1 cup granulated sugar, plus more for rolling cookies
¾ cup butter, at room temperature
1 egg
3 Tbsp molasses
2 cups flour, sifted
1 tsp baking soda
1 ½ tsp ground ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp each salt, ground cloves, & freshly ground nutmeg
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp lemon juice
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, cream 1 cup granulated sugar with butter until light & fluffy, about 3 minutes. Mix in egg & molasses. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking soda & spices. Add to butter mixture & blend well. Fill a shallow bowl with granulated sugar. Break off walnut-size pieces of dough & roll into balls; roll balls in sugar.
Arrange on greased cookie sheets & bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Transfer to cooling racks. Meanwhile, make glaze: Combine powdered sugar with 1 Tbsp water & stir until smooth, then stir in lemon juice. Drizzle glaze over cookies.

HOW TO MASTER SHOPPING EARLY FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Begin with a plan. Holiday shopping excursions, whether they take place in town, at the mall or online, can take longer than expected when shoppers have no idea what they’re looking for. Prior to your first holiday shopping trip, jot down gift ideas for each person on your list. Then scour stores or websites for those items. Starting early affords shoppers time to bargain hunt and ensures supply shortages or other issues won’t get in the way of a happy loved one come the holiday season.

Truffes au Chocolat
Makes 20 to 24 truffles
1 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons super fine sugar
1 tablespoon Cointreau or Armagnac (optional) good quality cocoa powder
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Scant 1/2 pound dark chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa solids
Scald the cream with the sugar by just bringing to the boil and then removing from the heat immediately. Whisk in the chocolate piece by piece until you have a smooth emulsion. Allow to cool slightly then whisk in the butter, again in pieces, followed by the alcohol if you are using it. Chill the mixture in the freezer 20 minutes.
Now stir the mixture well and, using either two teaspoons if you are dexterous or your fingers if you don’t mind getting messy, fashion the truffles into small balls. Place on parchment paper or foil on a baking sheet and put in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or so. Roll well in the cocoa powder and leave in the refrigerator at least overnight before serving.
Did You Know? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiffness, swelling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. While psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slowly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis will not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis.Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those who have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

SHOPPING LOCALLY
earned money. Your local merchant is working just as hard to earn your money. And when you choose to not support your local merchant and shop outside your community or county, you’ve robbed yourself of the benefits of your money staying where you live.
THINK LOCAL, especially at this gi ing time of year. Make it a Merry Christmas for all of us because, ‘it matters!’
businesses was more important than getting the best deals. That may be due to the feeling of helping out a fellow neighbor.
Create job opportunities
Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, along with their employees. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. That’s also true in Canada, where 68.8 percent of the total labor force works for a small business. A person may never know when he or she - or a relative - will need a job. Keeping small businesses viable provides a strong job market for locals.
Keep more money in the community
The Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. Spend the same $100 at a national retailer and only $14 stays.
Enjoy a more local flavor
National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization, but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small businesses may also be more inclined to work with local vendors and start-ups than national companies that have global supply chains.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.
When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves
• 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf
• 2 cups half-and-half
• 4 egg yolks
• 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2)
1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
4
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.
3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.
4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.
Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.
Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Liver Specialist Recommends Removing Cyst Growing in Size
WHEN SEDATION IS NECESSARY FOR DENTAL WORK
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with several liver cysts over 15 years ago. My primary doctor and I followed the growth of the cysts by ultrasound, and one is increasing in size. We did an MRI with and without contrast to take a look at the cyst. The radiologist stated that the cyst looked “complex” and, for a lack of a better word, unusual.
A liver specialist’s consult revealed that we could remove it if I wanted to. The doctor stated that he just had a patient who had a cyst, and it was cancerous. He felt that it may be best to remove it, but it’s not urgent to do so.
I would appreciate your take on this situation. -- L.S.
ANSWER: Simple liver cysts are common, and even when they are large, they do not need to be removed unless they cause symptoms. However, any other cyst than a simple one needs to be carefully evaluated. There are many possible causes, including various types of cancer, especially a mucinous cystic neoplasm, which can be associated with invasive cancer.
I looked at both the ultrasound and MRI reports you sent, and although it seemed to me that the radiologists thought this was likely a simple cyst with some bleeding, they could not be sure. Furthermore, the growth in the size of the cyst is concerning. In some cases, it’s reasonable to wait and redo the scans in 6-12 months when the risk of a cancerous cyst is low. However, since the liver specialist (who has much more experience than I do) is concerned enough to recommend surgery, I don’t understand why you would want to wait. I suspect the surgery will prove that it was a benign cyst, but you’ll probably sleep better at night once you know for certain. The surgery is normally done laparascopically, and although it’s usually a very safe and effective surgery, there is always a small risk for complications. You should speak with a surgeon.
DR. ROACH WRITES: Do you have any comments on the use of metformin for weight loss and prediabetes? I am a 57-yearold woman. -- B.S.
ANSWER: Factor V is a protein that is critical in making clots, and an abnormThat’s one question I can answer based on very good data. The National Diabetes Prevention Program looked at this very issue. Subjects in the study (who averaged 51 years of age and were overweight with prediabetes) were treated with metformin, an intensive lifestyle-behavioral-change program that aimed for a low-fat diet and 150 minutes of exercise per week, or a placebo. The diet and exercise group had the best response, decreasing the rate of new diabetes by 58% compared to the placebo group. However, the metformin group also had a benefit, with a 31% decrease in the rate of new diabetes diagnoses. Personally, I recommend both. Metformin does help a bit with weight loss, but taking it along with some diet changes and exercise would likely have a much better response than metformin alone. We don’t recommend a low-fat diet anymore, instead emphasizing whole fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and very few processed foods. A registered dietician would be a valuable partner in helping with the diet of your regimen. You don’t need to exercise for the whole 150 minutes, but it’s a goal you can work toward. New studies show that drugs like semaglutide are even more effective at preventing diabetes, but they are very expensive and often not covered by insurance.
Most routine dental procedures can be done using local anesthetic to numb the pain. For more involved procedures, and for severe dental anxiety, a dentist may use intravenous sedation for a deeper level of relaxation. In dentistry, IV sedation is called “conscious sedation dentistry” or “twilight sleep” because, although the patient is technically awake, they feel no pain and often have no memory of the procedure. Different levels of IV sedation are used for different procedures and patients. Mild sedation allows the dentist and patient to communicate during the procedure. Moderate sedation may cause the patient to fall asleep and have little memory. Deep sedation causes the patient to sleep through the procedure with no memory of the event.
No matter what your oral concerns may be, we want you to be comfortable coming to our office. We try to make all our patients’ visits as relaxing as possible. If you are hesitant about visiting the dentist and haven’t done so in a while, we invite you to call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL and find out how satisfying, rewarding, and even life-changing a visit to the dentist can be. For full-service, patient-friendly dental care in a comfortable atmosphere, make an appointment today at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246
P.S. So-called “twilight sleep” caused by IV sedation is a type of amnesia that blocks pain by causing the temporary inability to form new memories.

ARCH pain?
HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS
is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.
• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

CANNABIS AND CANCER-RELATED PAIN
The National Cancer Institute notes that, while more research is necessary, small studies have indicated the potential benefits of cannabis in helping cancer patients overcome the pain associated with their disease. According to the NCI, a small study of 21 patients with chronic pain who combined vaporized cannabis with morphine experienced improved pain relief compared to patients who took only morphine. However, combining vaporized cannabis with oxycodone, a narcotic pain reliever and cough suppressant that is similar to morphine, did not produce significantly greater pain relief. In addition, two small studies indicated that delta-9-THC, the main active cannabinoid in marijuana, helped to relieve pain as well as nausea and vomiting. A second study indicated that delta-9-THC given in doses could provide pain relief similar to that provided by codeine, a pain-relieving drug derived from morphine. The NCI also cites a study that indicated a cannabis plant extract medicine effectively relieved pain when sprayed under the tongue of advanced cancer patients whose pain was not relieved by strong opioids alone. That study also indicated that some patients were able to continue to control their cancer-related pain without needing higher doses of the cannabis spray or higher doses of other pain medications they were taking.

Reviving the Magic:
Jim DeLooze’s Joy Project Brings Christmas Spirit to LeRoy
BY SUZIE WELLS
For Jim DeLooze of LeRoy, Christmas has always embodied joy, magic, and wonder... qualities he hopes to bring to the entire community through his ambitious project, “ e Joy Project.” Inspired by holiday traditions that once lit up Sibley’s department store in Rochester, DeLooze brings his passion for classic Christmas displaystodowntownLeRoy,hopingitwillevokethesameexcitement Sibley’s once did.
With a huge Christmas village and train display, “department store windows” with animatronics and accompanying story, and hand-painted murals of Christmases of yesteryear by local artist, Lorie Longhany (funded by a grant from GoArt! [Genesee Orleans Regional Arts Council]), DeLooze’s display harkens to Sibley’s decades-long holiday spectacle, enticing visitors to enter Toyland and the Enchanted Tunnel to see iconic animatronic characters.
For years, DeLooze has been creating his own train set, posting photos and videos on social media to share the joy. He feels happy when he puts a smile on people’s faces or brightens their day with the holiday spirit. He’s excited to share the project in a broader way through the display in LeRoy.
e Joy Project consists of two main displays at St. Mark’s Church Exhibit Hall. e first is a diorama based on e Cinnamon Bear, an iconic 1937 holiday radio show DeLooze still listens to each year. is beloved series follows Judy and Jimmy Barton on an adventure with e Cinnamon Bear, Santa Claus’s assistant, as they search for a lost Silver Star tree ornament in the magical world of Maybeland. is beloved classic has maintained a dedicated following, with radio stations and streaming services still broadcasting it each Christmas.
e Joy Project is set to open to the public from November 30 through December 22, Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. While bringing this project to life has been a dream for DeLooze, he acknowledges the journey was far from simple. Transporting the diorama from Chicago posed a logistical challenge for DeLooze and St. Mark’s. Yet, the community’s response to his requests for donations and volunteer help has been “unbelievable.” According to DeLooze, “ e Penny Saver played a big role in getting this project going: From a simple ask for donations of Christmas houses in the Give and Take column, the community’s response was
DeLooze, a lifelong fan of e Cinnamon Bear, secured the diorama a er connecting with its previous Chicago owner, whose family had cherished it for generations. Tony, son of the diorama’s builder, chose DeLooze as the diorama’s recipient because of DeLooze’s commitment to preserving the spirit of e Cinnamon Bear, inviting people to come see it free of charge.
Accompanying e Cinnamon Bear diorama is DeLooze’s own recreation of the Sibley’s Christmas display, which he has been dreaming of for nearly 40 years. Inspired by his memories of being taken to Sibley’s as a child, Jim cra ed miniature Christmas scenes in his home for his grandchildren over the past eight years. “When Sibley’s closed in the mid-80s,” he says, “I lost a very important tradition and realized my children and grandchildren would never get to experience that.” Now, with his public display at St. Mark’s, he hopes to rekindle this piece of holiday magic for the community.
DeLooze’s project is fueled by two goals: spreading joy and fosteringtradition.Asheexplains,“Fortheoldergenerations, wehope to rekindle memories of the old-time Christmas store decorations of the ‘50s and ‘60s. For the younger generations, we hope to help families make new traditions.” His vision includes drawing visitors from far and wide.
Looking ahead, DeLooze hopes e Joy Project will become a fixture of LeRoy’s holiday season, with families returning year a er year to share in the Christmas spirit, saying, “Hopefully, it will become a Christmas tradition parents and grandparents will look forwardtobringingtheirchildrentosee.” roughhiswork,DeLooze aims to capture the same magic that made Sibley’s a destination for generations past, creating a place where Christmas spirit can thrive in LeRoy.

Patience is indeed a virtue. “All things come to he who waits” is an old adage that few will dispute. It’s exciting to watch sheer power in action…the forces of nature, for example, can be awesome. But it is the patient, gentle rain rather than the almighty hurricane that makes things grow.
The most powerful tyrants of history have eventually fallen to more patient forces of moderation. And, although few of us will ever wield impressive power, every one of us is capable of being patient…a characteristic everyone can, and should, develop.

Thank you, farmers!
Exiting thru handicap parking
In the world of supermarkets and deliveries, I just want to say thank you to the farmers and farmettes who share of their abundance with their neighbors. Farm stands are a cool great way to buy produce and eggs (even meat sometimes, depending on the farmer) directly from the people who grow it or tend to it. I’ll miss my local farm market for the winter, but I hope you all enjoy a restful respite with your families and friends. I’m sure the season is long and grueling. Please know your neighbors greatly appreciate your hard work!
I would like drivers to know that "cutting thru" the yellow hash markings in the handicap parking areas is illegal. Not that anyone worries about tickets anymore, but what about taking someone's car door off, or worse hitting someone in one of the store’s electric shopping carts. Please use the designated exiting lanes. You've come too close to hitting me or my car door too many times.
Signs for Roundabouts
Young people thank you
I want to thank the young people that are working in the stores where we shop. If you’re not aware, there is a shortage of young workers. I do not take my change from the cashiers but leave it in the hope that they will receive it as a small thank you for their willing to work rather than stay home or on the phone. I would much rather donate to someone I know is helping me and moving forward in life than having the money go to some six figure income executive in a so-called “charitable” organization.
I wish NYS would put signs up at all entrances going into a roundabouts stating that you need to signal your intent when you go into one. I have seen several close calls because people don't signal their intent. It is the law.
About half of all Americans say it doesn’t matter how people greet them around the holidays, with “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” being non-preferential.
Spring, summer, and fall fill us with hope; winter alone reminds us of the human condition. ~ Mignon McLaughlin, The SecondNeurotic’sNotebook,1966

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Marzotta
INTRODUCING A NEW PET TO YOUR CAT
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently adopted a year-old puppy. “Max” is a friendly, well-socialized dog, and during the trial stay a month ago, my 10-year-old cat, “Nora,” seemed to tolerate him. Well, on the second day that Max was home, he started barking excitedly. Nora sprang up and attacked him, cornering Max on the sofa. She batted him around the snout several times. Now, Max slinks out of the room anytime that Nora appears. How can I make peace between them?
-- Gerry G., Manchester, New Hampshire
DEAR GERRY: I’m sorry to hear that! Introducing a new pet into an established household can be stressful for both pets and sometimes unpredictable. And any negative interactions that occur -- from hissing and barking to an all-out boxing match -- can make future harmony nearly impossible to achieve. One or both pets may begin to exhibit behavioral issues like aggression, soiling in the house, chewing and scratching, and more.
For the foreseeable future, you’ll need to manage and monitor all interactions between Max and Nora. As soon as they begin to react negatively, they need to be separated.
Reintroduce the two gradually. I recommend taking Max for a nice, long walk before each meeting so that some of his puppy energy is worked off beforehand. Work intensively with Max on basic commands like sit, stay, lie down and come here. When Max is in the room with Nora, have him sit or lie down close to you -- they don’t have to meet face to face. Limit interaction time to five minutes or less at first, then gradually increase the time.

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR
Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames.
According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.
• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.
• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.
• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.
• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.
• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.
WAYS TO IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALL YEAR LONG
As winter wears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold weather climates to experience some cabin fever. Winter weather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear.
In addition to contributing to cabin fever, winter weather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. While air pollution is something most often associated with densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long winters when windows are often closed for months at a time. Though open windows in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are ways to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of which season it happens to be.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER
I
One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of falls is to improve lighting around the home. The National Institutes of Health state that adequate lighting is important at entrances to the home, stairways, hallways, and other frequently traversed areas. Make sure lighting fixtures are using the highest wattage light bulb allowed. Artificial lighting sources become even more vital in fall and autumn, when natural light is less abundant in a home. In addition, install lighting outdoors by the front door, over the garage and where garbage pails are stored to facilitate safe passage.

DID YOU KNOW?
Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memoryofthedigitsattheendofthetask.Mostparticipants’performance declinedconsiderablyoverthecourseofthe50-minutetask.However,the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS
Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more.
A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.
AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS
Live off of cash reserves first. Before cashing in investments or retirement accounts, tap your emergency fund first. If you have any tangible assets, like an unused car or a boat sitting idle, sell these items for cash to tide you over.
