39th annual

Pen-A-Poem CONTEST WINNER Lawrence R. Berger

Hungry, Hungry Hearing Aids

They screech like baby birds calling for their mother Feeding time They have worked hard all day Bringing me the joyous news from the radio: 19 cases in this county 105 cases in that The entire country is trying to "flatten the curve" As the world watches The stock market crashed Food is getting hard to find And we're just ending week one. But My electric bill is paid And the hungry, hungry hearing aids Settle down like swaddled infants when I put them in the charger Enjoy my little ones For tomorrow The dance begins again.

Our thanks to all who entered and all who voted. To read poems from the finalists go to gvpennysaver.com

Why PlantPaper? Replacing 10,000 rolls of conventional TP with PlantPaper means: • Keeping 10,000 gallons of bleach out of our bodies and ecosystems. • 2,000 square feet of single use plastic out of our landfills. • 120,000 gallons of fresh water free from contamination. • 750 trees kept in the ground. PlantPaper is free of: bleach, formaldehyde, fragrance, dyes, BPA and microplastics

PlantPaper is made with 100% FSC-Certified bamboo. This certification ensures that bamboo is harvested from naturally occurring forests, not from monocrop plantations on previously clearcut lands.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

As w inter rolls around, few people realize that pest invaders like rodents, cockroaches and nuisance w ildlife are just one foundation crack, open utility pipe entry point or broken basement w indow aw ay. The National Pest M anagement Assoc iation (NPM A) reminds homeow ners that the potential for pest infestations increases during the cold months of the year as pests seek shelter -- most often in people’s homes. House mice nest in dark, secluded attics and basements. In addition to carrying diseases and bacteria, causing indoor allergies and asthma attacks, they can also chew through dryw all and w ires, increasing the risk of electrical fires. Keep house mice from entering the house by sealing outside cracks and holes. It’s also important to keep basements and attics dry and clutter free to prevent nesting spots. Norw ay rats nest in basements, piles of debris and other undisturbed materials. They can gnaw through almost anything to obtain food and w ater. Like house mice, Norw ay rats also carry diseases and pose a risk of house fires. Fill any gaps or c rac ks on the outside of the home, and eliminate sourc es of moisture in c raw l spaces and basements. Raccoons often climb through chimneys or attics in search of a denning site, posing danger to humans. Not only can raccoons attack if they feel threatened w hile trapped indoors, but they are also a major host of rabies in the U.S. To repel raccoons, store w aste cans in sealed areas, or use an animalproof lid. Check the outside of your home for access points, repair loose siding or shingles, and use a mesh cover or cap for your chimney. German cockroaches live in small areas close to food and moisture. They can sneakily enter the home in bags and boxes, and c an contaminate food sources and spread bacteria. To defend against c oc kroac hes, keep c ounters and floors c lean. Vac uum frequently, and dispose of garbage regularly, paying spec ific attention under applianc es and sinks.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Upgrade walkways. Though it’s more expensive than adding planters and planting perennials, upgrading old and cracked walkways is a great way to give a property a whole new look. According to the renovation experts at HomeAdvisor, homeowners typically pay between $6 and $12 per square foot for new concrete walkway installation. Homeowners working on a budget can target spots where walkways have already cracked and fix those areas first before continuing the project piecemeal until all the old walkways have been replaced.

Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE REPLACING WINDOWS Moisture problems indicate windows need to be replaced. Condensation that shows up as fogging between double-pane windows or on the inside of windows indicates that the windows are starting to fail. If installing a vapor barrier in the basement or crawl space, ventilating properly when showering or cooking, or using a dehumidifier indoors does not remedy the situation, it might be time to replace windows.

ROOFING, SIDING, GUTTERS WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Curled, cracked or missing shingles may prove troublesome. Inclement weather can test the strength of even the most durable roofs. Even though many roofs are designed to last up to 30 years, some may need to be replaced early, particularly when they have been exposed to harsh weather over a period of years. Individual shingles can be replaced as spot treatments, but if the damage is widespread, a new roof may be necessary.

DID YOU KNOW? A report published in the Lancet in 2012 suggests that a lack of exercise now causes as many deaths across the globe as smoking. A team of 33 researchers representing centers around the world contributed to the study. It was determined that about onethird of all adults are not getting enough physical activity to keep them healthy and to prevent the nearly 5.3 million deaths per year that can be linked to sedentary lifestyles. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity. It’s also beneficial to do a combination of activities for exercise variety.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Explore poaching, broiling and grilling. Poaching, broiling and grilling are three healthy alternatives to frying. Broiling and grilling expose food to direct heat, so it is a fast method of cooking and may not be appropriate for foods that require longer cooking times to tenderize. Poaching is the process of simmering foods in water or another flavorful liquid.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Sudden Foot Pain After a Concert Becomes Debilitating

Serving Our Community for over 20 years. Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter and her friend went to a concert and had to climb stairs. They ended up walking about 2.5 miles in total. After returning home, my daughter had severe pain in both of her feet and was unable to stand or walk on them. She said it felt like someone was crushing them. The pain did not get better, so she went to the emergency room a few days later. A doctor there performed an X-ray and said that the pain was due to bunions, although they did not even look at her feet. She also saw a foot specialist who told her that the diagnosis was neuropathy of the feet and recommended Neurontin for pain. He asked her if she has diabetes, but she does not. They told my daughter that she will have to live in pain for the rest of her life. The doctor recommended getting some tests done on her nerves at the hospital, but she doesn’t have money to pay for these tests. What can be done to help her? How is it possible that the pain started so suddenly? She is in constant pain and is unable to walk. -- K.B. ANSWER: “Neuropathy” is not a diagnosis; it’s a name for a diverse group of diseases that cause damage to the nerves, specifically signifying the nerves in the brain and spinal cord or those outside of them. The recommendation of getting nerve testing done is correct. This does sound like neuropathy from the little bit of information I have, although neuropathies do not typically begin with exercise the way you described. I have seen several cases where muscles have become terribly inflamed and even break down after a period of unusually strenuous exertion (this usually gets better with time), but I would have expected the doctors to make that diagnosis. There is a compressive neuropathy in the foot (tarsal tunnel syndrome) where the nerve is damaged by pressure from muscles, bones and connective tissue, but this happening to both feet at the same time would be surprising. Metabolic neuropathies, like B12 deficiency, cause symptoms on both sides but do not begin suddenly. I’d be worried about her lower spine. I don’t know what your daughter’s financial situation is, whether she might be eligible for Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act, or whether there is a free medical clinic near you. I have had many patients make just enough money that they don’t qualify for Medicaid, but are unable to afford commercial insurance and don’t get it through work *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. LIFESTYLE CHOICES TO REDUCE CANCER RISK Be cautious of hepatitis C: Individuals should avoid behaviors that put them at risk of contracting hepatitis C, which causes inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis C can be contracted by receiving a piercing or tattoo in an unsanitary environment, through injecting or inhaling illicit drugs, through unsafe sex, or if you are a healthcare worker exposed to infected blood through an accidental needle prick.

PREVENTING SEPSIS WITH GOOD ORAL HYGIENE Sepsis develops when an infection turns on the body and produces a lifethreatening response. Sepsis can spread infection to other parts of the body like the heart, brain, joints, and other organs. Any kind of infection can lead to sepsis. Our mouths contain high levels of bacteria, and infections in the mouth can cause bleeding and openings where bacteria can take hold and spread. Tooth abscesses and infections can occur because of an unknown cavity or cracked tooth, cuts in your gums or other parts of the mouth, and, rarely, after dental work. The best way to prevent sepsis from a mouth infection is to follow good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily, flossing daily, and scheduling regular dental visits. Choose a family dentist who has a sincere interest in their patients’ complete health and who is up-to-date on the latest oral health care issues.

If you are looking for just such a dentist, we invite you to call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment. At our state-of-the-art office, all dental problems are dealt with efficiently, effectively, and compassionately. And any medical problems noticed during a dental exam will be discussed with your other health care providers if you so choose. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre, where we offer complete gentle, dental care for all members of your family. P.S. To help prevent sepsis, high-risk patients should receive prophylactic and preventative antibiotics before a dental procedure, similar to people with certain heart conditions or artificial joints.

I’m so glad to see so many people using the Erie Canal towpath and the county park trails in all seasons (we’re from upstate NY after all; if we shelter inside whenever it’s under 40º, we’d miss so much of winter).

Use your phone To the people who complained about a restaurant being closed despite checking their website for the hours of operation, do not blame the restaurant. I’m sure the restaurant had a phone number. Did you think to call the restaurant? Folks, have you noticed people developing a communication phobia to the point of paralysis? With all the technology today there is less communication going on than there was 100 years ago. This couple probably pays over $100 a month to have their cellphone, yet they don’t use it for what it was originally designed to do.

Byron-Bergen 6th Graders Explore Local Heritage with the RBTL Annie Landmark Project BY SUZIE WELLS

B

yron-Bergen 6th grade English classes participated in the Rochester Broadway Theater League Arts Partners Program, connecting schools to the RBTL with opportunities to see a live musical while making connections in the classroom to expand students’ understanding of themes such as musical plot and character experiences. This season, in conjunction with the production of Annie at the RBTL, the Arts Partners suggested the Annie Landmark project. Students researched local landmarks, exploring their community as Annie explores the landmarks of New York City. According to English teacher, Alyson Tardy, students chose a landmark, researched its history and why it is unique and important for the community, wrote a research report about their findings, and crafted a visual representation of the landmark to share with the school community. Some landmarks chosen were LeRoy’s Jell-O Museum, Rochester’s Public Market, the Kodak building, the underground railroad spaces across the city, Six Flags, Seneca Park Zoo, Genesee Country Village & Museum, Susan B Anthony House, and even Niagara Falls. The class learned and shared about so much local history and culture in this project.

for some landmarks such as Kodak or the George Eastman House, modifying articles geared towards adults for the sixth graders to use. But besides that, Tardy says the project was an incredible hit, allowing students to dive into authentic research, honing skills in a real-life, actionable kind of way. For many of the students, the field trip to see Annie the Musical at the RBTL’s Auditorium Theater in Rochester was their first experience seeing a live show, so Tardy found the field trip to be such a memorable opportunity. “Working with Arts Partners has been an amazing experience to help my students build a greater appreciation for the performing arts,” she says. Holly Valentine, Education Coordinator at RBTL, helped with lesson materials and coordinating the field trip, and Tardy says the partnership was extremely rewarding for all.

Along with the landmarks and their connections to the area, Tardy says students enjoyed learning about iconic local historical figures such as Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass, known well beyond Rochester. Tardy says she loved “allowing our students to have the opportunity to research and learn more about local landmarks in our area that they possibly have never had the chance to visit or explore. It’s important for me to seek opportunities to help my students step outside of the four walls of our classroom to learn about the unique and diverse people and places around us.” She says the students really enjoyed exploring local landmarks and sharing their findings with the research report and landmark mural showing the array of key places and people. Tardy says one of her favorite moments of this project was watching students create and design the mural together, pulling together the excitement and mood of the season with a snowy background that allowed the landmarks to pop. Tardy and her colleagues faced some challenges finding grade-level appropriate articles

Penny Saver

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Is Pet Sitting A ProfitableCareer?

Ruthy, a four-month-old Persian kitten, is a delightful companion with many playful ways.

Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com, Share With Us • Or mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m a high school student and I’m thinking about what kind of career I’d like to have after I graduate three years from now. I’m not sure college is for me, and I like being around pets -- my family has two dogs and a cat, and I have a flop-eared rabbit. I’ve heard that pet sitting is a good business to be in. Is this true? Can I do that instead of college? -- Caryn H., Fort Walton Beach, Florida DEAR CARYN: Pet sitting is a huge and growing market, because almost every owner is going to need someone to watch their pet at some point. So, it’s certainly worth considering as a career. You can start your own pet-sitting business or go to work for someone else. This is a job that requires responsibility and self-discipline, because people are entrusting you with their pets. You have to show up at the agreed-upon time, follow the owners’ instructions to the letter, and make sure their pets remain happy and healthy. If dog-walking is part of the job, you’ve got to keep them under control and away from conflicts with other dogs. You’ve got to stay healthy, because a sick day is not an option unless you have someone to cover for you. Start by visiting the websites of two major pet-sitting organizations: Pet Sitters International (petsit.com) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). They offer resources, certifications and more. Talk to your parents and your school guidance counselor about your interest. They’ll support you and help you explore this career option.
