NOW HERE’S A TIP

* The way some items are packaged these days, you need to be Houdini to get into them. When you’re dealing with blister packs -- items sealed inside a hard plastic wrapper that looks to be heat crimped on the outsides -- try your can opener. You can run it around the edge of stubborn plastic packages, enough to get the item out. It’s more secure than a carpet knife or razor.

* Want to be able to tell at a glance which key belongs to the front door, the shed, your grandma’s house, etc.? Raid your (or your wife’s or daughter’s) stash of nail polish to paint the tops of keys to color code them.

* “Styrofoam trays that come with meat or in the produce area are very handy helpers for lots of little jobs. If yours are clean and unmarred, wash with hot, soapy water, rinse and dry for later. They are perfect for sending a friend home with leftovers, as you can cover the meal with plastic wrap. There is then no need to return a plate.” -- D. in Indiana

* For a deck of playing cards that has gotten sticky, put it in a bag (paper or plastic) and add a bit of baby powder. Shake vigorously. Take the cards out and shuffle to get off the extra powder. They are likely good as new.

* “Tidy loosely folded electric cords by storing them in cardboard tubes. The tubes can be cut to fit from a paper towel roll, or you can use a smaller, toilet-paper roll. Even long cords can be stored together in a giftwrap core. Do not overfill a tube, nor wind any electrical cord too tightly.”

-- O.R. in Nevada

* If you have a juice spill on clothing, try club soda to remove it when the stain is fresh.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY

Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior.

While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

TIPS FOR BETTER BREAKFASTS

Develop a custom granola. Oats, nuts, dried fruits ... mix it all up to make a signature granola blend. It’s easy to eat dry or with milk and make a quick, healthy breakfast.

Enjoy dining out with kids

Choose restaurants wisely: Make concessions as to where and when you eat. Coordinate around nap times so children will be happy and well-rested. Select restaurants that accommodate children. Ask to be seated out of the way just in case your son or daughter acts up. This way you will not disturb other patrons.

Restaurants tend to be less busy right before dinner service and directly after. If you can time your meals to these off-peak hours, it may make for a more enjoyable dining experience.

Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal. Celebrating Over 70 Years 1947-2023 COLLISION & PAINTING

MAKE BEDROOMS MORE CONDUCIVE TO SLEEP

Insufficient sleep causes more problems than many people may know. Fatigue after a poor night’s sleep might seem like an inconvenience that can be easily rectified, but the long-term effects of insufficient sleep are significant.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, researchers have found a link between insufficient sleep and an elevated risk for type 2 diabetes. In one such study exploring that potential link, researchers asked healthy adults to sleep just four hours per night for six nights. At the conclusion of that period, participants’ ability to break down glucose had decreased by an average of 40 percent and reached levels that are consistent with those of older adults at risk for diabetes.

Insufficient sleep may be linked to any of a host of factors, including one’s bedroom environment. An environment that promotes restful sleep can help people suffering from insomnia or restlessness improve the quality of their sleep.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME

Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts.

One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

ROOFING & SIDING

DID YOU KNOW?

Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

MARCH 2023

This celebration is a great opportunity to learn more about mother nature.

In ancient times, kingdoms in Babylon, Egypt, and Persia spent a huge amount of their cities’ wealth on constructing elaborate gardens. What’s more, they pioneered the technology of irrigation systems, which became a vital part of modern-day gardening.

Gardening, Nature, and Ecology Books Month Fun Facts

The best way to celebrate Gardening, Nature and Ecology Books Month is to plant a seed. There’s nothing better than witnessing a flower grow after weeks of watering and nourishing!

What flower is the easiest to grow?

Sunflowers and zinnias are the easiest flowers to plant, manage, and grow. They require little care and attention.

Baking soda sweetens your crops. Regularly sprinkle a dash of baking soda on your plant’s soil to sweeten your tomatoes.

How to Stop Dogs From Roughhousing

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My girlfriend and I moved in together recently, and we each brought a dog with us. I’ve got a German Shepherd named Mac, and her Golden Retriever is Diz. Both are about 2 years old, and they get along ne. However, in the evenings they roughhouse in the living room. We want them to just settle down so we can watch TV. Is this possible? --

Laura N., Augusta, Georgia

DEAR LAURA: It’s very possible, even with younger dogs. And the sooner you establish behavior norms around a schedule, the better.

Diz’s playful personality probably balances out Mac’s serious working dog persona, so take advantage of this.

Wear them out: Both of these breeds are energetic. It’ll be much easier to keep them calm if you take them out for a walk or a romp at a dog park for about an hour before dinner and TV time.

Set the behavior: When it’s TV time, bring them into the room and give the “sit” or “lie down” and “stay” commands to each dog. Give them a treat only when they obey the commands.

Correct and redirect: When the dogs begin to wrestle or steal each other’s toys, tell them to stop. Call both dogs over and work on the basic commands again, then have them sit or lie down in the original spots.

Separate them: If they begin roughhousing again and no longer respond to commands, take Diz into one room and Mac into another.

is will take time and repetition. e goal is to get them to follow your commands for longer and longer periods until you no longer have to separate them. Be prepared to pause the TV and focus on their training for days or weeks. e long-term reward is worth it.

Men With Factor V Leiden Can Still Receive Testosterone Therapy

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have Factor V Leiden, but I have been wanting to do testosterone replacement therapy. I have heard that testosterone causes blood clots. Obviously, with FVL, that would be a huge deal for me. Is this true? Does it cause clots, or is it safe for me to do? -- R.C.

ANSWER: Factor V Leiden is a common genetic variant that increases a person’s risk for developing a blood clot. However, a person who has never had a blood clot, but who is identified as heterozygous (meaning they only have one copy of the gene) for factor V Leiden, is still not likely to have a blood clot during their lifetime and is not recommended for treatment to prevent a blood clot.

Testosterone replacement therapy in men with FVL does increase the risk of blood clots in some studies, but not in others. In the studies that have shown an increase in risk, the risk has been estimated as approximately one person per thousand treated with testosterone each year. However, the risk occurs mostly during the first three months, and after two years on treatment, there is no additional risk. Thus, roughly one man per 500 who has FVL and gets treated with testosterone will get a clot, according to the studies that show an increase in risk. This is a small risk, but a blood clot is a significant potential problem. So, the risk of getting a clot should certainly go into the discussion about whether to give testosterone replacement to a man with FVL and symptomatic low testosterone levels. Most of the men I have seen with this issue have elected to take the replacement.

MOUTHGUARDS FOR ORAL PROTECTION

A mouthguard protects your teeth, gums, tongue, andcheeksfromtrauma and injury. A mouthguard should be worn during contact sports and any athletic activity that puts your face at risk of injury. Mouthguards can also be worn at night to mitigate bruxism (tooth grinding). There are different options for mouthguards. Your dentist can make a mold of your teeth to create a custom mouthguard, which will be more comfortable and offer better protection. A custom mold can be made for either sports protection or bruxism prevention. Boil-and-bite mouthguards are molded to the shape of your teeth at home by boiling the mouthguard to soften it and then shaping it to fit your teeth while it’s still warm and pliable.

One of our basic philosophies at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is that our

Tree Tamers

patients must recognize the need to take charge of their oral health and do what is necessary to prevent, arrest, or control their own dental conditions. We’ll work together as a our office is located at City Centre 585.343.4246 insurances.

P.S. One size fits all mouthguards come ready to wear but rarely fit well and offer the least protection.

BATHROOMS: Bathrooms also tend to bear the brunt of winter weather, as mold and grime can accumulate throughout a season in which it’s too cold to open bathroom windows to let fresh air in after bathing. Inspect ceilings, tubs, shower stalls, and floors for any signs of mold growth or grime. Mold growth in a home can lead to respiratory problems and exacerbate existing conditions such as asthma, so it’s best to inspect bathrooms for any signs of mold growth throughout winter. If you have let that slip, prioritize such inspections come spring cleaning time.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

Thank you all for coming to our rescue on a Saturday morning with our basement water problem! You all saved our basement from extensive damage! Your kindness, extra help and care are appreciated. We are so grateful to you all!

An ER MD at Rochester General Hospital was a Gem

In mid-October 2022 I went to the Rochester General Hospital emergency room (ER) and got there about 6:15PM. I went there because at about 5:15PM I took my blood pressure with my home device. It registered 202/102 which, for an 81 year old man, was very high. After waiting about an hour a nurse called me to the ER examine room and found my blood pressure lower at 155/95. A doctor then came in and after many medical questions stated I could leave and see my own MD the next day. I advised him that I had a problem. My wife was in the main waiting area in the front of the hospital being brought there in a wheelchair cause she could not stay in the darkish ER corridor with me. Also my car was in the ER parking lot. Dr. Singh became a gem and a savior. He got a wheelchair and pushed me to where my wife was. Then he got my 80 year-old wife in the wheelchair and pushed her for 10 minutes with me behind out of the waiting room through the ER to the ER exit. What Dr S. did was above and beyond

If you can walk to get a shopping cart or handicap cart, why can’t you return it to the store or cart corral? The answer is just plain laziness! Instead, some leave them between parked cars or in front of their own car and then look around to see if anyone is watching before quickly scurrying away. Even with children, you still have to get one when you arrive. How would you like it if the wind blew one into your car and dented it? Bet you wouldn’t.

No delivery is that important

I was heading to [local town] about 6pm Friday and got almost to [local road] and someone with a red delivery sign on top came down [local road] doing about 60-70 mph and blew the stop sign straight across to [local road]. He had to be doing 70 mph down [local road]. Thank god there was not anyone coming the other way. I did not catch what delivery it was, just that it was a dark blue or black car or SUV with a red sign on top. There is no delivery that important to speed like that. Should be held accountable.

Lanes

Right lane ends, merge left doesn’t mean accelerate then cut off the car that’s already in the proper lane. Slow down. Do you feel you have to be in front? You don’t have the right away!

Hi, my name is . I love running around the house like a maniac, being around my mommy, and sleeping under the covers with her at night. I turn 2 years old this June.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

DID YOU KNOW?

Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* In 1862, the King of Siam offered Abraham Lincoln many elephants on the grounds that a “country as great as the United States should not be without elephants.” President Lincoln politely declined.

* “Digging a hole to China” is theoretically possible if you start in Argentina.

* A flower that smells like chocolate? Yep, but you’ll have to limit your enjoyment of this dark-red Mexican native to sniffing, as the “cosmos atrosanguineus,” or “chocolate cosmos,” isn’t edible.

Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation

One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

THIS SPRING, IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASS FISHING -AND YOUR BASIC GEAR

WEAR A BASE LAYER. A thin T-shirt is a must as a base layer, better if it is made of fabric that wicks away moisture. There are even some that are made to be water repellent and stain resistant with anti-odor properties for those in warmer climes. Since this is the layer that is in direct contact with your skin, you want something that will allow moisture to escape as you sweat.

Scam Messages on Cellphones

Somehow my cellphone number ended up on somebody’s list. Now I’m receiving daily text messages saying that my Amazon Prime account is about to be canceled for nonpayment -- unless I immediately click the link and give them my credit card number. Some of the messages say the account has already been canceled but I can get it back by -- you guessed it -- giving them my credit card number within an hour.

I don’t think so.

I’m on a phone list for Net ix as well. I called Net ix and no, my account is not about to be suspended. Said the representative: “You’re on automatic pay. If somehow a payment isn’t made, it’s our fault for not processing it.”

If you’re getting those “you’re late” messages on your cellphone, beware. Don’t accidentally touch the link in the message. It will take you to a website that looks real but is not, and just connecting to it can download a virus on your phone. Back out carefully and delete the text message. Take your time.

Don’t try to contact the scammers to ask to be taken o their list. It only veri es that yours is a good number and it will be sold to others.

If you want to report these scams, go to reportfraud. c. gov.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS

Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

Insulation is a key component in making your basement look and feel comfortable, inviting and dry. For the best results, install a rigid board insulation against the concrete foundation before you stud the wall. The board is mechanically fastened or adhered to the concrete foundation wall, preventing thermal bridging through the studs, offering a higher R-value and better thermal performance.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

Starting Anew with New Optimism: Local Artist’s Exhibit, Seeing God in the Ordinary, is Anything but Ordinary

Local artist, Sandra Ann McDannel, 61, has had quite an artistic life. A child of two public school art teachers, she graduated Cum Laude with an ASS degree in graphic art from Finger Lakes Community College, Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors in Fine Art Printmaking from Bu alo State University, and then earned an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Cincinnati.

At one time, Sandra Ann had taken drawing, photography, and sculpture courses at the Memorial Art Gallery, the Visual Studies Workshop, and several independent art studios in the Rochester area. She served as Teaching Assistant at the University of Cincinnati, and taught at RIT and FLCC, winning accolades including a Special Opportunity Grant from the New York State Foundation for the Arts in 1994. Her art has been in 56 separate events, including solo art exhibits, group shows, and juried events within which she won several awards.

When McDannel married around her graduation from Bu alo State University, she started a family, having two sons. She says, “I’m obsessed with beauty, mostly in people, such as portraitures and in our everyday life situations involving family as shown in many pieces shown in this exhibit.” She states, “I’m starting anew with new optimism.”

Grace Episcopal Church in Scottsville currently features seventeen of Sandra’s works in an exhibit titled “Seeing God in the Ordinary,” representing images from Sandra Ann’s past and present, dealing with family and daily activities. Also included in the exhibit is a set of lithographic drawings she did of a particular highway overpass in Cincinnati, where she did her graduate work. Referred to as the Highway to Heaven Series, shown are four images in the series of the same location from di erent vantage points.

Sandra says, “Life is short. If my art is to contribute to society in any fashion, I must stay consistently busy and involved. I love to draw, and I must remember that, as I have on occasion forgotten this truth in the past.”

She feels she gained support back through Reverend Johnnie E. Ross’ kind o er of an exhibit at Grace Episcopal. Sandra says, “ is show has gotten me excited about creating again. I want to thank the whole congregation for their kind support. e exhibit opportunity revitalized my passion for drawing. e support I received from this community has made all the di erence in the world.”

Open for the past couple of weeks, McDannel’s exhibit will be up throughout Lent. e Wednesday of Holy Week, April 5th at 6 pm, Grace Episcopal will host a closing reception to meet the artist and see additional pieces not previously shown in the exhibit. Ross says despite the title of the exhibit, “Sandra’s art is anything but ordinary.”

DID YOU KNOW?

AccordingtoGallup’s2021EconomyandPersonalFinancesurvey,theaverageindividual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY

Watch out for social media. It’s best to keep resignation plans to yourself and off of social media. You never know who is reading your posts, and bad-mouthing a soon-to-be-former employer can lead to hurt feelings and poor references. Resist the urge to rant about what’s making you unhappy at work or brag about a new position to your social network.

THE FLORIDA KEYS DELIVER EXPERIENCES UNLIKE ANYWHERE ELSE

(NAPSI)—The most significant worldwide travel trend today is individuals’ desire for experiential travel.

Gone is the era of ticking destinations off a “bucket list”; today’s traveler seeks personally transformative encounters with people and places that bring deeper meaning and lifelong memories to a vacation.

The Florida Keys & Key West abound in unique experiences that can be found “Only in the Keys” throughout the 125-mile-long island chain.

On a drive down the famed Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West you’ll enjoy the distinctive character of individual islands.

In Key Largo, take a 90-minute canal cruise on the African Queen, the original vessel from the 1951 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. A registered national historic site, the boat looks much as it did on the silver screen.

For a “hook and cook” experience in Islamorada, book a charter in the Sportfishing Capital of the World for exhilarating offshore, reef or backcountry fishing—then take your catch to a local restaurant to be prepared according to a signature local recipe.

Encounter rescued sea turtles during a behind-the-scenes tour of the planet’s first licensed veterinary hospital for turtles. Located in Marathon, The Turtle Hospital rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured turtles and, whenever possible, releases them back into the ocean.

West of Marathon, you’ll drive across the landmark Seven Mile Bridge, one of the world’s longest segmental bridges and the centerpiece of the iconic Florida Keys Overseas Highway.

Discover tiny Key deer on Big Pine Key. Endangered Key deer live only in the Lower Keys and can be spotted grazing during early morning and at dusk. The 9,000-acre National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect the diminutive deer and other indigenous wildlife.

In Key West, explore history with former President Harry Truman and author Ernest Hemingway. The Harry S. Truman Little White House Museum is Florida’s only presidential museum. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is where the writer lived and wrote masterpieces in the 1930s. Be sure to pet a descendant of Hemingway’s six-toed cat. Finally, take a selfie just 90 miles from Cuba at Key West’s red, black and yellow Southernmost Point marker that denotes the southernmost land mass in the continental United States.
