CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS

Pet Place ____________________24

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: Communication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Do you store plastic wrap in the refrigerator? Many home experts will tell you that storing plastic wrap in your fridge or freezer can help with the stickiness factor -- the plastic is easier to manipulate and get into place when cold, but still stays put. Try it and see! * Keep soap scum at bay on your glass shower doors with a layer of car wax. But do NOT let the wax get on your shower floors. That could be unsafe. * Want delicious fried chicken crust but not the dripping oil? Baste chicken pieces with mayonnaise, then dredge in crushed cracker crumbs mixed with a bit of flour. Bake and enjoy.

* From L.D.W. in Illinois: “When I have a recipe, I put all the ingredients on the counter, and as I use each one, I put it away. My daughter and daughter-inlaw like the idea, as they at one time or another, have forgotten an item.” I like that one, too, L.D.W. A well-prepared cook makes a delicious meal. * Laundry soap -- liquids, powder and pacs -- should be added to the water before clothing. This allows the soap to disperse correctly throughout the water and also can avoid “grease spotting” that sometimes occurs when detergents land on dry fabric. OATKA EDITION

donfoxhvac@yahoo.com HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING REASONS TO PLANT A TREE There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Stimulus Payment Merry-Go-Round A third round of stimulus payments are on their way. But has your second one shown up yet? Next question: Did you file last year’s 2019 taxes on paper instead of e-filing? If so, that might well be the reason you don’t have your money yet. The IRS got behind on processing the paper tax forms we sent a year ago. If all had gone well, those who were eligible should have received a $600 stimulus check (the second one) by Jan. 29, 2021. The IRS has a specific page for you to check the status of your stimulus payment, but it’s only good for the third stimulus check. All information for your first and second stimulus money has been removed from their website. Confused yet? You’re not alone. Start with www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment and scroll to Get My Payment. Click on it and fill out the information. You’ll go to a page that tells you the status of the payment you’re to receive now, the third payment. If it says that payment information is Not Available, it means you’re not going to receive a payment the easy way (and might be why your second payment is still missing). On the Get My Payment page, click on Frequently Asked Questions to see what applies to you. Even if you don’t normally file, you’ll need to file for 2020 (preferably e-file) if you want that stimulus money quickly. Look for Line 30 on the Form 1040 or 1040-SR. It’s called the Recovery Rebate Credit. If you received Notice 1444 or 1444B in the mail from the IRS, it will tell you what figures to use. If you did receive the money but your financial situation has changed and you should have received a different amount, click on Recovery Rebate Credit. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, w hich is a problem w ith the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during w hich the heart can beat too fast, too slow or w ith an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs w hen rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, w hich consists of the heart’s tw o upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, w hen a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. W hile that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s tw o low er chambers, and this prevents the low er and upper chambers from w orking together effectively. Though AF does not alw ays produce noticeable symptoms, some people w ith AF experience chest pain or heart failure, especially w hen the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

S E V RA Pancake Angels Last week, we met two “Angels” at the Cartwright’s Maple Tree Inn. A great conversation ensued over the best buttermilk pancakes. It made our day special. When we went to leave, we found they had paid our check! Thank you to the two great Angels & safe travels! Elected Officials A village mayor sends out a letter endorsing 2 of 3 trustees up for election. One is elected and the one not endorsed is elected. You made it known you did not want the one as a trustee. I hope this letter was not mailed under taxpayer village dollars. I would not expect you to take such a political stance knowing this could backfire on you. It is up to the trustees to market themselves not you. As the mayor how do you do your job effectively now? We expect you to be fair and not hold grudges. Small towns have clicks but your job is to do what is right for everyone.

Easter Fun! On Saturday, March 27 the Riga Recreation Department held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. It looked a bit different this year as a parade was held instead. All egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and were lead up Main Street by Grand Marshal “Easter Bunny” and then down Buffalo Road to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. There they were met by the Churchville LEO Club members and handed “goodie bags” filled with eggs. They then went and tried guessing how many jelly beans were in

What Teacher Vacation? In response to “Teacher Vacations:” Clearly you are not a teacher and have no idea what is going on with the schools. Most of the teachers are working even harder during this to make sure their students are getting their work done remotely. To say that school tax bills need to be reduced is ridiculous. Schools have had their aid slashed due to the state being almost bankrupt and have had to do so much more with less money. Of course, there probably are a few bad apples who are not really working during this, but isn’t that the case with every profession? If you want to be mad at someone, take it up with the state legislature and governor. Don’t blame the teachers and schools for this mess.

Genesee County’s Holland Land Purchase Society and Holland Land Office Museum Face Financial Challenge EDITED BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

he year was 1894. Genesee County, New York, was growing and changing fast. Realizing the historical significance of area history could be lost, Mary Richmond founded The Holland Land Purchase Historical Society (HPHS). Its purpose? “The discovery, procuring and preservation of whatever related to the Holland Purchase lands, and all lands that had been owned by Robert Morris in Western New York.” For 126 years, it has done just that.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Sun Exposure Nearly Does in Guinea Pigs

Today, the HPHS is a 501c3 educational non-profit organization which oversees the operations of the Holland Land Office Holland Land Office Museum Museum (HLOM) and, impressively, its 15,000 artifacts. The HLOM mission is to preserve the past of Genesee County, Western New York, and The Holland Land Company for present and future generations. The HLOM features exhibits on Joseph Ellicott and early settlement, military history, agriculture and business, local artists, and other interesting topics. The HPHS/HLOM has been the overseer of Genesee County’s historical artifacts and the “telling of our history and culture” through education and programs. During this time, it survived two world wars, a depression, and the events that affected our ability to provide our community with “telling the story” of its history. Now, the HLPS and HLOM face serious challenges during the aftermath of 2020. The HPHS has been deeply saddened by the restrictions of the COVID-19 virus and the resulting inability to hold many of our community events. However, the HPHS is not discouraged by the limited number of programs and fundraisers it can physically present to the public. Instead, the HPHS director has successfully accepted this challenge, developing programming through virtual presentations such as the Artifact Video Series, Java with Joe E., Virtual Guest Speakers, and Saturday Morning Children’s Program. Additionally, its Wonderland of Trees and basket raffle have gone forward, but without the annual fundraising gala. Unfortunately, HPHS was unable to hold its annual antique show, mystery dinner theater, its summer kids’ program, a variety of concerts and speakers, its senior bus tour as well as several other on-site fundraising activities. “Our members and volunteers have always been the bedrock of HPHS/HLOM,” said Don Burkel, HPHS/HLOM President. “Now more than ever, we need financial support to continue programming, virtual events, the preservation of our extensive artifact collection, and to continue representing or history and culture for years to come.” Burkel encourages area residents to generously consider a membership or donation. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two guinea pigs. Yesterday, I took them outside to get some sun. When I came back outside about 15 minutes later, they were both lying in their cage, completely stiff, as if they had been dead for hours. I thought they were dead. I brought them inside and was getting everything ready to bury them when one of them stirred very slowly, and then the other. Today, they are not as active, and they aren’t eating and only taking a little water when I give it to them through a dropper. What happened to them? Will they be OK? -- Analia R., via email DEAR ANALIA: Guinea pigs, also known as cavies, cannot regulate their body temperature very well. They should never be put into direct sunlight or a hot room. Your pets suffered heatstroke from being out in the sun, even though it was just a few minutes. This is most often fatal. I’m very surprised that they are both alive. They need to be treated very gently for the next several days. Contact their veterinarian (one who specializes in exotic pets), but do not bring them until the vet tells you to do so. Moving them can be very stressful. Continue gently giving them water through a dropper or syringe a few drops at a time. Place little bits of cucumber, lettuce or melon nearby; these have high water content and some nutrients. Cavies are extremely sensitive to sudden temperature changes, loud noises or rough handling. Be gentle with them and keep them in a comfortable location, out of direct sunlight. Send your comments, tips or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

“I don’t know who my grandfather was. I am much more concerned to know what his grandson will be.....” ~ Abraham Lincoln

Possibly starting with the movie “Roots,” there has been an increased interest among Americans in tracing our ancestry. Few of us can identify our forebears prior to our grandparents. Certainly it can do no harm to learn more about our ethnic origin and heritage. The important thing is that we keep things in perspective. Lincoln realized that his own identity and accomplishments were far more important than his grandfather’s. Let’s all try to leave a record which our children, and their children, will be proud to use as a guide. Our record for service with sympathy and integrity is unsurpassed. Ask any family that we have been privileged to serve.

CURE!!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Recent studies show that fungal nail infections lead to a weakened immune system. During times like this we all need to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

Strategies to Reduce Risk of Colon Cancer ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 70 years old. I seem to be getting more polyps (which are removed). In the past five years, I have gone from one diverticulum to extensive diverticulosis throughout my entire colon. I try to have a high-fiber diet and use psyllium in my oatmeal daily. What more can I do? Eliminate red meat entirely and go vegan? -- J.D. ANSWER: Polyps in the colon confer a higher risk of colon cancer, and the more polyps a person has, the more frequently they should be screened, preferably with colonoscopy. There are some lifestyle changes most people can make to reduce the risk of polyps and of colon cancer. Regular exercise and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables are clearly shown to reduce colon cancer risk. Fiber has long been thought to be protective, but the results of trials have been contradictory. Among the many other possible protections to colon cancer, aspirin probably has the most benefit, but aspirin has other risks as well. People at high risk for colon cancer should discuss the use of aspirin with their doctors. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are both 72 and of normal weight. I have fought high cholesterol and triglycerides for many years and have taken various statins for a long time. My triglycerides still trend high, but my other numbers are now normal. My husband eats a ton of processed meats, all the fat he wants and drinks three to five beers per day. His lipid panel results came back today, and his total cholesterol is 167, his LDL is 90, his HDL is 71, and his triglycerides are 29! He has never been on statin drugs. His only med is lisinopril for slightly high blood pressure. What I am concerned about is a CT scan done as part of a study we participated in. My husband’s results have mentioned calcification of heart arteries over the years, and the most recent says he has “SEVERE calcification of coronary arteries.” I want him to go to a cardiologist, but his family doc says that this is not a problem and as long as he keeps his blood pressure low, he can live a long time with this. He is satisfied with that answer. I’m really anxious to hear your thoughts about him needing to see a specialist. I hope you will be able to shed some light on the calcification and the reason why it happens with such good cholesterol readings. -- D.B. ANSWER: There are several important lessons in your story. The most important is that a poor diet increases the risk for heart disease even in a person with normal or good cholesterol results. Of people with a heart attack, 21% had cholesterol levels that would not trigger treatment with a statin drug. I suspect, but can’t be sure, that your husband has blockages in his coronary arteries; the severe calcification of the coronary arteries is an indicator that it is very likely. I would add my recommendation to yours that your husband see a cardiologist. He has a LOT of work to do at improving his diet, he is drinking more alcohol than recommended and because of the coronary artery calcification, I suspect his new cardiologist would be strongly considering medication treatment to reduce heart disease risk. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER

We are also offering our vitamin line formulated by Dr. Guler with the entire family in mind. Gevity Vitamins and Supplements are available in the office.

Water helps to fight fatigue. The fatigue-fighting properties of water are another of its lesser known benefits. When the body is not adequately hydrated, it can experience muscle soreness. And fitness enthusiasts who do not drink enough water may notice their bodies require extensive recovery time after working out. Each of those consequences can be prevented by drinking enough water, and doing so can even improve performance, as studies have shown that just a 3 percent loss of body weight due to dehydration can cause as much as a 10 percent drop in performance level.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is vital.

Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. Page 35

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.
