Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States.
Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course.
Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy.
Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings.
Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit.

You don't know that for sure because Covid symptoms presents as a cold or allergies in some. Please respect others and test yourself as not to spread it to others. It only takes a few minutes. Some people really trying to protect themselves can get very sick. Please be responsible. One can easily spread it to six or seven people, and those six or seven people can spread it to another six or seven people, and so on. Some people can still pass away from Covid if they're sick enough.

The 1920s are the earliest known games, allegedly. A group of children at Bladworth Elementary School in Saskatchewan, Canada are reportedly the first ones to play a version of disc golf. In 1965 George Sappenfield is on break from Fresno State University and working as a recreation counselor when an idea hits him as he plays golf — he wonders if the kids in his playground would like to play golf with Frisbees, and he is right. The First O cial Disc Golf Course was built in 1975. American toy inventor Ed Headrick installs the first o cial course at Oak Grove Park in Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California — the targets are simply permanent poles. Disc Golf gains mainstream attention in 2015. Disc golf appears on ESPN's Top 10 Plays on SportsCenter, taking this sport into mainstream media, too.

High Creatinine and GFR Levels Signify Severe Kidney Damage
DEAR DR. ROACH: Last summer, a city policeman came to my door. My doctor had been unable to contact me with the results of a recent blood test and called the police. The policeman handed me a card with the results written on it. My creatinine level was 4.1, and my glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was 14. He said the numbers indicated that my kidneys were failing and that I should go to the emergency room immediately. Except for swelling in one ankle, I had no symptoms.
During a day and a half in the hospital, I lost 14 pounds of fluid after the insertion of a catheter. Within two weeks, my creatinine level was measured at 2.1. After a few months of wearing the catheter, my prostate was “trimmed back” (my words, not the doctor’s) using a procedure called a “TURP.” I am back to normal. What is a TURP, and how routine is it? Are there any long-term negative effects? How close did I come to kidney failure? -- T.J.R.
ANSWER: Your problem was obstruction of urine flow due to an enlarged prostate. The urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body) goes right through the middle of the prostate, and an enlarged prostate can block flow partially or completely. This is a very common problem. Sometimes the urine flow stops entirely, but this doesn’t have to happen in order for kidney damage to occur. It’s the increased pressure in the bladder that causes damage. Creatinine is an end product of protein metabolism, and since it is removed by the kidney, it’s a good indicator of kidney function. The higher the creatinine level, the worse the kidney function. The creatinine level (along with age and sex) are used to estimate the GFR, a direct statement of a person’s kidney function.
A (stable) GFR of less than 15 is considered stage 5 kidney failure, which usually means that dialysis will be necessary to preserve life. Note that creatinine itself isn’t the problem; it’s a marker for the fact that the kidney can’t remove all the other waste products, which will then build up and make a person very ill.

COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHES
Impacted wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth are a dental milestone that takes place between the ages of 17 and 21. Wisdom teeth actually are third molars, and are given the name because they come in at a mature age, according to the American Dental Association. If there isn’t enough space for them, wisdom teeth can cause crowding and pain. When molars do not fully erupt, the result is impacted wisdom teeth, which can be very painful.
When a person with urinary obstruction develops a creatinine level over 6, it’s likely that they will have permanent kidney damage, but I have seen people with higher levels recover and some with lower levels experience permanent kidney function loss. My guess is that you were only a few days away from having permanent damage. A trans-urethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a traditional treatment for an enlarged prostate. Although newer treatments are often used in situations where there is plenty of time to spare, a TURP is a routine treatment for the type of obstruction you had. There are possible long-term side effects from a TURP, such as erectile dysfunction, but those are usually noticed immediately after surgery and often get better over time.
Finally, a plea: Make sure that your doctor has your up-to-date contact information, including your emergency contacts. We physicians are very grateful to have the police available for emergencies, but would rather not have to use them. I try to remind my resident physicians to be sure that we have a working contact number any time we order a test, but it’s best if both the patient and physician have it on their lists. Even routine tests can occasionally come back with critical results.
We all try to remember to brush and floss just before a dental appointment, in addition to bringing any current dental gear like a retainer or mouthguard. There are other ways you can prepare to make the exam more comfortable. Alcoholic beverages and painkillers should be avoided before the exam. These can diminish things like discomfort or pain that may need further investigation. Avoid items like makeup, jewelry, and hair implements that may be lost, damaged, or hinder your dental team. On the other hand, comfortable clothing and layers can help put you at ease. Your dentist may allow personal items like a blanket, stuffy, or fidget toy that can help lower anxiety about your appointment. To keep your teeth and to keep them strong, be sure to keep your dental appointments for regular checkups.

Preheat oven to 350 F. For crust, combine flour, powdered sugar and baking soda in a batter bowl. Add butter; mix until crumbly. Lightly press crumb mixture over bottom of stoneware bar pan; roll lightly. Bake 15 minutes; remove from oven to a cooling rack.
Meanwhile for filling, reserve 1 cup of the pecans for garnish; chop remaining pecans. Combine chopped pecans, brown sugar, eggs, butter, vanilla, and salt; mix well. Pour filling over warm crust, spreading to edges of pan. Arrange remaining pecan halves over filling. Bake 17 to 19 minutes, or until filling is set in center. Remove from oven; cool completely.
Sprinkle with additional powdered sugar, if desired. Cut into 32 squares using a utility knife; cut each square in half diagonally.

A Chemical Engineering major at University of Buffalo, Maggie Coleman has been a real estate agent in Rochester for 11 years, making authentic connections and helping people fulfill their dreams. Maggie lives in Irondequoit with her fiancé, Anthony, and their three pups, Odin, Capellini, and JB. She and Anthony love the local food scene and love to dine out. She also loves to travel to Maine and “visit family and eat as many lobster rolls as I possibly can when I am there.” She loves running and walking around her neighborhood, or for a drive, she says she loves Chimney Bluffs.
An avid weightli er for almost 20 years, Maggie found herself paying more and more attention to her cardio workouts post-COVID. She says, “I have found that when I do more cardio-based activities, I feel better.” For the past year, she has tuned in more to tracking her step count and making sure she gets her body not only li ing but moving as a whole.
She also recognized a need in the Rochester community for groups with no cost and low stakes for women to get together socially, be
each month, with other outings sprinkled in. Walks typically range around three miles in a little over an hour, usually with at least one weeknight walk and a Saturday morning walk or two. Forthcoming will be longer weekend walks for those interested. Women come together to network, get fresh air, and get their steps in as they explore beautiful parks, trails, and communities around Rochester.
“Rochester is so big, so we strive to have different walking locations every time,” Maggie explains, adding that choosing locations across the community also helps “ensure we can reach the people of our community wherever they are.”

Maggie says her top two favorite locations RocGirlWalks has visited so far are Turning Point Park and Durand Eastman Beach. She says, “Both have amazing trails that bring you by water and woods, and both of them were so beautiful!” Maggie looks forward to RocGirlWalks’ first autumn for walks. “Not only is it the best time of year, but the beauty of the leaves changing color and the smell of the crisp air – It is unbeatable!”
A big reason some women join walking clubs is for safety in groups, Maggie admits, and safety is paramount to RocGirlWalks. eir walk location changes with each meetup, with only a general area noted publicly, and members must be on Maggie’s email list to learn the exact meetup location. She helps reduce walker anxiety and increase safety by sending out detailed information on precise location and route (though once you arrive, it’s hard to miss the mass of women ready to welcome you, as I discovered when I met them), as well as parking and restroom facilities available at the particular meetup location.

John Paul Kozlowsky passed away a year ago, July 26, 2023. John was born Dec 15, 1942, (age 80) and raised on a farm on Stottle Road in the township of Chili/Scottsville in Monroe County, New York. His parents were Mary and John Kozlowsky. He is survived by his older brother, Walter Kozlowsky (of Florida), his younger brother, Frank Kozlowsky (Brenda, of Florida) and his sister, Patricia Bethards, (Paul, of Indiana), as well as nieces and nephews and cousins in the Rochester, NY, Pittsburgh, PA, Naples, Florida, Dallas,Texas, and Zionville, Indiana area.
John attended school in Scottsville, New York and graduated from the Wheatland-Chili school system at omas J. Connor High School in June of 1960. He excelled in math and science courses.
Soon after high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. and attended boot training at MCRD Paris Island, S.C., followed by basic and advanced specialty electronics at MCRD San Diego, CA. John spent the remainder of his time in the Marines at Camp Pendleton in Southern California. He was activated in a support unit with a Marine Infantry Battalion as a radio operator during the Cuban Missile Crisis but was recalled prior to entering the Suez Canal. He left the Marine Corps in Jan 1964 as a Lance Corporal with honorable service.
John remained in California and sought employment in the electronics industry. He worked with Computer Measurements Corporation of Pasadena, Teledyne, Lockheed, and others. He also became extremely involved with Toastmaster International and created a Toastmasters club in the Glendale, California area. His final years after retirement were spent in Burbank, CA. Upon his death and cremation, his ashes were spread at sea in Southern California.
