HOW TO BE MORE COURTEOUS WHILE DINING OUT
If something is not right with the meal, mention it early so it can be remedied. Do not eat an entire meal before filing a complaint with the server.
WARM UP WITH STEW ON COLD WINTER NIGHTS
Serves 6 generously
2 pounds beef shoulder, cut into 2-inch pieces (see note)
1 onion, cut into large dice
2 carrots, cut into large dice
2 stalks celery, cut into large dice
2 dried bay leaves
4 sprigs fresh thyme
7 sprigs fresh flat-leaf parsley
1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns
1 bottle red wine
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon canola oil
1/4 pound slab bacon, cut into large dice
1/2 stick (4 tablespoons)
unsalted butter
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
4 cups beef stock
2 large Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into large dice
1. Put the beef chunks in a large bowl and add the onion, carrots and celery. In a piece of cheesecloth, tie together a bouquet of garni of the bay leaves, thyme, parsley, and peppercorns and add to the bowl. Pour in the bottle of wine. Cover and let marinate in the refrigerator overnight, stirring the mixture once or twice over the course of the evening.
2. The next day, remove the meat from the marinade and dry the pieces in a shallow pan lined with several layers of paper towels. Remove the vegetables and reserve them separately, along with the bouquet garni. Reserve the wine. Season the beef with salt and pepper.
3. In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, warm the canola oil. Add the bacon and cook until browned and the fat is rendered, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon from the pot and set aside. In single-layer batches, brown the beef chunks on all sides, then set aside. Brown the reserved onions, carrots and celery, about 10 minutes. Add additional canola oil to the pot if there is not enough bacon fat to brown all of the beef and vegetables.
4. Return the beef to the pot with the vegetables and add 3 tablespoons of the butter. Sprinkle with the flour and cook, stirring, for about 3 minutes. Add the reserved wine and deglaze the pot, scraping up all the browned bits from the bottom. Add the bacon and stock and bring to a boil. Skim off the scum that rises to the top; once the scum is removed, add the bouquet garni. Simmer, covered, over medium-low heat until the beef is very tender, about 11/2 hours. Remove the bouquet garni.
5. Toward the end of the beef’s cooking time, bring the potatoes to a boil in a separate saucepan covered generously with salted water. Cook until tender, about 15 minutes.
6. In a medium sauté pan, melt 3 tablespoons of the butter over medium-high heat. Add the pearl onions and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the mushrooms to the onions and cook until both onions and mushrooms are golden brown, about 5 minutes longer. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
7. Serve the stew in bowls, garnished with the pearl onions, mushrooms and potatoes.
Note: When shopping for beef, you won’t find a cut labeled “beef shoulder” - what you want is either a chuck roast of some sort or, from a bit lower on the shoulder, a cut labeled either “arm roast” or “round bone roast.”

ARNOLD, CHURCHVILLE DOG, NOMINATED FOR ROC TOP PET
BY LORI BRUTON
He may be a senior, but he sure is feisty.”
What else does the Verona Street Animal Society do besides the annual Roc Top Pet contest? Plenty. If you’re looking to adopt a pet, check their website to read available animals’ bios. Many of the pets at Verona are strays, so they may not have information regarding history, but each pet is examined by the clinical and technical teams to ensure the animal is healthy, ready for a home, and to provide as much information as possible.
Verona Street Animal Society also assists with lost and found pets. ey also help license, spay and neuter, provide rehoming support and pet safety assistance, as well as other assistance.
Pet Ale beer. e brewmasters from ree Heads Brewery will make a specialty blend to be featured at their brewery and in local Wegmans stores. Winners will be announced at a special release party in March.
e best prize is bragging rights and recognition from the community of the Top Pet. e rst prize winner will receive a custom-engraved Roc Top Pet plaque/cheese board, a six-pack of the dog’s new beer, a professional photo session, a decorated dog cookie box, a bandana, a canvas bag and pub glass, two general admission tickets to see the Wood Brothers and Shovels & Ropes at the Perinton Center Stage Amphitheater on June 11, Paw Balm, and a $20 gi card.
What a great way to raise funds for Verona Street Animal Society, which supports Rochester Animal Services. Last year, the Society raised over $32K for pets. ey help create safe neighborhoods, support the human-animal bond, and save and enhance human/animal lives.
A Churchville dog nominated for Roc Top Pet is Arnold, a Maltese. He is almost 16 years old. He enjoys hanging out on the porch and watching the world and people go by. Arnold loves watching the Bu alo Bills with his people. In the summertime, he loves being on the water in a boat with his humans. Arnold likes to be included in conversations around the home bar. Oh, and treats. He loves food. He is a little guy with a huge personality. Arnold is a loyal buddy.
JackieLewert,Arnold’sowner, said,“Arnoldhasbeenwithme since I graduated college. He has been with me through so many life events. He spent the rst year living in Churchville with me and my family. He was with me for my rst apartment, meeting my husband, Ian, walking down the aisle in our wedding, and moving back to Churchville when we bought our rst house in 2020. He likes to meander through Churchville Park with us.
Monetary and item donations are always welcome to help maintain and improve the comfort and care of the animals at the shelter. Donations also help provide access to resources for pet owners in under-served neighborhoods. All food and treat donations must be unopened. Drop o any donations at the shelter during business hours.
How else can you help? Volunteer at the shelter. Volunteers are essential to the success of the organization. Giving your time and hearts to the animals makes a big di erence in the organization’s mission. Many activities involve direct contact with the animals. ere are also other volunteer opportunities that provide supportive and administrative functions. Visit their volunteer page to nd the role perfect for you.

Huge Thank You!
To the wonderful person who found my wallet at the plaza on Commerce Drive in Victor on February 18th and turned it in to a store. You have no idea how much you helped a stranger! My wallet contained my license, cash, gift cards and a charge card. Everything was still there. I will never forget your selflessness! You are a miracle to me.
The Stranger whose kindness restored my faith today!
I wanted to get my sincere thank you out to the gentleman who pulled me out of a slushy frozen mess in the parking lot near the ATM in Churchville today. After struggling trying to dig out my old beat up 2WD truck on my own for nearly half an hour to no avail... I wish I had taken the time to ask the gentleman’s name and shake his hand. Your kindness was truly unexpected and words cannot express how much you helped me not only get out of my predicament, but how much you improved my frustration and the somewhat angry and rude mood I had started my day with. Thank you so much for the assistance and for your kind words and demeanor. It meant more than you know.
Thank you
Many thanks to the kind and honest person who found my purse at Wegman’s and returned it to the customer service desk. Your action was much appreciated!
How clean is your street?
A big thumbs down to my neighbor who thinks it's his job to clean the street. Cleaning up debris in the street is good; dumping it in your neighbor’s yard, not so good. Now this is not trash. It is ice and snow buildup along the curb. It's not in anyone's way and it will melt. Now it's piled in my front yard along with all the dirt and stones that the plow has scraped up. It looks terrible and was totally unnecessary! Do you think when it melts he will come over and clean that up? No. So you're retired and bored, me too! The next time you feel the need to clean the street, please use your own yard as the dumping ground.
Stop turning small towns into the inner city I moved out here a little over 10 years ago. I am so disappointed in how so many stores and restaurants are being built in the same parking lots. Like one in front of the other, looking like the big inner cities. Too many apartments now going up on every corner too. The bright lights in the store windows are awful and make it look like downtown pawn shops all along the main drag. Enough is enough, crime goes up and areas start to look like trash with all these businesses on top of each other. The rush hour is bad enough. The more you keep putting up here, the more traffic. Please leave some dignity to this town.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Scan local advertisements: Church bulletins, newspaper classified ads and online bullet boards typically boast a number of items for sale, many of which are being sold at a fraction of the cost of new items. Before embarking on shopping trips, check these advertisements to see if there are any preowned items that meet your needs.
In addition, there are a number of social media groups that enable members to advertise their items for sale. Others are encouraged to inquire about the sales and make their own offers. Though it might take some effort, it is possible to get brand-name used merchandise for less.

This date marks the day the UN signed the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
FACTS
Why is World Wildlife Day important? We all share one planet. Ensuring Earth remains a thriving, living, breathing planet means taking care of everything in it. Overfishing can result in disastrous economic problems for coastal communities dependent on the trade. The loss of a species can lead to changes in the local environment, which can directly a ect the humans living there. Wildlife conservation is an integral part of creating a sustainable world.
Who am I?
I am the smallest of my living species. I have the narrowest black stripes of any of my subspecies and I am also the darkest in orange compared to other subspecies. I weigh 260 lbs on average and grow up to 8ft long.
I have a paler coat than most subspecies of my kind, and large, dark, widely spaced rosettes with thick, unbroken rings. They weigh 70-105 pounds. I have a thick coat that can grow as long as 7 centimeters in winter.
I am one of the world’s largest living primates. I have muscular arms, a massive chest, and broad hands and feet — and longer hair and shorter arms than my lowland cousins. My thick black hair helps insulate from cold weather.
I reach a shoulder height of between 6.6 and 10.5 ft, weigh between 4,400 and 8,800 lbs, and have 20 pairs of ribs. I typically have smaller tusks. My skin color is lighter than that of maximus and indicus with the least depigmentation.
You may think my skin is black, but it is dark gray or dark brown. I am 10.812.0 ft long and 1,760-3,080 lbs. I have a large head, short neck and short, thick legs. I also have a prehensile, pointed upper lip.
My habitat consists of the lowland rainforests and tropical, swamp, and mountain forests on the island of Borne. I have a round face with a dark red coat. I have strong hands and hand-like feet, along with flexible hips and long arms that allow me to live primarily in treetops.

Clicker Training Can Help Your Dog Love to Learn
NEW WAY TO SAVE ALL SHELTER PETS
(NAPSI)—The lives of nearly 733,000 cats and dogs could be saved with the help of caring humans and an innovative Web-based platform introduced this week by Best Friends Animal Society.
Envisioned as a tool to help animal lovers help their communities save more pets, the new community lifesaving dashboard combines groundbreaking data visualization technology with the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published.
Two years in the making, the tool crowdsources, validates and translates complex data about the dogs and cats in U.S. shelters.
It brings an unprecedented level of transparency to the animal welfare movement, unlocking new opportunities for saving pets by providing a detailed picture showing precisely—on a city, state and community level—where cats and dogs need to be saved.
For the first time, anyone with a smartphone or computer will be able to easily access his or her community’s snapshot of how many cats and dogs need to be saved and find tools to help individual shelters save more pets. The organization used independent research, government data and even FOIA requests to create the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published.
Best Friends CEO Julie Castle says the investment in data was necessary to achievetheorganization’sgoalof bringing the whole country no-kill by 2025.
“Up until two years ago, we didn’t even know how many shelters existed,” she said.“How can you possibly save all the animals if you don’t even know how many need to be saved?
“With this data in hand, our goal to save every savable pet by 2025 is finally within reach,” Castle said. To explore the community lifesaving dashboard, visit BestFriends.org/2025.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the value of training dogs using a clicker? I have tried using a clicker to train my dog Atlas, but he didn’t listen very well. When should I click at him -- when he’s misbehaving? Or when he’s doing something right? And how can he tell? -- John H., Spring eld, Massachusetts
DEAR JOHN: Clicker training, or “mark and reward” training, can seem almost magical in terms of how quickly and enthusiastically a dog learns. But that magic only happens when it’s being done correctly.
Basically, you press the clicker device when your dog does precisely the thing that you are trying to train him to do. And you follow up immediately (like, within a second) with a reward -- usually a little bit of a treat. So, here’s how it is done:
-- Decide on one behavior that you want your dog to learn in your training session. Start with a basic behavior, like “sit,” “come here,” “lie down” or “give paw.”
-- Give Atlas the command. If he doesn’t follow the command, don’t click.
-- As soon as he follows the command, click once and give him a little treat.
-- Repeat the process again and again until he follows the command immediately.
By associating the clicker noise with a command and a reward, Atlas will quickly build a positive association with the command. is works for many types of training, from basic obedience to agility to job-speci c commands. But you start with just one command at a time.
Also, consider working with a trainer, either one on one or in a group training setting. You’ll pick up many training skills quickly. It’s worth the investment.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Our life is March weather, savage and serene in one hour. We go forth austere, dedicated, believing in the iron links of Destiny, and will not turn on our heel to save our life: but a book, or a bust, or only the sound of a name, shoots a spark through the nerves, and we suddenly believe in will...

President Joe Biden’s initiative, aimed at providing targeted debt relief to millions of student-loan borrowers, is now before the Supreme Court. Opponents to the program say it amounts to an unlawful attempt to erase an estimated $430 billion of federal student loan debt under the guise of the pandemic. What side do you fall on regarding student loan forgiveness?
• The effects of the pandemic are still being felt by many Americans and I agree that loan forgiveness needs to happen.
• Students borrowed this money expecting to pay it back and should.
• Loan forgiveness is a noble idea but shouldn’t we fix the system first?

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Statins and Thiazides
Acutely Increase Blood Sugar, Risk of Diabetes
DEAR DR. ROACH: My question regards the results of my fasting glucose tests for the past couple of years. I am 81 and weigh around 150 pounds. The medications I am taking concern me, with relevance to the A1C levels of my quarterly blood work. My A1C levels have mostly been near mid-5%; the last showed 6%. Medications relevant to this that I am suspicious of are 100-12.5 mg of losartan/hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and 20 mg of simvastatin. I have read that these medications can have an effect of raising blood glucose. My doctor is adamant that this does not exist, but it seems to me that there is a conflict on this. Should I perhaps ask him to change those medications because of my blood sugar? I am concerned about issues with the thiazide and the statin. -- P.R.
ANSWER: There isn’t a conflict. You are absolutely right that both simvastatin (like all statins) and HCTZ (like all thiazides) increase blood sugar and the risk of diabetes. The risk, however, is small. For thiazides, the risk of high blood sugar seems tied to potassium levels -- the lower the potassium, the higher the risk of diabetes. Interestingly, the losartan in combination with the HCTZ you are taking tend to raise potassium levels, so that combination may have a lower risk of worsening blood sugar levels than taking HCTZ alone. You are already taking the smallest effective dose of thiazide. The risk of statins seems greater in higher doses and with more potent statins, like atorvastatin and rosuvastatin; however, the risk is still small. About one person in 100 treated with a high-dose intensive statin, such as 40 mg of atorvastatin for five years, would be expected to get diabetes, while a dosage of 20 mg of simvastatin would be expected to have an even lower risk.
The conflict isn’t whether the increased risk exists (it does), but whether the treatments to prevent heart attack and stroke are worth the increased risk. For nearly all people, the benefit of keeping blood pressure and cholesterol under control greatly outweighs the small increased risk of diabetes. Given your normal A1C level, I would say your risk is low, and I do not generally recommend changing treatment based on your concern over blood sugar.

UNDERSTANDING CATARACTS
Cataract diagnosis and treatment: An eye doctor will examine dilated eyes to diagnose cataracts. A slit-lamp microscope can make it easier to spot abnormalities, states the AOA.
The eye professional will consider age and the severity of cataracts to determine a treatment strategy. Early loss of vision due to cataracts may be mitigated by stronger lighting or a change in eyeglasses or contact lens prescription.
Johns Hopkins says cataract surgery is one of the most common eye surgeries. It is safe and effective. An ophthalmologist will remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial, clear lens.If cataracts are present in both eyes, each surgery will be performed separately.A possible complication of cataract surgery is when a part of the natural lens that is not taken out during surgery becomes cloudy and blurs eyesight. This can be remedied with a laser treatment.
DENTAL PROBLEMS AND CLEFT LIP OR PALATE
Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects affecting approximately one in every 1,600 babies. Cleft lip occurs when the tissues between the mouth and nose don’t come together properly in utero, leaving a gap or cleft. Cleft palate happens when this improper tissue growth occurs on the roof of the mouth or palate. The two conditions can occur together or on their own. In either case, the conditions cause several problems for developing babies, including issues with teeth, breathing, feeding, and talking. UNIQUE WAYS TO REDUCE CANCER RISK EVERY DAY
Drink more fluids. Drinkingmorefluidsisoneof theeasierthingspeoplecandoevery day to reduce their cancer risk. The American Cancer Society recommends individuals consume eight cups of water per day, but millions likely fall far short of that amount. That’s unfortunate, as research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research in 2011 found that high fluid intake was associated with a 24 percent reduced bladder cancer risk among men. In addition, a separate study funded by the Strauss Institute and published in 2020 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that women with breast cancer consumed less water and total fluids than women who did not have breast cancer. The researchers concluded more investigation into the link between drinking more water and reducing breast cancer risk is necessary, but noted that drinking water is harmless, convenient and beneficial to many aspects of health.

INSULATED SIDING CAN KEEP YOUR HEAT WHERE IT BELONGS -- INSIDE!
If you were hit by the “polar vortex” that brought subzero temperatures to more than half of the continental U.S., it was a good reminder that the best way to stay warmwastodressinlayers.
The same is true for houses. Today’s homeowners looking for ways to improve their home’s energy performance are increasingly choosing insulated siding -- vinyl siding with rigid foaminsulationthatislaminatedor permanentlyattached to the panel. Think of it as adding an extra layer towardoffthecold.
Most exterior walls have insulation in between the wall studs but allow significant energy loss through the studs themselves, which are poor insulators. This is called “thermal bridging.” Insulated siding improves energy efficiency by reducing thermal bridging. Like a blanket,it is continuous insulation over the studs, which helps homes stay warm in winter and cool in summer.
Designed to reach higher levels of rigidity, stability and thermal resistance -- “R-value” -insulated siding is subject to an arrayofregulations, standardsand third-party quality assurance tests that determine how it is manufactured and marketed. Due to that rigor, a number of building and energy-efficiency programs have recognized that insulated siding qualifiesashome insulation. In addition,it has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a building product that can help qualify homes under the Energy Star QualifiedHomesProgram.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE
Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped.

There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you.... In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself.

WITH HELP FROM CHILE, BLUEBERRIES STAY FRESH ALL WINTER
They’re delicious, nutritious and versatile. They’re naturally fatfree, high in vitamin Cand a rich source of antioxidants.Americans love them in cereals, salads, saucesandastoppingsandbythe handful, but when winter comes around, manypeopleassumefresh blueberryseasonisover.
Notsofast.Whenthesnow fliesin Minneapolis, things are just heating up in places like Chile. Thanks to a robust South American fruit industry, fresh blueberries now maintain their favoredpositioninNorthAmerican produceaisles, culinarycreations, andhomekitchensallyearlong.
Andsobydegreesthewinterwore away... and the chill, bitter, windy, early spring came round. The comic almanacks give us dreadful pictures of January and February; but, in truth, the months which should be made to look gloomy in England are March and April. Let no man boast himself that he has got through the perils of winter till at least the seventh of May.
~Anthony Trollope (1815–1882), The Chronicles of Barsetshire, Vol. III: Doctor Thorne, “Chapter XLVII: How the Bride Was Received, and Who Were Asked to the Wedding,” 1858
The popularity of blueberries has soared in recent years, driven by their impressive nutritional resume. One half-cup of blueberries contains just 42 calories and helps meet the recommended 5 to 9 servings a day of colorful fruits and vegetables. The “Little Blue Dynamos” pack in fiber, potassium, Vitamin C and more cancer-fighting antioxidants than either wine or green tea. Recent studies also show that fresh blueberries can help keep skin looking younger; help prevent dementia,Alzheimer’sdiseaseand heart disease; and serve as a naturalanti-inflammatory.
Helping the cause significantly is that most people consider fresh blueberries a treat, including children who remain blissfully unaware of the health benefits. Fresh blueberries are easily enjoyed as a grab-and-go snack, but there are other sweet and savory ways to beat the winter blueswiththissuperfood.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* If you have a plastic-bristle broom that is starting to get really ragged and it’s time to replace it, don’t get rid of it.Turn it into a scrub broom.Trim the bristles down to about an inch. You can even cut them at an angle. Then you can use this broom to scrub stubborn spots. The bristles are nice and tight when they are so short.
* Check your windshield wiper blades. Are they smeary? Before you replace them, use a paper towel and rubbing alcohol to clean the blades. They might have life left in them yet!
* Still fire season in your neck of the woods? Most of us know not to burn magazine inserts or anything plastic, but did you know that you CAN add some spice to your fire? Save the peel from your citrus fruits (oranges, tangerines, grapefruit -- even lemons and limes) to add to your fire. They burn well, and they smell great!
* “We had a piece of linoleum left over when we replaced the kitchen flooring. It was almost a perfect size to put over our picnic table. We use it for crafts and whenever we don’t want anything to fall through the boards. It stores neatly against the wall behind our outdoor shelves when we aren’t using it!” -- R. in Minnesota
* If you have a light bulb that has broken off in the socket and you need to get it out to replace it, use needlenose pliers to grab the metal ring and unscrew it. Be sure to turn the light off first! If that doesn’t work, you might be able to use a bar of soap to grab any glass shards sticking out, and unscrew it that way.
* “When I put on my stockings, I put on my dish gloves first. It sounds silly, but I do not have any snags in my stockings, and the grip of the gloves makes them easy to pull up and adjust for a perfect fit.” -- W.M. in New York

A thorough wash can remove harmful compounds that may cause damage when mixed with sand and road salt. Experts also recommend a coat of wax for an extra layer of protection from the elements. Besides protecting your car, you’ll also be protecting the environment. Professional car washes can save up to 20 percent of the amount of water you’d use by washing your car at home. They do this by treating and reusing their water, rather than releasing toxic chemicals and grime into the storm drains, which can often occur when you wash your car yourself.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles Shrink
ation: Beating em at eir Own Game
“Shrink ation.” at’s a word that’s been in the news lately, and one that we need to pay attention to.
We know prices are increasing on our groceries. We see it every time we look at the price tags on the shelves when we shop, and certainly at the checkout. But shrink ation is a di erent thing and can be harder to spot. Shrink ation is sneaky price increases.
In shrink ation, the prices don’t go up, but what we get comes down. is is impacting most things across grocery stores, including dairy, shampoo, meats, frozen foods, toilet paper, pet food, pastries, candy bars, laundry detergent, sliced cheese, tea bags ... well, everything.
Example: e price of a can of beans stays the same, but we get fewer ounces. Example: e price of a loaf of bread stays the same, but it’s smaller. Same with cereal, which you’ll have noticed when the box sizes changed.
In my case, one particular item (frozen meatballs) at my local store dropped from 64 meatballs to 56 ... fewer for the same money.
Keep an eye on the unit pricing on the tag on the grocery store shelf. Yes, it’s in tiny print (which is one reason to carry a small magnifying glass at all times), but the numbers will tell you the unit price per uid ounce, pound or count. Over time you’ll be able to see if you’re getting less for your money.
Look at generics to save money (and, in many cases, get a better product) or just change brands. Buy more than one if the price is good, but watch the expiration dates.
Lastly, consider signing up for a store’s loyalty card if you get cash bene ts for doing so, and sign up for the emailed weekly sales yer to shop from.
By shopping carefully, we can beat them at their own game.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, which is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during which the heart can beat too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm.Atrial fibrillation, or AF,occurswhen rapid, disorganized electrical signalscause the atria, which consists of the heart’s two upper chambers,to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, when a person is suffering from AF,blood begins to pool in his or her atria. While that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s two lower chambers, and this prevents the lower and upper chambers from working together effectively.Though AF does not always produce noticeable symptoms, some people with AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially when the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodicallyor becomeanongoingproblemthatlastsfor years.
HOW AGING ADULTS CAN MAINTAIN THEIR
ACUITY
Aging is associated with or linked to a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that won’t impact adults’ daily lives much at all.
While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of age-related cognitive decline. Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks. But age-related cognitive decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age.

HOLIDAY BAKING POINTERS
Pans should be on the center rack of the oven. If the oven isn’t wide enough to put multiple pans side by side, place them on different racks and slightly offset them to enable air circulation.
Use parchment paper. This unsung hero of baking can keep cookies from spreading out on baking sheets, prevent cakes from sticking to pans and may even help batter and dough bake evenly.
Cool cakes upside down on a cooling rack. This will help flatten out the tops, which makes it easier to stack and level cakes for layered cakes.

MENTAL
Members of the younger generations suffer from an imagined necessity for doing what others are doing, solely because “everyone is doing it.” Probably most of the questionable habits of today’s teenagers can be traced to “peer pressure.” Each youngster feels he or she must go along with all group activities or be branded as a non-conforming “oddball” or “loner.”
As we grow older, we realize that what others do is the worst guide for our own behavior. We learn the delight, and the relief, of simply “not going” to any place or practice that we dislike or disagree with.
The pre-planning of one’s own funeral arrangements relieves your loved ones of the burden of making painful decisions under stress. Ask our friendly staff about the details.

* A common issue with blood donation -- along with other types of charitable contributions -- is that if donors don’t know the recipient, it’s harder to convince them that donating is beneficial. Therefore, in an effort to encourage more young people to give blood, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, sends a text when their donation has been dispensed to someone in need, providing proof that it’s going to good use.
