Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with foodgrade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hardboiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals. Page 3

Thank you! We would like to thank Dr. Fischer & staff at Perry Pet in Livonia for their kindness & compassion when we took our beloved Tali in during an emergency visit last week. Although their schedule was full, Dr. Fischer took time to answer all our questions & offer all of our options for treatment. Although the outcome was not what we had hoped for, we will be forever grateful for their caring. We are so fortunate to have this facility in our area. Joan & Jim Briggs

Shopping fear Recently I was at local [store] In line behind a couple that stole items under their coats in shopping cart, even had a small duffle bag on bottom rack full of who knows what?? I watched the cashier as she made a choice to keep quiet about it, and then realized that I was alone shopping and I should keep quiet as well, out of fear. I think Covid gave us all a heavy dose of fear that will linger for a good long time. Shame on us to be driven to silence out of fear. Woke bullies, dishonest people, are all whining, self absorbed pitiful creatures. Why do they feel so entitled? Maybe because of silent little mice like you and me, just working hard, minding our own business while the spoiled brats take over our world. I don’t want to die over a stolen bag of donuts, but I’d like to be proud of my own reflection in the mirror. Fear sucks

Pick up the poo! If you have a dog and are going to take that dog out for a walk, please bring your doggy poop bags! I saw a woman allow her dog to poop on my front lawn. Then, she walked away without picking it up. How irresponsible! Now, I have to clean up her dog's poop or risk stepping in it. Please pick up after your pets!

Happy Lights! Thank you to the people on the corner in Mumford with the rainbow lights. It makes me happy to drive through town. It's a refreshing change from the daily negativity. Thanks for supporting everyone!

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Reduce energy costs and improve the safety of your home through energy efficiency measures in owned or rented property.

Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire. In fact, in the fourth century, the Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as a day of mourning and prayer. In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal. Christians believe that commemorating the death of Christ helps to remind them of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death. The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including nonChristians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion. During these services, the church organ and bells are silent.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring. PAVING & SEALING

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Add a pop of color with planters. Awe-inspiring colors can make a landscape stand out from surrounding properties. Flowers, bushes and plants may be the first thing homeowners consider when trying to add color to their lawns, but planters can provide a more immediate way to give exterior grounds some color. Bold planters won’t lose their color in a matter of weeks like many flowers do, and homeowners can switch planters so the colors align with the season. For example, some pastel planters can evoke the spirit of spring, while orange planters can be filled with mums to give a landscape an autumnal feel.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE Rental potential and the local labor force: Location is a significant factor to consider when investing in real estate, but recent shifts in how and where people work could change the real estate investment landscape. A 2020 Gartner, Inc., survey of more than 300 financial executives and leaders in the finance industry found that roughly 25 percent will move at least one out of every five of their on-site workers to permanently remote positions in the years ahead. Economists note that this shift to remote working could be among the more lasting trends to emerge from the pandemic. Before investing in real estate, prospective investors should examine local trends to see if more and more locals are working remotely, and whether or not that’s affecting the market for rentals.

The Day of Ashes commemorates the repentance of sin. On Ash Wednesday, Christians have ashes placed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross in recognition of their need to repent. Many churches host Ash Wednesday services, and those who receive the ashes are not only reminded of their mortality and sinfulness, but also of the opportunity for absolution. Christians typically fast on Ash Wednesday, though some simply abstain from eating meat.

Byro Rescu Squad Calls for a Rescue of Its Own! BY BRAD NICKERSON

I

magine calling 911 for your emergency and having nobody arrive! In times like these, it could be a possibility; but the little Byron Fire Department and Rescue Squad does not want this to happen to you. Last year, this small town squad answered a whopping 276 calls for 911 in and around the town of Byron. These are the most calls answered from any volunteer ambulance squad in all of Genesee County!

chicken bar-b-que this Memorial Day, Monday, May 30th, after the Memorial Day parade. This will be held at the Byron Fire Hall around 11:30am until sold out. It will be a drive-thru event. The cost this year will be $15.00 for a half chicken with homemade macaroni salad, cole slaw, and a roll. Our firemen will also be outside seeking boot donations.

The Byron Rescue Squad (BRS), started in 1976, has never received any tax dollars. They are funded only by donations. The dedicated volunteers of this small but devoted squad are ready and willing to help. However, their 14 year-old ambulance is aging, and repairs are becoming very costly. The squad is in desperate need of a new one. The old, outdated ambulance currently in use will last a little longer, but action is needed quickly, otherwise the community may be without the critical care vehicle needed to respond to emergencies.

The cost of a new ambulance is approximately $200,000. It will take a united push forward to realize this dream. Patching up our old ambulance is increasingly becoming an unsustainable financial burden, draining the funds we need to operate. At some point, the BRS will have to take the current ambulance out of service. Hopefully, Byron Rescue will be able to purchase a new one before that time comes! Byron Rescue Squad is reaching out to anyone who would like to help others by donating to this more-than-worthy cause. Byron is a great place to live and raise a family, filled with wonderful, caring people. Our community should be very thankful for that! COVID has been a time to reflect on and be thankful for what we have. We know not everyone has the knowledge and ability to help when a Medical Emergency happens. It is sometimes difficult for our volunteers to stop in the midst of their day or night to run to the fire hall, and head out to help those who are probably having the worst day of their life. Yet, that’s what our volunteers do day after day. It is up to everyone who can help to help a little!

The cost of nearly everything is rising. Items that were always available are now unpredictable or unavailable. This is the case with medical supplies as well. Luckily, dedicated BRS volunteers are still more than generous with their time and are happy to arrive at nearly every emergency call in our community, ready and willing to assist. Each call requires a driver and at least one EMT. Depending on the emergency, many times additional fire personnel are required to manage the scene, give lifting assistance, and providing whatever help is needed to safely transport patients to the hospital. Once at the hospital, ambulance personnel are required to remain with the patient until the hospital’s ER staff releases them and takes responsibility for that patient. With COVID and hospital staff shortages, that wait time has increased. However, releasing the patient to the hospital is not the end of the rescue squad’s duties! It sometimes takes an hour or more to complete the required documentation. Every year, Byron Rescue sends out a letter to each household requesting donations. They have received donations from some residents and are very grateful for those donations. These funds help cover the cost of gas, supplies, training, and light maintenance of BRS vehicle and equipment. This past year, Byron Rescue received a most generous donation from an average couple (who wishes to remain anonymous). Their donation of $10,000 really jump-started BRS’ most needed mission: the purchase of a new ambulance. Other donations come to us via United Way and a GoFundMe page on the Byron Rescue Squad Facebook page, also located at gofund.me/c0d1d2f7. There are also pledges from some generous individuals made in their last will and testament. This is a very thoughtful way to say thank you and a generous final giving gesture to keep Byron a safe place to work and live. In addition, BRS does continue to do fundraising; however, fundraising is very time consuming, and takes away time volunteers might otherwise have for themselves or helping others. Nevertheless, we are planning a

THE MEANING BEHIND EASTER SYMBOLS Clothing: New clothing is another symbol of Easter that traces its origins back further than many Christians may realize. It’s customary for present-day Christians to don their Sunday best when attending Easter Sunday Mass, and the tradition of looking sharp on Easter can be traced to the early Christians, who would wear new white robes for baptisms during Easter services. Eventually, all Easter celebrants began to wear new clothes during Easter services.

The terms “hospice” and “palliative” are not interchangeable. Hospice care is a form of palliative care geared toward patients with terminal illnesses facing their final months or weeks of life. Palliative care, according to WebMD, aims to ease pain and provide help to people confronting a serious illness, even if it’s not necessarily life-threatening. Palliative care may include assistance for those with cancer, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, or any number of conditions. Illnesses can make it difficult to live life fully, and palliative care is used in conjunction with other treatments to improve quality of life.

HOW TO HELP SENIORS ADAPT TO AUTOMOTIVE TECH Teach one tech at a time: It can be overwhelming for drivers of all ages to adapt overnight to all the tech in their new vehicles. When teaching senior drivers how to utilize various driver assistance technologies, take it one tech at a time. When coupled with your patience, this approach can help seniors avoid being overwhelmed and increases the likelihood that they will embrace the tech in their vehicles.

Avoid Predatory Loans From Some Pet Stores

* A garden manicure is what my mother calls it: When working with plants and dirt, rake your nails across a bar of soap. The soap prevents dirt particles from lodging under nails, and the soap washes away easily when you are finished. Happy Gardening! -- JoAnn * “If you have a spade with a long handle, you can transfer common measurements to the handle. Just lay a tape measure alongside the handle, and use a black marker to note common spacing, like feet and inches. Then, when you put in plants, you can check quickly whether they are spaced correctly. Very handy!” -- P.E. in Arkansas

* “Garden tool storage doesn’t have to be hard. Fill a wide mouth bucket with clean sand. Add a half quart or motor oil and stir. Then use the sand to clean and store your garden tools like shovels, rakes or hoes. The sand/oil mixture helps clean the metal surfaces, and the heaviness of the container lets you stick them in the sand without fear of everything falling down, like it would if you leaned them along a wall.” -- E. in North Carolina * Here’s a recipe for a quickie bird feeder or bath: Flip over a nice-size flower pot, and place the pot’s tray on the top. Fill with seed or water. The birds will thank you -- maybe even by eating some nuisance bugs along with the seed. * If the string on your trimmer is always breaking or jamming, try this old trick: Give the coiled string a spray with vegetable oil before you thread it. It lubricates the line, making it less likely to pull and less likely to break.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently read an article about a predatory lender that is targeting people buying dogs at some pet stores. These loans have insane interest rates as high as 130% to 189%! Please warn your readers to avoid taking out high-interest loans to buy a new pet. So many pets are in shelters, waiting for their forever homes. Don’t buy from a puppy mill! -Janie F., Sarasota, Florida DEAR JANIE: Thank you for sounding the alarm! A recent CBS News report warned about a lending business called EasyPay Finance that charges huge interest rates. Find the article here: https://tinyurl. com/26b8mdcz/ Predatory loans and pet stores that source from puppy mills are a nasty storm of awfulness. Often, puppy mill dogs arrive at the store in poor condition, and new owners who’ve just paid thousands of dollars to buy a dog now have to shell out thousands more for medical care. The message here is clear: Don’t take out a high-interest loan to buy a pet. If you spend time researching the perfect dog for your family, then you should also spend time studying the financial aspects of dog ownership. Do business with reputable breeders -- you should be able to visit the breeder and see the conditions your prospective pet lives in, meet the puppies and their mother, and discuss their care. Good breeders care about their dogs’ welfare. If you’re going to pay thousands of dollars for a pet, choose this route. Shelter pets are another option. If you aren’t breed-specific but want a wonderful companion, contact the local shelter. Adoption fees are a few hundred dollars, but that is significantly less than what puppy mills are charging. And you’ll get a healthy dog that’s ready for a new family. It’s a win-win. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Breaking News Alert! Turn Off the Television I learned a lesson this week when I discovered I’d spent over 10 hours glued to the news on television. Afterward, I was depressed and full of anxiety. I knew that couldn’t be good for me. It makes sense that a gym chain turned off the TVs in their locations in 27 states, believing that cable news wasn’t good for a healthy lifestyle. And this was several years ago, when the news was comparatively milder than it is now. Consider how much different our lives -- and the news -- are today, and it makes a lot of sense to avoid an overdose of what’s going on in the world. My newest tactic is to use a timer. At the top of the hour, I’ll turn on a cable news channel, watch for several minutes ... and then turn it off. Whatever is new will be talked about then, but it’s often a repeat of the top of the previous hour. What do we do instead once we turn off the news? Change to a different channel, perhaps one that shows re-runs from a previous era. The “Andy Griffith Show” comes to mind. So do “My Three Sons,” “I Love Lucy” and “Columbo.” Then there’s premium fare like The History Channel, Smithsonian Channel and even best of British TV channels. Or we can turn the television off altogether and, now that spring is here, go outside and walk. Or start a new garden. Or talk to neighbors who are also escaping the television. There are specific health reasons to get away from the television news, and sitting too long is at the top of the list. It leads to memory decline, anxiety, stress ... which leads to insomnia and changes in diet. We think we need to keep up with current events ... but at what cost? (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an elderly woman who has never perspired and would like to know why. Heat makes me very sick. I love the outdoors, but can be out only a short while in the warmer weather. No one seems to have an answer for me. -- P.M. ANSWER: The name for the condition of no sweating at all is anhidrosis, and there are several causes. There are rare conditions people are born with. These are a possibility, since you have never perspired. However, nearly all of these rare diseases have other significant symptoms you don’t mention. Damage to sweat glands can be seen in autoimmune diseases and diseases that can destroy sweat glands. None of these is likely, as they too have additional symptoms you would have identified during your life. Likewise, you don’t mention medications, which may have lack of sweating as a side effect. I suspect you don’t have a diagnosable disease but rather that you are on the far end of the normal range for sweating (this would be called hypohidrosis). Just as there are people who get drenched with sweat in mildly warm weather, there are some who sweat very little. Since sweating is a major way of keeping cool, you are at higher risk for heat injury, including heatstroke. Avoiding hot weather, as it sounds like you’ve done, is wise. Sun protection (e.g., wearing a wide-brimmed hat) is also wise, as is making sure you have enough fluids. Avoiding excess heat becomes even more important as you get older, since an older person has less ability to adapt to heat than a younger person. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BRUSH UP ON YOUR TONGUE Tongue brushing, a trending topic in oral health, is an easy, quick step to add to daily brushing and flossing routines. Lightly scraping or brushing the tongue aids in removing plaque and bacteria, thus minimizing risks of gingivitis and other periodontal diseases. Tongue brushing or scraping helps improve taste, freshens breath, and eliminates harmful bacteria to the gums, thereby preventing cavities. A light scraping of the tongue after regular brushing and flossing involves applying light pressure to the scraper across the surface of the tongue several times, from back to front. Signs of an unhealthy tongue, such as pain, discoloration, or tenderness for an extended period of time indicate the need for appointment to visit the dentist.

brushing, flossing, and professional dental checkups can be your body’s best friends. Has it been so long since your last dental visit that you can’t remember when it was? Then why not take charge of your dental health and call us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for an appointment? You’ll find that nothing is more economical than regular professional attention to your oral hygiene. At 6 Batavia City Centre, we are committed to delivering the most current state-of-the-art care in a relaxed, friendly environment. P. S. HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Develop telecommuting policies. In analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey, GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com found the population of regular work-at-home non-self-employed persons grew by 103 percent between 2005 and 2014. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
