Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death in infants. Young children not can choke on food as well as objects they put in their mouths while exploring the world around them. Parents of young children and hosts who intend to invite youngsters into their homes can learn how to respond when kids appear to be choking. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following approach when tending to children under the age of 1, which differs from the steps necessary to address choking instances in older children and adults. · Assume a seated position and hold the infant facedown on your forearm, which is resting on your thigh. Support the infant’s head and neck with your hand, and place the head lower than the trunk.

· Thump the infant gently but firmly five times on the middle of the back using the heel of your hand. The combination of gravity and the back blows should release the blocking object. Keep your fingers pointed up to avoid hitting the infant in the back of the head. · Turn the infant face up on your forearm, resting on your thigh with the head lower than the trunk if the infant still isn’t breathing. Using two fingers placed at the center of the infant’s breastbone, give five quick chest compressions. Press down about 11/2 inches, and let the chest rise again in between each compression. · Repeat the back blows and chest thrusts if breathing doesn’t resume. Call for emergency medical help. · Begin infant CPR if one of these techniques opens the airway but the infant doesn’t resume breathing.

Christmas at Clarissa’s
Fraser fir trees are typically uniformly pyramid-shaped trees that have strong branches that turn slightly upward. These trees have good needle retention and a dark, blue-green hue. Many people feel these trees have a pleasant scent. Because they are such a quintessential Christmas tree, Fraser fir, as well as their close cousin, Balsam fir, tend to be more expensive than others.

Serve locally sourced foods. Food is often front and center during the holiday season. Whether hosting family and friends at home, dining out or catering an office party, patronize businesses that sell only locally sourced foods. Locally sourced foods are much more eco-friendly than foods that must be shipped from afar before they land on your dinner table, and such foods tend to taste fresh as well. If serving at home, use reusable dishware and cutlery instead of paper plates and plastic utensils.

Hold That Turkey Leg: It’s the Annual Thanksgiving Pet Safety Brief
Plan time to walk the quaint, decorated village, browse unique shops, and enjoy a variety of delicious food. Many locations have great specials and surprises for all to enjoy. There is too much to list!

It can be difficult to keep track of what your pet is eating during the busy holiday season, especially during big meals. That’s why I recommend placing pets in a separate room until people are done eating and the food is put away out of reach. You still need to control their diet, and you can’t always catch Aunt Gladys sneaking peanut butter cups to the dog. Enjoy your holiday, and thanks for keeping your pet safe!

DEAR MANUEL: It may be difficult to keep tabs on all of your dinner guests, so consider placing your dog in a room or in his kennel during the meal and then rewarding him after with some tasty leftovers.
The same rules apply to cats, by the way. Because they’re small, they may have a more severe reaction to ingredients like grapes, avocados or onions.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you remind me what foods are unsafe to give to pets? I know onions are bad for dogs, but I’m not clear on other ingredients. My dog loves scraps from the table, and I want to make sure my Thanksgiving dinner guests don’t feed him something dangerous. -- Manuel C., San Antonio, Texas
When he does get his treat, make sure that it doesn’t include the following ingredients: onions, garlic, raisins or avocado. Turkey is fine; take the skin off to remove extra salt and seasonings that might upset his stomach. Avoid feeding him stuffing. The mashed potatoes should be plain, and hold the gravy. A little apple or pumpkin pie should be fine, but keep him away from chocolate. And try to limit the amount of fat in the leftovers, because too much can cause some messy digestive problems.

www.facebook.com/HometownHolidaysCMNY STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the early 1800s, a railroad marketer set up a head-on collision between two trains as a publicity stunt. Some 40,000 people came to watch, and the resulting boiler explosion killed three spectators. But ticket sales soared, and railways everywhere staged train crashes right up until the Great Depression. * One of the weirdest scandals in sports history occurred in 1973 when New York Yankees players Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich decided to trade families -- wives, children, even dogs! After the couples became close friends, Peterson fell in love with Kekich’s wife and vice versa. “It’s a love story. It wasn’t anything dirty,” Peterson told a reporter in 2013. Peterson is still married to the former Mrs. Kekich, but Kekich and the former Mrs. Peterson later split up. * Pepper spray and tear gas are technically classified as chemical weapons and thus are forbidden in warfare. * The human body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring a gallon of water to a boil. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal. * The process of things being stretched out and torn apart as they enter a black hole is called spaghettification. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so hot. (“That’s what I’ve been telling you!” said every airplane food chef, ever.)

WHAT SMALL BUSINESSES CAN DO TO ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITIES Participate in local events: Local events like holiday bazaars and town festivals provide great chances for business owners to communicate directly with new and existing customers. Take advantage of the chance to set up a booth at such events, and make a concerted effort to reach out to consumers who stop by the booth. The customer feedback experts at Apptentive found that 97 percent of consumers are somewhat likely to become more loyal to a company that implements their feedback. Setting up a booth at a bazaar or festival provides a great chance to solicit feedback that businesses can then implement to retain more customers.

One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. Page 13

If the person on your shopping list has just about every material possession one can imagine, giving unique experiences might be the way to go. The National Retail Federation confirms the shift in attitude, noting consumers across all age groups now spend more on experiences than they did in years past.

Here’s a Tip * Don’t throw away that damaged garden hose. Here are three great uses: 1. Use as a weather strip along the bottom of your garage door. 2. Use sections to protect the blades on your ice skates. 3.Use as a safety edge on your saws in the shop. Cut to fit and slip it over the blade. * “If a small screw keeps coming loose on something, remove it, paint it with clear nail polish and rescrew quickly. This often does the trick. Makes it more grippy.” -- I.W. in Minnesota * Defog your mirror with shaving cream. Smear it over the entire surface and then wipe away with a clean towel. Keep cleaning until clear. It works for at least two weeks -- NO FOG! (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Mail-Order Meds Lose Efficacy if They’re Not Stored Properly

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am concerned, and have been for some time, about whether my prescriptions that arrive by mail are compromised, since they sit in vehicles with the sun beating through the windows, heating them up. Also, the plastic bottles in which the prescriptions are stored give off toxic emissions as they “broil” in the sun. The instructions that come with some of the meds warn about heat as well. My pharmacist told me that heat does affect a medication’s effectiveness negatively. So, if this is true, millions of us are taking important medications that are basically not doing the job. After all, the meds that arrive at pharmacies come in hot vehicles, too. What’s your take? -- J.Z. ANSWER: All medicines should be stored in a cool, dark place, as direct sunlight and heat can damage their effectiveness. Studies have proven that medicines sent by mail order can indeed get out of their published temperature range. While this happens most often in mailboxes, I understand your point about medications “broiling” in hot temperatures during the shipment itself. Liquid medicines, hormones and nitroglycerin are among the most sensitive. Medicines that need to be dosed exactly, such as transplant rejection medicines, biologicals, and seizure medicines, are also particularly likely to cause problems if they are damaged during shipping. Although some medicines are supposed to be shipped in packaging with cold packs and insulation, this isn’t always the case. I recommend using a local pharmacy, but many people have prescription plans that require them to use mail order. Many states have requirements about customers using retail pharmacies. If that’s not the case for you, try to make sure that the medicine will be delivered when you are available to receive it. If you have a temperature-sensitive medicine, such as the ones I mention above (you can ask your pharmacist about others), request that your mail-order pharmacy sends it in special packaging during warm weather. You might also consider having them shipped to a place where they will be put into a temperature-controlled environment right away. ***

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEING IN NATURE Nature and overall well-being - Given the aforementioned health benefits related to spending time in nature, it’s easy for even non-scientists to conclude that being outdoors has a profound impact on overall well-being. But non-scientists can rest assured that recent research has confirmed such conclusions. A 2019 study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that individuals who spent at least 120 minutes a week in nature were significantly more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who spent less time outdoors. Though the authors of the study cautioned that the exposure-response relationship was under-researched, and therefore likely needed to be studied more extensively, in the meantime individuals, after a consultation with their physicians and confirmation that it’s safe to get out more often, can aspire to spend at least 120 minutes in nature each week. The results may speak for themselves.
HOW DIABETES AFFECTS ORAL HEALTH Plaque, tartar, and cavities are all caused by bacteria in your mouth. Diabetes reduces the body’s ability to fight bacteria, putting people with diabetes at higher risk for oral health problems and diseases. Maintaining low blood sugar levels is important for fighting bacteria and preventing oral health issues. The presence of gum disease also weakens the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels. People with diabetes need to stay on top of daily brushing and flossing and may need more frequent teeth cleanings and trips to the dentist. People with diabetes are also more likely to have a condition called dry mouth, which causes oral health problems itself because saliva flow is essential for flushing bacteria from the mouth.
why all new patient exams are so thorough, so we can establish a baseline against which we can measure your future oral profile and progress. And for patients dealing with diabetes or other chronic disease, regular professional checkups make it possible to watch for developing concerns and address them while they are still small, before they can turn into something more serious. For an appointment for advanced, gentle dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Some of the medications used to treat diabetes and related symptoms cause dry mouth. Your dentist can prescribe an oral rinse that helps reduce dry mouth.

Kudos to you! Learning that the long-time GVPS Circulation Manager is retiring I feel the need to send my best wishes for her retirement and many, many thanks for a job well done. I’ve had occasion, a few times in the past, to pass on questions to her (I was a long-time employee at GVPS). Each time the situation was taken care of promptly. Good luck to you, Shari! Audrey What a wonderful gesture A big thank you to the thoughtful gentlemen who handed out cards at ALDIs in Geneseo wishing us a wonderful Thanksgiving and tucking $50 bills inside. I was blown away. I’m so thankful to see that wonderful and selfless people are present in a hostile, at times, world. Bless you! You made our thanksgiving!
Our Turn to Pay it Backward I was disappointed to read the rant from my fellow senior citizen complaining about paying school taxes. I need to remind the writer that when our children were in school, seniors citizens at that time paid to support them. The medicare and social security benefits that we receive come from the taxes that current workers pay. Think about how our lives would be affected if young people questioned why they should support baby boomers and refused to pay their medicare and social security taxes. Current workers are paying it forward to help us and it is our duty to pay it backward to help the students of today become successful productive citizens. Why can’t we get along? Every week it seems that there is somebody complaining about their neighbors. Why can’t we all follow the Golden Rule of treating others as you would want to be treated? Some of the things people do to their neighbors are inconsiderate while some of the things people complain about their neighbors doing are trivial. How about thinking about your actions and how it may affect your neighbors before you act. I’m always touched by the neighbors who mow lawns and do snow removal to make their neighbors lives easier as it is evidence of how our neighborhoods should be. Why don’t we all begin next week with the goal of making our neighborhood a better place? GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

TIPS FOR BUYING A TEEN’S FIRST VEHICLE
SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER Take it easy behind the wheel. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy reports that aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 30 percent when driving at highway speeds and 40 percent when driving in stop-and-go traffic. Avoid speeding and rapid acceleration and braking.

Feeding the Spirit: Pastor Dave Fish’s Mission Against Food Insecurity BY SUZIE WELLS
P
astor David Fish, of the North Bergen Presbyterian Church, established the North Bergen Food Pantry in August 2019 as a mission activity of the North Bergen Presbyterian Church.
Fish, a veteran of the Navy and Army National Guard, served as chaplain in the Air Force from 1996-2011, where he found his passion. He has and still is very active in outreach, working with programs such as church-sponsored soup kitchens, homeless outreach, and the St Joseph’s House of Hospitality, all in urban areas. In 2016, upon graduating from the Seminary at Roberts Wesleyan College, Fish served as pastor of North Bergen Presbyterian Church. Fish, with his wife, Ann, and their three children relocated to Genesee County. As pastor to a very small church, Fish felt he had more to give and the time to do it. He missed his mission work, but in the rural farming community, it was not apparent who needed his help. Fish says, “I thought the easiest way to find people in need was to feed them!” He shared his idea with members of his church and four women agreed to help. The church had an unused room Fish cleaned out. He contacted Rochester’s Foodlink and he and the four volunteers took the necessary training, secured shelving, a freezer, and two used refrigerators, and shortly thereafter opened the doors of the North Bergen Food Pantry. Word spread, and soon people from towns in Genesee, Orleans, and western Monroe Counties regularly came. “This is not only a place to get food,” volunteer Pat Iamon says, “It’s a friendly welcoming place where Pastor Dave takes the time to greet each person and introduce them to the pantry. Through that process he gets to know the patrons and their families. In turn those he befriends often feel comfortable sharing their hardships. This is where Pastor Dave does his best work!” often referring patrons to other services and agencies. Fish says, “There is such need in this area, more than you would suspect. People are really hurting. The elderly and those on fixed incomes seem to fare the worst.” Pastor Dave’s welcoming attitude is shared by volunteers. They happily greet new patrons and welcome those they’ve gotten to know. Long time volunteer, Audrey, looks forward to greeting the young children entering and happily pulls them aside to read them a story from one of the many children’s books donated while their parents wait to go through the line. Fish also loves meeting children; he gets down to their level and engages them. Iamon says it helps that he usually offers them a treat! Even though Fish also works as a part-time minister at Stone Church in Bergen, he finds time to do extra special things. Fish really enjoys the holidays and loves spreading holiday cheer. For the last few years, the pantry has made Thanksgiving and Christmas boxes with fixings for a complete dinner for one hundred families in need. Fish even reached out to other churches and businesses in the community to help him give every young child in each family a Christmas stocking full of goodies!
Pastor Dave holds baby Sawyer while her parents shop at the pantry.
Iamon says, “A couple of winters ago Pastor Dave saw that many patrons were in desperate need of winter clothing. He spread the word to other churches and posted signs at the pantry and collected the much-needed coats, gloves, hats, and even boots. Volunteers organized the donated clothing, and they were available at the pantry for anyone in need.” Fish says, “As a result of the COVID pandemic, the pantry has become even more vital. Food costs have risen and there have been supply-chain issues, causing many families to make difficult decisions with regard to feeding their families.” To date, the pantry has served over 1,000 individuals from nearly 394 households. However, Fish’s goal of combatting food insecurity in his muchloved community may soon come to an end. “I’m very worried that those who have come to rely on us will suffer greatly!” he says. On December 31st, the North Bergen Presbyterian Church, which marks 200 years of service, will permanently close. Membership has slowly dwindled and members made the difficult decision to close. And with it will go the pantry unless they find a suitable space. Fish says they have what they need, refrigerators, freezers, shelving units and, most importantly, volunteers to continue this mission, but they need a space to operate out of. Anyone with potential vacant space available by the end of December is asked to please contact Pastor David Fish at 585-290-5487. If you need food or wish to contribute to the North Bergen Food Pantry, please give him a call.
Along with food, household and hygiene supplies, the pantry has books for all ages and occasionally used toys. During COVID, one volunteer sewed and donated facemasks to include in each child’s Christmas stocking and were available at the pantry.

Obviously, Einstein was speaking of so-called higher education. Our basic primary schools teach us to read, write and calculate.... the foundation of all future learning.... and these skills cannot be underestimated. Perhaps the most important thing we learn as we advance in our studies is that we have much more to be learned. The more we learn, the more we appreciate the value and the power of knowledge. We learn that we can never know everything but we also learn that we can find out, from various sources, what we need to know. We recognize that there is sometimes a need for a non-traditional, minimum service. We can supply whatever a family desires at whatever price they feel to be appropriate.

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.
