FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

YOUR FUNGAL CURE!! TOENAILS

Salmon Orthodontics

Beautiful smiles enhance self-confidence & self-esteem.

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2016. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

If you feel a temporary sharp and sudden pain when eating or drinking certain substances (sweet, acidic, spicy, or variable temperature), you are experiencing “tooth sensitivity.” While switching to de-sensitizing toothpaste may help to alleviate the pain, it will not alleviate the cause of the pain. Healthy teeth rely on enamel to protect the softer underlying layer of “dentin,” while tooth roots are protected by gums. However, if the enamel is damaged, or if the gum line has receded, the dentin becomes exposed. Dentin is connected to the nerve that triggers pain in sensitive teeth, so it is important to treat cavities, cracked teeth, gum recession, and enamel and root erosion, which can all cause dentin to be exposed.

Your dental concerns are our number one priority. From periodic cleanings to emergency issues to education about products to enhance home care regimens, we provide our patients with the tools necessary for quality oral health. If you are as concerned as we are about healthy teeth and gums, call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL today for an appointment for comprehensive dental care. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre you can reach us at 585.343.4246. P.S. Tooth sensitivity, which affects at least 40 million U.S. adults, can happen to anyone.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Sneezing Can Provoke This Unusual Vertigo ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: After many years of various treatments, including allergy shots, food studies and an ear tube, I was recently diagnosed with “semicircular canal dehiscence.” Can you explain what this is and the treatment (besides surgery) to relieve the symptoms of inner ear pressure, dizziness and pressure and pulsation in the head? Are there any medications? -- J.D.W. ANSWER: Semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is an unusual cause of vertigo. Vertigo is sometimes referred to as dizziness, but “dizziness” may refer to both unsteadiness (a feeling that you are going to pass out, which medically is referred to as “presyncope”) or true vertigo (a sensation of movement when the person is actually still). The vertigo in semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is different from most other causes of vertigo because it can be provoked by loud noises, coughing or sneezing. It is caused by abnormally thin bone in the semicircular canals, part of the organ of balance in the inner ear. The diagnosis is confirmed by a CT scan of the temporal bone. The only treatment I have read that consistently is effective is surgery. An ear tube is sometimes tried in people who have symptoms with pressure changes. Medications used in some cases of vertigo, such as meclizine (Antivert), usually will make SCDS symptoms worse in the long term. Anti-nausea medications like ondansetron (Zofran) may help if nausea is severe, but have their own side effects. Vestibular rehabilitation by a specially trained physical or occupational therapist may have some benefit if surgery isn’t contemplated.

(NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness. DEAR DR. ROACH: My father is 72 years old. This year he was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate. For now, the doctor has inserted a catheter. My question is: What process or what treatment is best at his age? We are in the Philippines. -- M.M.C. ANSWER: Enlargement of the prostate gland is a common problem for men in their 70s and older. Sometimes it gets so bad that a man cannot urinate at all or the pressure in the bladder is at risk of damaging the kidney. In those cases, a catheter often is used as a temporizing measure. Unfortunately, a catheter causes inflammation, so it may actually worsen the prostate problem temporarily while still protecting the kidneys. Because of this, the catheter usually needs to be kept in only for about one to two weeks. During this time, medication usually is started to try to reduce prostate size. For most men, a benign (not cancerous) enlarged prostate can be treated with medication -- an alpha blocker, like tamsulosin, sometimes with a second medicine, like finasteride. If that doesn’t work, there are several surgical options. His doctor needs to be sure that the enlarged prostate isn’t cancer. A physical exam and blood tests may answer that question; other times, a biopsy is needed. There is no best treatment for everyone. It depends on how large his prostate is, any other medical problems he may have and the expertise of the doctor treating him. In the United States, the options include a traditional surgery, called a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP); laser-based treatments; other heat-based treatments (microwave, water vapor ablation and radiowave); and even more newer treatments that are less well-studied. In general, medical therapy is worth a try for most men before considering surgery.

Though certain elements of modern-day Valentine’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the 14th century, chocolate is not one of them. In his 1382 poem, “Parlement of Foules,” English poet Geoffrey Chaucer became the first to connect romance with St. Valentine’s Day. Over the next several centuries, the day’s connection to romance only grew stronger, and by the Victorian era in England, it was not uncommon for lovers to profess their affections through songs, poetry and even the giving of roses as gifts. It was during the Victorian era that British chocolate manufacturer Richard Cadbury began searching for ways to use the cocoa butter that his company was extracting during the production of their drinking chocolate. In 1861, Cadbury decided to produce edible chocolates, which he even sold and marketed in heartshaped boxes decorated with images of Cupid and rosebuds. It would be a few more decades before edible chocolates caught on in the United States, where they remain a must-have item for many Valentine’s Day celebrants more than 150 years after Cadbury first began selling them. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your natural Arian leadership qualities make you the person others will follow in tackling that important project. But don’t get so involved in the work that you neglect your personal life. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Aspects favor sorting through your possessions, both at work and at home, to start giving away what you don’t use, don’t need or don’t like. Relax later with someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The issues are not quite as clear as they should be. That’s why you need to avoid getting involved in disputes between colleagues at work or between relatives or personal friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’ll get lots of support from others if you own up to your mistake quickly and include a full and honest explanation. Learn from this experience so that you don’t repeat it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) There might be some early confusion over a major move, whether it’s at work or at home. But once you get a full breakdown of what it entails, it should be easier to deal with. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Creating order out of chaos, even in the most untidy spaces, should be no problem for organized Virgos. So go ahead and do it, and then accept praise from impressed colleagues. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Whether it’s for business purposes or just for leisure, a trip might be just what you need right now. You would benefit both from a change of scenery and from meeting new people. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While things generally go well this week, a romantic situation seems to have stalled. But you can restart it if you want to. Then again, maybe this is a chance to reassess the situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A meeting that was promised quite a while back could finally happen. So be sure you’re prepared with everything you’ll need to make your case sound convincing and doable. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace blunder could create a problem down the line unless you deal with it right now to see how and why it happened. Don’t be surprised at what you might learn. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time to re-sort your priorities and see if adjustments are called for. Be honest with yourself as you decide what to keep, what to discard and what to change. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Letting yourself be bathed in the outpouring of love and support from those who care for you will help you get through a difficult period sooner rather than later. Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You have an uncanny gift for reaching out to all people and creating bridges of understanding among them. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high.

Lessons, training, good food, water, shelter at all times, NO MUD! Great pastures, groomed trails, clean, dry, 10x12 matted stalls. Outside ring, board + electric fencing. Never left out in bad weather, 20 minutes from Rochester, Full care, gelds. only. $320/month with stall.

Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home. • A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

Need A Plumber? • All water heaters including tankless • High efficiency furnaces, AC & boilers • Water conditioning systems & Goulds well pumps • All general household plumbing • Drain cleaning

• A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

I returned to the co-op and happily found that a good Samaritan had returned it to the office, restoring my faith in mankind. Thank you!

Thank you to the Lady Braves volleyball coaches for a great, positive season! And to the parents for organizing a fabulous banquet at the end to celebrate. Everything was great from the photos to the food. Kudos! I lost my credit card while pumping gas at a Canandaigua dairy co-op. Later when I realized my loss,

Once again during a major windstorm, with winds gusting to near 50mph or above, about half the streetlights in town went out. It’s also clear that people need to learn the rules of driving! If you approach an intersection with a traffic signal that’s out, then it’s considered a FOUR WAY STOP. Please don’t just slow down or assume because you’re not on the side street that you have the right of way. Just stop, look, respect other drivers and go on your way again. As a grocery store cashier, I’m frustrated with the majority of customers at check out who stand and watch me lift their filled bags or heavy items into their carts. Not one grocery store chain in Rochester pays its cashiers a living wage, and this is physical, hard work. PLEASE help load your filled bags into your cart if you see them GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The Memorial Day Detachment of the Marine Corps League would like to thank all those people and businesses that donated toys or cash to our Toys for Tots campaign this year. We would also like to thank all the agencies that worked with us to distribute the toys to the children. We collected and distributed almost 5500 toys to approximately 1,600 children in Ontario and Livingston counties. The toys made a huge difference to children who may have otherwise not received a new toy for Christmas. Every child deserves a reason to smile

and be happy at Christmas and your donations made that possible for a lot of children. We thank you again for the great support and look forward to working with you all again next year. Thank you Penny Saver, for all these years of service to our community. I have really enjoyed Sudoku, the crossword and especially the history facts. Thanks again, Norman Craft If ever a beautiful send off to heaven could be for Danny, it happened. To all involved, you know who you are; what wonderful support. Hats off to Cosmos, Renee and helpers. What a great job! What a very heartfelt day to see everyone. Bobby and Margo

Some others actually complain! What a sad life you people must have lived to be so bothered by a Girl Scout! She has learned to be petrified of seniors! Thank you to the seniors who showed her kindness.

I hope you’re proud of yourself screaming at the local Girl Scout who sells cookies in the senior community. She chose this community 7 years ago because the people reminded her of her grandparents. It was a safe place to walk and she could learn lifetime skills which cookie sales teach such as money management, public speaking and decision making. Considering we have had permission to sell in this community for the

Did you not know that you would be expected to bag groceries, and put people’s groceries in the carts when you took the job? If you feel it is such hard work to put groceries in a cart, then you need to go the doctor to get a physical. Don’t try and make the customers who go through your line feel guilty because of part of your job! We all have jobs! Maybe you should get a job where you can sit down, like the toll booth workers.

Thank you so much Avon Lioness Club for your donation to the Avon Hometown Hero Banner program! Because of your generosity we will be able to replace some of the worn banners. We are a volunteer committee trying to hang the flags with limited funds. It is sometimes challenging to keep track of who is active and if a flag should fly, but we try our best. Thanks also for the warm support from the parents who have a son or daughter’s flag hanging. It is a very personal program for us parent volunteers to keep it going. Banner applications can be picked up at the Village and Town offices. Avon Hometown Hero Banner Committee

Anyone who is thinking about home improvements, do your homework first. Check with the BBB, get lots of references, but most importantly get a contract that specifies the amount for each part of the job if it has for example roofing and or fascia and soffit work. We were scammed by a contractor who gave us one price for work with different areas of our house. After he finished one part and was unable to do the rest because of winter coming on, we paid him all but a small portion of the cost. The next year, he wanted three and a half times more for the work than we had verbally agreed to. We tried unsuccessfully in small claims court to get justice because we had no written proof. We learned our lesson.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel Cracking The Code To Society’s Most Feared Disease

On Feb. 5, 1934, Henry Louis Aaron Jr., the baseball slugger who broke Babe Ruth's legendary record of 714 homers, is born in Mobile, Alabama. On Feb. 9, 1960, Adolph Coors disappears while driving to work from his Morrison, Colorado, home. Adolph, grandson of Coors' founder and the chairman of the Golden, Colorado, brewery, was kidnapped and held for ransom before being shot to death. On Feb. 7, 1984, while in orbit 170 miles above Earth, Navy Capt. Bruce McCandless becomes the first human to perform an untethered spacewalk. McCandless flew up to 320 feet away from the space shuttle Challenger while testing a rocket backpack of his own design.

(NAPS)-Even more than cancer, there’s one disease most people fear. The thought of falling prey to Alzheimer’s disease and to the inevitable desecration of the mind is something that can make even the bravest shudder. After all, if you’re robbed of your sense of who you really are, you’re doomed to live your last days without the dignity that defines you and that you hold dear. Perhaps the ultimate horror of Alzheimer’s disease is that it is as indiscriminate, merciless, and devastating as a wind-swept wildfire. As a result, a disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer’s disease has become a Holy Grail of sorts in the biotech industry. The disease is so ubiquitous, it casts a shadow over just about everyone’s family. At the same time, it exacts a devastating financial toll on society “perhaps even greater than cancer” with Alzheimer’s disease patients needing 24-hour care for an average of eight years and sometimes as many as 20 years. The estimated cost for caring for Americans with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is well in excess of a quarter of a trillion dollars per annum. This doesn’t even include unpaid caregiving. Also, Alzheimer’s disease is ranked as the third leading cause of death of seniors in the United States, surpassed only by heart disease and cancer. Approximately 6 million Americans have become its victims, and this number rises each year as lifespans increase due to advancements in medical science. Progress From Pharmaceuticals - Fortunately, a few pharmaceutical companies, including Biogen, AC Immune SA and NervGen Pharma, have come up with ways to potentially treat the condition and perhaps slow it down. NervGen’s medical researchers are working on what may become an important breakthrough for Alzheimer’s and other afflictions that are defined by nerve damage. Could This Be Modern Medicine’s Holy Grail? Until recently, NervGen’s focus has mostly been on developing nerve regeneration for the treatment of spinal cord injuries. In fact, some remarkable results have been achieved in preclinical trials, including one where the treated rodents regained substantial functionality in their legs after sustaining severe spinal cord damage. Assuming it also works in humans, the medical science world will be paying very close attention because there are no known therapies that can stimulate human nerve regeneration now. In addition, NervGen intends to commence a Phase 2 clinical trial for treating multiple sclerosis. The company’s drug candidate is expected to treat many of such debilitating symptoms as numbness, loss of sensation, chronic and debilitating pain, partial loss of movement, paralysis, and even incontinence due to additional mechanisms of action called “remyelination” and “plasticity.” The research team also believes that the same nerve-rejuvenating biotechnology can be adapted to treat Alzheimer’s disease, not just mitigate its symptoms due to its truly novel and innovate approach. The essence of this technology is that it unlocks a damaged nervous system’s natural ability to repair itself. Proprietary molecules “unstick” nerves and prevent new ones from getting stuck by interfering with synaptic-like connections so the nerves can regrow in places that are normally highly inhibited by scar tissue. Heretofore, no drugs have been approved anywhere in the world for nerve regeneration and remyelination, as well as improved plasticity in damaged nerves. Additionally, existing treatments are not considered very effective. So, the stakes are especially high for NervGen to create a blockbuster drug candidate that promises to even outshine any other Alzheimer’s disease drug. This is a wonderful opportunity to pioneer nerve repairing drug therapies that target some of the most devastating and pervasive diseases known to humankind. For further facts and figures go to www.nervgen.com.

The Jell-O Museum: A LeRoy Icon by Tim Malley

T

he Jell-O Museum of LeRoy, located at 23 East Main Street, was first built in 1897. Peter Cooper actually invented Jell-O in 1845, but a carpenter from LeRoy bought the rights to Jell-O for 450.00 dollars from Peter Cooper in 1897. Pearl Bixby started the first Jell-O factory in LeRoy on the same site where the Jell-O Museum would one day stand. The Jell-O Museum is fascinating in that all of the employees are knowledgeable regarding Jell-O. Lynn Belluscio is the curator of the Jell-O Museum, and what better person to represent the Jell-O Museum than she! Lynn Belluscio writes for the Penny Saver in LeRoy. She’s a regular, writing about things that pertain to LeRoy such as the Jell-O Museum. It’s hard to believe that this product, which sells all over the world, was manufactured right here. It is likely people have heard about Jell-O in even remote areas of the world. In fact, in many Asian countries such as Japan, Jell-O is sold. That’s how universal it has become. There are many different brands of gelatin but nothing quite like Jell-O!

Historic Jell-O Museum entrance

LeRoy has such a great history, filled with reminders of a bygone era when it was the birthplace of Jell-O. Who wouldn’t be proud? In fact, visitors to The LeRoy Historical Society can still find not only old photographs of the Jell-O factory in LeRoy, but also antique posters from early twentieth century of advertisements for Jell-O. Jell-O advertisements were also in popular magazines at that time such as Colliers and The Saturday Evening Post, among others. This fascinating history never seems to get old but just keeps on thriving. Today, the Jell-O Museum’s interesting exhibits of Jell-O’s early beginnings in LeRoy have stood the test of time, making the Jell-O Museum a LeRoy icon.

Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:

Inside the Jell-O Museum in LeRoy!

In 1997, the Jell-O Museum was rebuilt with the help of the people of LeRoy. It was an amazing spectacle as people pitched in to complete its restoration. Now, people can learn about the history of Jell-O, and they can also learn that Jell-O started to really take off in LeRoy. Certainly, Peter Cooper invented gelatin in 1845, but LeRoy helped put Jell-O on the map. There were so many colorful people who worked at the Jell-O factory on North Street in Leroy, such as Bertha Blood. What a wonderful name! Bertha Blood worked at the Jell-O factory for 48 years as an acid tester.

“To carry a care to bed is to sleep with a pack on your back…”

~ Yidish adage

It is seldom our good fortune to experience cares and problems that can be easily resolved by day’s end. However, it is best to make thoughtful and practical disposition of the cares of the day as quickly as possible. There is nothing more wearing and depressing than to greet the new day with the handicap of yesterday’s problems carried over. Whatever the nature of the problem.... big or small.... make an effort to work it out, solve it and then dismiss it from your mind. Prudent people have found peace of mind by arranging their own funeral services well in advance of need, in as much detail as they desire. This can include the cost and financing alternatives. Let us explain the advantages, without any obligation.

GALESNJAK ISLET This small island in the Adriatic Sea near Croatia has become an ideal spot for romantic Valentine’s Day getaways. The land mass came to prominence after its unusual shape - which looks like a heart - was highlighted on the app Google Earth. The island is uninhabited and privately owned. Travelers have inundated the owner with requests to stay there and have renamed the location “Lovers’ Island.”

VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the globe. Come Valentine’s Day, candy, flowers and other gifts are exchanged between sweethearts in one of the many traditions associated with the holiday. The origins of Valentine’s Day are largely unknown. Some suggest Valentine’s Day was initially a way to honor St. Valentine on the anniversary of his death. Others believe it was the Christian church’s way of Christianizing the Pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by millions and is one of the retail industry’s most lucrative shopping holidays.

WHY IS VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATED ON FEBRUARY 14TH? Sweethearts who want to keep their relationships running strong know that Valentine’s Day is celebrated each year on February 14. But even the most ardent Valentine’s Day enthusiast might not know just why this day designed for lovers to express their affections for one another is celebrated in mid-February. According to the Library of Congress, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14, though the date might have ties to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia. Lupercalia was a spring festival celebrated each year on February 15. The holiday was moved to February 14 after the spread of Christianity. The Christian faith had several early martyrs named Valentine, and each of them were celebrated with a saint day on February 14. But the unique history of Valentine’s Day and its association with February 14 as well as its romantic sentiments does not end there. The Library of Congress also notes that, in the Middle Ages, people believed birds selected their mates on February 14. As a result, it was not uncommon for lovers to recite prose to one another on this date. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
