Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second. ●

Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

Gardeners What do I need to start composting? Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 30 percent of what we throw away and could be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. All composting requires three basic ingredients: • Browns - This includes materials such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs. • Greens - This includes materials such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County • Water - Having the right amount of water, greens, and browns is important for compost development.
What are the easiest flowers area and raked it in. After keeping it watered to plant and take care of for on dry days, the plants came up nicely and bloomed with a vengeance. Mrs. McCarthy beginning gardeners? I’ve never had a problem sowing and growing was thrilled and got many compliments from zinnias. When I was a teenager myself, my visitors who admired her carpet of many neighbor hired me to tend, weed, and grow colors. Other flowers I would recommend to her flower beds. In a 2’ x 6’ spot I planted a beginners might include nasturtium, pansies, packet of mixed zinnias in early summer. and sunflowers.
Your compost pile should have an equal amount of browns to greens. You should also alternate layers of organic materials of different-sized particles. The brown materials provide carbon for your compost, the green materials provide nitrogen, and the water I turned over the soil and chopped up the provides moisture to help break down clumps. RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS
HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

* “If you’re melting chocolate in your microwave, do yourself a favor: Line the bowl with wax paper or parchment paper. The chocolate is still easy to stir, but when you take it out, you can scrape all the chocolate off the paper so that none is wasted!” -- A.A. in Florida * “Place a bit of clear tape over the spot where you are going to drive in a nail to prevent the nail from cracking drywall. It will go right in. Also, if you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking it. This does the same thing -- it will keep the wood from splitting. You can even keep a travel-size bar of soap in your nail apron for just this purpose.” -P.K. in New Jersey * Shopping for bagged frozen vegetables? Give them the squeeze test: If the vegetables feel hard and solid, they have thawed and refrozen. Choose another bag. * Keep musty smells out of your linen closet by stashing a box of baking soda on one of the shelves, just as you would in the kitchen. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc. STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING
HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it.
Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

HOW AGING ADULTS CAN MAINTAIN THEIR MENTAL ACUITY Aging is associated with or linked to a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that won’t impact adults’ daily lives much at all. While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of age-related cognitive decline. Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks. But age-related cognitive decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near or pass retirement age.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Finding the Cellphone That’s Right for You When it comes to buying a phone, there are so many choices that the decision can be difficult. Much depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend. What can we do on our phones? Depending on the type of phone (and our skill level), we can make calls, get voicemails, look at maps, write shopping lists and notes, roam the internet, play games, receive and send text messages, take photos, have face-to-face meetings and more. Some of us, however, would rather keep it simple. We want to make and receive calls, period. If a phone comes with a few more features, that’s fine, but we probably won’t use them. How to choose: Decide what you need the phone to do. Ask a lot of questions, especially of tech-savvy family members. Think about whether you want to pay upfront for your phone or have a long-term contract. Decide whether the phone is only for emergencies or if you’ll use it daily. There are a handful of good phones out there if you search the internet for “phones for seniors.” You’ll find dozens of websites describing the various phones now available. Visit the phone stores near you, if possible. You’ll need to handle the phones to be sure you can read and press the buttons with ease. Smaller phones are lightweight, but aren’t necessarily the best if you can’t see the screen or the buttons are tiny. The bigger ones, on the other hand, might be too heavy. Look into the flip phones as well, the ones that fold in half for ease of carrying in a pocket. Look for discounts. For example, you might get a discount if you’re an AARP member. If you’re on Medicaid or SNAP benefits, see if you qualify for the Lifeline discount. And remember: Keep it charged!

WHAT SMALL BUSINESSES CAN DO TO ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITIES Sponsor a local youth sports team: Youth sports team sponsorships are a relatively inexpensive way to create brand awareness. The National Alliance for Youth Sports, Inc., reports that sponsorship costs vary from organization to organization, though they may cost as little as $100 to around $5,000 for the season. In return for that investment, businesses gain exposure to athletes, athletes’ families and friends, volunteers, and countless others who may see players in uniform on game day. When compared to the cost of advertising online, on television or on the radio, youth sports sponsorship provides a great return on investment.

Avon Trading Post 110 West Main St., Avon Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Oakfield’s Susan Zeliff Shares Calling to Support Veterans & End Food Insecurity BY A M A N DA D U D E K
W
hat do the Warrior House of WNY, The Community Center in Oakfield, and The Goose Food Pantry have in common? The woman at the center of all three: Susan Zeliff. Since the launch of the Warrior House of WNY Inc., Susan Zeliff has felt a call to help others that has only grown throughout the last five years. When Susan Zeliff and her husband obtained farmland in Orleans County, it came with a house on the property. “We had no need of another house at that time,” shared Zeliff. “At the time, we were part of a circle which included several Veterans, and they mentioned how nice it would be to get a bunch of Veterans together to hunt on the property.” The idea struck a chord with the Zeliff family, and in 2016, the Warrior House of WNY Inc. was created and obtained 501(c)3 status. “There are many Veterans in my family,” said Zeliff. “It is really about humanity. Veterans are the ones who have given the most, and at the end of the day, when their job is done, it is still not over. I don’t feel people are always the most respectful about what they have given. Our Veterans often come back different people, affecting their mentality, their relationships, and their families.” Zeliff is pleased to see supporting local Veterans has made a positive impact on her sons. “They hear [the Veterans’] stories and make friends with them,” she explained. “I can see that they are getting it. I feel like this is what we have been called to do.” This has only been the beginning. In 2018, Susan Zeliff came face-to-face with another need, one she also felt called to meet. It began during Zeliff ’s first week substitute teaching at her children’s school. “That first Friday, I learned about the backpack program,” she said. “I wondered why certain kids were receiving these items.” Zeliff was told that this was all some children had to eat over the weekend. “For my kids, this is a 20-minute snack!” she exclaimed. “To think this was what they were going to have over the weekend broke my heart.” Today, Zeliff and her fellow volunteers supply snacks for about 160 students each day. “It transpired so seamlessly,” she said. “Our community has been amazing. They really stepped up! We serve 80 families, and we could not do it without our incredible volunteers and generous donors. They deserve all the kudos!” Initially started as more of a school closet, the food pantry moved to an outside location after COVID struck. However, as its new building is about 6,000 square feet in size, Zeliff plans to incorporate both a community center and a farmers market, as well, making fresh produce more accessible locally. For the Zeliff family, helping those around them is simply what they do. “My family—myself, my husband, and our four kids—have that farmer mentality that is all about giving back,” explains Zeliff. “My husband practices regenesis farming which focuses on putting back into the soil those nutrients which have been stripped for so long. We are not just here for ourselves; we are here to give back.” She contiuned, “I think everyone is called to do something,” she continued. “These are the pieces to which we feel called. Our ultimate goal is to teach our children that this is important. Just because an experience is

not happening to us or to someone we know does not mean it is not impacting us and people we know.” The Zeliff family is now planning a location in Wyoming County where Veterans and their families experience retreats which could double as an event space. “Our goal is to bring whole Veteran families together,” said Zeliff. “At the same time, we realize we have to raise funds. We figure people are already in need of spaces to rent for their events and meetings, so this would be a natural fit and benefit the community, as well.” In the meanwhile, the Zeliffs will host a grand opening for their Community Center in Oakfield at the same location that houses their food pantry: The Goose. “On June 11th, we are going to have our grand opening from 9am-3pm, and everyone and anyone is invited. We will hold a 50/50 and a big basket raffle for which our high school Honor Society is currently selling raffle tickets. We will also dish up free strawberry shortcake!” Both the middle and high school student councils hold food drives for The Goose, and several high school students will be on-hand to help with the grand opening. “I feel time is a greater commodity than the dollar,” she said. “I hope people consider donating even one hour a week to push that goodwill into their lives.” As for all those who volunteer with The Warriors of WNY Inc., The Community Center, and The Goose, Zeliff stated, “Not one person here is getting a paycheck. Every dollar you give goes directly to those in need. I hope everyone visits and sees how impactful giving their time can be.” Enjoy this article? TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Cause of Chronic Cough Has Doctors Stumped
Serving Our Community for over 20 years. Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
---
Accepting New Patients.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I picked up a cough while traveling in Europe more than two years ago. No other symptoms have ever presented. Since that time, I have received every test imaginable, including spirometry, multiple breathing tests, CT scans, X-rays and most recently a bronchoscopy. Nothing was discovered through any of these tests. Other than the cough, I am very healthy. The cough is driving me crazy, however. I have been prescribed every type of medication, and nothing helps. My doctors are at a standstill and have nothing further to offer. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know I can’t live my life with this cough. I avoid a lot of personal interaction because it is so disruptive to constantly be coughing. I would greatly appreciate your help with this, and any advice regarding what steps need to be taken next. -- P.M. ANSWER: Chronic cough (lasting more than several months) is most frequently a result of acid reflux, asthma or postnasal drip, although there are many more causes, including infection, which would be a concern given that you have a clear idea of when it started. Despite an extensive evaluation for cough, it is not that uncommon that people are left with no explanation but with a persistent cough. There are other, less-common treatments at this point, some of which your doctors might not have tried. The first is the medication gabapentin (Neurontin). This is used for a condition called laryngeal neuropathy, and I have had a few spectacular cases where the cough disappears entirely. People have written saying that their doctor prescribed the medication for them after reading it in the column and they also had relief, even after decades of persistent coughing, so I think this condition may be more common than I have ever thought. A second has been a cough suppressant. I am very cautious about using opiate drugs, and it is certainly not appropriate for some people, but cautious use of tramadol in selected patients has been successful in reducing, but not eliminating, cough. Just yesterday in the clinic, one of the residents I supervise had a patient with chronic cough who had dramatic improvement through the use of speech therapy. Looking it up today, I find trials showing significant improvement, if modest, with this approach, as well as several ongoing trials. Given the potential side effects of gabapentin and tramadol, I think I will be making more referrals to my speech and language pathology colleagues, and suggest you speak with your doctors about some of these options. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.
We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
VIRTUAL REALITY GOES DENTAL A recent innovation in dental practices, virtual or augmented reality (VR/AR), can be used in a multifaceted approach. When worn by a patient, VR or AR headsets provide a virtual or digital distraction, especially effective for patients who are anxious or fearful. This distraction provides visual and audio stimulation the patient can focus on while the dental health professional examines and administers treatment. One recent study illustrated that using virtual reality had a significant impact on pain management in patients. It reported a “consistent drop in perceived pain” when using VR. Using VR in a dental practice also helped to create empathy between the dental professional and the patient, which led to a perceived higher quality of care.
No matter how you look at it, the reality is that when pain interferes with the enjoyment of your life, making simple daily acts of living, such as talking, sleeping, chewing, and yawning, you don’t have to just accept it as the norm. Turn instead to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for a treatment plan for a pain-free future. Learn why others in our community make our office at 6 Batavia City Centre the go-to place for comprehensive family dental care. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. P.S. The first VR head-mounted display (HMD) system, The Sword of Damocles, was invented in 1968 by computer scientist Ivan Sutherland and his student Bob Sproull.

National FROG JUMPING D A Y WHICH FROGS ARE THE SAME? National Frog Jumping Day has turned into a tradition that came to life from the idea of a short story. Mark Twain, one of the most famous and celebrated authors in literature, published his first short story named “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1865. The premise of the story is about a man named Jim Smiley, a compulsive better. He trains a pet frog he names Dan’l Webster and bets his frog can jump higher than all the other frogs in town. Inspired by this story, Calaveras County in Northern California started hosting a Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee during the third week of May. Their main event is the frog jumping competition. One frog named Rosie the Ribeter has held the jumping record at 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches since 1986.

A turtle is most safe when all of him is tucked into his shell, but he makes no progress until he sticks his neck out. There is always some hazard in everything we do. If we get up in the morning, we may slip in the shower and break a leg. If we never get out of bed, we may develop bedsores. Life is a constant succession of risk-taking activities. We should not let this dismay us. We should do everything possible to minimize the risks, then go ahead, if we expect to make any progress. Let us explain the advantages of making one’s own funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Phone for an appointment in our office or in the privacy of your own home, if you prefer.

Bumblebee Prejudice You know, why does everyone hate the bumblebees that are just starting to come out this time of year? I, personally, enjoy seeing the chubby things buzzing about the newest dandelions, sipping nectar and loading their leg pockets with pollen. I feel that too many people get the urge to lay a dust-rising stomp on those cute things when they see them buzzing about their business. Well, I have something to say to you, mister, mind your own beezness!
S E V RA Random Act of Kindness! My 13 year-old son and two friends gathered together some change and took scooters over to Byrne Dairy for ice cream yesterday. As they were counting out their coins, two separate, kind individuals offered them a few dollars to help make up the difference. My son said afterward, “Mom, that kind of generosity makes me want to help other people like those folks helped us.” Thank you, whoever you are, for making a positive impression (and for the ice cream)! Money Well Spent! I would like to thank the beautiful young woman who handed me $5. She said I dropped it as I was cashing out at the Salvation Army in Batavia. Thank you so very much for your honesty! May all good and wonderful things come your way. - Mary Answered Prayers Prayers were answered on April 29th by a Batavia woman named Virginia. We were in need of a puppy stroller for our handicapped doxie named Symon. Virginia called us and said she had a stroller to fit Symon’s needs. On Sunday, we took a ride and met this awesome lady at a fast food place. She was very pleasant as she brought the stroller to us. In today’s world, there are still great and awesome people. God bless you, Virginia! Thank you so much. Symon really enjoyed it. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness! - Symon’s Mom

Big Price Tag Our local library proposes spending an estimated $16.6M for a new building. I love the library and use it regularly, as did my children who continue to have a passion for reading, for which I am thankful. While we need to do something to expand the size of our library and its services, this proposal is not it. The community has not had the opportunity to review the “space study” behind the proposal. Additionally, the timing is poor. We are just coming out of a pandemic and facing record-high inflation. Now is not the time to raise the “Library Tax” from just over $800k to $2.5M annually. We need to do something to modernize our Library as well as to expand its size and the services it can deliver; however, I believe there are other options which would better serve our community. I will be voting “no,” but I still love our library. Paying Off Debt Will taxpayers please pay off my mortgage and car loan even though I did sign for them, accepting the responsibility to repay them? What a pile in Washington!

Keep private conversations private. When the phone rings while you are in public and you don’t want to allow the call to go to voicemail, answer the call and immediately and politely explain that you are in public. This indicates to the person on the other end of the line that you do not want to broadcast potentially sensitive information to strangers, while also showing those around you that you respect them enough to reserve such conservations for private settings.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your recent column about using caution in the purchase of specific breeds of dogs or adopting from a shelter. Please advise your readers that there is a third option. Almost every breed is assisted by a rescue group, usually handled by breeders. Locating such a group for a specific breed can be done by contacting the American Kennel Club (AKC). We had a wonderful Bernese Mountain Dog that was too small to be a show dog, and a Sheltie whose father was a champion but was still too large to be a show dog. This gives adopters the breed they want and dogs who otherwise would end up in shelters -- and possibly be put down -- get a family instead. -- Kathy F. DEAR KATHY: Thank you for highlighting this excellent option. The AKC Rescue Network pulls together over 450 rescue groups, dog breeders and specialists in rehabilitation and rescue to save dogs that would otherwise be placed in shelters or euthanized. Find more information about their work at www.akc.org/akc-rescue-network. Breeds are listed alphabetically to make them easier to locate. Fostering and rehabilitation of dogs through the network is somewhat unique in that dogs stay in the foster/rehab until they are rehomed. Breeders and dog fanciers are among the most enthusiastic participants in fostering and rehabilitating dogs. They take on the expense and time commitment to work with specific breeds and prepare them for a loving family. But they also get to know the dogs, their temperament and their needs -- so that they’re matched with the right people. Check out this network and the work that they do. Thanks again, Kathy. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK Information is now seemingly always at our fingertips thanks to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. While these devices may theoretically allow workers to become more productive, research suggests otherwise. Professor, researcher and author Gloria Mark with the University of California, Irvine says that activity switching and being frequently interrupted, including self-interruptions like checking social media and email, can lead people to develop short attention spans. That inability to focus for extended periods of time can adversely affect efficiency.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
According to a 2018 report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average person changes jobs between 10 and 15 times during his or her career. In addition, many workers spend five years or less in each job.
Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. EMPLOYMENT

DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.
