Be especially careful with power tools. Power tools can do a lot and they’re fun to use. But it’s important that DIYers do not let fun distract them from safety. The Power Tool Institute urges power tool users to wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. The PTI also advises users to make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and to inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. Much like it’s unsafe to overreach on a ladder, overreaching when using power tools increase the risk for mistakes, accidents and injuries.

While people often treat them as annuals, you can get amaryllis to rebloom next year.As flowers begin to fade,cut them off to prevent seed formation.Allowing seeds to form depletes energy resources and can lead to reduced blooming in subsequent years. Wait to remove the flower stalk until it begins to yellow. The flower stalk can photosynthesize (like leaves) and create energy/food stored for future flower growth.Leave the amaryllis leaves.As with other bulbs, like tulips and daffodils, the

leaves create energy/food so the plants can bloom again.

After your amaryllis is done blooming, place it in a bright indoor location (a window with southern exposure is best). Water regularly and fertilize monthly with an all-purpose houseplant or indoor plant fertilizer (follow the directions on the label).

Amaryllis can be taken outdoors after frost risk. Place them in an area that receives filtered sunlight at first, and then gradually move to where it will get a minimum of six hours of sunlight a day. Continue to water and fertilize as needed. In the fall, bring the amaryllis indoors before the first frost.

For amaryllis to rebloom, they need to be exposed to cool temperatures for a period. This can be done by forcing your plants into dormancy by placing them in a cool (45 to 55°F), dark location. The bulb needs a resting period of approximately 8-12 weeks before it can bloom again. During this time, do not water the plants. Once the leaves yellow, they can be removed.

While in this resting period, periodically inspect the bulbs. If they begin to grow, place them in a sunny window. If they don’tstarttogrowontheirown,forcenew growth by watering the soil thoroughly and putting them back in a warmer, sunnylocation.Whenbulbsshowsignsof growth, resume watering and fertilizing. Flowers will usually develop about 4-6 weeks after this dormant period.

According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. HOW TO KEEP OUTDOOR LIVING AREAS SAFE

Consider fencing. Fencing can make an outdoor living space more private and safe. Local laws may mandate that pools be enclosed with fencing, but even living spaces without pools can be made safer with the installation of a fence. Firepits are wildly popular, as more than 35 percent of homeowners who responded to the ICFA survey acknowledged their intention to purchase new firepits in 2021. Adding fencing around areas with firepits establishes boundaries, which is a must for homeowners with small children. Fencing also makes it harder for local wildlife to gain access to a property, which can decrease residents’ risk for tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I want my dog to be healthy and to use natural treatments as much as possible. So I don’t like giving her conventional, mainstream ea and tick chewables or making her wear a chemical-laced collar. And if I have to deworm her, I don’t want to give her medications that carry a risk of side e ects. But I’m also seeing a lot of products that are touted as “natural” that contain ingredients that are pretty questionable -- like garlic tablets for dogs! (Garlic is toxic to dogs and cats, if you’re wondering.) Can you let your readers know that it’s very important to read the labels and make sure a natural supplement is actually safe? -- Rebecca in Winchester, Virginia

DEAR REBECCA: You told them, and I thank you. Many “natural” ea and tick preventatives exist today, but reading the label is imperative.

Over-the-counter treatments and preventatives are not as tightly regulated as prescription medications given by veterinarians. ey may contain ingredients that are known to be harmful to dogs and cats -- like garlic, onion or tobacco. And they are generally less e ective at prevention, and o en completely ine ective for treating an active infestation.

ere’s a risk that over-the-counter and “natural” medications can make your pet as ill -- or even sicker -- than the vet’s recommended medication. Treating parasitic infestations in pets can be tough, and it’s important to balance the type of treatment with the health of the pet.

Byron’s Own ‘Uncle Sam’

For the last four Memorial Days, Byron has enjoyed a visit from ‘Uncle Sam’. Joe Riggi, age 80, an Air Force veteran and 40-yr resident of Byron, has been the town’s o cial Uncle Sam.

Riggi had the idea during the pandemic when Byron’s annual Memorial Day parade and almost everything else was cancelled. He borrowed the costume, hand-made by Laura Platt, and he decorated his lawnmower and wagon with red, white, and blue ribbon, patriotic banners, and of course, the American ag. He secured two large speakers into his red wagon and connected his computer pre-loaded with patriotic music and headed out midmorning. He drove up and down all the town streets blasting his music and waving to neighbors. He was a much-needed happy sight and a sign of normalcy during such a dark period when the world shut down!

In 2021, Riggi continued his one-man Memorial Day appearance. en in 2022, he joined in on the Memorial Day parade as well as the pandemic-postponed Byron Bicentennial parade in July. is year, though recovering from knee-replacement surgery, he decorated his lawnmower and wagon once again, purchased candy, donned the Uncle Sam costume and lined up for the parade. As someone who loves people, especially children, Riggi chose to be the nal entry in last week’s parade. Being at the end gave him plenty of time to weave his wagon from side to side along the parade route, giving a piece of candy to each and every child.

Becoming Uncle Sam for a day comes naturally to Riggi as he has always been patriotic. ough only age 17, the day a er graduating from LeRoy High School, he was on a plane headed to Texas, where he began his ve-year stint in the Air Force. Riggi was stationed in Limestone, Maine for his service. His base was just a few miles from the Canadian border, and his assignment was Strategic Air Command. ose ve years were very tense in US history. Between the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Cold War, Riggi’s job of keeping B-52 bombers and other aircra in tip-top shape was critical, as his was the closest base to Russia.

Christmas holidays, people found his lawn decorated with ten or more blow-up gures. On Halloween eve, Riggi set up a huge movie screen in the side yard of his old Victorian home. Riggi, along with his two wiener dogs all dressed in costumes, handed out candy while playing a scary movie for the children and their parents to enjoy.

Caring for his invalid wife precluded Riggi from being an active member of the town’s re department, though he found a way to assist by becoming Byron Fire Department’s sta photographer. He also has helped in many ways with department fundraisers. Riggi volunteered to head Byron’s monthly euchre tournament that donates proceeds to the Byron Summer Recreation Program.

In 2010, Pat Iamon, volunteer coordinator of Genesee County’s Adults with Developmental Disabilities Dances held in Byron, asked Riggi to volunteer to take photos for a very special event she planned. at was the rst-ever Stardust Ball, a prom complete with corsages and formal wear. Riggi agreed and happily arrived dressed in a suit with a camera and tripod under his arm. He enjoyed the event so much, he showed up with his camera every month until the dances ended in 2016.

Riggi is happiest when he serves others, but he’s always had the wish to go with his peers to Washington, DC with the Honor Flight program. Just last Sunday, while sitting with other veterans at the Geneseo Air Show, Riggi was put on that waiting list. He does not know when the trip will happen, but until then and once his knee is completely healed, you can nd him every Tuesday and ursday mornings volunteering at Batavia’s VA Hospital. It’s hard to keep a good man down!

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST

(NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.

Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.

While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating,the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material.This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim.

Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust.

In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials.

Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadiantravelersabouttodepart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percentisconsideredacceptable.

WHAT IS A WILL?

The online financial resource Investopedia notes that wills are legally enforceable documents that dictate how people want their affairs handled and assets allocated in the wake of their deaths.

Wills should include a host of information, including who a person wants to assume guardianship of their minor-aged children should they pass away. This is especially important information to include in a will, as surviving relatives may have to go to court to contest guardianship if parents do not dictate who they want to serve as guardians in their wills.

Possible Heart Disease Symptoms Are Written Off Due to Weight

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been experiencing pain in my chest, dizziness and shortness of breath on exertion. The chest pain lasts for a few hours. At one point, it was so bad that I couldn’t walk a hundred feet, had to use a cane and severely limit my physical activity. I’ve been to the doctor about this before. They take an EKG, which comes back normal, so they chalk it up to anxiety, then tell me I’m fat. (I am not unaware that I’m fat, but even when I was doing intense martial arts twice a week, I couldn’t lose the weight. And my physical therapist told me not to do yoga.)

If it makes a difference, I’m also a Type 2 diabetic and have fibromyalgia as well as PTSD. This is not the only issue that doctors have refused to treat because they decide to blame it all on my weight. My diabetes went unchecked for a while because my doctor only told me to lose weight, instead of ordering blood tests when I complained about the symptoms. When these symptoms happen, my friends tell me to go to the doctor, but they don’t do anything to change the situation. Why should I pay over $1,000 and waste a few hours for an urgent care visit and an EKG only to get told that I’m fat and anxious, when I can cover my chest with stickers, play on my phone and tell myself I’m fat at home for free? Who’s right, me or my friends? -- S.T.

ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear how poorly you are being treated. I have heard from many people that doctors do not take symptoms seriously in people who are overweight or obese. (There is strong evidence that this is true, and that women and people of color are also treated worse systemically. People with any mental health issue, such as anxiety or PTSD, are often disbelieved.)

While I understand that you are frustrated, your symptoms are very concerning. Particularly if you are over 50, they are highly suggestive of heart disease -- especially in a person with diabetes, which increases risk of heart disease. Given your poor experience, how much you are paying and your PTSD, I can absolutely understand why you are reluctant to go. However, you deserve to get good care, and I believe you will be able to find a doctor who can treat you well and not automatically write off any complaint due to your weight and anxiety. I’d recommend you be completely honest about your concerns.

When I have a patient with multiple ER or acute care visits for possible heart disease, I often recommend a more definitive test than an EKG and blood testing, which is the usual acute care evaluation when looking for damage to the heart muscle. This may be a coronary CT angiogram, which is highly sensitive and specific. (The weight limit for this test depends on the scanner, but is typically 450 pounds.)

If you have blockages in your heart causing your recurrent symptoms, it needs to be treated to prevent a heart attack. If blockages aren’t the cause, the EKGs usually aren’t helpful, and you’ll need a different type of evaluation to find out where these symptoms are coming from.

Likewise, damage, decay, or infection in a tooth can cause chronic sinusitis because the infection in the tooth can spread to the sinuses. Consult with both your doctor and dentist if you are experiencing chronic sinus infections to learn if the cause is dental or otherwise.

Shame on man who cussed out preschool child

On Saturday afternoon, 6/17/23, shame on the man who abruptly stopped his blue 4 door sedan in [a parking lot] across from [fast food restaurant] to cuss out a child. The man exited his car, opened the driver side rear door to shout obscenities at what appeared to be a pre-schooler strapped into a car seat in the back. The man then grabbed the child’s drink and threw it on the ground. Then he called the child a disgusting name, slammed the door, and proceeded to take off in the car at about 50 mph in the mall lot. Shame on you as an adult to act like that to anyone, much less a child. Still shocked by this unacceptable behavior! :O

Ridiculously Rough Railroad Tracks

Who’s responsible for repairing rough railroad tracks… the railroad, the town, the county? This well traveled rural road has tracks in front of the railroad and you have to just about stop to TRY to save your vehicle from the wear and tear. Recently, other tracks around this area were repaired and they’re smooth sailing now. Somehow this set was skipped over, and in my opinion, these were worse than the others. Anybody know whose responsibility it is for the repair?
