Are Irresponsible Owners the Bane of Dog Parks?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When I first adopted my Collie mix “Sara,” I went to the dog park near my apartment every morning. I thought it would be a great place for a year-old puppy to socialize with other dogs and humans. A year later, I no longer take her to the dog park if there are any other dogs there -- which means taking pre-dawn walks or bypassing the park entirely. I quickly learned that while many dog owners are responsible people who train and socialize their dogs, others don’t train them at all, or train them inadequately. On Sara’s first day, a huge dog ran up, snarling and barking at both of us. The dog’s owner just sat on a bench, waving and yelling, “He’s friendly,” while Sara cowered behind my legs. A few days later, that same dog got in a vicious fight with two other dogs. Because we continued to have negative experiences with other dogs (and their owners), making it impossible to train and socialize Sara, I’ve stopped going there. I don’t think dog parks are a great idea anymore, even though I live in an urban area and green spaces are important for dogs. What’s your take? -- Hannah J. in Boston DEAR HANNAH: I’m really sorry that happened to Sara and you, and you’re doing the right thing by taking her at uncrowded times. Overcrowded parks, resource-guarding and aggressively playful dogs can make it a negative experience. Dog parks are a community resource, and it’s important for dog owners to work together to make the park work. Find out if there’s a volunteer committee for your particular park. If not, and you want to keep using the dog park, consider forming a group to address behavior and other issues. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Shop Smart for Mother’s Day Check expiration dates. Gift certificates and cards for particular stores or services are popular come Mother’s Day. But it is essential to check expiration dates on the certificates or find gifts, as there is a good chance Mom will put off pampering herself and you would not want the gift to expire before she has a chance to use it.

OPEN FOR THE SEASON! UNIQUE MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IDEAS Dining out can be a treat. A meal at a favorite restaurant can be a welcome change from kitchen duty. Mother’s Day is a busy day for restaurants, many of which have limited menus to better handle the crowds. As a result, if dining out on Mother’s Day, Mom may not get the full menu she desires. To ensure mothers have full menus at their disposal, gift givers can cook a meal at home on Mother’s Day and then choose another day of the week to enjoy a meal in an upscale restaurant.

GET BACK TO LOVING YOUR DIGITAL LIFE AFTER A HACK (NAPSI)—Learning you’ve been hacked can be a bummer. Luckily, Allstate believes your online information is just as important as your home or car. To help you learn more about managing your digital footprint, visit www.HiddenWorldOfData.com, which is a hub of educational resources. You can learn more about where your data goes and how to better manage your data privacy and prevent any negative missteps. So whether you’ve been hacked or just want to take the right steps to prevent it from happening, Allstate has your back.

MOM LOVES PIZZA. MOM DISLIKES DISHES. Make it easy this Sunday and order pizza and wings!

1. Don’t panic! Protecting your personal online data is equally important as your car or home. Having a plan in case you’re hacked can help limit what a thief might do with your information and potentially alleviate damage.

Unique gifts ideas for Mother’s Day Theater tickets: If Mom is a fan of live theater then nothing will elicit a bigger smile than tickets to a Broadway show she has had her eyes on. If Broadway is a bit too far for you to travel, do your homework and find a traveling production of a former Broadway show. Such productions often feature many of the same actors who made the play famous on Broadway so you’re still bound to see an unforgettable show Mom will love.

2. Say something. If you fear your banking information may be compromised, call and change your mobile banking passwords. While things are settling, unlink your bank account and card information from places like Venmo and PayPal. If your Social Security number is involved, contact the fraud department at any of the three creditreporting agencies and check credit reports for any suspicious activity. Lastly, let close contacts know you were hacked so they can avoid clicking on links that might come from you and not fall victim to something similar. 3. Be unique. Reality check: Life would be easier if we only needed to remember one password. But using the same password for multiple accounts can put you at greater risk of having information stolen. Defend your accounts with strong passwords (use upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters—go crazy!) and ensure each password you have is unique to that program or app. A great password manager can take the stress out of remembering a million different passwords! 4. Ask yourself how. It’s hard to understand why you were targeted but once you understand how hackers gain control of accounts and get personal information, you’ll get why Allstate wants you to prioritize protecting your digital footprint. Here are some actions that can potentially put your data at risk: • Password reuse • Downloading malware • Using public Wi-Fi

71 Main St, Brockport, NY

585.637.9150

• Phishing scams. 5. Protect your phone with more than just a case. Cell phones are crazy convenient—but they also store a lot of highly sensitive information, becoming a prime target for hackers. It’s beneficial to take the time to add a passcode and touch ID to your phone. Keep your phone and apps updated to account for security upgrades from developers, and give only trusted apps access to your location, calendar, photos, etc. 6. Learn savvy security measures. Good news—there’s so much you can do to help secure your digital footprint from fraudsters! • Add two-factor authentication. • Review your login activity for your e-mail service. • Use a password manager. • Make sure your phone has a passcode or set up touch ID. • Review which permissions you give each app. For example, do your social media apps need your location? Be sure to check out Allstate’s www.hiddenworldofdata.com to learn more about your digital footprint and how to keep information secure.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Shop at small businesses regularly.

* Kitchen remodels can be expensive, but when your kitchen isn’t usable, that’s even more of an expense. Instead of opting for takeout food, set up an alternate kitchen to save money. A microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot and a small dorm-style fridge can take care of a lot of your needs in the short term. * Planning on putting in some new plants or sprucing up your garden this spring? Check with your town’s yard-waste recycling center about free mulch or compost. Many facilities offer these to their residents. ●

* Earth Day got me thinking about how many plastic bottled beverages my family goes through. I have found six glass reusable bottles that can be run through the dishwasher, and I store them in the refrigerator in a cardboard six-pack holder. I still want the convenience of grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, but I feel better knowing that I’m not contributing to a plastic problem.” -- JoAnn

Thank you! - Anna Animal Hospital Praises A huge thanks goes out to Dr. Chris and Megan! Our furry friend slipped a disk in his back late in the afternoon on April 4th. We called York Animal Hospital, and Dr. Chris was leaving within the hour. She was in the emergency care units and told us to get there ASAP. When we arrived, Dr. Chris and Megan were waiting for us. We are now in the third week, and our furry friend is improving every day, taking two steps on April 22nd. A huge thank you to Dr. Chris and Megan, and of course, to the rest of the staff for our regular weekly visits. Recycling It's pretty sad when you call [local town] Code Enforcement, [local town] Hall, and [others] to find a solution to businesses not recycling, and you pretty much get an answer of "Oh well." No one seems to know or care. So as all these cans, glass, and junk get thrown onto the ground, remember, you have children and grandchildren who have to live on this dirty earth. Why can't people just do the right thing?

Enough already! Am I the only one who’s sick of businesses, companies, services, and retailers overusing the excuse of COVID? Most of these are still trying to increase profits even though supply, laborers, and inflation are affecting all of us. Some still allow personnel to work from home which leaves fewer people to actually provide services to customers. Eliminate the government “freebies” to force people to actually work for their money. Stop giving free money to renters and get them back to work. Quit stealing from the taxpayers and get us back to where we were. The COVID excuse being made is just that: an excuse! Not a Drag Strip! Moving to this beautiful town over 10 years ago was the best decision my family could have made. It’s such a beautiful town with friendly neighbors. However, we couldn’t be more upset with the way most of the younger generations use [local street] in [local town] as a “drag strip." Living on this street is absolutely beautiful, and the 30 miles a hour limit should be enforced. There are many that hit the stop sign on center and then use the straight away as if it’s 390 in a 65mph zone. It’s 30mph or slower. Please slow down. There are autistic children that live in this area as well as family pets. Let’s be safe and slow down. Tomorrows are never guaranteed. We would hate to see something happen to children, walkers, runners, family pets, etc. Slow it down, please!

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 10, 1869, the presidents of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads meet in Promontory, Utah, and drive a ceremonial last spike into a rail line that connects their railroads. This made transcontinental railroad travel possible for the first time in U.S. history. HOW COMMUNITIES CAN RECOGNIZE NURSES Celebrate holidays that honor nurses as a community. The American Nurses Association notes that National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12. Though National Nurses Week is not a federal holiday, communities can still come together during the week to highlight the work their local nurses do. Township or other local officials can encourage businesses in the community to offer special discounts to nurses during the week, while schools can take part in collective efforts to thank nurses. For example, students from all grades can work on a banner thanking nurses and then showcase the banner by the entryway to campus so passing motorists can see it.

We would like to thank all essential works including medical personnel and first responders. We would also like to give a special thank you to our very own Mackenzie Geissler. 4060 Pearl St. Rd., Batavia PellegrinoAutoSales.com

344-2658 BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the 18th century, Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin were both defeated at chess by a machine called the Mechanical Turk -- or at least they thought they were. It was later revealed to be quite the elaborate hoax, with a highly skilled chess master hiding inside the “machine” and moving the pieces against the opponent. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Cause of Chronic Cough Has Doctors Stumped

Serving Our Community for over 20 years. Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Accepting New Patients.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I picked up a cough while traveling in Europe more than two years ago. No other symptoms have ever presented. Since that time, I have received every test imaginable, including spirometry, multiple breathing tests, CT scans, X-rays and most recently a bronchoscopy. Nothing was discovered through any of these tests. Other than the cough, I am very healthy. The cough is driving me crazy, however. I have been prescribed every type of medication, and nothing helps. My doctors are at a standstill and have nothing further to offer. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know I can’t live my life with this cough. I avoid a lot of personal interaction because it is so disruptive to constantly be coughing. I would greatly appreciate your help with this, and any advice regarding what steps need to be taken next. -- P.M. ANSWER: Chronic cough (lasting more than several months) is most frequently a result of acid reflux, asthma or postnasal drip, although there are many more causes, including infection, which would be a concern given that you have a clear idea of when it started. Despite an extensive evaluation for cough, it is not that uncommon that people are left with no explanation but with a persistent cough. There are other, less-common treatments at this point, some of which your doctors might not have tried. The first is the medication gabapentin (Neurontin). This is used for a condition called laryngeal neuropathy, and I have had a few spectacular cases where the cough disappears entirely. People have written saying that their doctor prescribed the medication for them after reading it in the column and they also had relief, even after decades of persistent coughing, so I think this condition may be more common than I have ever thought. A second has been a cough suppressant. I am very cautious about using opiate drugs, and it is certainly not appropriate for some people, but cautious use of tramadol in selected patients has been successful in reducing, but not eliminating, cough. Just yesterday in the clinic, one of the residents I supervise had a patient with chronic cough who had dramatic improvement through the use of speech therapy. Looking it up today, I find trials showing significant improvement, if modest, with this approach, as well as several ongoing trials. Given the potential side effects of gabapentin and tramadol, I think I will be making more referrals to my speech and language pathology colleagues, and suggest you speak with your doctors about some of these options. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

CROWNS: NOT JUST FOR ROYALS Dental crowns, caps made of porcelain or porcelain fused to metal, are used in dentistry to correct irregularly shaped, chipped, or cracked teeth, provide reinforcement following a root canal, or replace missing or failing teeth. Crowns are customized to fit the patient’s tooth and tinted to match the color of other teeth. Requiring two appointments, crowns are permanently affixed to the tooth. Impressions of the teeth are first taken to ensure an exact fit, then the impression molds are sent to a dental lab to create the crown. A patient returns for final crown placement and permanent bonding to the existing tooth. Visiting a dental health professional can determine if a crown is the best possible solution for tooth restoration.

Crowns are one of the many options available today to change the look of your teeth. Don’t hide your smile behind a lack of information. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we want our patients to be comfortable not only with the function of their teeth, but also with the appearance of their smile, and a consultation at our office is an excellent opportunity to discover your dental alternatives. New patients are always welcome here at 6 Batavia City Centre. For an appointment, please call us at 585.343.4246. We’ll give you a reason to smile! P.S. Dr. Charles Land introduced the all-porcelain jacket crown in 1903. It is the first rendition of the dental crown used today.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles What Lured Us Back to the Senior Center? The too-young staffers at the senior center finally figured out that we’re not coming back until COVID is gone. And it’s not gone. In some areas it’s easing up a bit, but here it’s still going strong. We’re not willing to risk contagion by dashing in the door of the senior center and pretending things are back to normal. At least once a week the center sends out emails and gets few replies in response. Come to the Ladies Lunch served indoors? No thanks. Experiment with still life photography in the meeting room, with vases, statuettes and fruit provided? No. We held out, refusing as a group to be party to any potential COVID-spreading indoor activity. Finally, the staff got it. They went with videos. The art classes will be online. The book club will have an online discussion, with a link to how to log in to the meeting. And the exercise classes will be posted online so everyone can stretch and work out at home. But it was the offer of free haircuts that broke our resolve. Some of us haven’t been in a salon for two years. The rules were specific. Stay in our car until we were handed an at-home COVID test, which we would take in the car. If it proved to be negative, we could proceed to the next step (one person at a time), which was to sit on a chair in the hall inside the right-side door of the center and wait for our turn. When the person ahead of us was finished (down the hall in the kitchen), she would be escorted out the left-side door to the parking lot. It was glorious. We each came out of the left-side door with a spring in our step, freshly relieved of two years of unruly hair. Staff should have thought of this before.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all. While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.” Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

Reduce energy costs and improve the safety of your home through energy efficiency measures in owned or rented property.

My Mother’s hands, so thin and work-worn, Were loved by me as jewels, rare, For they had rocked me in my cradle, And, lovingly, they’d stroked my hair. They worked for me, both night and morning; They helped to smooth away my fears, For never were these dear hands idle; I think of them with love and tears! My Mother’s hands to me were precious: I thought their beauty was sublime; I felt no harm on earth could touch me If they were near me all the time! ~Gertrude Tooley Buckingham, “My Mother’s Hands” (1940s)

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day an official holiday in 1914. After he was persuaded by Anna Jarvis, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared that the second Sunday of every May would be Mother’s Day. In his first Mother’s Day proclamation, Wilson stated that the holiday offered a chance to “[publicly express] our love and reverence for the mothers of our country,” according to History.com. Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Happy Mother’s Day! 9 Global Traditions Inspire Us as We Celebrate Mom BY MAKAYLA HOLLIMAN & ELIJAH ROBINSON

I

t’s that time again! Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to make the mothers in your life feel special, loved, and respected—especially our own mothers who loved us first and continue to love us with unwavering faith. Mother’s Day D is a big event in the United States, but did you know many countries around the world also set aside a special time to celebrate mothers? We gathered fun and unique Mother’s Day traditions from nine countries around the globe, and we hope you find something new to add to your Mother’s Day celebrations!

France

Mother’s Day, “Fête des Mères,” occurs on the last Sunday of May or the first Sunday of June. Fête des Mères originated during the Napoleonic era during which families with a large number of children were presented with medals as part of an effort to promote large families and curb low birth rates. Some parts of France still honor this tradition and present moms with medals on Mother’s Day, known as Médaille de la Famille. It is customary to make a bouquet cake for mom, followed by a family dinner. Children typically give flowers, jewelry, perfumes, handmade gifts, handwritten poems, and chocolates as presents.

Germany

Mother’s Day, celebrated on the second Sunday of May, is known as Muttertag and was first celebrated in 1922. Here, celebrating mothers extends further than the women of the house; it pays tribute to the mothers of the universe. Carried out with a high degree of pomp and circumstance, this day sees children give their moms gifts and cards, red carnations celebrating mothers who are alive, and white carnations honoring mothers who have passed away. Surprises are common, and travel tickets are a traditional present. The family also makes a homemade dinner to give mom a break.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia holds its celebration of mothers in the early fall and hosts festivals that honor its religion. Ethiopia holds a festival called “Antrosht” which is dedicated only to moms. Families come together for large meals and celebrations. Daughters bring vegetables and cheese while sons bring meat, prepare meat hash, and stage performances featuring their family heroes.

India

Like Ethiopia, India also holds its celebration of mothers in the early fall and hosts festivals that honor its religion. In India, this celebration lasts for 10 days. Hindus honor Durga, the goddess of mothers, at the Durga Puja festival. This religious ceremony hosts family reunions centered around the traditional story of how Durga returns to her parents to show her own children off to them. The festivities continue with making food, giving gifts and decorating homes.

Italy

In Italy, mothers are honored on “La Festa della Mamma,” observed the second Sunday of May. The mother is regarded as the most important person in the family, and children must call if they cannot come home that day. While she is honored year-round, on this day, she is pampered from dawn to dusk. Small presents, roses, and handwritten poetry are popular gifts, while cards are not commonly given. Lunch is eaten out to give moms a break, and

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

at the end of the day, mothers receive a heart-shaped cake made for them by their children.

Japan

Japan’s customs for Mother’s Day are entirely different. Here, the holiday was revived after World War II and was used to console mothers who had lost children during the war. Today, Mother’s Day is observed on the second Sunday of May with red or pink carnations as well as help with chores and cooking. Japanese families make traditional Tamagoyaki or Chawanmushi dishes, while children make handmade gifts or portraits for their mothers.

Mexico

In Mexico, Mother’s Day—“La Dia de la Madre”—is celebrated on May 10th. Each year, women are celebrated with mariachi serenades, special mass services, and children’s performances. They are also treated out to lunches and dinners. No matter what day May 10th falls on, Mexican families always make time to celebrate their mothers.

Peru

One of Peru’s most important events, Mother’s Day, is celebrated for an entire week with much anticipation leading up to the second Sunday of May. This celebration honors not only mothers, but all the women in the home. Families organize lunches, dinners, parties and trips throughout the week, and children prepare events and festivities. Mothers are given the opportunity to visit exhibits, museums, and festivals for free. They are also read poetry and stories, given gifts, flowers, and treats, served dinner, and entertained by their children. Peruvian families also visit cemeteries to honor their dearly departed mothers and grandmothers, bringing flowers, balloons, and other salutations for the graves. No mother is forgotten in this showing of appreciation for a mother’s love and sacrifice.

United Kingdom

British families hold Mother’s Day, referred to as Mothering Sunday, on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Dating back to the 1600s, England was the first country in the world to create a holiday specifically for celebrating mothers. Shifting away from its historic roots as a day of showing respect to one’s “mother church,” Mothering Sunday increasingly centered around celebrating moms across Britain. Flowers are the most popular gifts, and the most common types of flowers children give their mothers are roses, carnations, and chrysanthemums. It is also traditional to give mum a rich almond cake called ‘Mothering Cake’ or ‘Simnel Cake.’

TEMPORARY PROGRAM TECHNICIAN DID YOU KNOW?

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.
