MOMENTS IN TIME On April 23, 1564, the great English dramatist and poet William Shakespeare is born in Stratford-upon-Avon, the son of a leather trader and the town bailiff. At age 18 he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years his senior. (The History Channel)

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: Communication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Earth Day Tip: When choosing personal care products, apply the same eco standards as you do with food. Check the ingredients list to find safe products. Go for products that are free of dyes and perfumes. When possible, choose products that use the least packaging. * Have a bright flashlight handy in the laundry room. It’s much easier to identify stains with the right lighting. Sending a still-stained garment to the dryer can set the stain, making it much harder or impossible to remove. * Three easy steps to sear your meat: Preheat the skillet, wait 30 seconds before you add oil and pat your meat dry before placing in the skillet. * “I use a paperclip covered by tissue to clean the cracks on my keyboard.” -- I.P. in South Carolina * If you leave a load of laundry too long in the washer, you can re-run it and add a cup of white vinegar to the load to kill the musty smell of potential mildew. * “I make my own little good-behavior coupons for my three children. I print them on different colors of paper for each child. They can cash in coupons for activities or rewards, and if they go in together to get something, I will give them bonus coupons for working together. I think this has made goal-setting a priority for them, and it has helped them learn the lesson of shared goals -- an important one for a large family.” -- R.V.F. in Arizona GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW’S THE TIME TO

TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime.

SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Adhering to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule serves many purposes, including improving the its durability and protecting various components, including its cooling system and drivetrain. While many manufacturers used to recommend changing a vehicle’s oil every 3,000 miles, many of today’s newer automobiles need their oil changed less frequently. Check your owner’s manual for manufacturer recommendations regarding oil changes, and don’t forget to replace the oil filter when changing your vehicle’s oil.

Choosing Carpeting

CARPET/FLOORING

Unparalleled Service Carpet, Vinyl & Much More! “The price was great, the quality was fabulous, and the service was unparalleled.” - Loren Penman

Today, there are m any different types of carpeting available. The follow ing guidelines can m ake carpet shopping a bit easier. Type of carpeting There are m any different types of carpeting, som e of w hich are best suited to certain situations. For exam ple, plush and saxony carpets are better in low -traffic areas. These carpets m ay show footprints and also vacuum tracks and dirt, but they’re higher on the com fort spectrum than other types of carpet. Berber, w hich is m ore flat and dense, helps m ask stains and tracks. It is durable in high-traffic areas. Textured carpets like frieze are cut from fibers of different heights, so they m ask stains and are also softer on the feet than berber. Padding It isn’t alw ays necessary to purchase the m ost expensive or thickest padding. How ever, it is w ise to pick a pad that m atches the type of carpeting you’re selecting and one that aligns w ith how you plan to use the room . You m ay be able to go w ith a thinner pad in low -traffic room s and beneath dense carpeting like berber. In high-traffic room s, choose a thicker, m ore durable padding. Padding prevents carpet backing and fibers from com ing apart over tim e. It pays to invest in a padding that w ill last as w ell.

HOME SERVICES

Installation Select a reliable carpet retailer and installer for your business. Com petent installers w ill lay the carpeting in the correct m anner so that it w ill look beautiful and m aintain its durability for the life of the product. 4152 West Main Street Batavia

I think the true gardener is a lover of his flowers, not a critic of them. I think the true gardener is the reverent servant of Nature, not her truculent, wife-beating master. I think the true gardener, the older he grows, should more and more develop a humble, grateful and uncertain spirit. ~Reginald Farrer, In a Yorkshire Garden, 1909

When working with chemicals and other products that have strong odors and/or emit particulates into the air, make sure you do so in well-ventilated areas. This will help dissipate the smell and prevent inhalation of concentrated chemical substances. Masks guard against dust, pollen and some other microscopic particles and may not provide enough protection, depending on the job. The Home Depot suggests using particulate or filtration respirators when performing tasks, such as sanding, where you might be exposed to particles. Gas and vapor respirators offer protection against additional substances.

THE BENEFITS OF BACKYARD KOI PONDS Koi ponds can make for beautiful additions to backyards or home gardens. While many people are drawn to koi ponds because of their aesthetic appeal, there are many additional reasons for homeowners to consider installing koi ponds in their backyards. Ponds and water gardens can transform yards rather quickly. Ponds can add appeal to otherwise mundane yards and provide eye-catching, relaxing spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. Koi ponds have recently fallen into a favor with homeowners in North America, but these popular water features date back several centuries to Asia. Centuries ago, Chinese rice farmers began keeping carp in their rice paddies, and that practice eventually caught on in Japan. The fish started to breed and form slight color variations. Koi, often referred to as “Nishikigoi,” are actually descendants of the common carp, though the koi of today are more brightly hued and ornamental fish than carp. Koi can become a lowmaintenance family pet. These fish tend to grow accustomed to having people around, and will often interact with visitors at the surface of the water. It’s not unusual to have koi beg for food or take food from a person’s hand. They also may tolerate some light handling. Koi ponds also provide some psychological benefits. The sound of the water can be soothing and relaxing. Sitting by the pond may help alleviate stress, as unwinding next to a pond and watching the fish swim by can help individuals decompress.

Attention Town of York Residents The Town of York is again sponsoring their annual one day only Spring cleanup for Wednesday, MAY 13, 2020. The pickup will consist of brush, limbs and bagged leaves only, set out at the curb in front of your property on the grass. Please have your pick up ready as early as 7:00 am on that day as the Highway Department WILL NOT make any return trips during that week to areas where brush has already been collected. Please adhere to the following: No branches larger than 6ft, do not pile your brush near any obstacles in yards or under power lines. In addition, we ask that you keep your brush pile on back side of the ditch, not in. As a reminder, LEAVES ONLY are to be placed in biodegradable lawn and leaf bags, which may be purchased at a local hardware for your convenience. No plastic garbage bags will be accepted. For any additional information, please visit www.yorkny.org or call the York Town Hall, 243-3128.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t be put off by a seemingly too-tangled situation. Sometimes a simple procedure will unsnarl all the knots and get you in the clear fast and easy, just the way the Lamb likes it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to go through your work space -- wherever it is -- and see what needs to be replaced and what can be tossed (or at least given away) without a second thought. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Someone who disagrees with your position might try to intimidate you. But continue to present a fair argument, regardless of how petty someone else might be while trying to make a point. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might find yourself exceptionally sensitive to family matters this week. An issue could come to light that you had overlooked. Ask other kinfolk to discuss it with you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might have more questions about a project (or perhaps someone you’re dealing with on some level) than you feel comfortable with. If so, see which can be answered, which cannot, and why. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to clean up and clear out what you don’t need before your tidy self is overwhelmed by “stuff.” Then go celebrate the Virgo victory over clutter with someone special. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might feel a mite confused about why something you were sure couldn’t go wrong didn’t go all right either. Be patient. Things soon move into balance, exactly as you like it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) At this decision point, you could be moving from side to side, just to say you’re in motion. Or you could be considering making a move straight up. What you choose is up to you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although your finances should be in an improved situation at this time, thrift is still the savvy Sagittarian’s smart move. Advice from a spouse or partner could be worth heeding. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking on a new challenge brings out the Goat’s skills in maneuvering over and around difficult spots. Best of all, the Goat does it one careful step after another. (Got the idea, Kid?) AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your well-known patience might be wearing thin because of a disturbing (and seemingly unending) problem with someone close to you. This could be a time to ask for help. Good luck. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful about a new venture that lures you into a “just look and see” mode. Be sure that what you’re being given to see isn’t hiding what you should be seeing instead. BORN THIS WEEK: Aries and Taurus give you the gift of leadership and the blessings of care and concern for all creatures. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

While some mistakes, such as crushing bread or mixing chemicals with food, are inexcusable - I find that most bagging issues stem from the customer rather than the cashier. Okay, so now that dog owners are doing a better job of bagging their pet’s poop when they take them for a walk, the next step is to then take that bag and throw it in the next available receptacle. I can’t believe that people are now leaving their used poop bags along the trails where they walk. What’s the inference here? Do you think someone else will take care of this for you? Come on, dog owners! If you can muster the energy to take your dog on long walks, you can certainly summon the initiative to take your poop bag with you until you can throw it away properly.

Your Backyard Isn’t Cancelled…

6 Tips

To Celebrate Earth Day Right At Home

(NAPSI)—The 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22 can be a good time for everyone to take some time to get outside, even if current conditions mean a community event to celebrate isn’t available. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to honor the Earth in your own backyard. “You don’t need to leave home to celebrate Earth Day. Remember, nature starts at your back door,” explains Kris Kiser, President of the TurfMutt Foundation, an organization that encourages outdoor learning experiences, stewardship of green spaces, and care for living landscapes for the benefit of all. “Get outside, mow your lawn, trim bushes, plant a butterfly bush. By becoming a steward of your yard, you are helping the planet. At the same time, you’re supporting your health and well-being, which is increasingly important as families spend more time at home.”

1

Get outside. Your backyard is an outdoor living room and safe place for pets and kids to play. Science proves spending time in your family’s yard is good for your health and well-being, and so important today as everyone looks for creative ways to stay well while being confined to the home. Researchers have found that people living in neighborhoods with more birds, shrubs and trees are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress.

Research shows people who gardened for at least 30 minutes a week had lower body mass indexes as well as higher levels of self-esteem and better moods overall. They also reported lower levels of tension and stress.

2

Make the outdoors a family project. Take your loved ones outside to assess your space. What’s working well? What could be improved? What can you plan to do together in your backyard? Anything needing to be cleaned up? Make a plan to expand or spruce up your yard.

3

Connect kids to nature. Free, online, do-at-home lesson plans are available from the TurfMutt.com. The environmental education program resources and activities, based on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) principles, give kids the prompts they need to have fun learning about and exploring the nature and science in their own backyards.

4

Know your climate zone. Learn about climate-zone-appropriate plants, the importance of pollinators, and how backyards can support local wildlife. Conduct a plant inventory to determine what’s currently thriving in your backyard. Match that up against the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to determine the best types of turf, trees, shrubs, and plants for the climate zone.

5

Keep pollinators in mind. Your yard is an important part of the connected ecosystem providing much-needed food and shelter for pollinators, such as birds, bees, butterflies, bats, and other creatures. Select a variety of plants that will bloom all year long. The Audubon Society’s database can help determine which birds will be attracted to which plants for unique regions so you can make good choices about what to plant.

6

Plant, prune or mow. Staying confined to home base doesn’t mean gardening and yard work have to stop. Order garden supplies online or have them delivered from a nearby nursery. Mow the lawn and trim bushes.

HOW TO

SUCCEED AT SOCIAL DISTANCING ACCORDING TO YOUR ZODIAC SIGN

Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help “flatten the curve” now! ARIES (MAR 21-APR 19): Now is not the time to discover whether the person you live with is truly “the one” – confinement means you literally have no other options! Instead, why don’t you tune up your relationship with yourself? Enroll for free in the Yale online course The Science of Wellbeing. The grass is always greener where you water it! TAURUS (APR 20-MAY 20): You’re slowly awakening to the fact that your former feelings of independence were just that – feelings. Time to brush up your skill sets – cooking, cleaning, and creative work. Reintegrate productivity into your daily routine with the pomodoro technique and experience the profound happiness of an ordered life. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUN 20): Flamingos don’t breed well in captivity without mirrors to create the impression of a larger group. You’re feeling the same; how can you tell the status of your work reputation if you never leave the house? Get out of your head by taking on new projects that excite you. Take ownership over your own progress – everyone will appreciate it, but most importantly, you won’t care anymore if they do! CANCER (JUN 21-JUL 22): Whether your fears are rational or irrational makes little difference – the real question you want to ask yourself is whether they are actionable. If not, do as the Stoics do and remember it is virtue – not external things – that grounds true happiness.

LEO (JUL 23-AUG 22): Your positive energy is more contagious than ever! What is more, your confinement partners are all on board to help execute your vision. As long as you don’t allow perfectionism to spoil the party, your dreams will become reality sooner than you think. VIRGO (AUG 23-SEP 22): Health is wealth, and your new workout routine is already starting to show dividends. Up the energy while helping your local economy by signing up for streaming classes available through your neighborhood gym or studio! LIBRA (SEP 23-OCT 22): Your creative juices are flowing and they must be released. Is it time to recite original poetry or strum your guitar from the front porch to passers-by? Absolutely! Who doesn’t love being serenaded, especially by someone as charming as you? SCORPIO (OCT 23-NOV 21): Confinement is suiting you just fine this week as you deepen your connection with those whom you might have been taking for granted. Try listening to an audiobook together – Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow will speak to everyone right now. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22-DEC 21): You realize that the internet has increased our access to everything, but at the cost of replacing direct experience and limiting reality. But is there anywhere else to go now? Pascal said, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” It will be harder, but also more rewarding, than you think. CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 19): Everyone’s been talking about COVID-19 as the “black swan.” Take charge of the rhetoric by reading Taleb’s 2007 bestseller The Black Swan, which explores how we build resilience and even robustness in the face of negative events. AQUARIUS (JAN 20-FEB 18): Look at you, just barreling through your reading list! Enhance your experience of the beautiful this week by exploring another segment – might we suggest the free Digital Concert Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic? PISCES (FEB 19-MAR 20): Knowledge and love can never be truly divided. Share the wisdom of this unity with those you love by keeping a journal of your thoughts – be they spiritual insights, cocktail recipes or dating tips – to be passed down to them as the most precious piece of their inheritance.

Play It Safe, Keep Cats Inside

Ali came into Verona Street Animal Shelter March 2018. He was emaciated, had mange and was terrified. I brought him home as a foster but officially adopted him one month later. Sophia was given to us by a friend this February. We weren’t expecting her, and it took a couple weeks for Ali to accept her. Sophia was only 10 lbs. so I was worried he’d accidentally hurt her. He had never met such a small, brave puppy before. Sophia is gaining 2 pounds a week, so she’ll probably be bigger than him! Having two dogs is not only fun, but it’s good for them too. They’re best friends forever now. They spend their time either wrestling, running around, stealing each other’s toys or cuddling.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m staying inside during this emergency, as the state government has requested, but I still let my tomcat “Dodger” out during the day. He would go crazy being stuck inside. However, my daughter told me to stop letting him out, because she says pets can get coronavirus, too. Is Dodger in danger? Could he get it and spread it to me? – Darlene B., Springfield, Massachusetts

DEAR DARLENE: Currently, no pets within the U.S. are known to have contracted the coronavirus. A tiger at the Bronx Zoo reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 (and six more tigers are showing symptoms). But there’s very little data to work with right now. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not have definitive evidence that pets can contract COVID-19, they are playing it safe and urging owners to protect their pets from exposure to the virus. So you should, too. You don’t know where Dodger goes when he’s out, so you don’t know if he is being exposed to this virus or other viruses or bacteria that are much more easily contracted and can cause serious illness. Keep him inside and find ways to keep him from losing his mind. That includes spending more time playing with him, making sure he has plenty of toys, and giving him scratching and climbing spots, plus a hideaway. If his behavior gets worse, contact the veterinarian -- Dodger may need to take medication to calm him down for the short term. Also, because he’s been outside, you need to take precautions for yourself. Wash your hands after petting or picking up Dodger, and after cleaning his litter box. Wash his food and water bowls daily in hot soapy water. Here’s to both of you staying healthy and safe!

DID YOU KNOW? The World Health Organization notes that childhood obesity rates are on the rise across the globe, but things may be improving in the United States. According to the WHO, as of 2014, an estimated 41 million children under the age of five were overweight or obese. But while childhood obesity is on the rise in Asia and Africa, the U.S. has made strides in its efforts to curb childhood obesity. In 2004, 13.9 percent of children in the United States qualified as obese. By 2012, the figure had dropped to 8.4 percent. That’s welcome news in the U.S., as the WHO notes that children who are obese are likely to remain obese as adults, increasing their risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and asthma. There also are economic incentives to reducing childhood obesity, as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation notes that the tab for America’s obesity epidemic is roughly $117 billion per year. Those costs include lost productivity at work and the medical expenses that can be directly linked to obesity.

PLAQUE NEVER SLEEPS The reason it is so important to brush and floss twice daily has everything to do with the nature of the substance that is constantly growing on our teeth. Not to be confused with the fatty substance of the same name that builds up in arteries, “plaque” is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. You may not see it, but you know it is there when your teeth feel “fuzzy” to the tongue if you skip a brushing. Plaque develops when bacteria feed on sugars and carbohydrates in the foods and liquids we eat and drink. As they do, the bacteria in plaque produces acids that attack tooth enamel, causing cavities and compromising gum health. And because plaque never sleeps, you shouldn’t go to sleep either without attending to your nightly ritual of

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Husband Starting Radiation Treatment --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is about to start radiation treatment for stage one cancer on his vocal chord. Does radiation negatively affect the immune system the same way chemotherapy does? Should I be looking out for people who don’t vaccinate? -- H.T. ANSWER: Radiation can affect the immune system when it is given to large areas of the body, since the immune system cells are largely sensitive to radiation. Whole-body radiation is rarely used now, except in people planning for bone-marrow transplant. By contrast, localized radiation does not adversely affect the immune system to anywhere near the degree that chemotherapy can, since the bone marrow, where the immune system cells live, is diffuse throughout the large bones of the body. As far as avoiding unvaccinated individuals, people who are unvaccinated and who are healthy do not pose a risk. It is in an outbreak of vaccine-preventable disease (there have been localized outbreaks of measles and mumps in the past year, and there are seasonal outbreaks of influenza) that unvaccinated people are much more likely to be infectious. So anyone with immune system disease (such as chemotherapy or whole-body radiation) should avoid people with potentially infectious illness. Caregivers of people with severe immune disease certainly should be immunized according to current guidelines. Even elderly people whose caregivers are immunized for flu get flu less than those whose caregivers are not.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I know women who have had double mastectomies in order to reduce the risk of cancer. It seems extreme, but I guess it depends on the evaluation of risk. Are prophylactic hysterectomies done for similar reasons? It used to be routinely done when a woman had passed her reproductive years. I’m interested in your take on this. Will health insurance cover these types of surgeries, and if not, how expensive are they? -- S.B. ANSWER: Prophylactic mastectomies -- that is, surgery to remove the breasts in order to avert a breast cancer diagnosis -- are a reasonable choice for some women at very high risk of breast cancer, especially those with a family history of breast cancer who have an identifiable genetic predisposition, such as one of the BRCA gene mutations. This decision should be made carefully and in consultation with her doctors, usually an oncologist and a genetic counselor. I have very little experience with this in my own patients, fortunately, but I understand that in the case of women with very high genetic risk, it usually is covered by insurance, if it is the consensus of the treating physicians and the patient that she should proceed. Hysterectomy -- the removal of a uterus -- is not done routinely today the way it was decades ago. They are removed for disease, either benign or malignant. However, the removal of both ovaries and Fallopian tubes, called a bilateral oophorectomy and salpingectomy, is performed in some women at high risk for ovarian cancer. In fact, women with the BRCA mutations may consider both a prophylactic double mastectomy and a prophylactic bilateral oophorectomy and salpingectomy, since BRCA mutations increase risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer (as well as other cancers). The cost of surgery in the United States varies dramatically depending on where it is done, but in general it is very expensive. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Summer Dreams Surely our world will be back to normal this summer ... right? Surely we’ll be able to get out of the house without fearing every person who comes near us. We’ll be able to leisurely wander through the grocery store, which will be stocked as it used to be. We’ll stop to talk to friends on the street and sit in coffee shops and chat. We’ll attend church, go to our meetings, stroll through the neighborhood admiring the flowers and take part in our exercise classes. Surely we’ll be able to do those things again, right? Yes. We will. But first we have to get there. To get back to where we used to be, we have to stay healthy now. We need exercise to stay healthy. Even if you can’t go to a class, you can find plenty of them for seniors on YouTube. Look through the offerings and bookmark a few. Rotate through them on a daily basis so you don’t get bored. Go to youtube.com and put “exercises for seniors” in the search box. Some of them are even broken down by age. We need to stay mentally healthy as well, despite the television news. Check the Good News Network online [www.goodnewsnetwork.org] for positive, uplifting stories. You also can put “good news” in your browser search box. It’s been difficult to get grocery store deliveries in a lot of areas because they have little stock. However, if you get delivery of your prescriptions (many pharmacies are providing this service now), call to ask whether they can add a few things to your order. Many drugstores carry soups, crackers, milk, canned fruits and vegetables, bottled water and snacks -- some even carry a limited supply of fresh fruit.

Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. Pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors – including those who may be divorced or widowed – feel more secure and happy. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A recent study found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.” • Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet. • Improved health: Ongoing research has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, and they may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend and purpose.

Have kids pick a theme; whether it’s silly hats or hair, or their craziest mismatched outfit, inspire a spark of creativity and let kids reveal their looks to one another at the start of their call. It’s sure to guarantee some laughs and serve as a talking point and good distraction.

With social distancing in place, gathering a large group together whether at home or in a public setting for a birthday party isn’t necessarily an option. Have no fear though! With the right ingenuity and the aid of video calling software, those much needed social interactions and birthday celebrations are still viable! While bowling or pizza parties may be off-limits for the time being, teleconferencing can allow families to still come together. Grandma can log on to join in with singing happy birthday and watch your little one blow out candles, and cousins & friends can watch them open presents while sending virtual cards. Not only does this maintain social distancing protocols, but allows for engagement and serves as a reminder that birthdays can still be fun occasions despite everything going on. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Virtual parties can come with their own RSVPs emailed out ahead of time, and consider bringing in any of those DIY crafts you may have been trying out on your own! While your kids may not be able to hang out with their friends in person, they can still get together to do some crafts, tell some jokes, or bring some levity into staying at home. Friends and relatives can read birthday cards aloud and express birthday wishes all from the safety of their own homes.

Live-streaming a movie together (with the right extensions) can make up for that birthday trip to the theater that got sidelined—plus you can never go wrong with popcorn!

Adults shouldn’t feel left out—hosting a game night or even a couple of hours of conversation through voice call can ease that sense of isolation, and sometimes there’s nothing better than getting the gang together to reprise their own rendition of Happy Birthday. Birthday parades with convoys are all the rage right now. Set the stage with a birthday yard sign or banner for the boy or girl of the hour. Robert Smythe Fraser April 8, 2020

“I have never for one instant seen clearly within myself. How then would you have me judge the deeds of others…”

Robert Smythe Fraser, 89, died peacefully on April 8, 2020 at Founders Ridge Senior Living, Bloomington, Minnesota.

~ Maurice Maeterlinck

He was born December 25, 1930 in Morristown, New Jersey to William (Bill) Fraser and Virginia Conner Smythe. He married Mary ( Jane) Coyne on September 14, 1957, in Avon, New York. She preceded him in death (2010), as did his parents and brother, William (Bill) Fraser Skivington (2009).

We might assume that Maeterlinck, the Belgian poet and dramatist probably best-known for his “Blue Bird”, which taught us that happiness could be found right at home, would be superbly self-assured. It’s surprising that he confesses that he, like many of us, has difficulty seeing clearly within himself.

Bob is survived by his children, Anne (Bill) Losby, Hudson, WI; Amy ( Joe) Wagner, Bloomington, MN; and Paul (Nancy) Fraser, Orono, MN; seven grandchildren: Julia (Chad) Isakson and Leslie (Frances Tsukano) Losby; Ben, Megan (Michael Trotti), and Sam Wagner; Will and Catherine Fraser; and two great-grandchildren: Jane Isakson and Emma Losby. Sister-in-law Nancy Skivington, niece Erin (Michael) Heuer, nephew David (Christine) Skivington, and cousins Jack and Duncan Smythe also survive.

Because we’re not too sure what really makes us tick, we should not be too quick to judge the way others choose to live their lives. This assumes, of course, that their lifestyle does not interfere with ours. We can provide funeral services in any price category, starting with minimum cost immediate disposition. The cost of a funeral is entirely a matter of family preference.

Jeff Deragon

Alhart Funeral Home

Bob was a 1948 graduate of Caledonia High School in Caledonia, NY. He attended Princeton University for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served in Stuttgart, West Germany during the Korean War. Bob returned to complete his bachelor’s degree at the University of Rochester. Following his marriage to Jane, Bob continued his academic career earning his master’s degree and Ph.D in history from Cornell University. Graduate study brought Bob and Jane to the University of Glasgow, Scotland for a year and later to London for dissertation research. Scotland and his Scottish heritage remained very important.

Bob initially taught at Williams College in Williamstown, MA. In 1967, Bob and Jane moved their family to Eau Claire, Wisconsin where Bob became a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire. Bob taught British history and founded the course on World War One history. He later became Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. Bob served as president of the University Senate and received the UW-Eau Claire Excellence in Service Award, retiring in 1995. Bob led a life of service: teaching and advising students, serving on numerous faculty committees, and participating in organizations such as the Eau Claire Library Board, the IFLS Public Library System, Golden K Kiwanis, the Genealogical Research Society of Eau Claire, and the Republican Party of Eau Claire County. Bob was humble but thought three things warranted mention in his obituary: he crossed the ocean 20 times by sea (initially on a troop ship and later with Jane aboard the QE2 and QM2); he visited all 26 historic English and Welsh cathedrals; and he saw all the James Bond movies in the theater. We wish to thank the staff at Founders Ridge, Bob’s home since 2017, and Optage Hospice for providing skillful and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Bob and Jane Fraser Scholarship for Study in Scotland at the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, P.O. Box 4004, Eau Claire, WI 54702-4004. Services will be held in Eau Claire at a date when people can gather safely, followed by a later interment of ashes in Mumford, NY. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Ben MacDonald Helps the Batavia Community Say Thank You! By Amanda Dudek

O

akfield resident, Ben MacDonald, was watching the news when he noticed all of the nurses, doctors, other medical staff and first responders who are still going to work every day at this time. He felt moved by their self-sacrifice and decided to do something to provide a boost in morale for everyone on the frontlines of this pandemic. The only question was what. "We wanted to figure out something that was safe, and I am from a family where food always makes things a little bit better!" explained MacDonald. "This is a pandemic that none of us have seen in our lives, and first responders need our continued support." So, he decided to create a GoFundMe to raise funds as a community to provide lunch in appreciation for medical staff and first responders, including the City of Batavia Police and Batavia Fire Department members who would be on duty or around the UMMC Hospital in Batavia on Friday, April 3rd. Of course, MacDonald had to get creative as he could not enlist the help of volunteers and buffet-style food. "I called my friend at Sport of Kings, and I asked what they thought would be a good idea," he shared. "They suggested using food trucks to make the food fresh right there and handle it as little as possible. We connected with Rob Credi and two of his Center Street food trucks as well as a Public Coffee Hub food truck and began making plans." MacDonald started the campaign on Saturday, March 28th, believing there would be about 100 hospital personnel then. "We found out there would be 300!" he said. Incredibly, his GoFundMe skyrocketed past his original $2,000 goal, soaring to $3,525 thanks to generous donations from the community. "I was ecstatic!" MacDonald exclaimed. "I know people are generous in our community, supporting different nonprofits and organizations, but donations just kept coming in. Obviously, I was really excited to see that we were going to have enough money to provide lunch for everyone."

Batavia Firefighters receive tasty lunches in appreciation for their service!

Ben MacDonald contacted Laurie in public relations at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia and arranged a space for the food trucks to park outside of the hospital. With City of Batavia police officers and Batavia Fire Department members also joining all 300 of UMMC's personnel that day, the community was able to say thank you by way of treating them to lunch. "They are seeing an ever-increasing number of COVID cases and are whole-heartedly putting their all into combatting this virus," shared MacDonald on his GoFundMe. "Residents, nurses and auxiliary staff are working around the clock to ensure the health of the ill and to prevent continued spread; they are away from their families and putting their lives at risk for the better good of the community. You want to hug everyone and say thank you," he added. "But you just can't right now." He hoped this kind act of appreciation would provide them with "a very little reprieve from everyday stress." It seems to have worked. "They were very thankful, thankful to be thought of, and I think it really showed them that everyone is behind them and that we are trying to be mindful of their safety," said

MacDonald. He made certain everything arrived and was ready to go that Friday before stepping back. "I made sure everything was good, but then my son and I sat in my truck for a while to keep them safe but to still be there if anyone needed anything." After the successful lunch, UMMC personnel reached out to Ben MacDonald with thanks, and UMMC posted the event on their Facebook page, stating "Our community has shown tremendous support amid this COVID-19 pandemic. We are grateful to the countless people and organizations that have offered supplies, food, time and talents. No gesture, large or small, has gone unrecognized. These photos only scratch the surface of the outpouring of your generosity and kindness. Thank you for standing by us in the fight against COVID-19!" To MacDonald, it was the least he could do. "They are so kind to be doing what they are doing right now," he insisted. "We want them to know that we are here for them and we are thankful for them." Those who donated seem to agree. "The people who reached out and donated, their reactions were just amazing," said MacDonald. "I appreciate them being so generous." "These are tough times," he concluded. "But I think the good in people is really going to come out." Enjoy this article? Check out this weekís other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com: •

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

REAL ESTATE SECTION

2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD Host your own welcome party Rather than waiting around for others to welcome you to the neighborhood, take the bull by the horns and introduce yourself to your neighbors in a fun way. Host an open house party and invite your new neighbors. What better way to converse with others than with food, beverages and a festive atmosphere? Plus, your party may lead to reciprocation from others.

5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www.
