STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Sigurd the Mighty, a ninth-century Norse earl of Orkney, was killed by an enemy he had beheaded several hours earlier. He’d tied the man’s head to his horse’s saddle, but while riding home one of its protruding teeth grazed his leg, causing an infection from which the unlucky Sigurd died.

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted w hen everything is w orking correctly. W heels and suspension systems bear the w eight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some w ear and tear is to be expected. M any drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for w orn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essential for a comfortable and smooth ride.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Is a 3-Legged Dog Worth Adopting? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an opportunity to adopt a wonderful three-legged, overweight, 4-year-old Shepherd. I’m happy to help him lose the weight, as I already walk 2 to 4 miles almost every day. However, I’m not sure if he can walk those distances. Can he be trained to walk with me that far? Do you think he would be able to swim for exercise? -- Donna P., via email

Come in for your cleaning! WHITENING SPECIAL:

DEAR DONNA: I’ve met so many animals that, despite a challenge such as a missing limb or paralysis, are still energetic and participate in every facet of life that they can. Your potential new family member may be able to train up to walking a couple of miles, eventually. He’s young enough, and Shepherds are certainly energetic enough. His extra weight will make it difficult to manage on three legs. You can best control his weight through a diet prescribed by a veterinarian, rather than relying on exercise alone. Don’t just cut calories without guidance, as he will need to eat good-quality food to put on muscle and get strong enough to walk with you. Swimming, if he is comfortable doing it, can be a great option to keep him exercising while putting much less stress on his joints. Introduce him to this activity gradually, and don’t force him into the water. Some dogs leap right in (I’m lookin’ at you, Labradors), while others are hesitant. If you’re still on the fence about adopting this wonderful boy, talk to a veterinarian to find out what challenges you will face in getting him to a healthy weight.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne

By JoAnn Derson

* Plane exhaust kills more people than plane crashes. Approximately 10,000 people die annually from toxic airplane pollutants.

* Fill a 2-liter soda bottle with water, then plunge the top upside down into a potted plant for self-watering while you are on vacation. Use smaller bottles for smaller pots. * Going to the beach for your vacation? Here’s a handy hint to take great care of your swimsuit. (They get more expensive all the time!) Pack at least two suits and bring a box of baking soda. Soak the suit for 15 minutes in a baking soda and water solution, then lay flat on a towel. Roll the towel up and wring lightly. Unroll and hang to dry. Rotate suits. -- JoAnn * Help for a sunburn: Take two nonsteroidal antiinflammatories (aspirin, ibuprofen) right away. Soak a cloth in cold milk and drape over the burn until it warms to room temperature. Repeat if necessary and apply a light moisturizer. * Use your Christmas light timers to set different lights to go on or off at certain times of the day while you are away on vacation. You can even use a timer on a radio, so it comes on sometimes too. The variation will make people think you are home. * To ease the ache of a brain freeze, simply cup your hands over your mouth and nose. Blow out hot air, and it will recirculate to warm your palate in seconds. Works like a charm. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Hey You! To the young man in the little purple car that seems to think he has to speed through town. Your plate number has been turned into the cops. Slow down! There are young children here.

S E V RA St. Agnes Cemetery Many, many thanks to Jim Harrington for his organization, expert tree trimming, and volunteer hours at St. Agnes Cemetery! For five weeks, Jim selflessly gave of his time and talent in trimming trees and has earned that halo that only good people can see! Special thanks to Matt Weslowsk, The Gerwig Family, Kevin Van Allen, Richard Burke, Ken Farrell, Russ Ruter, Mike Cochrane, Sheriff Tom Dougherty, George Eblacker, Jerry Dupont, Jerry Dougherty, Tom Crye and crew, and a bunch of Avon Central students who donated their time. The St. Agnes Cemetery looks beautiful thanks to these wonderful volunteers! We live in such an awesome, caring community! Many thanks! I just wanted to say thank you to the person who turned in my social security card at Lowe’s in Hornell. I accidentally left the zipper on my wallet open, and it had fallen out in the parking lot, much to my dismay. It’s so nice to know that there are still good people in this world. Thanks again! Thank you, patriot! During a March wind storm, the American flag in front of a building on Main Street was ripped. The flag continued to rip during following windy days. I am grateful to the person who replaced the flag with an even bigger flag. Several times a day, I look at the flag and thank God that I live in America. Kindness I was shopping in a local plaza, came out of the store and couldn’t find my car, and started to look. A lady got out of her car and started to help, then another and another, until four ladies were looking for my car. I told them no worries, I will find it, but they insisted and kept looking until they found it! (As you know, all cars look alike now. ) I thanked them so much and realized that is why we live in a small town where people are kind and would take the trouble to do that for a complete stranger. I hope they read this and know it’s for them. Thank you again!

Frustrated I have 2 rants relating to customer service: 1. I called [local newspaper] to stop delivery while I was on vacation. I answered the recorded questions and received a confirmation email. The paper was delivered during my absence anyway. When I called to ask what happened, all I received was an apology. 2. I called to hold my mail. I followed the recording and was hung up on and tried again and could not get through. I had to wait an hour for a call back to schedule the mail hold. My mail was not delivered on the day I requested. I called the 800 number and had to wait an hour and a half before someone called me back to tell me they would contact the [local town] office. I called the [local town] office, but no one answered the phone. At 7:30am the next morning, someone from the [local town] office called to tell me my mail would be delivered that day. I asked what happened and was told a sub did not pick up the hold mail. I had a great vacation but a frustrating return home. Choices Who likes to be told what to do? Not many in my opinion, so don’t tell others what to do if you don’t like being told what to do. However, most of the people I know who hate being told what to do are the first ones to tell others what to do. So what is the solution? Live and let live. God will take care of the rest. Love your pets? Can’t believe people walking their dogs on hot, hot pavement in the middle of the day with temperatures soaring over 90. Why not find a shady area, or go early in the AM? Poor animals! And, to the convertible driver, top down, temp 92, dog in the back seat with no cover available: consider the heat or sun stroke in animals! Water is needed! Too bad for the dog that he has that owner. Think a bit sensibly and responsibly. Also, there is a gorgeous dog near me in a electric fenced area with no one paying attention to him, and every time a person walks by, the dog looks up near his toy ball, hoping for someone to throw it, or at least pay attention. Why own a pet?

Dust Mite Allergy Triggers Cough

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: For months, I have had a persistent cough that I have been unable to get help with. I saw an allergist about three years ago and was told I am allergic to dust mites. I was first referred to a lung doctor where X-rays showed that my cheek sinus drains were completely blocked, and then to an ear, nose and throat doctor, who also confirmed this diagnosis. This ENT doctor recommended I have surgery to unblock the drains and clear out the sinus area. I understand that sinus drainage can cause coughing and wonder if this would still make me cough. I sometimes cough until I can cough up something, and this seems to stop my cough for a while. I was using a nasal rinse for a while until about two weeks ago when it caused my nose to bleed. The ENT doctor prescribed antibiotics and oral steroids that did not make any difference. It doesn’t seem to make any difference whether I’m home or sitting in the doctor’s office, I’m still coughing. What is the best way to deal with dust mite allergy? -- J.S. ANSWER: There are many causes of chronic cough, but postnasal drip is at the top of the list. Dust mites are indeed a common allergen, and symptoms may include runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing and cough from postnasal drip. Specific treatment for dust mites should include physical barriers, such as covers for pillows and mattresses, and sometimes for other soft surfaces, like furniture cushions, but this is only part of an effective strategy. Removing as many fabrics as possible (draperies, carpets, stuffed children’s toys) where dust mites can live is essential. Regular cleaning is necessary, and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters for vacuuming have been shown to reduce dust mites. A low-humidity environment can be very effective in discouraging dust mites, and cooler air -- especially at night -- can reduce irritation of nasal passages caused by dry air. Many interventions for a prolonged period are necessary to reduce dust mite infestation and the symptoms associated with them. This is critical, because the issue of the sinuses is probably secondary to ongoing allergic exposure. Fixing your sinuses will not fix your ongoing symptoms. Without control of the allergens, you will continue to have symptoms and may even develop sinus blockages again, no matter how good a job the surgeon does on your sinuses.

DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

SWAMPS

IMPROVING A GUMMY SMILE Sometimes genetics can leave individuals with smiles they feel don’t exactly suit them. For some that may mean a grin that shows more pink gums than pearly whites, a condition known as “gingival display.” When this is the case, a crown lengthening procedure may be the solution to the problem. The process reshapes the gums at the base of the teeth, removing small amounts of excess gum tissue to expose more tooth area. If there is not enough area available, crowns or veneers can be placed. Although full recovery takes approximately three months, normal activities can resume within a day or so, and soft food limitations are only required until any sutures dissolve.

Want to improve your smile? There are many techniques your dentist has to alter and otherwise enhance your appearance and give you good reason to smile. Let BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL help you choose the best method for your particular circumstances. If it’s time to stop hiding your smile, we invite you to experience the kind of up-to-date, knowledgeable dental care we provide here at 6 Batavia City Centre. We have office hours by appointment–call 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances.

P.S. Crown lengthening can help restore teeth damaged by severe decay.

TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE Cornea: The cornea is the clear covering of the eye. The National Eye Institute notes that, unlike most other tissues in the body, the cornea does not contain blood vessels to provide nourishment or protection against infection. By donating their corneas, donors can help restore sight to people who lost theirs due to disease or injury. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A green cat was born in Denmark in 1995. Some people believe that high levels of copper in the water pipes nearby may have given his fur a verdigris effect. * Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of the iconic jungle man Tarzan, worked as a pencil-sharpener salesman before trying his hand at fiction. He only started writing at the age of 36 to support his wife and two kids. * Boanthropy is a psychological disorder in which patients believe they are a cow. * The infamous crocodile jump by James Bond in "Live and Let Die" was performed with real crocs by the only person willing to attempt it -- the owner of the crocodile farm. * In early 2015, Mattel released Hello Barbie, an interactive talking doll that didn't just repeat preprogrammed phrases, but could actually hold a two-way conversation. The doll raised major concerns over privacy, however, since the discussions between it and child owners were recorded and sent to third-party vendors. Goodbye, Barbie! Thousands of people try their hands at do-it-yourself home improvement projects every year. Whether working indoors or outdoors, wearing safety gear and exercising caution is a necessity when undertaking any home remodeling project. According to the Home Safety Council, one in five consumers will need medical attention this year as a result of home improvement projects. A 2013 survey by 3M TEKK Protection and the National Safety Council found that more than one-quarter of DIY home improvement projects ended with injuries to homeowners or someone else in the household. Falls from ladders, cuts from power tools and injuries from thrown debris account for many emergency room visits. Accidents involving chemicals and cleaning agents also can occur. Safety should be the utmost priority when renovating, and that means utilizing appropriate safety equipment. Page 22

KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN

LAWN & LANDSCAPING

Fight intruders with odor. Stray cats may mistake gardens for litter boxes and enter them to relieve themselves. Preventing such intrusions can be as simple as placing items around the garden to reduce the likelihood that gardens will be mistaken for litter boxes. Peels from oranges and lemons or coffee grounds can be placed in the garden and can emit odors strong enough to deter cats.

What constitutes “ethnic” food differs from person to person. Someone of Italian descent may dine regularly on garlic-infused pasta dishes, while a person from another area of the world may find such foods exotic.

In the cultural melting pot of North America, various cuisines representing countries that span the globe are within arm’s length for many people. According to Technomic, a Chicago-based research firm, 77 percent of Americans enjoy ethnic foods while dining out once a month. Around 38 percent order ethnic food weekly. In addition, many more people prepare ethnic cuisine at home. A growing interest in ethnic foods is fueled by young people. Technomic notes that millennials are more apt to want to try various cuisines and then incorporate them into their regular dining experiences. The National Restaurant Association found that 60 percent of people are likely to “tie their favorite ethnic food to their family history.” Interest in ethnic foods tends to be highest in urban areas where restaurants and ingredients may be more readily available. When it comes to the top ethnic cuisines enjoyed throughout the states or provinces and territories, Chinese, Mexican and Italian rally for the top spots on diners’ plates. While the NRA has Italian cuisine as earning topbilling, Technomic’s list says that Chinese food, at 76 percent, followed by Mexican food (74 percent) and Italian (71 percent) comprise the biggest ethnic draws. Japanese or sushi comes in a distant fourth at 32 percent in the United States. The statistics portal Statista indicates that, as of January 2015, Chinese, American and Italian foods are quite popular in Canada. However, the percentage of people who cook these foods as opposed to eating them out at a restaurant varies. Chinese food is most widely enjoyed in a restaurant setting, while Italian food is frequently whipped up at home. As immigration tides change, ethnic cuisine may change with them. However, interest in experiencing ethnic dining is likely to remain consistent.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.
