EXPERT ADVICE FOR COLLEGE-BOUND GRADS
This is Ash! He is an F5 Savannah cat. He is about 6 months old in this picture. He enjoys treats and lovin’ and wrestling and playing with our other Savannah Ari. He also enjoys playing fetch and going for walks. Ash turns heads wherever he goes! He is a big tall boy and has legs for days! (Ash crossed the rainbow bridge before we had a chance to feature him, however his mom was very happy to allow us to share him and keep his memory alive.)

“There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them…” ~ Clare Boothe Luce Children face countless “hopeless” situations. Tying a shoelace, for example, seems totally impossible to the tiny tot who has not yet mastered the art. Adults, who have gone through this stage themselves, will smile and realize that soon the solution will be found and the “hopeless” situation resolved. The frightening situations that we all must face from time to time may seem to be utterly hopeless. If we despair and stop trying, there is no hope. If we persist, hoping for an answer, our problems will prove to be far from hopeless. You can be sure that your wishes will be followed by making arrangements for your funeral service in advance of need. All details will be handled exactly as you specify. Ask our staff about this.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Racoon eyes may be a side effect of forgetting to remove mascara and other eye makeup before retiring for bed. In such instances, dark eye circles are easily remedied with cleaning pads. For those whose dark circles can’t be swept away with soap and water, dark, puffy eyes can be a cause for embarrassment or concern. Dark circles under the eyes may be a byproduct of various circumstances. Getting to the root of the problem can help women (and men) look more awake and fresh.

WISE CHOICE The third molars (commonly referred to as “wisdom teeth”) are the last teeth to erupt, usually between the ages of 17 and 25 years. Where there is insufficient room for them to emerge, wisdom teeth may either remain below the gum line or not grow in properly. Wisdom teeth usually become “impacted” when the jaws are not large enough to accommodate all the teeth that are growing in. At this point, a decision must be made in consultation with the dentist to extract the wisdom teeth. Extraction is recommended if impacted, partially emerged, crooked, or rotated wisdom teeth cause pain, infections, and swelling. Wisdom teeth may also have to be extracted to avoid damage to adjacent teeth. Whether it involves wisdom teeth, cosmetic work, simple fillings, or

SUMMER FUN $AVINGS!
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Don’t Drink Wine for Health Reasons
Join The Fun!
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: As a winemaker, I get my daily (small) dose of resveratrol through red wine. I drink about a half bottle daily. But I also take resveratrol supplements. What is the latest evidence as to the health benefits of this natural polyphenol? Am I ingesting too much? -- G.G. ANSWER: Resveratrol is a substance found in red wine, coming from grape skins. One study in rats showed that it improved lifespan, and many people were interested in it. However, the dose of red wine needed to duplicate the study would be about 1,000 liters daily for a human; worse, a trial of resveratrol (in people with multiple myeloma) showed no benefit, and five of the 24 subjects developed kidney failure (it was not clear whether the myeloma or the resveratrol was responsible for the kidney damage. Also, the dose used was 5 grams, which is 10 to 20 times the size of the usual supplement). A trial in Alzheimer’s disease patients was too short to prove benefit but did seem to show increased brain volume. A 2016 review shows that at high doses, it lowers blood pressure (which often is raised by alcohol) and cholesterol. For that reason, resveratrol still holds promise, but it’s too early to recommend as a supplement. It’s not the resveratrol I’m worried about your getting too much of; it’s alcohol. A half a bottle of wine (assuming average alcohol content, which varies a little) for an average-size man is two and a half glasses, which contains alcohol that is over the level of most recommendations (one glass for women, two for men, with food). For some people, wine enhances pleasure in life when taken moderately, and that’s the only reason it should be consumed. Alcohol should not be taken for health reasons.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I think I may have herpes, but I’m not sure. What are the symptoms of the virus? When I go to the doctor, what do I say? When I was there last time, I was given a urine test for STDs, which was negative, but now I urinate a lot and have a bump on my penis. -- M.G. ANSWER: When we are discussing herpes as a sexually transmitted disease, we usually refer to herpes simplex virus type 2. Even though other herpes viruses can be transmitted sexually, HSV-2 is the most prevalent, with approximately 50 million people in the U.S. infected. HSV-2 usually is asymptomatic, but in both men and women it can be associated with periodic outbreaks of blisters, classically filled with clear fluid and painful. During this time, the virus can be accurately identified by a laboratory. However, it is often not a classic appearance, and it’s wise to consider the diagnosis of HSV for any genital lesion. The quality of the herpes blood test has improved in recent years, and it is a good way to make the diagnosis in someone who doesn’t have a lesion at the time they see the doctor. Two other STDs -- gonorrhea and chlamydia -- can be diagnosed using a urine test, but not HSV. When you go to the doctor, ask for a blood test to rule out herpes definitively. Urinating a lot is not a usual symptom for STDs, but painful or uncomfortable urination is.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Homeowners should not assume they know how to use all of the tools necessary to maintain lush lawns and bountiful gardens. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of manual and motorized equipment by reading the owner’s manual thoroughly, making special note of recommended safety guidelines. Take some time to locate the power buttons and other parts by comparing them to illustrations in the guide. Once you feel comfortable handling the equipment, then you can begin to use it. Page 21

HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR Many people enjoy opening their homes to friends or family. In fact, according to the National Eating Trends survey and custom research by the NPD group, in 2016 the average person ate 38 meals at other people’s homes. Knowing how to cook, set the mood and entertain is increasingly important for many homeowners. Installing and outfitting a home bar can provide guests with the features of a night out, only without the crowds or bar tabs that come at the end of the night. A home bar is a place where hosts and their guests can gather and enjoy great conversation. Such a spot also can serve as a neighborhood hangout - a smart choice for those who want to indulge safely and not have to drive home afterward. Creating a home bar need not be a difficult project. By investing in basic equipment, stocking up on preferred liquors and gaining some mixology expertise, hosts can impress and entertain their guests.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t be surprised if, in spite of your well-made plans, something goes awry. But don’t worry. Your knowledge of the facts plus your Arian charm will help you work it out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A personal relationship seems to be demanding more than you feel you’re able to give. Best advice: Confront the issue. You could find the situation surprisingly easy to work through. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Resist being pressured into meeting your self-imposed deadline. This is important if you really feel that taking more time to finish a project could save time in the long run. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A vacation choice seems less interesting than when you first made it. Could it be a matter of the place or the people going with you? Find out before you consider a change of plans. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Someone might be overriding your Leonine logic to get you to agree to “favors” that you would normally avoid. Take a new look at what you’ve been asked to do and see if you’ve been misled. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Try to keep that emerging “judgmental” aspect in check this week. Too many critiques on relatively unimportant issues could create a lot of negative bounce-back reactions. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Facing unpleasant facts about an associate isn’t easy. But ignoring them isn’t wise. Ask a trusted (and neutral) friend to help guide you on what to do and how you might do it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A shift in opinion regarding a workplace situation could go a long way in vindicating the stand you’ve taken. But be aware that a satisfactory resolution could still be a long way off. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It’s not like you to choose the easy way rather than the right way to do things. So, follow your instincts and feel assured they will lead you to the right decision. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Hold off on making a personal commitment until you find out what it really entails and whose interests are actually involved. There could be hidden facts you need to know. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new friend offers an unexpected opportunity that could lead to a career change. Check it out carefully and consider getting an assessment from someone familiar with this field. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A surprising discovery leads to mixed reactions from those involved in the “revelation.” But as you come to appreciate the truth, you’ll be able to come to terms with your feelings. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of travel helps you appreciate the wonders of the world. You would find a satisfying career in any travelrelated industry. c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 30, 1859, Emile Blondin becomes the first daredevil to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. The feat was witnessed by some 5,000 spectators. Blondin wore pink tights and a yellow tunic, and carried a balancing pole. * On June 26, 1917, during World War I, the first 14,000 U.S. infantry troops land in France. By the war's end on Nov. 11, 1918, more than 2 million American soldiers had served on the battlefields of Western Europe, and more than 50,000 lost their lives. * On June 25, 1950, in one of the greatest soccer upsets of all time, an American team composed largely of amateurs defeats its more polished English opponents, 1-0, at the World Cup in Brazil. Assembled just days before the match, the U.S. team included a dishwasher, two mailmen, a teacher and a mill worker.

Make Health A Family Reunion Affair: Talk With Your Family About Kidney Health (NAPS)—Family reunions are a great way to reconnect with loved ones, celebrate your family’s heritage and make new memories. Family reunions are also an opportunity to talk about family health history. You may have family members who have diabetes, high blood pressure or both. These are conditions that often run in families and are risk factors for kidney disease. Kidney disease affects African Americans more than other groups. That’s why it’s important to talk to your family about risk factors for kidney disease, how to get tested and how kidney disease can be treated. Kidney disease is a serious and common health problem, affecting an estimated 30 million adults in the United States. Kidney disease means your kidneys are damaged and can’t filter blood the way they should. Kidney disease can often get worse over time and may lead to kidney failure. If your kidneys fail, you will need dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain your health. The sooner you know about your family history of kidney disease, the sooner you can make changes to help protect your kidneys. To get you started talking with your family about kidney health, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), a part of the National Institutes of Health, created the Family Reunion Health Guide. This guide offers basic information about kidney disease and suggests approaches you can take to connect with your family about kidney health. You can use this guide to help make kidney health a family reunion affair. Information in the guide includes materials and tips to help you: Talk With Your Family About the Risk Factors for Kidney Disease Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney disease. You are also at risk if you have a family history of kidney failure or have heart disease. The Family Reunion Health Guide can help you talk with your family about kidney disease and its connection to diabetes, high blood pressure and other risk factors. Encourage Family Members at Risk for Kidney Disease to Get Tested Many people with kidney disease don’t know they have the disease until their kidneys begin to fail. This is because you can have kidney disease without any symptoms. The good news is that when kidney disease is found early, there are ways to protect your kidneys by managing your blood pressure, eating a healthy diet and being active. There is no cure for kidney failure, but dialysis or a kidney transplant can help you live longer and feel better. The sooner you find out you have kidney disease, the sooner you can take steps to prevent more serious health problems. This is why it’s important to talk with your family about the need to get tested. Make a Family Commitment to Kidney Health You can reduce your risk for developing kidney disease by taking steps to live a healthy lifestyle. Diagnosing and treating the disease early can slow or prevent the progression of kidney disease. The Family Reunion Health Guide shares ideas for how you can encourage family members to take steps to protect their kidney health. By being your family’s kidney health champion, you can help ensure that your family enjoys many more reunions to come. Learn More For more information about kidney disease, kidney failure, diabetes, high blood pressure and more, or to access the Family Reunion Health Guide, visit the NIDDK website at www.niddk.nih.gov. A CLEAN CAR IS MONEY IN THE BANK (NAPSI)—Purchasing a new car is a major financial investment. Keeping it clean can be an easy and inexpensive way to protect its resale and trade-in value. “Many motorists procrastinate when it comes to cleaning their vehicles,” said Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Whether you do it yourself or have it cleaned professionally, proactively keeping your car clean on the outside and tidy on the inside will pay big dividends when it comes to maintaining your vehicle’s value over time.” The Car Care Council suggests five simple steps to keep a vehicle clean, helping protect it from the elements and preserve its value. • Declutter—Start the cleaning process by removing excess clutter from inside the car as it can be distracting and hazardous, especially when debris finds its way near the gas and brake pedals. Don’t forget to clear out items that have accumulated in the trunk as they can add extra weight and reduce fuel efficiency. • Clean the Interior—The next step is to thoroughly clean the interior, wash the windows, and clean and install floor mats. Be sure to vacuum on a regular basis. A clean and orderly interior lets you spot issues in the cabin so you can get them repaired before they get worse. • Wash the Exterior—Give your car a good wash from top to bottom using products specifically made for automobiles. Always clean the tires and wheels before washing the body and don’t use the same washing mitt or cloth for both. • Wax Twice a Year—Waxing not only protects a vehicle’s finish, it makes subsequent washing easier. Before proceeding, make sure there are no foreign particles on the paint. It’s important to note that waxing should be done in the shade, not direct sunlight.
ALABAMA HOLLEY FARM
• Fix Chips—If you find minor paint damage, cover the paint chips as quickly as possible to prevent further damage. For a quick fix until you can get paint touch-up supplies, dab a little clear nail polish on the scratch. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME
VILLAGE CENTRE APTS.
(NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time.
222 Main Street Brockport, NY 14420
1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.
Is taking applications for their waiting list for one bedroom Apartments for Seniors (62 & over) or disabled regardless of age.
2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item.
Rent based on income, one year lease, security deposit required, pets welcome with restrictions, off street parking, laundry facilities on-site, full size stove and refrigerator.
3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. Wheelchair Accessible
4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

Beat the heat during a summer wedding Tailor the reception menu to the weather. A large, heavy meal may not be what guests are hoping for when temperatures are especially hot. In such situations, provide some cool, light fare, such as chilled salads or cold soups, as first courses. Sorbet can be a cool palate cleanser, and grilled meats and vegetables will make for a satisfying, light main course. Ice cream cake may be a decadent option in lieu of more traditional wedding cake.

GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Vacation locally. Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not fly, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that automobiles and airplanes produce relatively similar amounts of carbon dioxide per gallon, airplanes burn considerably more fuel than cars, thanks in large part to the considerable amount of fuel planes burn on the runway. By vacationing locally, outdoor enthusiasts can reduce their reliance on airplanes, thereby reducing the effects those airplanes have on the environment.

The Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum info@spencerportmuseum.org • (585) 352-0942 The Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum, located in Spencerport, NY, welcomes Transportation and Erie Canal enthusiasts. In the early 2000s, the building was completely restored to its original state by a large group of dedicated volunteers, and museum volunteers remain absolutely critical. The Museum is able to remain open 7 days a week because of their dedication, greeting over 3,500 visitors each year from all over the United States and even from other countries! The Museum also acts as a welcome center for the Erie Canal boaters, cyclists and hikers. Now, more opportunities to volunteer are being made available. Be a part of this group of volunteers who share the local history with the growing number of visitors that stop in at the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Leave work behind. The United States is one of the few countries that does not guarantee paid days off. The Center for Economic and Policy Research says one in four working Americans do not get paid time off. The employment site Glassdoor notes that among those who do get paid vacations, 75 percent of employees chose not to use all of their time in 2013. By comparison, Canadians get an average of 19 days of vacation time per year. Stress about making up work or falling behind makes some professionals worry about using their vacation time, and those who do travel may stay connected to the office in some shape or form. Splitting time between leisure and work responsibilities on a vacation can be taxing and take away from the time you need to relax and recharge. Cut work ties and immerse yourself in the vacation experience.

POLLINATOR HEALTH 101: ‘SCHOOLING’ STUDENTS THROUGH HANDS-ON LEARNING (NAPSI)—While schools continue to teach reading, writing and arithmetic, the blueprint for educators is shifting as teachers notice the value of handson science education. Many schools are bringing science to their own backyards—literally—by developing gardens and pollinator plots, where students can learn about agriculture’s hardest-working insects: pollinators.
8322 Park Rd., Batavia
SERVER • BARTENDER HOST • CURBSIDE • BUS Apply in person.
Sowing Seeds for Bees Learning about bees’ contribution to the food system in the classroom is certainly important; however, there’s no substitute for seeing these incredible insects in action. One example is Route 40 Elementary School in Maryland, where students are creating a garden maze. For this project, they’ll learn how to budget, oversee seed selection and use their math skills to design the maze. Students at Cole Valley Christian Schools (CVCS) in Idaho have learned all about pollinators and the structure and function of plants that support them in the classroom. They’ll now take those learnings one step further by establishing a garden on campus to increase pollinator activity in the area. “Students will be so engrossed in planting, observing and engineering that they won’t know they are even learning,” said Julie Morgan, the STEM coordinator with CVCS. Pollinators Postgrad Practical education shouldn’t stop after high school. Students at California’s Mills College are planting a “green screen” along a roadside fence next to a local dog park and farm; they’ll also maintain the area and act as “Bee Ambassadors” in the community, promoting sustainable agricultural practices that improve pollinator health. By transforming a patch of bare ground into a thriving plant community, the Mississippi Entomological Museum at Mississippi State University will also showcase the importance of diverse forage. Assistant Research Professor JoVonn Hill hopes this project will increase awareness of Black Belt prairies and highlight their importance to local pollinators. Plant Wildflowers to “Bee” Helpful Want to help? You can begin by planting pollinator-attractant wildflowers of your own. To bring pollinator education to a school or community near you, do what these schools did: Apply for a Bayer Feed a Bee forage grant. The program has already reached approximately 140 projects in 47 states and Washington, D.C. Learn More: You can check out the newest grantees and learn how you can apply at www.FeedABee.com.

THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put a professional purpose. Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process.
