Homeschooling Tips

Employment ____________________31

You may not have signed up to be a homeschooling parent, yet suddenly you find yourself teaching your child—or children—from home. Don’t worry! I believe you can help your child learn. As an experienced homeschooler, I offer you these tips for a successful homeschool experience!

Give & Take _____________________6 Home Services _____________________8 Hometown Events ____________________25 Kidz Korner ____________________20

Set your own pace: Your child’s school may have started classes at 8:00am, but 8:30am may work better for your family. That is okay! Design a consistent schedule for your child that works best for your family. Certainly, remaining in the ballpark of their start time will be beneficial when transitioning back, but do not feel restricted by the schedule they had.

Passages ____________________16 Pet Place ____________________29

Establish an Order: As trivial as it may seem, set and maintain an order in which your child completes his or her work. If your child completes math before social studies, he or she should do this every day. Not only does this lend consistency to the routine, it also helps you to know exactly what has and has not been accomplished on any given day.

Puzzle Answers ____________________27 Real Estate ____________________19

Ask for Advice: Homeschooling has become a more popular option in recent years, and chances are you know a family who homeschools their children. Reach out to them and ask for tips. They are usually more than happy to share. A popular Facebook group called Homeschoolers of Greater Rochester NY has nearly 3,000 members and is another wonderful resource. National Geographic’s website offers homeschooling tips for families as well as offering resources for educators which parents may also find useful.

From National Parks and undersea adventures to international museums and famous landmarks all over the world, you and your child can explore and enjoy many of the world’s treasures virtually. (NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill. Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes Serves 3 or 4 1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges

Members of:

1 ½ Tbsp olive oil Free Community Papers of NY and

1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling Heat a grill or grill pan to mediumhigh. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, oil and salt. Arrange sweet potatoes on the grill or grill pan and cook until lightly charred and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through. Sprinkle with more salt and serve.

Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup®, grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On April 11, 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte, emperor of France, abdicates the throne and is banished to the Mediterranean island of Elba. Barnum dies in Bridgeport, Connecticut, at age 81. Barnum had requested that a New York paper run his obituary before he died so he could enjoy reading it, and the paper obliged. * On April 12, 1908, a fire at the Boston Blacking Company in Chelsea, Massachusetts, leaves 12 dead, 85 missing and presumed dead and more than 17,000 homeless. More smart food choices for seniors · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. · Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, canned or frozen produce tend to be high in micronutrients, including a variety of important vitamins that are essential for all components of health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advises eating dark green vegetables, such as leafy greens or broccoli, and orange vegetables, such as carrots and sweet potatoes. · Energy-boosters: Choose whole grains that can provide sustained energy by way of healthy carbohydrates over processed grains. · Bone-friendly foods: Calcium-rich foods, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, can prevent calcium from being leached from the bones, which contributes to conditions like osteoporosis. · Digestive system-friendly foods: The digestive system slows down as the body ages, as the walls of the gastrointestinal tract thicken and digestive contractions that push waste along may slow down and become fewer. Foods rich in fiber can promote proper digestion by moving food through the digestive tract mor easily. High-fiber foods also may help naturally reduce blood cholesterol levels. · High-iron foods: Without enough iron in the body, a person may feel tired and lethargic from a reduced production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the rest of the body. A lack of oxygen in body tissues from anemia can be serious, says the National Council for Aging Care. Tofu, spinach, lentils, pumpkin seeds, and fortified breads and cereals are high in iron. Smart food choices can help seniors live long and healthy lives. Page 15

BRAG-WORTHY GRANDPARENT GIFTS Recipe collection: Pull together the family’s culinary legacy from old recipe cards, word-of-mouth instructions and more. Print or publish the recipe book and distribute to grandma or grandpa and other members of the family.

Hope, which springs eternal in the human breast, is most essential to us all. No one’s life is perfect, but we can all hope for improvement. The most wretched, destitute beggar in the world can carry on only if there is hope… perhaps only hope that a crust of bread can be obtained to sustain life. Those who enjoy good health have reason to be hopeful. Their good health should permit them to work effectively toward the achievement of whatever they hope for. Good health is more precious than gold; it is the basis for hope, and hope is everything. We hope that you will ask us to explain the advantages of pre-need planning of funeral services. Phone us for an appointment, without any obligation.

BREEZE THROUGH SPRING CLEANING

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY

Spring heralds a season of fresh starts and grow th -- and w hat better w ay to start anew than w ith a little spring cleaning? Taking the time to get organized can make all the difference -- and it can make the most cluttered closets and dirtiest corners a breeze to clean. W ith the right tools in hand, organizing any messy space becomes a mangeable task. You can save time and money by getting cleaning supplies, like dusters, sponges and automated air fresheners.

Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.

What Are the Benefits of Medical ID Tags?

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about medical bracelets and necklaces. I’ve never seen any recommendations as to what conditions would warrant wearing one nor what the inscription should say. When are they either necessary or beneficial? -- D.A.M. ANSWER: Medical ID tags can be useful. They serve to alert medical personnel of potentially important medical conditions when someone is not capable of providing that information, whether due to temporary incapacity (such as being unconscious in a motor vehicle accident) or permanent disability (such as intellectual disability). In my opinion, the most appropriate use of these tags is when there is a potentially life-threatening medical condition that would not be obvious to emergency medical personnel. Some examples of these would include anaphylactic reaction to medications or latex; the presence of an illness that can cause temporary disability (epilepsy, diabetes, Addison’s disease); and medical conditions that might affect use of some common treatments, such as bleeding disorders, organ transplant status and medical implants (such as implantable defibrillators). Personal and contact information is a natural set of complementary information to have on a medical tag. Some newer tags include electronic information, but this is in its infancy. These include the use of near-field technology to let emergency personnel read the information (if they also have the technology); phone numbers the emergency personnel can call to get more information; and QR codes to allow emergency personnel with a smartphone to go to a webpage with more detailed information. Most smartphones also have the ability to store information that can be read in an emergency, even by someone without the person’s phone password. I recommend taking advantage of this feature. Many of the ID tags I see have information that is not likely to be helpful. Listing chronic conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol is not necessary. Finally, one of the biggest benefits of a medical ID tag is a little peace of mind.

Caring for you and the community since 2001.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Regarding a recent column: If a body does not need help in maintaining pH balance, why does the consumption of different foods cause changes in urine pH? -- K.F. ANSWER: The body has two main organs with which to regulate pH, the acid/base status of the body based on food intake, exercise, medications and other causes that would perturb the body’s pH, which is very tightly regulated and slightly alkaline at about 7.4. The more important and faster-acting is the lung. By increasing the respiratory rate, we excrete more carbon dioxide, which is in equilibrium with carbonic acid. Breathing more deeply and quickly can move the blood pH toward the alkaline side. This usually happens without our being aware of it. The kidneys are the other important organ for long-term regulation of pH. The kidneys can regulate reabsorption of carbonic acid in the tubule, increasing or reducing acid secretion. So, urine that is more acidic than normal may mean the body is ridding itself of excess dietary acid and thus making blood pH more alkaline. Ammonia is another way the kidney can regulate pH balance. Blood pH does not vary more than a minute amount from its expected level except in cases of critical illness, disturbances in kidney function or diseases that affect control of breathing.

WHAT PREGNANT WOMEN MIGHT EXPECT Pregnant women should make dental checkups part of their prenatal care regimen. Between 60 and 70 percent of women experience “pregnancy gingivitis,” due to rising progesterone levels. As a result, there is an increase in the flow of blood to gum tissues, making them sensitive, swollen and more likely to bleed when brushing and flossing. Because this condition does not disappear after delivery, gingivitis should be treated by a dentist. In addition, a condition known as “pregnancy granuloma” (sometimes referred to as “pregnancy tumors”) may occur during the second trimester. It is characterized by painless purplish-blue growths that develop between teeth. Some disappear after delivery, while others require surgical removal to prevent a buildup of plaque.

Avoiding gum disease and achieving optimal dental hygiene success is not all that difficult. Almost everyone can do it with a modest amount of time invested daily. Keeping up with home dental care as well as scheduling periodic cleanings and wellness exams are two important steps toward accomplishing the goal of a healthy mouth. For full-service dental care for all members of your family, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment. Our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Pregnancy granulomas, which are not actually tumors, occur in 2% to 10% of pregnant women.

I would like to express our appreciation for Anthony at Top’s pharmacy in Hamlin and give a shout out to all of those who must continue to work so that others can benefit. my family, Anthony was as cordial as always. He was busy but still engaging. In these horrific times, it’s nice to still see others have a smile on their face. As a customer, I appreciated that. So, once again, thank you for still providing our needs when it comes to filling our prescriptions. To everyone, continue to stay well. Once again, thank you for a job well done. Maybe then they would be able to be nice to others around them. Maybe not.... Stop being so abrasive and obnoxious. You end up only hurting yourself and pushing away others around you. A big shout out to all the dedicated men and women, who are extending themselves for perfect strangers. What a lesson of what kindness is all about! A big thank you to those in the medical field. You are all truly heroes! With all the chaos and uncertainty in the world concerning the corona virus, each one of you are on the front battle lines. You are all truly dedicated people, who, at the risk of your own lives, unselfishly forge by using disposable gloves and plastic newspaper tubes or other plastic bags to pick up and carry out what other careless folks have left behind. You can put your hand inside the bag, pick up other people’s trash without touching it, then turn it inside out and take it to the nearest garbage receptacle and dispose of it. As I sit in my home, snacking and channel surfing, the nurses, doctors, etc., are pulling long shifts without letting up. You leave your family, children, spouses to serve the needs of the community. How many of us would be able to do that? My heartfelt appreciation to you all. Stay safe.

looking at what people leave behind. In a time where so many are coming together and helping, being true hero’s, it is sad how some individuals can still be so ugly. Yes, that’s a strong word, but sadly true. Some people wouldn’t say hi or wave if their lives depended on it. They go out of their way to be the same disgruntled people they have always been. I don’t know how they can stand themselves! It could explain why they don’t have many, if any, friends. My mother and father always showed interest and genuine kindness in others. I was taught to treat others the way you would want to be treated. I would like to pass that advice to the above mentioned. If you were a nice person, perhaps you wouldn’t have such difficulty sleeping! At least I can sleep at night.

CHURCH BELLS TO CALL TO MIND CURRENT CRISIS

On Sunday, December 8th, 10:30am the bells at Our Lady of Mercy rang out for the first time since spring of 2017, after extensive work to replace the mechanisms that ring the bells, including the motors, the striker, and controller. The ceremonial ringing included a blessing of the new system by Fr. Matthew H. Phelan, O. de M., pastor.

Many of our Hometown Events were submitted weeks ago, prior to the national guidelines regarding social distancing.

Since that time, each day, from 8am to 8pm, the bells have tolled in clock tower fashion at the top of the hour with a single toll at the bottom of the hour. In addition, the Angelus bell – a call to prayer for Catholics – has rung at noon and 6 p.m. [The traditional 6am ring is bypassed out of respect for local codes.] On weekends, a call to prayer rings 5 minutes before each Sunday Mass.

If you’re interested in attending one of this week’s events, please be sure to check with the organization to make sure it’s still taking place.

This past weekend, a request was made by some neighbors to alter the ringing schedule out of consideration for health care professionals who were working overnight hours due to the COVID-19 crisis. The pastor decided to temporarily silence the bells in order to consult with the pastoral council and weigh the opinions of parishioners and the citizens of LeRoy. After a weekend of consultation, lively discussion through social media, silence, and prayerful consideration, it has been determined that bells shall be programmed according to the following parameters:

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be upset about having to deal with problems that are no fault of your own. But you can turn the annoyance into an asset by showing how quickly and how well you can resolve them. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s fondness for tidiness pays off when you untangle a situation that seems hopelessly snarled. You might later be surprised to learn who will be expressing his or her gratitude. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you can tackle your assignment the way you prefer, it might be a good idea to at least ask for suggestions. Who knows? One or two might even turn out to be helpful. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Make all the changes in your plans or proposals that you feel are necessary before -- repeat, before -- you submit them to your colleagues. You’ll come off looking more decisive that way. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might feel a mite intimidated in a new environment, be it a job, a classroom or meeting the future in-laws. But enter with a big smile, and everyone will see you as a real takecharge Cat. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This could be a romantic time for you if you can set aside your cynicism and let yourself believe that someone really cares. If you’re already in a relationship, expect your partner to be extra-loving. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to shed any doubts about your abilities. You’ve proved yourself in the past, so why not accept that you’ll do just as well, or better, in dealing with the new challenge ahead? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your suspicions might be on the mark, but unless you can prove what you assume, you need to exercise that Scorpion discretion and let events unfold without your assistance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful not to go over the top this week. Avoid overeating (especially of the wrong foods), or drinking too much, or working too hard. You can do it all, but in moderation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A family matter is given to you to resolve because you have the gift for bringing quarrelsome kinfolk together. But while you’re playing Dr. Phil, don’t neglect your career obligations. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone of importance shares your goals but disagrees with your plan to achieve them. Never mind. Defending your methods with logic and facts earns you admiration and respect. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Consider getting away, perhaps for the weekend, despite all the demands made on your time and energies. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle it all with your usual finesse. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sense of honesty that makes people believe and trust in you.( c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. THE UNBREAKABLE SPIRIT OF B Y

A M A N DA

D U D E K

Easter

It is strange in its very concept. Yet with Easter approaching in just over a week on Sunday, April 12th, it is possible that many of us will not be able to gather to enjoy our usual Easter festivities and traditions. Those who welcome the holiday with an Easter Service may only be able to do so remotely. Families groups may not exceed more than 10, and Easter egg hunts will likely be cancelled. Much like Seuss’s Grinch found of Christmas, however, what beats at the heart of Easter can never be stolen away. Easter is a time for celebrating rebirth. Rabbits, chicks and eggs all speak to its long-standing ties to the earth’s renewal each spring. It is also a deeply religious holiday for many. For Christians, it is a time to rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ the Son of God and His victory over death. For them, it reaches back to the foreshadowing found in the Jewish Passover, which is also observed around this time each year. During the Passover holiday, which takes place from April 8th-16th this year, those of Jewish faith celebrate their people’s historic and miraculous deliverance from slavery. In each celebration, there exists a common thread, the recognition of something we so badly need, especially in worrying times: hope. Rev. Henry Moore of the Hope Center in LeRoy has said that hope is “a confident expectation that believes tomorrow will be different, and more specifically, better than yesterday.” What an interesting definition and how personal! Recently, ending COVID-19 has been a hope that has united us both nationally and globally. While it is true that some have chosen a path of selfishness, many more have reached out to their neighbors in various ways, particularly through digital platforms, to offer support, supplies and simply to check in on the wellbeing of those around them. Many of us have been jettisoned, willingly or not, from the breakneck speed at which we usually fly through everyday life. With few places to go, more people are getting out into nature locally. You may have experienced seeing some of your neighbors for the first time, from a socially safe distance of six feet or more, of course, while checking out local hiking trails. This greater awareness will surely pull us closer together.

5 IDEAS FOR

Easter at Home Turn your home into a cheerful festival of spring. Encourage children to craft fun and colorful decorations for Easter. Watch their creativity and imaginations soar as they do! Enjoy your Sunday Easter Service remotely. Consider casting it to your living room TV and gathering your family together. Little ones may even want to dress up in their Easter finest. Hold an Easter Egg Hunt in your home. Get everyone in on the action by giving each family member different color eggs to hide and seeing whose eggs take the longest to find. Make favorite Easter dishes with your kids. Often in the rush to get everything made in time for guests, we are too hurried to teach our children cooking basics and importantly the stories of our family food traditions! Create a new family tradition. Traditions often come from significant events experienced together. Perhaps your new addition can reflect a way your family has bonded during this time.

In fact, now perhaps more than ever, it has become clear that our communities will continue to thrive when we cause them to thrive. Our local businesses will prosper when we go the extra mile for them. Our children will be successful students when we provide the extra support they need. In short, many Americans across our great nation are taking action. We are caring for our neighbors. We are buying gift cards and ordering takeout. We are engaging in our children’s education within our homes and are so thanksful for teachers. It’s beautiful to see! While there are still new COVID-19 cases across the United States, we know it is only a matter of time before we succeed in bringing this concern to a close. One of the best things we can do to care for our neighbors is to stay home as much as possible while connecting in other ways. Phone calls, video chats and uplifting social media posts serve as little points of hope, illuminating this dark sky. Some Easter traditions may be put on hold this year, but hope will never be one of them.
