(NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season. “Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.”

• Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home. • Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year. • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source. • Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets. • If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequately watered and get rid of it after Christmas or when it gets dry. Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departments across the country are looking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members. “The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.” Training is provided by the department, and volunteers can serve in a variety of roles, from providing life-saving emergency response services to conducting fire prevention programs and disaster preparedness planning. IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or threeseason room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings. ●

Add insulation. M any older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Hi! I’m I was rescued from an abusive home down south when I was 3 months old. I just turned a year this past January! I’m not exactly sure what I am breed-wise. I love napping and playing with toys, as well as being spoiled with clothes (including boots!). I am a great car traveler - I nap almost the entire time! I also know a few tricks - paw, high five, sit, and lay down - my humans are working on teaching me how to roll over! I’m a self-proclaimed lap dog that loves cuddles! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

LeRoy’s Winterfest By Amanda Dudek
1.
It’s not quite “fah, who, foraze, dah, who, doraze” around the tree in Whoville, but there is something uniquely heartwarming about joining one’s friends and neighbors for community fun and festivities during the holidays. It draws us out, braving the chill, snow and cold, to enjoy hot chocolate, holiday decorations, Christmas cookies, the Nativity, Santa Claus, parades filled with floats and thousands of twinkling lights. Festivities bloomed all over our readership area last weekend. We’ve captured glimpses of their fun and Christmas spirit during LeRoy’s Winterfest!

Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

Thank you, Batavia! Thank you to the downtown businesses in Batavia for the beautiful window decorations. We love coming down Main Street and seeing all the festive lights and decorations!
My, my, with all the chaos in the world, this rant keeps surfacing about someone assisting a handicapped person in a wheelchair, without being asked to do so. Calm down about someone being concerned about you. You really have your teeth in this. My mom was handicapped with polio, and she was an independent woman who did many things in her life. Yet, she was gracious and gladly accepted help or assistance when needed. She never viewed assistance as a form of someone having pity for her. In a world where many lack care and concern for others, I think you should appreciate the kind act of others. Also, if you don’t want help or feel it as an assault, then you can still graciously decline the kind gesture. Enjoy the life you have!

Gratitude to an honest gentleman! My heartfelt thanks to the gentleman who found my little purse in the Batavia WalMart parking lot on Monday, December 2 and immediately turned it and its contents in to the Customer Service department. It must have fallen off my arm while walking to my car. I never expected to find it already waiting for me, intact, in the few minutes it took me to return to the store. I am deeply grateful for your honesty and integrity. Have a blessed Christmas!
Pleasant surprise at the RPO concert! My wife and I were in line to get our RPO tickets at Livonia High School when a woman came up and handed us a ticket. We were stunned to find that the admission was fully paid and never had a chance to thank the woman. So, a very public Thank You for your kindness!
To the dog owners who walk their dogs at [local park] and then leave little plastic bags of dog poop all over the place - stop! Cleaning up after your dog does not mean leaving bags of poop for others to pick up. Take it with you and dispose of it in your garbage. Leaving it is lazy and disgusting!
very appreciative of his kind and caring help. Would you rather he keeps walking by, leaving the person stranded? Your thought pattern is very odd. I hope I never have to read another rant about this again.
Time and again, a person in a wheelchair complains and apparently doesn’t appreciate the kindness that perfect strangers display toward them when they offer to help. How sad! Just a couple of days ago, my adult son inquired when he saw someone in a motorized wheelchair having difficulty. Their battery had gone dead. He was able to get help and push the person to an area where the battery could be recharged. The person was

Regarding the comment about E-cigs and “when are they going to take our motorcycles” - hopefully soon! They are a hazard on the highways and annoyingly noisy. E-cigs have caused numerous problems, and one death is too many. Distributors and manufacturers should be jailed. So, educate yourself and grow up! other such services). It’s great! Also, you can screen your calls for calls from Hospice if you know the Hospice phone number and have caller ID. Thoughts are with you.
Isn’t it a state law that when drivers use their windshield wipers that they must use their headlights as well? Wondering why police don’t ticket cars that don’t do this. Can anyone explain why every year retailers locally and nationally start pushing Christmas sales when it isn’t even Halloween yet? Plus, this year Black Friday seems to be occurring every week. Can’t we just enjoy the holiday?

Unfortunately, more than half of working adults and 47 percent of all Americans say they are concerned with the amount of stress in their lives, according to a survey from the American Psychological Association. Canadians, too, are feeling stressed. The North American research company Ipsos found that stress affects 76 percent of the Canadian population. Reducing stress can be especially important during the holiday season, which, thanks in part to its hectic nature, tends to produce extra feelings of stress. Gifts that pamper, relax and rejuvenate might be the ideal fit for those who need a little rest and relaxation. Tis the Season

(NAPSI)—There’s a reason it’s called the “common” cold: Adults have an average two to three colds per year and children even more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Problem Most people recover from a cold within a week to 10 days. But decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications, according to the American Heart Association. Read The Label Be sure to read labels on over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have high blood pressure (HBP). Some contain decongestants such as oxymetazoline, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine. You should also look for warnings related to high blood pressure or HBP medication and talk to your health care professional before taking OTC medications or supplements. And don’t stop taking prescribed medications without talking to your doctor. Some OTCs are also high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. So look at the active and inactive ingredients lists for the words “sodium” or “soda.” If you have high blood pressure, you should consume less than 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources—and one dose of some OTCs can contain more than a whole day’s allowance. Be Careful With Supplements Or Natural (Naturopathic) Remedies Special pills, vitamins or drinks don’t substitute for prescription medications and lifestyle modifications. Talk to your health care provider before taking any OTC drug or supplement that claims to lower your blood pressure. They may not work as advertised and may interfere with other medications. Some, like natural licorice and diet pills, can even raise your blood pressure. What Else To Watch For Other drugs and substances that can raise your blood pressure include:

The top emerging domestic destinations all have one thing in common: the great outdoors. From ghost towns to sea islands, adventurous travelers are visiting places like Big Bend National Park, Olympic National Park and Chattahoochee National Forest. “This is the third year in a row travelers’ desire to be outdoors has filled the up-and-coming destinations list,” said Vrbo Travel Expert Melanie Fish. “Clearly, people want the comforts of a home away from home while soaking in scenery.” On the rise: same-city stays Same-city stays refer to people booking vacation rentals in their own city—not to be confused with staycations, which involve staying at your own home. The top single place that Chicago Vrbo renters come from is Chicago, and that rings true for a number of major American cities, including Philadelphia, Dallas and Atlanta. Another emerging travel phenomenon may come into play: celecations, when families and friends gather to celebrate special occasions. People who live in town may rent a vacation home to host and comfortably accommodate groups of guests for a holiday or a milestone life event. Hottest international beach destinations Where are trendsetting travelers heading to the beach in 2020? Portugal. The country took three of the top five spots on Vrbo’s list of international beach destinations: Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto and Lisbon. Portugal is known for its affordability and for some of the best waves in Europe. Other destinations include Chania, Greece and Catania, Italy. Drivable destinations: moving up More Americans are taking short-stay vacations of two or three days—likely an outgrowth of flexible time-off policies and prioritization of experiences with people over material goods. Whether it’s a long weekend or a day trip, an exceptional vacation destination is less than a tank of gas away! In fact, Vrbo’s top five short-stay destinations are all less than 300 miles away from the top origin markets that guests were traveling from. From urban getaways to nature escapes, travelers are taking short trips to these top destinations: St. Louis; McCurtain County (Broken Bow), Okla.; Newton County, Ark.; Grays Harbor County, Wash. and Ruidoso, New Mexico. On Dec. 16, 1773, in Boston Harbor, a group of Massachusetts colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians board three British tea ships and dump 342 chests of tea into the harbor. The raid was in protest of the British Parliament’s Tea Act of 1773, which granted the East India Company a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade. On Dec. 19, 1843, Charles Dickens’ classic story “A Christmas Carol” is published. Dickens was sent to work in a factory at age 12 when his father was thrown into debtors’ prison. On Dec. 22, 1864, Union Gen. William Sherman presents the city of Savannah, Georgia, to President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman captured the key Confederate port after his famous March to the Sea from Atlanta.

Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

Older adults may think they are no longer at risk for getting cavities because they no longer eat sweets with the abandon of young children. However, the risk of developing tooth decay begins to rise with the onset of middle age. In part, this has to do with receding gums, which leave vulnerable roots exposed. There is also the increased potential for old amalgam (silvercolored) fillings to shrink or fracture, thereby allowing bacteria to seep down into old cavities to start decay anew. Furthermore, many older people experience reduced saliva production, a condition aptly called “dry mouth,” which reduces the ability to stave off tooth decay. For all these reasons, older adults should remain vigilant against decay.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Size Determines Risk of Aneurysm Rupture ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My boyfriend recently was diagnosed with an aneurysm. The report says the abdominal aorta is 3.02 cm in largest dimension and recommends screening every six months. Do we need to see a cardiologist for a second opinion? Is there medication to help? -- B.S. ANSWER: The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body. It comes directly off the left ventricle of the heart and supplies blood to the entire body. It may become enlarged either in the chest (a thoracic aneurysm) or in the abdomen. Abdominal aortic aneurisms are more common in men, especially over 65, and smoking is the biggest risk factor. There are contributing familial conditions as well, such as Marfan syndrome. Most people have an abdominal aorta that is no bigger than 3 cm, so your boyfriend is just barely over the cutoff. His risk for rupture, the dreaded complication of an AAA, is negligible at this size. I agree with the screening recommendations, and would advise tobacco cessation if he smokes, regular moderate exercise and control of blood pressure if high. Seeing a cardiologist would be very reasonable: Your boyfriend could get personalized advice on risk reduction. Although aspirin and statin drugs may have a benefit, the evidence for it is weak. Most experts do not recommend them unless there are other indications for taking them. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a hernia operation in 2015. The repair included insertion of mesh patches that now have been recalled. Since the operation, I have had many health issues. Is there a blood test or other test to see if the mesh is the cause of my problems? Should I have it removed and replaced? I am 83. -- J.C.L. ANSWER: Surgical mesh is commonly used in hernia repair, as well as in many gynecologic surgeries. Mesh reduces the need for re-operation. However, there is an increased rate of long-term complications that partially offsets the benefit of using mesh. Complications related to the mesh can be very serious, such as bowel obstruction, perforation or bleeding; these usually require urgent surgery. However, symptoms also may be less specific, and include pain, non-healing wounds and infection. Of people with a mesh repair, 4% to 6% had evidence of complications after five years of follow-up, according to a well-done study from Denmark. I am aware of recalled mesh products (49 out of the top 50 results on a web search were from personal injury law firms; the 50th was from the Food and Drug Administration) and reports of significantly higher complication rates from recalled (as well as from counterfeit) mesh. Without knowing more about your health issues, it is difficult to weigh in on whether the mesh is likely to be causing it. There is no simple blood or imaging test that will give a definitive answer. However, if your symptoms are among those possibly related to mesh complication, it absolutely would be appropriate to have a discussion with your surgeon about the upsides and downsides of a re-operation. I would be cautious about recommending another surgery for an 83-year-old, unless the symptoms are significant and your surgeon feels they are likely due to mesh complications. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up.
CHRISTMAS AUCTION at BONTRAGER’S AUCTION CENTER 4 mi. west of Batavia, 1/2 mi. south of Rt. 33, 8975 Wortendyke Rd., Batavia, Wed., Dec. 18, 4:03 PM.

What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away. 4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule!

There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved:
AUCTION OF STORAGE UNITS for collection of unpaid storage fees, Wed., Dec. 18, 11 AM. Auction to be held at Batavia Self Storage, 45 Liberty St., Batavia, NY. Notice given to the following of units being sold: Jordan Roland - unit 0015; Lindsay Cooper - unit 0072. TERMS: Full payment auction day, 13% Buyer’s Premium, 3% discount for cash or good check.
• 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3 • 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4 • 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5 • Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6 • Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7 Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8
8975 Wortendyke Rd., Batavia, NY 14020 Auction Center Office • (585) 343-4529 www.bontragerauction.com
To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign.

Prepare a familiar dish. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easy on themselves by choosing dishes they’ve made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely won’t require as much time to prepare. ●

“Not what we give, but what we share, for the gift without the giver is bare…”
~ James Russell Lowell Because the wise men brought gifts to the Infant King, we continue to celebrate Christmas by giving gifts. Gifts for children delight both the child and the donor. The child may not fully understand why he is being given so much but his enjoyment is always obvious and reward enough for the gift-giver. Where gifts are just expected and accepted as a matter of course, there is a real danger that the true spirit of giving will be lost. Let us try to give a bit of ourselves with every gift. Our entire staff wishes you and your family a Christmas that is not only significant, but Merry as well.

Christmas at Clarissa’s Hours: Friday-Sunday, 11am-4pm
Clarissa’s Country Cupboard 5839 Merrill Rd. Byron • (585) 409-1374
WHEATLAND SENIOR CENTER 889-1284 December 16-December 20 Monday: Roast Ham w/Raisin Sauce Tuesday: Senior Center Closed Wednesday: Chili
Thursday: Steak Diane Friday: Senior Center Closed
Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes. 3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s:

Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday. EMPLOYMENT

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task. Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money. How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment. You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Make your holiday preparations one step at a time in order to avoid being overwhelmed and leaving things undone. That confusing family situation continues to work itself out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Ease this year’s holiday money pressures by letting your thrifty side guide you as you look for those perfect gifts that typically reflect your good taste and love of beauty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ll have a good handle on potential holiday problems if you delegate tasks to family members, friends or co-workers -- most of whom will be more than happy to help out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Right now you are especially vulnerable to holiday scams that seek to take advantage of your generosity. Best advice: Check them out before you send out your checks. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The upcoming holiday season gives the Big Cat much to purr about. Relationships grow stronger, and new opportunities loom on the horizon, just waiting to be pounced on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A changing situation brings conflicting advice about how to go forward with your holiday plans. Your best bet: Make the decision you feel most comfortable with. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Holiday plans get back on track after some confusion about the direction you expected to take. A potentially troublesome money matter needs your immediate attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your holiday preparations are on track. But you need to confront a personal situation while you can still keep it from overwhelming everything else. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Tight financial matters ease a bit during this holiday season. But the sagacious Sagittarian is well-advised to keep a tight hold on the reins while shopping for gifts. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Don’t put off making decisions about this year’s holiday celebrations, despite the negative comments you’ve been getting from several quarters. Do it NOW! AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The holidays will bring new friends and new opportunities. Meanwhile, be careful to use your energy wisely as you go about making holiday preparations. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) There’s good news coming from a most unlikely source. And it could turn out to be one of the best holiday gifts you have had in years. Remember to stay positive. BORN THIS WEEK: You are respected for your honesty and loyalty. You make friends slowly -- but with rare exceptions, they’re in your life forever.
