SHRIMP POTATO PATTIES Makes about 2 dozen 6 medium-size red potatoes, peeled and quartered 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter 1 cup finely chopped yellow onions 1/4 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup seeded and chopped red bell peppers 1/2 cup seeded and chopped green bell peppers 1/2 cup seeded and chopped yellow bell peppers 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon Tabasco brand pepper sauce 2 pounds medium-size shrimp, peeled, deveined and coarsely ground in a food processor 2 large eggs, well beaten 1/4 cup chopped freshly parsley leaves 1/2 cup peanut oil 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1. In a large saucepan, boil the potatoes in lightly salted water to cover until fork tender. Remove from the heat and drain. Transfer them to a large mixing bowl and mash with a fork. Let cool. 2. Melt the butter over medium heat in a medium-size skillet. Add the onions, celery, bell peppers, salt, cayenne, black pepper, and Tabasco, and cook, stirring, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook, stirring until they turn pink, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool for about 5 minutes. 3. Combine the shrimp mixture with the potato mixture. Add the eggs and parsley and mix well. Let cool for 10 minutes. 4. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. 5. Form the shrimp mixture into patties, using 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the mixture, depending on what size you desire, and pat lightly with the flour. Cook two to three at a time in the hot oil until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels. Serve hot. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

EARLY TREATMENT KEY TO MANAGING SEASONAL DISEASES IN CATTLE (NAPSI) — Two of the more common production-impacting health issues cattlemen see in their herds this time of year are foot rot and pinkeye. Left untreated, each can lead to more serious, chronic health problems.
Happy Father's Day to Our Hero
Foot rot, pinkeye and other common cattle ailments are highly dependent on pasture, weather and other conditions. Foot rot is more problematic when cattle are kept in wet, muddy and manure-heavy lots. Caused by the Fusobacterium Necrophorum bacteria, symptoms include swelling and inflammation between the toes, resulting in lameness and reluctance to walk.
Stanley Rodger Deuteronomy 5:16 Honour thy Father and Mother as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee.
Pinkeye is a highly infectious eye condition that can affect cattle of all ages, often on tall-grass pastures and in environmental situations that can irritate the eye. Flies are a major irritant and vector for the disease, so controlling them and other sources of irritant is critical. Delayed treatment of pinkeye can result in loss of the eye, reduced performance and a less marketable animal. Fortunately, with timely surveillance and treatment, these infections, along with other diseases, can be easily and cost-effectively managed by producers with a non-prescription injectable product such as Noromycin 300 LA, a highly concentrated, lowdose, fast-acting formulation of oxytetracycline. Effectively used by cattlemen for many years, it is widely available through most farm and veterinary supply companies.
Eased into eternity too soon.

MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT
Hello Pavilion town residents. It is my hope that this letter finds you and your family healthy during these challenging times. By now you likely are aware I am running for Highway Superintendent for our town of Pavilion. I have resided in Pavilion my entire life and am married to Tammy, my wife of 27 years. As much as I would have liked to meet with everyone in person, in respect of honoring social distancing rules. I limited my door-todoor activity. Therefore, I wanted to provide you with my background information and some important details surrounding the dates for voting. June 23 is the Republican Party primary vote and it is important that everyone votes to make your voice heard. You can use your mail in ballot or vote in person at Pavilion Town Building. I would like to provide you with my work experience. My work experience is vast and diverse. I started working on a farm at 15 and continued for many years helping with milking and field work when not working at Kodak. I worked at Kodak for 24 years and, unfortunately, had to take an early retirement due to company downsizing. At Kodak I ran manufacturing equipment and computer related equipment. I then worked at Markin Tubing for 4 years. For the last 20 years, I also ran my own flooring and tiling business. I have never been afraid of hard work or learning new things. Over my working career I have gained many skills that will help me in the position of Highway Superintendent., including running large and small equipment, managing people, negotiating with union, estimating jobs and budgets, and working with the public. Recent state legislation was passed that allows for individuals to run for office that do not live in our town. My belief is the job should be held by someone who lives and pays taxes in the town, and should have been left to local constituents to vote on changing who could run. I am vested in our great town and am looking for your support and vote in the primary on June 23rd and in the general election on November 3, 2020. Be safe, stay healthy, and thank you for your consideration. Much appreciated,
Todd Hackett GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

SENIOR NEWS LINE
Cancer and COVID-19
By Matilda Charles
The COVID-19 outbreak of 2020 caught many people, particularly those in the western hemisphere, off guard. As the virus spread, the lives of hundreds of millions of people throughout North America and Europe changed dramatically and seemingly overnight, prompting many to wonder if they or their loved ones were going to get sick. No one was thought to be immune to COVID-19, though many people were unfortunately believed to be more vulnerable to the disease than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions are at the greatest risk of getting sick from COVID-19. The American Cancer Society notes that cancer patients, like groups with an elevated risk of getting sick from COVID-19, must do all they can to avoid being exposed to the virus. That’s because the immune systems of cancer patients, particularly those in active chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant patients, can be severely weakened. In fact, in March 2020 officials with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center warned that early data from China and Italy, two countries which experienced early and widespread outbreaks of the disease, indicated that cancer patients would be at increased risk of getting the virus. Are all cancer patients at risk? Dr. Steve Pergram, the medical director of infection prevention at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, said that patients with blood malignancies are most at risk for COVID-19. Blood malignancies include non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and multiple myeloma. While people with these forms of cancer may be most at risk of getting COVID-19, it’s important to note that all cancer patients, including those who recently concluded treatment, are vulnerable. Those who concluded treatment should know that the aftereffects of treatment can linger long after treatment programs have ended, and those aftereffects may continue to compromise patients’ immune systems.
Keep Your Spirits Up Depending where we live, many of us are still in lockdown. Still, there are ways to keep our spirits up. Plants can make all the difference in how we feel in our environment. Check your local nursery's website for small plants you can either have delivered or pick up at the curb. Some of the easiest to grow are pothos, spider plant and philodendron. Beware, however, if you have pets. Be sure you can either hang up your plant or put it up on a bookcase where the pet can't reach it. Books we enjoyed a long time ago can take us back to a time and place that was calm and safe. Look on your own bookshelves or consider getting an e-reader if you don't want to take a chance going into your own library, assuming it's open. Baking can fill the house with lovely smells. Since finding flour is impossible in many parts of the country, look online for hundreds of recipes that don't require flour. No-flour banana bread, flourless chocolate cake ... you can even make oatmeal muffins. Just be certain you can acquire all the ingredients before you set your heart on making a recipe. Zoom is the online conference program that so many companies are using for business meetings. We can learn Zoom, too, and stay in touch with family and friends if we have a computer or device with a camera. Explore the basic free version of Zoom. You'll be limited to 40 minutes in group meetings, with no limit on one-toone meetings. Your first step will be to read online instructions and get comfortable with the steps to set up a connection. Your second step will be to tell family and friends you're ready to start Zooming! (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
What can cancer patients do to protect themselves from COVID-19? Cancer patients should embrace the safety protocols recommended by the CDC, including social distancing measures and limiting direct contact with other people. Seniors in cancer treatment should take advantages of opportunities to limit their exposure to COVID-19, such as visiting grocery stores during seniors-only hours and opting to participate in digital religious services instead of in-person services. In addition, patients can work with their cancer care teams to devise ways to continue receiving treatment without elevating their risk of exposure to COVID-19. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

How To Avoid Growing Bored In Retirement • Embrace a new hobby. Whether it’s perfecting your golf game, writing that novel, learning to cook like a gourmet chef or whatever else you might have always wanted to do, retirement is a great time to do it. • Volunteer. If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the 1st century AD, Roman men as well as women used cosmetics -- lightening their skin with powder, applying red pigment to their cheeks, and painting their nails, though you’d hardly want to use their form of nail polish today -- a nasty mixture of pig fat and blood. They also painted their heads to camouflage bald spots!

Fostering a Pet vs. Adopting
GAME-CHANGING CONNECTIVITY
ROCHESTER
PAW'S CORNER
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the difference between pet adoption and fostering? -- Jess in Knoxville DEAR JESS: An adopted pet is going to his or her forever home, a successful story every animal shelter wants to see replay again and again. But many pets aren’t quite ready to be adopted. They may be too young. They may be recovering from abuse and injuries. They may need to be observed to figure out what home environment is best for them. Sometimes, a shelter runs out of space. And some rescue organizations don’t have shelter facilities at all. In all these circumstances, this is where foster families come into play. A foster is a temporary arrangement, either for a predetermined amount of time or until a pet is adopted. Rather than being stuck in a chilly kennel with little interaction, a foster pet stays in a warm, loving home -- an arrangement that vastly reduces their stress and helps them heal. Some pets are never ready for adoption and remain a foster for the rest of their life. Others are adopted by the foster family if approved by the rescue organization. Caring for a foster pet takes dedication, and it helps to have experience caring for pets. If you’re interested in being a foster parent to a pet, check with the local shelter or rescue group. They will have an application for you to fill out, and then will evaluate you and your living space to determine if you are a good fit for the foster program and which pets would do best in your care.

I would like to thank Tom who noticed my ad for a nice Small Business opportunity, who gave me a heads up, of laws in NYS (sinkers). Thanks again, R. Dupuis Every year, I get my lawn rolled. I want to thank both Nate and his father Kevin Harding. They not only do a good job, but they are also very nice. In this world, where it has become increasingly harder and harder to meet people who are considerate and personable,
In response to the person who wrote that they felt like they lived next to the Addams Family because their neighbors’ yard was overcome with buttercups and the grass is not cut the way they thought it should be: Really? Really? People are dying with the coronavirus daily, unable to breathe, and you are complaining about your neighbors’ grass? I pray you wake up soon to what really matters such as the Bible states--to love your neighbor as yourself--and pray for suffering neighbors all over the world. In response to Not Ego. The governor made it plain as

it is a delight to know Kevin and Nate. It is a plus when you find someone who not only does a job well done, but who also has a very nice disposition to go along with it. In all the years that Kevin and Nate have rolled my lawn, they have always been so kind to me, as well. Every spring I can rest assured that they will be by to do my lawn. That is how dependable they are. Thank you both so much! I really appreciate the both of you! Thank you to Green Renewable in Manchester. They donated thousands of bags of mulch, potting soil, and fertilizer to local residents. The donation of these items has helped to beautify our communities and was certainly very much appreciated. Thank you, Green Renewable, for your generosity!
could be today while he was in Rochester. It’s shear foolishness not to wear a mask when there is a strong possibility that you will be near someone. If you are walking alone in the woods, fine, no mask required. However, if you get where you may be in contact with someone, then by all means, you should be wearing a mask. How disrespectful to all the hard-working people in the medical field to be so unwilling to do so. They risk their own lives to save others. There were people in a parking lot the other day, in close proximity to one another. No masks! The governor was asked if people should be fined if not wearing a mask. He said, “Yes.” So, the person who wrote the original Rant did get the facts right. I suggest you do the same! In our town a family has moved out and left their cats. They come to my house and get my cat all upset. I know who you are. Also,

I was excited when I saw that I can now subscribe to have the Penny Saver mailed to me each week with my mail. I have been running out to the store first thing on Friday morning to make sure I pick up a copy of the Penny Saver before they are all taken. It is great to know I will not need to do that any longer, especially when the weather in the winter is bad. Thank you so much for starting this subscription service! Thank you to all the state, county, and town and village policemen and women. We appreciate the risks you take every day to keep us all safe. Protest is one of the most American acts in which a citizen can engage. The “freedom to assemble” and “redress of grievances” is right there in the First
you do not feed them. They are feral by now. Cannot get near them. The one grey tiger is now limping on three legs. Do I have to call Animal Control and give your name? This is abandonment, animal cruelty! I feel so sorry for them. I cannot take them in. As I did one time with one of your cats which was a grey tiger. I even saw another one of your so-called pets get hit right in front of me and killed. Please take care of these animals. Their your responsibility! At least take the one to the vet. As I cannot catch them! This is cruel. They are God’s creatures too! This has been going on too long. I was told you were trying to catch them but see they are still around. Take care of them. This is in response to the post Messy Lawns. I suggest you read the post in its entirety. It was in response to another post. It was encouraging them to keep up with their yard no matter what, because that is the right thing to do even if

Amendment. Of course, we should condemn any violence, but 99% of the protesters are completely peaceful. When the protest is for something as universally beneficial as racial justice, then those who stand up for what’s right should be regarded as heroes, just like the Abolitionists, Suffragettes, and Civil Rights activists of the past. Heck, the American Revolution was one big protest against injustice! Of the few hundred people at a protest in [local town], everyone was respectful, peaceful, and wore masks. Let’s take hold of this opportunity to improve our society together! I always enjoy driving around the Avon circle in the summertime. Again, this year, the Avon Garden Club has done a beautiful job in making our park and surrounding islands a masterpiece of color and beauty! Thank you!
others don’t. It was also showing, how others, like myself, have to contend with neighbor’s who just don’t take care of their lawns and yard. So, read the post again to get the true meaning before firing off on someone. The Governor said it loud and clear; when a person wears a mask, they are saying that they respect the other person. They respect the first responders, physicians, nurses, etc., who have been killing themselves to help others. It was said short but sweet, without any room for opinions. Medical professionals are not superheroes. They take care of those with COVID-19, yet they, for the most part, stay well. The Governor said it’s because of the masks and gowns. A mask is a necessary precaution. There is so much posted about liberty. Respect others! That’s what it should be about.

GRADUATION ETIQUETTE Handle limited seats with courtesy. Many schools limit the number of seats each student can reserve for guests. This can make it tricky when there are a number of people who are worthy of an invite. Explain to friends and family who you cannot invite that you would love to have them there but are restricted by ticket allotments. Try to have both sides of the family represented. United Way of Genesee County: Generosity through Crisis By Amanda Dudek
I
n the communities of Genesee County, like so many communities across our nation, COVID-19 has economically impacted families. Some lost their jobs, often waiting extended periods for unemployment insurance, and others faced reduced hours during the shutdown. During this challenging time, many of those in need have looked to the nonprofits supported by the United Way of Genesee County for much needed support.
“There has been fear,” said Tammy Hathaway, Executive Director of the United Way of Genesee County (UWGC). “There was fear of how to pay the bills and fear of how to feed their families. Those who hadn’t needed to access services before didn’t know how to do so, and those who did weren’t coming out to resources like food pantries for fear of being exposed to the virus.” Suddenly and across socioeconomic statuses, people found themselves all facing the same challenges. Hathaway and others working with the United Way of Genesee County rolled up their sleeves and focused on helping directly. “From experience, I can say that those of us who lead nonprofit work might spend a good majority of our time in the office, procuring funding, but now, we were all volunteers for each other,” she recalled. “This united us as never before. Especially at the beginning, we were all working together, bringing food to each other, swapping needed items and making sure all the needs in the community were being met.” This hasn’t been the only benefit. Hathaway has also been making new connections. “I delivered eggs and milk to two food pantries today that I didn’t even know existed a month ago, and they were right in the western part of our county in which I had been looking for ones!” she exclaimed. “While a lot of our efforts tend to be centrally located because Batavia is our city, we have now blanketed the entire county with services of some sort.”
Dedicated volunteers and generous community members have made these advances possible. “Many of the nonprofits which directly serve households have remained open during this time, even with volunteers on the brink of exhaustion from working so many additional hours,” shared Hathaway. She explained that those organizations listed on the UWGC website are those which are supported by its Community Impact Fund, and several others are supported through specially designated funds sent to the UWGC, as well. Increased need also requires increased donation. According to Hathaway, that hasn’t been a problem. “I have said it many times; we are like no other county that I have experienced,” she praised. “The community was immediately very responsive. If I expressed a need, it was quickly met. People were constantly asking what we needed and finding ways to get it to us.” The work has been much more physical than usual. “Before COVID-19, I worked a lot more with my brain, and I looked forward

Nonprofits like the Salvation Army have taken on new roles in the community. “The Salvation Army has been administering housing stability monies from United Way and has worked with Foodlink and the USDA to plan food distributions and to keep food pantries full,” Hathaway stated. “The community has rallied around them and other food pantries like that of Community Action.”
Tammy Hathaway, Executive Director of the United Way of Genesee County, during the United Way Day of Caring!
As Genesee County moves forward through the reopening process, the influx of needs it has been experiencing is expected to gradually subside, but for the UWGC, these needs are their reality. “My hope is that people remember our nonprofit groups and the good work they are doing now and realize that these are services many people still need year-round,” said Hathaway. “Many of these nonprofit groups rely on us, and the services many provide are critical. Please consider donating through workplace campaigns, individual pledges or even with necessary goods and volunteer service.” Looking back, Hathaway is deeply moved at all Genesee County communities have done. “I don’t know how to thank the community enough,” she said. “There has been just a remarkable outpouring of help and support from the people here, and I am so proud to be a part of these communities.”

to those days when I would get out into the community and work with my heart,” she shared. “Now, things are just the opposite. We are reacting to the need, and I haven’t found one of us in the nonprofit world that has said, “I do not have the time. I can’t fit that in.”

HORSESHOE SOLAR ENERGY LLC Livingston and Monroe Counties, New York NOTICE OF FILING OF APPLICATION Horseshoe Solar Energy LLC (Applicant or HSS), an affiliate of Invenergy Renewables LLC, is proposing to construct a solar photovoltaic electric generating facility (Facility) which will require a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) issued pursuant to Article 10 of the New York Public Service Law (PSL). On or about June 24, 2020, HSS will file an Application pursuant to PSL Section 164 and 16 NYCRR 1000.6 for a CECPN with the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment (Siting Board) authorizing the construction and operation of the Facility. The Application will be filed in Siting Board Case 18-F-0633.
Corporation (d/b/a National Grid) (National Grid). The POI is planned to be at National Grid’s 115-kV Golah Substation. As a contingency, HSS has acquired property rights along National Grid’s 115-kV Golah-Mumford transmission line, approximately two miles west of Golah Substation, to locate the POI. The physical configuration of the alternative POI would be a new 3-breaker ring bus (the “alternate POI Switchyard”) adjacent to the existing transmission line, which HSS would construct and transfer to National Grid upon completion of testing. The Collection Substation would be constructed adjacent to the alternate POI Switchyard. In the event the alternative POI is selected, the Facility Site will be adjusted accordingly to include the required interconnection facilities.
avian species; impacts to forested land and wetlands. Other potential impacts commonly attributed to utility-scale solar energy facilities include visual impacts and traffic during construction. The Applicant has designed the Facility layout to meet applicable standards in these areas and to minimize environmental impacts to the maximum extent practicable.
as needed. After hearings, the parties may brief their positions and the Hearing Examiner will issue a recommended decision upon which the Siting Board will base its decision. Article 10 requires that all proceedings on the Application, including a final decision by the Siting Board, be completed within 12 months of the date the Application is determined to be complete.
The Applicant will also submit a request for a Water Quality Certification (WQC) under Section 401 of the federal Clean Water Act, a prerequisite to obtaining a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the minor disturbance to federally regulated wetlands required to construct the Facility.
The record of this proceeding, including the Application, may be examined during normal business hours at the Offices of the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS) at 3 Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12223, and may also be viewed at the following public repositories:
Pursuant to the Article 10 process, the Applicant filed a Preliminary Scoping Statement (PSS) with the Siting Board on March 13, 2019. Thereafter, the public had an opportunity to submit comments on the PSS. Following the comment period, the Applicant prepared a summary of the material comments and submitted its reply on May 7, 2019. On May 9, 2019, a pre-application conference to consider intervenor funding requests was held. On June 6, 2019, HSS provided notice of consultations to discuss the contents of the Application to a broad list of potential stakeholders. Updated PSS Figures were filed on October 10, 2019. HSS hosted several telephone conferences between July 15, 2019 and November 6, 2019, to solicit input from stakeholders concerning the content of the Application. HSS is now ready to file an Application. The Application includes, among other things: an analysis of the environmental setting of the Facility; a description of the Facility including preliminary design drawings and related information; an assessment of potential land use, environmental and health impacts from construction and operation of the Facility; descriptions of the environmental, economic and other benefits of the Facility; results of studies conducted to prepare the Application, including preconstruction studies to assess potential impacts to avian and bat species; proposed measures to minimize environmental impacts; and a consideration of potential alternatives to the Facility. The Application also addresses consistency with State energy planning objectives, including climate change and renewable energy goals and potential concerns about public health and safety; terrestrial ecology, water resources and aquatic ecology; communications, transportation and utilities; cultural, historical and recreational resources; visual impacts, sound impacts; electric magnetic fields; and impacts on the statewide electrical system. The Article 10 regulations outlining the required contents of the Application can be found at 16 NYCRR 1001.1 et seq. This notice is being provided in accordance with 16 NYCRR 1000.7 and will be published at least three (3) days prior to the filing of the Application. A copy of the Application will be served on the Chief Executive Officer of each municipality in which any portion of the Facility is located, as well as those persons and agencies enumerated in 16 NYCRR 1000.6.

RENEW WELLNESS COUNSELING
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Now open and accepting new clients!
Rare Disease Causes Hard-to-Diagnose Rash ---
Cheryl Zinkievich, LCSW-R, CASAC is a licensed therapist with 32 years experience providing care in mental health and addiction. Counseling for issues related to trauma, addiction, anxiety, depression and major life changes.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter was diagnosed with lymphomatoid papulosis. It’s not a bad case, but it’s enough to make me worry. I know it’s rare for this to turn into cancer, but there is always a chance. Doctors often misdiagnose it, but thankfully I have the best pathologist in the world. My daughter is being treated with UVB light, which worked in the past, but now is not helping. I don’t want to do methotrexate. I worry about every dot that pops up on her, and if it doesn’t go away, I think the worst. -- M.W.M. ANSWER: Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease, most common in people in their 40s, but can happen in children and older adults as well. The cause is unknown, and although a virus is suspected, it hasn’t been found. It is not contagious. The rash of LyP is not specific and needs to be confirmed through biopsy. Spots are relatively large (but less than an inch), and usually red but with a white center that can turn black. The rash comes and goes. A skilled pathologist in combination with an experienced dermatologist is necessary to make the diagnosis. Adults are treated with methotrexate if the lesions are in a cosmetically important area, especially the face. UVA light is better studied than UVB light, especially in children, but an expert would be the most appropriate to recommend the best treatment. Your concern about cancer is understandable. Rates of associated cancer -- specifically, lymphoma, a blood and bone marrow cancer -- have been reported in 5% to 50% of people with LyP. Unfortunately, apart from people with a specific gene rearrangement, there’s no way yet known to predict who is likely to get lymphoma nor any way of preventing it. She will need to be vigilant. Fortunately, the lymphomas, if they do develop, are usually effectively treated. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently opened up some stored tuna that my son had saved for me. He loves to hunt his own food. When I ate it, I realized that when he had gone to Alaska, he had not only hunted tuna but also black bear. He had used the black bear grease to cure the tuna. I was mortified that he had used a protected animal to preserve his tuna. I reluctantly ate it anyway. Now, I am worried about my health. Will anything happen to me health-wise because I have eaten the grease from a black bear from Alaska? The bear was wild, so could it have had a disease, like rabies? I’m sure it has never been vaccinated. -- Anon. ANSWER: Black bears are hunted in many states, and although it is regulated (you need a license) in Alaska, they are not a protected species under the Endangered Species Act. Black bears are hunted for both sport and meat. The major health risk from consuming bear meat is trichinella, a muscle parasite. The meat must be heated to a high temperature to be sure of killing the parasite. Grease from the bear should not have trichinella risk. Another concern is rabies. Rabies is possible but rare in bears. I doubt it could be transmitted from grease, though, as rabies virus lives in nervous tissue, not fat.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA A KEY TO COMPASSIONATE CARE Alzheimer’s disease is one of the more prominent forms of dementia, but there are many additional types of dementia that also can cause both physical and cognitive alterations. Understanding the complexity of dementia can be beneficial to both dementia sufferers and their caregivers. Dementia is a general term used to define a decline in mental ability severe enough that it can interfere with daily life, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a disease but a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms. The words “senility” and “dementia” often are incorrectly used interchangeably. However, serious mental decline is not a normal part of aging.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring. Page 29
* Use a lint roller to remove dust from a lampshade with fabric that is flat but textured. If your lampshade has pleats, your best bet is a clean soft paintbrush. * “I have perfectly timed the fabric softener cycle on my washing machine. I set a timer for 23 minutes, and it’s just the right time to add liquid softener. Just saying that this has greatly enhanced the quality of my life, because my clothes feel softer and smell nice.” -- L.B. in Georgia * Here’s another laundry tip: “Can you believe I miss washing my daughter’s white softball pants because spring season was canceled? If you have a kid playing sports in white pants -- why? -- get a bar of Fels Naptha soap. You just rub it into the stained spots, and launder. It takes out grass and clay. It should be issued with the uniform for turf sports.” -- M. * A work from home, or work anywhere tip: If you are having trouble focusing, it might be because you are avoiding a difficult task. If there’s a dreaded task on your to-do list, tackle it first. Even if you can’t get it completed, you’ll make progress and it will make everything else seem easy by comparison.

GENERAL CONTRACTING
REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME
HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
One of the most popular methods of reducing radon concentrations involves a process called active soil depressurization, or ASD. This is a cost-effective and reliable technique to reduce radon that involves capturing the radon from beneath a building before it can enter the dwelling. A venting system draws the radon gas from the soil beneath the foundation and exhausts it outside of the building - far away from windows and other home openings. A continuously operating fan draws and discharges the radon outdoors. Radon that has infiltrated water supplies may require other removal methods. Such methods may require spraying water into a contained air space, introducing air bubbles into the water or storing water in a tank until the radon has decayed. Another method employs granular activated carbon (GAC) to remove radon from the water. The GAC method has been more widely tested and is more commonly used in individual homes, according to the EPA.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
Will lavender grow in and around small stones if it has some soil under it? Lavender is a sun worshiper, loves heat, and grows best in infertile, welldrained and slightly alkaline soil. Of course, lavender plants need soil, but will do just fine in an area where there are many small stones. Avoid heavy clay soil that does not drain well. Plant in the spring when danger of frost has passed, mixing some compost into the soil to get your plants off to a good start. Some lavender growers recommend putting a layer of crushed oyster shells or limestone
in the bottom of the planting hole to improve drainage and to increase the alkalinity of the soil. Also, some suggest mulching around lavender plants with pea sized gravel. The theme, good drainage is essential. Fertilize sparingly or you will get leaves at the expense of flowers. Lavender thrives in dry conditions so be careful not to overwater to prevent root rot. Also, dry heat helps to release lavender’s strong and wonderful fragrance and because of that aroma, deer generally stay away.
Garden stores generally stock two cultivars, ‘Hidcote’ with silvery foliage and deep purple flowers and ‘Munstead’ with green foliage and a violet or blue-purple flower. In the past few years, one called ‘SuperBlue’ has become more popular and is one that I find does very well here. It is a little shorter and heavier blooming cultivar than the two mentioned above. Linda Phillips, Master Gardener

Building you a stronger product. HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Work-related stress is an all too common problem in workplaces across the globe. According to the American Institute of Stress, 80 percent of workers report feeling stress on the job. Perhaps most troubling, nearly half of those people admit they need help in learning how to manage their stress. The American Psychological Association notes that stressful work environments can contribute to a host of physical problems, including headache, sleep disturbances and short temper. Chronic stress can produce more serious consequences such as high blood pressure while also weakening sufferers’ immune systems. Stress at the workplace also can make it difficult to concentrate, which in turn can compromise workers’ abilities to perform at the peak of their abilities. That supports the notion that stress is a problem for both employees and employers. As a result, finding ways to reduce that stress should be a team effort. Getting a handle on stress can be difficult. Since so many people trace their stress to the jobs they need to get by, they might think it’s impossible to address that stress without derailing their careers. But there are a handful of ways for professionals to get a handle on their stress without negatively affecting their careers. OATKA EDITION

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT (NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys. COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.”
Puzzle Answers This Week
Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive.
WELL-AGED WORDS
Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19;
Beach Fun Crossword Puzzle
• Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure;
1. Surfboard 2. Umbrella 3. Shell 4. (Down) Sunglasses 4. (Across) Sunscreen 5. Shovel 6. Crab 7. Towel 8. Sandcastle 9. Bucket
• 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia; • 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome.
