DID YOU KNOW?

Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

TIPS FOR NEGOTIATING WITH CONTRACTORS

Do your homework. Getting the best price typically require shopping around and not settling on the first bid.Experts recommend getting at least three estimates on the same job - and be sure to let each contractor know that you are soliciting multiple bids. This alone may entice a specific contractor to give you his or her best offer up front. Avoid simply choosing the lowest bid. Look at quality of work, reputation and reviews. If you like a costly contractor more than another, see if that contractor is willing to match a lower bid to win the job.

Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines.

Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.

Wait until the ground temperature rises above 60 F. Applying herbicides when the ground temperature is below 60 F might render the products ineffective. Gauging soil temperature can be tricky, but Lowes advises monitoring shrubs and trees on the property. Once shrubs begin to bloom and trees bud, herbicide can be applied.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS

The Relaxation Specialist

Of course, some mothers may want to simply unwind with a relaxing morning at the spa on Mother’s Day. In fact, the 2018 U.S. Spa Industry Study found that the spa industry has enjoyed seven consecutive years of consistent growth, with more than 187 billion spa visits in 2017 alone. A relaxing morning at the spa can be the perfect way for moms to begin Mother’s Day before they enjoy a brunch of dinner out with their families.

Unique gifts ideas for Mother’s Day

Concert tickets: Many adults recall the days of their youth when Mom would relax while listening to some of her favorite music on a lazy summer afternoon. Why not take a stroll down Memory Lane and take Mom to see one of her favorite acts in concert? Even if you have outgrown Mom’s musical tastes, she will still appreciate the chance to spend an evening out on the town with her kids and some good music.

Looking at the Causes Behind Mobility Issues

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 79 and can move around without any problem. I walk five days a week, and my weight is normal. However, it seems to me that many people -- some younger than I am -- have mobility problems. I wonder what causes this problem. Is it lack of exercise, genes, weight, etc.? -- E.G.

ANSWER: Be very grateful that you can move around without a problem, as most people in their late 70s do have mobility issues. The most common reason is osteoarthritis, but there are many causes, such as neurological diseases, cardiovascular issues and other types of arthritis. While it is true that not exercising can lead to poor mobility, most of the time, it isn’t a person’s fault that they have difficulty with mobility. Arthritis can happen to a person of any weight and at any level of exercise.

Exercise helps the vast majority of people improve their mobility, but there are exceptions. Many people with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome are intolerant of exercise, and overdoing it can lead their condition to worsen. This syndrome has also been known as systemic exertion intolerance disease. Well-meaning physicians, friends and family might have recommended exercise to a patient, which could have caused them to have a flare-up.

Although being very overweight increases the risk of arthritis, having a normal weight doesn’t prevent its development. Genetic influences are very complicated, but they also have a role in the development of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis can also come about as a result of significant trauma to a joint.

What causes peripheral nerve injuries? Johns Hopkins Medicine indicates that peripheral nerve injuries can occur after suffering a laceration (a cut or tear in the nerve tissue), severe bruising, stretching, electrical injury, or drug injection injury. Gunshot wounds also can cause peripheral nerve injuries. Discover

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NERVE INJURIES

CAUSES OF STAINED TEETH AND TOOTH DISCOLORATION

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Stained or discolored teeth can result from food and beverage choices, poor oral hygiene, tooth trauma, certain medical conditions or treatments, and more. Sometimes tooth discoloration is unavoidable, but for many people it can be controlled with good lifestyle choices. The color of stained teeth depends on the cause. Yellow teeth result from poor oral hygiene and consuming dark foods and beverages. Brown teeth indicate tobacco use. Red wine drinkers may have purple-tinted teeth. Grey discoloration means the tooth’s nerve has died. Black spots usually indicate areas of severe decay. Discoloration can occur on the tooth’s surface (enamel) or in the tooth’s interior (dentin). Options for fixing stained teeth depend on the location and cause of the discoloration.

Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’

Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value.

Family furniture: Save chairs, tables, and other furniture passed down through the generations by doing repairs,if needed, and staining/painting to suit your current decor.

Leaving An Estate To Charity

One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed.

When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.

Wearing Hand-me-down Gowns

Brides-to-be devote plenty of time to thinking about their wedding gowns, and some women spend months scouring stores for their ideal designs. But what if the perfect gown is already tucked away in a family member’s closet?

Some brides view a hand-medown gown with a degree of skepticism. After all, people may poke fun at dresses passed on by well-meaning friends and family that feature styling that is out-ofdate (think 1980s shoulder pads). However, in most cases, dresses can be altered and turned into something that fits the new bride’s style and physique.

Wearing a hand-me-down gown is something many brides consider, especially if the dress has sentimental meaning or is a family heirloom.

Creating Inclusive Joy: Inside Grow’s Spring Semiformal Dance

Sarah Mehta, a University of Rochester student, class of 2025, majoring in cell and developmental biology and minoring in public health, is founder/director of Grow for Adults with IDDs (intellectual and developmental disabilities), aiming to provide opportunities for people with IDDs to get together, try something new or learn something new, simply enjoying life with other people.

Grow hosted its first (hopefully annual) integrated Spring Semiformal Dance on April 12th near the U of R. “ is fun evening was a celebration fostering connections and breaking down barriers,” Mehta says.

Instrumental to coordinating this event along with Mehta was Grow’s Executive Board, comprising Navya Soogoor, Hana Zhang, Zoopash Jalal, Sara Mermel, Emily Chen, and Chrysolite Dhinakaran. eir dedication and tireless efforts, starting the planning as early as the fall semester, even before the board was fully developed, laid the groundwork for a memorable evening of inclusion and joy.

e Spring Semiformal welcomed around 120 attendees, including individuals both with and without IDDs, alongside volunteers whose support was invaluable. Mehta thanks Tim Baird, Julie Simone, and their team at Rochester Holy Childhood for providing crucial assistance, as well as the U of R’s Disability Awareness Club for decoration materials to help make the event magical.

Mehta’s personal connection to the cause, rooted in her brother’s experience with Down Syndrome, imbued the evening with a deeper significance. She says her brother always raves about these fancy galas he attends in Saratoga, NY, and Mehta wanted to create a similar experience for people in Rochester.

integrated event aimed to provide a platform for people with developmental disabilities to practice social skills and enjoy themselves.

“ e results spoke volumes, with so many attendees stopping by to express gratitude for the event, saying they had so much fun,” Mehta recalls happily. Mehta says the food and performances were fabulous and everyone who attended had a great time, so their goals for next time are simply to start preparing the space more in advance to alleviate the lastminute rush the volunteers experienced.

Beyond her roles as undergraduate student, teacher assistant, and as research assistant at U of R’s Spectrum Brain Lab, Mehta volunteers at Together Include Every Student (TIES), at U of R’s cancer/surgical center, and occasionally helps at the Ronald McDonald House.

Central to Grow’s mission is addressing the social disparities faced by individuals with IDDs. “Neurotypical people tend to have more friends, go out with people more o en, and generally be more social,” Mehta notes. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities, on the other hand, typically have fewer opportunities for such social interactions. is

She acknowledges her passion for working with people with IDDs, and says no matter where her medical career takes her, even if she doesn’t work directly with people with IDDs, she will surely maintain volunteer ties to help inclusivity flourish.

Mehta says, “We all should be more inclusive, accepting, supportive of everyone, no matter their abilities.” Grow’s Spring Semiformal “brought people together, with everyone having fun together as equals, showing that people with all abilities can do everything. We should make society as inclusive as possible.”

In a world striving for acceptance and understanding, organizations like Grow and events such as the Spring Semiformal serve as beacons of hope, reminding us of the transformative power of inclusivity and the joy that arises when all are embraced as equals.

To learn more about Grow and get involved, visit their Instagram @grow_rochester_ny or email the team at grow. rochester.ny@gmail.com. Together, let’s continue to create spaces where everyone belongs.

Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation

One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

PAW’S CORNER

How to Greet

Other Dogs on the Street

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a sweet but somewhat rambunctious little mutt, “Karla,” who is about 13 months old. e problem is that she wants to jump and bark at other dogs when we’re out for a walk. How can I calm her down? -- Jen in Duluth, Georgia

DEAR JEN: Reactivity is natural behavior for a puppy that loves to play with other dogs, but of course, it’s not desirable behavior. Jumping and barking can trigger an aggressive response from some dogs, or stress out other dogs. It can scare humans.

Fortunately, it’s a behavior that you can moderate with a specific, daily training regime that will teach Karla to stay calm on the leash.

First, gather your tools: A sturdy leash that is about 5 feet long (no retractable leashes allowed), a harness and a pocketful of Karla’s favorite treats, cut into tiny pieces. I recommend the harness over a collar because it allows you to strongly control Karla if she starts jumping, without risking an injury to her throat.

Next, teach and reinforce three crucial commands: sit, stay and heel. From the moment you put on Karla’s harness and leash, to when you take them off at the end of the walk, she needs to follow your commands. Karla should sit calmly while you attach and remove the leash. During the walk, she should remain next to you, with a little slack in the leash. If she starts to tug ahead, stop, command her to sit and, once she sits, start off again, giving the command “heel.”

Keep the training positive, and remember that it will take time and consistency. As she learns what you expect from her, Karla will become a great walking companion.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER

Utilize in-vehicle energy feedback. A recent study from researchers at the Institute of Transportation Studies found that drivers who used driver feedback devices in their vehicles in an effort to save fuel improved their gas mileage by about 10 percent. Many modern vehicles are equipped with such devices, and drivers can learn to use them and reap the rewards with less frequent trips to the filling station.

A GUIDE TO BUYING PRE-OWNED VEHICLES

Exercise caution with private sellers. Buying from a private seller is a bit riskier than utilizing a dealership. That’s because the due diligence falls on you as the buyer. Ask for a vehicle history report (commonly known as the CARFAX®) for any vehicle you’re considering, even if it means paying for the report. The report will list any accidents and other red flags. If a seller refuses to offer the report, pass on the deal.

STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS

Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well.

Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day, but can be especially hazardous in the early morning sunrise and late-afternoon sunset.

A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement. Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET

BATHROOMS: Bathrooms also tend to bear the brunt of winter weather, as mold and grime can accumulate throughout a season in which it’s too cold to open bathroom windows to let fresh air in after bathing. Inspect ceilings, tubs, shower stalls, and floors for any signs of mold growth or grime. Mold growth in a home can lead to respiratory problems and exacerbate existing conditions such as asthma, so it’s best to inspect bathrooms for any signs of mold growth throughout winter. If you have let that slip, prioritize such inspections come spring cleaning time.

Each mumbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

Here’s a Tip

* It’s tough to eat home-cooked meals as a single eater. Most recipes are geared for multiple portions, and you probably don’t want to eat the same thing for five days straight. Try this: Get together with some friends and have a potluck. Each guest brings an entree and at least two side dishes, in extra-large portions, and his or her own le overs containers. Split the food up amongst the guests, packaged as meals. Everyone can cook once and eat for a week.

* Did you have too much summer fun last year? Be ready to soothe that sunkissed skin this year with frozen aloe vera. Use an ice-cube tray to freeze aloe vera gel, and let the soothing begin!

DID YOU KNOW? When remodeling a home with the ultimate goal of making it more attractive to prospective buyers, homeowners can benefit from taking stock of current trends, including the style of home that’s most popular. According to a 2020 Homes.com survey of more than 5,000 adults across the United States, modern farmhouse is the most favored house style. The survey asked participants to choose from a selection of styles, including mid-century modern ranch, Spanish colonial/ southwest, bohemian craftsman, Italianate, French chateau, and Tudor. The modern farmhouse style was the most popular choice in 42 of the 50 states, proving that home style preference is not beholden to geography. Respondents gave a host of reasons for favoring the modern farmhouse look, including that the style is “aesthetically appealing but not boring” and that it looks “simple, cozy, and not too busy.”

VENT BRIGHTER

There are good people out there!

Pharmacy disappointment

On Good Friday, I went out for a fish fry at a local well-known restaurant and had a wonderful meal. When the server asked me if I needed anything else, I said just the check. She said it’s been taken care of, along with the tip. I have no other way to say thank you to whomever did that, so thank you! I’m in my 80s and that’s never happened before, so I say there are good people out there!

Mustangs contribution to the Pop Up Pantry

I would like to thank Mrs. Auble and her students in the Entrepreneurship Class for collecting and giving food to the Pop Up Pantry in Dansville on April 15th. I was one of the fortunate ones to receive your bag of goods. It not only helped out my household but three other households that were in need of food. So, thank you again! An older Dansville citizen.

The large grocery store pharmacy I use in [local town] is always so backed up with customers. There is often a very long line inside at the counter as well as at the drive-thru window. I never use the drive-thru because of how busy it is, but the other day I decided to utilize it because there was only one car at the window. I was the first car waiting behind the car being serviced at the window. That car took 19, yes 19, minutes at the window! I did not have the option to leave because during the first few minutes of waiting, several cars (at least 7 or 8) took their place in line behind me. So I was stuck there. If there is an issue with an order that is taking that long, why can’t pharmacists ask the car/customer to pull around or come inside so that the other customers in line are not stuck for that long? I only decided to use the drive-thru that day because I was tired of waiting in line at the counter, and thought with just one car ahead of me it would be quicker. What a mistake.

Animals in grocery stores and carts

I understand that many people love their pets like family. Pets, however, do NOT belong in stores where groceries are sold. Regulations are posted at the entrances of all of the groceries in our area stating that service dogs ONLY are welcome. Pets, therapy and emotional support animals are NOT service dogs!

The potential risk of contamination from fur, dander, or pathogens is a valid concern, especially concerning food items. These animals especially should be prohibited from being placed in carts. Pets may carry parasites and germs, as well as leave fur, dander andallergens, and a cart that held a pet is unsanitary! It concerns me that the management and workers do not enforce these rules.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK

Information is now seemingly always at our fingertips thanks to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. While these devices may theoretically allow workers to become more productive, research suggests otherwise. Professor, researcher and author Gloria Mark with the University of California, Irvine says that activity switching and being frequently interrupted, including self-interruptions like checking social media and email, can lead people to develop short attention spans. That inability to focus for extended periods of time can adversely affect efficiency.
