FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

Chickpeas are loaded with protein and fiber, making them a healthy addition to just about anyone’s diet. For those who want the nutritious pack chickpeas can provide but are worried that chickpeas fall short in the flavor department, you can enjoy the best of both worlds by cooking up the following recipe for “Spiced Chickpeas” from “Crossroads: Extraordinary Recipes from the Restaurant That Is Reinventing Vegan Cuisine” (Artisan) by Tal Ronnen, Scot Jones and Serafina Magnussen.
Spiced Chickpeas Serves 4 2 cups dried chickpeas (garbanzo beans), soaked overnight in cold water, or two 15-ounce cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/2 teaspoon cayenne 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 6 tablespoons grapeseed oil 1/2 shallot, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced Juice of 1/2 lemon 1 tablespoon dry sherry 1 cup sauce Chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley Preheat the oven to 425 F. Combine the chickpeas, cumin, red pepper flakes, cayenne, salt, and black pepper in a mixing bowl, drizzle with 1/4 cup of the oil, and toss to coat. Spread the chickpeas out on a baking sheet in a single layer and roast, shaking the pan from time to time, for 20 to 25 minutes, until the chickpeas are firm and dry. Set aside to cool. (The roasted chickpeas can be prepared a couple of hours in advance, covered, and held at room temperature.) Put a large sauté pan over medium heat and add the remaining 2 tablespoons oil. When the oil is hot, stir in the shallot and garlic and cook, stirring, until soft, about 2 minutes. Add the chickpeas, tossing to heat through. Stir in the lemon juice, sherry and marinara sauce and cook, stirring, until the chickpeas are well coated and the sauce is hot, about 2 minutes. Mound the chickpeas in a shallow serving bowl, top with chopped parsley and serve warm. Page 10

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.
TRASH CLEAN-UP SPRING 2020 TOWN OF WHEATLAND
WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work.
NOTICE TO TOWN OF WHEATLAND RESIDENTS OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE OF SCOTTSVILLE
For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees.
On Saturday, April 25, 2020 and Saturday, May 2, 2020 between the hours of 8 A.M. and 3 P.M. there will be dumpsters placed at the Highway Building, 1822 Scottsville-Mumford Road. Town Outside Village Residents may bring trash to this location to dump in hoppers provided. Proof of residency will be required. New York State driver’s license is acceptable. Recycling of electronics will also be available. All electronics can be recycled free of charge. BRUSH, TIRES, FUEL OIL, GASOLINE DRUMS, REFRIGERATORS, FREEZERS OR PAINT CONTAINERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. DUMPSTERS WILL BE MANNED FOR ASSISTANCE.

We Care About ut
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
IMPLANTS THAT JUST TOUCH THE SURFACE Because of bone “resorption” (shrinkage), not all patients have enough bone in their jaws to accept a tooth implant. Normally, an implant is embedded in the jaw, where it will integrate with the surrounding bone, and eventually hold the prosthetic tooth (or teeth) in place. If there is not enough bone underlying the gums to receive the implant, bone may be grafted to the implant site. If grafting is not a feasible option, a “subperiosteal” implant may be used. This type of implant is a metal framework placed beneath the gums where it sits atop the bone, somewhat like a saddle. A subperiosteal implant must be custommade to fit the contours of an individual’s jaw.
We will be glad to discuss implants and other available options of keeping your smile a beautiful, happy one. We believe in an informed patient, and we promise to provide you with information regarding all aspects of your dental care. You can always count on our experienced, honest recommendation for the treatment best suited to your dental needs. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre, our goals are the same as yours – a healthy mouth and a brilliant smile. Call 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P.S. Small screws may be used to hold a subperiosteal implant in place.

Thanks to technological advances in detection and new treatment approaches, women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer can opt to keep their breast with less invasive surgery and with breastconserving treatments. In fact, the American Cancer Society estimates that 59 percent of women with an early breast cancer diagnosis (Stage 1 or 2) undergo breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) versus 36 percent of women who decide to have a total mastectomy. Research has shown that breast-conserving surgery followed by radiation therapy is as effective as a mastectomy in decreasing the risk of local cancer recurrence for most women*. “One way that breast-conserving surgery is now easier is due to a new innovation in breast cancer treatment—SAVI SCOUT® Radar Localization. This resolves one of the most difficult aspects of breast conservation surgery by eliminating the need to place a wire inside of the breast tissue to locate a tumor,” said Dr. Barry Rosen, Chairman of Department of Surgery at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Chicago; and Assistant Professor, University of Illinois College of Medicine. “Many of my patients who have undergone a procedure with SCOUT® are impressed with the benefits, including shorter procedure times and decreased anxiety.” Prior to 2015, surgeons generally relied on wire localization to locate a tumor during a lumpectomy procedure. With wire localization, a radiologist guides a thin, hooked wire through the skin and into the tumor on the day of surgery. The surgeon then uses the wire to identify the area of tissue targeted for removal. This resulted in long days of surgery for women, with two procedures performed on the same day. With SCOUT, a tiny reflector, the size of a grain of rice, is placed at the tumor site at any time during the patient’s treatment and well in advance of surgery. The SCOUT Wire-Free Radar Breast Localization System uses safe, nonradioactive, radar technology to provide real-time and precise surgical guidance during the surgery. The ability to precisely locate tumors increases the probability of complete cancer removal and reduces the likelihood of needing follow-up surgery, allowing any additional treatments to occur sooner. In addition, the ability to strategically plan the incision may result in better cosmetic outcomes. SCOUT is also used to effectively localize lymph nodes and tumors prior to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (chemotherapy administered prior to surgery) and can be used with any type of imaging over the course of a patient’s care. More than 350 hospitals have implemented the SCOUT System, and to date, over 45,000 women have had a wire-free localization experience. Learn More: If you would like to learn more about SAVI SCOUT or the SCOUTCare™ program, visit www.ciannamedical.com. *American Cancer Society. CROSSWORD How to clean when faced with a shortage of supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra essentials — resulting in shortages. Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers.

The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice.
17 18 19 21 24
Hot water and soap The reason hand-washing is at the top of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease.
25 26 30 31 32 33
Hydrogen peroxide As people clear isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On Monday, the 9th of March, my family and I went to Krony’s. We always enjoy the delicious pizza and what I call calzones. Of course, what would Krony’s be without Joey. He simply is the best manager I have ever seen in a restaurant. Joey is just a great all-around person. He goes out of his way to make sure that everything is great. He is always so personable no matter how busy he may
My child is not perfect; no child is. However, when another child threatens to physically assault my child, that is one thing. If you follow through, there will be legal consequences. I will call the police on your child. This is not the 1980’s. Physical assault is a big deal, and if you, as a parent, allow your child to conduct themselves this way, then maybe you need to be investigated as well. I don’t think your child will be a tough guy to the police if and when they get called. That would be just step one in a nightmare GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

be. Joey makes sure to give his customers the attention they need to make them feel like they are family. Of course, Steve (Charlie), is very nice, as well. Joey, thanks for the garlic knots and stay as sweet as you are. In a world where people do not go out of their way to help others, it is delightful to know you.
I’d like to thank my employer, Bristol ID. By implementing a few new procedures and policies, they are doing their best to make it a safe environment during this uncertain time. Big thanks for all the staff of the local grocery stores for supporting our communities at this time!
Hannah Emmick is so wonderful and should be recognized for her caring and helpful spirit. Love that she is willing to help families with water and food. Love her! I emptied my pockets for a man to have meals for legal situation for you and your child. Teach your child to handle situations with class and communication, but I understand for some parents, conflict and police blotter fame is all they know. That inherited trait shines very brightly through your child. Too bad. Last month, I went into the grocery store, and while looking around, I saw a little one in her daddy’s arms. I noticed she had on a real cute dress with a matching hair band. I stopped to say ‘hi’ and left. As I was returning my cart mom, dad (each wearing coats) and their child were also leaving. To my shock, the toddler was still wearing only the light little dress with absolutely nothing else on her, no coat, blanket, etc. If they thought

a week. He went straight across the street to Burger King. Do what you can for others.
While checking out at Wegman’s last Sunday morning, I discovered I had forgotten my wallet. Facing embarrassment, I asked the girl at the checkout if I could it was not that cold enough for their daughter’s health, then why did they bother wearing coats themselves? Wake up parents and use some common sense! At least bring a warm blanket next time! Have you ever heard of pneumonia? I’d like to “rant” about a local corner gas station. call my wife hoping she could rescue me by phone. While on the phone, the girl proceeded to check out my purchases. I asked her to stop, but she told me that the kind man behind me was paying for my goods. I insisted on repaying him, but he said that it was his way of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. customer. I exclusively used them even though I knew it was the highest place for prices around and spent $35 to $45 while stopping there and only there three times a week. I liked the two older men in charge. The mechanic, though very good, would make unnecessary comments about me or what I brought in to break the ice or amuse them. Even when they hired a new mechanic, his conversation became unprofessional as well. It hurt my feelings; they should’ve refrained from condescending comments. I tried another gas station, and it was run by all women. They were warm, friendly, talkative, respectful and apologetic when they were busy. I will now give my local business to them!

(NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents.

2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. Learn More: For further facts and tips about good driving from the experts at Driving-Tests, founded on the universal belief that everyone can be a safe driver, go to https://driving-tests.org. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 30, 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward signs a treaty with Russia to buy Alaska for $7 million. Despite the bargain price of roughly 2 cents an acre, the Alaskan purchase was ridiculed as "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's icebox." On March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower is dedicated in Paris in a ceremony presided over by Gustave Eiffel, its designer, and French Prime Minister Pierre Tirard. At 984 feet, the Eiffel Tower remained the world's tallest man-made structure until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930. On April 1, 1970, President Richard Nixon signs legislation officially banning cigarette ads on television and radio. Nixon, who was an avid pipe smoker, supported the legislation at the increasing insistence of public health advocates.
Healthy eating options for seniors “Let food be thy medicine” is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions. For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-the-counter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-and-over demographic. According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful. · Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care. · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. See next week’s article for more smart food choices for seniors.

GENERAL CONTRACTING HOROSCOPE
BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An unexpected problem should be handled as quickly as possible so that it doesn’t cause too much of a delay. Someone who knows what you’re facing could provide needed advice. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unsettling situation seems to be taking forever to be resolved. Fortunately, your Bovine aptitude for patience is strong this week, so you’ll be more than able to wait it out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a stand against an uncalled-for situation involving a friend or co-worker isn’t easy, but somehow you’ll rise to the challenge and do it. Rely on advice from someone you trust. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) There are still some questions on all sides that need to be dealt with in order to allow hurt feelings to heal. Get your workplace tasks done early so that you can devote more time to loved ones. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Consider a new spring makeover that will show all you Leos and Leonas in your best light. A new hairdo and some fashionable new clothes can help put a fresh glow on your image. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some stormy, emotional weather can blow up in the workplace when an irate co-worker has strong words for you. But if you believe right is on your side, you’ll be able to ride it out. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Creating more balance in your life is especially important now so that you’re not distracted when you get into projects that will make demands on both your physical and mental energies. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) As much as you enjoy being right when others are not, show your generous side by offering to use what you know to everyone’s benefit. This way, you gain admirers and avoid resentment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week for the Archer to aim at healing relationships. Whether it’s at home, at work or among your friends, get everyone to set things straight and make a fresh start. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although you like things done your way, this is a good time to listen to ideas from others. You might even find yourself agreeing with one or more of their suggestions. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Aspects favor positive action to reclaim your ideas from someone who might want the glory without doing any of the work. Expect to find many people rallying to support you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might feel uneasy about taking that step forward at work or in your private life. But who knows better than you that while treading water keeps you afloat, it doesn’t get you anywhere. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of creating positive attitudes and making people feel good about themselves. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Woody & Friends is a Remarkable Local Legacy By Tim Malley
W
oody and Friends is a local group that plays nursing homes and assisted living facilities as well as the VA in Batavia, NY. For all intents and purposes, Woody and Friends is Rick Nicholson. Rick Nicholson has been with Woody and Friends since its inception all the way back in 1981 when Rick Nicholson formed the group in Brockport, NY. Many of the group members have changed faces over the years, but the one constant has been Rick Nicholson. Rick Nicholson is a superb guitarist. I had many discussions with him regarding music over the years, and one thing I know just by talking to Rick is that he loves The Moody Blues. In fact, I believe that Rick’s main musical influence is The Moody Blues. I also am a huge fan of the band because The Moody Blues have a sound that just can’t be duplicated. The early Moody Blues, which was led by Denny Laine, was around from 1964 to 1966. It consisted of Denny Laine, Clint Warwicke, Graeme Edge, Mike Pinder and Ray Thomas. This was the first incarnation of The Moody Blues, and with this first incarnation of The Moody Blues, the band scored a huge hit with the song “Go Now” which was released in 1965. “Go Now” was originally written by Bessie Banks. After “Go Now,” The Moody Blues struggled to make the charts. Then, in 1966, Denny Laine and Clint Warwicke left The Moody Blues and, to replace both Denny Laine and Clint Warwicke, The Moody Blues hired Justin Hayward and John Lodge. Soon, The Moody Blues would focus entirely on a lush orchestrated sound when Denny Laine led the Moody Blues. It was with this sound that the Moody Blues scored their most popular hits such as “Nights in White Satin” and “Tuesday Afternoon” among many other mega hits that represented The Moody Blues’ second incarnation. I’ll never forget when Rick Nicholson gave me his only copy of a great The Moody Blues CD that originally was released in 1969. It was of course “On the Threshold of a Dream” which is just as fantastic as when it was first released. Still, Rick can play all different kinds of music, not just The Moody Blues. A lot of times, he and Woody and Friends have sing-a-longs when they visit the places they go to, such as the VA in Batavia. Rick and his band will sing excellent versions of songs such as “To Catch the Wind” by Donovan, “Galveston” by Glen Campbell, “The Camptown Races” by Don Gibson, “Stand by your Man” by Tammy Wynette, and “Girl” by The Beatles, among many other musical artists that Woody and Friends cover and cover well. Incidentally, when I was talking to Rick Nicholson about Glen Campbell, he said what made that trademark booming sound in Campbell's song “Galveston” was that Glen Campbell actually used a compressor with his

guitar to create it. I thought that little tidbit of information was fascinating. Nicholson's Woody and Friends presently consists of Rick playing with two other musicians, a harmony singer by the name of Bonnie and an excellent rhythm guitarist by the name of Dennis. I always enjoyed Rick Nicholson's and Woody and Friends' music because I always found it engaging and fun. So next time you’re at a local assisted living facility, a local nursing home or even the VA in Batavia among the many other places they play, maybe you will hear Woody and Friends and realize they are not just a good band, but they are, in fact, a great band. This is why, in my view, Woody and Friends are a local legend because their music will never go out of style.

According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines. Page 33

But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.

BUILD YOUR NETWORK TO LAND A NEW JOB Update your résumé. Update your résumé as often as you deem necessary. Colleagues you’ve worked with in the past who are within your LinkedIn network may periodically view your profile, and an updated résumé is a great way to keep them abreast of how your career is going. If they can see what you’ve accomplished since you last worked with them, they might be more inclined to reconnect or recommend you for a job opening.
EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities.
Puzzle Answers This Week
Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify. Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.
KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE
Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment. For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.” It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.” Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts. “I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.” To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
