s savory sausage stuffing, sweet potatoes with marshmallows and brown sugar, juicy slices of turkey and tangy cranberry sauce followed by a slice of my mom’s delicious pumpkin pie, I think what I am most looking forward to this year is my turn to share the many wonderful blessings I have found in the everyday. Love to write? We are looking for YOU! Become a volunteer writer and share your original story, personal experience, community happening or school event with us! It will be featured on our popular website for all to see. Who knows - it may even end up in print! Go to My Hometown at www.gvpennysaver. com or email our Hometown Editor Amanda Dudek at AmandaDudek@gvpennysaver.com!

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Choosing coverage. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses.
The Alhart Funeral Home wishes to express their deepest sympathy to the family of
Theresa Wyckoff, wife of Donald Wyckoff, mother of Robert and Christopher, grandmother to Lily, many family and friends.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. A serving of turkey is only 161 calories and contains just four grams of fat, w hich is low in saturated fat.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Nov. 30, 1939, the Soviet Red Army invades the tiny nation of Finland with 465,000 men and 1,000 aircraft. Helsinki was bombed, and 61 Finns were killed in an air raid, sparking fierce Finnish resistance. On Nov. 26, 1942, “Casablanca,” a World War II-era romantic drama starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, premieres in New York City. The Oscar-winning film featured a number of now-iconic quotes, including “Here’s looking at you, kid.” On Dec. 1, 1959, 12 nations sign the Antarctica Treaty, which bans military activity and weapons testing on that continent. It was the first arms-control agreement signed during the Cold War.
Seniors Have A Lot To Smile About (NAPS)—Healthy teeth and gums are an important part of overall well-being. However, as people age, they become more prone to gum disease and other oral health problems. With regular dental check-ups and proper care, your smile may never get old. Smile, California, the Medi-Cal Dental Program’s campaign to improve oral health among its members, wants seniors to know that they can see the dentist for an exam and cleaning once a year. This dental visit can help keep their gums and teeth healthy, strong and pain-free. “Medi-Cal Dental covers routine, preventive and restorative care for more than 13.5 million members in California. In January 2018, California Senate Bill 97 restored optional adult dental benefits for members ages 21 and older with full-scope dental coverage, making it easier for eligible seniors to receive free or low-cost dental care,” said Alani Jackson, Chief of the Medi-Cal Dental Services Division within the California Department of Health Care Services. Use of the Medi-Cal dental benefit is important because, according to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately one in five seniors lives with untreated tooth decay; and about 68 percent of adults age 65 or older have gum disease. To help keep your smile healthy and strong, the American Dental Association offers these additional tips: • See the dentist on a regular basis, even if you have dentures. • Brush and floss, or clean your dentures, daily. • Watch for changes in your mouth. Your risk for oral cancer increases as you age. If you see any changes in your mouth, it’s important to get them checked out by a dentist or doctor. • Talk to your dentist or doctor about dry mouth. Dry mouth can make it hard to eat, swallow, or talk. It can also lead to tooth decay or infection. • Practice healthy habits such as eating a balanced diet, limiting sugary foods and drinks, and avoiding cigarettes and other tobacco products. Visit SmileCalifornia.org to learn more about covered services and to find a dentist near you. Visit your dentist annually to keep your teeth and gums strong and healthy.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER According to the automotive retailer Pep Boys, vehicle tires lose a pound of air pressure for every 10-degree drop in temperature. Many modern cars will alert to changes in air pressure, and drivers should be diligent in maintaining the proper tire pressure. Fuel economy as well as handling ability can decline when tires are not inflated properly. Tires can be refilled at many gas stations for little cost.

Extend the life of your vehicle: Take care of your vehicle’s interior, too. Caring for a car is not just about being good to what’s under the hood. Caring for the car’s interior will not necessarily impact its performance, but a well-kept interior will improve how you look at your vehicle and how much you enjoy driving it. The longer you enjoy driving your vehicle, the longer you are likely to keep it. Preserve the vehicle’s door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats; and wipe down the vehicle’s interior, whether it’s cloth or leather. Keeping up the appearance of the car’s interior will make the vehicle more enjoyable to drive and increase its value at resale.

Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

What’s the first step in sound proofing your hom e? Finding w hich room s have the least am ount of sound resistance. To do this, m ake sure everyone is out of the house, unplug all electronics and close all doors and w indow s. Take a quick w alk through your house and pause for a few m om ents in each room to evaluate w hich ones are the noisiest. Now consider if you’re installing a m edia room or teenage recreational room w here volum es w ill be blasting on TV’s and stereos. With this inform ation, you should have a good idea of w here you need to soundproof and create barriers against noise. Here are som e tips to help you achieve the optim al result of peace and quiet: • Plant trees and hedges along the exterior of your hom e, perhaps along a fence. Not only do trees and hedges help w ith the environm ent and provide a good am ount of privacy, they also slow dow n the travel of noise from the neighborhood into your hom e. • Insulate your w alls and ceilings. Better insulation in your interiors and exteriors w on’t just drive aw ay excess noise, it w ill also reduce your heating and cooling bills during the hot and cold m onths. • Seal up all cracks and holes around w indow s and doors, and add double glazed w indow s to your current glass panes.
BRING MORE NATURAL LIGHT INTO A HOME Use reflective decor. Reflective surfaces, including glass and metal, can brighten up a room and diffuse light around a room. Glossy backsplashes, pendant lighting and shiny metal that reflect light can increase the natural light, balancing out dark spaces.

HOME SERVICES
Need A Plumber?
Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) While it seems that chaos is taking over, you get everything back to normal, even if it means being more than a little assertive with some people. Expect to hear more job-related news soon. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Expect to be able to move ahead with your workplace plans now that you have a good idea of what you might have to face. You also can anticipate a welcome change on the home front. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A quieter period settles in, giving you a chance to catch your breath, as well as allowing for more time to handle some important family matters. The arts dominate this weekend. Enjoy them. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The frustrations of last week have pretty much played themselves out. You should find things going more smoothly, especially with those allimportant personal matters. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Once again, you find a creative way to resolve a pesky problem in short order. However, a matter involving a possible breach of confidence might need a bit more time to check out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Reuniting with an old friend could lead to the sharing of some great new experiences. But be careful you don’t find yourself once again being super-critical or overly judgmental. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You should be seeing some positive results following your move toward repairing that unraveling relationship. There might be some setbacks, but staying with it ultimately pays off. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Encouraging a friendlier environment in the home could go a long way to help dissipate anger and resolve problems, especially those affecting children. It won’t be easy, but you can do it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent act of kindness is beginning to show some unexpected (but very welcome) results. On another note, expect to hear more about a possible move to another locale. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The good news is that the sure-footed Goat can rely on his or her skill to get around obstacles in the workplace. The not-so-good news is that new impediments could turn up later. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A change of pace is welcome but also confusing. Before you make decisions one way or another, be sure you know precisely what it is you’re being asked to do. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Don’t fret if you don’t get the gratitude you think you’re owed for doing a nice thing for someone. There might be a good reason for that. In any event, what’s important is that you did it. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of making the sort of wise decisions that ultimately shed new light on dark situations. GREENER WAYS TO DO HOLIDAY SHOPPING Shoppers can travel to stores together to reduce the amount of vehicles on the road. Carpooling or ridesharing to stores can prevent excessive vehicle emissions. Carpooling also has the added benefit of allowing drivers to utilize carpool lanes on major highways. This keeps cars moving at steady speeds, improving fuel efficiency and reducing the likelihood that fuel will be wasted while sitting in stop-and-go traffic.

Some people commute out-of-town for work; however, few of us would like to travel as far for such things as dentist appointments, a dinner out, a movie or groceries. Your local independent business community is an economic ecosystem, and each purchase you make ripples through it, adding to its health as a whole.
What a world of difference it makes to spend only a few more dollars a month locally! In fact, according to Independent We Stand, if Americans spent just $10 a month at locally-owned, independent businesses instead of national chains, over $9.3 billion* would be directly returned to local economies. Independent We Stand further claims that “if every family in the Rochester metro area spent just $10 a month with a locally-owned, independent business instead of a national chain, over $33,083,006* would be directly returned to the Rochester community. That means better schools, better roads, more support for police, fire and rescue departments and stronger local economies.”

The Finger Lakes Region of New York has some of the most beautiful and charming villages anywhere in the United States, and local, independent businesses are their backbone. It is too easy to take local businesses for granted, only to feel disappointment when a local shop closes and empty storefronts multiply. The gradual disappearance of independent businesses means that more and more money is being sent elsewhere from local communities, and towns risk becoming mere filling stations for other destinations. But there is good news – you can change this trend!
The choice to preserve local communities has to be made from the wallet. Is it worth a little extra time and perhaps a few extra dollars to help independent businesses thrive? Yes! I say “perhaps a few extra dollars” because, if you are like me, you purchase at least a handful of impulse items whenever shopping in a big box store or online. What you save on impulse buys will likely offset any price differences!

HOW TO ORGANIZE OFFICE GIFT EXCHANGES Close-knit groups of employees commonly exchange gifts with one another come the holiday season. Friendly coworkers enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of their friends and fellow employees, and these informal gift exchanges can benefit company morale and establish a familial atmosphere at the office. In spite of the good-natured reasons to exchange gifts with coworkers, some people are nervous about the prospect of gifting fellow employees. Questions regarding what makes for an appropriate gift or how much to spend may arise, turning office gift exchanges into potentially puzzling situations.

hope he stays there a long time. It’s nice to have a local honest mechanic. Thank you so much for everything!
I want to thank a local business, Dansville Auto Mart, for all the hard work. Their mechanic, Dana, worked on my Malibu, told me what I truly needed to fix it, and didn’t try to sell me stuff I didn’t need. It’s so hard to find honest people anymore for jobs like that, and he fixed my car right and was professional. I Mixing drinking alcohol with shooting guns at a suicide-prevention fundraiser? That is not smart, not to mention dangerous! When will people find common sense again? People have died from just that combination: being impaired and shooting a gun! It is safer to have area carnivals to raise funds! This store relies on free donations to stay in business, yet when I dropped off two bags of items, the worker who was unloading items from her car was rude and screamed at me. Where is this attitude coming from? Without donations, the store would have to close, and people donating items should be thanked, not screamed at. That worker complained that she was old and frail GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

After cleaning off my truck from the first crazy snowfall of the year, I turned on my wipers only to have the driver’s side bust in half. I carefully drove across the street to the auto parts store where one gentleman delightfully opened the door for me. Bringing in my broken wiper blade to the sweet ladies behind the counter, the customer next to me told me that if I bought the wiper, he would put it on for me. I didn’t know this guy at all, and he obviously and could not carry in donations, even though she was unloading items from her car. Maybe she should check into a nursing home and stop working at the store if this is how she treats people bringing in donations. Try talking to the offending party. Tell the business owner you had poor service; leave a note for the neighbor; engage with the dog owner who isn’t cleaning up after their pet. The options are endless. For the record, grass is mowed 5’ back from the roadway to protect drivers and creatures who might come flying out of the field. There is no room for error when the view is blocked.

So, I sent her (Caucasian) friend into the store 20 minutes later, and she was never asked her age or to leave. In fact, she was greeted with open arms. Shame on the bitter, racist old lady who told my daughter she had to go. The world does not revolve around you. You’re not the only one dealing with obnoxious neighbors, inconsiderate drivers, ignored phone calls and emails, ungrateful people. What makes your time worth more than mine? We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community! Your donations are used in the day-to-day operations of caring for the terminally ill and their families. person? Things happen. Yes, people can be rude. People can be incredibly wonderful. Maybe there are extenuating circumstances surrounding their words and actions. Haven’t you ever made mistake, said or done the wrong thing? God made us all the same. We’re not above anyone else. Things happen to me, too. Something good happened in your day today. Let’s focus on that! This isn’t a rant or even a positive vibe, it’s a suggestion. Since the November elections are over, I’d like to see the candidates & their supporters remove all the campaign signs. Thanks!

Daughter Got Measles Despite Vaccination ---
5A Batavia City Centre Batavia
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter is 4 years old and has, in

the past five days, developed measles. She was vaccinated at 9 months and has been treated with antibiotics, Tylenol and vitamin A supplements. What concerns me is that she is now experiencing seizures, even without a fever. They are not grand mal seizures, but simple ones. They have me worried. What can I do? -- G.A. ANSWER: Measles remains a serious disease in many parts of the world, with 90,000 deaths reported in 2016. Even in industrialized nations, there have been outbreaks involving tens of thousands of people infected. Vitamin A supplementation may be of value in those who are deficient, and Tylenol can help keep the fever down, reducing the risk of febrile seizures. The antiviral drug ribavirin sometimes is used, though without clear evidence of effectiveness. Otherwise, there are no effective antibiotics or other treatments for measles. When seizures occur in a child with measles in absence of fever, it can indicate a complication called encephalitis -- inflammation of the brain. Children also may experience nausea and vomiting, and they usually have a headache. Confusion and sleepiness are other common symptoms. The diagnosis can be confirmed by an evaluation of the fluid around the brain, the cerebrospinal fluid, which is sampled via a needle inserted into the lower back. Confirmed encephalitis with measles is treated with steroids. This reduces the risk of permanent brain damage from the infection. Even so, 25% of children may be left with some impairment, including epilepsy. Unfortunately, vaccination at 9 months is not adequate protection. Children’s immune systems may not be able to fully respond to the vaccine so early. Children are recommended to have the measles vaccine at 12-15 months and again at 4 to 6 years in the United States. In countries where risk of measles mortality remains high, children are vaccinated at 9 months, then again at 15-18 months. During an outbreak, a dose may be given as early as 6 months old, in addition to the other two doses.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I get horrible fever blisters when I go on any tropical vacation and am exposed to lasting sun. These blisters develop on my lower lip. I have tried sunscreen, but nothing has worked. On my most recent trip, the blisters appeared on the final day and took nearly three weeks to heal. It’s painful and horribly embarrassing. Is there anything I can do? Should I see my dermatologist? -- S.A. ANSWER: The sun can cause many kinds of skin reactions. In some people, the light itself causes the problem (these reactions are called photodermatoses). In others, the sun causes a reaction in combination with exposure to a particular substance. Sometimes, it’s a fruit, especially limes. In people with blisters around the mouth, I think of mangoes, especially if you are enjoying them in the tropics. Some skin diseases just get worse in the sun: Lupus is the classic example, but there are many others (my textbook lists about 50, some quite rare). A dermatologist is indeed the person to see. In the meantime, wear sun-protective clothing on your next tropical vacation, and consider a blocking sunscreen like zinc oxide in the areas where the blistering has occurred in the past. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. FIVE TIPS FOR PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION SUCCESS (NAPSI)—For people who are on one or more daily prescription medicines, forgetting to take a pill can happen from time to time. Planning ahead for such schedule-disrupting events as vacations and special events can help you stay on track and minimize any health risks that might result from not “taking as directed.”
DEPRESSION COMMON BUT TREATABLE It’s normal to experience feelings of sadness and grief from time to time. But when these feelings are prolonged or interfere with daily life, they may be symptomatic of depression. Depression can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or economic status. The National Institute of Mental Health says around 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Understanding depression can help those dealing with the disorder.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
TONGUE LESIONS As part of a comprehensive examination of the oral cavity, the dentist or hygienist will carefully inspect the patient’s tongue for irregularities. Among the most common is “geographic tongue,” an inflammatory condition that produces white and red patches on the upper surface of the tongue. This condition, which usually resolves spontaneously, derives its name from the fact that the tongue’s surface takes on the appearance of a map. The specific cause is unknown, but stress, allergies, diabetes, and hormones may contribute to its development. While treatment is not necessary, topical steroids, antifungal medications, and other drugs may help to control flares. Geographic tongue may be accompanied by “fissured tongue,” which presents with small grooves (fissures) on the tongue’s upper surface.
Tongue, teeth, gums, palate, lips they all play their part in a healthy mouth and a gorgeous smile. If you are having any oral health issues, we strongly suggest a visit to the dentist for a professional diagnosis. It can save you time, money, and substantial aggravation in the long run. Our friendly, relaxing, comprehensive dental office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246. P.S. As people age, fissured tongue occurs more often and produces a harmless but prominent fissure down the center of the tongue that requires good oral hygiene to remove debris.

Doctor’s Advice “It’s really important to take your medication exactly as prescribed, even if you don’t feel different after missing a day or two,” explained Dr. Victoria Losinski, director of pharmacy services at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. “This is especially true for people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, because their risk of ending up in the hospital is 2.5 times greater when not following a doctor’s treatment plan.” The mantra “you have to take the medicine for it to work” goes beyond diabetes control. People who don’t take their prescribed high blood pressure medication on a regular basis have a 42 percent higher chance of developing chronic heart failure. And people on high cholesterol medications are twice as likely to develop heart disease if their cholesterol is not under control. What You Can Do To help, here are five tried-and-true tips for strengthening your everyday prescription medication habits: 1. Talk to a pharmacist. Some drugs have very specific instructions on when to take them, whether to take them on an empty stomach, with certain foods or to avoid in conjunction with certain medications. Your pharmacist can help you understand your medications and map a plan to stay on track. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota members can also call the number on the back of their cards and speak with a nurse guide. 2. Write it down. If you’ve got several medications to manage, write down the details to keep them straight. Consider using a small one-page calendar, such as the kind found in a checkbook or available through a downloadable tracker, to mark off that you have taken your meds each day. 3. Get organized. Using a pillbox is a simple low-tech way to make sure you take exactly what you need when you need it. There are also pharmacies, including PillPack, that sort your prescriptions, vitamins and other overthe-counter medicines into dated packets to make taking your meds even easier. You can also ask your pharmacy if it offers a similar program. 4. Set an alarm. Use your smartphone to schedule reminders. If you’re looking for an app, try Rxremind, which can be downloaded for iPhone or for Android. 5. Refill on time. Accessing your pharmacy’s auto-refill program, requesting a 90-day supply and using a mail-order prescription service are all good ways to help make sure you don’t run out and miss your medication. BIG IDEAS FOR BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES (NAPSI)—If you own or run a business, you’re not alone. There are some 30 million businesses in the U.S., ranging from small storefronts to large enterprise entities, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. While businesses of all sizes play a critical role in the economy, each workplace faces its own unique challenges, especially as it relates to growth and scalability. With company and workforce growth comes changing telecommunication needs. You might need to hire staff in new areas or cater to mobile millennials. Employees often expect their employers to provide them with flexible communication tools. Most business professionals want multiple connectivity options from their business phone solution, according to recent research from leading tech firm IDG. If you’re like most managers, you desire top-of-the-line technology that can help drive operational efficiencies and cater to your growth projections. Growing a business can be expensive but you shouldn’t have to miss out on communications solutions that can empower your workforce and spur continued growth. When you’re looking at your telecommunication needs, keep these important factors in mind. First, consider durable, affordable Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) deskset phones, which can manage Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls. Moving your telecommunications to the cloud can expand your phone system while maintaining central control. Cloud-based VoIP scales up or down, making it easy to add new locations or increase head count. SIP can also improve your business if you’re upgrading from an Ethernet jack or a traditional circuit transmission. This technology provides clear audio and reduces the need for costly installation and maintenance contracts. Some SIP desksets offer excellent user experience. Think color LCD screens for easy navigation, second screen displays with programmable keys, HD sound quality for natural conversations, and Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free headset calls. Secondly, take an introspective look at what’s truly needed from a communications perspective of your business. Evaluate what your operational landscape looks like. You may require full-featured desksets and handsets, which can hold, transfer, conference and intercom. Or you may need cordless solutions to dramatically improve mobility around a busy workplace. Cordless handsets and wireless headsets let people take calls as they move around a restaurant, warehouse or large office, for example. Also consider whether you’ll need the ability to expand your communications system as your business grows. You may find multiple cordless handsets or desksets, with their own phone numbers or extensions, essential to future-proofing your company for more employees and customers. Remember, the right communications tools can have a major effect on the productivity, experience and growth of your company. Select a phone solution that meets your unique needs, as well as one with flexibility, mobility features, dependable call quality, advanced call handling, reliable U.S.-based technical support, and warranty coverage. Good examples of these solutions include the new ErisTerminal SIP desksets and cordless mobility solutions from VTech Business Solutions. CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

When leaving a job, it is important that professionals exhibit a certain measure of grace and etiquette. Leaving a job with dignity and mutual respect can benefit professionals in the short- and long-term.
Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.
FINDING WORK AFTER 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. Men and women over 50 may consider their experience from 20 years ago invaluable, but if that experience does not meet the specific needs of the jobs they’re now seeking, then they should remove it from their résumés so hiring managers can quickly access the more relevant information from their work histories. Embrace 21st century job hunting. Finding a job in the second decade of the 21st century is unlike job hunting in decades prior, and wholly different from how men and women over 50 looked for jobs upon beginning their professional lives. Networking can mean the difference between unemployment and landing a job. Go to job fairs attended by hiring managers and join professional organizations that host events where professionals in your field can gather. Turn your age into a positive. Men and women over 50 should accept the likelihood that their new managers and/or hiring managers will be younger than them. When interviewing for a job, men and women over 50 should make an effort to showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning from younger colleagues, while also noting their desire to commit long-term to a company. Some hiring managers may surprise older applicants, viewing them as potentially more reliable than younger workers simply looking to gain some experience in a particular industry before moving on to the next opportunity. Make use of your existing down time. Another strategy unemployed men and women over 50 can try as they look for work is to make better use of their existing downtime. Enrolling in online courses can give prospective employers the impression that applicants over 50 are both tech-savvy and willing to learn new things. Each of those things can help men and women over 50 overcome any unjustified, tech-related stigmas that hiring managers may attach to older job candidates. Finding work after 50 is not always easy, and job seekers may need to adjust their approach before they can get back in the workforce. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

EASY ‘GREEN’ THANKSGIVING IDEAS Shop locally and organically. When shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, choose local produce, poultry and grains whenever possible. Resist the urge to buy more than you need as well. Skip some of the less-popular dishes that are used only to make the table seem full. Buy a small turkey or think about only serving turkey breasts, which tend to be the most popular cuts of the bird. Use reusable shopping bags to carry items home and reduce waste even further.
