1. How do I get rid of spiny sow thistle and Canada thistle? Anne B. Spiny sowthistle is a winter annual that is actually in the sunflower family and not a true thistle. Spiny sowthistle spreads by seed. It flowers from late spring through the summer, depending on the location. The flower is yellow, resembling a dandelion, but forms in a corymbiform cluster. The root of spiny sowthistle is a taproot. It is found in waste areas and other open areas such as roadsides and thin turf. It can be controlled by mowing which prevents the stem and
flowers from forming and eliminates seed formation. The plant can also be cut out. A postemergent herbicide application is effective when spiny sowthistle is young and actively growing but should not be needed if the location will be mowed. For best results, treat prior to bolting.
the first time by early June. Mowing or repeated cutting may be used to help prevent the production of seeds and starving the plant. Persistent removal of the shoots before they attain several leaves will exhaust the storage roots within two years and eliminate the weed. One study found a 21 day weeding schedule was optimal. Postemergent applications of a systemic herbicide may be used. Fall is typically the best time for these treatments when the plant is translocating
food reserves to the rooting structures. Other good times are during the early bolting stage when plants are 6-10” tall and during the bud to flowering stage. Some of the common lawn weed control materials are effective. Spot treatments are good for limited stands. Glyphosate products labeled for the use are effective. Lawns should be properly maintained to promote a healthy, dense turf that with managed mowing will compete well with weeds.
Canada Thistle is a rhizomatous perennial. Since Canada thistle has a deep root system, the only mechanical approach for controlling this weed is to exhaust the storage roots (exhaust perennial roots). I have family members basically in every field as essential workers, (nurse, officer, co, fabric store for masks, etc.) ,but the person I’d like to give extra love to is my mother who works every day to make sure you get your groceries. The amount of stress grocery store workers face is harrowing, and I commend you. I pray you don’t catch it from one of the people from the public. Keep hanging in there. You’re part of the strong and resilient. Continue to do your good so others can feed their families. Peggy at Top’s pharmacy in Hamlin is so nice to bring my prescription out to the car when I am unable to go in. Thank you for your kindness! Also, a shout out to Anthony, one of the pharmacist’s at Top’s. He is more than just someone who fills your prescription for you. He listens
Even I have to feed my family and get groceries every three weeks when we run out. Not all of us have internet to place the pickup orders, and I take every precaution: wearing gloves and my n95 mask when going out as well as disposing of the used gloves in a plastic bag in my car. I do not stay. I do not linger. I do not buy and browse. I write my list, get what I need, stay 6 feet away from people who still don’t do this. I check out. I heard her brag, and then I went home, shut in to do house projects. So yes, I need food to live. Hope that clarifies your confusion.

I went to [local store] over the weekend and was so proud to see young and old wearing masks. What a sharp contrast to those who are fighting for rights and do not see the need to wear masks! As one psychologist put it, “Some people just don’t like being told what to do.” I think he hit the nail on the head. So, in actuality, it really has nothing to do with liberty, but it is an attitude problem. It was a pleasure to see people doing the right thing, even if wearing a mask could be a challenge for some. It renewed my faith in society that there are those who will do the moral and ethical thing in such unsettling times. To the man in the grey hooded sweatshirt and white tennis shoes: Please kindly refrain from stealing the flowers that I and others work so diligently to plant. Your mother would not be amused nor your wife fooled by

if you have questions, and offers sound, practical advice. The other day, he even went the extra mile to come out from the pharmacy area, to show me something that perhaps my son should take. I had a choice to make, and I told him to pick, because I trust his insight. Usually pharmacists can be clinical, counting pills behind the glass partitions without having much if any interaction with the customers who come in to pick up their prescriptions. This is not the case with Anthony! Thanks! I want to thank the mechanics for still working through this pandemic, for keeping doctors, nurses, truckers, and personal vehicles going. I am so appreciative of it. If it were not for them working on my car, I would not have been able to still work and get groceries for my family. I also want to thank their families to whom they go your cheap and thieving behavior for their Mother’s Day gift. Please go to a store and get a beautiful bouquet of flowers and possibly a card. It will be worth it when they see you actually put in the effort. Petty complaints do not deserve the space they take up. Look for the good in every situation! I also am tired of picking up others trash, but at least I can do so! Yes, it would be great if people picked up after themselves or better still, did not throw stuff along roads, but who do we have to blame? Were they ever taught to pick up after themselves? I detest people who use rat poison. Not only is it a horrible way to die, but it can have a ripple effect. I’ve seen it with my own eyes working for a vet for several years, like the cat who ate a mouse that had eaten poison. The vet did all he could do but the cat didn’t make it. Then there were the eagles I watch on the internet whose first

home after being in contact with our vehicles, putting their own families at risk. Just know you are appreciated during this time. I live on North Street and walk my dog on my property. To my surprise during the month of March, I was fascinated in finding beautifully painted, small rocks at the base of my trees, first one, then others. I had spoken of it to my family members, wondering if it might have been them. No one admitted, so I am assuming it was a kind, loving person, maybe even a family trying to spread love and sunshine during these uncertain days. I want you to know, whoever you are, I loved this gesture and looked forward to seeing these beautiful treasures. Thank you, thank you, thank you,
baby died because the dead rat its parent brought to the nest to feed it had died of rat poison; the baby eagle got some of the poison, which killed it. How do we know this? Wildlife people got the dead baby and did a necropsy (autopsy) on it. This was a symbol of our country, of our freedom, and man destroyed it. There are other ways to deal with mice and rats, humane ways, too. Try using traps or smelly things. They don’t like strong smelling stuff like ammonia or bleach or even Irish Spring hand soap, peppermint oil, tea bags, etc. Remember, if you live with woods all around you, learn to live with the creatures in those woods. God put every creature on this earth for a reason. Humans are destroying this earth. I read that millions of birds are gone now. After they go, we will have more insects to contend with. It all has a ripple effect.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This weekend while hiking with my daughter on a public trail, a big dog ran straight up to us and started barking fiercely. We were frightened and didn’t know what to do, so we stood still until the dog ran off. What should we have done instead? -- Paul in Lynn, Massachusetts DEAR PAUL: You and your daughter did the right thing by standing still when the dog approached. Running away or waving your arms may further excite a dog and incite an attack. Preventive Vet has an excellent post detailing what to do when approached by a strange dog, including common body language that can help you interpret whether the dog is relaxed, alert or feeling threatened (go to www.preventivevet.com and search for “off-leash dog”). Here are additional steps to take when approached: 1. Stay calm and observe the dog’s body language and behavior as it approaches. 2. Place your walking stick in front of you, between you and the dog. 3. If it comes close, put out a hand and say “Go home!” or “Sit!” 4. Startle a dog that doesn’t leave: Bang your stick against the ground (don’t wave or swing it) and yell “Go home!” Another recommendation is to carry dog treats on walks. If a loose dog approaches and won’t leave, toss a treat away from you (but in their line of sight) and when they go to eat it, calmly depart the area. Some owners will take issue with the idea of strangers tossing treats at their dog. But letting their dogs run off leash and out of view is risky to the dog and to other people, and just plain irresponsible. Ideally, dogs should be trained to stay within sight of their owners and well socialized to other humans; otherwise, they need to be on a leash.

The Environmental Protection Agency says many bugs that resemble bed bugs. Identifying bed bugs correctly is a critical first step to treating an infestation. Here are some of the more notable attributes of bed bugs: · Bed bugs are generally long and brown with a flat oval-shaped body around the size of an apple seed. Bed bugs that have recently fed will be balloon-like and reddish-brown in color. · Young bed bugs (nymphs) are smaller, and their color is a translucent white-yellow. · Bed bug eggs are pearl-white in color and the size of a pinhead. · Bed bugs have six legs and two antennae and they cannot fly. They cannot jump long distances, instead moving by crawling and climbing. They can climb heights and drop down from above onto beds to find a meal. Orkin of Canada says that, since bed bugs are nocturnal and small, detecting them can be challenging. Usually blood stains on sheets or black spots of dried bed bug excrement indicate an infestation even before bugs are seen. Bed bugs tend to be discovered in the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, and in the folds of curtains. Bed bugs may hide in drawer joints or in electrical receptacles. They even can hide in cracks along the top or bottom of a wall. Bed bugs can survive and remain active at temperatures as low as 46 F, advises the EPA. Heat is what kills them most readily, and a room or area must be hotter than 113 F consistently to do so. Avoiding bed bugs requires diligence. Reducing clutter, inspecting secondhand furniture for bed bugs and vacuuming frequently can help. Check luggage racks and hotel rooms for bed bugs prior to remaining in the room. Cold and hot treatments may kill some of the bed bugs, but an infestation usually will require treatment by a professional exterminator. OATKA EDITION

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING
THE BENEFITS OF BACKYARD KOI PONDS Koi ponds can make for beautiful additions to backyards or home gardens. While many people are drawn to koi ponds because of their aesthetic appeal, there are many additional reasons for homeowners to consider installing koi ponds in their backyards. Ponds and water gardens can transform yards rather quickly. Ponds can add appeal to otherwise mundane yards and provide eye-catching, relaxing spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. Koi ponds have recently fallen into a favor with homeowners in North America, but these popular water features date back several centuries to Asia. Centuries ago, Chinese rice farmers began keeping carp in their rice paddies, and that practice eventually caught on in Japan. The fish started to breed and form slight color variations. Koi, often referred to as “Nishikigoi,” are actually descendants of the common carp, though the koi of today are more brightly hued and ornamental fish than carp. Koi can become a lowmaintenance family pet. These fish tend to grow accustomed to having people around, and will often interact with visitors at the surface of the water. It’s not unusual to have koi beg for food or take food from a person’s hand. They also may tolerate some light handling. Koi ponds also provide some psychological benefits. The sound of the water can be soothing and relaxing. Sitting by the pond may help alleviate stress, as unwinding next to a pond and watching the fish swim by can help individuals decompress.

By JoAnn Derson * Window frames can be tricky to clean. And they are a magnet for dust and dirt, or worse -condensation that can lead to mold. To get into the crevices, employ a toothbrush sprayed with a tiny spritz of furniture polish. It works! * “Firing up the grill? Don’t get hasty. Preheat. Cooking times are based on an even cooking temperature, and you’ll get that good sear on your steaks or chicken. Use a grill thermometer and you’ll know when just the right time is to put dinner on the grill!” -- T.E. in South Carolina * Ever wonder how long your peanut butter will last? On the pantry shelf, you can expect it to hold for 7-12 months if stored in a cool dark place. After opening, it will last 3-4 months in the fridge. * Smudged mascara? Remove it on the fly with a little bit of lip balm. Simply run your finger over the lip balm, then carefully remove the smudge. You also can put a bit of the lip balm on a tissue and use that instead. * “I dropped a glass in the kitchen, and there were a ton of small pieces. After I swept up, I wiped the area with a piece of bread, which picked up all the small shards.” -- W.C. in Kentucky * Stick-down carpet tiles are great for making a path from where you park your car in the garage to the door. It makes a nice nonslip surface.” -- R.T. in Florida

DID YOU KNOW? Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Native Southerners might well be surprised to learn that the word “y’all” dates to 1631! It was first used by the English scholar William Lisle in the sentence, “The captive men of strength I gave to you, the weaker sold; and this y’all know is true.”
Tow o Pavilio Primary
MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT
Hello Pavilion town residents. It is my hope that this letter finds you and your family healthy during these challenging times. By now you likely are aware I am running for Highway Superintendent for our town of Pavilion. I have resided in Pavilion my entire life and am married to Tammy, my wife of 27 years. As much as I would have liked to meet with everyone in person, in respect of honoring social distancing rules. I limited my door-todoor activity. Therefore, I wanted to provide you with my background information and some important details surrounding the dates for voting. June 23 is the Republican Party primary vote and it is important that everyone votes to make your voice heard. You can use your mail in ballot or vote in person at Pavilion Town Building. I would like to provide you with my work experience. My work experience is vast and diverse. I started working on a farm at 15 and continued for many years helping with milking and field work when not working at Kodak. I worked at Kodak for 24 years and, unfortunately, had to take an early retirement due to company downsizing. At Kodak I ran manufacturing equipment and computer related equipment. I then worked at Markin Tubing for 4 years. For the last 20 years, I also ran my own flooring and tiling business. I have never been afraid of hard work or learning new things. Over my working career I have gained many skills that will help me in the position of Highway Superintendent., including running large and small equipment, managing people, negotiating with union, estimating jobs and budgets, and working with the public. Recent state legislation was passed that allows for individuals to run for office that do not live in our town. My belief is the job should be held by someone who lives and pays taxes in the town, and should have been left to local constituents to vote on changing who could run. I am vested in our great town and am looking for your support and vote in the primary on June 23rd and in the general election on November 3, 2020. Be safe, stay healthy, and thank you for your consideration. Much appreciated,
Todd Hackett GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Depression is a very treatable condition. Psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications or a combination thereof can be very effective in managing symptoms. Mental health professionals can work with individuals to find the right therapy based on symptoms and severity of the depression. Also, it may take some time to find the right medication or treatment; therefore, people are urged to remain patient and hopeful. The National Institute of Mental Health says people who suspect they may be suffering from depression should make an appointment to see a doctor or health care provider. The sooner action is taken, the more quickly the condition can be addressed.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE Cornea: The cornea is the clear covering of the eye. The National Eye Institute notes that, unlike most other tissues in the body, the cornea does not contain blood vessels to provide nourishment or protection against infection. By donating their corneas, donors can help restore sight to people who lost theirs due to disease or injury.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Morning Stiffness Is Sign of Osteoarthritis ---
Give Back
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 67-year-old black female who’s been diagnosed with “a little arthritis” in my right hip. Now retired from a desk job, I unfortunately still am not getting enough exercise. My issue is that after sitting for a length of time, I’m in excruciating pain and can’t stand up at all. Once I straighten up and get moving, the pain subsides. I’ve been told “you’re getting old,” but I’m not old! I’m about 30 pounds overweight. Also, when I stand for any length of time, my lower back aches. Would taking a morning walk and a yoga class alleviate this problem? I’m so embarrassed when I get out of my car or get up from the dinner table. -- S.H. ANSWER: There are many types of arthritis, and the answer to your question varies a bit depending on type. I think you probably have the most common form, osteoarthritis, so I’m going to answer you assuming that’s the case. Stiffness in the morning, quickly relieved by exercise, is a hallmark of osteoarthritis. It’s common, treatable and not something to be embarrassed about. Exercise is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis. It can be difficult to get started, but the more people exercise, the more they are able to do. Walking and yoga both are excellent ideas, but the best exercise is the one you will want to keep doing. Osteoarthritis affects a fair number of 67-year-olds, but it’s important to remember that it’s not your age that is causing the pain: It’s the arthritis. Although we know of no treatments that can reverse the course of osteoarthritis, medications (including a few supplements), exercise and physical therapy all can ease symptoms and improve function. Losing weight takes stress off the joints and is recommended, but is not easy. Finally, severe arthritis can be treated surgically, with a joint replacement. That’s not a procedure to take lightly or have done too early. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 85 years old. I have numbness in my hands -- sometimes the right, sometimes the left; sometimes both hands or not at all. It lasts only a while. My doctor feels that it’s a pinched nerve in my neck. Can you give me any advice? -- J.B. ANSWER: A pinched nerve in the neck becomes more prevalent as people age. The nerve can be compressed by bony structures in people with osteoarthritis in the neck (this is spinal stenosis), or by disk material in someone with a herniated disk. Having symptoms on both sides is less common than having symptoms consistently on one side only. A careful physical exam can give clues that this is the case, but an MRI or other imaging study is the best way to be sure of the diagnosis. Hand numbness also may be caused by the nerve being “pinched” in other locations: in the carpal tunnel in the wrist or in the cubital tunnel in the elbow. An EMG test can help sort out where this is coming from. It’s certainly possible to have carpal tunnel syndrome on both sides. My best advice is not to rush into surgery at any age, but especially not at age 85. Physical therapy can prevent many people from needing surgery. However, if numbness progresses to weakness, it’s time to reconsider. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent). There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Finding Fresh Food Many of us haven't been eating right lately. Sometimes the stores are out of what we want; sometimes we can't get an available pickup time. But there are a few other safe options for getting what we need. Community Supported Agriculture: Farmers near you like to know in advance if their crops will have a market once it's time to harvest, and they sell "subscriptions" that allow you, as a shareholder, to pick up fresh food once a week. Do an internet search for "community supported agriculture" in your area. Look for ones that sell more than just vegetables. Some also have eggs, butter, bread, jams, flowers and meat. Farm Stands: You'll see these along the road -- a small farmer or gardener who sells his produce at the end of the driveway out of a small stand. Stop and take a look, and ask questions. Most of them will have a limited variety, but it will all be fresh, probably picked just that morning. You might have to point to the items you want so they don't have people touching the food. That's a safety point you'll appreciate. Ask about other foods that will be available, and make it a point to stop by. And remember, no matter where you go, look for marks on the ground for places to stand six feet apart. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
Celebrating Father’s Day while social distancing To say that COVID-19 changed life as we know it would be an understatement. Many people likely never imagined how much their daily routines would be affected when this novel coronavirus was just a blip on the radar at the end of 2019. Social distancing may have become the new normal, but it doesn’t mean that holidays like Father’s Day have to be a washout. As evidenced by holidays that have already taken place amidst social distancing guidelines, people are finding creative ways to celebrate special occasions. Here are some ways to make Father’s Day special even while social distancing. · Turn to social apps. Virtual meeting applications, like Zoom, Skype and FaceTime provide invaluable opportunities to speak and connect face-to-face when in-person gatherings are not possible. They also can be used to break bread together or to play games or relay stories. · Deliver gifts. Take a few cues from the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus and plan to drop gifts and run. Seniors and people who have compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of contracting contagious illnesses. While it may be tempting to visit your father or grandfather in person, even a short visit could put his health at risk. Instead, leave gifts outside the house. For added fun, hide the gifts and provide scavenger hunt clues. · Dine out at home. If dining out was something you typically do on Father’s Day, replicate the experience at home. Try to recreate Dad’s favorite meal from the restaurant he loves or see if that restaurant offers curbside pickup. Transform the dining table into a restaurant table, or take the meal outdoors for some al fresco fun. Let kids serve as the wait staff. · Spend time together. One of the silver linings of social distancing is the opportunity for family members who reside under one roof to have more uninterrupted time together. Chances are having the kids nearby and sharing some stories and laughs together will be a perfect way for Dad to enjoy Father’s Day. With some creative thinking, dads across the county can still enjoy the special day they deserve. TF206039

Batavia Business & Professional Women’s Club, Inc. Offers Connection and Community By David Fish
P
oised to celebrate their 100-year anniversary next year, the Batavia Business & Professional Women’s Club, Inc. (BBPWC) has been helping Genesee County women build stronger relationships with each other and their communities since 1921. Standing out among the many all-men’s clubs of the day, the BBPWC dedicated themselves to civic endeavors and fundraising for worthy local causes and programs. In addition to the support and fellowship of likeminded women, Club members experience the satisfaction of making a difference. The BBPWC raises thousands of dollars annualy for both GVEP students as well as Genesee County High School Seniors. “We celebrate students who have received scholarships,” said BBPWC President Shannon Plath. “We offer seven scholarships for Genesee County schools and GVEP scholarships. We also give five service awards based on the nominations of others.” BBPWC Club members, led by Plath along with Lee Doyle, Danielle Torcello, Michelle Gillard, Donna West, Kathy Hameister, Joy Hume, Lorie Currier and Vicki Wolak – officers and board members – typically fundraise throughout the year, both to finance these scholarships and to support local charitable organizations and programs. “We also have a Community Service Committee which identifies volunteer needs,” stated Plath. “Our members have several different strengths, skill sets and abilities, including leadership capability, which they use to help us best serve our community.” “We also like to focus on community service and give back as much as possible,” said Plath. “Whether that means bringing water and granola bars to our local Habitat for Humanity group or donating to the Salvation Army during Thanksgiving when they are giving meals to families in need, we do it. We have also helped make bags for kids in need with the Youth Bureau. We have supported All Babies Cherished as they support local families; in fact, we plant their flower beds every year.”
250 people with its services, up from 100 prior to COVID-19. We recently collected cards of encouragement for those supported by Meals on Wheels and sent them out on Friday, May 22nd.” “That is a lot of what we do now,” she continued. “We are making phone calls, checking in on people and taking them little mementoes, letting them know we are always thinking of them even if they are unable to attend or participate in current meetings and events, focusing on our elderly. We are also in the process of giving our scholarship winners and service awards, which we have to do on ZOOM.” Plath, having been a part of BBPWC for three years, truly believes the Club is well worth her time and effort. “For me personally, it is about building relationships with other ladies in the community, and it has given me a way to reach out to and serve my community, as well. That is partly why I decided to get involved. I love the network we have with this great group of ladies, and we do everything we can to give back to our community. We are an organization worth looking into. If it interests you, we encourage you to get involved!” For more information or to join, visit https://bataviabpw.wordpress.com or email bataviabpw@gmail.com.
Members of the Batavia Business & Professional Women’s Club, Inc.
The BBPWC meets once each month, choosing a different location in Genesee County at which to gather for dinner. “These meetings enable ladies to come together, enjoy a meal, network, learn about the different businesses involved, and empower each other,” Plath observed. “We conduct our necessary business, and we socialize, talk, plan and meet new members. Our leadership also meets monthly.” New members are encouraged to make new friends, learn more about member businesses and to embrace BBPWC values of giving of one’s self and serving one’s community. The advent of COVID-19 naturally brought changes to the BBOWC. “We started holding ZOOM meetings,” shared Plath. “In the beginning, it was tough. Fundraising has also been a challenge. Still, we have collected money for Salvation Army to support their food pantry at Northgate. Meals on Wheels are reaching about

“Economy is the art of making the most of life. The love of economy is the root of all virtue...” ~ George Bernard Shaw
1.
2.
3.
Maybe you never thought of “economy” as anything except scrimping and doing without. Actually, as Shaw tells us, we economize in order to conserve our assets. Thus we are able to derive even greater pleasure at some future time. We can practice economy in the use of our time as well as with our money. We expend our time and money where benefits are the greatest, which gives us the most out of life. Being economical does not have to mean being unhappy, as we learn when we practice it. Many people find comfort in pre-arranging their own funeral service. This relieves loved ones of the need to make painful decisions under emotional stress. Let our staff explain other advantages, too.

Any uneven or abnorm al tread w ear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the w heels realigned at the very least. M echanics m ay recom m end rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 m iles, or about every six m onths for the average driver. Wheel realignm ent m ay be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road. Drivers m ay discover extrem e tread w ear, bulges or even cracks in the sidew all during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s tim e to replace the tires.

Who (or what) is at risk? While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general. However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies. On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed.

You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s.

How can we help protect the bees? It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers.

As pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, crop production and biodiversity, I recommend you stay calm and keep gardening to provide your fuzzy friends with the flowers and habitat they need to thrive.
MAKE HIS FIRST FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL Let Dad sleep in. Chances are Dad is enamored with his little bundle of joy, but it’s well-known that being a new father often means sacrificing sleep time - especially for the first several months to a year of that child’s life. Enlist the help of a family member who can be on baby watch while Dad gets to sleep in on the weekend of his big day. With some extra sleep, Dad can enjoy Father’s Day that much more. What do we know? Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019.

People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency. OATKA EDITION

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
