I prefer winter and Fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape — the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show. ~ Andrew Wyeth

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save smaller bits of leftover veggies in a large freezer-safe container or bag, in the freezer. When it’s full, make vegetable soup. * “Be sure you use bathroom fans correctly, turning on to remove steam, but turning off to keep from pumping out heat. This is equally important in the summer, when you pump out valuable cooled air. Many people don’t think of fans this way, and they end up running for hours.” -- R.D. in Mississippi * Keep salt or baking soda by the stove for small quick cleanups. A good dose of salt will stop an egg from running all over the place. Dip a damp cloth in baking soda for a handy scrub. Although a handful of either might work in a pinch on a small flare-up on the stove, you should have a fire extinguisher close by for fires.
FEBRUARY IS
* “I used to comb through my last year’s calendar for important yearly dates when transferring them to the new year’s calendar. This year I have gotten smart. At the end of the month, before turning the page, I have highlighted the items I would want to put in next year’s calendar. When I look back, I will not have to search through all the entries for the good stuff.” -- U.L. in Ohio

* “I just spent a lot of time cleaning my mother’s bathtub in a longneglected bathroom. To keep it from mildewing, I used paste wax to protect the walls. You can use car wax for the same purpose, and many people know about this helpful tip. But I wanted to add a caution: walls only. Especially if you have an elderly resident (or a child), do not wax the inside of the tub, and make sure to have a nonslip mat in the tub at all times.” -- A daughter in Oregon

Disappointed and Sad I am disappointed in some people. It is sad. I was at [Business Name] and got a cart that a good Samaritan left so I in return left it unhooked for someone else. At that time a lady came out and I watched her while I was putting my bag in the car. She took her cart AND the one I left, hooked them, and in turn got the quarters. I always leave my cart if I get one or return a cart if it was left and I used it. I try to do something nice and someone has the nerve to do that. It's not right. Makes me disappointed and sad that someone would do this.
S E V RA Thank You! A local catering company surprised us again with delicious food. Thank you! Your next-door neighbors are most appreciative. Wonderful Wife Thank you to my wonderful wife for the sacrifices you have made to take care of our two children. You have paused your career as a standout teacher – twice – to focus on raising them, currently our little girl in her first year of life. You are an outstanding mother, wife, and friend. Everyone whose life you have touched is fortunate, especially me. Life is undoubtedly hard right now with two young ones, but the messes, poor sleep, and frustrations are worth it. The days are long but the years are short. We are blessed with two healthy happy children, a roof over our heads, and stability. Through all the challenges I look forward to moments big and small: cooking, Adirondack vacations, playing outside with the kids, family hikes, silly time, and couch time (plus Trivia and Even Exchange in the Penny Saver). I love you and keep your head up. I’m glad I started a conversation with you – the tall, beautiful brunette from the environmental club – at that party back in college 16 years ago. Avon Inn Angel! On January 12, 2023 our ladies golf league gathered for an "after-the holiday" get together at the Avon Inn. One of our golfers fell into medical distress and we would all like to thank Angel, our bartender/server for her quick actions to get our friend comfortable, cooled down and cleared the way for the emergency workers. Your assistance and calmness were much appreciated.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Bariatric Surgery Can Be Considered to Keep Weight Off ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had a BMI over 40 for the last 20 years, and I have not been able to lose weight or keep the weight off. My doctor prescribed Ozempic, which is helping, but as soon as I stop, all the weight creeps back on in a few weeks. I was always wary of surgery for weight loss, but recent studies seem to indicate better long-term health outcomes. What are your thoughts? -- S.O. ANSWER: Medical or surgical treatment for weight loss is not right for every person who is overweight. Many people take medications in the class called glucagonlike peptide-1 agonists, which includes semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy), liraglutide (Saxenda and Victoza) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro). But these medicines have the potential for harm, and an individual’s risks, especially conditions that can be affected by being severely overweight or obese, need to be carefully considered. Surgery has far more risks than medication and requires the most careful consideration before receiving a recommendation of bariatric surgery, of which there are many types. I am much more likely to refer a patient to one of my colleagues in bariatric surgery when a patient is very obese and when there are clear medical issues that I can expect to get better with surgery. These medical issues can include diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Most of the time, these conditions can be well-managed without bariatric surgery, but sometimes management is very difficult. In this case, consideration of bariatric surgery is worthwhile. Bariatric surgery is never the first choice in weight management. A comprehensive lifestyle intervention -- with an individualized diet (ideally recommended by an expert such as a registered dietician or nutritionist), moderate exercise (with a goal of 150 minutes per week minimum), and regular meetings to help keep a person on track -- is the right place to start. It is effective for many people if they maintain the behaviorial changes. I have been prescribing some of my patients with the GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP medications with good results, but as you mention, if you stop taking them, they stop working. Unless you make a dramatic change to your lifestyle that you can keep up, the weight will return. Bariatric surgery does have very strong long-term weightloss data, as well as dramatic reductions in diabetes when used for the appropriate people.

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, which can cause soreness and bleeding. According to the CDC, pregnancy gingivitis affects as many as 75 percent of pregnant women. Hormonal changes can lead to gum inflammation because of the body’s decreased ability to fight plaque bacteria coupled with increased blood flow to the gums. While there’s no evidence that shows mild gingivitis is harmful to the fetus or causes premature birth or miscarriages, gingivitis may lead to periodontitis (advanced gum disease), which has been linked to preterm birth and low birth weight. It can also lead to tooth loss if not treated.

Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.
Snack Foods That Promote Better Sleep • Almonds: Magnesium is a mineral with muscle-relaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small amount of almonds before bed might be enough to make falling and staying asleep easier. • Bananas: Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Lowering Our Drug Costs I got a shock the other day when I went to the pharmacy to pick up the latest refill of my three drugs and realized that the pharmacy assistant had neglected to run it through GoodRx, the program that helps reduce the price of our drugs. Once he did that, the cost dropped significantly. It made me realize just how much other seniors are paying for the drugs we need to stay healthy. There are ways to cut those costs. It just takes a little work and a lot of monitoring on our part to make sure it happens. As mentioned, there’s GoodRx (www.goodrx.com), which I’ve used for several years. Their website isn’t the easiest to use, but after you try it once, you’ll appreciate being able to cut the costs of your drugs every time you need a refill. There are other ways as well: RxAssist (www.rxassist.org) has programs that are run by the pharmaceutical companies to help those who can’t afford their prescriptions. If your drugs cost more than $10, present your RxAssist card to get the lowest price. Check the website for a long directory of patient assistance programs. Beware that some programs involve a small fee to be a member and many have eligibility requirements. Consider Walmart pharmacies for their generic program. A 30-day prescription will cost $4 and only $10 for a 90-day prescription. Not all generic drugs will qualify for those prices, but it’s worth making a call to your local Walmart pharmacy to find out if your drugs are on that list. NeedyMeds website (www.needymeds.org) was started by a physician in 1997 to help gather information about reduced drug and health care costs. The website says over $337 million has been saved so far. And finally, check the prices at Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drugs (costplusdrugs.com). For some drugs, this one is the lowest of all. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

GROWING TRENDS IN TODAY’S HOMES Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

COLD W EATHER W ILDLIFE IN HOM ES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAM AGE RISKS M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Cats and Colds DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This winter, a lot of my family has had colds and flu. Can my cat catch a cold from us? -- Darlene, via email DEAR DARLENE: Cats don’t catch colds directly from humans, but they can suffer from upper respiratory infections that are just as uncomfortable. A number of viral and bacterial infections can make your cat sick. Some of these, such as FVR (feline rhinotracheitis) and FVC (feline calicivirus) can be prevented by making sure your cat gets an annual checkup and vaccinations. An underlying health condition also can make your cat more susceptible to upper respiratory infections. Again, regular checkups and shots can keep it healthy. What symptoms does a cat with a URI have? It may be sniffling and sneezing, along with a clear or cloudy discharge from the eyes or nose. Your cat also may have little to no appetite and might be lethargic. Contact the veterinarian right away if your cat has any of these symptoms. The vet will want to examine your cat to confirm what kind of URI it has. Use a cat carrier so other cats in the waiting room won’t be exposed, and to keep your cat safe. Follow the vet’s instructions on caring for your sick cat. You may be given a prescription, and you will be asked to keep the cat comfortable and warm, and to try to get it to drink water and eat some food. Dry food may be a turnoff, but it may eat a little wet food. If your cat won’t eat or drink, contact the vet again -- an IV may be needed to keep it hydrated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases. DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A NEW SEASON IS SPRINGING UP AT SPRINGDALE FARM BY LORI BRUTON animals and agriculture and how they affect our daily lives. Everyone comes away knowing more after fun at the farm. New animals are coming this spring. Keep an eye on the farm’s social media for updates. Carson says animals thrive and are happier when there is more than one kind in a specified area, so this farm works well for the animals. Carson adds, “Goats need to be together. It was interesting integrating them back with each other after being apart for so long [with the pandemic]. Their feisty personalities came out while getting reacquainted.”
W
hen my kids were growing up, we often visited Springdale Farm (700 Colby Street in Spencerport). It is an excellent place to bring rambunctious children. The fresh air and live animals brighten any day. In my younger days, I enjoyed my grandpa’s farm, especially the pigs, so when I discovered Springdale Farm with my own children, I was delighted. James Adams purchased Springdale Farm in 1876, and his family owned it for nearly a century. At that time, it was primarily a fruit farm. His son, Myron, took over and converted it to a dairy farm because of an ice storm that hit in the 1930s, damaging the fruit trees. The Adams family sold Springdale to another farmer in 1960. Then, in 1993, Monroe County acquired the farm to save it from a permanent shutdown. Since then, Heritage Christian Services has operated the farm, making amazing improvements, such as adding a playground, pavilion, and more. It has a lot to offer families and the community. Director Debra Carson, says, “It’s a great place for people of all ages. There’s something for everybody.” The 200-acre property is an extension of Northampton Park. Visitors may walk the trails, have fun with the animals, and explore the outdoors. Balcony Point is also available to rent for events. What makes this farm unique is that Heritage Christian Services has two adult day programs on-site, allowing individuals with developmental challenges to learn job skills and work with other people. They help with the farm’s daily maintenance and play a huge role in the community.
Six goats currently live on the farm. Laverne was born there. Mama was born on the farm, and her kids were born off-site during the pandemic. Their coloring is snow-white, which inspired the names Anna and Elsa after the Frozen characters. Kids who visit get a kick out of those names. The other two goats grew up together: Panda is black and white, and Clementine is brown and white. The goats have fun personalities; they love to ‘kid’ around. Misty is a rescued cat who enjoys her new home with all her farm friends. I asked if they would add any other pigs after the passing of their mascot pig, Ricky. Ricky’s happy snorts, tail wiggles, and perky personality will be missed and fondly remembered. Carson said they are working on adding two brother pigs to the farm. Stay tuned on social media. Come out for the Sheep Shearing event on April 29th from 10 am to 3 pm. This event includes a weaving demonstration and agricultural activities, arts and crafts, a petting zoo, a reptile show, fishing, a bounce house, and food trucks. Visitors may enjoy all there is to do and see on the farm. Donations keep Springdale Farm running and they use social media to show how donations are used to keep the farm going. As Carson says, “It’s a great experience. It’s where people can come and create memories.” I certainly can attest to that. I will treasure the memories I created with my family at Springdale Farm. It’s a great place to go and talk to the animals like Dr. Dolittle, no matter your age. Animals are good listeners. They are waiting to welcome you.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Carson, who said that during the pandemic, they shut down and had to ‘farm out’ the animals. They brainstormed new ideas and experiences for when the shutdown was over and have implemented them now since reopening. Springdale is an educational farm. They expand beyond school trips and tours, and now every visitor may learn about

Kimberly Ann Dougherty (Harrison) February 1, 2023
You have to fight against being an antique. ~Burt Lancaster
Avon - February 1, 2023 at age 72. Kim is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Jerry Dougherty; daughters, Jennifer Dougherty (Tim Ferrara), Colleen (Bryan) Mann; son, John Dougherty (Mark Falls); brother, Steve (Kathy) Harrison and multiple nieces, nephews, sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-laws and cousins.
ESTATE SALE EVENT SAVE THE DATE! Feb. 25th & 26th • 10am-3pm ART • PAINTINGS • FURNITURE • ANTIQUES UNBELIEVABLE COLLECTIBLES
Kim was born on November 8, 1950, the daughter of Roger and Jane Harrison. She was a proud wife, mother, sister, businesswoman and most proudly, grandmother to Ruairi, Gideon and Killian Mann. Kim grew up as a faith-filled person, attending St. Agnes Catholic School in Avon before going on to St. Agnes High School in Rochester. She grew up under the business savvy and community-focused guidance of her mother, Jane, the founder of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver. And the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
Priced to SELL!
Wadsworth Event Center 1211 West River Rd. • Caledonia, NY 14423
All craft supplies, needlework, Xstitch, plastic canvas, painting & knit/crochet instruction books, ribbon, silk flowers, gifts and greeting cards.
Kim was dedicated to her family, her faith, her community and to being a steward and leader of her mother’s legacy, co-leading the Genesee Valley Penny Saver alongside her beloved brother, Steve. She was the true example of a servant leader, giving selflessly to the people and community she cared so much about. Mostly quiet and reserved, she was proud, never letting her own challenges, health or other, get in the way of doing what she could to take care of others. After all, “she didn’t have time for that.” Sometimes it was just a thoughtful card, but often it was something she baked in the kitchen, where she found her peace.

She was not a social butterfly, unlike her husband, Jerry. That just wasn’t her thing. She found her joy in her family, her home and giving back to the community as an employer, donor and a dedicated, behind the scenes, Rotary wife. Kim served on the board of the St. Agnes School Education Foundation and for many years on the Theresa House Board. Teddy bears got their name in 1902 after President Theodore Roosevelt in a series of events that happened when he went on a hunting trip. While hunting, they happened upon a bear, and President Roosevelt refused to shoot it. The story soon spread all over, and the first stuffed bears were developed by toymakers Morris Michtom in the U.S. and Richard Steiff in Germany and they were named ‘Teddy Bears’ after President Roosevelt’s pet name.
