the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS

Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

Open the windows at night. Daytime temperatures, particularly during the dog days of summer, may necessitate the use of air conditioners. But men and women who live in climates where temperatures drop considerably at night can sleep with their windows open. This reduces energy consumption and saves money, and can be a great way to introduce fresh air into a home during a time of year when air can become stagnant.

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part ofthetool.Soakthetoolovernight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

WOOD STAINING TIPS

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and otherhomedesignelements.

Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, andbirch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting inblotchinganduneventone.

Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and

with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieveamoreevenlook.

Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsestgritsandpaperandmove toahighergritforasmoothfinish.

Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers.

Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushesafterward.

Reduce energy costs and improve the safety of your home through energy efficiency measures in owned or rented property.

Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to productdirections.

Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color andafinishtosavetime.

Family of 3: $58,848 Family of 4: $70,056

Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardwareanddamageit. CORRAL ENTRYWAY CLUTTER

The entryway to a home is the first thing guests experience when coming inside. It also can be the first place residents drop their belongings after long days at school or work. As a result, entryways can quickly be consumed by clutter. Taming such messes takes a mixture of ingenuity and planning.

Homeowners hoping to clear their entryways of clutter must first decide what they want to get out of the space. Will it simply be a decorative spot with photos and other home decor on display? Or is functionality the primary goal? Once that decision has been made, take inventory of which items, such as shoes, keys, umbrellas or coats, need to be in the area, which don’t (i.e., old mail). To make things more organized, rearrange the former while removing the latter. Next it is time to assess storage needs and what’s already available. User-friendly storage items may need to be purchased to make the room as functional as possible.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapescansavehomeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertimebutdropconsiderably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

There shall be eternal summer in the grateful heart. ~Celia Thaxter

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC

Dimensions: Both the renovation experts at This Old House and the real estate experts at UpNest indicate that at least half of a finished attic must be a minimum of seven feet high and seven feet wide and 70 square feet. Requirements may differ depending on where homeowners live, but that 7-7-70 guideline is generally the minimum requirement. An attic that fails to meet such requirements won’t necessarily be a lost cause, but it might be costly to make adjustments that ultimately align with local codes.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to a 2011 study published in the peer-reviewed journal the Annual Review of Nutrition, experimental data from animal studies suggests that maternal undernutrition among pregnant women may play a role in preterm birth. The study also reported that a lack of specific nutrients during pregnancy may influence gestation length by increasing the likelihood that a woman will give birth before reaching full-term. Women who are pregnant or hope to become pregnant can speak with their physicians about the role nutrition can play in a healthy, full-term pregnancy.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DAIRY

Heart health benefits: Some people avoid dairy because of perceptions that it is bad for cardiac health. A report presented at the 2018 Congress of the European Society of Cardiology that looked at 20 studies involving around 25,000 people found no association between the consumption of most dairy products (including whole fat varieties) and cardiovascular disease. The only exception was milk, but the results showed one would have to drink almost a liter of milk a day for a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Still, the American Heart Association recommends adults choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products whenever possible. Also, a 2018 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found men who ate plenty of fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese had a smaller risk of coronary artery disease than men who ate less.

Accutane Isn’t To Blame for Affecting Woman’s Fertility

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter is in her 30s and has been experiencing infertility for several years. She and her husband have been tested, and the issue is her egg quality. She’s had several rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) with no success. At age 19, she was prescribed Accutane for her acne. She had to take a monthly pregnancy test in order to take this medication. I researched this medication at the time and was aware of the depression side effects. I was also aware that if a pregnancy occurred while taking this drug, it would have to be terminated. The situation was not a concern at the time. Now, years later, her fertility doctor says that she has eggs, but they are of poor quality. What is your opinion on this medication affecting fertility? I read that Accutane was banned in 2009. -- C.M.

ANSWER: Isotretoin (Accutane) is the most effective treatment for acne, but it has the potential for serious side effects and can only be given after a thorough review of its risks.

I have to correct two misapprehensions: Although brandname Accutane was discontinued in 2009, generic isotretoin was not banned and still remains an extremely beneficial treatment that is safe when used appropriately. Secondly, there is no obligation while on this medicine to commit to a pregnancy termination.

Great care needs to be taken to prevent pregnancy, with repeatedly negative pregnancy tests before starting therapy, as well as two forms of birth control in any person who could get pregnant (unless they are abstinent). There is a high likelihood that a baby who is exposed to isotretoin will experience severe damage or be stillborn. If a pregnancy occurs while on isotretoin, the drug must immediately be stopped, and the person needs to be referred to an expert in reproductive toxicity. A pregnancy termination should be discussed, but the decision is always up to the patient (except where prohibited by law).

Although isotretoin can cause severe damage to the developing fetus if taken during pregnancy, a study showed that any effect on fertility was gone 18 months after treatment. There are many reasons why a woman can have difficulty getting pregnant, due to eggs that are less likely to get fertilized. Age is a major factor, but many genetic conditions, chemotherapy, radiation, viruses (including COVID-19), and autoimmune diseases are known causes.

I wish your daughter the best of luck. I have had several patients give up after several rounds of IVF, only to conceive a healthy baby naturally.

LIFESTYLE CHOICES TO REDUCE CANCER RISK

Exercise regularly: Physical activity can lower estrogen levels, reduce levels of insulin in the blood, help a person lose weight, and reduce inflammation - all factors that contribute to the formation of cancer. Experts recommend 150 minutes of moderateintensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise a week.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT HEART CONDITIONS AND DENTAL WORK

Our hearts are connected to our mouths through the bloodstream. Our mouths are also full of bacteria. Dental work, including routine cleanings, can create tiny openings in the gums that make it easier for bacteria to enter the bloodstream. If bacteria reach the heart, they can inflame the heart’s inner lining, causing endocarditis. Most people with a healthy immune system can fight these bacteria effectively, but people with heart conditions and other cardiac abnormalities are at higher risk for developing endocarditis. Antibiotics were previously used preventively during dental work for most heart patients. These days, antibiotics are mostly recommended for high-risk patients like those with a prosthetic valve, transplants with value complications, prior endocarditis, and some congenital heart conditions.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.

• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.

• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.

• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

DID YOU KNOW?

Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccerintheUnitedStatesin2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.

Auto Satisfaction!

Keeping vehicles looking pristine requires care and diligent cleaning. So many day-to-day activities and environmental materials have the potential to damage the finish on cars and trucks. While winter weather and chemicals used to keep roadways passable are often blamed for affecting the appearance of cars and trucks, winter is not the only time of year when substances can cause damage to vehicles.

Spring and summer are prime seasons for sap, birds and insects. These times of year tend to see an uptick in road work as well, and such projects can contribute to damage caused by loose asphalt, gravel and tar. Addressing problems resulting from tree sap, insect and bird droppings and tar may not be something to look forward to, but it is necessary to keep cars looking pristine.

TIPS FOR BUYING A TEEN’S FIRST VEHICLE

Prioritize safety. According to Honda, motor vehicles are the leading cause of teenage death, so it is vital to find a reliable and safe car or truck. Vehicle size, crash test performance and safety features are the most important factors to consider when looking at cars for teens.A car with a high safety rating also may translate to discounted auto insurance, which can be a big help considering teens typically pay more out of pocket for insurance.

Many people need not travel far for a little summertime fun, as many communities host fun events throughout the warmer months.

DID YOU KNOW?

Though office work might not be the first profession individuals think of in relation to elevating one’s cancer risk, sitting at a desk for most of the day can increase a person’s risk for cancer. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, sitting for most of the day without engaging in physical activity puts individuals at increased risk for cancer. How much extra risk does that entail? Though no two individuals are the same, studies have equated sitting for eight hours a day without any physical activity to the risk posed by obesity and smoking. The DFCI notes that sitting over long periods of time has been known to cause increased blood pressure, high cholesterol and excess body fat around the waist, each of which have been identified as factors that increase a person’s risk for cancer.

The First Annual Horseshoe Lake Fishing Derby

A DAY OF COMMUNITY, CAMARADERIE, AND COMPASSION

The picturesque setting of Horseshoe Lake in Stafford, NY, became the backdrop for a remarkable event this past July— the First Annual Horseshoe Lake Fishing Derby. Spearheaded by Steve Anderson, a Rochester native with deep roots in the area, the derby was more than just a competition; it was a heartfelt tribute to the incredible work done by Crossroads House of Batavia.

Anderson, a recent addition to the lake community but relative of those responsible for building some of the original cottages here, is no stranger to the importance of comfort care. Having lost two family members in area comfortcarehomes, “CrossroadsHouse’smissionisclosetohisheart and to the hearts of our friends at Horseshoe Lake,” say Crossroads representatives.

is two-bed non-profit comfort care home, founded in 1998, provides compassionate end-of-life care at no cost to families in Genesee and Wyoming counties. With its mission to provide dignified end-of-life care, Crossroads House is a beacon of hope for those in need. “No more people ‘falling through the cracks’ who do not receive end of life comfort care in Genesee and Wyoming counties,” says Founder Kathy Panepento, who says, “We are truly blessed and deeply thankful for having such a supportive community, caring professional staff, dedicated selfless volunteers, and an active working board of directors.”

e Horseshoe Lake Social Committee played a pivotal role in organizing these activities, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy. Local businesses also rallied behind the cause, with Batavia vendors such as Terry Hills Golf Course, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Home Depot providing prizes and materials for the derby. Batavia Insurance agent, Keith Roth, matched all donations collected, pushing the total amount raised for Crossroads House to over $600.

Joe Cavallario, a resident of Horseshoe Lake, sponsored the Derby Trophy in memory of his beloved wife, Courtney Lynn Cavallario, who tragically passed away in a car accident in November 2023. e trophy, which now bears the name of this year’s winner, is displayed on a plaque at the lake’s beach, with plenty of room to add future champions’ names—a testament to the derby’s anticipated longevity.

e derby was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from the community. Over 50 participants, ranginginagefrom young children to seasoned anglers, registered to compete in the derby, all vying to catch the largest bass. e lake was buzzing with activity from the early morning hours until the closing of the event, with boats scattered across the water, creating a lively and spirited atmosphere.

PAW’S CORNER

Be a lost pet ally

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My brother and I saw a dog that matched the photo of a lost dog on flyers around the neighborhood. We tried calling him, but he ran off. So we told our mom what happened, and she called the number on the flyer. I don’t know if the owners found the dog. We’re wondering if we did the right thing. Why did the dog run away? -- Brian and Sarah in Cincinnati

DEAR BRIAN AND SARAH: You did the right thing by telling your mom so that she could call the owners and tell them where you spotted the lost dog. Don’t feel bad about the dog running away: Lost dogs are o en shy of strangers. Some will not even come when their owners call. But, by telling them the location, the owners have a much better chance of recovering their dog. Here’s how you can support owners who are searching for a lost pet:

-- Take a photo of a lost pet flyer with your smartphone. You can instantly refer back to it if you see a pet matching the description.

-- Don’t call or chase a dog or cat if you spot it. Contact the owner as soon as possible and give them the location where you spotted the pet.

-- If the pet approaches you calmly, try to keep them in place by petting or giving them treats, until you can put a leash on them and bring them to a safe containment area. Contact the owner or local shelter.

-- If the pet appears to be ill or injured, carefully approach and wrap them in an old blanket before attempting to pick them up.

-- If the pet is being aggressive, contact animal control.

Electric Scooters

Veggie stands

What a lovely feature of our part of the country… home grown veggies, eggs, flowers for sale or for free by the side of the road. Grabbed some gorgeous sunflowers, succulent zucchini, and candy-sweet tomatoes tonight in Sweden. Makes me proud to be living here. Thanks neighbors.

Wonderful family stopped to help

Since when is it legal to drive an electric scooter down [street]? No, not just on the sidewalk but in front of moving vehicles. Then, with no helmet either. He was following a lady on a Vespa style scooter, both roughly doing 10 to 15 mph in a 30 zone. Oblivious to others, they just didn’t care. And then they went around the intersection using crosswalks, then back into the road. Where are the police? If any injury happens it should be NO fault to the drivers, regardless of the cause.

Yard/Garage Sales

We cannot thank the family in the black SUV (Lincoln maybe) that helped push our car to the side of the road when it died in traffic on RT332 near Carmens Way. At 77 years old I started to push it and all the members of this family got out from their SUV and pushed us to the side to safety. The OC Sheriff came along and kept us all safe. Monday the 12th of August reset my thoughts of who would help others today. We had only moved here (Farmington) for a year and a half, and now we know that among the fleeting moments of our lives there are the people who would "jump to help.” I didn't get names, but I wanted to post this so that perhaps they will see this and know how thankful we are. God Bless you wonderful good Samaritan family.

If you’re selling an item that’s defective or with no apparent damage, have the decency or class to point it out before you have your hand out for the cash. I bought an item, not cheap either, and I later found that it had cracks inside that leaked. You had to know. You even said you’re selling it because you’re moving. Your neighbors said differently. I tried contacting you hoping you’d do the right thing or at least tell me if there’s anything else I should know before I order the replacement part. Nope, you’re not man or woman enough to do so. Sure, it’s on me for buying at a yard sale, but either way, I’ll see you at your next sale.

Lemons have been around forever but were first introduced to the New World in 1493 by Christopher Columbus. Since then, lemons became a staple in households, for medicinal uses, and were also seen at one point as a sign of wealth. There is more to a lemon than just the flavor and its acidic properties. Lemon juice is used in herbal remedies, it is a quick fix for many ailments, and is even used for preparing at-home beauty treatments.

How many of each fruit?

Whiten clothes

Lemon juice acts as a bleaching agent, so throw your whites into boiling water with a couple of lemon halves.

Remove water spots

“Thetrulygreatpersonistheonewho makeseverypersonfeelgreat…” ~ G.K. Chesterton

Chesterton has given us the key to success and popularity. It is so simple…perhaps too simple…yet few people ever apply it to daily situations.

Every human wants recognition. Even criminals may be motivated by a desire to be noted, we are told. We all want to be recognized and respected. So, we tend to try to impress others by telling what we have done, what we think. Obviously, we could make others feel great by taking a sincere interest in what THEY say, in what THEY think. In that way, we achieve a measure of greatness for ourselves.

We provide an essential service to the families of this community, and we are proud of our find reputation among those we have served.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body.

HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE

Let kids handle more standard responsibilities. Adults tend to take more mundane responsibilities like making doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping for granted. But kids likely have no idea how to handle such tasks. Parents can encourage their high school seniors to make their own medical appointments. In addition, take kids along on grocery shopping trips, explaining how to find sale items and which foods to buy and which toavoid.Nutritionisnotalwaysforemostonthemindsofcollegefreshmen, but those who understand the importance of healthy diets are more likely to buy nutritious meals than junk food.
