DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS
When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs.
Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
How to train an excited, reactive dog
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 1-year-old puppy, “Shellie,” gets very excited when she sees another dog approaching. Because she’s already 26 pounds, I’m worried that she’ll soon break away from me while on walks. What can I do? -- Glen H., Plattsburgh, New York
DEAR GLEN: Keeping control of your dog on the leash is such an important skill -- and there is a way to achieve that with Shellie.
First, work on curbing overall reactivity. Does Shellie get really excited when the leash appears? Does she practically drag you out the door for walks? Get control of that first:
-- Bring out the leash, but don’t put it on Shellie right away. Wait until she’s calm, then attach the leash.
-- Next, walk away from the door. Lead Shellie around the house. She’ll be pretty confused, and that’s fine.
-- Stand at the door and have her sit. Open the door slightly, then close it. Repeat. Repeat again until Shellie is staring at you like, “are you nuts?”
Simply Perfect WEDDING
INVITATIONS
Created just for your big day, we've put together sets of stunning wedding invitations to perfectly match your style.
www.printingbypennylane.com ginad@pennylaneprinting.com
-- Now, exit the house, but only if Shellie stays by your side or slightly behind you. If she tries to rush out, repeat the door exercise.
Now, let’s address that reactivity on walks. Here are a few tips that can help:
-- A sturdy, short leash is essential to maintaining control.
-- Train Shellie to walk at your side with a little slack in the leash.
-- Work on core commands when no other dogs are around: Come, Sit, Stay, Heel.
-- Place yourself between Shellie and an approaching dog. Move her to your other side and keep her slightly behind you. You’re her protector right now.
-- Avoid practicing “meet and greets” with other dogs until Shellie is no longer reactive on sight.
ese training methods are just a start, but they’ll put you both on the right track. Most importantly, be consistent with training and daily walks.

DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES
Undereye circles and swelling can be alleviated when people get to the source of the problem. A combination of treating the sources and masking the issue can help. In severe cases, individuals should visit their dermatologists.
HOW ALCOHOL AFFECTS ORAL HEALTH
The acids found in alcohol and the sugars in many mixers can damage your teeth. Drinking alcohol also causes additional health problems that create higher risk for oral health issues. Regular drinkers are at higher risk for tooth decay and loss, while heavy drinkers are three times as likely to have permanent tooth loss. Alcohol causes dehydration and dry mouth, which reduces the salvia that helps wash away food and bacteria. Dry mouth causes more plaque, tartar, and tooth decay. Heavy alcohol consumption weakens the immune system, making it harder to fight infections like gingivitis (gum disease) and periodontitis (advanced/ chronic gum disease). Periodontal disease is one of the most common oral health effects of regular, longterm alcohol consumption.
We are strong believers in the importance of education and
preventive care as key components to optimal dental health as well as overall health. That’s why we are focused on a healthy smile as well as a healthy body for all our patients. To achieve these goals, we conduct thorough exams, review medical histories, and provide instruction on proper home care techniques. If you are as concerned as we are about healthy teeth and gums and a healthier you, call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL today for an appointment for comprehensive dental care. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, you can reach us at 585.343.4246.
P.S. Both gum disease and heavy alcohol consumption are linked to heart disease, mouth cancer, and strokes.

Low Iron Levels Might Affect Blood Donor’s Depression
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am wondering if there is any link between low iron and depression/anxiety. I am a 37-yearold woman, and I started taking Lexapro a few years ago. I upped my dose last year because I wasn’t feeling great, and my doctor and I decided that it was a good step to take. During the years that I have been taking Lexapro, I have also been a regular blood donor. I am CMV-negative, so I have blood suitable for newborns. The Red Cross says I am a “hero for babies,” and I enjoy doing something good. I haven’t donated in about five months, and I am feeling significantly better regarding my depression. I know that donating blood affects iron levels, but does it also affect the concentration of Lexapro in my body? If not, can low iron be contributing to my depression? I would love to know the answer so that I can possibly continue to donate, perhaps less frequently. -- J.M.
ANSWER: First, thank you for donating so regularly. CMV is a virus most people have been exposed to, and like most herpes viruses, it stays in the body forever. Newborns and premature babies, as well as organ transplant recipients, need CMV-negative blood, and there aren’t many CMVnegative people who can donate.
Depression and anxiety are both tightly linked to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Lexapro doesn’t increase serotonin, but it does make the transmission of serotonin from one nerve cell to another more effective by reducing the reuptake of serotonin at the nerve junction. Low iron levels have been shown to reduce serotonin levels, so this may be part of the reason why your depressive symptoms have been worse.
However, there are many other reasons, both inside and outside of your body, that can make depressive symptoms worse. Still, if you do have low iron levels, you can replace iron faster and keep it normal, despite blood donation and menstruation, with an iron supplement. (It would be best to check with your doctor on this.) If your depression gets better, then this would be pretty good evidence that low iron does affect your mood. (Note: You can have low iron and not have anemia at all.)
Find the right donation frequency so you can still help without putting your mental health in danger.

DID YOU KNOW?
When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

Here’s A Tip
* From charcoal grilling expert Kingsford, here's a great tip to use when grilling chicken: "When applying a dry rub to chicken pieces, it's o en hard to keep the rub affixed and it's even more difficult to keep the chicken's original, golden color. Try painting chicken pieces with yellow mustard prior to applying the rub. Not only will the rub stay in place, your final product will be visually appealing -- without any trace of mustard flavor."
* When wrapping vegetables in foil packets to grill, make the seams on the sides. is way, the veggie packets can be turned over for even cooking and to avoid burning on one side. You can even label the outside of the foil in permanent marker. It won't affect the taste of the food.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

DID YOU KNOW?
Oxygen is essential for the roots of grass to breathe and grow strong enough to support healthy lawns. But according to the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, compacted soil can produce a decrease in oxygen content that can make it hard for roots to thrive. Soil compaction can result from a number of activities, including walking on grass or driving or parking vehicles on grass. When soil is compacted, it breaks into small particles that reduce the amount of pore space in the soil. That makes it hard for water, oxygen and nutrients to get through, threatening the strength of the roots and putting the grass in jeopardy. Aerating a lawn can help homeowners foster strong root growth and healthy grass. When to aerate may be contingent upon local climate, so homeowners who suspect the soil in their yards is compact should consult with a local landscaping professional to determine the best time to aerate their lawns.
Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

Provide outdoor atmosphere: Create a bespoke bistro vibe by using freestanding planters and posts along with hanging lights to make an intimate outdoor hangout spot at night. For those with permanent structures, like a deck or a gazebo, lights can be strung across the area or on railings or edging.
A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills.
A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps.
Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney.
Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

Abygale (Aby) Fernaays, a 4th grader at Pavilion’s Dorothy B. Bunce Elementary School, has been named 2024 Poppy Girl through the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 576 in LeRoy. Aby’s family honors Memorial Day every year, she says, “by remembering the sacrifices of the men and women who have given their lives for our country.”
e American Legion Auxiliary adopted the poppy as its memorial flower in 1921 and started the national Poppy Program in 1924 to prevent commercialization of the flower. Volunteers distribute millions of handmade poppies annually, raising funds for active-duty military, disabled veterans, and their families.
e tradition began with Canadian medical officer, Lt. Col. John McCrae’s WWI poem, “In Flanders Fields,” published in 1915, that immortalized the poppy as a symbol of remembrance:
In Flanders Fields
By John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row, at mark our place; and in the sky e larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw e torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
In 1918 when Moina Michael, a Georgia teacher, read the poem in a Ladies Home Journal while at a YMCA conference, she was stuck by the final stanza, and she was so moved that she responded with her own poem:
We Shall Keep the Faith
By Moina Michael
Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields, Sleep sweet - to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw And holding high, we keep the Faith With All who died.
We cherish, too, the poppy red at grows on fields where valor led; It seems to signal to the skies at blood of heroes never dies, But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.
And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught; We’ll teach the lesson that ye wrought In Flanders Fields.
Michael bought poppies to wear and to distribute widely. us began the tradition of poppy distribution to remember war veterans.
According to Deborah Feneran, American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Chairperson, Michael’s tireless efforts on behalf of disabled service members earned her the “Poppy Lady” title, and Michael exemplified the Auxiliary’s motto of “Service Not Self.’”
e LeRoy American Legion Auxiliary Unit was organized in 1922, with the first Poppy Chairperson named in 1928. e Auxiliary nominates a 2nd-4th grade Poppy Girl each year to help distribute poppies especially over Memorial Day weekend. is year, Aby becomes a junior member of the Auxiliary, participating in the parade, and o en placing flags near the monument in LeRoy’s Trigon Park in memory of veterans who passed the previous year.
Feneran says, “ is is always a successful campaign, and we are able to do so many wonderful projects to support our veterans.” Poppy funds support active duty, disabled, and hospitalized veterans and veterans in nursing homes. Easter and Valentine baskets, Christmas gi s, and gi cards go to veterans in need and their families. e poppy program supports the VA medical center with equipment such as wheelchairs and walkers, offers meals to veterans throughout the year, and supplies Christmas wreaths for local veterans’ graves at the Western New York National Cemetery in Pembroke. Funds also support the LeRoy American Legion #576 Honor Guard, who give the area’s fallen heroes Final Honors at funerals, with rifle volleys, Taps, folding/presenting of the American flag and the spent shell casings that represent Duty, Honor, and Country.

Road Test
Save-a-lot, Give-a-lot
Instructors, please be nice to parents and children. Learning to drive, teaching your child to drive, and taking a road test are all stressful enough. Please be kind and courteous. Greet people with a hello and leave them with a goodbye or to have a nice day. It will go a long way for a moment that both new drivers and parents will remember for a long time. If you are having a bad day don’t pass it on to the community members you are serving. It is not an easy job, I am sure, and maybe it is not where you want to be. However, while you’re there, be nice. - Parents
Imagine my delight when the manager at Save-a-lot in LeRoy walked up to me and said: “The gentleman out at the propane bought you a plant, here’s the receipt”! By the time I got up there he was gone. Your wonderful gesture mad not only my day, but I had my 3 little granddaughters with me who talked all the way home about what a wonderful world we live in that people would do that to surprise someone they don’t even know! There are 4 people who will look at that beautiful plant all summer and smile at life’s surprises. Thank you!
Awesome Service
District Budget Notice
I want to thank the entire Staff of Upstate Bottle Return in Henrietta. The Staff is friendly, polite and go out of their way to help customers; the store is clean and the staff always makes me feel welcome. Thank you, Upstate.
Stunning Local Scenery
I love springtime when all the flowers start to bloom and the street comes alive. I know I can’t be the only one who gets a smile to my face.
Got our District Budget Notice. I have to ask, why do we need more NEW school buses time after time? Students graduate, new students begin Elementary school. Does the overall student population change that much to justify more buses? Or are buses that are 3 or 4 years old undrivable and unsafe? We have mechanics at most schools to maintain them. I have to drive my car into the ground because I can’t afford a new one every couple years. Then budgeted new Chromebooks. Are students keeping them after graduation? Are the schools reusing what they already have? I don’t see any statistics showing how many NEW students the budget increased for. Feel free to enlighten me if I’m wrong. Please make it simple so I can understand the facts without being manipulated by long, drawn out verbiage meant to confuse and hide real numbers.

Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals,bridalgrowns,jewelry,and/orgifts.Couplesshouldspeakwiththeir wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.
