Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus.

The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.

Adopting a “War Dog”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I just watched an older movie about a military dog, called “Max.” How can I adopt a dog like that? -- T.T. via email

DEAR T.T.: While “Max” is a compelling movie, adopting a former military working dog takes a fair amount of research on your part, and the ability to care for dogs that have high energy and need plenty of attention and continuing training. All military dog adoptions are handled through the Department of Defense Military Working Dog Adoption Program at Lackland AFB in Texas.

Dogs eligible for adoption were retired due to age, injury or sickness. Not all dogs saw combat. Some worked in national security, while others were trained as working dogs but did not meet the standards for military service.

Be prepared for a long wait a er submitting the application -- up to a year or more. First priority for adoption goes to law-enforcement agencies, if the dog is still t for duty. If not, the dog’s handler can adopt it. Only a er that do dogs become available for adoption to civilians. Some dogs, sadly, are not adoptable due to temperament or severe injuries.

In addition to patience, be aware that you don’t have control over what type of dog is made available; although you can state your preference on the application. Be prepared for some pre-adoption expenses as well: If selected to adopt a MWD, you’ll need to travel to where the dog is being kept (most likely, Lackland) at least twice -- once to be interviewed and meet the dog, and again to pick it up if your application is approved.

A shout-out to Mamma G’s Restaurant in Henrietta: I ordered food to go for three and they got one order wrong, including forgetting the dessert. When I phoned to see if it could be corrected, they not only obliged cheerfully, but also provided the replacement food completely for free, which included a main course. If only more businesses engaged in these practices! We all make mistakes, but these folks were bent on correcting their error, and doing it pleasantly and promptly. Yard Sale Thief

On July 8th we were having a neighborly yard sale in [local town]. Around noon we had a torrential downpour. I had tarped two tables with items that could not get wet. Other items were on another table and the ground which could get wet. We went into the house to get out of the rain. My wife had looked out the window and said a woman who had a black SUV was putting a gas can in her car. Then she said I think she is putting it back on the ground. After the rain stopped we went out to find out that over $150.00 worth of items were stolen. I never expected this at a yard sale. Yes, I should have kept watch over it continuously.

Dogs at music in the park

We are senior citizens and enjoy going to listen to the music in the park. We really don’t know why people insist on bringing their dogs. There are so many of us who go to listen to the music, not watch their dogs. It is very annoying. Please people, leave you mutts home.

Loud popping mufflers

Lately I have been exposed to this new theory that a “popping,” like a shot gun, muffler is cool. It scares me when I’m in my yard. Sounds like a drive-by out here in God’s country. I can only imagine what that back pressure is doing internally to your engine. Backfires are not cool. Why would you want everyone noticing you? I sure hope you don’t make any bad choices, bc you would be easily identified. Motorcycles seem much louder lately also, and there’s a generation that isn’t sure when and how to shift. Again, why draw attention to your ignorance? I guess, don’t worry, mommy will buy you another one if you ruin it. Haha.

According to their website, “ e Freecycle Network® is made up of more than 5,000 local town groups with over 9 million members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonpro t movement of people who are giving (and getting) stu for free in their own towns and keeping good stu out of land lls. Membership is free, and everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.”

How do people meet to give or receive an item?

ere are a few options. Members can come to your home, meet up at a location convenient to both parties, or if you feel particularly magnanimous, you can o er to drop the item o !

Is this a ‘quid pro quo’ arrangement? Do I have to give you one thing in exchange for another?

Not at all! While there are a few guidelines having to do with how o en you request a speci c item, there are no quali cations such as making your rst post an o er, balancing the number of wanted vs o er posts, etc. In fact, there is no borrowing, swapping/trading unless you have you own “friend’s circle.”

What can, or cannot, be o ered via Freecycle?

An ‘honorable mention’ goes to a man that asked for extralarge false teeth to chew through his wife’s bad cooking, and a replacement hearing aid with an on and o switch because his current one doesn’t allow him to shut it o and all his wife does is complain all day long.

Not at all. Signup is found at https://www.freecycle.org/signup. Once there, you enter a user name, email, and password. We ask that user names be “family friendly.” en you look for town groups you would like to join and click “Join is Group.” Some groups prefer to approve new members and others let you join immediately but o en put you on moderation until you have posted without any issues.

What do you want everyone to know about Freecycle and why should they join?

Freecycle is a nice way to give back to the community. It gives those asking for items a place to post without judgment for the most part. ose who o er items are o en “paying it forward.” Yes, some members are looking for someone else to get rid of their junk for them, but this is Rochester; those “useless items” have been turned into pieces of art and grace our city and suburbs with beauty. Maintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride

Balancing tires involves equalizing the weight of the combined tire and wheel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the wheel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise weight distribution is nearly impossible without a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires wobble, causing noticeable vibrations.

Mechanics will test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine will spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting weights will be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of weight. Lead weights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead.

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be replaced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs when replacing them. Industry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every two years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking with the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor weather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of night vision many drivers experience as they age. Always practice summer sun safety

When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

Doctors Won’t Prescribe Hormone Therapy to Woman Over 60

DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recently published column, you stated, “As always, the decision belongs to the patient,” while addressing a concern about the benefits and risks of stopping a statin drug. Oh, really? Then, why is it that, once I turned 60, not a single doctor will prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to stop my debilitating post-menopausal symptoms? After suffering from menopausal symptoms starting at age 42, I was finally prescribed HRT at age 57. What relief I felt, as it was the only remedy to alleviate my hot flashes, weight gain, lack of sleep and vaginal dryness.

Once I hit 60, I was ordered to stop HRT, and no one since will prescribe it for me now. I am 66, suffer from hot flashes daily and have my sleep interrupted at least five times a night with terrible night sweats. I have tried just about every over-the-counter offering with zero effectiveness.

I will gladly trade the greater risk of heart attack and stroke, and the possible shorter life span, for relief from symptoms that affect my daily quality of life. Clearly, the choice is not mine, because if I had a choice, I would ask for continued prescriptions of HRT to give me relief. Why don’t I have that choice as a patient? -- R.M.T.

ANSWER: A patient always has the right to refuse a treatment recommended from a physician. However, the physician has the obligation to consider the risks and benefits of a treatment, and is not obliged to prescribe a treatment that they do not think is appropriate.

If a patient asks me for a treatment that has been shown to be ineffective and has the potential for serious adverse effects, I don’t prescribe it, but will work with the patient to find alternative treatments. For example, some nonhormonal prescription treatments are moderately effective for hot flashes and sleep disturbance, and topical estrogen is very effective for vaginal dryness.

However, the case of HRT for symptoms of menopause is more complicated, because estrogen is the most effective treatment we have for menopausal symptoms, particularly for hot flashes. There are risks to HRT, but the benefits for some women are so great that they are willing to accept some risks.

You mentioned the risk of heart disease and stroke. A landmark study called the Women’s Health Initiative helped to define and quantify those (and other) risks. Its effect has been to dramatically reduce the prescribing of menopausal hormone therapy, but the results should not be interpreted to mean that hormone treatment is always inappropriate, even in women who are in their mid-60s, where risks are higher.

Moreover, a woman’s entire health status should be considered when deciding whether to prescribe hormone treatments. In women with a history of an estrogen-dependent tumor (like many breast cancers), a history of a blood clot or a stroke, or a few other issues, the harm almost certainly outweighs the benefits. Otherwise, a wise clinician looks at the patient’s risk for heart disease, blood clots and similar conditions. Women at a very high risk for heart disease should probably avoid estrogen. Using lower-dose estrogen by patch (rather than pills) is wise for women at moderate risk, such as those who are in their 60s.

Physicians do not want to prescribe medications that will harm their patients, and most have stopped prescribing menopausal hormone therapy entirely for women, to prevent disease. However, it still has a role in treating symptoms. I recommend you seek out an expert in treatment of menopausal treatments and have a frank discussion about your willingness to assume risk in order to have a better quality of life.

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that around eight million adults in the United States experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a given year. Women experience PTSD at a much greater rate than men. Estimates from the USDVA indicate that 10 percent of women and 4 percent of men are affected by PTSD. Instances of PTSD are similarly prevalent in Canada, where the Canadian Psychological Association estimates that around 8 percent of Canadians who experience a traumatic event develop PTSD.Though no one is immune to PTSD,rates of the disorder among combat veterans are significantly higher than the rates among the general population. USDVA reports that one study of 1,938 veterans found that the prevalence rate among Gulf War veterans was around 14 percent, while an older study from the American Psychological Association found that about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans had PTSD in their lifetime.

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.

When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK DUMPLINGS

50 thin square eggless wonton wrappers (around 4 inches in size)

Vegetable oil, for frying

Filling:

5 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and finely chopped

1 tablespoon roasted sesame oil

1 pound, 2 ounces cooked, shredded beef short ribs

11 ounces cabbage kimchi, drained and finely chopped

3 1/2 ounces spring onions, finely chopped

3 ounces pickled jalapeños, finely chopped

1 pound, 2 ounces mature cheddar cheese, grated

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

To serve:

Silgochu (dried chilli threads)

1 spring onion, julienned and soaked in ice water until curled, then drained Sriracha

For the filling, first sauté the mushrooms in the sesame oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-low heat until just softened. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the filling ingredients with the mushrooms. Mix together using your hands, really breaking up the short rib meat to make a uniform texture.

For the dumplings, line a couple of baking sheets with parchment and set aside. Fill a small bowl with water. Unwrap the wonton wrappers and cover lightly with a piece of clingfilm to keep them moist. Lay a wrapper on a clean work surface and put 1 ounce of the meat filling in the center. Dip a forefinger into the water and run it along the edges of the wrapper to moisten the surface. Now bring the open edges to the center, and pinch where the edges meet each other, creating four seams in a cross shape. Set aside and cover with clingfilm or a damp tea towel while you shape the rest. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling, making sure the dumplings are not touching on the baking sheets.

To a medium saucepan, add the vegetable oil and heat to 340 F (170 C). Working in batches, place the dumplings on their sides in the pan in a single layer without crowding. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the fried dumplings to a wire rack or kitchen paper-lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining dumplings. If you don’t plan on cooking them straight away, you can freeze them on the baking sheets, then bag them up and store in the freezer.

Top with some of the silgochu and curly spring onion and serve immediately with the sriracha.
