HOMETOWN 1.

“The secret of happiness is curiosity…” ~ Norman Douglas

Boredom is certainly one of the worst of afflictions. Try to imagine how the dreary hours must drag when one is totally bored! Happily, there is no reason why anyone should ever be bored. In this wonderful world there are so many wonders we can explore… so many more delightful things to know about than we can possibly investigate. It starts with childhood. The curious child is happy as he inquires and learns. There is no reason why we should ever lose this childlike thirst for knowledge, especially since curiosity leads to happiness. We are pleased that most of the families that come to us do so because of the recommendation of friends whom we have been privileged to serve. Ask your friends about us.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.

A Perfect Place To Call Home Relax. Enjoy. No worries. • For seniors 62 years and older and disabled regardless of age • Handicapped accessible roll in showers, or step-in showers • On-site Laundry, Off Street Parking • Pet Friendly • Extra Storage Areas • Community Room for Parties, Card Games, Dinners • Intercom System

5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DRIVING VACATION: Be firm with departure times. Make a plan to leave at a particular hour and stick to it. This will help to keep the trip on schedule.

4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant.

To the person who darted in front of me and then parked: I don’t know if you realize it, but you almost hit me darting in front of me. My husband saw it, and he was behind me. I laid on the horn at you. It was a foolish thing to do that could’ve caused damage and maybe harm to both of us. Next time I will report it the university police. Numerous people had a hand in making this project happen, and they deserve being complimented by name: Preston Pierce, Judi Cermak, Ed Varno, Ethan Fogg, Doug Finch, John Goodwin, former Mayor Ellen Polimeni, Fred and Nancy Goodnow, Assemblyman Brian Kolb, Valerie Knoblauch and Sheriff Kevin Henderson. over a bit, I would question your driving abilities. If you stubbornly stayed in the lane and caused a crash, you can tell it to the Judge. Why? Because you had the right of way, you were justified? Police go around vehicles, also. Do you complain about them too? With so many cars on the roads you must be more flexible and understanding. Uber may be a better alternative for you.

Yeah, we know you have the right of way. My question is, would you purposely cause an accident because you have that right of away? If someone’s going around a delivery truck or mail truck and crosses the center line by a foot or two, why can’t you just move over? Nobody’s trying to force you into a ditch. If you can’t move

This has been going on all year for several years at one farm in particular. The roadway is constantly covered. Why should I have to drive extra miles to avoid this area and the stench as it splashes all over my car? I don’t see this anywhere else. I know the Sheriff has been there multiple times, so why is still happening, causing danger and damage to vehicles?

Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’ Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Furniture or “yard sale finds”: These can be stabilized and given a new look through stain/paint or distressing, but some may also lend themselves to transformation for other uses, such as turning a chest of drawers into bookshelves, a chair into a swing, a dresser into a seat, and more.

GRILLED CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATOES (NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill. Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes Serves 3 or 4 1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges 1 ½ Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling Heat a grill or grill pan to mediumhigh. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, oil and salt. Arrange sweet potatoes on the grill or grill pan and cook until lightly charred and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through. Sprinkle with more salt and serve. For more recipes, nutritional information and tips for cooking with California sweetpotatoes, go to www.casweetpotatoes.com.

Batavia’s Paul & Bridget Ohlson Celebrate 20 Years of Care-a-Van By Amanda Dudek

W

hile many people have deeply held religious beliefs, some of them may feel uncomfortable entering a church. For Paul Ohlson, this was an opportunity to serve. Care-a-Van, located in Batavia, brings support and spiritual encouragement out of buildings and onto the streets. In 2000, Paul Ohlson and his wife, Bridget, launched Care-a-Van with a motor home and some food. “We decided we were going to help people out with groceries,” said Ohlson. “We started parking up on State Street on Saturdays.” “In 2000, no one knew who we were,” Ohlson recalled. “A lot of people came out of curiosity to find out what we were about. Care-a-Van has never missed a Saturday in twenty years,” continued Ohlson. “It doesn’t matter if there are snowstorms or pouring rain. We go out even when the mailman won’t!” Care-a-Van grew quickly after this, adding more vehicles and outreach activities. “In 2003, we incorporated and became our own 501c3,” shared Ohlson. “In 2007, an old transit bus was donated to us, and we began going out and offering morning prayer and coffee.” It was also in 2007 that Ohlson left his career of 27 years to lead Care-a-Van fulltime. “It has been 13 years,” he said. “God has provided for us like we haven’t missed a beat.” This life-changing decision freed Ohlson to dedicate himself to being Committed, Consistent and Faithful to the ministry and community. Now with five vehicles, Care-a-Van reaches out to the Batavia Community in more ways than ever. It currently serves the City of Batavia with Saturday morning groceries and prayer, weekday morning bus coffee and prayer, summertime cookouts every Thursday with short teachings, worship and prayer and cookouts at community events, including Caring for the City Day which offers free dental care from Dr. Russ Marchese. Care-a-Van also cares for Paul Ohlson and his wife, Bridget community members during Ohlson, Care-a-Van founders. the holiday season. “We hold a Halloween night outreach,” explained Ohlson. “For Thanksgiving, we provide holiday food packages for people. We also create Christmas gift bags, each of which contain 28 items, for 350 seniors at eight different senior centers in Batavia. We sing Christmas Carols, tell the Christmas story and in the spring, we make strawberry shortcake for these seniors, as well. For some, ours is the only gift they will receive.” Care-a-Van vehicles also drive around in the afternoon on Christmas Day, offering Tim Hortons gift cards and prayer to anyone on the streets. For 19 years, Care-a-Van has offered groceries from a different location each Saturday of the month: Blondies Ice Cream the first, Liberty Square the second, the old town firehall across from K-Mart the third, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Washington the fourth and if there is a fifth Saturday, Northside Meadows. “People can always call 585-343-0328 to listen to our message which tells where we will be that week,” shared Ohlson. However, for Paul Ohlson, Care-a-Van is about a lot more than food. “We have been developing relationships for 20 years,” he said passionately. “Everyone gets prayed for. God cares, and so do we.” The community is responding. “People thank us; they know who we are,” said Ohlson. “Our vehicles are our buildings, and people are familiar with them. People

are always waiting when we pull up. Some of them aren’t even looking for food. They just want to talk and get prayer. Some ask us to officiate funerals for their loved ones, too. After 20 years, people start to listen to what you are saying.” About 80% of the support for Care-a-Van comes from individuals who have seen the consistency and unconditional nature of the work they do for Batavia’s communities, the other 20% comes from churches and businesses. “We are bringing the Gospel to the streets,” said Ohlson. “We are a 100% street ministry. We are where the people are.” Ohlson also thanks dedicated volunteers. “We have really good volunteers who are so appreciated,” he praised. “They put just as much into this ministry as I do.” Ohlson also shared that volunteers and those looking to complete community service are welcome to work with them, as well. Care-a-Van continues into 2020, thanks to the generosity of those who see its impact. “Our original bus wound up in the scrapyard this past August,” shared Ohlson. “An older S&S limo was anonymously purchased for us. God has always provided.” Still, there is one Care-a-Van vehicle which Ohlson would like to see put to use much more often: the mobile church. “I would love for churches to start using it to take the Gospel to the streets,” Ohlson enthused. “A church preached off the back of it once, and that was cool. I hope more churches utilize it, too.” “According to Mark 16:15, Jesus commanded us to go into all the world and preach the good news,” said Ohlson. “We hope to be found faithful in doing so.” For more information, call 585-343-0328. Give Back And Feel Rewarded

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2016. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

‘Cotton Ball’ Sensation Is a Sign of Neuropathy

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

QUICK REPAIR Anyone with a tooth that has chipped, cracked, broken, or become stained can take advantage of dental bonding. One of the quickest, easiest, and least expensive of dental procedures, “bonding” makes use of tooth-colored resin to fill gaps, mask discoloration, repair fractures, and make other cosmetic improvements in a single office visit. After the teeth have been etched with a mild acid that maximizes the bond between tooth and resin, the putty-like, tooth-colored resin is applied to the tooth and molded to the desired shape. Then, the resin is “cured” with a special light that hardens the resin in place. Finally, the resin is trimmed and polished. The entire procedure takes 30-60 minutes per tooth.

Improving the look, health, and function of your smile is our primary focus at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. From cosmetic dentistry to general family dentistry and preventive care, we are dedicated to working with our patients toward the goal of achieving the healthiest, most attractive smiles possible. Are you curious how today’s cosmetic dentistry procedures can virtually change your life? Here at 6 Batavia City Centre, weíd be glad to tell you about the many ways we can help make your smile a dazzling one. Just call us at 585.343.4246. P..S. Tooth-colored composite resin material can be used in place of traditional amalgam (silvercolored) filling.

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier

(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath. DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 63-year-old male diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. I am 5 feet, 11 inches and weigh 240 pounds. I have two stents and take Sprycel for the CML. My levels are good, and the coronary disease is under control. For a few years I’ve had what feels like “cotton balls” under the skin in the area of the balls of my feet. Now it feels like it’s migrating to the arch. While not too uncomfortable, it is almost impossible to walk barefooted. Some type of foot covering is needed to keep from noticing the feeling. My doctor says it’s the diabetes, and to lose weight or see a podiatrist. Other than losing the weight, do you have any opinion about this? -- N.M. ANSWER: Cotton-ball sensation is one way that many people describe the beginning of neuropathy, a general term for a variety of different conditions that affect the nerves of the body. In a person with cancer (like CML, chronic myelogenous leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow) and a new symptom, it is always wise to consider whether it could be due to the cancer, the treatment for the cancer or from something else. In your case, usually CML is not associated with neuropathy. However, the medicine you are taking, dasatinib (Sprycel), has been associated with a severe kind of reversible neuropathy. I read the case reports of this condition carefully, and I doubt that is what is going on with you, as the symptoms you have are different from those reported. People with longstanding diabetes frequently develop a particular disease of the nerves, diabetic neuropathy. This almost always begins with sensation changes in the feet. I agree with your doctor that diabetes is the most likely cause. Seeing a podiatrist is absolutely a good idea. He or she can test you for this condition (usually a careful physical exam will make the diagnosis), in addition to looking carefully for any early signs or risk factors for injury or infection. You also should learn how to do a daily inspection of your feet and recognize the signs, so you can get to medical attention promptly should any damage to your feet occur. The podiatrist will make sure you have appropriate footwear. Many people with diabetes benefit from weight loss, but the important thing is to be sure your diabetes is under good control. This is achieved through good diet, regular exercise and medication, if needed, in addition to weight loss in people who are overweight. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to cancer, my prostate was removed about seven years ago. My PSA reading has increased since 2012 from 0.09 to 0.304. Should I be concerned? I am 78 years old and in relatively good health. -- B.D. ANSWER: PSA readings can go up and down, but a threefold increase could mean that the cancer is coming back, and you should see the specialist taking care of your prostate cancer to discuss getting additional testing. Not having disease for seven years after treatment is a good sign, but the PSA test is pretty specific for cancer recurrence if two separate readings are above 0.2. You may need additional therapy, but only further investigation will show how concerned you need to be. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task. Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money. How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment. You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. Learn More: For further facts and tips on insulation, go to www.rockwool.com/products/comfortbatt.

Check for leaks and plug any you find. Homes may develop air leaks over time, and such leaks allow air to infiltrate the home. W hen that occurs, homeow ners instinctively turn up the thermostat in w inter to combat the cold air getting in. Come summertime, those same homeow ners w ill run their air conditioners on a higher setting in an effort to stay comfortable w hen hot air is creeping through the cracks. Rather than adjusting the temperature inside, fix any sources of air infiltration you find. Run your hand along doorw ays and w indow s to determine if any drafts are coming through. Older homes may also develop cracks in bricks, around the foundation and in siding or stucco. Seal any areas w here you feel air infiltrating your home, w hich w ill save money, reduce your energy consumption and make your older home more efficient.

Manage Your Blood Pressure And Protect Your Kidneys (NAPSI) - Did you know if

you have high blood pressure you are at increased risk for chronic kidney disease? High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is the second leading cause of chronic kidney disease in the United States. About 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure may have chronic kidney disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels. If your blood pressure gets too high, the blood vessels in your body‚ including those in your kidneys‚ may become damaged. This damage makes it harder for the kidneys to filter blood and remove wastes and extra water from the body. Kidney disease can get worse over time, and if not treated it can lead to kidney failure. And while high blood pressure can lead to kidney disease, the reverse is also true: kidney disease can lead to high blood pressure. Simple tests can tell you whether you have high blood pressure or kidney disease. Ask your health care professional if you have been tested for high blood pressure and kidney disease. Many people with kidney disease don’t know they have the disease until their kidneys begin to fail. Research suggests that fewer than 1 in 10 people who have kidney disease are aware they have the disease. This is because kidney disease often doesn’t have any symptoms early on. The good news is that you can help protect your kidneys by managing high blood pressure with healthy lifestyle habits.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 5, 1977, the Dial-a-President radio program, featuring President Jimmy Carter, airs for the first time. Carter answered calls from all over the country from his desk in the Oval Office. Approximately 9 million calls flooded the CBS radio studio during the two-hour broadcast. On March 6, 1899, the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin registers Aspirin, the brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, on behalf of the German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co. In its primitive form, the active ingredient, salicin, was used for centuries in folk medicine. On March 7, 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell receives a patent for his revolutionary new invention -- the telephone. Bell’s patent filing beat a similar claim by Elisha Gray by only two hours.

“Our research continues to uncover the complexities of the link between high blood pressure and kidney disease,” says Griffin P. Rodgers, MD, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “And what we are finding supports the message that you can help protect your kidneys by managing high blood pressure with healthy lifestyle habits.” Adopting healthy lifestyle habits that help you manage your blood pressure will also help to keep your kidneys healthy. You can prevent or slow kidney disease progression by taking the following steps to lower your blood pressure: Take medicines as prescribed. Blood pressure medicines often play a key role in lowering blood pressure. Aim for a healthy weight. If you are overweight or have obesity, reducing your weight may lower high blood pressure. Select healthier food and beverage options. Follow a healthy eating plan that focuses on heart-healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats that are low in sodium. Stop smoking. Smoking damages blood vessels, increases your risk for high blood pressure, and worsens problems related to high blood pressure. For help quitting, call 1-800-QUITNOW or go to Smokefree.gov. Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can have an adverse effect on your blood pressure and metabolism. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Manage stress and make physical activity part of your routine. Healthy stress-reducing activities and regular physical activity can lower blood pressure. Try to get at least 30 minutes or more of physical activity each day. “You can manage your blood pressure and its complications through healthy lifestyle habits, which include exercise, following a healthy eating plan and taking blood pressure medication as prescribed by your doctor,” says Gary H. Gibbons, MD, director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). “It’s important to know your numbers because controlling or lowering your blood pressure can prevent or delay serious complications like kidney disease and heart disease.” For more information, visit the NIDDK website at www.niddk.nih.gov. HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Maintain your beard. The beard boom continues, but men who want to look sharp and well-groomed should make an effort to trim any wild facial hair they may have. Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Change is still dominant for Rams and Ewes, both in the workplace and their private lives. This is also a good time to look at a possible relocation if that has been one of your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Doing things for others is what you do well. But don’t forget that Bovines thrive on the arts, so make some time for yourself to indulge your passion for music and artistic expressions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While the Romantic Twin considers where to go for his or her upcoming vacation, the Practical Twin will start making travel plans now to take advantage of some great bargains. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your sensitive nature helps you deal with a difficult emotional situation. Be patient and continue to show your sincere support wherever (and for whomever) it is needed. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re making progress as you move through some unfamiliar territory. And while there might be a misstep or two along the way, overall you’re heading in the right direction. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some good news arrives -- and just in time to remind you that you’re making progress. Perhaps things aren’t moving as quickly as you’d prefer, but they’re moving nevertheless. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a good week to step back and assess the facts that have recently emerged to see where they can be used to your advantage. Also, don’t hesitate to make changes where necessary. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You should begin to experience some support from those who now agree with your point of view. This should help counter the remaining objections from die-hard skeptics. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t let your aim be deflected by trivial matters as you try to resolve a confusing situation. Take time to find and thoroughly assess the facts before making any decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The possibility of moving to another location has come up. But before you dismiss it as unworkable, it’s worth checking out just in case it does have some merit after all. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) New relationships -- personal or work-related -show mixed signals. Best to assume nothing. Let things play themselves out until you have something substantive to work with. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your ability to make needed changes without causing too much, if any, negative ripple effect comes in handy when dealing with a sensitive matter either on the job or in the family. BORN THIS WEEK: Although you like things to go smoothly, you’re not shy about making waves when you believe the situation calls for it. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

Hi, my name is

Zoie! I love

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years.

cuddling, playing with my siblings, Toby (cat), & Marley (dog), in paper bags, my kitty tunnel, & investigating the highest places I can get to. I love following Mommy everywhere she goes! I love to get in Mom’s plants & destroy them (they’re not poisonous), get in the shower & attack people through the curtain while they are going to the bathroom, and sleeping with Mom & Dad. I’m Mom & dad’s 6th rescue pet!! I was adopted from Joyful Rescues in May 2017.

Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. For more information on NaturVet products, please visit www.NaturVet.com or call (888) 628-8783.

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

Even though a type of word puzzle was found inscribed on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb, the first known crossword puzzles are credited to journalist Arthur Wynne, who designed his “word-cross” in 1913. Wynne’s puzzle appeared in a Sunday newspaper called New York World. Since its inception, the crossword puzzle has become one of the world’s most recognizable puzzles, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world, and now appearing in virtually all newspapers. Crossword puzzles are word games in which the answers correspond to numbered clues. The words are put into a grid of horizontal and vertical squares to form completed, intersecting words. When all of the words are supplied correctly, the puzzle is complete. In North America and Great Britain, crossword grids traditionally have 180-degree rotational symmetry. The diagram, or placement of black squares within the grid, must be symmetric diagonally. This means that the pattern of the puzzle will appear the same if the puzzle is turned upside down. American crossword puzzles conform to a set of established rules made popular by publisher Simon & Schuster, the original crossword puzzle publisher. The standard puzzle grid size is 15x15. However, 17x17, 19x19 and 21x21 also are used. Smaller 13x13 also are accepted. Many crossword puzzles do not use two-letter words, and three-letter words are kept to a minimum. In addition, every letter square must be part of both an Across and a Down word. Crossword rules are different in other parts of the world. For example, in Japan, the corner squares of a crossword puzzle must be white. Despite once publishing a statement describing crosswords as a “sinful waste in the utterly futile finding of words the letters of which will fit into a prearranged pattern” in 1924, The New York Times routinely produces what many consider to be the world’s most challenging crossword puzzles. Stanley Newman is credited with completing a New York Times crossword faster than anyone in history. In 1996, Newman completed a crossword in two minutes, 14 seconds. Crossword puzzles appear in newspapers, magazines and kids’ activity books and are even used in school lessons to supplement vocabulary lessons. Doing these puzzles also may be good for one’s health. According to a University of California at Berkeley study, crossword puzzles may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that the more often someone engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as crosswords, the less buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are hallmarks of the disease. Doing crossword puzzles also may offer a distraction that helps people reduce stress. Crossword puzzles have a storied history. They are completed recreationally and in competitions, and cruciverbalists look forward to new puzzles in their newspapers every week.
