DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I spend quite a bit of money each year on my two Corgis: veterinary care, grooming, toys and a pet sitter. They’re also registered as therapy pets -- so they earn their keep! With all that I spend, why can’t I write off pet care on my taxes? -Harold in Palo Alto, California DEAR HAROLD: I hear you! Americans spent almost $96 billion on their pets in 2019, over $5 billion more than they did in 2018. But almost none of that can be deducted from federal taxes. Here’s what you can’t deduct: medical expenses, training or maintenance (like grooming and pet sitters). Companion or comfort animals and many therapy pets aren’t eligible for tax deductions. Here are the few deductions that are possible: * If you have a service animal -- one that is trained to assist those with specific medical conditions, such as a guide dog for the blind or a service dog that assists those with mobility or neurological issues -- the costs of buying, training and maintaining that service animal may be deductible. * If an animal is employed at your business -- such as a guard dog or the star of your Instagram empire -- you may be able to take a deduction on your business taxes. But be prepared to explain how the pet is essential to your business. * If you donate money or goods to a registered nonprofit animal shelter or animal advocacy group, this counts as a charitable deduction. Make sure to get a receipt. * Finally, you can set up a trust fund to care for your pets should they outlive you. Talk to an estate attorney about this option and any potential tax benefits.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might not like some people’s idea of a surprise. But you could be in for a pleasant shock when someone finally sends a reply to a request you made so long ago that you almost forgot about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a time to expect the unexpected. So don’t be surprised if a decision that just recently seemed final suddenly opens up and leaves you with another chance to make an important choice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a different tack on a work project might rankle some colleagues. But the positive results of your innovative course soon speak for themselves. Celebrate by doing something fun this weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Meeting new associates can be awkward, even if you’re in a high positive phase right now. Best advice: Make them feel comfortable, and you’ll soon forget your own discomfort. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a good time for you social Lions to blow-dry your manes, polish your claws and look like the Fabulous Felines you are as you make new friends and influence the influential. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expectations run especially high this week, and you should feel confident in your abilities to take advantage of what might be offered. A colleague has some advice you might find helpful. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A recent flurry of activity leaves you in need of a little breathing space, and you’d be wise to take it. Close family members should have an explanation about an emergency situation that just passed. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An insensitive act makes a difficult situation more so. But try not to waste either your physical or emotional energies in anger. Move on and let others fill the clod in on the facts of life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It’s a good time to look into that training program or college course you’ve been considering. You might have a good place to use those sharpened skills sooner rather than later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Education dominates much of your aspect during this week. You might want to start checking out those summer session courses that could help advance your career plans. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Progress often comes in fits and starts. But at least you’re moving straight ahead with no backsliding. You should soon be able to pick up the pace and reach your goals in due time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be wary of a deal that gives confusing answers to your questions. Remember: It’s always risky swimming in unknown waters, so you need all the help you can get to stay on course. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing people together and creating close friendships wherever you go. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOME IMPROVEMENT TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

585-584-9250 MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On May 27, 1939, a ship carrying 937 Jewish refugees is turned away from Cuba. The ship sailed close to Florida, hoping to disembark there, but a State Department telegram stated that the asylum-seekers must first “await their turns on the waiting list and qualify for and obtain immigration visas.” After appeals to Canada also were denied, the ship was forced to sail back to Europe. It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade. ~Charles Dickens

Make a household favorite more healthy Many beloved dishes might be enjoyed more often if they were only a little healthier. Author and former personal chef Michelle Dudash was once asked by a client if the she could make a healthier version of chicken parmesan. The result of that request is the following recipe for “Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach,” which Dudash ultimately included in her book, “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds). The recipe was a hit with Dudash’s client and will surely be a hit at home cooks’ dinner tables as well.
Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach Makes 6 servings For the sauce: 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 2 pinches salt 2 pinches freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon honey

MOST POPULAR ETHNIC CUISINES ACROSS THE COUNTRY What constitutes “ethnic” food differs from person to person. Someone of Italian descent may dine regularly on garlic-infused pasta dishes, while a person from another area of the world may find such foods exotic. In the cultural melting pot of North America, various cuisines representing countries that span the globe are within arm’s length for many people. According to Technomic, a Chicago-based research firm, 77 percent of Americans enjoy ethnic foods while dining out once a month. Around 38 percent order ethnic food weekly. In addition, many more people prepare ethnic cuisine at home. A growing interest in ethnic foods is fueled by young people. Technomic notes that millennials are more apt to want to try various cuisines and then incorporate them into their regular dining experiences. The National Restaurant Association found that 60 percent of people are likely to “tie their favorite ethnic food to their family history.” Interest in ethnic foods tends to be highest in urban areas where restaurants and ingredients may be more readily available. When it comes to the top ethnic cuisines enjoyed throughout the states or provinces and territories, Chinese, Mexican and Italian rally for the top spots on diners’ plates. While the NRA has Italian cuisine as earning topbilling, Technomic’s list says that Chinese food, at 76 percent, followed by Mexican food (74 percent) and Italian (71 percent) comprise the biggest ethnic draws. Japanese or sushi comes in a distant fourth at 32 percent in the United States. The statistics portal Statista indicates that, as of January 2015, Chinese, American and Italian foods are quite popular in Canada. However, the percentage of people who cook these foods as opposed to eating them out at a restaurant varies. Chinese food is most widely enjoyed in a restaurant setting, while Italian food is frequently whipped up at home. As immigration tides change, ethnic cuisine may change with them. However, interest in experiencing ethnic dining is likely to remain consistent. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

For the chicken: 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons whole-wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 11/2 pounds chicken breast, cut into 6 pieces, pounded to 1/4 inch 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 4 cups baby spinach 1 teaspoon lemon juice 3/4 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 6 medallions (or shredded) 6 cups cooked whole-grain thin spaghetti tossed in 2 teaspoons olive oil Preheat oven to 375 F and coat the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan with olive oil spray. To make the sauce: Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and garlic and cook gently for 30 seconds. Do not brown. With your hand, squeeze each tomato into the pan and add basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and honey. Reduce to medium heat and simmer for 20 minutes, lowering the heat as needed. To make the chicken: Combine parmesan cheese, flour, salt, pepper, and basil in a medium dish and coach chicken with cheese mixture. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of oil. When oil is shimmering, add chicken, rounded-side down, and cook until golden on one side, about 5 minutes. Arrange chicken in a baking pan. Pour remaining 2 teaspoons of oil into skillet and add spinach. Cook spinach for 1 to 2 minutes until wilted and swirl in lemon juice. Gently press spinach to release water and divide spinach on top of chicken. Spoon sauce around and over the chicken, place mozzarella on top, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bake for 15 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve over spaghetti.

Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’
Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds Gift auctions are a fun way to raise money for good causes. Organizing a gift auction requires a team of dedicated volunteers. * Enlist a team of gift-wrappers. Presentation may determine bids and increase those bids. Ask for donations of baskets and wrapping materials, such as ribbon and cellophane. Each prize can be wrapped in ways to entice bidders to bid high and bid often.
Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Furniture or “yard sale finds”: These can be stabilized and given a new look through stain/paint or distressing, but some may also lend themselves to transformation for other uses, such as turning a chest of drawers into bookshelves, a chair into a swing, a dresser into a seat, and more.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS (NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. Learn More: For further facts and tips about good driving from the experts at Driving-Tests, founded on the universal belief that everyone can be a safe driver, go to https://driving-tests.org. FACTORS THAT IMPACT AUTO INSURANCE PREMIUMS Auto insurance rates vary from person to person, even though it may seem like the offerings are the same. But no two drivers are the same, and certain factors may be affecting drivers’ auto insurance premiums without the motorists even realizing it. Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed. Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable. • Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns. That’s because greater population density often translates into more people on the road - and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates. • Gender and age are factors. One can’t step into a time machine, but it’s helpful to know that growing a little older can lower insurance premiums. The financial advice source Money Crashers say that young men usually incur higher rates than young women because statistically men get into more accidents. However, as a person moves into his or her senior years, the roles reverse. Older women may see higher rates than men the same age. • Keep make and model in mind. The type of vehicle driven can affect insurance premiums. Certain insurance carriers will increase premiums on vehicles that are more susceptible to damage. Flashy sports cars or those that do not score as highly on vehicle safety ratings calculated by industry experts may result in high premiums. Vehicles that are desirable to car thieves also may cost more to insure. Researching vehicles prior to purchase and checking the rates for those cars or trucks with insurance companies can help keep costs low. • Commuters may pay more. Individuals who use a car for business or frequent commuting may pay more than people who drive less because statistically there is a greater risk for an accident, says State Farm. Reducing commute times can lower premiums. • Tie the knot. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save. • Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar. Insurance companies weigh factors such as driving record, age, locality, and more when assessing premium costs. Drivers have some room to get lower rates by knowing the factors that determine their premiums.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “I found a small waste basket that fits right between the wall and my dryer. There’s a gap that’s about 8 inches wide. The lip of the basket keeps it from sliding down to the floor, so it’s easy to clean out the lint trap and put the waste in the basket. Also, I used a strip of hook-and-loop tape to attach a tissue holder box vertically to the wall. I stick a box of fabric softener sheets in it, and they, too, are right where I need them.” -- T.K. in Nevada * “To keep the kitchen garbage can from smelling, I put spoiled food items in a bread bag, and then put it in the freezer until it’s time for the garbage collector. I also have a friend with a compost bin, and I am doing the same with vegetables, fruit and peelings. I plan to bring the whole mess when I get to visit. The compost bin won’t care if it’s been defrosted!” -- E.L. in Virginia * “Place recipes inside of a plastic bag so that they can be handled while cooking, but not dirtied. This is especially necessary with heirloom recipes. For myself, I have made photocopies of recipes handed down from my grandmother, so the originals are safe in the cookbook. I like handwritten recipe cards because it’s like the writer is there with you.” -- T. in Ohio * Clogged drain? Don’t use chemicals. “If you do encounter a full clog, try hot water and baking soda first. If that doesn’t work, try a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Avoid plumbing snakes, which can scratch the interior of your pipes, and commercial chemical cleaners, which are caustic and a health hazard, even when used according to instructions.” -- Colepepper Plumbing in California * To keep dirt from sticking to your dustpan, spray it lightly with furniture polish. Buff with a cloth so that it’s not wet. Floor dirt will slide right off. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

hen Sam Vagg started working at the LeRoy Village Green Residential Health Care Facility 21 years ago, she probably never imagined she would one day support its residents through a global pandemic. Yet, that is exactly what she is doing. In spite of necessary changes, Vagg, assistant administrator of LeRoy Village Green, shared the impact COVID-19 has had on residents, their resilience and the outpouring of support from the LeRoy community and beyond. “When COVID-19 came through, the first wave of changes restricted visitation,” recalled Vagg. “Our residents already have so many losses, so this was hard. Just two days later, restrictions came through to stop communal dining and group activities.” The staff knew they had to act quickly. “We purchased several iPads for the building, so that our residents could better keep in touch with loved ones and each other,” shared Vagg. “We also modified daily activities. They are social distancing, but they can still play Bingo! We had a camping weekend, and we made smores,” she said. “We are planting and working with seedlings. We also reached out in support of LeRoy’s Class of 2020, posting the graduation year of many of our seniors. Some graduated in the 1930’s! Most importantly, we are spending more one-on-one time with them.” In spite of the difficulties, Village Green seniors are getting through it. “They have acclimated to this new way in almost a heroic manner,” observed Vagg. “They rarely complain. Several of our residents are quite elderly. We have about 20 residents who are 90 years old and older. They have lived through some pretty tough times. It is not fair, but they are a tough generation!”
Staff gather for a photo at LeRoy Village Green! Village Green residents “watch the news, and they have seen what has happened in other nursing homes,” said Vagg, noting residents are grateful they are being kept safe. “Mother’s Day weekend was especially difficult for many of them,” she added. “We all got through it together, and we offer as much support as we can to make the window visits as special as they can be. We also help keep our residents as connected as possible until we get through this.” While working seven days a week for the past two months like Vagg, it can seem as though there is “no light at the end of the tunnel,” but she encourages residents and staff to stay positive and disconnect from social media and its hypothetical situations. “Take things one day at a time,” suggested Vagg. The LeRoy community has played a huge role in encouraging those at LeRoy Village Green. “I have said it a lot,” Vagg emphasized. “This is one of the worst things that could happen, but if it had to happen, I am so grateful I live in LeRoy! Everyone lets us know that they are thinking of us and that we are not forgotten.”

The “Pack your Porch” food drive for the LeRoy Community Kitchen was a huge success!
Staff and residents have received many gifts, including meals for staff, flowers for residents, gifts for Easter and St. Patrick’s Day, homemade masks, cards, letters and more. “For Easter, the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant in Stafford showed up with 100 meals, serving all three shifts of our staff !” shared Vagg. Seniors and staff have also received letters and cards. “Kids write to our residents, send them pictures,” said Vagg. “During this time when you just feel so beaten down, it means so much to me and to our staff to receive a card or email letting us know we are doing a good job.” “It is rare for others to receive the support we are getting,” she continued. “It is constant and wonderful. Whatever we need, there are people offering to get it for us. It has been amazing just to know that we are not alone, that we are being thought of, and if we need anything, the community is there for us. Yes, we have a very unified team here, but it is strengthened by the community which backs us up and gives us support.” Sam Vagg also supports seniors in the community, working as a home health aide on weekends and delivering meals to about 20 homebound seniors on Tuesdays. “I am on the board of directors at the LeRoy Community Kitchen,” she said. “Sarah and Jay Tonzi recently held a food drive for us called “Pack your Porch!” Participants put a bag of groceries out on their front porch to be picked up, and we received over 100 bags!” “We are a team in this community,” Vagg continued. “We all just help each other and do our part to make sure everyone is taken care of. I am so grateful to the community because our residents are receiving consistent, unwavering support as is our staff. It is so uplifting, and it makes this difficult situation so much better.” Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com: •

I was at the Batavia Post Office the week of Easter.
Shout-out to the two people that were picking up trash in Centennial Park today. So thoughtful! Thanks for making our city a more beautiful place.
Shout out to all the towns for distributing free face masks on May 9th. It did me proud seeing our Rotary, Town Supervisor and volunteers distributing the masks. Made me proud to be a Penfield Resident!
How low can someone go by stealing a bronze veteran flag holder from my father’s grave at a local cemetery? He was a WWII Veteran! I went out today for groceries, and I saw one person who did not wear a mask, and I wanted to say something but refrained from doing so. Don’t people understand English? She went outside, and what appeared to be her boyfriend, along with two young children were also outside. The guy wore no mask; neither did one of the children. One child did have a mask on. It’s obvious that some people just GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I had two boxes to mail out. The post office clerk said one package was going to cost me $28 to mail. I told the clerk I cannot afford it. Out from the line of people waiting, a beautiful young girl said, “I will pay for that.” I am 78 years old and so surprised that a stranger would do this for me. The clerk rechecked the package weight, and it only came to $10 plus change. So, this girl, who worked at Wendy’s a few doors down, paid for my package. Thank you, young lady. You made my day! Thanks for your kindness to an old lady.
Thank you so much to the two ladies in the red car who brought coffee to the school bus in Clarkson the morning of 5/11. That was so kind! Many
of us volunteer to give out meals to the Brockport families, and this day was especially cold and rainy. The coffee warmed us right up and put a smile on our face. Thank you for your act of kindness during this difficult time!
How refreshing to hear that someone has the same sentiments as I do. I enjoyed the post entitled, “Rippled Affect.” Poison is a terrible way to kill a rodent, or anything else for that matter. And yes, it does have a rippling affect. Do not get me wrong; I do not like mice, but when one makes it into my house, we trap them alive and then release them. I have also used natural remedies as well. Mint is something mice do not like. It was a pleasure reading a decent post, by someone who seems very knowledgeable as well, unlike some who post horrible things

The entire staff at the Legacy at Erie Station Road have gone above and beyond in keeping all of us safe. They are taking excellent precautions during the pandemic to keep everyone safe both physically and mentally. Communication with the staff has been excellent, especially the weekly email from the director. I went walking on Saturday, May 2, 2020 around noon. There were many people on bikes and walking or running. It was a beautiful day. Many of those people were not wearing masks. I know that every person is required to wear a mask now. Please be considerate of your fellow humans and wear your masks. I would like to comment on the person who wrote in about the nosy, old lady parking lot police. I think every place has one or two. I don’t know what they get over trying to make others as miserable as they are. They should just try to mind their own business and get along with people. I think they would be much happier women.

Physical fitness is important. Exercise guidelines depend on the individual, but the American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week. That amount may need to be increased to meet specific goals, such as weight loss. In order to meet their fitness goals, many people invest in home gyms. Home gyms can be a convenient way to maximize physical activity and help people maintain muscle mass. According to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, a Harvard-affiliated medical center, staying fit can improve physical strength, reduce seniors' fear of falls, increase confidence, and improve sleep. When setting up a home gym, people may be tempted to invest a fortune into their equipment. But such investments aren't entirely necessary. Here are some ways to have a functional, budget-friendly workout space in your home. · Invest in elastic resistance bands. Invest in lightweight elasticbands. According to a study published in 2018 in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine, such bands can improve strength just as effectively as many weight machines commonly found in gyms. Resistance bands don't take up much space and can be tucked out of sight when not in use. · Dedicate a workout space. Many people find that areas away from the bustle of the household are great spaces to devote to home gyms. Include a full-length mirror that lets you make sure you're performing exercises correctly and invest in a stereo to pump in inspirational music. The fewer the distractions, the more likely you will commit to your exercise regimen. · Invest in a set of dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells or a few of various weights are a good investment. Dumbbells are compact and can be used to perform a variety of strength-training exercises. Begin with light weights and work your way up to reduce your risk of injury. · Try stability balls. Stability balls are used to perform various core exercises, according to Harvard Medical School. The body's core can be strengthened to improve balance, reduce back pain and more. Stability balls also can be used to perform abdominal crunches, squats, hamstring curls, and body bridges. Balls also can double as a bench when working with dumbbells. · Don't forget about cardio. Elliptical machines, stationary bikes and treadmills are effective, but there are other ways to get your daily dose of cardiovascular exercise. Lateral shuffles between two points on a gym floor, or setting up a circuit of jumping jacks or skipping rope can keep your heart rate up and improve health. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Life might be slowly getting back to normal, but a number of things we anticipated won’t be happening now. The expired prescription-drug drop off: Once a year in my area, the drug store turns its parking lot over to an organization that collects and destroys old drugs. Not this year; it’s already been canceled. A thought: Some local police departments have a collection bin in their facility, usually in the lobby. Call to inquire if your police department has one, or if they’re planning a drug event of their own. The shredding events: Twice a year the bank and the senior center hire a company to bring in their shredding truck and accept all paper items to be shredded: old tax records, bills, documents with personal information on them. This is a very valuable service, and unfortunately, around here those have been canceled. One way to get around this is to have your own shredder. They can be ordered online, typically for less than $40. Learn the difference between strip cut, cross cut and confetti cut. Pictures can be deceptive, so read the specs for the machine. Some will only shred small receipts. Plays and dinners: Once you hear that an event you’d paid for is being canceled, start right away to get your money back. The group might ask that you let them keep your money for their expenses, saying you can claim it as a donation on your taxes. You might consider it, but don’t assume you can get a credit for the same event next year. Better to get your money in hand now. There are so many other events -- senior games and fitness clinics, summer banquet and dance, the legal help event, monthly tech help -- all likely canceled for the foreseeable future. Tip: Call the organization anyway. They might have found a way to safely hold their events.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

He Can’t Find Relief for Itchy Ear Canal --DEAR DR. ROACH: I just turned 68. For the past couple of months, my ear canals have been very itchy. Also, my wife was constantly cleaning earwax out of my ears. Now for some reason I no longer produce earwax, but my ears itch a lot. Do you have any idea what may be causing this? How do I stop the itching? I have tried olive oil. It seems to work but not really that well. A doctor looked in my ear and said the ear canals look fine. -- R.K. ANSWER: Itching in the ear canals is common, but usually an exam is able to lead the examiner to at least suspect a diagnosis. An incipient ear infection is one common reason, but your issue has been going on for months. Skin conditions that itch, such as eczema, is another common one. The doctor might have seen this, but sometimes the findings are subtle. Just having dry skin is a common cause, especially in winter, and olive oil is one treatment, but if it isn’t working it’s time to stop. I often see people make their problem worse by using inappropriate therapies, especially peroxide, and also by putting objects in the ear to scratch it. This can lead to abrasions, lacerations and worse that I won’t horrify you with. I would get the ear looked at again, and if there still is nothing to see, one treatment is a mild prescription steroid drop for a period of time. Your regular doctor or an ear/nose/throat specialist would be a good choice. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Are net carbs really a thing? I understand low impact on blood sugar, but not measuring net carbs. -- H.C. ANSWER: The “net carbs” number is normally calculated by taking the grams of total carbohydrates and subtracting the grams of fiber and sugar alcohols. It’s an attempt to look at the effect on blood sugar, and it has modest informational benefit. It can be misleading, because some sugar alcohols (ending in “-ol,” like maltitol and xylitol) do increase blood sugar somewhat, though not as much as sugars (which end in “-ose,” like glucose and sucrose). I don’t recommend using the term “net carbs.” I think it’s more important to look at ingredients. Avoid large amounts of added sugar and processed starches. Make sure the carbohydrates you take in come mostly from vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains. These are the foundations of a healthy diet, and you don’t need to count numbers. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed with kidney disease and was advised to drink eight glasses of water daily. I can only get down three glasses. Is it OK to drink tea instead? Would vitamins help? -- E.K. ANSWER: From the standpoint of your kidneys, tea and coffee count as water. Having adequate fluid intake is important for your kidneys, but most people who aren’t exercising or living in hot or dry environments don’t need eight full glasses a day. Vitamins are not necessary for kidney health; however, people with very advanced kidney disease often need a special form of vitamin D called calcitriol. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED • Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.

• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
