TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP

Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs.

Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

CARPET/FLOORING

MAKE FLOORS SHINE LIKE NEW

Restoring shine to flooring involves making sure the floor is clean. Dirt and grime can diminish the color and look of flooring. Homeowners are urged to use products designed for their particular flooring material, such as wood, laminate, stone, or vinyl. Products oftentimes are not interchangeable. Begin by thoroughly sweeping or vacuuming the floor. Clean along all surfaces of the floor, including under furniture where dust and dirt tends to accumulate. Use the hard-floor setting on a vacuum to avoid having the brush rolls scratch or damage the flooring. Laminate can scratch easily and hardwood flooring is not impervious to dings and scratches. Quite often a dry mop or a static-charged mopping cloth effectively picks up debris left behind on many flooring surfaces.

Although many commercial cleaners can clean flooring, homemade mopping solutions are sometimes just as effective. Keep in mind that wood, laminate and vinyl should not be soaked in water. A little liquid can go a long way on these surfaces. Water and other liquids can seep between laminate and wood boards, potentially contributing to swelling and damage over time. Also, resist the urge to use too much soap. Soap can leave behind a residue that dulls the finish of the floor.

Vinegar-based solutions can work well on a wide variety of flooring types and help cut through any sticky residue left behind from cooking, cleaning and the activities of daily life. Many wood-flooring cleaners and polishes are oil-based to condition the wood in the process. Whenever making one’s own solution, test a small amount in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it will not damage the flooring.

SIGNS YOUR SOIL MIGHT BE COMPACTED

Loss of vegetation or poor plant growth: Compacted soil prevents water, nutrients and oxygen from accessing the root zone. As a result, plants, including trees, are vulnerable to disease and even death.

CORRAL ENTRYWAY CLUTTER

The entryway to a home is the first thing guests experience when coming inside. It also can be the first place residents drop their belongings after long days at school or work. As a result, entryways can quickly be consumed by clutter. Taming such messes takes a mixture of ingenuity and planning.

Homeowners hoping to clear their entryways of clutter must first decide what they want to get out of the space. Will it simply be a decorative spot with photos and other home decor on display? Or is functionality the primary goal? Once that decision has been made, take inventory of which items, such as shoes, keys, umbrellas or coats, need to be in the area, which don’t (i.e., old mail). To make things more organized, rearrange the former while removing the latter.

Next it is time to assess storage needs and what’s already available. User-friendly storage items may need to be purchased to make the room as functional as possible.

DID YOU KNOW?

Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE

Plant perennials around the property. Well-maintained perennials grow back each year, making them ideal for homeowners who don’t have the time or desire to map out new gardening arrangements each spring. Planting perennials also is a great way to add color around the property without breaking the bank.

Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they
at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than
utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources. Medication Used for Perimenstrual Asthma Poses Health Risk

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 55-year-old perimenopausal woman who developed asthma a few years ago. My symptoms always start right before my menstrual cycle. My doctor ruled out allergies as the cause. I used to get colds and sinus infections premenstrually in my younger years. Most medical practitioners don’t see the correlation between hormones and respiratory symptoms. I sometimes take 10 mg of prednisone when I’m wheezing more than usual, and it seems to help. Is this dose putting me at risk for diabetes if taken regularly? -- B.S.

ANSWER: Perimenstrual asthma is a wellrecognized condition that is nevertheless not well-known by most nonexperts. It is less likely to be caused by allergies and more likely to be aspirin-sensitive -- meaning that aspirin, or other anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen) commonly taken by women during menstruation, can trigger an asthma attack. Maybe a quarter of women with asthma have perimenstrual asthma. As you say, it is thought to be the hormone changes around menstruation that trigger the asthma.

Oral contraceptives used continuously prevent large changes in progesterone and estradiol, and may be helpful in managing perimenstrual asthma. Although I didn’t find a lot about it in literature, I suspect that when your periods stop, your asthma symptoms will get better.

Increased medication at the time of menses is frequently needed. However, because prednisone, even at the fairly small dose of 10 mg, does increase risk of diabetes, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, glaucoma, cataracts and many other conditions, oral prednisone is not my first choice for medication in this situation.

Inhaled steroids would be one choice, but they take a while to begin working. One recommended treatment is the oral medicine montelukast (Singulair), which has been proven effective in a small study and starts working right away.

HOW TO SELF-TEST FOR SKIN CANCER

Checkyourbackandbuttockswithahandmirror.Keepthehandmirroroutafterexamining your neck and scalp and use it to check your back and buttocks for warning signs.

REVERSING GUM DISEASE

Gum disease, also called gingivitis, happens when gums are chronically inflamed and infected. Common signs areswollen, tender, andbleedinggums. Gingivitis is sometimes called early gum disease, and it can be reversed with proper oral care and maintenance. Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis, and is not reversible or curable. It happens when the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets thatcausebonelossandrootdamage. If you are in the early stages of gingivitis, it’s not too late to improve your oral hygiene and reverse the disease. The best ways to both avoid and reverse gum disease are brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and having dental cleanings every six months.

Cavity-causing bacteria and its resultant damage can be controlled if

we deal with bacterial plaque activity on a daily basis. A toothbrush alone, however, no matter how often used, cannot do the whole job. It takes the combined effort of smart eating, conscientious daily brushing and flossing, and professional visits to promote total oral health as well as complete body health. If it’s been too long since you treated your teeth and gums to professional care, now would be a good time to call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment (585.343.4246) at 6 Batavia City Centre. We create great smiles!

P.S. Advanced periodontitis can cause tooth loss, and the bacteria associated with the disease can lead to or worsen a number of serious health conditions.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness.

“There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

* My mom was dealing with a rough health patch recently, and my dad was in charge of all her doctor visits. There was a lot of follow-up to keep track of, and many different doctors. He used a wallet-size photo holder to corral all the different appointment cards to put them in order of appointment. He really did a great job, and Mom’s all better now. -- Y.R. in Ohio

TEX-MEX LAYERED BEAN SALAD

Prep time: 20 minutes

Servings: 8-10

1 large red or yellow bell pepper, seeded and chopped

1/3 cup chopped red onion

1 bag (16 ounces) iceberg lettuce, carrot and cabbage salad mix

1 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend

2 cans (15 ounces each) READ

3 or 4 Bean Salad, drained

1/2 cup low-fat mayonnaise

1/2 cup low-fat sour cream

2 tablespoons finely chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce

1/2 cup crumbled tortilla chips (optional)

small avocado, sliced (optional)

In 3 1/2-quart salad bowl or souffle dish, layer bell pepper, onion, lettuce, cheese and bean salad. Mix mayonnaise, sour cream and chipotle peppers. Spread over top of salad. Cover and refrigerate up to 8 hours.

Just before serving, sprinkle top with chips and sliced avocado, if desired. Toss to serve.

* A fast, cheap and effective treatment for leg cramps is drinking a little bit of pickle juice. I’m not sure if it’s the vinegar or the combination of vinegar and salt, but it works -- and fast! My grandpa told me about this, and recently I have seen it in magazine articles and on television shows. Nothing fancy, just take a big slug of the juice at the very first sign of a cramp. -- E.E. in Maine

* Here’s a tip for brides: For the couple of weeks before your wedding, wear your wedding shoes around the house several times a week. This breaks them in, and you will be more comfortable with all the standing and dancing on your special day!

* I think cleaning wipes are so very handy, but they can be quite expensive. To make my own, I add cleaner to baby wipes, right in the container. I don’t have babies in the house, but I do mark the container well so that nobody would use it for his or her skin. They work well for me. -- via email

* To thread a needle, run the tip of your finger and thumb over a stick of lip balm, then roll the end of the thread between your fingers. It keeps the threads together and goes through the eye of the needle much easier.

MOMENTS IN TIME

The History Channel

* On May 17, 1965, after a two-year investigation, the FBI declares the supposedly pornographic lyrics of “Louie Louie” to be officially unintelligible.

* On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens, a volcanic peak in southwestern Washington, violently erupts. The massive blast killed 57 people and leveled nearly all vegetation as far as 12 miles away.

* On May 19, 1997, a 3-year-old boy dies of avian influenza in Hong Kong. Before the outbreak was controlled, six people were dead and 1.6 million domestic fowl were destroyed. The virus mutated and caused 62 more human deaths in Asia by 2005.

How to pack a suitcase:

Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

Q&A Master Gardeners

I’ve read a lot of plant packages saying plants are deer-resistant and then the deer come through during winter and decimate them anyway. How do I know which aredefinitelydeer-resistant?

Although a plant may be marketed as deer-resistant, unfortunately, deer are curious and hungry creatures. Mothers and fawns, especially, are known for their voracity and their tendency to nibble many plants as they move along a landscape. The

Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

result is that a planting of young pawpaws or currants, both marketed as “deer-resistant,” might have all the leaves chewed off overnight. After eating a “deer-resistant” plant, an individual deer may feel sick or realize (after a few big bites) that they don’t like the taste of the leaves. If the plant is small to begin with, it may be already dead after being munched. And there will likely be more, unfamiliar deer that also need totastetheplanttocometothesame conclusion.

The only sure-fire solution is to use netting while the plants are small. Some have suggested planting allium crops around young plantings, as deer don’t like the smell. But, I think physically blocking the plants from deer will workbest. If youareabletogrowthe “deer-resistant” plant out to a large

enough size — perennials usually reach this stage around 2 or 3 years –you can let deer graze on it and learn theirlessonwithoutworryingthatthe plant will die from its leaves getting eaten off.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

PAW’S CORNER

Readers Sound O on Dogs’ Front Yard “Gi s”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have so many thoughts a er reading the letter from the woman with the shared driveway whose neighbor leaves her dog’s poop on her side.

I’m of the opinion that life would be more enjoyable if people learned to meet others where they are. e dog owner clearly doesn’t want to pick up her dog’s poop, and I don’t think checking with an HOA or municipal ordinance will change that. Maybe she has mobility issues. e writer says she and her neighbor “get along ne,” and there’s a LOT to be said for that. If I were her, I would simply buy poop bags and clean up a er the dog. If the neighbor sees her and says something, I would say: “I’ve asked that you pick up a er your dog, but I don’t want that to become a big issue between us because we get along so well. Your friendship means more to me than my taking a few minutes to clean up the driveway.” -- Susan W., via email

another reader shares their advice:

I have had this issue several times in the past. I have successfully resolved this issue every time it has come up.

I used a new tool to solve it -- the power of social media. My solution was simple: When I observed an individual allowing their canine to defecate on my property, I announced loudly from my front door that if they did not clean it up, I would locate their property and defecate on theirs as well. I made the same announcement on the neighborhood’s Facebook page.

Aside from the occasional beer can thrown out of a vehicle full of teenagers, we have been at peace. -- Zack in Murieta North

Green Warsaw Celebrates 1st Arbor Day with Tree Planting Event

Earlier this year, a group of local residents in Warsaw, NY, founded Green Warsaw, a volunteer-run community tree board that hopes to bring more trees to the Village of Warsaw. Green Warsaw is connected to other community teams around the Finger Lakes region through the Color Your Community Green network, facilitated by the local nonpro t organization, Climate Solutions Accelerator.

Within just a few months, the Warsaw Tree Board has become a part of the Warsaw Village Board and received an Arbor Day Quick Start Grant from the NYS Urban Forestry Council, with additional funding from the USDA Forest Service.

To commemorate this year’s Arbor Day on Friday, April 28th, Green Warsaw hosted its rst Arbor Day Tree Planting event, which was attended by roughly 100 residents of the Warsaw community. During the hour-long event, community members gathered to plant two trees in Warsaw Village Park.

e rst tree was planted in memory of the late Steve Baker, a beloved Warsaw community member who taught at Warsaw Central Elementary School for 19 years. e second tree planted was dedicated to Mayor Emeritus Joseph Robinson, who recently retired a er 16 years of service as Mayor of Warsaw.

“We are very pleased with the turnout and how smoothly the event progressed,” shared Suzanne Coogan, a member of the Green Warsaw team. “ e tree memorials for Mr. Baker and Mr. Robinson are signi cant for us all.”

In addition to the tree memorials, the event hosted a “PoeTree” contest, where elementary students from Warsaw Central Elementary School were invited to write a poem about trees. Four students received the PoeTree Award and recited their poems at the event.

Attendees of the event included Emeritus Joseph Robinson and former Deputy Mayor Cynthia Appleton; current Mayor Dan Burling; Department of Public Works Superintendent Shane Evans; Je rey Souder, Liaison to Assembly Member David DiPietro; Gregg Torrey, Aide to State Senator George Borello; Department of Environmental Conservation Forester Nate Morey; and many of Steve Baker’s family members.

Green Warsaw shared that the tree planting event was the rst of many events to come. With dedication and a passion for the local community, Green Warsaw hopes to acquire the Tree City USA Growth Award in the future. As a volunteer-run organization, Green Warsaw seeks local residents’ support and connection to help protect the Warsaw environment.

Green Warsaw’s Mission

While bringing more trees to the Village of Warsaw is an aesthetically pleasing project, Green Warsaw shares that trees o er much more than their beauty. For example, it is argued that cars drive slower on streets lined with trees, potentially due to the calming e ect trees can provide. Trees also provide residents with a physical bu er from car tra c. is is signi cant in terms of overall pedestrian and biker safety.

Residents are o en more likely to go for walks on streets with trees, as the pleasant environment welcomes natural beauty and maybe even some shade on a warm summer’s day. Getting outside for fresh air can do wonders, and even a short stroll down the street can make a good day that much better. Tree-lined streets can also feel quieter, as cars may drive slower and trees absorb much of the tra c noise.

e increase in foot tra c is highly bene cial for local businesses located on tree-lined streets. More pedestrians mean more opportunities for businesses to grow, which in turn directly impacts the local economy. Tree-lined streets also positively impact property value, making a town more pro table.

Finally, tree-lined streets are great for improved air quality, which is bene cial for everyone. Between the safety, health, and economic bene ts street trees provide, it is no wonder Green Warsaw is passionate about the work they do and their mission to bring more trees to the Village of Warsaw.

HOW THE HELP OF A WORKER CONSOLED AND COMFORTED ME

Rosemary was a woman at a receptionist desk in a waiting room adjacent to the surgical area at Rochester General Hospital. I had accompanied my wife to this surgical area about 1PM a week back. After she was checked in for surgery I went to the waiting room. About 1 1/2 hours went by and I got nervous since I did not know anything. I asked Rosemary as she was about to leave work if she could get me any information on my wife as it was now 2:30PM. She made a call and all she could find out was that my wife was taken in for surgery a little over 1 hour 15 minutes prior. She could tell that I was very nervous. She stated she would make another call to see if a message via phone could advise of how surgery was going and when it might be done. She then stated that she would not leave until a call came back. That call came back at 3:30PM. Rosemary found out that surgery was going well and would be done within 2 hours. As Rosemary left she gave me two free passes for valet parking.

Favoritism by coaches in sports

It never ceases to amaze me how some sports coaches do not have a transparent process that is fair and based on prior performance (goals, batting average, runs, TD’s, tackles, etc). If a player is close friends with the coach, they are almost a “shoe in” to make the team. Also, why is it that the coach’s son (no matter their level of skill) always makes the team? As a parent who has multiple children that are all good athletes and starters in multiple sports in high school and college, I’m frustrated having observed numerous acts of favoritism, which leaves good character athletes on the bench or off a team. Especially disappointing is watching senior athletes in high school sit the bench as coaches play freshman or sophomore players. It’s unfair to constantly sit a senior who will soon graduate and never have the chance to play in high school again. It would be nice to see more transparent, communicative, and equitable player selection and give all players an opportunity to play.

Communication

If you are going to post an item for free and only use an email address, please have the courtesy to reply, even if the item has already been claimed. Some people may receive the Pennysaver sooner than others, so the item may already be gone when you see the ad. That is fine, but it only takes the same few minutes to respond as it took to put the ad in. I was very interested in an item and responded more than once, but never received an answer. Thank you.

HOW TO FIND A HOBBY

Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways.

A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people.

Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette.

Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch.

Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money. Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time.

Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY

Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how manystepstheycantakeinadayandthengraduallyworkingtoward10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

THE TYPE OF LODGING ACCOMMODATION
