call 585-768-7855 REWARD FOR RETURN CHOOSE WISELY IN SELECTING VALENTINE GIFTS Eschew overly personal gifts. If your relationship is in its infancy and you haven’t both mutually expressed interest to take it to the next level, avoid gifts that suggest moving in together (appliances), personal fragrances, couples massages, or other intimate activities. Wait until the relationship has reached certain milestones before getting too personal with gifts.

Magic Maze 3-D WORDS

Hi Everyone. I’m Smokin’ Joe. I’m a 20-yearold, 1500 lb. half Percheron/half Friesian draft horse. I live in my Mom’s back yard in a nice barn and paddock with my brother from another mother, Mr. G. I spend a lot of my time thinking about my next meal—sometimes while I’m eating the one that’s right in front of me! I also hang out with my bro, cavorting, daydreaming and taking the occasional standing power nap. Mr. G and I both think we have the good life because our Mom sometimes gives us treats for NO REASON! Ahhh! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

When doing your 2019 return, you must look at the 2018 return to see if you have to amend your return. The reason is the tax law changed in 2019, and deduction and credits were put back in the law and made retroactive starting December 31, 2017.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary.

According to the Federal Highw ay Adm inistration, crashes on snow y and icy pavem ent result in m ore than 1,300 deaths and 116,000 injuries each year. Winter driving can be tricky and requires a driver’s full attention, so protect yourself and your fam ily this year by altering your driving techniques. When a road is slick, avoid using cruise control to ensure you have full control over the vehicle’s speed at all tim es. It’s also im portant to never slam on the brakes, as this w ill cause a vehicle to skid and lose control. Instead, brake gently. Additionally, give yourself extra travel tim e and patience this season. By doing so, you’ll be sure to keep you and your fam ily safer during harsh driving conditions.

cancer and has just started her chemotherapy. I am concerned about her decision to fast for two days before and one day after each treatment. She weighs only 90 pounds, and fasting while you are trying to fight cancer does not sound like a good idea. What is your opinion of fasting during chemotherapy? -- K.B. ANSWER: In theory, fasting may make cancer cells more susceptible to chemotherapy, and there have been studies in mice suggesting this approach might have value. However, during chemotherapy, the whole body needs good-quality nutrition, and I could not recommend fasting for someone who weighs so little, nor could I recommend two full days of fasting before chemotherapy. Until there is clear evidence that intermittent fasting is of benefit, I don’t recommend it. Your daughter-in-law, in particular, is not a good candidate, being so very thin (assuming she is of near-normal height).

DEAR DR. ROACH: A couple of years ago, a letter writer asked if you knew anything about the effect of Advil on men with enlarged prostates. It seemed that ibuprofen decreased his trips to the bathroom. I have found the same thing myself. Taking two Advil allows me to wait five to six hours before having to urinate. Has there been more research on why this happens? -- S.Z. ANSWER: There is some more information. Men with symptoms of enlarged prostate often have increased urinary frequency, combined with incomplete emptying. This makes sense; if you can’t empty your entire bladder, you will have to empty it more frequently. So it seems the ibuprofen is letting you empty the bladder more completely. There are two major reasons for incomplete emptying, and different theories for why ibuprofen might work on each. Benign (not cancerous) enlargement of the prostate is one reason. In this case, it is hypothesized that ibuprofen stops the growth of cells in the prostate, but the exact mechanism isn’t clear. Reducing the size of the prostate can allow better, more complete urine flow. The other common cause of the prostate symptoms is inflammation of the prostate. In this case, ibuprofen’s anti-inflammatory effect reducing symptoms is easier to understand. The fact that it works so quickly for you suggests that the anti-inflammatory effect is more important in your case. Ibuprofen does have possible side effects, but two ibuprofen once a day is unlikely to cause significant problems. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My teen likes vegetables and eats right. He also drinks a lot of water, works out and doesn’t like soda. He and my sister have chronic constipation. They both now take a magnesium supplement and feel great. Is that OK? -- T.M.S. ANSWER: Magnesium is a common and safe treatment for constipation. A healthy diet, exercise and drinking plenty of water are good ideas for anyone with constipation, but some people do need additional help. I have previously mentioned prunes (or prune juice) as an option, but magnesium, if taken at a dose to ensure regular but not excessive bowel movements, is a fine treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. UNHEALTHY ABS

Most people are surprised to learn that the oral cavity typically contains over 70 different types of bacteria, some of which are harmless. Others, however, can contribute to dental decay and periodontal (gum) disease. When a “dental abscess” occurs, the buildup of pus that forms inside the teeth or gums is usually the result of a bacterial infection. In cases where tooth decay creates openings in the tooth that can lead all the way to the softer layer of tissue under the enamel called “dentine,” bacteria penetrate the soft inner pulp of the tooth, which becomes infected. Otherwise, bacterial buildup in the periodontal pocket surrounding teeth may lead to a “periodontal (gum) abscess.” Severe pain usually needs immediate treatment.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges.

Batavia Ophthalmology

When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Feb. 22, 1732, George Washington is born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. As leader of the Continental Army in the American Revolution, his success was due in part to his shrewd use of the “ungentlemanly,” but effective, tactic of guerrilla warfare against British armies used to close-formation battle-line warfare. * On Feb. 19, 1878, the technology that made possible the modern music business comes into existence in a New Jersey laboratory as Thomas Edison creates the first device to both record sound and play it back: the phonograph. * On Feb. 18, 1885, Mark Twain publishes his famous -- and famously controversial -- novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” Twain first introduced Huck Finn as the best friend of Tom Sawyer, hero of his novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” (1876).

"Let food be thy medicine"

is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions. For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-the-counter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-and-over demographic. According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful. · Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer's disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care. · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. · Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, canned or frozen produce tend to be high in micronutrients, including a variety of important vitamins that are essential for all components of health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advises eating dark green vegetables, such as leafy greens or broccoli, and orange vegetables, such as carrots and sweet potatoes. · Energy-boosters: Choose whole grains that can provide sustained energy by way of healthy carbohydrates over processed grains. · Bone-friendly foods: Calcium-rich foods, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, can prevent calcium from being leached from the bones, which contributes to conditions like osteoporosis. · Digestive system-friendly foods: The digestive system slows down as the body ages, as the walls of the gastrointestinal tract thicken and digestive contractions that push waste along may slow down and become fewer. Foods rich in fiber can promote proper digestion by moving food through the digestive tract mor easily. High-fiber foods also may help naturally reduce blood cholesterol levels. · High-iron foods: Without enough iron in the body, a person may feel tired and lethargic from a reduced production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the rest of the body. A lack of oxygen in body tissues from anemia can be serious, says the National Council for Aging Care. Tofu, spinach, lentils, pumpkin seeds, and fortified breads and cereals are high in iron. Smart food choices can help seniors live long and healthy lives. LP203730

GENERAL CONTRACTING

Cold Weather Is Here!

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

Add insulation. M any older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater. Page 19

KEEP RODENTS OUT THIS W INTER M any people mistakenly believe pests should only be dealt w ith once inside a home. How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Rodents, the most common w inter pests, invade nearly 21 million U.S. homes each w inter. Despite all the proper precautions, if rodents still find their w ay inside, they often leave clues of their presence. Droppings, one of the most visible signs, are most frequently found in kitc hen cabinets, along w alls, on top of w all studs or beams, near nests and in boxes, bags, old furniture and other objects. Gnaw marks and trac ks are other visible evidence of a rodent problem. Rodents w ill also sometimes reveal themselves through scurrying sounds.

New Wheatland-Chili Varsity Swim Coach Honors Father’s Memory by Breathing New Life into Team BY GRETCHEN SPITTLER

W

heatland-Chili Varsity Swimming Hall of Famer Rusty Dunn was undefeated in the pool. He never lost a meet. He was at the heart of the swim program during the legendary 100 meet winning streak of the late 1970s. Forty years later, Rusty’s son returns the Dunn name to the WheatlandChili pool. “My dad taught me everything I know,” said firstyear Varsity Swim Team Head Coach Greg Dunn. “I try to take the lessons that he taught me and use them when I’m working with the kids.” “Coach Dunn is a nice guy,” said sophomore Tyler Krull. “He makes us work hard, but it pays off.” Krull is a free-style sprinter in his second season with the team. Dunn grew up in the pool, working alongside his father. He learned to swim at two years old and, although he did not attend a high school with a swimming program, he lifeguarded in college and continued fitness swimming as an adult. Dunn is new to the swim team but a familiar face at Wheatland-Chili Middle and High Schools. He works in security at the District, is Head Coach of the Girls Varsity Track team, and Assistant Coach of the Boys Varsity Soccer team. As a result of these roles, Dunn has many opportunities to interact with students. “I keep advocating for the program,” said Dunn. “I try to talk to as many kids as I can. Already this season, we have almost tripled the number of team members from last year.”

has another reason to be excited for the future of the team. “Coach Brian Glass has strong numbers coming up from the modified team. I hope to roll their enthusiasm onto the Varsity roster.” Freshman Grace Braselton is in her first season with the Varsity team after two years on modified. “I’m improving, definitely,” said Braselton. “We’re really working.” “My goal is to make swimming fun for the students,” said Dunn. “I want to rebuild the program’s former strength and start putting wins back on the board. I am proud to be part of the Wheatland-Chili swimming legacy.” Enjoy this article? HOROSCOPE

Valentine’s gifters should focus on presents that will be meaningful to the recipient and something he or she may see as an indulgence.

CELEBRATE ENERGY STAR DAY - EVERY DAY (NAPSI)—Every Fall, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) celebrates ENERGY STAR Day to raise awareness about the benefits of saving energy today, tomorrow, and for good.

Puzzle Answers This Week

The typical household spends about $2,000 a year on energy bills. American consumers interested in saving money on their utility bills can look for the blue ENERGY STAR label to identify products—in categories such as electronics, appliances, smart thermostats, and lighting-that have been independently certified to use less energy. According to the EPA, outfitting your home with these products could save you 30 percent—or about $575—on your household energy bills, while avoiding more than 5,500 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

3-D WORDS

Utilities, product manufacturers, and retailers around the country join the celebration and offer special deals that help make energy efficiency accessible and affordable for everyone. In some communities, manufacturers of ENERGY STAR certified light bulbs work with electric utilities to provide low-cost LED bulbs at major discount and DIY retailers. For more information visit www.energystar.gov/SaveForGood. Since 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped American families and businesses save nearly 4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity and achieve over 3 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) All that flattery and fawning shouldn’t affect any decision you have to make. Keep your focus on the facts and ignore all the hyperbole, especially if it gets uncomfortably personal. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your Bovine instincts are on the mark about that “favor” you’re being asked to do. Agree to nothing unless you get a full explanation -- which you would check out first, of course. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A somewhat unsettled recent period should give way to a smoother time going through the week. Use this quieter time to catch up on matters you might have had to let slide. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Feeling a little confused is understandable with all those mixed messages. Take time to list the questions you have. Then present them and insist on answers that make sense. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Cupid can be very helpful for Lions seeking a love connection. The chubby cherub also brings warm and fuzzy feelings to paired Leos and Leonas who already share a special love line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Travel is favored this week, whether you’ll be globetrotting or taking a trip to a nearby getaway. You might be surprised (or maybe not) by who wants to be your traveling companion. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting advice on your next business-related move is a good idea, but only if your advisers are trustworthy. Get references that you can check out before you make any decisions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Getting a boost in your self-esteem is one benefit that comes with a job well done. There are other plusses as well, including being noticed by all the right people. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Make time to deal with family matters, especially where they concern your elderly kinfolk. Being there for them from the start can help resolve problems sooner rather than later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Getting a project started can often be difficult. But the good news is that you won’t want for lack of assistance from colleagues who would like to work with you. So, let them! AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A lot of work-related issues might be raised this week, and you need to be prepared for whatever comes along. Things should be easier when it comes to matters in your private life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) What might appear to be a much unwanted change in your life right now could turn out to be a very welcome event after all. Give yourself a chance to see where it might take you. BORN THIS WEEK: You exercise your strong leadership qualities well, which is why people believe in you and feel reassured by you. Sharew ith 259,20 0 readers!

On February 1st my husband fell trying to get up our front steps. My cousin and I were unable to get him up on his feet. A car pulled in our driveway and a young couple hurried over to help us. The young man and my cousin were able to get him in our house. Thank You Lucas and Jodi, you are our heroes! Carol & Jerry

Wow! Seems to me that you should look for another type of job! Seriously! I’m 66 years young, and at times, I do assist the cashier in loading my grocery bags into my cart. This is optional. I am a caring person who has worked in retail as a cashier, etc., but in no way is it something that should be demanded. Next, would you like for your customers to ring up their own orders (that’s what self-check outs are for) and bag their own groceries while on your line? After spending money for groceries, the least we, as customers, can expect is to have a cashier bag them and put them in our cart! You’re getting paid to do that; I’m not! I don’t want to go to your line, that’s for sure. Wish I knew where you worked! Get another job. I live in a small town, and GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A big thank you to a good citizen who noticed something and said something, and to the RG&E response team for averting a potential tragedy in my neighborhood. On January 29th, an early morning jogger smelled natural gas on Wheatstone Circle in Fairport. Fortunately, he took the time from his run to report this to authorities. By 7:00 a.m., Rochester Gas and Electric responded and determined that there was, indeed, a leak in the gas line in my front yard. The RG&E team went to work immediately. They spent most of the nasty winter day locating the faulty gas line and replacing it. It unnerves me to think what might have happened. Instead, our neighborhood

was blessed.

close to me, there is a dog that is put out every day early in the mornings before light and during day hours too, barking constantly at nothing. I believe it has anxiety issues or its owners don’t take the time to train it. I like dogs; they are all around me, but this one is the only one that barks nonstop. Have some respect for your neighbors who have children who go to school and some people who work late night hours. For the respect of your neighbors, take the time to train your dog! Enough is enough. People with constantly barking dogs can get a fine of up to 250 bucks. I’ve done my research! If you’re home all day and leave that dog out to bark, then you have time to train it!

blame on the daughter-in-law and not the son she raised. Why is she not having this conversation with her son? He is the one who should be making these choices and insisting on including his parents in family events. Maybe it’s time for him to put on his big boy pants and act like a considerate adult. What does it say about the way he was raised if he does not have consideration for his parents? This is not a one-way street. If you want this to change, then your son is the one you should be speaking to.

I had to respond to “Attention Daughterin-law.” She puts all the

I just wanted to give a quick shout out to my neighbor, Rich. His business is next to mine and for the last two years whenever it snows, he has shoveled our front walkway. It’s good to know that such considerate people still exist! Thank you for your thoughtfulness and keeping our sidewalks safe. Thursday morning, as I was walking to open our Main Street office for business, I slipped on the black ice and fell. If it wasn’t for Canandaigua City Worker, Kyle, I might have been one with the ground for a while. Thanks, Kyle, for the help and for clearing away the snow and ice. Stop into LVOY anytime, the coffee’s always on.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to an unknown Walmart Superhero! I have never had this happen to me or even someone close to me before, but right before the big game on Sunday, a knight in shining armor paid for our groceries! We were struggling to just have a small set up of snacks and drinks for a few close friends, and this Walmart Superhero made it possible! Of course, I had to ask what team he was rooting for, and in turn, we cheered on Kansas City in his honor! In light of his act of kindness, Kansas City won! Rest assured if I am ever in a position to pay it forward by an act of kindness for someone else, I will surely do so!
