HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years.
PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Having second thoughts could be a good thing, even if you’re determined to go through with your plans. You might find it worthwhile to take a fresh look at how things have been set up. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial matters could continue to be a problem until you’re able to straighten out some of the more pesky situations. Once that happens, the rest should be easier to unsnarl. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family matters once again take center stage, and should be dealt with competently and quickly. And, again, insist on others taking on their fair share of the responsibilities. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your creative pursuits seem to be running into a roadblock. But rather than blame outside factors, look within to see if you might be holding back your efforts for some reason. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keep that keen Cat’s Eye focused on relevant aspects of this new situation in your life. Don’t be distracted by trivial matters. You need the pertinent facts before making a decision. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) As much as you prefer doing things on your own, continue to accept help if you still need to resolve the problem affecting your project. Some cheerful news is about to come your way. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) While you might begrudge the added time it will take to get your project from point A to B to C, etc., you could benefit from the facts that will emerge over this expanded time span. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Regarding your workplace suggestions, be prepared to produce the facts to counter reactions from skeptics who feel your approach is unreasonable or even impossible. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Savvy Sagittarians will look for workrelated answers on their own rather than rely on unproved assumptions. It might take more time to do so, but the payoff is worth it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects continue to favor family issues, with special emphasis this week on changes in and around your home. Get everyone to suggest what he or she would like to see done. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A matter you thought had been settled might still produce surprises. Best advice: Continue to gather facts to bolster your position just in case you need to produce them quickly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) While your instincts are usually right when discerning ‘twixt truth and deception, you could benefit from doing more research on the new “prospect” that you’ve been pitched. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is only matched by your generosity, making you the sort of friend everyone hopes to have. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

MIXED MESSAGE Parents should understand that, while their children may eventually lose their “primary“ teeth, the so-called “baby“ teeth should not be considered disposable and unimportant. In fact, a childís ìprimary dentitionî (first sets of upper and lower teeth) pave the way for the eruption of the permanent adult teeth that replace them. The process of losing all the baby teeth and replacing them with permanent teeth takes about six years, lasting from about age six until the age of twelve. During this period, known as the ìmixed dentitionî stage, children will display a mix of baby and permanent teeth. Throughout this time, childrení’s teeth should be checked regularly to ensure that baby teeth remain healthy and permanent teeth erupt properly.
Our message is clear - making our younger patients feel at ease from the moment they come into our office is an important part of establishing a positive dental experience. We intend to make all our patients comfortable by providing a relaxing atmosphere and the most up-to-date procedures and equipment available in the dental industry today. We invite all members of your family to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P.S. Children have a set of 20 primary (“baby”) teeth which fall out and are replaced by a set of 32 permanent adult teeth.
No Screening Test for Bile Duct Cancer ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: A family friend has just been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and is 75 years old. The tumor is said to be the size of a quarter, and it was discovered after she complained of heartburn symptoms. Are there screening tests that could have detected the condition before the heartburn symptoms? Are there things that she could have done to avoid the cancer? My family members are frightened and want to avoid her condition. -- Anon. ANSWER: Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is a rare cancer that is, unfortunately, associated with a high mortality rate. There are no symptoms in most people until it is advanced. Since the cancer is in the bile ducts, the most common symptoms are caused by obstruction of the bile ducts: jaundice (yellow in skin/ eyes), generalized itching, dark urine and light-colored stools. Abdominal pain, fever and weight loss are other symptoms. Cholangiocarcinoma is not a disease that’s amenable for screening; it is rare in North America (it is more common in East Asia, where there are screening programs). Further, the available screening tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, are not very sensitive, meaning the tests will miss cases. And they are not very specific -- a positive result on the screening test does not necessarily mean cancer. For these reasons, screening is not currently recommended for people at average risk, although it may be considered in people at high risk, such as people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease that puts people at high risk for cholangiocarcinoma. Other risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma are mostly beyond a person’s control: other liver diseases, parasites and genetic conditions. There is some evidence that obesity and diabetes increase the risk of this cancer; however, it does no good for you or your friend to look backward. Never blame the victim. She should concentrate on getting treated. I don’t have enough information to comment on her prognosis, but the fact that it was diagnosed early -- apparently before obstruction of the bile ducts -- and with a tumor only the size of a quarter, are favorable. Treatment may include surgery and chemotherapy (before or after surgery). ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My 22-year-old daughter was diagnosed with overactive bladder at the end of June. She tried medications, but they made her sick. She was given a prescription for a physical therapist to work with her for her condition. Unfortunately, she has hit dead ends. How can she find a physical therapist to work with her? -- A.F. ANSWER: Physical therapists, like most other health care professionals, have individual skill sets. Pelvic-floor physical therapy requires a level of expertise that not all physical therapists have. I suspect she may have just been calling physical therapist offices near her and not finding a therapist with that expertise. A quick internet search found a good number of specially trained therapists in the area where she lives. There are many online reviews of physical therapists, just as there are reviews of doctors and dentists. They have some value, but I would be cautious about both overenthusiastic and overly negative reviews. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today. AUTOMOTIVE

Jill Garza • 585.226.5865 jillgarza@gvpennysaver.com AVON LIONS CLUB EYE SCREENING PROGRAM In 1925, Helen Keller asked the Lions to be the “Knights of the Blind.” Since then, the Lions have continually developed programs having to do with sight. The Avon Lions Club participates in a special program to screen children for vision problems that can lead to Amblyopia, commonly referred to as “lazy eye.” Amblyopia is the medical term used when the vision of one eye is reduced because it fails to work properly with the brain. The eye looks normal but for various reasons the brain favors the other eye. Over time the neural cells in the brain responsible for the poor eye do not develop. After age 6, the chances of developing those neural cells in the brain for the poor eye diminish tremendously. Treating Amblyopia involves forcing the child to use the poor eye which stimulates vision in the poor eye and helps the brain develop the neural cells for that eye. The Lions Vision Screening program (Screening Eyes Early [SEE]) focuses on screening children between ages of 6 months and 6 years. The trained volunteer from the Avon Lions Club will screen children’s eyes with a device called a Welch Allyn vision screener. The vision screening process is simple and non-intrusive. No equipment touches the child. The volunteer Lion holds the vision screener approximately 36 inches away from the child. When the child focuses on the screening device’s flashing lights, data is recorded. The vision is a free community project of the Avon Lions Club. For more information, call Lion Don Mastin at 585-330-5635. HOMETOWN Events in this issue have towns and dates where the screening will be done.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.
STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.
8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
FIREPLACE & INSERTS
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.
TOP ROOFING TRENDS (NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons:
GENERAL CONTRACTING HOME SERVICES
BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.
SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS Removing snow from a roof can be a dangerous prospect. Always use the appropriate equipment, which includes telescoping poles, rather than climbing on slippery roofs. This may be a job best left for a professional, who will have fall-arrest systems and nonslip safety boots.
1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat. 2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile. 3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coated steel roofing system, with over 60 years of research and practical experience. 4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air space between the panels and the roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat. 5. Save Money: A stone-coated metal roof could net you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent. Overall, a stone-coated metal roof can help your home look better, feel more comfortable while you live in it and be easier to sell when you want to.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Stripe smut The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

THE BENEFITS OF BACKYARD KOI PONDS Koi ponds can make for beautiful additions to backyards or home gardens. While many people are drawn to koi ponds because of their aesthetic appeal, there are many additional reasons for homeowners to consider installing koi ponds in their backyards. Ponds and water gardens can transform yards rather quickly. Ponds can add appeal to otherwise mundane yards and provide eye-catching, relaxing spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. Koi ponds have recently fallen into a favor with homeowners in North America, but these popular water features date back several centuries to Asia. Centuries ago, Chinese rice farmers began keeping carp in their rice paddies, and that practice eventually caught on in Japan. The fish started to breed and form slight color variations. Koi, often referred to as “Nishikigoi,” are actually descendants of the common carp, though the koi of today are more brightly hued and ornamental fish than carp. Koi can become a lowmaintenance family pet. These fish tend to grow accustomed to having people around, and will often interact with visitors at the surface of the water. It’s not unusual to have koi beg for food or take food from a person’s hand. They also may tolerate some light handling. Koi ponds also provide some psychological benefits. The sound of the water can be soothing and relaxing. Sitting by the pond may help alleviate stress, as unwinding next to a pond and watching the fish swim by can help individuals decompress.

Graphic Arts Instructor Comes Full Circle By Maggie Fitzgibbon
S
ix years ago, Doug Russo returned to his roots. Russo graduated from the Graphic Arts Program at the Batavia Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center in 1988. After graduation from high school, his career path took him many places, as owner of a printing company, and also a partner in a pizzeria where he was responsible for the marketing and advertising. He also served on the Advisory Board for the Graphic Arts Program. When a colleague shared with him that long-time Batavia CTE Center Graphic Arts Instructor Joe Burnett was set to retire, something inside Russo told him that teaching was the next step he needed to take to further his profession. He applied for the position, interviewed and was hired. Over the next six years, Russo worked to upgrade equipment, and update curriculum. Russo described the program: “The curriculum is a two-year program for 11th and 12th-grade students. The Graphic Arts curriculum strives to deliver highquality lessons, mainly project-based learning, to teach the future workforce of the 21st century,” he said. “The framework of the graphic arts curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge and foundational skills to continue their journey into higher education and explore as well as pursue career opportunities. Additionally, students learn marketing and business principles in the class.” Step inside Russo’s classroom and you will see a plethora of computers, all outfitted with the latest graphic design software. Like the majority of the programs at the Batavia CTE Center, the Graphic Arts curriculum is project-based. Russo shared his goals for the program: “My goals are for students to enter a safe environment, not only to obtain graphic arts skills but also to have the ability to gain self-confidence, problem-solve, be creative and innovative, and learn to collaborate with others,” Russo said. “Ultimately, I want to guide students towards building a foundation for higherorder thinking, and my curriculum strives to promote lifelong learning of highly-transferrable skills.”
Doug Russo, Batavia CTE Center Graphic Arts Instructor (center) surrounded by his afternoon class.
“A few years back, we had a student who had limited eyesight and was legally visually impaired. His name was Thomas Buboltz and he attended the New York State School for the Blind. Thomas came to class every day, worked hard, and did not let his disability defeat him,” Russo said. “Due to his hard work and his accomplishments, Thomas was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society. A great day for Thomas occurred when he was interviewed by Doug Emblidge, news anchor from WHAM TV13, about his successes in the Graphic Arts Program.” Russo’s commitment to helping his students succeed is evident in not just the awards they receive. It’s evident in his promise to them. “The most important thing I want students to learn, regardless of their background, is that education is an investment in their future and learning never stops,” he said. “Learning and hard work will pay dividends. It’s a way to overcome those challenges they face and a way to accomplish their goals.” The Batavia Career and Technical Education Center is a program of the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership. The Partnership operates as a Board of Cooperative Educational Services offering shared programs and services to 22 component school districts located in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston and Steuben counties in New York state.
Inspiring students is one of Russo’s strengths. Recently, two of his students were recognized as winners of logo contests.
Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:
“Chloe Schnitter won a logo contest for GLOW Women Rise organization and Fanny Venegas’s cover design was selected for the Rochester International Auto Show publication that will be held in March of this year,” Russo said.
• Clare Van Durme of Dansville, Says, “Together, We CANN!”
In January, Russo was recognized at the Genesee Valley School Boards Association’s (GVSBA) Annual Legislative Breakfast for his dedication and commitment to his students. “This award was designed to highlight programs that are unique and beneficial for students that go above and beyond what is required and provide a service that is needed,” said Patrick Burk, GVSBA Executive Director. Russo is proud of his students’ successes; one student success is particularly extraordinary.

Protect Yourself From Social Security Scams
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 2, 1925, the first nationwide highway numbering system is instituted to minimize confusion. Later, interstate highway numbering would be improved by colored signs and the odd-even demarcation that distinguishes between north-south and east-west travel.
(NAPS)—Calls and e-mails from scammers pretending to be government employees are widespread. Social Security phone scams are the #1 scam reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Chances are you, a friend, or a family member have received a call like this. You don’t have to be receiving benefits to become a victim. You may get a call saying there is a problem with your Social Security number or account. Everyone, regardless of age, income, and geography, is at risk. Scammers will try to scare and trick you into giving them your personal information or money.
On March 3, 1931, President Herbert Hoover signs a congressional act making “The Star-Spangled Banner” the official national anthem of the United States. Francis Scott Key had composed the lyrics as he witnessed the overnight British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.
Is It A Scam? The best way to protect yourself and your money is to recognize a scam. Scammers use intimidating language and often offer a “solution” to fix what they say is a serious problem with your Social Security number or account. How can you tell when it’s a scam? Social Security will not:
On March 4, 1966, Beatle John Lennon’s controversial quote is printed in the London Evening Standard: “We’re more popular than Jesus.” After a reprint in the U.S., Bible belt radio DJs organized Beatles record burnings and protests, declaring Lennon’s remarks blasphemous. Even the Vatican chimed in. Lennon eventually apologized.
• Promise a Social Security benefit approval or increase in exchange for information.
•
•
Say your Social Security number has been suspended.
Call to demand an immediate payment.
• Insist you pay a debt without the ability to appeal the amount you owe. • Require payment by retail gift card, pre-paid debit card, Internet currency, wire transfer, or by mailing cash. •
Ask for your personal information.
Scammers prey on your fears. The stories they tell you would scare anyone. No matter how horrible the story, if they do any of the above, it’s a scam. What Should You Do? If you receive a suspicious call, the safest thing for you to do is: 1.
Hang up!
2.
Don’t share personal information or make a payment.
3. Report the scam to the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov. And, if you receive such threats via e-mail, delete the e-mail and do not click on any links or download any attachments. Even if the e-mail or an attachment contains Social Security’s seal or names of real people, ignore it. Then, report the scam. Other Tips How about if Social Security needs to contact you? Generally, they will mail you a letter and only contact you by phone if you have requested a call or have ongoing business with them. Usually, Social Security will mail you a letter that contains telephone numbers for contacting them. You can also contact Social Security by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting SSA.gov. Scammers are always looking for the next way to trick someone. No matter how someone might try to scam you, learning the warning signs shared here can go a long way to protecting yourself and someone you care about from identify theft and financial loss. If you think you have been scammed, don’t be embarrassed. Report the scam to Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov and share this important information with your family and friends. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

Bri-Pen Senior Rides
Bri-Pen Senior Rides is always welcoming volunteers to serve as drivers, dispatchers and coordinators to provide rides to independently ambulatory Brighton and Penfield seniors (65+) to their medical appointments within Monroe County as well as to the Brighton and the Penfield Community Centers on weekdays. BriPen Senior Rides was started in 2017 and is sponsored by the Town of Penfield. It is a wholly volunteer, donation-based service that seniors, without any private transportation, may request one round trip ride or two one-way rides per week. GRILLED CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATOES (NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill.
“Real estate cannot be lost or stolen, nor can it be carried away. Purchased with common sense, paid for in full, and managed with reasonable care, it is about the safest investment in the world.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. President Cynthia (Cindy) Leaton-Favata Lic. Associate R.E. Broker
Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.
Grilled Sweet Potatoes Serves 3 or 4 1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges 1 ½ Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling Heat a grill or grill pan to mediumhigh. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, oil and salt. Arrange sweet potatoes on the grill or grill pan and cook until lightly charred and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through. Sprinkle with more salt and serve. For more recipes, nutritional information and tips for cooking with California sweetpotatoes, go to www.casweetpotatoes.com.
STAY SAFE AND WARM DURING W INTER W ORKOUTS Wear appropriate headgear. For years, many people subscribed to the conventional w isdom that suggested people lose 40 to 45 percent of their body heat through their heads. But in 2008, researchers at Indiana University debunked that myth, suggesting that if humans lost that much heat through their heads, then they w ould be just as cold w hen going outside w ithout a hat on as they w ould be if they left home w ithout w earing any pants. But w earing headgear w hen exercising outdoors is still a good idea, as the head is more sensitive to changes in temperature than many other areas of the body. A w ool hat you can pull dow n over your ears can protect them from getting too cold. Athletes may also w ant to consider ski masks or other facial covers that can protect their faces w hen w inter w inds are how ling. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

(NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. Learn More: For further facts about Dr. Adams and a look at her new book, go to www.drbarbadams.com and https://greenleafbookgroup.com.
BUDGET-FRIENDLY LOCAL ACTIVITIES: Bowling: Bowling is a fun, affordable activity that people of all skill levels can enjoy. And if everyone has a good time, look into creating a team and joining a league. Many bowling alleys host league nights that can also serve as great opportunities to meet people.
