Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars. There’s no shame in asking for help to complete a project. Some homeowners may underestimate the scope of a project until it’s too late. Asking family, friends or neighbors for help might be the only way to get a stalled project back on track. Certain home improvement projects may not require advanced skills, and even friends or family with little or no home improvement experience can pitch in to complete such projects. When more advanced projects stall, homeowners may want to hire contractors to complete the work. If budgets have not left much room for hiring a contractor, homeowners can perform some of the labor on their own. People can also support beekeepers’ work by purchasing local honey. Not only does it keep jobs in the area, but some research also suggests that consuming local honey can help reduce seasonal allergies. WebMD says the practice is based on immunotherapy. Local honey contains traces of local pollen that may be responsible for seasonal allergies. Repeated exposure to small doses of this pollen might help bodies develop natural immunities. — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain exercise explore courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling. The landscaping outside of a home can contribute to cooler climates inside the home. Deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, and when planted on the western and southern sides of a home, these trees can block the sun from entering the home during the hottest times of day, reducing the need to lower the thermostat on air conditioners. Of course, when these trees shed their leaves in late fall, sunlight can then make its way into the home, potentially reducing heating costs.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS

Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

Michael Sellars, Ameriprise Financial, LLC Matthew Stives, KeyBank Marin Valentino, URMC Patrick Williams, Passero Associates The Rochester’s Finest are honored for their career success, commitment to the community and dedication to raising funds and awareness to help support CF research, patient services, and other mission-based initiatives of the CF Foundation. e program runs for 12 weeks and culminates in a celebration of their accomplishments on September 15, 2022. Included in the program are opportunities for professional development, networking, and developing skills as a leadership volunteer.“Together with our community we are transforming cystic brosis from a deadly childhood disease to the best story in medicine,” said Heather McKeever, Executive Director of the WNY Chapter. “When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was rst founded, children with CF typically did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are achieving milestones like going to college and starting families of their own. We are making incredible progress, but we can’t do it alone. We invite everyone in the Rochester community to help us make ‘CF’ stand not for cystic brosis, but for ‘Cure Found.’” ree of this year’s prestigious Rochester’s Finest (RF) honorees are outstanding employees of Genesee Valley Publications: Sarah Christ, Mackenzie McGrain, and Dominic Pezzimenti. “I was nominated for Rochester’s Finest by my coworker, a RF graduate from 2021, Laurie Abbott,” shared Sarah Christ. “At the Creekside event where we fundraised for CFF last year, I met Patty Schwarzweller, the Associate Executive Director at CCF of WNY, and I instantly fell in love with her passion for CFF and RF. A few of my friends’ family members live with cystic brosis and have bene tted directly from CF, so I was honored to get involved.” Christ was paired with CFF Ambassador. “I had the privilege of meeting Nicole and her 13-year-old son Nate who shared his journey with CFF,” she said. “Nicole shared how CFF and RF had made development and research resulting in breakthrough treatments and medications possible. RF gave me the opportunity to network and get involved with my community, to learn about CFF and raise funds in a fun and creative way, and to develop a personal connection with someone living with CF.”

Celebrating Rochester’s Finest Class of

2022

About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation e Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic brosis. e Foundation funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. Based in Bethesda, Md., the Foundation also supports and accredits a national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care for a chronic disease. e CF Foundation is a donor-supported nonpro t organization. For more information, please go to www.CFF.org.

Dominic Pezzimenti was nominated by coworker Christine White, as well. “I became involved because I always think it’s good to give back when you can, and Christine thought I had the drive and personality for it. CFF and RF are such a top-notch group, and it’s nothing short of an honor to be a part of it. CF can be such a burden to those living with it, and CFF has paved great paths to help those living with this disease,” Pezzimenti added. “I have learned so much during my time with CFF and RF, not only regarding fundraising and the wide range of smart and unique people we have in this area, but also regarding the visibility CFF and RF create for a disease that does not get a lot of attention, yet deeply impacts people living right here in our communities.”

BY PATTY SCHWARZWELLER, EXPANDED BY AMANDA DUDEK “When I was nominated for Rochester’s Finest by my mentor and RF 2020 graduate, Christine White, I decided to get involved so that I could learn more about cystic brosis and help raise funds for a cure,” said Mackenzie McGrain. “I met a wonderful woman who had been diagnosed with CF as a baby. She invited me into her home and showed me what her daily CF routine looks like. I was shocked at how many medications and precautions she had to take several times daily, without which her life expectancy would be shortened, and her organ function would drop signi cantly low. CFF and RF are very important in their work to raise CF awareness, to raise funds for necessary medications and equipment, and to hopefully nd a permanent cure for CF,” McGrain added. “I have met amazing individuals who commit their time and e orts to this, and I am honored to be a part of the RF Class of 2022!”

INFLAMED GUMS

Inflammation of the gums, also known as gingivitis, is usually caused by an overgrowth of plaque and a bacterial infection. If left untreated, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis, a more serious gum infection that can lead to tooth loss. Plaque is a thin layer of bacteria that’s constantly forming on teeth. Gums become infected when food and plaque get trapped under the gumline in the “sulcus,” the small space between the gums and teeth. When plaque extends below the gumline into the sulcus, the gums become inflamed and gingivitis results. If left untreated, gingivitis can cause the gums to separate from the teeth, leading to progressive infection, soft tissue and bone injury, loose teeth, and tooth loss. It is estimated that more than half of all people over age 18 are in the early stages of gingivitis. After age 35, about three out of four adults are in some way affected. Avoid inflamed, infected gums and the need for serious treatment. Protect yourself and your family by practicing conscientious home care, having regular checkups, and eating a healthy diet. We’ll help too at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, because we care almost as much as you do about the health of your teeth and gums. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. In addition to inadequate oral hygiene, other risk factors for gingivitis are smoking, diabetes, broken fillings, crooked teeth, chemotherapy treatments, and certain medications. Beautiful smiles enhance self-confidence & self-esteem.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Several months ago, I started adding 25 grams of whey protein to an afternoon smoothie each day. I was worried about muscle loss after reading an article. I have seen the sagging muscles and skin in my arms and thighs. I am a 71-year-old woman, who plays tennis twice a week and goes to the gym about once a week. I have friends my age who have started adding collagen powders to their smoothies to improve their skin and prevent further facial wrinkles. After researching collagen supplements, I learned that they contain collagen peptides and protein. The dosage and ingredients vary by vendor. What is the correct collagen dosage and ingredients I should be looking for? Is the protein in collagen the same as the protein in whey? -- R.K. ANSWER: All proteins, such as whey and collagen, are long strands of amino acids. A “peptide” is two or more amino acids connected, while a “polypeptide” is 20 or more amino acids. A protein is a polypeptide that has a function in the organism. Proteins are broken down by acid and enzymes in your stomach, back into their component amino acids, to be used anyplace the body has need for them. Part of the reason that skin wrinkles is loss of collagen, but it is not at all clear that consuming more collagen, or any protein, will increase the collagen in the skin and therefore reduce wrinkles. You can save a great deal of money by consuming collagen, if you decide you want to, from time-honored sources like chicken broth. Some collagen supplements are made from parts of animal carcasses that contain heavy metals and other toxins, so I would be wary of supplements. Medicated creams like vitamin A derivatives (such as retinol or tretinoin) work by increasing collagen production in the skin. Vitamin C creams help prevent the breakdown of the existing collagen in the skin. Vitamin C breaks down quickly, so these creams need to be handled sparingly. Moisturizing the skin makes it appear fuller and helps prevent further damage, especially when a daily sunscreen is included. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Over the last year, microcephaly, a rare but serious disability, has garnered substantial attention. Microcephaly is a neurological condition in which an infant’s head is significantly smaller than the heads of other children of the same age and sex, advises The Mayo Clinic. The condition is typically the result of the brain developing abnormally in the womb or not growing as it is supposed to after birth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says microcephaly can be an isolated condition, or it can occur in combination with other major birth defects. Depending on the severity of the condition, children with microcephaly can face any number of symptoms.

Advanced Lower Extremity Wound Care Diabetic Care, Limb/Foot Salvage & Foot Surgery/Trauma DID YOU KNOW? According to Let’s Move!, a comprehensive initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity, doctors are concerned that the rise of obesity in children and teens may lead to problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and sleep apnea as they age. Children who are obese may have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and an abnormal glucose tolerance, increasing their risk factors for cardiovascular disease. But poor physical health is not the only concern parents should have if their children are obese. Overweight and obese children are often targets of social discrimination, which can negatively affect their selfesteem and may even hinder their academic and social functioning. Parents concerned about their children’s weight should consult their children’s physicians and recognize that a combination of daily exercise and a healthy diet is the most effective way to help kids lose weight and maintain a healthy weight into adulthood.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the brous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, symptoms of microcephaly include impaired cognitive development, delayed motor functions, dwarfism, seizures, difficulties with balance, and other neurological abnormalities. Although microcephaly is rare, according to the National Birth Defects Prevention Network, it may become more common. That’s because microcephaly has been linked to mothers who were exposed to the Zika virus while pregnant. Exposure to in utero substance abuse, as well as genetic or chromosomal issues, also can lead to microcephaly. Dr. Nassim Zecavati, an assistant professor of pediatrics and neurology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, says essentially anything that slows down brain growth in the womb or causes a severe deprivation of oxygen and blood flow before, during or after delivery can be problematic. Unfortunately, no treatment exists to return a child’s head and brain to normal size. Instead, treatment focuses on reducing the impact associated with neurological disabilities and subsequent physical disabilities. Early childhood intervention programs that include speech, physical and occupational therapy may be part of a child’s course of treatment. Certain medications can be prescribed to help with seizures or hyperactivity. Thanks to its link to the Zika virus, microcephaly has garnered considerable attention over the last year-plus. Though still rare, microcephaly is something expecting parents and couples planning to have children should familiarize themselves with.

We are being overrun by boxelder bugs! There are no box elder trees nearby that I can find. However, the tree that has those “helicopters” hangs over my garage (not my tree). I can kill the ones I find with soapy water, but they just keep coming. Soapy water will intercept many bugs. Depending on where they are located and annoying you may make a difference in how you go about trying to stop them. Boxelder bugs may be found on a structure foundation at this time of year but are not looking for winter quarters so not likely to appear inside. They can seem to just keep coming. There may be two generations a year. In the fall, the population is determinate, so they won’t keep coming forever. You might be able to beat them this way if you are persistent. Keep washing them off the side of the house. Being on guard in the fall may be a difficult task as their march – or flight - continues after you have intercepted a batch. The bug prefers seed bearing boxelder trees. It feeds on the seed case (helicopter) similar to all maples. Some sources indicate removal of the seed bearing boxelder trees will alleviate the problem. Boxelder bugs do not do serious damage to trees and other plants and are not a risk for stinging. They lay eggs mostly in boxelder trees and elsewhere including those helicopter seed wings lying as debris on the Vacuumground. up box elder bugs and dispose of contents in a tight container. The contents will likely smell bad. A shop vac could contain soapy water. (Family Features) Families are always looking for ways to enjoy vacation time together that maximizes fun, while minimizing the budget. To help your family reduce costs on summer travel: Prepare the car. Purchases from your local grocery store are cheaper than convenience stores and fast food restaurants en route, so save time and money by pre-buying snacks and drinks. Take advantage of the time together by talking, singing and laughing. Make the journey as fun as the final destination. Powdery mold has been plaguing my zucchini, cucumber and squash plants for the past few years, in spite of many attempts to get rid of it! What’s the best solution to this problem? Powdery mildew on these plants is very common, especially toward the end of the season. It can be reduced or avoided by providing good air circulation – open space, staking and weed control among the plants, watering with a soaker hose instead of overhead, and avoiding excess application of fertilizer or late season fertilizing. It is easier to prevent than to treat. There are resistant varieties available. Fungicides including organic remedies are available. Lower and upper leaf surfaces should be treated. This link provides more details for this problem: https://extension. fruit-vegetable-diseases/powdery-mildew.wvu.edu/lawn-gardening-pests/plant-disease/

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * To clean out the drawers of my husband’s tool cabinet without disturbing the tools, I tucked a knee-high panty hose leg over my vacuum cleaner wand. Most things stayed put, but the one or two small pieces of hardware that got sucked up were easily retrieved. I also did this on his workbench. I picked up all the dust and shavings along with the stray pieces of hardware. I pulled them out of the hose leg, and they were in a tidy pile for him to put away. -- U.L. in Kansas

* Ripen a green tomato by wrapping it in a sheet of newspaper or placing it in a plain, small paper bag. Leave it on the counter and check it daily until ripe.

*cream.Ourfamily loves to make our own pizza, and we purchase dough from a pizzeria. On pizza nights, I pick up the dough first thing on the way home from work. I get it close to my work and let it sit in a bowl in the car while I pick up the kids and drive home. It takes about 45 minutes, so it’s risen nicely while we’ve been on the go. -- E.F. in New York

Before we know it, that yearly event will be here -- when we have to decide what to do about our Medicare plans between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7 for coverage that will begin Jan. 1. ere are several things we have to consider, such as taking on a prescription drug plan or changing to a new one, or staying with original Medicare or going with an Advantage plan or changing Advantage plans or going back to original Medicare. All these take time to think about. oughts to consider: What will Social Security look like in 2023? We won’t know the Social Security increase until it is announced in October. ere have been guesses that we might receive as much as a 10.5% increase, which calculates to $175 for the average bene ciary. e Part B premium will be deducted from We’rethat.likely looking at an 8.5% increase in Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans costs. Check the costs of your prescriptions over the past three years, because for some of us, that’s where the big-ticket expenses are. Chances are the drug costs have gone up, possibly even signi cantly. And chances are they’re not coming down. What to do, what to do ... Two options are worth looking at: GoodRx (www.goodrx.com) and Marc Cuban CostPlus Drug Company (costplusdrugs.com). Both o er discounted prices on prescription drugs. Investigate and see what you think. A Kaiser study concluded that seven out of 10 people did not research the plans during open enrollment. Because of the rising costs of everything in our lives, this needs to be the year that we compare, compare, compare. When in doubt, look into SHIP, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, which is in every state, sta ed by volunteers who can help you wade through the Medicare information. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Getting Ready for Medicare Open Enrollment

The Rochester’s Finest are honored for their career success, commitment to the community and dedication to raising funds and awareness to help support CF research, patient services, and other mission-based initiatives of the CF Foundation. e program runs for 12 weeks and culminates in a celebration of their accomplishments on September 15, 2022.

“When I was nominated for Rochester’s Finest by my mentor and RF 2020 graduate, Christine White, I decided to get involved so that I could learn more about cystic brosis and help raise funds for a cure,” said Mackenzie McGrain.

Chesterton has given us the key to success and popularity. It is so simple…perhaps too simple…yet few people ever apply it to dailyEverysituations.human wants recognition. Even criminals may be motivated by a desire to be noted, we are told. We all want to be recognized and respected. So, we tend to try to impress others by telling what we have done, what we think. Obviously, we could make others feel great by taking a sincere interest in what THEY say, in what THEY think. In that way, we achieve a measure of greatness for ourselves. We provide an essential service to the families of this community, and we are proud of our find reputation among those we have served.

All classes are welcome to join again next year as the class of 1973 will host. Thank you, local drive-in! My family and I visited a local drive-in movie theatre over the weekend and were very favorably No Good Deed On August 11th, I was heading to work when a small black and white dog ran in front of my vehicle. I caught it and called my daughter to come get it and start going door-to-door. She proceeded to do so and was advised to go to the post office and leave a flyer. While there, she asked a guy if he recognized the dog. He didn’t, but said he would house the dog and put up a flyer as we had a big dog at home and didn’t know how he will welcome a small dog. I also posted it on our town's Facebook page. Later, the owner found out who we were, came to our home, and confronted my daughter. Instead of being grateful, our neighbor was angry that we didn’t have the dog and proceeded to call the cops on us. They didn't need to be involved, and it wasted their time. A police officer showed up, took our account, and advised us to try to contact the guy. Come to find out, this isn’t the first dog I’ve rescued of hers. How about be grateful that someone decided to stop and help rather than drive off? No Support Can you please tell me why it is so difficult to obtain papers for a support dog? My friend, age 62, who is on disability for arthritis of the spine and PTSD, was once a surgeon's assistant. She had two boys who became Green Berets and fought eight years in Iraq. They're in Texas and California now. She has two grandchildren she has never met. Her family (two 82-year-old parents) will not help her. She's on apartment waiting lists. None accept a small Yorkie Terrier. That's her family now, a small dog which most apartments will not accept unless the person has support dog papers. When she asked the doctor for help, the doctor made her undergo the doctor's idea of therapy - psychiatric medicine and a 20-year-old therapist. No papers were ever provided.
