We have created a place where families in our community can go to comfortably enjoy delicious pizza and more together. Built with families in mind, the unique layout of our building allows parents and children to relax over great food in the semi-privacy of our expanded, partitioned dining area while other guests sample popular and craft beers from the twenty-tap system in our pub.

We’re Unique:
• Our menu is extensive and includes a variety of pizza and wings, fish fries and craft beverages! • With over 10 different wing sauces, our wings are crafted using our signature process, not simply fried and sauced!

MOST POPULAR ETHNIC CUISINES ACROSS THE COUNTRY What constitutes “ethnic” food differs from person to person. Someone of Italian descent may dine regularly on garlic-infused pasta dishes, while a person from another area of the world may find such foods exotic. In the cultural melting pot of North America, various cuisines representing countries that span the globe are within arm’s length for many people. According to Technomic, a Chicago-based research firm, 77 percent of Americans enjoy ethnic foods while dining out once a month. Around 38 percent order ethnic food weekly. In addition, many more people prepare ethnic cuisine at home. A growing interest in ethnic foods is fueled by young people. Technomic notes that millennials are more apt to want to try various cuisines and then incorporate them into their regular dining experiences. The National Restaurant Association found that 60 percent of people are likely to “tie their favorite ethnic food to their family history.” Interest in ethnic foods tends to be highest in urban areas where restaurants and ingredients may be more readily available. When it comes to the top ethnic cuisines enjoyed throughout the states or provinces and territories, Chinese, Mexican and Italian rally for the top spots on diners’ plates. While the NRA has Italian cuisine as earning topbilling, Technomic’s list says that Chinese food, at 76 percent, followed by Mexican food (74 percent) and Italian (71 percent) comprise the biggest ethnic draws. Japanese or sushi comes in a distant fourth at 32 percent in the United States. The statistics portal Statista indicates that, as of January 2015, Chinese, American and Italian foods are quite popular in Canada. However, the percentage of people who cook these foods as opposed to eating them out at a restaurant varies. Chinese food is most widely enjoyed in a restaurant setting, while Italian food is frequently whipped up at home. As immigration tides change, ethnic cuisine may change with them. However, interest in experiencing ethnic dining is likely to remain consistent.

Thankful for all Caregivers. Being a Caregiver is a very hard, stressful, demanding job whether it be for a family member or in a professional capacity. The physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be very overwhelming. If you know someone who is a Caregiver, consider offering This is directed to the one who ranted about others handling someone’s wheelchair without permission. You said that doing so is considered assault. Does this include someone touching my hearing aids? I have had someone reach out to touch them for one reason or another. Would I be right in calling the police next time someone did this? As I was pulling into a parking space at [local store] in [local town], I saw a dog in a vehicle that clearly was in distress. I sat there for approximately 5 minutes and decided to call 911 as the car was probably extremely hot inside. After another 10 minutes and still no cop, the owner came out. I exchanged words with her, and much to my dismay, she said she was only in the store for two minutes. These people who GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

to sit with their loved one so they can have a couple hours to themselves. Give them the opportunity to go out to lunch or have coffee with a friend, do some unhurried shopping, pamper themselves at the hairdresser or barbershop or take a relaxing bath. Just let them get away and take some time for themselves. If this is not possible, offer to do the grocery shopping, take items to the dry cleaners, help with the house cleaning, shovel the driveway or whatever would be helpful. Caregivers often feel isolated and lonely. Just being there for the caregiver, who is giving all of themselves to the one they are caring for, is so important.
I was having a bad day and went into the Mexican restaurant, Rancho Viejo on Ellicott St. in Batavia, and a young male waiter spontaneously paid for my meal. As I left the restaurant, we hugged.
Thank you to all the cheerful employees doing any kind of customer service during the holidays. I know from firsthand experience how difficult it can be to stay positive throughout this stressful retail season and service season. Thank you for making everyone’s day a little more jolly!
I would like to thank the Christmas Angel who paid the remaining balance of my layaway at Walmart. It is very much appreciated! Thank you so much for giving my family and myself an amazing Christmas. Bless you and your family this holiday season. I will be paying it forward in the future. Thank you!
Thank you to the Lady Braves volleyball coaches for a great, positive season! And to the parents for organizing a fabulous banquet at the end to celebrate. Everything was great from the photos to the food. Kudos!

I was only sorry that the cop never showed up during this time so this woman could have been charged with animal cruelty and perhaps even had her sweet little puppy taken from her!

people genuinely trying to be kind to you. I also have offered assistance to people in wheelchairs and not because, as you put it, I “feel sorry” for them. I try to help anyone who may need assistance. I have offered elderly persons help finding their car in a parking lot, assisted a person shorter than I in reaching a high shelf in a grocery store or even a child struggling to open a door. You see, there are people in this world who just want to be kind. Please don’t assume that, as you put it, you are “an object for pity” or that they are dwelling on the fact you are in a wheelchair. Next time, please just say, “No thank you,” and be grateful that there are still kind people in this world.

AUTO SECTION
DID YOU KNOW? Through the years, cars have evolved so much that certain parts once integral to their operation have now become obsolete. Only time will tell which components and features of today’s cars will disappear in the future. However, present drivers can reminisce about how cars have evolved even in the last 20 to 30 years. The following are some once-standard parts and features that have all but disappeared from modern vehicles. Ashtrays and cigarette lighters: Smoking-related accessories began to vanish as the dangers of smoking became more apparent. Ashtrays in the dashboard and in the rear armrests are no longer standard. Full-sized spare tire: The “doughnuts” of today can be driven on for only limited distances and look awkward on larger vehicles. The full-sized spare enabled drivers to repair the flat tire on their own schedules. Control knobs: Push buttons and digital dashes have replaced the manual knobs of the past. Levers often enabled drivers to adjust the heat without taking their eyes off the road. Bench seats: Front bench seats have given way to two seats separated by a center console. No longer is it possible to fit three or four people in the front of a vehicle. Whip antenna: Remember those thin, flexible antennas? Many modern vehicles feature more solid antennas that can be unscrewed for trips through the carwash or an antenna that is modeled into the car in an inconspicuous way. If drivers exhibit a preference for satellite radio in the years ahead, traditional antennas may soon become obsolete as well.
Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS
AUTO SECTION
(NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road.
BATAVIA AUTOMOTIVE
1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. bataviaautony.com SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS How else can drivers improve visibility? In addition to replacing headlight bulbs in pairs every two to three years, drivers can take the following proactive measures to reduce the likelihood that their vision will be compromised while on the road. • Replace worn out wiper blades. Wiper blades need to be changed each season or in three-month intervals. Rubber wiper blades can grow brittle rather quickly, potentially compromising driver visibility at times when they need their vision to be as strong as possible, such as when rain or snow is falling. • Clean interior glass and mirrors. Over time, interior glass can develop a film-like buildup that reduces vision and creates hazy reflections from the sun. Smokers may notice such buildup is especially thick in their vehicles. Periodically clean interior glass and mirrors to prevent this film from compromising your vision. • Don’t hang accessories in your vehicle. Fuzzy dice, photos and other items hung on rearview mirrors can prove distracting and block you from seeing the road.
FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. AUTOMOTIVE

We Care About ut
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
TREATING SUBSTANCE ABUSE WITH DENTAL CARE As scientists increasingly delve into the subject of how oral health is linked to overall well-being, they are coming up with some very interesting findings. The latest of these involves a link between good oral care and better treatment outcomes for those suffering from substance abuse. Researchers found that, when comprehensive oral care was part of a more holistic approach to substance abuse treatment, those who had their major oral health problems addressed by a dental professional stayed in treatment approximately twice as long and had a more than 80 percent increase in completing their treatment program. Those receiving comprehensive dental care realized substantial improvements in employment and drug abstinence, as well as a dramatic decrease in homelessness.
The importance of good oral health is far-reaching and touches many aspects of the body’s overall health. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL invites you to take advantage of our commitment to the highest quality dental care by calling 585.343.4246 for a convenient appointment. At 6 Batavia City Centre, our services include dietary advice, routine maintenance care, restorative work, and cosmetic approaches to enhance any smile. P.S. The study mentioned above shows that improved dental health leads to improved selfesteem, which contributes to a desire for selfimprovement.

Shingles Vaccine Causes Severe Side Effects ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I received the first dose of Shingrix this week and had pretty severe side effects, though in the range of what can be expected: high fever (101.5), intense shivering, a severe headache and 12 hours of extreme fatigue. The entire reaction began 11 hours after the shot and ended 18 hours after that. I am 61 and in excellent health, taking only 25 mcg of levothyroxine daily. I have a few questions that I hope you can answer. I’ve tried looking at the clinical trial results for Shingrix, but I am not qualified to understand the information as presented. 1. Is it likely that I’ll have a similar (or worse?) reaction to the second shot? The package insert says one can react to the first, second, neither or both. 2. Are both injections identical? 3. When I had chickenpox as a child, I was way sicker than the average kid. Related? 4. If I get shingles, do I have a higher risk for a severe case? -- J.G. ANSWER: Compared with the previous one-time vaccine Zostavax, the new two-dose Shingrix vaccine is much more effective. However, it does have a higher risk of side effects. You have had the most common side effect, though only 10% of people will have symptoms as bad as yours. These symptoms are caused by your body mounting an inflammatory response to the glycoprotein in the vaccine (the new vaccine does not contain a live virus). You clearly have a robust system to fight off infection. To answer your questions in order: You are at higher risk for a similar reaction for the second shot. I would plan your day accordingly, and premedicate with Tylenol (even though it may make the vaccine slightly less effective). The second vaccine is identical to the first. I have read reports that there have been shortages of the vaccine. Chickenpox and shingles can affect you both by the virus attacking you and by an exuberant inflammatory and immune reaction. I would guess that you are at lower risk for viral complications (such as infection of the eye, brain or lungs) but at higher risk for symptoms due to your own system, such as high fever. In many cases, the body’s response to infection can be as damaging as the infection itself. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year I was treated for gout and was prescribed allopurinol (100 mg) once a day. Approximately five to six months after I started taking it, I became lethargic and was not feeling myself (I am a very young 77 years old) and suddenly lost my sense of taste. I was taken off the medicine and still have little taste sensation other than citrus fruits, apples and spices. I was told that this could last for months, years or forever. Do you have any suggestions for me? I am eating as before, hoping that I will recover my taste. -- N.K. ANSWER: I certainly found that allopurinol can cause loss of taste sensation, but the Food and Drug Administration case reports don’t say how long it can last. Unfortunately, I can’t find any reliable way (or even plausible way) to increase the likelihood of getting your taste sensation back. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Mayer’s Cider Mill: Forming the Future; Preserving the Past By Amanda Dudek
T
he farm that was destined to become Mayer’s Cider Mill, the oldest continuously operating cider mill in New York State, was built by Perry Langdon in 1835 and sold to Donat Mayer, who began pressing cider on the property, in 1876. Donat Mayer Jr. was the first to begin making donuts on the property, and donuts, made according to David Bower Sr.’s recipe, are still in high demand, especially apple cider donuts. David Bower Sr. bought the cider mill from Harvey Mayer, Donat Mayer Sr.’s grandson, in 1962. David Bower Jr. continues historic and family traditions by successfully running the Webster cider mill. The Bower family has also expanded the family’s potent potables interests by opening a winery and offering craft beer and hard cider. The Bower’s Lake Ontario Winery and Vineyards in Hilton, which will celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2020, sits on property which was originally purchased By Delos P. Tenney. He developed the land, establishing vast apple orchards and growing pears, grapes, plums, peaches and cherries. Now, the Bower family’s winery benefits from some of the richest wine country in New York. Lake Ontario Winery and Vineyards is situated along what is known as the Niagara Escarpment which stretches from the Genesee River all the way to the Niagara River. It is also commonly called the Lake Ridge as it sits along the banks of Lake Ontario, or the Banana Belt for its shape as it begins north of Rochester with its tip resting at Niagara-on-the-Lake. This fertile region is filled with vineyards and wineries as it features a growing season of at least 220 days, second only to Long Island.
This happy group enjoys an elegant and fun shower in Webster!
“We are protected from what is called a ‘microclimate,’” commented David Bower Jr. “It makes this a great region to grow native grapes, hybrid grapes, grapes used for European vinifera wines and all kinds of stone fruit.” Bower Jr. plans to bring vineyards back to Webster along Five Mile Line between 2020 and 2021. The Bowers continue to expand their winery from what was purchased as a farm in 1983 to a destination and event venue comprised of the Lake Ontario Winery and Vineyards, a new Craft Haus and its nearly completed Estate Wedding Barn, featuring open, welcoming spaces, handcrafted Amish furniture, a roaring fireplace and beautifully high ceilings. At the same time, the 184-year-old cider mill location in Webster is in no danger of being neglected. In fact, quite the opposite: David Bower Jr. has expanded the historic cider mill to include a satellite tasting area for wine, beer and hard cider as well as space to enjoy delicious edibles such as paninis, pizzas, cheese boards, fudge, cookies, and specialty ciders. “Some things have changed,” explained Bower Jr. “There are more restrictions on products sold directly to customers. has to be pasteurized using either flash or UV pasteurization, unless the juice is specifically being sold for fermentation.” Even then, customers must sign a paper to that effect, and the jug itself is labeled as being only for the intent of fermentation. Even so, many more things have stayed the same. “We still use the same press that the Mayer Family used in the 1930’s-40’s,” stated Bower Jr. “It was pressurized by water, and they put hydraulics into it. We also use a Pioneer Press which is a roll press.” The Bowers also continue to make their much-sought-after apple cider donuts, using an original recipe created by David Bower Sr. in 1962. Bower Sr. also added a home beer and wine making retail store to the cider mill, as well, which sells home-brewing kits and malt extract to those interested in making their own product. “People used to make barrels and barrels of cider,” shared Bower Jr. “It was the poor man’s drink back then. They did a lot of their own fermentation just like they did their own canning.” Growing grapes and producing wine have captured the interest of Bower Jr.’s son, David Bower III. Bower III, who studied viticulture and enology at Cornell as well as grape and wine production and science at Missouri State University, currently works in North Carolina as the Winemaker & Enology Instructor for Surry Community College’s Surry Cellars, a live winery project where students are taught Viticulture and Enology. He also teaches online classes for Sonoma State University Wine Business Institute in California, and he has won many awards for the schools at which he works and has worked. Between Mayer’s Cider Mill’s proud past and its brilliant future, both in the Bower family’s capable hands, patrons can expect more, not less, to enjoy with each new year. THE BIBLE SAYS: “Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.” (Proverbs 23:29-36) “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:” (Colossians 3:5)

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
5 Important Medicare Changes Coming For 2020 (NAPS)—If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, or are considering one, you will have more plan choices with a wider range of benefits to help you better manage your day-to-day health needs during this year’s open enrollment period. Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, gives Medicare enrollees a chance to revisit their Medicare insurance coverage, make sure it still fits their needs and make changes for the coming year. Online health insurance broker eHealth outlines five of the most important Medicare changes to be aware of this year: 1. New benefits to help those with chronic illness. Starting in January, 2020, some Medicare Advantage Plans will include benefits for people with chronic illness that will help to support their care. A few examples include nutrition services, transportation to doctor’s appointments and home improvements like shower grips and wheelchair access. More traditional services like dental care, vision care and hearing aids also have been expanded.
* On Dec. 13, 1577, English seaman Francis Drake sets out from Plymouth, England, with five ships and 164 men on a mission to raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World. Three years later, Drake’s return to Plymouth marked the first circumnavigation of the earth by a British explorer. * On Dec. 10, 1901, the first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite and other explosives. It is believed that Nobel created the prizes out of moral regret over the increasingly lethal uses of his inventions in war. * On Dec. 14, 1911, Norwegian Roald Amundsen becomes the first explorer to reach the South Pole, beating his British rival, Robert Falcon Scott, by more than a month. Amundsen used sleigh dogs, while Scott employed motor sledges, ponies and dogs.
2. Medicare Advantage premiums will be lower next year. The average monthly premium for Medicare Advantage plans is expected to be $23 in 2020, a decrease of 14% from an average of $26.87 in 2019, and down 28 percent since 2017. The average Medicare Advantage premium this year is the lowest it’s been since 2007. 3. Part D drug plan premiums will be lower, too. The average Medicare prescription drug plan premium for 2020 is $30, a decline of 13.5% as compared with 2019 costs. Savings on out-of-pocket costs may be available as well. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year. 4. Seeing a doctor without leaving home will get easier. Many seniors will have access to Medicare Advantage telehealth benefits to connect with health care providers online or by phone. For 2020, more than half of all Medicare Advantage plans will offer added telehealth benefits, reaching up to about 1.7 million enrollees. 5. Medigap plan options are changing. Two of the most popular supplemental plans (so-called Medigap plans) used by those enrolled in original Medicare—Plan F and Plan C—will no longer be available to new Medicare members or those born after January 1, 1955. Fortunately, Plan G, another Medigap policy, offers the same level of coverage provided by Plan F—minus the Part B deductible—and will continue to be available after January 2020. HOW AGING ADULTS CAN MAINTAIN THEIR MENTAL ACUITY Aging is associated with or linked to a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that won’t impact adults’ daily lives much at all. While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of age-related cognitive decline. Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks. But age-related cognitive decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age.

FOUR TIPS FOR BETTER MANAGING YOUR RETIREMENT BUDGET (NAPSI)—A recent survey by Ameriprise Financial found that 68 percent of retirees with at least $100,000 in assets have not yet taken money out of their savings, beyond what they must withdraw as part of the IRS’ required mini-mum distributions from their retirement accounts. It turns out that the transition from saving money to living off of those assets is much tougher for seniors to navigate than many realized. The Ameriprise survey found that just one in five seniors say they feel “confident” about how to draw down their retirement savings, leaving them fraught with uncertainty about how to manage their budgets. Helpful Hints Here are four tips that personal finance experts recommend for tapping that nest egg and making the most of your retirement years: 1. Revisit your monthly expenses. Many people do a good job of tracking their spending in their preretirement years and establishing projections for what they anticipate they will spend in retirement. But it’s important to revisit those estimates and use your actual expenditures to fine-tune your average monthly expenses. This will give you a more precise handle on your spending needs and might also identify some areas where you can reduce spending. 2. Consider the bucket approach to income. A common approach to the asset withdrawal phase of retirement is to establish a “bucket strategy.” This approach involves breaking your nest egg into three buckets: (1) The Cash Bucket (one to three years of short-term income); (2) The Income Bucket (five to eight years of medium-term income); and (3) The Growth Bucket (10+ years of long-term income). As each of the first two buckets gets low on dollars, you replenish them with assets from the others. This helps you achieve stability in your cash flow and increases peace of mind. 3. Maximize the value of your assets. In addition to savings accounts and retirement accounts, you may have the ability to unlock value from assets that you didn’t consider. For example, if you own your home, a reverse mortgage can free up cash for you while you still live there. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. It’s your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime. When you sell a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—you get a cash payment and the purchaser assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit. Candidates for life settlements are typically 70 or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. 4. Keep a backstop in place. Financial advisers often recommend that you keep a cash backstop in place of perhaps 12−18 months’ worth of living expenses. This will help cover unexpected costs (the biggest risk factor is health care expenses) and provide you with some reassurance that you can weather a sudden big-ticket item without having to cancel that longplanned vacation. Remember, it’s your retirement; pay yourself first. For seniors who have fine-tuned their expense budget, allocated their income into buckets that ensure cash flow, maximized the value of their everyday assets and put in place a cash backstop, there’s no reason to hesitate to draw down your retirement accounts anymore. Just stick to your plan and stay the course. For seniors who need additional cash flow for retirement, if they own a life insurance policy that they no longer need or can afford, they may be able to boost their retirement savings by selling that policy for immediate cash. HOLIDAY FUN FACTS Coca-Cola is largely responsible for the red coat and ensemble Santa Claus wears. The company made the image popular in its 1930s advertisements.
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That change in holiday travel plans might be more vexing than you’d expected. But try to take it in stride. Also, it couldn’t hurt to use that Aries charm to coax out some helpful cooperation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your Bovine determination helps you deal with an unforeseen complication. And, as usual, you prove that when it comes to a challenge, you have what it takes to take it on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although a romantic theme dominates much of the week, all those warm and fuzzy feelings don’t interfere with the more pragmatic matters you need to take care of. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Best not to ignore those doubts about an upcoming decision. Instead, recheck the facts you were given to make sure nothing important was left out. A weekend surprise awaits you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) No time for a catnap -- yet. You might still have to straighten out one or two factors so that you can finally assure yourself of the truth about a troubling workplace situation. Stay with it. VIRGO (August 23 September 22) News from an old friend could lead to an unexpected (but nonetheless welcome) reunion with someone who had once been very special in your life. Be open to the possibilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It might be time for a family council. The sooner those problems are resolved, the sooner you can move ahead with your holiday preparations. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Take some time out to give more attention to a personal relationship that seems to be suffering from a sense of emotional neglect. Provide that much-needed reassurance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Cheer up. That unusual circumstance that might faze most people can be handled pretty well by the savvy Sagittarian. Look at it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone you believe has hurt you in the past might now need your help. Reaching out could be difficult. But the generous Goat will be able to do the right thing, as always. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Prioritizing is an important part of your preholiday scheduling. Try to give time both to your workday responsibilities and those personal matters you might have neglected. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With the vestiges of your anger about that painful incident fading, you can now focus all your energy on the more positive aspects of your life, including that personal situation. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing your own strong sense of reassurance to others and encouraging them to hope.
GET CRAFTY WITH HOMEMADE ORNAMENTS Sweet sentiments: Use old Scrabble® letter tiles to form a favorite holiday phrase, like “Joy to the World.” Glue the tiles together and hang from the tree on a piece of ribbon.
Stokoe Farms Receives Award for Service to Military Families It may not seem like much, that annual Christmas Tree so many take for granted, but to our military members and their families, it’s a welcome reminder of the holiday spirit and the gratitude of their neighbors near and far. This year, the local National Guard unit presented Larry and Martha Stokoe and their daughter, Suzanne Stokoe, with a plaque in honor of their dedication to serving military families, especially during the holidays. Suzanne Stokoe couldn’t have been more surprised. “We are so honored!” she exclaimed. “We just play a small part; it takes a huge and generous community. We were really accepting the award on behalf of many!” Each year, Stokoe Farms participates in the Christmas Spirit Foundation’s Trees for Troops Program, sending Christmas Trees to military families. “Trees for Troops delivers Christmas trees all across the country,” explained Suzanne Stokoe. “We are a Western New York collection point. We donate some of our trees and have trees delivered to us from various area farms as well as many Legions, Auxiliaries, VFWs and Blue Star Mothers before being picked up and distributed.” “We felt very strongly and passionately about this program and the way in which it offers a little bit of comfort,” Stokoe shared, noting the cause has hit a little closer to home this year. “My nephew, Steven Stokoe, is actively deployed,” said Stokoe. “He had to leave right after the birth of his first child.” Mother and baby were present to help accept the Stokoe award. Stokoe Farms also holds a Military Appreciation Weekend on opening weekend each season. Military members and their families enjoy the farm for free during this event. “It can be well over 700-800 people,” said Stokoe. “We also collect donations for Trees for Troops. New York State is one of its top contributors; Christmas tree farmers are very generous.” Still, the demand remains far greater than the supply. “Sometimes, I receive cards from service members who received a tree; they always make me cry,” shared Stokoe. “For them, the tree is a small piece of home; the smell itself is comforting. It motivates us to keep the program growing.” Stokoe Farms also packs in small ornaments, gifts, candy and whatever they can fit along with the trees. Trees for Troops will launch its 15th season soon, having delivered 225,319 trees to servicemen and women from more than 800 different real Christmas tree growers over the last 14 years. Those interested may donate directly to Trees for Troops. They may also call Stokoe Farms or donate through its website.

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Check for leaks and plug any you find. Homes may develop air leaks over time, and such leaks allow air to infiltrate the home. W hen that occurs, homeow ners instinctively turn up the thermostat in w inter to combat the cold air getting in. Come summertime, those same homeow ners w ill run their air conditioners on a higher setting in an effort to stay comfortable w hen hot air is creeping through the cracks. Rather than adjusting the temperature inside, fix any sources of air infiltration you find. Run your hand along doorw ays and w indow s to determine if any drafts are coming through. Older homes may also develop cracks in bricks, around the foundation and in siding or stucco. Seal any areas w here you feel air infiltrating your home, w hich w ill save money, reduce your energy consumption and make your older home more efficient.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
PAINTING/PAPERING
TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

Need A Plumber? • All water heaters including tankless • High efficiency furnaces, AC & boilers • Water conditioning systems & Goulds well pumps • All general household plumbing • Drain cleaning PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic.
LAWN & LANDSCAPING
“On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.”

He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard.
111 CEDAR ST. • BATAVIA • 585-343-4899
If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price.

HOW TO MANAGE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TRIPS WITH TOTS IN TOW Holiday shopping has changed considerably since the dawn of the Information Age. Whereas holiday shopping once required shoppers to spend hours perusing stores at the local mall, nowadays many shoppers get the bulk of their shopping done online. Shopping online may be convenient, but more traditional holiday shopping still affords shoppers the chance to find great deals, especially at the last minute. Parents may prefer to leave the kids at home when holiday shopping, but sometimes they don’t have a choice. Fortunately, there are ways to manage holiday shopping trips with kids in tow. 4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

GREAT PART-TIME JOBS FOR RETIREES Teaching: Retirees can also put their professional experience to work in the classroom. Inquire about teaching opportunities at a nearby university or even the local high school. Such opportunities may only be available on a volunteer basis, but some might pay part-time salaries or small stipends. Either way, many retirees find that working with young people helps them stay young, and passing on lessons learned to younger generations can provide a strong sense of purpose.
TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Don’t be afraid to take risks. Successful women are not afraid to take risks. Many may have decided they don’t fit a specific mold and want to affect change. However, calculated risks are different from reckless decisions, and it is important to recognize the difference. A calculated risk may involve starting your own business after learning the ropes in a specific field and testing the waters. Reckless behavior would be opening that business with no relevant experience.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. And rather than mailing contracts to prospective clients, email contracts that accept e-signatures, ultimately storing the contracts on your file server rather than in a dusty old filing cabinet. TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE
Help Wanted
(NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.”
Body Shop Estimator/Assistant Manager Needed for busy shop. Excellent opportunity. • Participate in developing a proper repair plan for each vehicle. • Prepare estimates in accordance with insurance partner and company guidelines. • Maintain and execute a timely schedule before, during and after completion of repairs. • 1-3 years experience in a similar role. • Proficiency with CCC One, Audatex, and/or Mitchell estimating systems. • Familiarity with various insurance direct repair guidelines. • I-CAR or ASE Certifications are a bonus.
Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful.
Call Bob DeVos at 585-359-1300 ext. 540 or email: bob.devos@oconnorchevrolet.com
Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
