REVIEWS HAVE ON BUSINESSES.
Body & Mind ____________________14 Classifieds ____________________42 Employment ____________________32
Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative review.

Customer happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.

Speak to product quality, especially when you have a very good experience with an item. Many retailers request feedback via email. Take advantage of this opportunity to offer positive feedback. Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services. Happy customers can reach out to friends and family members to share their experiences with certain companies. Posting your own review on social media also can drum up business for a company you respect. Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an effort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased. Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

UNIQUE WAYS TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for couples to celebrate their love for each other, whether their relationship is relatively new or has endured through many years. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans are expected to spend close to $20 billion on Valentine’s Day this year. While chocolates and champagne are high on the list of most-purchased items for February 14th, couples should not feel beholden to tradition on Valentine’s Day. This year may be the perfect time to try something new, even if it’s out of couples’ comfort zones. Here are some novel ideas for couple’s looking to set their celebrations apart. Paint and sip: Couples can take part in a growing trend this Valentine’s Day. At paint-and-sip events, people are guided step-by-step through the process of painting their own masterpieces. Breaks are provided through the evening to indulge in beverages and snacks of choice. Couples can bring along a bottle or two of wine and a platter of cheeses, chocolates or other Valentine’s Day fare. Those interested can inquire at their nearest paint and sip location, such as Pinot’s Palette, for Valentine’s Day specials. Activity night: Couples who are naturally competitive or devoted sports fans can enjoy the evening by engaging in some healthy competition.
Some restaurants host trivia nights, or couples can head to the nearest arcade and battle it out. Panic and escape rooms are cropping up in towns across the country. These employ 60-minute real-life experiences in which participants must solve clues to escape the room. This can be a great bonding experience for fun-loving couples. Chef lessons: Although some couples may dine out on Valentine’s Day, men and women who like to dabble in culinary arts can prepare their own meals from the comforts of their own kitchens. Others may want to enroll in classes that provide expert instruction from area chefs or culinary instructors. Cooking classes can be an ideal way to spend time together learning skills that can be put to use again and again. Adventures: Couples who like to push the envelope can explore the possibilities of thrill-seeking activities. Some may include bungeejumping, hot-air balloon rides, taking laps at the racetrack, or hitting the ski slopes. Valentine’s Day might be a time for romance, but couples should not hesitate to buck tradition and spend the day together engaging in activities that accommodate their interests.

* “Unmatched socks are handydandy cleaners and have so many uses. Keep one by the dryer to get all the lint off the trap. Shake it out or pop it into the wash when needed. * If you have lots of outdoor or feral cats in your area, here is some good advice, given to me by my grandmother: Start your car with a bang -- on the hood, that is. When the overnight temperature dips, cats know to find someplace that is wind-shielded and off the ground, and sometimes that means they will climb up into your engine area to hunker down. If your car starts while they’re there, they can be hurt or even killed. Give the hood a good knock to let a cat know to get out quick. -- JoAnn

LEARN HOW TO WRITE A CLASSIC LOVE LETTER Today’s digital world has given rise to fast, stinted communications. According to the Pew Research Center, texting is the most widely used smartphone app, with 97 percent of Americans using it at least once a day. Across the globe, 8.3 trillion text messages are sent each year. That translates to roughly 16 million messages per minute. In addition to text messaging, social media posts are generally concise and short on depth. The written form of communication has changed dramatically in the last decade, as letter-writing and other forms of prose have all but faded away. But come Valentine’s Day, it can be special to dust off that pen and paper to express oneself via the written word in the name of love. Love letters are cherished keepsakes that can be kept for years. Such couples can illustrate a couple’s present-day love for one another and shed insight on their relationship years later. Here are some steps for writing a romantic love letter or note. • Jot down ideas and inspiration. Make a list of attributes and qualities in a spouse or romantic interest that you would like to highlight. Write down phrases and terms that come to mind. These words can serve as the foundation for the letter. • Categorize your thoughts into three areas. Jot down things that you like and love about the person, things that the person may do for you or your family that you appreciate, and various memories from throughout the years. • Write what you know. Do not feel pressured to make this letter more complicated than it has to be. The words will come when you write from the heart. While you can use other letters to spur ideas, do not lose your voice or try to mimic someone else’s work. • Make the letter personal and specific. Small details are important and make love letters more meaningful. Such details illustrate to a significant other that this letter was specifically written with them in mind. • Disregard length. The letter does not have to be a certain length. Whether it is a paragraph or several pages, the letter will be a successs if it says what you want to express. It doesn’t have to be long if that’s not your style. Writing a love letter can be a wonderful way to express romantic sentiments this Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday. The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays.

RV BUYERS’ GUIDE Usage frequency: When considering an RV, think about how often it will be used and where it will be stored when not in use. Garage storage may be challenging on a larger rig, and some housing communities frown upon parking RVs in driveways. This may affect the size you choose as well as the features you need, according to KOA, the RV camp site leader. • Transmission & Driveline Specialists • Differentials • NYS Inspections • Complete Clutch Repair • American & Foreign • 4WD Service

www.landltransmissions.com ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

PAW’S CORNER
In Finnish, February is called “helmikuu,” meaning “month of the pearl,” which refers to the snow melting on tree branches.
Page 13
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Is it possible to teach a cat to come when you call? I have a 2-year-old gray cat, Billy, who sometimes gets past my feet and runs out the door. I worry that he will get run over by a car or attacked by a coyote. He will look at me when I call, but that is it. -- Kelly in Fort Myers, Florida DEAR KELLY: You can teach cats to respond to certain commands, and calling them is one of those commands. I know that Billy can learn to do it, because he clearly recognizes your voice. He just doesn’t see the value in returning to you right away. So it’s important to help Billy “see” the value in returning when you call! You do this through training that uses positive reinforcement -- a favorite treat or food. Here’s how: * Come up with a noise that you can make just before Billy gets a treat or dinner. A whistle, a clucking noise, even a little song. * Just before you open his can of food or treat bag, make that noise. Do it at every feeding and treat time. * Set aside five minutes, twice a day, for reinforcement training. * During training, make the noise, wait for Billy to respond, then give him a treat. Back up a couple of feet and repeat. * Gradually increase the distance during each session until Billy comes running when you call. Once Billy associates that specific noise with a reward, he’ll come back every time you call. Make sure to always reward him when he comes, even if it’s just lots of praise. He’ll be far less likely to stay out if he escapes, and you’ll have much greater peace of mind. You can learn this technique: https://www.rd.com/list/how-totrain-a-cat/.

DO YOU HAVE CHRONIC HEEL PAIN?
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Do you have Chronic Heel pain? Are you not getting better after 3 months of treatments? Surgery not an option or you just don't want surgery?
Drug Use and Hepatitis C
Then consider Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)!!!
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 35-year-old white male who was a drug addict from the age of 14 until 32. You name it, I took it. About three years ago, I quit drugs and have lived a healthy lifestyle since. I do not drink alcohol, and I smoke one or two cigarettes a day. Three years ago, I was tested for hepatitis and was told the results were negative. About two weeks ago, I was tested and found to have hepatitis C. The results were “HCV RNA Quantitative real time PCR 8010 (high) and log 3.90 (high).” These results were given to me by a nurse without explanation other than to see a specialist. Further physician visits were denied by my insurance. I have no idea what this means, or what I need to do. I have no symptoms or discomfort at this time. What happens if this condition goes untreated? -- Anon. ANSWER: First of all, congratulations on quitting almost everything. That was the best thing you could have done for your health. Now you have to deal with a complication of drug use, particularly injection drug use: hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a slow-acting virus that affects the liver. The course of hepatitis C is variable. Some people have a very aggressive virus, which without treatment can cause permanent liver damage, ultimately leading to cirrhosis and sometimes cancer of the liver. Others have a much more benign course with no evidence of liver damage, even after many years with the virus. Your viral load, a measure of how much virus is in the blood, is fairly low. However, you absolutely should still go see a specialist. This is usually a hepatologist or infectious disease doctor, who has special expertise in treating hepatitis C. They will do additional blood testing, and probably a noninvasive scan of the liver to look for fibrosis, to determine whether there has been damage and the urgency of treatment. Treatment for hepatitis C is so good now (97% or more effective) and the side effects of the new drugs are so mild that most experts treat someone with even very benign disease. Treatment courses are sometimes shorter for people with mild disease and without scarring of the liver. Your insurance company is absolutely in the wrong to deny a visit with the specialist, and that decision needs to be appealed, preferably by your primary care doctor. In the meantime, continue to avoid alcohol, and do not take more than six regular strength (or four extra strength) Tylenol a day. You also should be sure to have immunizations to hepatitis A and B, if you are not already immune. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
ORAL HEALTH AND THE SENSE OF TASTE The human mouth has over 10,000 taste buds, located in the papillae, the tiny bumps primarily found on the surface of the tongue. Each papilla has hundreds of tastes buds, which contain the taste receptors. Saliva carries taste substances to the receptors and throughout the mouth. The sense of taste is a vital part of the body’s nutritional intake process. A loss of taste is usually caused by one of two primary disorders: parageusia, a changed perception of taste quality (diminished), or phantogeusia, a perceived constant taste present such as metallic, bitter, or salty. A dental health professional can evaluate whether the taste loss is the result of an oral health issue or an indication of other underlying medical issues.
At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our philosophy is not only to treat dental needs, but more importantly, to educate our patients on all aspects of their oral care. To this end, our mission is to provide open and free communication and the highest standard of care in an environment of health, mutual understanding, and respect. We offer complete general dental care at 6 Batavia City Centre, for the healthiest, sunniest smiles possible. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P. S. Taste buds regenerate themselves approximately every ten days.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Drain and oven cleaners: Many drain and oven cleaners contain lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide), a chemical derived from salt or wood ash that is used to break down other substances, particularly those that are sticky. Lye is quite caustic in high amounts and extremely alkaline, which can cause burns and skin irritation. Lye is also found in soaps and detergents. When handled correctly in safe amounts, lye can be used safely. However, it can be dangerous if it gets into the hands of children or is touched by pets.
Give Back And Feel Rewarded
THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

Love in A e Right Places
Finding
BY A M A N DA D U D E K
I
t was the summer of 2018, more than an entire year before the word “pandemic,” became a part of our daily vocabulary. One woman, yours truly, was about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime, changing careers to pursue the dream of writing full-time. I expected it to be exciting. I expected it to be challenging, full of new experiences and opportunities. It has been all that and more. What I never expected, however, is how much writing the Genesee Valley Penny Saver’s weekly Hometown Stories would teach me about love. • Take Helen Serafi ne, for example. Helen is the owner of the Angry Rooster Café in Caledonia, a business from which she continuously serves the community around her. Last year alone, she hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for area friends in need. She also created the Little Food Pantry in the alley next to her café where people can come at any time to select or drop off food items. Still, Helen saw more needs to meet.
• In Brockport, the Community Hygiene Bank (CHB), which has served the area since March 2017, became even more essential with the advent of Covid-19. The CHB provides personal hygiene and household cleanliness items to struggling families and individuals while offering prayer for all those who ask. Even when cleaning items became scarce, CHB continued to offer them at their events. In its new home at Jubilee Christian Church in Brockport, CHB has grown from serving 11 families to now serving approximately 150 families. Providing for one’s neighbors: that is love. • Further south, Tina Markle, founder of Your Centers Dansville, goes above and beyond for those around her. Your Centers Day Respite Program specializes in helping individuals requiring managed long-term care. However, the doors are open to everyone and serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Tina is a support for local elderly, disabled, and shut-in individuals, particularly during Covid-19. She personally delivered groceries to many people who could not come out and shop for themselves, often responding to calls from morning until evening. Recently, Tina opened a clothing “store” to help struggling families. She also organized a collection of goods for flooded communities last fall. Giving freely of yourself to those around you: that is love.
A gift tree, offered by Helen during the holidays, presented neighbors with the opportunity to play Santa Claus to others during the recent holiday season. Helen has also established (and continues to support) a “coat tree” as well as a container of winter wear such as hats, scarves, and gloves in front of her restaurant. As her sister, Mary Serafi ne put it, “If someone needs something, she is there. They don’t have to ask; she just does it.” Serving those in need: that is love. • Further west in Batavia, meet Senior Wishes. Th is organization serves a vulnerable and too often forgotten segment of our population: our elderly friends, family, and neighbors. According to Wendy Miller Backman, Senior Wishes Executive Director, “Senior Wishes was created to recognize that our aging seniors still have things they want to do, places they want to go, or people they want to see. We transform those dreams into a reality.” Senior Wishes has granted many hundreds of requests. For Leonard, an 81-year old Army Veteran who hasn’t been on a boat in 20 years, a Senior Wish meant one more time holding a fishing pole in his hand and feeling the lake breezes on his face. For Charles, a WWII Army Veteran who had wanted to see his cousin in Oakland, CA for some time, a Senior Wish meant a very special reunion after 10 years apart. Finally, for 89-year-old WWII Veteran Marco, who has been a fan of the L.A. Dodgers for as long as he can remember, a Senior Wish meant a trip to Cleveland to watch his beloved Dodgers play the Indians. Caring for our elderly: that is love.

• Sometimes, love is so powerful, it creates a miracle. The shutdown across all New York schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic had prevented St. Agnes School of Avon from holding three of its major fundraisers as the 2019-2020 school year was coming to a close. On April 27th in the face of a budget deficit, it seemed likely the recommendation going forward on May 8th would be for the school’s closure. “The next day, we formed a task force, and on April 29th, we put up a GoFundMe,” Principal Jensen explained. “Within three days, we had raised $100,000 thanks to community members, alumni, current and former parents of students, teachers, and even students, which was so sweet.” On May 6th, just ten short days after the St. Agnes School stood on the brink of closure, Father Michael presented the Bishop with a letter recommending that Avon’s St. Agnes School remain open. “The community rallied around our school,” Jensen said. “Our drive encouraged others to be ‘a light in the darkness…’ they lit up our sky!” Preserving local treasures like St. Agnes School: that is love. These represent only a handful of the stories that have poured out from across our region and into our pages over the past three years. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to recognize that our communities are fi lled to overflowing with generous people and organizations. Love may not always make the news, but it makes our towns incredible places to be.

S E V RA Hope for Humanity I want to give a shout out to a very special citizen that helped me in a dire time of need! This Friday morning after the dump of good ol’ Rochester snow, my car got stuck at the end of my drive way! I panicked because I had to get my prescription at Wegmans. While I was rocking my car back and forth, a friendly knock was heard on my window! There was a young man dressed in what appeared to be orange fur, cat like ears, and a beard. He jokingly said "Never fear! Snarf Maxx is here!" and he held up a shovel! As I sat in my warm car, he began shoveling the snow beneath my tires! And he wasn't bothered or distressed! He just began singing, "I'm the best!" and kept at it! He looked weird with his fur clothes, but good people are good people! No matter what they look like! Then he walked to the front of my car and told me to go in reverse and I was out! He waved goodbye and said "Enjoy the Wonderland!" This is a lesson to us all! Bless you Snarf Maxx! You are the best! Auto Help This past Saturday (2/5) driving was already an adventure given the recent big snowstorm and temperatures in the teens. Then, after shopping, our adventure factor really increased when we discovered that our car battery had died. Luckily, we were able to purchase a new one just a few doors down in the same Geneseo plaza at an Auto Plus Auto Parts Store. Mark at Auto Plus generously lent us his tool kit so we could complete the old/new battery swap. Many thanks for being there when we needed you! - The Bs
Common Concerns A couple of weeks ago a reader wrote about their frustration that 42% of survey respondents were unconcerned about climate change. Most of us want our lives back and are more concerned with getting Covid behind us. The volcanic eruption in Tonga will effect the climate in one day. Earth's climate has continually changed through the millennia. There is historical evidence of this. Most us are for innovations that will improve everyone's lives. The climate change New Green Deal makes the rich richer. I will believe these politicians are serious when I see wind and solar farms in view of the playgrounds of the wealthy. Currently, only the rural areas they don't see are marred by these eyesores. I love the planet. Let's get some real innovations all engineered in the USA.
We have Control To the person who claims that we cannot control the environment, here's a small list of the human impact on the environment that we can control: Not dumping millions of tons of oil into the ocean every time an oil rig bursts. Smokers actually throwing away their butts every time they are done so that birds do not use them as nesting material. Not flushing medicine down the toilet so that pharmaceuticals do not end up in our water. How about the amount of microplastic that is in the ocean that is currently being eaten by us because we eat things that eat the microplastic? Pretty sure we have control over that. Using more renewable resources than natural, and allowing our wonderful environment to do its natural thing instead of forcing accelerated climate change. Hey look: control! What you wrote makes you sound extremely uneducated. Please call up a science teacher from your local high school and ask them how you can help contribute to making our environment better.

Telecommunications According to the NDC, telecommunications technology has evolved considerably in recent decades. That evolution has made it easier than ever for deaf individuals to communicate. The NDC notes that telecommunications technology for deaf individuals is an umbrella term that includes telephone devices, platforms and services that are employed when standard phones are ineffective. The NDC identifies three primary telecommunications services: 1. Video relay service (VRS) 2. Telecommunications relay service (TRS) 3. Video remote interpreting (VRI) Regulated by the Federal Communications Commission, VRS and TRS are free programs, whereas VRI is a fee-based service. TRS is a text-driven service that, unlike VRI and VRS, does not employ video.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Is a Part B Premium Cutback Coming? By now we know just how much our Social Security checks are going to be for this year, after the deductions for Part B. The average dollar increase is $92 per month for singles. The Part B deduction has gone up $21.60, mostly due to the price of the new Alzheimer’s drug, Aduhelm, for a total of $170 per month. The drug costs $56,000 per patient per year. And we’re all going to pay for it, whether we need it or not. The news now is that the price of that drug has been cut in half, to $28,200 per year, after pressure was brought to bear on the manufacturer when it was revealed that Medicare might not pay for it at all. Additional pressure came from doctors who were suspicious the drug didn’t actually work and who wanted their own tests run on it. Since it must be given via IV in the hospital or doctor’s office, it falls under Part B instead of the Part D drug plan. Hot off the press is a proposal that Medicare will cover the drug -but only for those in randomized controlled clinical trials that will settle once and for all the question about whether the drug actually works. They’ll likely have a decision on that proposal in April. And what of our Part B costs, given the lowered cost of Aduhelm? Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra ordered Medicare to look again at the premium we’re being charged for 2022. There is the smallest chance it might be lowered, which has never been done before. Last year it was estimated that our Part B premium would be $158.50 this year. If that $170 is cut back to that amount, it would net us an extra $11.50 per month. What shall we spend it on? (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Rose DeWitt Bukater’s fabulously expensive pendant, “The Heart of the Ocean,” featured in James Cameron’s “Titanic,” was not completely fictitious -- it is believed that a rather large sapphire went down with the ship that fateful night. * There is a company called Little Miss Matched that sells packs of mismatched socks.

* Syphilis was a major problem in the late 19th and early 20th century. Doctors found that the bacteria that caused it was sensitive to heat, so they thought giving a patient a fever could help get rid of it. How did they induce said fever? With malaria injections! While effective in curing syphilis, some patients unfortunately died from -- you guessed it -- malaria. * Before mercury, brandy was used to fill thermometers.

Nancy B. Rider (Briggs) February 1, 2022 Livonia: At age 81, Nancy passed on February 1, 2022 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. She was born on March 29, 1940 in Warsaw, NY to the late Raymond and Katharyn (Walker) Briggs. Survived by her husband, Christopher Rider; her daughter, Sarah (Thomas) Lauder of Plantation, FL; and granddaughters, Katharyn and Madilene Lauder. Nancy is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Having earned an undergraduate degree at Wilson College and her master’s degree from Alfred University, Nancy’s career spanned 35 years teaching math at Honeoye Central School. Nancy was quick to volunteer her time and resources to those in need, whether giving her time to hospice patients at Teresa House, serving in various capacities at St. Michael’s Church in Geneseo or coming to the aid of family, friends or critters. Wherever she saw the need, she gave generously. Throughout her life, she was an enthusiastic lover of the outdoors and of all of its plants and creatures. Her devotion to animals was well recognized from nurturing ill or orphaned wildlife as a rehabilitator or simply taking in another stray cat. Nancy will be remembered for her quick witted, often whimsical sense of humor, brilliant smile and “gift of gab.” Her zeal for life was infectious and she lived her life in her “uniquely Nancy” way. We are grateful for the many unforgettable ways that her life touched and joined ours. A private graveside service will be held in the future at Temple Hill Cemetery, Geneseo, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the SusieQ Dog ResQ, PO Box 236, Conesus, NY 14435 or the Begin Again Horse Rescue, PO Box 28, Honeoye, NY 14471. WHY BUY LIFE INSURANCE? Facing one’s mortality and the prospect of leaving family members behind is not always easy. Death, financial security and planning for the future are all difficult subjects, but planning ahead can make matters much easier in the long run. Life insurance needs frequently come up when making plans, and many people find that purchasing a life insurance policy is a worthwhile investment. Life insurance holds an important place in overall financial planning. One of the most apparent benefits of life insurance is that it will provide a considerable sum of cash upon the insured’s death, which can be put toward the cost of funeral arrangements, housing and dependent care. Beyond end-of-life bills and care, life insurance can offer other advantages, say the experts at Allstate Insurance Company. Life insurance can provide a family with a financial safety net. When a beneficiary is named, life insurance can serve as an inheritance for that person or people. Heirs may face estate taxes after a loved one dies, and life insurance benefits may help offset all or a portion of the costs. There may be benefits to life insurance while a person is living as well. The life insurance information site Term Life 2 Go says that, depending on the policy, life insurance can be borrowed against to pay off debt, buy a house or live off of dividends from the life insurance investment. This can provide a source of supplemental retirement income. Gateway Financial advisors say that many life insurance plans are extremely flexible and can be modified as needs change. Death benefits may be decreased if desired, and premiums can be skipped, reduced or increased. Business owners also can use life insurance policies to their advantage. Including life insurance with the list of other benefits offered to prospective employees can entice top-notch candidates. Sole proprietors may use life insurance as a business continuation plan so that insurance proceeds can keep the business in the black until it is sold or a replacement owner is found. Shopping for life insurance requires careful research and an understanding of the products available. Consumers should have a thorough understanding of term and whole life policies, what premiums will cost, what the death benefit will pay, and if there are any living benefits. For example, living benefits may cover some costs for chronically or terminally ill people. Working with an experienced life insurance advisor can help people navigate the types of policies available to them.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
ALLEN-BAILEY TAG & LABEL IS HIRING
Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday. EMPLOYMENT

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE
Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
Get out of the house. Digital age networking is not limited to digital connections. Meetup.com encourages like-minded men and women to get together with real people in real life, using the internet to facilitate such connections. Men and women who sign up can use Meetup.com to connect with local professionals in their industries, attend industryspecific events and even establish their own meetup groups. A medium such as Meetup.com is great for individuals of all ages, but it might be especially valuable to established professionals looking to combine digital age networking with the more traditional networking they’re accustomed to.

Start a New Career at the Arc
STEPS TO ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures. EMPLOYMENT

Music lovers may greatly appreciate songs chosen especially for them in honor of Valentine’s Day. Therefore, as a heart-warming gift, curate a special selection of songs that can be gifted to a loved one. Even though it’s an inexpensive way to show you care, the meaning behind the gift can be profound. While “mix tapes” of the 1990s may have fallen out of favor, individuals who subscribe to streaming music services can do something similar by establishing custom playlists. Look to options such as Pandora, Amazon Music, and Spotify for inspiration. For those who want to go a little further, upload audio versions of several songs and create a YouTube video montage featuring meaningful photos. When considering which songs to include, think about “Endless Love,” which Billboard places in the No. 1 spot on its list of the top 50 love songs. This song remained at the top of the charts for nine weeks in 1981 and features the vocal talents of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross.
