Appreciating the Oatka By Tim Malley
M
any times, in my wanderings through LeRoy, I come into contact with Oatka Creek. When I walk over the Oatka Bridge in LeRoy, I see just how beautiful the creek really is. The fall foliage that exists at this time of the year is just gorgeous, and when a blanket of snow covers the Oatka Creek area, it only enhances its loveliness.
Active Living 50+ ____________________24 Arts & Entertainment ____________________16
In fact, the Oatka, which means “leaving the highlands” or “approaching an opening” in the Seneca language, is so pretty that much of the undergrowth reminds one of the Appalachians with its rural atmosphere. It was the Erie and the Seneca nations which made their homes along what is now the Oatka. In the 17th century, the Seneca ultimately conquered the Erie, a peaceful people who were no match for the Seneca.

Oatka Creek has always been important to the people living in LeRoy. Every year in July, the Oatka Festival, a popular event with a carnivalesque atmosphere, is held along its banks and is designed to bring more business into LeRoy. All kinds of unique and delicious foods, fun games and even a rubber duck race on the creek make this event a local favorite.

Many different kinds of birds can be seen near its shores, including the blue jay, house finch, common crow and the turkey vulture which soars above the creek looking for carrion such as roadkill. This is not to mention the ever-present geese which seem to make their home in the Oatka area year-round, not bothering to fly south for the winter. Deer also frequent the creek’s sylvan shores. Nature is so bucolic and pristine in and around the Oatka it would have made naturalist John James Audubon proud. Visitors can view it directly across the street from the Woodward Library in LeRoy, which is a particularly beautiful area of the creek. With aesthetic values and a unique history one simply cannot find anywhere else, the Oatka truly is the personification of timeless beauty and intrigue. Enjoy this article? In 1793, Charles Wilbur established the first settlement in LeRoy along the Oatka which starts in Gainesville and eventually intersects with the Genesee River. Even then, Oatka Creek was a tributary important to LeRoy, containing a wide variety of fish and wildlife in and near its waters. Visitors can catch bass, northern pike and popular brown trout in the Oatka.

(NAPSI)—You may notice, when the weather turns colder, the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light on your dashboard lights up more frequently. The Car Care Council recommends checking your tire pressure regularly during the winter to help keep the TPMS light off and your vehicle safe. “It’s typical at this time of year for motorists to get TPMS warnings and then get worried about their tires,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Often drivers will see this in the morning when it’s coldest. If the temperature warms, the light could turn off but it’s likely that tires will still be a few pounds per square inch (PSI) underinflated. This is why it’s important to check tire pressure regularly.”
Additional Sponsors:
According to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, for every 10 degree drop in temperature, tire pressure decreases one to two PSI. Checking the tire pressure is important for vehicle safety, tire life and gas mileage.
LeRoy Historical Society H&R Block Falcone Funeral Home & Cremation Service Cameron Brady Funeral Home Stein Farms
Incorrect tire pressure can lower gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every one PSI drop in pressure of all four tires and improve fuel efficiency by up to 3.3 percent when the correct tire pressure is maintained.
A HUGE special thank you to the following community members/supporters: Lynne Belluscio, Rosalind & Donald Krenzer, Ged & Sandy Brady, Pat Navis, Barbara Elliott, Jake & Debbie Davis, Paul & Janet Demko, Orazio & Josephine Ferrara, Quentin & Joan Call
“Tire pressure should be checked at least monthly. It is important to note that newer cars with tire pressure monitoring systems may not alert you until the tire is significantly underinflated, so you may want to check it more frequently,” said White. “It is important to check tire pressure whenever there is a significant weather change and more often during the winter months.”
We have also had several donors who wished to remain anonymous, and we thank them as well.

NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE

Much of the world rings in the new year in grand fashion. Celebrations may include fireworks, concerts and, of course, champagne. But while there might be common elements to New Year’s celebrations regardless of geography, the parties can vary greatly depending on where celebrants happen to be.
TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Start small, but start immediately. Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals.

Local Sodus family needs a Christmas miracle On November 20th Michael Laird was rear ended in a horrible auto accident on Rt. 104 in the town of Williamson. Michael suffered multiple injuries and is paralyzed from the chest down. He is still in ICU on a ventilator. Michael and his wife are proud parents to 8-year-old triplets and a 6-month-old baby. Michael and his family need prayers of support from their community. In addition, a GoFundMe page is accepting donations to assist the family with Michael’s crushing medical bills and the family’s lost income. TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

ROBLEE Plumbing All types of plumbing 10991 Lake Road, Pavilion (585) 584-3841 CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Host responsibly. Even people who don’t intend to leave their homes can take steps to make New Year’s Eve safer for everyone. If you’re hosting a party at home, do so responsibly, making sure none of your guests overindulge and making the party less about drinking and more about having fun. Shift the focus from toasting drinks to games and activities that don’t include alcohol. Make sure to have plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages on hand and encourage people who are drinking to eat full meals and drink water throughout the night. People who fill up on food and water during the party may feel full, which may discourage them from having extra drinks. While many people will expect to drink alcohol on New Year’s Eve, don’t stock up on too much alcohol, the availability of which may encourage guests to overindulge. Hosts also should keep the phone numbers of local taxi services handy just in case some guests cannot drive themselves home safely.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Serving you has been a real treat for us, and we look forward to sharing more good times with you in the New Year. Thanks for your generous support. We wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a happy 2020!

SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The New Year brings challenges that can change many things in your life. You need to be prepared not only to confront them, but also to deal with what happens afterward. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for this New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den mate offers both wise and loving support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The New Year brings new opportunities for change. But you need to be ready to move from the comfortable status quo to the challenging unknown. It’s up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your most important New Year’s resolution should be to work out problems with a family member in order to avoid continuing misunderstandings. Do it soon, for both of your sakes. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The New Year has much to offer the intensely determined Scorpian, who isn’t afraid to take on challenges and stay with them until they surrender their rewards. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’ll have many fine opportunities in this New Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.” You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This New Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people feel safe and protected. You would make an excellent youth counselor. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

GRILLED CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATOES (NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill. Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.
Grilled Sweet Potatoes Serves 3 or 4 1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges 1 ½ Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling

Thanks to the Falleti Ice Arena and Kiwanis Club in Batavia for offering free ice skating, skates and cocoa on Thanksgiving morning. It’s a very kind and generous gift to the community. This event is becoming a holiday tradition for our family. It’s so nice to see the rink packed with kids and families having fun. Thank you to the group of Christmas carolers who went around the village of LeRoy! It was such a surprise and definitely a blessing to see the joyful faces of little kids singing carols and spreading cheer.

I would like to say a most sincere “Thank You” to the very kind lady who was so pleasant and generous to my husband and me at Tom Wahl’s on Monday evening, December 16. Our family has had some pretty difficult situations to deal with in the last few years, and such wonderful consideration from someone we don’t even know reminds us that there are some real “angels” here on Earth. If only there were more people like you who open their heart to others, we would have a much better world. Since we don’t know who you are, we will pay your kindness forward, something that is important to us also. God bless you, Merry Christmas, and a wish for many rewards to come to you in the new year.

What a wonderful seasonal experience the Faith Fellowship Church put on recently. The performances, players, scenery and the message were heartfelt and much appreciated. Well done!
Was shopping at Tops and a family came up and handed us a gift card and said we wanted to do something nice this holiday season. Merry Christmas! A reminder that God is good and so are random people!
Thank you for providing my family and me with free calendars every year. You are a wonderful human being. Driving through all the little towns at Christmas time brings so much joy. They are filled with festive lights, window displays and homes all decorated. Such a joyous time of year! I would like to give a shout out to the morning crew at the Mt. Morris McDonalds. It’s wonderful to be greeted each morning with their smiles and cheerful attitudes. No matter what the weather or how busy they are, they never fail to greet you with a smile or to send off with a “have a good day.” So, thank you for making my morning a little brighter each day.
Page 15
The crossing guards in LeRoy made my kids’ day! They dressed in PJ’s, Santa outfits and hats. These guys made my small town morning. My kids were so excited for the day going in to school after seeing them. I didn’t grow up in a small town and that little thing was really special!

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST
Perry Central Schools 50 Olin Ave, Perry
(NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.
Fun for all ages!
Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.
Featuring....
Benjamin Berry,
While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.
Professional Circus Artist and Hoop Dancer
Last Night Perry is funded through the enthusiastic generosity of individuals and community businesses. Last Night Perry also receives support from the Wyoming County District Attorney’s Stop-DWI Program.
Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.

BOWL GAMES AND NEW YEAR’S DAY
REMOVER
New Year’s Day is rife with tradition. Perhaps no such tradition is more exciting for fans of college football than the handful of New Year’s Day bowl games featuring some of the sport’s best teams. New Year’s Day bowl games can trace their origins back to the 19th century. According to History.com, on January 1, 1890, members of the Valley Hunt Club in Southern California paraded through the streets of Pasadena, California, engaging in various contests, including tug-of-war. While no collegians competed on the gridiron that day, the parade served as a precursor to the Tournament of Roses Parade, which immediately proceeded athletic contests that included polo matches and greasedpig catching. In 1901, the president of the parade, seeking to gain publicity for the town of Pasadena and its floral festival, sought to stage a sporting event that might attract more interest than pig-catching and polo. Festival organizers ultimately chose college football, deciding to initiate a matchup between a team representing the western United States and the eastern United States. On January 1, 1902, the football teams from the University of Michigan and Stanford University battled in the inaugural East-West football game. Michigan, which had not allowed a point all season long, steamrolled its way to a 49-0 victory. In fact, the game’s lack of competitiveness temporarily nixed plans for an annual New Year’s Day game, which was not played again until 1916, when Washington State University defeated Brown University 140. Interest in the game continued to grow from there on out, and in 1923, the game was moved to a large stadium known as the Rose Bowl. The game itself soon adopted the name of that stadium, and it retains that name today. Thanks to fan interest in the New Year’s Day game, other New Year’s bowl games soon followed, and continue to entertain college football fans every January 1. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW TO SUCCEED WITH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION Plan on being patient. Men and women who expect immediate results may be in for some disappointment, and that can compromise their future efforts. Recognize that resolutions rarely produce overnight results, and that commitments to losing weight and saving more money take time. If necessary, set small goals that can serve as markers on your way to achieving the larger goal.
Magic Maze REMOVER Baxter is a rescue from Lake Erie, where he wandered the docks until he was discovered by a passerby. It was about 7 years ago now when Baxter came into our lives and found a permanent place in our hearts. Baxter is a Schipperke-Pomeranian weighing slightly under 9 pounds. The only trick Baxter knows now-a-days is how to get treats. He knows where the treats are (in my right pocket), so he will routinely sit, like a good boy, on my right side, look up and stare until I cave in to grant him his wish. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Five Good Reasons To Eat Less Meat (NAPS)—The next time you’re planning a family meal, a party or just a little snack for yourself, consider this: Reducing your meat consumption can have a multitude of benefits. Why To Avoid Meat Here’s the explanation from Joe Loria, Meat Reduction Campaign Manager of World Animal Protection, a global nonprofit whose mission is to have a world where animals live free of suffering: 1) It helps your health: From reducing cancer rates and heart disease to showing an increased overall lifespan, by consuming more plant-based foods you’ll be helping to improve your own health. 2) It helps fight climate change: Factory farming is one of the leading causes of climate change and deforestation. Simply cutting back on the amount of meat you consume can combat climate change. 3) It helps farmed animals: Of the more than 70 billion animals farmed annually, 50 billion of them spend their lives on factory farms. There, they’re treated more like machines than like living, breathing, feeling creatures. They endure short, miserable lives and are often confined together in cages, crates or pens, which prevent them from engaging in natural behavior. Reducing your meat consumption will make a huge difference to the lives of these animals and free-up resources. 4) It protects wildlife: Grazing land and feed crops now use more than a third of Earth’s entire landmass. This rapid loss of habitat means critical species are disappearing at alarming rates. Many experts warn a mass extinction is on its way. 5) It helps fight hunger: There are nearly a billion starving people on the planet, while it takes 16 pounds of grain to produce just one pound of beef. By reducing your meat consumption you can help alleviate the waste associated with factory farming. Not eating meat can also help prevent slave labor and sexual abuse. Workers on factory farms are in many cases treated almost as cruelly as the animals. These workers are often subjected to workplace hazards, including life-threatening injuries, respiratory illnesses, PTSD, and exposure to dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria. You can help stand up for these exploited workers by reducing your meat consumption and withdrawing financial support from companies profiting from poor labor practices. Change Starts With You To protect your health, your planet, your fellow human beings and animals, it can be a good idea to dramatically reduce your consumption of meat. Fortunately, that need not be a hardship. There are plenty of tasty, nutritious plant-based alternatives and protein sources such as “clean meat.” Learn More For further facts, to pledge to eat less meat and to contribute to the cause, visit www.worldanimalprotection.us/meatreduction. Reducing your consumption of factory-farmed meat can be good for you and the rest of the planet. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* On Dec. 27, 1900, prohibitionist Carry Nation smashes up a bar in Wichita, Kansas, causing extensive damage and landing in jail. Nation became famous for carrying a hatchet and wrecking saloons, and sold souvenir hatchets to help fund her anti-alcohol activities. * On Dec. 26, 1946, infamous gangster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel opens his Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. The grand opening was a flop, however, and the casino lost $300,000 in the first week. The hotel was named after Siegel’s girlfriend, whose nickname was “The Flamingo” because of her red hair and long legs. * On Dec. 25, 1962, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a film based on the novel by Harper Lee, opens in theaters. The Great Depression-era story of racial injustice and the loss of childhood innocence is told from the perspective of a young Alabama girl named Scout Finch.

about insomnia. A registered nurse discussed how, in her career as a nursing home nurse, she had many residents with insomnia. She stated that she had amazing success with these residents. The snack they gave them was crackers and cheese or peanut butter crackers. I was skeptical at first, then one night at 2 a.m., on my fourth night of insomnia, I tried eating 2 teaspoons of peanut butter. Bingo! I slept. Whenever my insomnia occurs, I eat 2 teaspoons of peanut butter, and in less than 15 minutes I’m sleeping. I use a nothing-fancy store brand of peanut butter. Please pass this information on to other readers with an explanation. -- B.J.T. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing to give another option for this common problem. One reason that some people think this may work is that the protein content in peanut butter is a source of tryptophan, which increases serotonin levels to help one relax. I also have read that this effect is so small as to be clinically meaningless, and that any sleep effect is due to placebo. I suspect the truth is a combination. Two tablespoons of peanut butter is almost 200 calories, so this is not a good choice for someone struggling with too much weight. I’m also not one for “fancy,” but be sure to choose a peanut butter with no trans fats and no added sugars. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently recovered from sigmoid colectomy surgery, and I would hate to repeat this, given that I am 75 years old. What are the possibilities of recurrence of diverticulitis for which the surgery was performed? It’s nothing I’d care to undergo again if it can be avoided! -- C.K. ANSWER: Surgery for diverticulitis is generally reserved for people with multiple recurrences. The sigmoid colon tends to be the portion of the colon with the most diverticula (small pouches in the wall of the colon that may get inflamed or bleed). Surgery usually is curative, with only 15% of people developing new diverticula and only 2% to 11% needing further surgery. It’s not proven, but most authorities believe that reducing pressure in the colon with a high-fiber diet reduces risk of developing diverticula, either recurrent after surgery or in the first place. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of people whose hair turned white overnight due to some traumatic event. Is there any truth to that? -- H.M. ANSWER: The sudden change of hair color is called canities subita. There was a review of literature published in 2013 with 44 well-documented cases of sudden color change, 21 of which were associated with an episode of emotional stress. Think Sir Thomas More or Marie Antoinette before their respective executions. However, while true, rapid, color change is certainly documented, it is exceedingly rare. What probably is more common is the sudden loss of pigmented hair in someone who already has some gray hair. Sudden loss of pigmented hair, in a condition called alopecia areata diffusa, can lead to an apparent color change. Hair lost during chemotherapy or radiation sometimes can come back with a different color or texture. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

Beyond the strong recommendation that everyone brush and floss their teeth at least twice daily, as well as after every time they eat, there are some other tips that people can follow to reduce their risk of developing tooth decay and gum inflammation. For parents who want to find out for themselves how well their children are caring for their teeth and gums, there are “disclosing tablets” available at pharmacies. These chewable tablets make “plaque” (the bacteria-laden film that coats teeth with decay-causing bacteria) visible by using a coloring agent to temporarily stain the areas where plaque remains. Disclosing tablets enable parents to identify how and where children can improve their brushing technique. Disclosing tablets are one more tool we all can use to keep up with

MAKE BEDROOMS MORE CONDUCIVE TO SLEEP Set the right temperature. The NSF notes that research indicates a bedroom temperature of roughly 65 F makes for the best sleep. Human beings’ body temperatures rise and fall throughout the day, reaching their lowest level around 5 a.m. each day before slowly climbing as morning begins. A room that is too warm overnight may interfere with this natural dip, leading to restlessness. If necessary, install a programmable thermostat in the bedroom so the temperature in the room remains steady and in line with your body’s natural temperature fluctuations.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

HOMETOWN 1.
In loving memory of
Robert I. Sherman Sept. 21, 1927 - Dec. 31, 2009 10 years have passed so quickly. Think of you every day. We know that you’re in heaven. Will see you again someday. Love & miss you! Your Family

“Great actions are not always true sons of great and mighty resolutions…”
3.
~ Samuel Johnson This is the season for great and mighty resolutions. We analyze the nature of our lives and the direction they are taking, and decide how we could make improvements. We resolve to do better, either by eliminating some habit that is unworthy of us or by developing a practice that will enrich our lives. Johnson tells us that we also may be inspired to great action by circumstance rather than by resolution. When an opportunity arises, we may rise to the occasion with acts that do us credit and without the benefit of planning or high resolve. Arrangements made prior to need may include the assurance that adequate financing will be available. Our entire staff wishes all of our friends a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

GREEN WAYS TO CLEAN UP SNOW
Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

“Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work. • Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month.

(NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season.
• Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them. • Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them. • Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family. • Keep portable generators outside and away from the home. • Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home. • Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year.

2. How many UMass hoopsters went onto the NBA?

3. What’s the overall record of wins & loses between St. Bonaventure and U. Mass?
• If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequately watered and get rid of it after Christmas or when it gets dry. Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departments across the country are looking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members.
4. Although UMass leads the overall series against St. Bonaventure, the Bonnies have had lots of success against the Minutemen recently. How many consecutive times have the Bonnies beaten UMass?
“The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.” Training is provided by the department, and volunteers can serve in a variety of roles, from providing life-saving emergency response services to conducting fire prevention programs and disaster preparedness planning. Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify. Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits. Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment. For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.” It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.” Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts. “I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.” To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov.

DID YOU KNOW? Many people consider the Times Square section of midtown Manhattan the epicenter of North American New Year’s Eve celebrations. While there are plenty of places throughout North America to ring in the new year, few, if any, can compare to Times Square, where revelers have been celebrating the dawn of a new year for well over a century. According to the Times Square Alliance, New Year’s Eve was first celebrated in Times Square in 1904. But the New Year’s Eve ball, an iconic symbol of the holiday across the globe, did not make an appearance until 1907, when it descended from a flagpole atop One Times Square. Made of iron and wood, that first ball weighed 700 pounds and was outfitted with 100 25-watt light bulbs. One hundred light bulbs might have seemed like a lot back in 1907, but a century later the special ball made to mark the centennial celebration was illuminated with more than 32,000 Philips Luxeon LED bulbs, which organizers felt greatly increased the brightness and color capabilities of the ball.
