FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2019
By Clement Clarke Moore 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN! On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!
Our Gift to You… Merry Christmas GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE
David L. Johnson, Jr. December 7, 2019
(NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food.
Avon: Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at the age of 82. He was in the comfort of his own home in Avon, NY surrounded by many loved ones. Dave was born on February 5, 1937 in Batavia, NY to the late David Sr. and Gladys (Coral) Johnson. After graduating from Pavilion School in 1955, Dave enlisted in the United States Army. He was first stationed in Bischofsgrun, Germany where he met the love of his life, Inge, and married on February 1, 1958. After marriage, he was transferred to Frankfurt, Germany. Dave reenlisted for an additional three years at Fort Ord, California. After proudly serving our country for six years, he was honorably discharged as a Specialist 5 “SP5”.
Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions.
After the Army, Dave, Inge, and their children moved back to New York. He then worked for Lapp Insulator for two years. In 1968 he began his career as Lead Operator of the Avon Waste Water Treatment Plant and retired in 1995. After retirement, Dave and Inge enjoyed traveling south every winter, visiting family and friends. Through the years, David was very active in his community. He was a longtime member of Avon Lions Club and Avon American Legion 294. He enjoyed participating in the Avon Corn Festival, selling Poppies, and ringing the bell for the Red Kettle Campaign. For a short period he volunteered as a driver for the Avon Ambulance.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 2nd, 2020 at Lakeview Cemetery, Groveland, NY with military honors. Immediately following the cemetery service, a Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at 1pm at the Avon Veterans Hall, 5480 Avon E. Avon Road, Rte. 5 & 20, Avon, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Avon American Legion Post 294, PO Box 132, Avon, NY 14414 or the Avon Lions Club, PO Box 293, Avon, NY 14414. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 28, 1793, British-born American revolutionary Thomas Paine, author of “Common Sense,” is arrested in France for treason, having been tried in absentia and convicted. Paine was imprisoned in a former palace, where he had a large room with windows and catered meals.
What is a standby generator? No one wants to imagine losing power in their homes. But homeowners and renters face such situations every day. For those who aren’t prepared to confront power outages, doing so can be a nuisance in the best of situations, and potentially very dangerous, if not fatal, in the most dire instances. Thankfully, no one has to go long without power. Standby generators are backup electrical systems that operate automatically. Once the generator senses a power loss, which can occur within seconds of a utility outage, its automatic transfer switch essentially gives the generator a wakeup call, commanding it to begin supplying power to the circuits in a home. Some transfer switches may be automated, requiring no effort on the part of homeowners when the power goes out. Others may need to be flipped on like one might flip a light switch. Seniors and/or people with mobility issues may benefit from standby generators with automated transfer switches, as they may find it difficult to manually turn the switches themselves. That’s especially true if the power goes out overnight, when visibility inside a home with no power is compromised. Standby generators are typically connected to the circuits throughout a home, which means they can kick in and run HVAC systems, refrigerators and security systems, among other devices. That helps people stay comfortable and sleep well during power outages, while also ensuring they won’t have to throw away any groceries or spend times in their homes without functioning security systems. Standby generators can help people prepare for and overcome storms and natural disasters, making them an invaluable addition to any home. TF201602 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* On Dec. 24, 1851, a fire sweeps through the Library of Congress and destroys two-thirds of Thomas Jefferson’s personal literary collection. Jefferson had sold his personal library of 6,487 books to Congress after the British burned the Congressional library in 1814. * On Dec. 23, 1888, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, suffering from severe depression, cuts off the lower part of his left ear with a razor. He later documented the event in a painting titled “Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear.”

HOLIDAY FUN FACTS “Jingle Bells” originally was a Thanksgiving song, and it was first performed by composer/organist James Lord Pierpont at his church’s Thanksgiving concert.
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your love of the holidays creates a special bond between you and the people in your life. Use this as a way of building stronger relationships that will carry over well beyond this time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new approach could go a long way toward resolving a painful estrangement, especially at this holiday time. And since your aspects favor friendship this week, why not go ahead and try it? GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your positives continue to dominate, and any negative factors that squeeze in can be dealt with easily. The secret is to tackle them at once and not allow them to benefit by your neglect. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Good news: A colleague’s remarks could help you move toward ultimately resolving that persistent workplace situation. Meanwhile, enjoy the holidays with loved ones. LEO (July 23 to August 22) No one reflects the bright holiday more than all you Leos and Leonas who love the shimmer and glimmer of the season. P.S.: There just might be a very special something from Santa. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Celebrate the holidays by being more receptive to new experiences. Overriding the Virgo reluctance to try new things could be the best gift you’ve given yourself in a long while. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good news about a loved one makes the holidays even more festive. Expect some unexpected gifts, so be prepared with a few nicely wrapped packages of goodies to offer in return. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The holiday season provides an opportunity to meet new people, some of whom you might even consider “worthy” enough to join the Scorpio’s select group of friends. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You always bring your own wonderful sparkle and light to the holidays, and don’t be surprised if this year someone special reaches out to respond to your warmth in kind. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Togetherness is the dominant theme for the Goat’s holiday celebrations this year. That means reaching out to bring everyone you care for into your very own special circle of light. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A reminder of a very special moment from the past makes the holidays more memorable for the romantic Aquarian. New friendships hold the promise of a romantic future as well. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting into the swim of things for all you partyloving Pisceans is easy enough this holiday season. And, of course, you can expect to impress people wherever you go. BORN THIS WEEK: Your dedication brings you the success you strive for, and your generosity impels you to reach out and help others on their way up.

ACROSS CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history. Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits. Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky. While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

THE ART OF
Christmas Present 2020 is set to be a big year for my family, including moving, marriage, babies and all of those other “life changing” events that allow you to adjust your health insurance. In fact, every time I have started to write this piece, I have put “Christmas 2020,” only to facepalm and delete it. My mind seems to already be living in the new year. Still, I never noticed how true this was until I almost missed the excitement in my four-year-old’s voice when he mentioned decorating for Christmas 2019 and the wonder in my seven-year-old’s eyes as we lit up this year’s decorations. I suddenly realized holiday traditions had become perfunctory, its films obligatory. Christmas spirit itself had been postponed until 2020. (Please note we wish all of our readers happy holidays for whatever special day they celebrate!) It’s too easy to live our everyday lives with our minds in the future. The new year is being heralded as a one of clarity, 20/20 representing perfect vision. It is also said that hindsight is 20/20. We are living in that hindsight right now. While this saying is usually taken to mean one’s perspective is most clear on life after the fact, does it have to be? Can’t that clarity be experienced in the here and now? If you find yourself keeping company with the spirits of the Past or Future, these tried-and-true holiday resolutions might just help you embrace Christmas Present and reawaken your Christmas Spirit.
BY AMANDA DUDEK
Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment. Take 100 photos; take 1,001 photos! Take them while the tree is lopsided and your hair’s a mess, after the kids dressed themselves and before you lose those ten pounds. Waiting for the perfect “now” means waiting for the perfect “never,” because you and your family are real, and perfection isn’t. Beauty is in every imperfect moment lived together with love. So snap, snap, snap–and don’t filter! Put your phone on pause. Switch to airplane mode so you can take a break from calls, texts and social media. Free yourself from distractions so that you can embrace what is in front of you right now. Look your children in the eye and let them know they have your undivided attention, that they are important. Don’t “unplug,” though, because all those twinkling lights have to draw power from somewhere! Slow down. It is said often – and it is good advice, especially at Christmas – that we all need to step away from the busyness of life from time to time. Set aside that list of holiday must-haves and to-dos and experience the holidays through the eyes of a child, whether your own or your grandchildren, nieces, nephews or a friend’s. Admire the light displays and examine the presents under the tree together. Build the anticipation and fuel the imagination. Encourage acts of kindness and generosity. Share favorite songs and stories from your childhood. Make holiday favorites. There is something special about preparing foods for the holidays, whether it is rolling the dough for sugar cookies or balancing the mix for a fantastic mulled cider. This literally hands-on approach draws all your senses into the experience. It is hard to be anywhere else when you are surrounded by the delicious fragrance of cinnamon. Choose wisely. Some traditions are meant to live on; others not so much. Trying to do it all is neither possible nor enjoyable, so focus on what is most meaningful to you and your family.

Quality Sleep To help you feel your best and sleep more soundly, try the following tips: Take a shower – About 90 minutes before bedtime, take a hot bath or shower. This will help to reduce muscle tension & accelerate sleep onset. Create an electronics curfew – The blue light from your favorite electronic devices interrupts your ability to relax and fall asleep. Don’t use your smartphone, tablet and other digital devices for one hour before bed. Stretch to relax – Stretching for 10-15 minutes before bed will help reduce muscle tension. Turn down noises and do some gentle stretches to relax the muscles and mind. Set a wake-up schedule – Try to wake up at the same time each morning, even on the weekends. This will help keep your internal clock ticking correctly so you can fall asleep more quickly and sleep deeply. Embrace natural light – About 15 minutes of sunlight each morning will help reset your circadian rhythm so you can rise more naturally and then sleep better in the evenings.

TEETH AS WHITE AS SNOW? Teeth-whitening procedures are popular among people who want to get rid of stains that prevent teeth from looking their whitest. By removing discolorations caused by coffee, tea, tobacco, wine, etc., the dentist can make patients’ teeth between two to nine shades lighter. The final results depend on each person’s natural tooth color, which is largely dependent on the color of the tooth pulp. The “pulp” (or “pulp chamber”) is the soft area within the center of the tooth that contains the nerve, blood vessels, and connective tissue. It is darker and less transparent than enamel. For this reason, teeth-whitening cannot get teeth “as white as snow.” However, even a change of two to three shades makes a noticeable difference. Enhance your appearance so

or uncommon issues that might be expected in a pregnancy at age 57? I am overall very healthy, with no issues other than slightly elevated LDL. I have not gone through menopause. I had four full-term pregnancies, the last at age 35 (after which I had my tubes tied), and no miscarriages. I asked my doctor two years ago if I would have an issue being a surrogate and was told there was no reason I couldn’t be, but my current physician told me that it can be very dangerous at my age. I am concerned that the practice is just covering itself against any liability. I realize that this is my decision alone and I would not hold my doctors accountable, but I’d also like the real truth regarding any potential issues I would be likely to encounter. I appreciate your thoughts. -- M.V. ANSWER: I admire your willingness to consider being a surrogate. However, the risks of pregnancy in a 57-year-old woman are significant. A study from the U.K. from 2016 quantified the risks pretty thoroughly; however, of the 233 women studied, only two of them were older than 57, so your risks are probably higher than the average risk for an older mother in the study (which was defined here as 48 years or older at the date of delivery). Before I go over the risks, let me point out that one major risk for older mothers, Down syndrome, may not apply, since the ovum (egg) you would be carrying would come from another woman and it is her age that determines the risk for the fetus. Older mothers also are more likely to carry twins (or more than two fetuses). Compared with younger mothers, older mothers have a higher risk for: high blood pressure during pregnancy (15% vs. 5%); pre-eclampsia, also called toxemia (6% vs. 2%); diabetes during pregnancy (18% vs. 4%); hemorrhage after delivery (26% vs. 15%); Caesarean section (78% vs. 33%); preterm delivery (22% vs. 8%); and admission of the baby to the intensive care unit (3% vs. less than 1%). Miscarriage rate (after 11 weeks) in women over 55 is estimated to be about 10%, compared with 1% in younger women. Maternal death is much more likely for older women than younger; however, that risk is small, less than 2 per 1,000 in a separate Swedish study of mothers over 45. Overall, these risks are not small. You should think through your risks before making a decision. I’m disappointed in the lack of advice you received. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: The 71-year-old woman from a recent column who finds sticking her finger to test her blood glucose too painful to be willing to do it likely was never told that while sticking her finger at the tip IS painful, sticking at the side of the end of the finger is barely painful, if at all. I find myself surprised that those who stick fingers for blood at the hospital don’t seem to know this either. Shame on them. -- R.S. ANSWER: There are more nerve endings at the tip of the finger, so that is more painful for most. There often is better blood flow on the sides as well. Thank you for writing with this reminder. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Quality and integrity-guaranteed! HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Stay on top of your home. M uch like older vehicles, older homes require a little extra TLC on the part of homeow ners. Don’t allow your home to fall into disrepair. Even if your energy bills are not on the rise, inspect w indow s and doors to make sure they are closing tightly, as over time such seemingly minor problems can add up to substantial energy loss. Don’t forget to clean gutters and dow nspouts, removing debris that can add up and lead to w ater damage that may ultimately compromise the effectiveness of your home’s insulation.

111 CEDAR St. • BATAVIA • 585-343-4899 www.cedarstreetonline.com HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On the coldest night in December, our horses decided to take an unaccompanied run through Churchville all the way down Chisholm lane. I want to thank all who helped in their capture and return home. From the anonymous drivers who moved their cars so they could not run on the expressway, and those drivers who stopped and turned their lights off, so they did not frighten them. The Sheriffs who responded were wonderful, from holding our horses as we gathered saddles to ride them home, to stopping traffic so that we could take them safely on rRoute 36 and back over the expressway. If it was not for the kindness of strangers, our animals would not have made it home in one piece and uninjured! Thank you and have a wonderful holiday. PS We apologize for the hoof prints!

Thank you, Lighthouse Wesleyan Church, for the special honor you gave to our country’s Veterans. It was very moving to see each of the Veterans receive a handmade quilt and to see the children and teens “fist-bump” a hero. To all Veterans and their families, thank you for the sacrifices you gave to our country to help preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day. Our Veterans and their families are true heroes! A recent writer wrote "imagine having a neighbor who doesn't think it's necessary to keep his lawn mowed". That is a big assumption! Were it not for my neighbors, my lawn would be unmowed most of the year. Not because I don't care, but because I am unable to do it, nor can I afford to hire someone. When I was able to take care of my lawn, it was very well taken care of and I had beautiful flower beds. I am no longer able to do that, and I miss doing it. Don't always assume the worst!

I was dreading having to go to the DMV to renew my driver’s license. I went to the Fairport mobile office and was pleasantly surprised! Not only were the staff there friendly and helpful, it took me less than 30 minutes to get through the process. I had, of course, looked online prior to my visit and gathered all the needed materials and filled out the forms. I was a little nervous when I arrived to see so many people waiting, but the way the staff handled the process it went very quickly and smoothly. Thank you Fairport Mobile DMV! A Big Thank You to all the women of Zion Church, of Avon, for the lovely silver tea on Sunday 12/8/19. It was very enjoyable.

In the late afternoon of Sunday, December 8th, I was visiting the Rush Cemetery to pay my respects. When I started to leave, I realized my car could not get off an icy spot. I was stuck. After many failed attempts to free the car, I was about to walk to town when out of the dark appeared a truck bearing a compassionate couple who lent more than a hand: sage advice, skilled driving, muscle power and determination. Yes, two guardian angels from Scottsville gifted me with their greatly appreciated care and assistance. Thank you both and may you experience many blessings throughout the new year. Suzanne Thank you to the people of Avon who organized the Holiday Happenings.

Stocking Guessing Game Fill a stocking with small toys and Christmas items, for example, a candy cane, bell, small car, or pinecone. Let the kids feel the stocking and try to identify the contents. The child with the most correct guesses is the winner.
Jingle Bell Tossing
That Present Is Mine!
Adhere ten plastic cups in a “bowling pin” triangle on a heavy piece of cardboard with hot glue. Provide small jingle bells purchased at the dollar store for kids to toss into the cups. For older children, let them play in teams or pairs. Whoever gets the most jingle bells in the cup wins.
Have each kid bring a lightly used toy wrapped as a Christmas gift. After the children sit in a circle, randomly choose a kid to start this game by picking out a present for themselves. They unwrap the gift, and the next child has the option of taking the gift already opened or choose one from the other wrapped presents.

BATAVIA • 2 State St. • 343-8150 SCORE GREAT DEALS THIS SEASON Make purchases with a cash-back credit card. Consumers who trust themselves to pay their credit card balances in full each month can use cash-back cards to enhance their savings. Such cards reward consumers with cash back that’s equal to a percentage of each purchase made with their cards. For example, a 2 percent cash-back card will return $2 to consumers for every $100 they spend using their cash-back card. While using these cards won’t do much to combat crowds, shoppers might be happy to wait on line knowing that their deals will prove even more rewarding than advertised.

GIFT-WRAPPING TIPS AND TRICKS Color- or pattern-code gifts It’s easy to visualize who gets what gift when each recipient has his or her own special wrapping paper. This is also a handy idea when wrapping gifts from Santa, as it will differentiate the Santa gifts from the ones being given by Mom and Dad.
May peace, joy, harmony and contentment visit your home during this special time of year. We are sincerely grateful for your continued friendship. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

GIFTS THAT PAMPER AND REJUVENATE Stress can be bad for the body, contributing to depression, anxiety, hypertension, and even obesity. Unfortunately, more than half of working adults and 47 percent of all Americans say they are concerned with the amount of stress in their lives, according to a survey from the American Psychological Association. Canadians, too, are feeling stressed. The North American research company Ipsos found that stress affects 76 percent of the Canadian population. Reducing stress can be especially important during the holiday season, which, thanks in part to its hectic nature, tends to produce extra feelings of stress. Gifts that pamper, relax and rejuvenate might be the ideal fit for those who need a little rest and relaxation.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES MADE SIMPLE Use a cookie mix. Who says you have to toil and make cookies from scratch? It’s the thought that counts, and any number of creative recipes can begin by utilizing a premade baking mix. These mixes already have most of the dry cookie ingredients sifted together, including flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar. All you have to do is add the wet ingredients and any extra embellishments to make the mix your own. If mixes are too much work, purchase refrigerated or frozen cookie dough. Include your own add-ins, such as nuts, white chocolate chips, bits of dried fruit, or crumbled candy canes, to give the premade dough a unique flavor. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

POLL HI! Our names are
Merlin and Zeus. We both love to go sleighing in the winter. We also love to play ball. And go on hikes. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS (NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season. “Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work. • Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month. • Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them. • Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them.
During the holidays, treats and goodies abound. Which seasonal specialty are you most looking forward to this season?
• Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family.
• Candy canes • Cut-Out cookies • Eggnog • Gingerbread • Hot mulled cider
• Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home.
• Keep portable generators outside and away from the home.
• Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year.
Poll Ends 12-24-19 Results From 12-17-19 On Tuesday, December 10th, House Democratic leaders announced their two articles of impeachment against President Trump. Will these be enough to impeach him? 11% Yes, definitely 89% No, absolutely not We love hearing from you! Vote and make your voice be heard!
• Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source. • Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets. • If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequately watered and get rid of it after Christmas or when it gets dry. Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departments across the country are looking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members. “The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.” Training is provided by the department, and volunteers can serve in a variety of roles, from providing life-saving emergency response services to conducting fire prevention programs and disaster preparedness planning. Learn more and find a volunteer fire service opportunity by going to www.MakeMeAFirefighter.org.
