HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS
Encourage activism. Outdoors enthusiasts who want to protect theirbelovedparkscanencourage activism in their communities. Work with park officials to organize trash pickup days at the park or organize activities for school-aged youngsters that teach them the importance of conservation and respecting the environment.
Protect Your Mobile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) Mobile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disconcerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012.
When a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to more than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity.
The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. While identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like going through trash and stealing wallets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

PREVENT CO POISONING
(NAPSI)—Each year, more than 400 people die from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and more than 20,000 visit the emergency room. CO poisoning can be prevented with a few precautions:
What To Do
• Never use portable electric generators, charcoal grills or other similar devices inside your home, garage or in any confined area that can let carbonmonoxidecollect.
• Have your chimney, fireplace and woodstoves inspected beforeeveryheatingseason.
• Turn off space heaters before leavingaroomorgoingtosleep.
• Never run your car engine for more than a few moments in a garage, even if the door to the outside is open. Fumes can buildupquicklyandcanspread tothelivingareaofyourhome.
• Look for clues that home appliances may be malfunctioning. Common indicators include decreased hot water supply, soot on appliances, moisture inside windows, and furnaces not heatingproperly.
• Install at least one carbon monoxide detector, connected to a monitoring center that operates 24/7, on every level of your home. Real protection comesfromADT—keepingyour family safe from poisonous CO gas that can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and possibly deathifundetected.

CREATING A CHEF-INSPIRED KITCHEN
(NAPSI) — Cooking like a professional doesn’t have to mean a kitchen full of expensive gadgets, but you do want one where prepping, cooking and cleaning is seamless and comfortable. That requires considering design details that enhance the workflow. Consider these helpful hints:
Smart Storage
Items that are used frequently should be kept together and conveniently at hand. Use hooks, magnets and utensil holders to keep favorite knives, pot lids, spatulas and the like within easy reach.A lazy Susan can help spices stay properly sorted.
Bright Ideas For Lighting
Choose lighting that maximizes cooking efficiency and comfort. Task lighting should include overhead stove lights and under-cabinet fixtures so cooking and food prep area are properly lit. For dining, overhead chandeliers may be best.
Everything — Especially The Kitchen Sink
While shiny appliances, countertops and beautiful backsplashes may get all the attention, the sink and its surrounding area are the most used in the kitchen and deserve special consideration.
Position the sink with as much prep space around it as possible. For the sink itself, look for efficiency and functionality. For example, the new BLANCO IKON Apron 33” 1 3/4 sink is designed with a convenient low divide that makes it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets. Another advantage of its apron front design is that it’s installed further forward with no countertop. This means less strain on cooks and dishwashers because they don’t have to lean over as much. What’s more, it’s made with nonporous, easy-to-clean Silgranit composite patented material and comes in eight trending colors.
Optional accessories help enhance the workflow and include a floating grid that provides an extra level within the sink, to further ease the strain of handling heavy pots. A floating cutting board fits right on top of the sink to instantly create more workspace.
Faucets To Favor
Faucets designed with a higher arc and a pulldown spray head make rinsing dishes, filling pots and cleaning the sink faster and simpler. The new BLANCO RIVANA collection includes semi-pro, high arc with pulldown and bar faucet options. A coordinating soap dispenser is also available. The convenient Solenta Senso works hands-free. “Handy” when your hands are full—or very dirty.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.
Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.
Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE
Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped.
HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts.
One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME
Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the sameresults, effortstoreduceradonlevelsarenecessary.
Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors whoareexperiencedinradonreductionprocedures.Homescanbefixed, butsomeinstancesmaybebestlefttotheprofessionals.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE
Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. New college students have to make many adjustments upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn’t around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their freshman year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves.

Here’s a tip
• Assorted hardware seems to collect in big, random piles in our tiny workshop. Nails, screws and bolts of all sizes are mixed together, tossed on the bench when a project is complete. Every so o en, the kids and I make a game of sorting and organizing it using a mu n pan. It’s easy to sort by size and type!
• “A er cleaning my paintbrushes recently, I decided to hang them from the clothesline to dry. It worked great, as the bristles were nice and so when they were dry. I think it helped to hang straight down.” -- O.C. in Washington
• Before you start a painting project and head to the hardware store, determine what you might need and raid your recycling bin for containers.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD
Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus.
The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.
PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
Adopting a “War Dog”
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I just watched an older movie about a military dog, called “Max.” How can I adopt a dog like that? -- T.T. via email
DEAR T.T.: While “Max” is a compelling movie, adopting a former military working dog takes a fair amount of research on your part, and the ability to care for dogs that have high energy and need plenty of attention and continuing training. All military dog adoptions are handled through the Department of Defense Military Working Dog Adoption Program at Lackland AFB in Texas.
Dogs eligible for adoption were retired due to age, injury or sickness. Not all dogs saw combat. Some worked in national security, while others were trained as working dogs but did not meet the standards for military service.
Be prepared for a long wait a er submitting the application -- up to a year or more. First priority for adoption goes to law-enforcement agencies, if the dog is still t for duty. If not, the dog’s handler can adopt it. Only a er that do dogs become available for adoption to civilians. Some dogs, sadly, are not adoptable due to temperament or severe injuries.
In addition to patience, be aware that you don’t have control over what type of dog is made available; although you can state your preference on the application. Be prepared for some pre-adoption expenses as well: If selected to adopt a MWD, you’ll need to travel to where the dog is being kept (most likely, Lackland) at least twice -- once to be interviewed and meet the dog, and again to pick it up if your application is approved.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.
DID YOU KNOW? Being overweight or obese is a serious medical condition that can affect people of all ages. Carrying around too many pounds can be especially problematic for children because it may put them on the path to health problems that once generally only affected adults. Such issues include diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The Mayo Clinic advises that childhood obesity can contribute to poor self-esteem and depression. Fortunately, improving kids’ eating habits, such as ensuring kids eat nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, and increasing physical activity are two ways to help kids maintain healthy weights. Parents who have concerns about their children’s weight should consult with a pediatrician, who may recommend a body mass index test.

is amazing. You are all a good example of God’s love & generosity!
Good for Mamma G’s Restaurant
A shout-out to Mamma G’s Restaurant in Henrietta: I ordered food to go for three and they got one order wrong, including forgetting the dessert. When I phoned to see if it could be corrected, they not only obliged cheerfully, but also provided the replacement food completely for free, which included a main course. If only more businesses engaged in these practices! We all make mistakes, but these folks were bent on correcting their error, and doing it pleasantly and promptly. Thanks, Mamma G’s - great management!
Yard Sale Thief
On July 8th we were having a neighborly yard sale in [local town]. Around noon we had a torrential downpour. I had tarped two tables with items that could not get wet. Other items were on another table and the ground which could get wet. We went into the house to get out of the rain. My wife had looked out the window and said a woman who had a black SUV was putting a gas can in her car. Then she said I think she is putting it back on the ground. After the rain stopped we went out to find out that over $150.00 worth of items were stolen. I never expected this at a yard sale. Yes, I should have kept watch over it continuously.
Dogs at music in the park
We are senior citizens and enjoy going to listen to the music in the park. We really don’t know why people insist on bringing their dogs. There are so many of us who go to listen to the music, not watch their dogs. It is very annoying. Please people, leave you mutts home.
Loud popping mufflers
Lately I have been exposed to this new theory that a “popping,” like a shot gun, muffler is cool. It scares me when I’m in my yard. Sounds like a drive-by out here in God’s country. I can only imagine what that back pressure is doing internally to your engine. Backfires are not cool. Why would you want everyone noticing you? I sure hope you don’t make any bad choices, bc you would be easily identified. Motorcycles seem much louder lately also, and there’s a generation that isn’t sure when and how to shift. Again, why draw attention to your ignorance? I guess, don’t worry, mommy will buy you another one if you ruin it. Haha.

Price things reasonably
It’s tempting to overprice items, butagoodruleofthumbistomark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distantsecond.

Behind the Scenes at Rochester Freecycle

say you have an item you no longer want, but it’s too good to toss out. Garage sale? Way too busy. Donate it to a charitable group? Set it at the end of the driveway with a big sign that says FREE? Or give it away on the Freecycle Network.
According to their website, “ e Freecycle Network® is made up of more than 5,000 local town groups with over 9 million members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonpro t movement of people who are giving (and getting) stu for free in their own towns and keeping good stu out of land lls. Membership is free, and everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.”
Meet Patti, one of the Rochester Freecycle Group moderators. Patti, how would you brie y describe the Rochester Freecycle Group?
e Rochester NY Freecycle group is one of the 5,357 worldwide Freecycle groups where our 4,750 + members (out of 10,765,511 worldwide) o er and request still usable items to keep them out of land lls.
How do people meet to give or receive an item?
ere are a few options. Members can come to your home, meet up at a location convenient to both parties, or if you feel particularly magnanimous, you can o er to drop the item o !
Is this a ‘quid pro quo’ arrangement? Do I have to give you one thing in exchange for another?
Not at all! While there are a few guidelines having to do with how o en you request a speci c item, there are no quali cations such as making your rst post an o er, balancing the number of wanted vs o er posts, etc. In fact, there is no borrowing, swapping/trading unless you have you own “friend’s circle.”
What can, or cannot, be o ered via Freecycle?
KEEP IT FREE, LEGAL & APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES. is means, for example:
* No tobacco, rearms or other weapons, profane or sexual content, alcohol;
*Nomedicationsofanykind,includingallRxandOTCmedicines, vitamins, creams, lotions, including some medical equipment and supplies ;
* Personal care items must be unopened;
* Food must be unopened;
* No yard sales, Curb Alerts or o ering or requesting money for ANY reason;
* No animal posting; What are the oddest or most unusual items you’ve seen on the Rochester Freecycle group?
We had an “o er” post where someone was giving away an old porch because they were getting a new one. e catch was
that the person would have to dismantle the concrete base and steps and remove them from the property. We did not allow it because of the “strings attached.”
An ‘honorable mention’ goes to a man that asked for extralarge false teeth to chew through his wife’s bad cooking, and a replacement hearing aid with an on and o switch because his current one doesn’t allow him to shut it o and all his wife does is complain all day long.
Is it di cult to join?
Not at all. Signup is found at https://www.freecycle.org/signup. Once there, you enter a user name, email, and password. We ask that user names be “family friendly.” en you look for town groups you would like to join and click “Join is Group.” Some groups prefer to approve new members and others let you join immediately but o en put you on moderation until you have posted without any issues.
What do you want everyone to know about Freecycle and why should they join?
Freecycle is a nice way to give back to the community. It gives those asking for items a place to post without judgment for the most part. ose who o er items are o en “paying it forward.” Yes, some members are looking for someone else to get rid of their junk for them, but this is Rochester; those “useless items” have been turned into pieces of art and grace our city and suburbs with beauty. During Covid, I received quite a few messages asking me please to reopen for posting. ese messages were from members who wanted to make sure everyone had what they needed to get through the long pandemic isolation. I love this group!

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER
Avoid idling.Idling was once advised to warm up vehicles so they did not stall once they leave the driveway and hit the open road. However, that stalling occurred when cold carburetorscouldnotgettheappropriatemixofairandfuelintheengine.Butcarburetors have long since been replaced by electronic fuel injection systems, negating the need to warm up a vehicle to avoid stalling. The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy note that modern engines will warm up by being driven and urge driverstoavoidwarminguptheircarsformorethan30seconds.

Maintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride
Balancing tires involves equalizing the weight of the combined tire and wheel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the wheel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise weight distribution is nearly impossible without a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires wobble, causing noticeable vibrations.
Mechanics will test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine will spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting weights will be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of weight. Lead weights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead.

LEROY 768-7959
Tires that are not balanced will not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven wear.
Properly maintained headlights vastly improve driver safety
Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be replaced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs when replacing them. Industry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every two years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking with the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor weather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of night vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the standard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam pattern that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.
STELLA COLLISION
Sudden car trouble is something no driver wants to experience, but many a driver has been driving down the highway only to feel his or her vehicle start to sputter. Such sputtering might indicate a car is running low on fuel, or it could be a sign of something more serious that requires motorists to think as quickly and safely as possible. When car trouble strikes while a vehicle is on the road, the first thing many drivers do is check their fuel gauges. A car that runs out of gas is certainly inconvenient, but if you can pull over to the shoulder or make it to the nearest filling station, then this unfortunate situation can be remedied rather easily. But when a car’s tank is full and it is still showing signs of trouble, drivers must take steps to protect themselves, their passengers and their vehicles.

Always practice summer sun safety
When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.
Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?
HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the rst few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the brous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.
• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.
• We also o er surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Doctors Won’t Prescribe Hormone Therapy to Woman Over 60
DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recently published column, you stated, “As always, the decision belongs to the patient,” while addressing a concern about the benefits and risks of stopping a statin drug. Oh, really? Then, why is it that, once I turned 60, not a single doctor will prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to stop my debilitating post-menopausal symptoms? After suffering from menopausal symptoms starting at age 42, I was finally prescribed HRT at age 57. What relief I felt, as it was the only remedy to alleviate my hot flashes, weight gain, lack of sleep and vaginal dryness.
Once I hit 60, I was ordered to stop HRT, and no one since will prescribe it for me now. I am 66, suffer from hot flashes daily and have my sleep interrupted at least five times a night with terrible night sweats. I have tried just about every over-the-counter offering with zero effectiveness.
I will gladly trade the greater risk of heart attack and stroke, and the possible shorter life span, for relief from symptoms that affect my daily quality of life. Clearly, the choice is not mine, because if I had a choice, I would ask for continued prescriptions of HRT to give me relief. Why don’t I have that choice as a patient? -- R.M.T.
ANSWER: A patient always has the right to refuse a treatment recommended from a physician. However, the physician has the obligation to consider the risks and benefits of a treatment, and is not obliged to prescribe a treatment that they do not think is appropriate.
If a patient asks me for a treatment that has been shown to be ineffective and has the potential for serious adverse effects, I don’t prescribe it, but will work with the patient to find alternative treatments. For example, some nonhormonal prescription treatments are moderately effective for hot flashes and sleep disturbance, and topical estrogen is very effective for vaginal dryness.
However, the case of HRT for symptoms of menopause is more complicated, because estrogen is the most effective treatment we have for menopausal symptoms, particularly for hot flashes. There are risks to HRT, but the benefits for some women are so great that they are willing to accept some risks.
You mentioned the risk of heart disease and stroke. A landmark study called the Women’s Health Initiative helped to define and quantify those (and other) risks. Its effect has been to dramatically reduce the prescribing of menopausal hormone therapy, but the results should not be interpreted to mean that hormone treatment is always inappropriate, even in women who are in their mid-60s, where risks are higher.
Moreover, a woman’s entire health status should be considered when deciding whether to prescribe hormone treatments. In women with a history of an estrogen-dependent tumor (like many breast cancers), a history of a blood clot or a stroke, or a few other issues, the harm almost certainly outweighs the benefits. Otherwise, a wise clinician looks at the patient’s risk for heart disease, blood clots and similar conditions. Women at a very high risk for heart disease should probably avoid estrogen. Using lower-dose estrogen by patch (rather than pills) is wise for women at moderate risk, such as those who are in their 60s.
Physicians do not want to prescribe medications that will harm their patients, and most have stopped prescribing menopausal hormone therapy entirely for women, to prevent disease. However, it still has a role in treating symptoms. I recommend you seek out an expert in treatment of menopausal treatments and have a frank discussion about your willingness to assume risk in order to have a better quality of life.

DID YOU KNOW?
The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that around eight million adults in the United States experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a given year. Women experience PTSD at a much greater rate than men. Estimates from the USDVA indicate that 10 percent of women and 4 percent of men are affected by PTSD. Instances of PTSD are similarly prevalent in Canada, where the Canadian Psychological Association estimates that around 8 percent of Canadians who experience a traumatic event develop PTSD.Though no one is immune to PTSD,rates of the disorder among combat veterans are significantly higher than the rates among the general population. USDVA reports that one study of 1,938 veterans found that the prevalence rate among Gulf War veterans was around 14 percent, while an older study from the American Psychological Association found that about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans had PTSD in their lifetime.
HOW FLUORIDATED WATER HELPS OUR TEETH
Seventy-five percent of U.S. households have drinking water treated with fluoride at a level that prevents tooth decay and is safe for drinking. Because fluoride occurs naturally in water but not always at levels high enough to help protect teeth, it is often added to municipal tap water. Bottled water doesn’t contain fluoride, so you may need to supplement with a fluoridated mouthwash if your main source of drinkingwaterisbottledorwellwater. Fluoride helps children’s developing teeth by entering the bloodstream where it’s carried to the jawbone to help form healthy tooth enamel. Adultsandchildrenbothbenefitfrom fluoride because it mixes with saliva in the mouth to neutralize decaycausing acids and helps repair tooth enamel.
In addition to including fluoride in
your oral hygiene regimen, we have lots of good ideas on how to help keep your mouth a healthy one. Because we understand that conscientious dental care is a crucial part of overall health, we strongly believe that one of the most important services we render our patients is a plan for preventive care. Along with daily brushing and flossing, one crucial tool to your good dental health is regular professional care. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is located at 6 Batavia City Centre;callusat 585.343.4246.
P.S. Getting fluoride from a variety of sources (drinking water, toothpaste, mouthwash, dental treatments) is an excellent way to prevent tooth decay.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.
When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.
Need a ROOF REPLACEMENT?
Makes about 45
PHILLY CHEESESTEAK DUMPLINGS
50 thin square eggless wonton wrappers (around 4 inches in size)
Vegetable oil, for frying
Filling:
5 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and finely chopped
1 tablespoon roasted sesame oil
1 pound, 2 ounces cooked, shredded beef short ribs
11 ounces cabbage kimchi, drained and finely chopped
3 1/2 ounces spring onions, finely chopped
3 ounces pickled jalapeños, finely chopped
1 pound, 2 ounces mature cheddar cheese, grated
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
To serve:
Silgochu (dried chilli threads)
1 spring onion, julienned and soaked in ice water until curled, then drained Sriracha
For the filling, first sauté the mushrooms in the sesame oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-low heat until just softened. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the filling ingredients with the mushrooms. Mix together using your hands, really breaking up the short rib meat to make a uniform texture.
For the dumplings, line a couple of baking sheets with parchment and set aside. Fill a small bowl with water. Unwrap the wonton wrappers and cover lightly with a piece of clingfilm to keep them moist. Lay a wrapper on a clean work surface and put 1 ounce of the meat filling in the center. Dip a forefinger into the water and run it along the edges of the wrapper to moisten the surface. Now bring the open edges to the center, and pinch where the edges meet each other, creating four seams in a cross shape. Set aside and cover with clingfilm or a damp tea towel while you shape the rest. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling, making sure the dumplings are not touching on the baking sheets.
To a medium saucepan, add the vegetable oil and heat to 340 F (170 C). Working in batches, place the dumplings on their sides in the pan in a single layer without crowding. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the fried dumplings to a wire rack or kitchen paper-lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining dumplings. If you don’t plan on cooking them straight away, you can freeze them on the baking sheets, then bag them up and store in the freezer.
Top with some of the silgochu and curly spring onion and serve immediately with the sriracha.

Q&A Master Gardeners with the
Why would my garden always look so far behind my neighbors’ gardens? What might I be doing differently/ wrong?
It is always encouraged for questions like this for you to consider reaching out to your local County’s Cornell Cooperative Extension as most have agents or Master Gardeners that would be happy to do site visits to help you assess your garden and further your gardening knowledge. Itpotentiallycouldbethesoilandhow yourneighborisamendingit.Itcould
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
be potentially plant selection. Or it could be planting timing or planting skills. There are so many variables that could affect your garden versus your neighbors.’ One thing that is pretty universal is that gardeners on average are pretty open to talking about gardening, especially their successes. There are vast amounts of research and studies regarding how gardening particularly community gardens build social communities. So, take a deep breath and ask your neighbor their thoughts. I’m sure they would be happy to share. Also,
if you are looking for educational opportunities to broaden your knowledge, reach out to your local CCE; they may have a program like Seed to Supper that might give you the tools and knowledge to be the best gardener you can be. CCEs are great resources for all kinds of information, so take advantage of them as each county has one.
PS. While gardening on many levels is experiential learning, “Learning by Doing,” you rarely are doing somethingwrong…it’sjustaprocess of learning what may work better for you and your specific garden!

EFFICIENCY AT WORK
Information is now seemingly always at our fingertips thanks to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. While these devices may theoretically allow workers to become more productive, research suggests otherwise. Professor, researcher and author Gloria Mark with the University of California, Irvine says that activity switching and being frequently interrupted, including self-interruptions like checking social media and email, can lead people to develop short attention spans. That inability to focus for extended periods of time can adverselyaffectefficiency.

IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY
Avoid caffeine in the late afternoon. Some professionals rely on caffeinated beverages such as coffee or energy drinks to combat afternoon drowsiness. While that afternoon caffeine fix might provide an immediate, if temporary, jolt of energy, it might also affect a person’s energy levels the following day. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that caffeine consumed as early as six hours before bedtime can significantly disrupt sleep. Professionals who reach for a cup of coffee in the lateafternoonmightgetasudden boost of energy, but their energy levels the following day might be lower due to a poor night’s sleep.
