* “Baking soda can have a whitening effect on some fabrics and is a good alternative for items that might be sensitive to the harshness of bleach in the washing machine. It’s fantastic for musty items as well. Add a cup of baking soda to a load of towels, then add a cup of vinegar to the rinse water.” -- T.H. in Kansas * Periodically take down curtains and run them through the clothes dryer to dust. If they are not delicate, you can add a couple wool dryer balls to help loosen the dust. Rehang as soon as they are finished to avoid unsightly wrinkles. * “Drop a small item in a hard to reach place? Slip a sock over the end of a vacuum hose attachment and hold to secure. Turn on the vacuum and “suck up” the small item. The suction will hold it in place, but it will not go into the vacuum. Rather, it will be held captive in the sock, which you can simply slip off for retrieval.” -- A.F. in New York

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My toddlers will not stop tormenting our pets! They chase the cat and pull his tail; they dive-bomb the dog and scare her every time she lays down for a nap. I’m tired of chasing after them and trying to stop them. What else can I do? Lock the pets in another room? -– Susanna Y., Ogden, Utah DEAR SUSANNA: Let me ask you this: Why should the pets be punished every time your toddlers misbehave? Your dog should be able to nap peacefully in her own doggie bed, and the cat should be able to sit quietly at the window. That’s the ideal, anyway. I know it’s difficult, especially since all of us are cooped up right now. But, consider that toddlers tend to react just as well to a punishment/reward system as most dogs (and some cats) do, if not more so. Make it clear that your kids are not to torment the pets -- and that if they do, there will be consequences. As to the consequences: What are their favorite things to do? Play with specific toys? Watch certain Netflix Kids cartoons? Eat candy? They may be very young, but threatening to (temporarily) remove one of their favorite activities or snacks can be effective. And of course, there’s always the tried-and-true time out. I wish I had more advice to give you. Chasing around toddlers is truly exhausting. Just try to be firm and make it clear that it’s wrong for them to torment the pets. We’ll all be able to get out of the house soon. ike many businesses during this COVID-19 pandemic, Red Osier Landmark Restaurant has faced many challenges, including temporarily pausing indoor dining. Fortunately, the restaurant has been able to remain open for curbside service. For owners Steve Foster and Tim Adams, staying open meant finding opportunities to give back to the communities that have rallied around them. “We have moved completely to curbside service,” said Foster. “We are offering meals from $10-$30, creating price points for everyone, from those struggling at this time to those who can afford to splurge. With only seven of us working, we are still offering our regular menu every night.” Their efforts have been met with enthusiastic response from local communities. “At first, we had a serious discussion as to whether we were going to shut down or not,” said Foster. “We were concerned people would not come out to Stafford for to-go meals, and we were proven wrong, that’s for sure!” Fridays, in particular, have been very successful. “The community has been absolutely wonderful,” Foster continued. “We typically served 100 fish fry meals in-house. Now, we are serving around 300 to-go! Many of our customers are local. We are very fortunate and feel very blessed.” Foster and Adams immediately knew they had to find ways to give back. “We started on Easter,” recalled Foster. “We wanted to do something for our staff, especially the ones that we don’t have work for right now. So, we put 80 bags of groceries together for all of our staff members - bus people, chef, office manager, everyone - so that they could have an Easter dinner.” Foster and Adams then began giving complementary thank you lunches to local essential workers. “We have done complementary meals for the local gas station, supermarket, our bank, the staff and residents of a local Veterans Home – it is all complementary,” explained Foster. “Yesterday, we brought meals to a local farm. Since we took over ownership of the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant, one of our mottos has been, ‘Don’t forget about your community, or your community will forget about you.’ These are the kind of things we want our communities to remember.” Foster and Adams got the community involved, and their efforts received a name: Thankful Thursdays. Steve Foster delivers tasty Red Osier Landmark They also asked for suggestions of places Restaurant meals to LeRoy Village Green! to do thanks. “We received over 60 suggestions from corporate to local to farms,” they shared. “We put all the names in a bag and picked one; it was the farm.” The results have been incredible. “Every day we are getting thank you letters in the mail,” said Foster and Adams. “It keeps us going and is very meaningful to us. Some local children even brought us cookies and hand sanitizer with a note thanking us for all we are doing. If we didn’t have encouragement like this, I think we would get burned out.” In spite of their fatigue, Foster and Adams choose to find a silver lining. “If there is anything positive about this, it may be that our customers now realize that they can get our meals to go with the exact same quality as if they came and sat in our dining room,” said Adams. Foster agreed, adding, “We just reached our four-year anniversary of owning the restaurant. At first, there was little able to distinguish who we are from who the previous owners were. I think people now put my face and Tim’s face to the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant, differentiating us from the one in Rochester. People are realizing that we are huge community members and very much

a part of this community. This is just distinguishing us from the Rochester one even more.” Adams and Foster look forward to reopening their restaurant. “I can tell you this,” said Foster, “as soon as they give us the green light, these doors will be open faster than anyone can think!” Changes are also underway. “We are planning a grand reopening,” they said. “Four years ago, when we took ownership, there really wasn’t a reopening, but this time we are changing uniforms and remodeling the bar. There are a lot of in-house preparation going on so that when we do reopen, it will be better than ever.”

We have an amazing head chef on board, and we have been working closely with him.” Adams and Foster remind families that although this will be a different kind of summer, particularly for graduating seniors, Red Osier Landmark Restaurant food trucks will be available to cater graduation parties and other events once the restrictions are lifted. Adams and Foster remain optimistic. “We all believe the years to come are going to be the best years for our restaurant.”

Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees.

The inviting fragrance of freesia makes bouquets of these flowers popular choices for Mother’s Day gifts. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The following tips can be an asset as students continue to navigate remote learning. KEEP A SCHEDULE. It’s easy to begin to sleep late and fall out of routine when not required to go to a school building. Families should make scheduling a priority, which can help students stay on top of lessons and complete their assignments on time. ASK QUESTIONS. Everyone is learning as they go, and further clarification may be needed. Students should email or chat with teachers if they don’t understand an assignment or are unsure about instructions. Teachers may be able to clearly model a math problem or explain a concept via video chat for students who need help. EXPLORE EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS. Many companies are offering free educational services while kids are home from school. Scholastic.com is offering online courses, Nat Geo for Kids, Fun Brain, PBS Kids, and Highlight Kids are other places to turn to for activities.

“Have You Ever Smoked?” --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question that I’d love to see answered in your column sometime. My husband recently had major surgery. Before the surgery, they asked if he has ever smoked. (Husband is 77.) He answered that when he was 9, he smoked a cigarette. He is now in the computer as an ex-smoker, and the nurse told us she is “required by law” to provide him with information on quitting. When physicians ask, “Have you ever smoked?” do they really want to hear about one cigarette, smoked almost 70 years ago? Is this meaningful information, in medical terms? -- S.S. ANSWER: There are very important reasons to know a person’s smoking history, especially when someone is about to undergo surgery. Current smokers should know that quitting well before surgery can reduce risks of surgical complications. The anesthesiologist can be extra-vigilant for breathing issues. Some of these points are valid for ex-smokers who have recently quit or who were very heavy smokers. Of course, one cigarette at age 9 is meaningless, and anytime I hear “required by law” I wonder if it’s really true. In this case, I doubt it: Why give ex-smokers information on quitting? It makes no sense. Primary care providers like me ask about smoking because a significant history of smoking increases heart disease risk, so I might be more likely to recommend treatment to reduce that risk (for example, in a person with elevated blood pressure or cholesterol who otherwise doesn’t quite meet criteria for drug treatment). Also, people who smoked more than 1 pack per day for 30 years, or the equivalent, should have a discussion about whether screening for lung cancer is appropriate. Finally, it’s easier to answer if you have never been a smoker. Some people who smoke socially don’t consider themselves smokers but would still benefit from advice to stop. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I took a sleep study and slept on my back all night because I was wired up and couldn’t sleep on my side. After a couple of hours, I was told that I have moderate sleep apnea. I snore when I’m on my back, but not when I’m on my side. Do you think I really have sleep apnea? -- T.M. ANSWER: Obstructive sleep apnea very often goes unrecognized. It is caused by the soft tissue in the neck obstructing the airway; the muscles relax while you are asleep, closing the airway. This is indeed much more likely to happen when lying on the back (we use the anatomical term “supine”), and generations of spouses have learned that turning a snorer on the side is a good way to get him or her to quit snoring. Snoring is caused by the very same process that leads to sleep apnea; in fact, snoring is a significant risk factor, with up to a third of snorers having the condition. I believe the sleep study. While I am sure you would have demonstrated less obstruction if you could sleep on your side, you still are likely to have some obstruction during the night, especially since we frequently change position while sleeping without knowing it. However, there are many different treatments for sleep apnea, and you should talk with your doctor about which is right for you. You need not jump to the most aggressive treatments. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

The MacDonald family have made beautiful masks for our family and many other home school families like us! A big shout out and lots of prayers for them! Let us hope this ends soon! I want to thank my neighbors in the Hillsboro Cove area in Webster. My husband and I take our nightly walk and recently came across the most awesome window decorations. The neon lights & positive message was just what the doctor ordered! What a great idea! You have made us look forward to our walks! I am so grateful for the dedicated work of school employees and am thoroughly satisfied with how my tax dollars have been spent during the building closure.
I agree with the person who wrote how there are those who defiantly disobey and go out and who do not do the social distancing to boot. How about when and if they get the coronavirus, they waive their right to a ventilator so that some other poor soul can have use of it. They put all the first responders and those in the medical profession at risk. Some people would not care about others and just want to do what they want to do, unless it bit them in the you know where. They would be the first one to boohoo if they were to get sick. Too late then! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

That is indeed great advice. I must admit that sometimes I am guilty of picking up items, and then not buying them. I usually must do that to look at the expiration dates on an item. If the date is not good, it has to go back on the shelf, but in the times we are living in, I wholeheartedly agree that we need to be careful about such things, and I will make a conservative effort to think twice before doing so, although I don’t want to buy food that has already expired. I, for one, wonder why more than one person goes out shopping. I go out by myself and do the grocery shopping for my family. At least, I have that right. I also wonder why some have their adult children drop by while the rest of us obey the restrictions. Just want to reiterate in the post of 4-3-20: if you see someone begging for money for food, yes, they are drug addicts. My son was one

Thank you to every school employee, in every district, for providing the outstanding effort and creativity required to make distance learning work. Teachers are providing instruction in a new format, administrators working tirelessly to provide resources, counselors checking in and sharing information, coaches developing workouts, Secretaries getting work to kids and back to teachers, tech departments sharing resources, custodians thoroughly cleaning, food service and transportation getting meals out, and students for continuing to value education. School buildings are closed, but everyone continues to work overtime. Thank you all!
Yet in the midst of it, I have seen much love and kindness being spread around. I want to thank local businesses, community groups, county boards, and individuals who have reached out to essential workers during this time to encourage us. Thank you for the meals, cards, yard signs, gifts, and much more that you have done to support and encourage me and my coworkers. As a healthcare worker, it has been my privilege to serve the families in our communities as I care for their elderly loved ones during this uncertain time. May the Lord bless you all with the peace that passes all understanding, which comes through Jesus Christ. - Anna Kranz, Livonia, NY
These past few weeks have brought our communities concern, anxiety, and hardship. of them and has told us this. The money is for drugs. There are many food kitchens in Rochester. If you feel the need to help, bring them a meal from McDonald’s, buy them a bus pass to get to a food kitchen, give them some warm clothes (even though they might sell them). Never give them money.
not pack them well in those little bins, and on windy days all their recyclable garbage blows all over into the streets and people’s lawns for others to have to clean up . Please be respectable and pack your trash in tightly. With the virus going on, others should not have to pick up your trash. Keep our country clean!
During our daily walks on [local road] in [local town], it’s amazing to see the amount of garbage that is thrown out of vehicles as they drive down our road in and around the area, including cans, bottles, restaurant trash, etc. Someone is throwing empty single shot bottles of whiskey out their car window. Every day, there seems to be a new one the road. Can you please stop throwing your garbage out the car window? Thank you.
I am curious how the writer who was upset that people are still going out, going to markets knows this? The writer even overheard a woman who said she was not staying home. How did you hear this if you are staying home?
Do the recyclables really get recycled? I was informed they do not. Problem with them is people who put their recyclables out do

FAMILY CYCLING IS AN
Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Children won’t be able to put in as many miles as their parents or older

Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy.
siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

SENIOR NEWS LINE
When
By Matilda Charles
Communication becomes difficult… Trouble communicating with others can be a symptom of various disorders. Difficulty conveying words or emotions can be a condition of autism spectrum disorder, but quite frequently it occurs when a neurological injury affects the portion of the brain responsible for language. The National Aphasia Association states that aphasia is an impairment of language that affects the comprehension or the production of speech as well as the ability to read and write. Aphasia results from an injury to the brain, including head trauma, brain tumors, infections, and stroke. The Cleveland Clinic notes a person with aphasia may experience difficulty speaking, writing, reading, and understanding language. Impairments can range from mild to very severe (nearly impossible to communicate). While aphasia may only affect one area of communication, usually limitations occur across many areas. One of the more common symptoms of aphasia is word-finding issues. This can be characterized by challenges remembering the names of people, events or things. Sometimes an individual may not be able to think of the word he or she wants to say. In other instances, that person may say the wrong word entirely, such as using “rope” for the word “ball.” The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association also states that it is common for someone with aphasia to switch sounds in words, like “wishdasher” for “dishwasher.” Often sentences are difficult to come by, and single words may be easier.
Are we bored yet?
Being bored isn’t good, especially for seniors. We need to keep our brain cells active, even if we can’t get out of the house for any mental stimulation due to the coronavirus. And we need to find ways to move each day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes at a time, to keep our muscles strong. Look at YouTube.com for mild in-place exercises for seniors. Go online to find a kids’ basketball hoop and soft ball you can hang over the door. Look for a dartboard with magnetic darts. If you have an old Nintendo Wii console, hook it up and get some exercise with the bowling and tennis. If you have an indoor hobby, call your closest store and ask if they have curbside pickup or can mail supplies to you. Put “online craft tutorials” in your internet browser for new ideas. Tune up your guitar and order new strings. Find your old piano books if you have a piano. To keep your brain stretched, if you get a newspaper, do the puzzles, even the ones you normally don’t try. Go online for other puzzles you can print out or complete online. Go to puzzles.usatoday.com for a wide variety of online games. With the crossword puzzles you can choose your skill level (hints versus no hints). Use your keyboard to type in each letter. Try jigsaw puzzles, spelling games, backgammon (play against an opponent or the computer) or mahjong. Also look at Boatload Puzzles (www.boatloadpuzzles.com) for 40,000 crossword puzzles. For real brain stretchers look to Merriam-Webster (www.merriam-webster. com/word-games) or AARP (games.aarp.org). For short-term memory games, look at BrainCurls.com. Meanwhile, here’s a puzzle for you. What is the next letter in this sequence? O T T F F S S __ The answer will be at the end of my next column.
Trouble communicating also extends to a person with aphasia having challenges understanding what others are saying, particularly when they speak fast or in long sentences. The situation may be exacerbated when it is noisy or a person is in a group setting. Aphasia can affect anyone. However, it is more common in those who are middle-aged and older. The NAA says roughly 180,000 people are diagnosed with aphasia each year. Even though brain injury is a primary cause of aphasia, it also can create other language-related issues, such as weakness in the muscles that control the face or mouth or an inability to move the lips or tongue in the right way to make sounds. People with aphasia can benefit from working with a speech-language pathologist as early as possible. This professional can present many strategies to help manage deficits or potentially return some measure of communication. Augmentative and alternative communication, such as using images or a computer to tell what a person wants, may be options in more severe cases of aphasia. Aphasia affects many people and can rob them of the ability to communicate effectively without intervention. TF206030 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.
My mom is a lifelong smile in my heart, her voice a comfort to my soul, her hugs my ladder to the stars. ~Terri Guillemets
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Irish author and politician Edmund Burke was not a skilled public speaker. In fact, his speeches at the House of Commons were so boring, many MPs left the building once he stood up. * While Jackie Robinson was laid up for two weeks in 1948 with a hamstring injury, the Dodgers secretly replaced him with Herschel Morowitz, a white man in black face. * Drinking seawater will cause rapid dehydration and, if enough is consumed, eventually death. Frozen seawater is a much safer alternative, since it contains only a tenth as much salt as the liquid form, due to the fact that the salt is separated from the water when freezing as it does not fit into the crystalline structure of ice.

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new. ~Rajneesh
HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The Lamb is usually excited about taking on a new challenge. But if that’s a touch of doubt you’re feeling, maybe it’s you telling yourself to go slow on this until you learn more about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Accepting new commitments when you haven’t yet finished the batch on hand could be a bit rash. Better to ease up on the new ones until you get further along with your current lot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some people might be anxious about your plans. So you need to take time to explain what you expect to do and how you expect do it. And don’t forget to ask for suggestions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Dealing with an unfamiliar problem can be difficult. The wisest course you can take is to ask for advice from those who have been where you are and have come through it. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Tackle a frustrating job problem by considering possibilities you might have ignored before. This reassures colleagues you’re serious about finding a solution, even if it’s not totally yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your balanced approach to life proves to be helpful this week when someone you care for needs your spiritual comfort, while someone else benefits from your toughlove practicality. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Once again, you’re likely to be asked to keep a secret for someone. But do you really want to do so? Be honest with yourself and with your needs before you make any such commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking a more direct approach from the more diplomatic one you’ve used before could make a difference in finally resolving a too-long-held disagreement. Try it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Being asked for advice is flattering to the Sea Goat, who has a habit of saying the right thing. This time, expect someone to be especially impressed and to act on that sentiment. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With a number of pressures easing, your project could be making a lot more progress than you expected by this time. That’s great news. But don’t let yourself be distracted; stay with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An interesting challenge looms that could be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Discuss this with colleagues who could have much to contribute and who might want to join with you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your heart is always open to offer loving concern for others. And they, in turn, reach out to complete the circle. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
Accepting new lawn mowing contracts!
Install shower heads that earned the WaterSense label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that showering accounts for nearly 17 percent of home water consumption. For the average family, that translates to almost 1.2 trillion gallons of water each year. Shower heads that have earned the EPA’s WaterSense label have met various conservation criteria established by the EPA. Such shower heads are 20 percent more efficient than the average product that does not have the label. According to the EPA, the average family can save 2,900 gallons of water per year by installing shower heads that have earned the WaterSense label.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 12, 1925, a Philadelphia radio station broadcasts the first all-star radio program featuring film actors and actresses. Sound films had not yet debuted, and it marked the first time that most listeners had heard the voices of film stars like Lillian Gish and Marion Davies. * On May 13, 1956, Gene Autry’s musical variety show, “Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch,” airs its final broadcast after 16 years. The show featured short skits about cowboys and rustlers, along with musical numbers by Autry, “America’s singing cowboy.” * On May 17, 1792, a group of 24 traders gather in lower Manhattan to work out the regulations of the speculative market. The result was the Buttonwood Agreement, a two-sentence contract that gave birth to the New York Stock Exchange.

Embrace relaxation methods. The APA recommends professionals coping with workplace stress embrace techniques that can effectively alleviate stress. Such techniques include meditation and deep-breathing exercises and can help workers develop their ability to focus purposefully on a single activity.
